5 out of 5 stars full circle.......2006-05-28

D+B are the soundtrack of my high school and college years. My albums are literally worn out and I am replacing them with cds--FINALLY! I got this one first as an LP when I was 15. It hasn't aged a bit. I, on the other hand.........well!

A classic!

5 out of 5 stars The start of it all.......2004-04-01

Alot of people don't realize what this album started. This album basically gave the Southern sound a major boost in the arm and brought it to the attention of the rest of the U.S. This album is a great mix of R n B, gospel, R n R and the blues naturally. Bonnie's voice was a breath of fresh air, a voice not accustom to being heard on a R n R station, but that was the beauty of FM back in the late sixties, they were alot more open to hearing and playing what was good, not just the hits.

This album was a boost for Leon Russell too, you can hear his distinctive piano and know he had a lot of influence on the production of this album. I remembering seeing D @ B live on their debut tour,I can't remember who they opened for, but I remember seeing this guy with a beard and wearing a top hat playing the piano, he blew me away - Leon Russel was his name. He followed this by playing on Dave Mason's first solo album after leaving Traffic and his sound is very pronounced on that album.

Eric Clapton after hearing D @ B, he was so influenced by them that he truely wanted to join this band and did for a tour later on and they recorded that and it's available - Delaney and Bonnie On Tour with Eric Clapton.

Without the rythym section of D @ B - Carl Radle and Jim Gordan -you wouldn't of had Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen (put together by Leon Russel including Bobby Keyes and Whitlock on horns) or Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes (along with Duane Allman). As you know Bobby Keyes went on to play with the Rolling Stones and has been there for about 30 years now. On Eric Clapton's first solo effort, if you read the band members, you'll notice that it's Delaney and Bonnie and friends.

This band surely has a rich influence and history in the R n R circus and definitely deserves a listen to if you've never heard
them. R n R owes them a debt in my opinion.

Not taking anything away from their other albums, I just love this one the best - it had quite an influence on me. This is one of my all time favorite albums!!!! ENJOY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Foundation Recording.......2004-01-20

Amazing recording with Delaney (g), Jim Keltner (d), Jim Price, Bobby Keys (horns), Bobby Whitlock (kb), Leon Russell (p), Carl Radle (b), Jerry McGee (g). Very funky early Southern rock in
L.A. - soon after this Eric Clapton joined band as sideman!
Album features a Mac Rebennack (Doctor John) tune (When This Battle Is Over) and lots more. Like Allman Brothers? Get this!

4 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL!.......2003-01-29

Amazing CD! It's a must for every Delaney And Bonnie collector.
It's a shame that "HOME" is no longer available on CD. There is a RARE recording called GENESIS. I understand that the songs are actually demos. I have the LP. To my knowledge, it is not available on commercial CD. So much time has passed by that I think every recording should be released on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Before Derek and the Dominos.......2003-01-26

If it hadn't been for Delaney and Bonnie, there might have been no Derek and the Dominos. When you listen to this album, you can hear easily hear the influence. This blues/jazz/gospel sound might have not made Delaney and Bonnie that well-known to the public (except for True Music Fans) but I guarantee you that Eric Clapton knows who they are. After all, he played with them. I have to admit I'm really surprised there are no reviews here. You really should buy this album.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM.......2005-11-18

VARIOUS ARTISTS
THE SUBSTITUTE SOUNDTRACK

I seen this album for 5 dollars at a cd store in town and happened to notice out of the corner of my eye that it had LIL ½ DEAD on it. And upon further inspection I noticed it also had tracks from MACK 10, RAS KASS, THA ROAD DAWGS, & ALLFRUMTHAI. So u know I had to get it, I mean come on wouldn't u with that line up. The only draw back from just looking at it is that it only had 11 tracks.

1.HOO BANGIN'-the first track comes out bumpin with a thumpin beat from ICE CUBE, who is also on the track as a cameo. But the star on this one is the great MACK 10, who of course kills it. His rough flow along with the bass driven beat makes this the perfect choice for a single if the cd had one. This really sounds like it should have been on his classic "FO LIFE" album. Every one out there should get this track some how, it is a great song.5/5

2.LICORICE STIKS-this track follows the example the first one laid down, a hot beat with nice lyrics from the artist. This time it's INTENSE METHOD that holds it down this time, tearing the track. And the beat is by RYTHEM D who crafted an excellent instrumental made for night time cruising. Over all this is a pretty nice track, it gets play in my ride.4/5

3.DANGER-Mack 10 returns to help out in the track, but it's the ROAD DAWGS and ALLFRUMTHAI that control this song. Each member of the groups come hard with their verses, especially with the hook. BINKY comes with the beat on this one, to be honest with you I really don't bump this track as much. But to its credit it definitely has that hardcore west coast feel to it, which makes a pretty good track. For some reason it reminds me of "MURDER WAS THE CASE".4/5

4.MIAMI LIFE-finally I get to the RAS KASS track, which I already had once owned before my "SOUL ON ICE" album got stolen. So it was good to hear this track again, I always had a soft spot for this track. the unique beat from FLIP and Kass always seemed tight to me, in fact the production on that album was not as bad as most people say. And you all know that lyrically this track is nice, Ras always comes correct with that. So over all this is an excellent track.4.8/5

5.BRING IT ON-now this catchy yet eerie sounding track comes hard with ORGANIZED KONFUSION in front of and behind the boards. To be honest this is a fav of mine off of the album, the beat is well paced and the lyrics are off the hook. Also the flows from the artists on this track are mad original, or at least for that time period. Over all this is a nice track, worth checking out.4.3/5

6.BANG'EM UP-oh my goodness is that a NO LIMET track from when they were just starting to blow up, I think it is. This is back when almost every thing they dropped was original and a sure fire hit. And that is also very true for this track from TRU [consists of MASTER P, SILK THA SHOCKER, and C MURDER]. The track also features former tank member MR SERV-ON. And to be honest they all come correct, including P. This is when they were real hungry, and egger to get heard. The beat from KLC is very west coast oriented, and the perfect backdrop for these N.O. Soilders.4/5

7.HEAD UP-another west coast track for all of you out there to chill to. This track comes from the YOUNG MURDER SQUAD, and SH' KILLA. Each one of them comes out tight on this one, this one takes me back. The beat from PRODEJE and TAMIE MUNDY is off the hook, it reminds me of the wests hey day in the early 90's {of course this did come out in 96}.4.5/5

8.I GOT THAT CREAM-Master P returns with another west coast influenced track, courtesy of MO B. DICK with his nice production. Of course this was when P was known as the ice cream man, and this was when they first started getting big. This track like the first N.O. track is tight and worth you checking it out. This track is smoother than the last track, and sounds tight in the ride.4/5

9.HOOD LIFE-ah yes the song I bought the album for, LIL ½ DEAD is in the house ya'll. Of course this track didn't disappoint at all, and like I figured is my favorite track on the cd. If the Mack 10 song wasn't the single, this should have been. H.D. drops heat on this track, and makes wish he would drop another album. Also the beat from TRACY S. KENDRICK, COURTNEY BRANCH, & K PHIX is off the chain, although to some it might sound familiar to another west coast hit, see for your self. This is definitely the best song on the album.5/5

10.MONEY, POWER, & WOMEN-this is definitely a highlight of the album, the beat from "gasp" FREDWRECK is off the hook. I couldn't believe Fredwreck was on here, he definitely crafted a classic instrumental on this one. The beat is very smooth and perfect for a lil night time ride. And G SPOT GEEZ come more than correct on here with the lyrics, each verse fits the beat to a t, and the hook is great. I'll have to give this a...5/5

11.ALL OF PUERTO RICO-ok I guess the album had to have the up beat bouncy happy track, it seems every cd has at least one. To its credit JAY and the artist were successful in creating a nice beat, even the hook is tolerable. But the verses from AFRO RICAN are not the greatest verses to be recorded by a long shot, but they do move nicely along with the beat.3.8/5

Over all this a pretty strong album each track is good 2 great depending on your taste, so I recommend this cd to all readers out there.

5 out of 5 stars Doesnt Get Any G'd Up Than This.......2005-05-16

yo, if your a true old school hip hop head that loves the gangster rap, this album is for you, in addition to it, you should check out the movie too, very good movie to watch. this soundtrack features artists such as Ras Kass, ice cube, mack-10, master p and more. if you love bumpin your system and need some serious bass this is the CD for you, i especially recommend track #2 for you system lovers. and in response to the post below this one, the song played right before the library scene is called "La Raza" by Kid Frost, i think it shoulda been on the CD

2 out of 5 stars What's that song?.......2005-02-17

There is a song in this movie that plays right before the library scene (where the gang guys get thrown from the library window)... does anyone know the name of this song and or the group its by?

4 out of 5 stars Review of the Sound Track.......2000-07-25

For Hip Hop, R&B lovers, this CD is a nice addition to your collection. I had the CD back in 1996, but it was lost. I am buying it again because I have been unable to find anywhere.

Out-of-print in the US! Tribute album to the '60s legends, now sadly dwindled down to the duo of Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. Even before the '60s came to a close, the Who were a certified success around the world, but the band took it even further in the '70s and beyond. This compilation features Cast ('The Seeker'(, Ocean Colour Scene '(Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere)', Paul Weller ('Circles'), David Bowie ('Pictures Of Lily'), Pearl Jam '(The Kids Are All Right'), Fastball ('The Real Me'), UnAmerican ('Naked Eye'), Stereophonics ('Who Are You'), Phish ('5:15'), Sheryl Crow ('Behind Blue Eyes') and The Who themselves covering 'Substitute' live with Stereophonics' vocalist Kelly Jones and many more. 4 out of 5 stars Passion for the who.......2006-05-02

Interesting record. These very different artists having in common their passion for the who.
In my oppinion, the versions I like most are Bowie?s, Weller?s and Sterophonics, but all of them have something good.
If you like the who, can be nice listening to other groups singing their songs, although I hate comparisons.

          3 out of 5 stars A tribute?.......2005-10-28

This CD isn't bad, but it could've been a lot better. Some of the songs were recorded live, while others are studio. It is obvious that the selections were not recorded specially for a tribute CD. But that's not the biggest problem with this collection. The biggest problem is that while this CD is supposed to be a tribute to the Who, one of the songs features the Who! It's like they're paying tribute to themselves?! This CD does contain some good Who interpretations, but it's not enough to save this compilation.

          2 out of 5 stars Ho-hum.......2002-07-28

I have yet to hear a "tribute" album that is worth the time it takes to listen, but I still get drawn into buying them.

Here's the problem with "tribute" records: if the artists go the note-for-note reproduction route, what's the point? Who cares if Phish can reproduce "5:15"? (They don't quite, by the way. They play the same notes, but all of the passion of the original is sucked out of the performance, and the vocals sound like they were done after running a marathon) If you want to hear the original, you listen to the original...right?

If the artists go for reinterpretation, who cares? How many people listen to the Who's version of "Pictures Of Lily" and wishes it had been slower and sung in a smug monotone, ala David Bowie's version here? Classic songs done differently--with some very rare exceptions, like Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" and Joe Cocker's "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window"--don't work.

Perhaps most dissapointing of all is the generally lazy vocals on this CD. Eddie Veder always sounds like he's asleep on his feet, but Sheryl Crow, David Bowie, and the singers for Phish and Fastball all sound like they phoned it in too.

Paul Weller comes off best here, but that may just be because he has spent his entire career imitating the Who.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2001-11-28

This disc is kind of a slapped-together cd - a low-rent version of your typical tribute album. Pearl Jam, Phish, and Kelly Jones' tracks are all recorded live, and not for the purpose of this cd - they just happened to be recorded well enough to be included. This cd lacks a cohesive listen, and most of the tracks are pretty uninspired or are note-for-note imitations of the original - just with a different singer...
I bought this to hear other artists take Who material and make it their own, and what this mostly sounds like is a 'karaoke with the stars' cd.
David Bowie's track is the most inspired, but..c'mon, he did this same sorta thing with the same-era Who music on his Pinups album in the early 70s.

3 out of 5 stars Pictures of Ziggy.......2001-08-03

Great songs, and overall good performances, but most of these versions are close to note-for-note versions of the originals. The Bowie version of "Pictures of Lily" is the one real departure, and it works on several levels. The tempo, production, and instrumentation are reminiscent of Ziggy-era Bowie (especially "All the Young Dudes" or "Ziggy Stardust"). In this context, the lyrics take on extra meaning--you can imagine the young boy "relieved" by the pictures of Lily Langtry on the wall inspired to grow up to be a cross-dressing glam rocker. A great version, and one truer to the spirit of a good cover--respecting the original, but making it your own.

5 out of 5 stars Little Feat revisited.......2006-01-08

This was an incredible find in a wall full of old vinal albums. The cover is one of a saltine, a full cover of a picture of a saltine. ha ha ha I put the album on and upon hearing the very first sound of music, I knew that I HAD TO LISTEN to this entire thing. INCREDIBLE stuff from some of the members of Little Feat in this band. check it out! that is if you can ever find it. . .i myself still don't have a copy of it.
