Devolution.......2002-07-24

It's rewarding to find a band on the brink of emergence as a force. That's force not farce. Devolver encompasses several genres and is not limited to bluegrass. The Waybacks are accomplished in interpreting jazz (Bird's "Scrapple From the Apple"), Celtic (Fischer's "Witch"), among other styles. This band, to put it simply, is fun to be around. Don't miss the bonus track (#13) at the end of this CD.

The first time I heard this CD, I didn't think it was anything really special. The second time I thought it was pretty cool. And by the third time it was my second favorite CD of all time (second only to Cake's Fashion Nugget). Incredible music, especially their instrumentals. A variety of types within the bluegrass/folk genere. Don't forget to listen to the last track (the untitled one) -- you're laugh your arse off.

OK, so I haven't heard this CD yet - so what, I'm buying it now. I caught these guys opening for the hilarious Roy Zimmerman at McCabe's in Santa Monica CA and they blew my socks off. Mouth agape, eyes fixated on the amazing stringwork of Mr.s Nash and Jaques with great backup, bass & drum. These guys are tight as hell, know exactly what their doing on stage, and put on a great show. Wonderful mandolin work and tight synchrony by some fantastic bluegrass jazz hippies.

GREAT CD! These guys really have talent...how they play the ole fiddle and guitars the way they do is beyond me. I heard of them when I went to California...they are absolutely great! Listening to it always puts me in a great mood.

I am very impressed with this album and have not stopped listening to it since I got it. Beautiful musicianship and a lovely choice of material, well executed, make this an album to enhance any acoustic music lovers collection. But the main reason I love it is that the band sound like they're having FUN ! , an ingredient often missing these days! Living in the UK means that I have never seen the Waybacks live, so hopefully they will be making a trip across the 'pond' soon. I can't wait!

Smokin' Indeed............2004-09-23

This newest release by Hendrickson-Smith is evidence of a continuing ascent for the young saxophonist. I shut my eyes while listening and felt like I was in the club at the performance. Hendrickson-Smith oozes of even more expressiveness and character in his playing than he did on his previous release. I'm so impressed with his melodic sensibilities, sublime execution and phrasing. At times, he reminds me of what Hank Mobley might sound like on alto sax, although I'm hesitant to squelch what is his unique approach to the instrument and the music. He hits a home run with this set, and surrounds himself with an incredible supporting cast. It's definitely going to be in my listening rotation for a great deal of time. If you like the essence of hard bop with a bluesy yet contemporary approach, then you're sure to enjoy this CD.

lilrob may be dead but even though he couldn't record it himself they're still his jamz. I think he didn't want to be forgotten so i'm sure he would be glad someone kept his music going. i support his music even if he's dead.

Familia Records? CHALE, whatever!.......2002-03-01

This Cd got 3 stars from me, not because it's not just as firme and bad ass as all of Lil Rob's, but because it's not Lil Rob's!! yeah it's him rapping on the dope tracks, but Familia Records made it without his permission! I own every single Lil Rob cd, except this one, i've heard it and the songs are firme, but out of respect for my favorite rapper i won't buy it. i suggest all of Lil Rob's other cd's, made with his permission, especially his original, the king of chicano rap cd's, CRAZY LIFE. Also, you have got to own his newest, YOU CANT KEEP A GOOD MAN DOWN. Lil Rob, keep doing your thing and remember all those haters and imitations can't see you. Orale, Lil Rob, your number one por vida in the brown music scene, Simone! This cd deserves not even 5 but 6 stars, but it only gets 3 cause a jealous chavale label's behind it.

Still smokin' it over........2006-03-17

This follow-up release to their 1990 offering "Southern Spirit" has the same members of MTB working out on a new batch of tunes.

Frontline - Up-tempo opener with some fine guitar work.

Two Hearts Fallen - Flute and guitar driven mid-tempo tune that has that "Heard It In A Love Song" feel to it.

Tan Yard Road - MTB's entry into the southern ghost story sweepstakes ala CDB's "The Legend of Wooley Swamp".

Full Moon Rising - MTB lounge music complete with synth strings. Not bad at all as Doug Gray's vocals are delivered with perfect emotion. Think "Desert Skies" with a tux.

Carolina Party - Hank Jr.-style name dropping tune much like "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight". If you are prone to dance, this one will probably get you moving.

I Love You - More synth strings. This one has its' moments but it doesn't quite connect with me.

Can't Take It Anymore - Where did this fascination with "electronica" come from? The intro to this one may have you asking that question but stick with it as the band gets to grooving quite nicely.

Driving You Out Of My Mind - Back to familiar territory. Nice steel guitar work by John Call.

Southern Spirit - Title song one album too late. Grinderswitch meets Elvin Bishop and early CDB.

Let Me Come Home - Another jazzy, bluesy number that would fit in well in a lounge environment. And, again, it works out OK thanks to Mr. Gray's fine vocal delivery. Check out the bass playing in this one.

Summary: Almost a four star effort falling just shy of the mark on a couple of tunes but generally on target. Not recommended as the starting point for those looking to get to know MTB. There is plenty of that Tucker magic sprinkled throughout this release but it may not connect with everyone in the Tucker fanbase. It all depends on how much "freedom" you are willing to give the guys to play it the way they're feeling at the time. I'm certainly happy to own a copy of this hard to find disc.

Deuce Komradz is great group from Montgomery. One of their earlier songs, "Down Wit Da South," they sold to Trick Daddy who recorded the song with Trina and the Ying Yang Twins and it is featured on Trick Daddy's 2004 album, "Thug Matrimony:Married to the Streets." Their music is true southern rap and this album is one any southern rap fan should own.
