If you merged L.A.'s gangsta-rap tradition with its hip-hop underground, Xzibit would be the bastard progeny. While his Likwit Crew peers, The Alkaholiks, flow with finesse, Xzibit chooses fierceness, exuding a sinister grimness with his gruff delivery. For his sophomore project, Xzibit convinces Ice Cube's old producer, Sir Jinx, to come out the woodwork, resulting in familiar but funky tracks like "Shroomz" and "Chamber Music." Other winners are courtesy of beat makers like A Kid Called Roots, who flexes a subtly sublime track on "Nobody Sound Like Me," and the Alkies' E-Swift, responsible for the thumping booms on "Let It Rain." If you're looking for an ill alternative to L.A.'s reality-rap monopoly, put your money on the "big, bad, insane, black John McClaine," Xzibit. --Oliver Wang

Vibe
Xzibit continues to confirm that there's more to Cali rap than just typical West Side funk grooves.

5 out of 5 stars Better than At The Speed Of Life??? (4.5 stars).......2006-02-05

Thats a good toss up question when comparing these two CD's. He released this CD in mid 1998, when commercial rap was on the take over (basically all the artests from Def Jam Records ran the scene around that time), so I don't think that anyone heard this when it first came out. Production wise X does a little exploring comming across Dr. Dre and Sir Jinx while staying with the some of the beats by E-Swift. Some may say that this is his break through album, but comparing this to At The Speed Of Life, Xzibit gets a little live on this than previously.

To name a few tracks that I like:

Chamber Music sets the tone of this CD.

3 Card Molly is another great track with the help of Saafir and Ras Kass (Golden State)

What U See Is What U Get was the single of this CD and the video was nice also.

Deeper has a nice beat and really brings out X's style. One of my favorites

Let It Rain which featues King T and The Liks also a nice beat.

If you enjoyed Xzibit's style from At The Speed Of Life, he made this CD and the rest is history to you fans of all of dope lyrics comming from him with out the commercial mainstream. If you got into Xzibit from 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz and on, and never heard his first one or don't like the hip hop style, you may consider this CD as his break through and got him involved with big artists such as Snoop Dogg, Emimem and Dr. Dre. To me personally, these CD's are neck and neck. It all depends on what you like. I just don't hope that he never forgets where he came from and the people that put on.

Man xzibit has really done it here. By far his best album yet, def a classic, dre and eminem level material here. Its funny how only 32 people reviewed this album, I guess people just don't know good rap these days.

5 out of 5 stars Xzibit - 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz.......2006-01-04

First up, this is CLASSIC Xzibit material. This is when he used to spit the lyrics on the real hiphop beats. Sucks that Xzibit dont still use this style, but its still cracken. The production on this album is for sure cracken! Great beats, I love the beats on this album. It starts off good, then gets better throughout the whole album. I was kinda dissapointed with Xzibits new album, but this is his REAL style, and his REAL lyrics. Get this album now! Its worth it.

4 out of 5 stars X to tha Z's encore to "at the speed of life".......2005-09-12

As one reviewer put it, this a toss up with the "Restless" album as his best with #2 At the speed...#3 Man vs. Machine #4 Weapons of Mass Destruction(In my opinion his, not worst 'cause X is a stellar MC,but least favorite..too commercial for my taste), anyways bout the album: D to tha O to tha P to tha E, DOPE, pick this one up fa' sho, pussy pop, 3 card molly, what you see..., and chamber music being reasons why...Also look out for any Strong Arm Steady material comin out with Phil Tha Agony, Krondon, and SD619'S OWN Mitchy Slick

5 out of 5 stars This album was almost as hot as Mark McGwire in summer 1998.......2005-02-06

In the middle of the West Coast saturday reviews but I will do all 5 Xzibit albums."Chamber Music" is absolutely sick and is very nice."3 Card Molly" is some how actually better and has a perfect beat to it and when you get Saafir and Ras Kass you have a classic song."What you see is what you get" was one of the best video's if not the best of 1998 and is also a great single."Handle your bussiness" also has a great beat to it and he kills this one to."Nobody Sounds like me" has a experimental beat(I love experimental beats) I wish the had beats like this on his new albums."P**** Pop" is that Method Man."Shroomz" messes up the album with a bad beat and bad lyrics."Focus" gets back on focus with a nice beat and nice lyrics."Deeper" has a beat that sounds like it was made underground and is experimental."Los Angeles Times" is obviosly a look at LA up close."Let it Rain" has a sick beat and hot rhymes to go with it."Recycled Assasins" has a great beat to it.I really do not know anything about Thayoud Auser or Jesse West but they did a great job.If Xzibit would of actaully had fun on here it would have been even better. He used energy but not excitement.

Good cd, the new one is better and has better beats though. City of houston is a sweet ass song, its all about houston but the melody of Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Under the bridge, but more gangsta rap style. For all you lone star ridaz lovas, check out swishahouse, the are off the hook... holla

5 out of 5 stars X's CLASSIC.......2002-04-26

Xzibit wasn't always a West Coast hip-hop household name. Before his popular collaborations with Dr. Dre and the platinum selling Restless LP, Xzibit was a hungry underground LA emcee without a lot of mainstream attention, only vicious lyrics and relentless flow. After making noise with the single "Paparazzi" from his critically acclaimed debut "At The Speed of Life", Xzibit dropped what is still considered his best album, "40 Dayz and 40 Nights". Fueled with a mixture of East Coast wordplay and West Coast themes the album was almost automatically dubbed a Classic. Not that the backing of Los Angeles's Likwit Crew with the dark and demanding production from Sir Jinx didn't add to the fire power of the albums tracks. The thundering soundscape of "Chamber Music" demands the listeners attention from the beginning and the Rass Kass and Saafir backed "3 Card Molly" only certify the lyrical capabilities of the West's finest. As Rass puts it "If you're looking for sympathy then you better look between R and T in the ... dictionary", because no sympathy will come from this record, only 17 tracks of raw west coast hip-hop. The albums acclaimed single "What U See is What U Get" became an anthem on its own and "Los Angeles Times" paints a vivid picture of the LA streets. Those of you who didn't hear about the black John McClain before shouting out a Restless "X" at a club need to hit rewind and listen to the Xzibit at his finest moment.

4 out of 5 stars What a load of Crap,or is it.......2001-10-19

Just a load of shouting and bass, Ya lieeeee! Cd's heavy bredgin' but its proper old.

4 out of 5 stars xzibit got skillz.......2000-06-17

this is the shit as was his first album. the album is so sick because xzibit has the kind of lyrics and beatz that just make ya bounce ya head to it.if you want some mad undergrond west coast shit go get this.cant wait for his new album the restless.

4 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated M. C.s out there today........1999-04-26

The X-man really impressed me with his debut single "Papparatzi" and the mellow, but deep follow up "Foundation." This album is really well put together in terms of melody and production. The Golden State Warrior immediately gets your head jerking with the first track "Chamber Music". Xzibit then teams up with fellow Californians Ras Kass and Saafir on the banging "3 Card Molly." Your attention is kept then on "What you see is what you get"," Handle your Business", and the Quincy Jones sample laced "Nobody Sound Like Me."Hip hop heads should know where he got the exercpts for the hook from." From there the album drifts off with "Pussy Pop (featuring Meth and Jay-O felony)" and "Shroomz." After that you will adjust your volume with the slick, up-tempo sounds of "Focus", the thought-provoking "Deeper",and the bass kicking sound of "Los Angeles Times." In addition, X gets some dope assistance from the Alkoholiks and King T on "Let it Rain." Lastly, the LP is finished off nicely with "Inside Job", and "Recycled Assassins".

5 out of 5 stars The new Los Angeles King.......1999-04-21

XZ has the raw funk vibe that makes an MC great. His flow is rough as sandpaper and well crafted and put together. Likwit Crew(Alkaholiks,Defari,Xzibit,KIng T) are establishing lyrical dominace over their neighbors in L.A. This album combines the hardcore drums, and semi-spooky keyboards that define gangsta rap and puts a twist to it. The result shines best on Killa Cali classics like "what U see is what U get", "3 card Molly" and "P# Pop".
