Enjoyment of old Russian liturgical nusic.......2007-01-09
The Basso Profundo recording reminds one of the recordings of Tibetan Monks in chant and is very stirring.
Finally, a recording I can sing along with!.......2006-11-04
As a low bass and wannabe octavist, I really enjoy singing along with this recording. Luckily, I have performed the Rachmaninov "All Night Vigil", Tchaikovshy "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom", and other works in Old Church Slavonic, so the words are mostly familiar.
I still find it amazing that these singers can make notes in the midrange still sound low! Enjoy!
Good Music from Russia.......2005-07-21
This CD is very good for those who like orthodox music. Buy it!
Great CD.......2003-03-02
I have done a good bit of research on basso profundo's, contrabasses, etc and these guys seem to be lower than any I've heard. The soloist on "Do Not Reject Me In My Old Age" has a full voiced G1, below low bass C which he hits a number of times on the CD. Very amazing recording... good musically, not the VERY best choir I've ever heard or anything, but definetly good. Russian music is great, many of the tracks are very dark musically, but there are some more majestic tracks, and a few tracks that sound kinda militaristic.
Well Below the Bass Range.......2002-01-15
The music on this CD won't be to everyone's liking, but the unique sound of the voice of a "basso profundo" or "octavist"
is a musical rarity that shouldn't be missed. These basses have a gripping effect, with a timbre resembling that of an organ's pedal tones. These basses can sing the low A below the bass range. They are, simply, extraordinarily powerful voices. Savor the unearthly sound of them. Who knows - you might just get to like Russian polyphonic liturgical chant, as well.

Killer connection.......2007-05-21
This album gets five stars for the following reasons. 1. It doesnt betray its purpose with silly records like Get Ignit and Lights Out. 2. The production was hard. None of that street party music the second album had. 3. Ice Cube was always on point, and WC and Mack10 shine right along with him. This album reminds of NWA's N***az4Life. Uncompromising gangsta rap at its finest. Standout Track: BOW DOWN, GANGSTAS MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND, ALL THE CRITICS IN NEW YORK(NYC needs to be dissed for giving a talentless stoolbucket like Puffy a pass), THE GANGSTA THE KILLER& THE DOPE DEALER, DO YOU LIKE CRIMINALS, CROSS EM OUT AND PUT A K (Cube and Mac10 take shots at Cypress Hill and Q-tip), KING OF THE HILL(continued assault on Cypress Hill on this dope diss record), 3 TIME FELONS etc. Filler: None. Bottom Line: Westside Connection's Bow Down is one the best rap albums from a group in 96. Hard edged rhyming over gritty beats. Just a great album period. BOW DOWN!
Gangstas Make The World Go Round .......2007-02-20
That song Gangstas Make The World Go Round, alone is reason to buy this CD.
One of the last great West Coast HipHop Albums................................2007-02-13
Cube was already a hiphop legend and screen star when he assembled WC and Mack 10 to form Westside Connection. This album dropped at the height of the West Coast-vs-East Coastal rap war. These dudes come hard and get their point across that these 3 West Coast Gs aint nothing to mess with!
Dub C is off the hook on here, dude is the knockout punch for real.

Great album from west coast's supergroup.......2006-11-12
Westside Connection united three of the west coast's strongest rappers in 1996 for their first album, "Bow Down". "Bow Down" is great because it is one of the hardest, most unapologetically gangsta rap albums released from the west coast since the days of NWA and Compton's Most Wanted. While Ice Cube doesn't rap in the stunning consciousness or social relevance as he did on his solo albums, he is well surrounded by fellow vets Mack 10 and WC, who display a great chemistry and play off each other's verses. Consistent is the word to describe this album. Every track is just as hard-hittin' as the last one, with threatening lyrics and chanted hooks that'll have you yelling along with them. The production fights against the reign of g-funk that had taken over the west coast in the nineties, using simple, hard drums and synths to create a vibe reminiscent of an earlier west coast sound. While this was not the most original album to emerge from the west coast, it's a great album to ride around to or play at any time, it's an angry and entertaining ride with three of the west coast's greatest, and the whole feel of the album is great. I recommend it to any fan of west coast hip hop or 90s rap, it's a really underrated album.
"Bow Down" is a great start, the trio drops threatening, murderous lyrics with a great hook over an awesome, super-tough beat. "Gangstas Make the World Go Round" represents their style and coast, it has good production and a funny chorus. They throw in their two cents on the east-west coast beef in "All the Critics in New York", which is followed by the entertaining "Do You Like Criminals". "The Gangsta, the Killer, and the Dope Dealer" has the best beat on the album, another ultra-rough song where they straight-up represent. "Cross 'Em Out and Put a K" will have you chanting along with the hook, guaranteed, an awesome song. On "King of the Hill" and "3 Time Felons", WSCG ignites the beef with Cypress Hill that would ensue for the next few years. Both are good songs too. "Westward Ho" is a humorous and funky song about dealings with women, I really like it. "Hoo-Bangin'" is an awesome song, I love the hook and beat, one might call it a classic.
Granted, "Bow Down" is not the most artistic or original album ever created, and listeners looking for another "Death Certificate" or album of that nature should look elsewhere. But this album has some of the most entertaining, roughest, and menacing music hip hop has ever had to offer. The supergroup of Mack 10, Ice Cube, and WC has rarely been passed in terms of talent, and this album shows why. Highly recommended to any hip hop fan.
Great album that made it's point to the East Coast.......2006-07-11
I only picked up Bow Down a few months ago and at the time I wasn't expecting that much from it, but I ended up being surprised at how good Westside Connection's debut effort was. I already owned most of Ice Cube's other work and I believed (like most others) that he hadn't really done anything significant since Lethal Injection. However in 1996 at the height of the tension between the East & West, Ice Cube, Mack 10 and WC dropped this gem of an album. On this site and on some other sources I have seen some fairly negative reviews of this album and they are unfair in my opinion. I suspect most of the bad press towards this album was from East Coast critics, the very people this album was targeting, and i'm not surprised they didn't like it, about half the tracks on the album are disses or have references to the East Coast. Whether the East Coast will admit it or not though, there was a lack of respect given to the West, and this album legitimately adressed that.
The album itself has several great tracks, Bow Down, All The Critics In New York, Do You Like Criminals?, The Gangsta The Killa and The Dope Dealer and the Cypress Hill diss, King of The Hill (which WC refused to take part in) among the best. The beats are seriously heavy and sound like a post G-funk era of music, there is not a bad beat on the album, and though it only has 10 tracks there is really nothing you could call filler on here. As for the emcees themselves, Ice Cube is definetely a cut above, and despite what some say, he was still clearly relevant in 1996. I hadn't heard much of Dub C before listening to this album, but his flow is great though he can't match Cube's lyrical intensity, and though I haven't always been a great fan of Mack 10, he does a good job on this album. Overall a great album, may have angered New York but the West Coast had good cause to be upset with their treatment from the East, and this album made that point, when some others were trying to diffuse the situation. 4.5 stars, only misses out on a 5 because a few of the songs are only O.K (though not bad), I also would have liked to see Westside Slaughterhouse on here, as I don't own Mack 10's debut album and it was their first song together, otherwise highly recommended.

My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06
Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.
The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.
--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.
On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.
The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
music of great beauty.......2005-04-24
Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?
Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28
This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.
Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20
This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

Having Church!!!.......2006-08-05
This is truly a worship experience! I have had this cd for years but each time I hear it I feel like I'm in a live service. I recently wanted to play the cd and could not find it. I'm not sure if it is just misplaced or if someone has it. What ever the case may be I had to replace it immediately. Today you often hear gospel music that I consider to be just that, music. This cd however excels above being just something to listen to while doing other things. If you haven't purchased it I encourage you to do so and enjoy the service!
I'm So Glad I Finally Purchased this CD.......2006-06-22
I recently brought this CD because I haven't heard Bow Down and Worship Him on the radio in a long time (mainly because I don't listen to Christian music on the radio that much). This CD has ushered in the presence of God when I listened to it. My favorite songs are Yet Praise Him, Stay Close and the worship songs Bow Down, You Are My King, He Is Here, Bow Down (Reprise). The last four worship songs on the CD allow you to worship the Lord for as long as you need to because the transition is so smooth.
Bow Down.......2005-08-25
Few songs in my life capture the essence of my worship experience as deeply as Bow Down and Worship Him. I am moved in the spirit each time that I hear it, it hasn't failed me yet. The song is as spiritual, relevant, and inspirational in my praise today as it was when I initially heard it new. I just can't get enough of it!!!
Awesome.......2004-05-08
This is a must have CD. It takes you into the place where God is. I normally like fast paced songs but "Bow Down" really touched my soul. I had no other choice but to bow down when I heard it. If you don't like anything else on this CD, for this song alone, it is worth having. But I guarantee you will love it, in its entirety!

If you want to know what real gospel sounds like, buy this CD. It is reverent, worshipful and I like it. "He Is Here" is what a worshipful song should sound like. May they continue to sing songs unto the Lord and not worry if the "beat" will sell CDs.

David Holmes has always been pretty eclectic in his musical outlook. Starting life as a Northern Irish punk, his lengthy musical journey has seen the release of nosebleed techno, off-kilter breaks, and dubbed-out hip-hop. Famously, he's also written the soundtrack to a major Hollywood blockbuster. With his third studio album, another soundtrack, he's decided to change tack again, charging off in a darker, dirtier direction. Holmes does his best to distort and disturb, fusing fuzzy funk, low-slung blues, and organ-drenched psychedelia. There are a couple of twisted punk rock numbers featuring Jon Spencer and Bobby Gillespie as well as a piece written with Bond composer David Arnold. As if that weren't enough to set the pulse racing, Tricky's former vocal foil, Martina, sings a couple of tracks, and beat poet Carl Hancock Rux adds harrowing narration to Holmes's intense hallucinogenic vision. Bow down to the Exit Sign may be dark and disturbed, but it's also a very compelling listen. --Amazon.co.uk

Holmes & Rux.......2000-09-09
I have to be honest, I thought ;"Let's Get Killed" was a little weird, a little too all over the place for my tastes-- but there was still some kind of undeniable genius I sensed about Holmes and so I was intrigued to hear this new CD. Bow Down To The Exit Sign is awesome!Starting with Carl hancock Rux on "Compared To What" and "The Living Room". I have Rux's album, "Rux Revue" and even though it's on a major label, it sounds liek one of the best damned indie records you've ever heard. No formulaic stuff. You can tell from Rux's CD that he and Holmes are suited for eachother, they both push envelopes and still come up with great music. This guy's voice is so perfect for the music Holmes has created. It's dark, but not self concioulsy dark. It's melodic, and expressive. I think Rux and Holmes should do a whole album together! I also love Martina Topley Bird's tracks-- always thought she was an extrordinary singer, and I love these tracks but they still remind me of stuff she'd done before with Tricky and I wish Holmes could have pulled her out of her element a little more. "Bad Thing" is groovy and dark as hell. 'For Lisa' was Ok, and 69 Police didn't impress me much-- but I'm telling you, the Holmes/Rux collaboration makes up for whatever's missing on this CD.
The Dark World Of David Holmes!.......2000-09-05
After showing great promise on his previous release-'Let's Get Killed',David Holmes returns with a dark C.D.,which has more thrills than the scariest of roller-coaster rides. David Holmes is probably the most innovative of artists in Ireland right now. This c.d. has so many influences and uses so many different musical styles, that it is easy to see why so many prominent celebrities in the world of music right now want to collaberate with the Belfast man. First of all this c.d. is not for the feint hearted or for people who want catchy tunes and a nice easy listen. It's very dark, aggressive but always exhillerating. The more I listen to this c.d. the more I notice new sounds, influences and reworkings of some more famous tunes. The very brief opening track is a gentle fifties sounding commercial-and it does not give you any guide as to what's to come.Enter track 2 with guest vocals from Carl Hancock Rux-who to me sounds a bit like a very modern Bowie. It's a brilliant track driven by an amazing bassline. Then Primal Screams Bobby Gillespie (sounding better than I've heard him in a long time) on a ninety m.p.h. modern punk track. He appears on the c.d. twice,as does Martina Topley(who oft collaberated with Tricky)on 2 of the best tracks she's done in years. Musical styles are in abundance here-punk,hard rock, hip hop, rap, ambience and not forgetting Jon Spencer's song 'Bad Thing' for a stupendous touch of the blues.Easily as good as Death In Vegas'-'Contina Sessions'-I actually think this c.d. though very similar in style and mood ,actually surpasses that effort. Definitely recommended for all modern music lovers!
The Best Retro-Progressive Funk/Punk/Soul CD...Ever!.......2000-07-26
And if that doesn't make sense, then you probably won't understand this cd on the first listen. And it's not techno. It's too 'organic' for that, but still mixes in samples here in there really sly. It's not techno because it's not some euro dj spinning drum and bass heavy tracks and coming out some retard of an 80's hip hop dj. It goes beyond techno, by going back into alot of forms of dance and mood music, and mixing them together.
And it's cinematic. Really really cinematic. From the first track and it's mix of commercial jingle and movie dialogue really takes it off. But the following tracks are really what makes it interesting.
Starting with the second track, a remake of 'Compared to What' featuring Carl Hancock Rux, Holmes and Rux mix together soul, hip hop, 90's R&B, and rapped spoken word poetry. It's about three decades of black music warped into a 4 minute track. The follow-up 'Sick City' with Bobby Gillespie on vocals sounds like some sort of manic acid-rap/rock track re-treading thru sounds like Iggy Pop, The Stooges, and Sly Stone. Martina Toppley-Bird's tracks also blend together mixes of soul, gospel, punk, and drum n' bass highlighted on her track 'Zero Tolerance'. All of the previous 3 mentioned artists guests on other songs, with Rux turning in a track that sounds like a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of 'I Am the Walrus' remixed by DJ Premier on 'The Living Room' and Bobby and Martina showing up on the mbient/trance/punk track 'Slip Your Skin'. The only real misstep on the album is 'Bad Thing' by Jon Spencer. Granted it's not a horrible song, or even a bad one. It is just so demented, hook-laiden, and dark, that an entire album composed of similar tracks would have been better. "Bow Down.." is seedy, but not dark and evil as that track.
The instrumentals that Holmes and his backing band (something that only the Lo-Fi All-Stars have mastered in electronica) compose are also worth the cd. Those highlights are easily '69 Police' (which could corssover to all types of fans of music with its strong melody and psychedlic mix of styles) and the obviously cinematic 'Hey Lisa' which closes the album and boasts a string section composed and conducted by David Arnold. Overall the album is highly recommended.
The styles of music that the cd mixes together, while focusing on black and cinematic sounds and grooves, should attract the interest of many people. If you like hip hop (#2), punk (#3), trip hop (#8), blues & psychedlica (#5), alternative-dance (#9) or film scores (#15) this cd is for you.
Bow Down To David Holmes.......2000-06-30
David Holmes' most commercial release yet is probably his darkest and most original, and the better it is for it. It features contributions from both Bobby Gillespie and Jon Spencer and they both turn in excellent performances. All in all this is a fantstic album very much in the same mould as Death In Vegas' "Contino Sessions", but in my opinion far surpases the standerds DIV have set.
Logical Progression.......2000-06-30
Upon first hearing this album....I was a bit surprised....I think I might have been expecting Let's Get Killed version 2....but I was very wrong. This album is much different simply because it is layered with beautiful voices, sultry funk.....and genius instrumentation. Do you have soul? If not, borrow some from David Holmes....don't look any further than "Bow Down To The Exit Sign". There are also many notable contributors to this amazing album, mostly from the English music scene (Primal Scream, etc.) Sit back, relax and enjoy.

Although David Holmes's Bow Down to the Exit Sign is intended to be the soundtrack of an as-yet-to-be-made film, the closest stylistic cousin in the Holmes canon is not the work he did for the film Out of Sight, nor is it his sweepingly cinematic debut or the New York City-on-acid travelogue that was his big commercial breakthrough. The most seemingly obvious predecessor is actually the U.K. release Essential Mix 98/01. The spirit of Holmes's super-eclectic DJ work (a world in which Brigitte Bardot, Plaid, Rare Earth, and Skylab all happily cohabitate) is here again on his latest outing, along with the additional element of more than a few outstanding vocal performances. Bobby Gillespie lends his hip sneer to the punky-fuzzy "Sick City" and "Slip Your Skin." Jon Spencer unleashes his afflicted-soul howl over the furiously fuming organ of "Bad Things." Tricky cohort Martina Topley-Bird is radiant amid the claustrophobic pulse of "Outrun," and Carl Hancock-Rux is nothing less than rock god-legendary, especially on the stunningly funky "Living Room." Holmes of course offers up a few instrumental treats as well, most notably "Hey Lisa," which is quietly pretty, and "69 Police," which immediately catapults itself into the realm of bouncy-fun classics such as Primal Scream's Loaded. --Bob Michaels
Customer Reviews:
David Holmes at his best.......2005-12-25
First off, I cannot believe the negative reviews this album is getting. It seems that people are expecting it to be something completely different, and when its not what they expected, they dismiss it. It's as if they gave it a spin in their car, didn't hear anything as catchy as "My Mate Paul" or "Gritty Shaker", and then tossed it. I'm not sure how that can be as this album is very hard to come by and I would think the people that are purchasing would invest a little more time into it.
In all fairness though, if you're only exposure to David Holmes is his work on soundtracks, and you were expecting something similar, then yes, I can see how this album would be a bit of a disappointment. I'll admit, I didn't think it was as good as some of Holmes' other albums(Lets Get killed, Come Get it I Got it) the first time I listened to it. It was much more cold, harsh, and uneasy. However, like with any great album, the more I listened to it, the more and more I started to like it, and understand that the album as a WHOLE is what makes it special.
From the opening jingle of "Live From The Peppermint Store", the album has a very strange alluring quality, and as soon as "Compared To What" (with one of the hardest hitting basslines I've encountered) kicks into high gear, I can't imagine how someone couldn't be mesmerized by the signature head-bopping strut of David Holmes' music. The rest of the album unfolds in almost theatrical fashion, with certain tracks providing neratives that give the album a very haunting feel ("Drexler's Apt - Aftermath, Afternoon) before giving way to the next oh-so-sweet Holmes drum fill, the tracks blending together seamlessly, each one providing further evidence that Holmes is a master at crafting cinematic tunes that freaking GROOVE.
The album showcases numerous musical styles, from old R&B & soul to punk, pop, rock, and blues with David Holmes blending them all together perfectly to make for a very unique and truly captivating musical experience. A few of my favorite tracks are "Compared to What", "Incite a Riot", "Living Room", and "Slip Your skin", but really, this album is absolutely stellar from start to finish, and should be experienced that way (be sure to read the liner notes as well).
This is definately David Holmes' most eclectic and ambitious release, and in my opinion his best and most rewarding. It's a shame that it is so hard to come by. If you're a fan of great music that goes beyond being pegged to a certain genre, then you will love "Bow Down to the Exit Sign".
One Good Song.......2005-09-26
In my opinion the only worth while song on here is 69 Police. Atleast the album is only $4
scramble to your feet.......2003-11-17
well, i'm not much for analyzing music either, just for enjoying or being moved by it as much as you, and normally i couldn't care less about writing a review, but had to, just to rectify this horrendous misrepresentation: this album rocks! i admit it starts somehow mannered, matter of fact, omit the first three tracks, the Les McCann cover 'Compared to what', check the bone-chillin Roberta Flack version instead, Bobby Gillespie on 'Sick city', and the lamentable Jon Spencer affectation 'Bad thing'. doesn't sound this album deserves the four stars, does it? but then suddenly all changes.
once 'voices, siren, rain' kicks in, this album 'starts fighting back, striking back, kicking ass!' 'Incite a riot', '69 police' and 'Living room' (with Hancock-Rux) are one jammin' psychedalic funkfest. Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie's second outing 'Slip your skin' also rocks, but despite the big names on the guest list, as far as the vocals go, Martina (Tricky's muse, or vice versa) really steals the show on the brooding 'Outrun' and the tight 'Zero tolerance'.
trax 6 to 15 are forty minutes of pure punk payback.
Heynoose.......2002-05-07
Yuck. I'm not one for analyzing music, just for enjoying it or being moved by it. This album frustrates on both counts. Junk.
"Bow Down" is right.......2001-09-21
Oh, good Lord, I love this album. I can see why some people might find it repetitive or directionless, but I'm convinced that these people aren't allowing themselves to be engulfed by this cd. It's an absolutely visceral experience when heard from beginning to end. Maybe I'm exaggerating by giving it 5 stars, but it's only because I rarely get drawn into albums this much, and I don't think there are many DJs out there who push themselves as much as Holmes. And though I still contend this album should be heard straight through from beginning to end, "Bad Thing", "69 Police" and "Living Room" have got to be the best tracks on here. It's really wonderful, and I think the fact that it can't be classified in a specific genre is a testament to Holmes' daring and appreciation of all kinds of music. He's the kind of person who SHOULD be making albums.

I bought this CD for one song - "Bow Down", and it was worth it. Some people sing about worship and some people worship - this CD is filled with worship. Song lyrics chosen are excellent.
It puts you right at the feet of the Living Most High God........1999-11-17
You know as soon as I received the cd I listened to it it is an awesome cd. Bow down, He is here and the reprise is such an awesome ending for an album, tape or cd. This has got to be the most awesome praise song todate. It must be played on radio stations across this country. You can tell the spirit of God was at this recording...no doubt. I have told many people about this one. Bishop Morton and all who help in this celebration I think God is pleased. God Bless You all out there and peace!
The epitome of Praise and Worship: Excellent.......1999-07-07
A wonderful offering to the LORD. I was amazed by the collective efforts of the psalmists and ministrels who blessed the Lord with praise and worship on this awesome recording. The corporate anointing that filled the Louisiana Superdome during this recording was marvelous... For those who are serious about experiencing the fullness of God, this is a must have recording.

Being a worshipper, I especially enjoyed "Stay Close" and "Bow Down and Worhsip Him". The entire CD is an awesome work of worship. May the Lord continue to bless this ministry of true love.

ISSUE RESOLVED ON THE EUPHRATES.......2005-06-19
One question I might find among the more difficult in my life would be - which is my favourite Handel oratorio? I suspect that my answer would generally be 'the one I heard most recently', and that, as I write this, is Belshazzar. It is a magnificent thing, a heavenly thing. It has taken me longer than it should have to come to an appreciation of what makes Handel the phenomenon - as a genius, as an artist, as a craftsman - that he is, but I am comforted to reflect that no less a genius than Haydn, at the age of nearly 70 gaining a more thorough knowledge of Handel in performance, was driven to say that he felt a mere apprentice. In his sense of how to pace a dramatic narrative, in his instinct for how to use the human voice in song and above all in chorus, in the matchless flexibility and adroitness he displays at word-setting and in the audacity of his melodic and harmonic effects I can think of nobody who can approach Handel on his own terms.
Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.
I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.
The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.
Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16
This 3CD set of George Frederic Handel's (1685-1759) "Belshazzar", from Archiv Production, a division of Universal Music, is proof again that transfer from vinyl to tape to disc brings with it improvements in listening that make the purchase a worthwhile addition to anyone's listening library. Written in 1744, "Belshazzar" is an oratorio in the operatic style that is wonderful oratorio, but lacking the true depth one expects to hear in an opera. London opera audiences of Handel's day agreed, as both "Belshazzar" and Handel's other offering of the period in the same style, "Hercules", were not terribly successful. Instead of the scheduled 24 performances only 16 were given and Handel never offered a full season of oratorio again. The Libretto by Charles Jennens (1700-1773) is, as the production notes say, meant "not only to show the fall of Babylon but to show it as a fulfillment of divine prediction and to confirm the biblical testimony by reference to classical history." There's only one problem, as good a quality as the CDs are, it is not possible to follow the full libretto and the accompanying booklet includes no text, which is a shame. I think the listening experience would have been increased immeasurably if one was able to follow the text of what is being sung. Nonetheless the dramatic narrative is fluid and even, and the English Concert and Choir provide nice balance to the less full vocal passages, as in Disc 3s "Oh Glorious prince", cut 10. There is enough of this throughout to keep one's interest, but disappointing if what one expects is another ""Messiah".
