4 out of 5 stars A collection of great instrumentals.......2006-08-10

Ian Anderson has always been known for his flute. What we have here is a flute player arranging and playing some very innovative flute.
The entire album is instrumental, so we miss out on Anderson's outstanding lyric writing talents.
Ian trades his lyrics in for some of the finest flute music you will ever want to hear.
There is not a bad song on the CD. The highlights for me include, In a Stone Circle, In the Grips of Stronger Stuff, and in defence of Faiths. These 3 compositions are not only outstanding but will stand the test of time, which in my mind is the only true test of music. You will never hear Ian Anderson compose anything more solid. The rest of the CD is basically elevator music with occasional highlights.
Ian plays the flute in his patented style and is in top form.
This is much better than its predecessor Walk into Light.
If you are a Jethro Tull fan this should interest you.

2 out of 5 stars Less Than Divine.......2006-07-28

For the record, I've been a huge fan of Jethro Tull since 1968 and a great admirer of Ian Anderson's recent work, such as "The Secret Language of Birds." Anderson is, in my estimation, one of the more significant composer/musicians of our day, and his post-Jethro Tull work has been quite wonderful.

Having said that, I am disappointed with his Twelve Dances with God. The music is pretty, in a generic way, but it lacks the compositional intricacy that is the hallmark of Anderson's work. There are few, if any, key modulations, which Anderson does so well in other works. The pieces are all instrumental - flute together with orchestral instruments and the occasional keyboard. They are all pleasant, in a "new age" sort of way, but lacking musical substance. Nice background music for the office or at home, perhaps.

My chief disappointment is that all twelve pieces sound monotonously similar. I assumed that the theme of this album is the diversity of expressions as humans attempt to dance with God. Leaving the theological aspects aside (this is, after all, an album of music not a theological text), I would have expected a greater diversity of rhythm and tune. However, each track seems to flow into the next. Perhaps this is reflective of "new age spirituality" where truth and deity are rather elastic, but that would take some elucidation from Ian Anderson himself. The music itself doesn't seem to have much to say. If these are twelve dances with God, perhaps it would be better to let Him take the lead.

5 out of 5 stars completely satisfied..........2004-08-09

I have been a long time Tull fan and consequently, Ian Anderson.
As mentioned in earlier reviews on this page, this is a true gem and a tribute to Ians ability to be musically creative, fluid and expansive in a musical genre distinctly different from his rock and blues roots.

5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2004-05-19

This album holds me in rapt fascination whenever I play it. Each song is Anderson's interpretation of the spirit of one of Earths religions. The 12 songs are unique in their own right, but somehow mesh with each other, like they are all really dancing with the same God. Each time I listen to this work I hear more or feel something different. It is a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars About as heavy as melodic death metal gets.......2006-06-24

After bouncing around from label to label, the melodeath metal band known as Callenish Circle finally found a comfortable home with Metal Blade Records for their fifth full length disc, "Pitch. Black. Effects."

Believe it or not, this band is NOT from Sweden. Sure, there's no way you could have known that while listening to this C.D., but CC actually hail from the Netherlands. The riffs on songs like "Behind Lines" are very fiery and fast, and often sound like they could have been lifted from an In Flames or old Soilwork demo, the drum work is nimble and fast, and the scratchy vocals are sort of in the same vein as God Dethroned. This resulting sound is one which is about as heavy as metal gets which still retains the "melodic" prefix.

Many of the songs race by at a high speed but they also usually manage to be somewhat melodic. There are a few tracks which are fast, slamming, melody deficient onslaughts. "This Day You Regret" opens up the album on a strong note with a throbbing rhythm which is bursting at the seams with white hot, chug and churn riffs. Several tracks later, "Sweet Cyanide" and "Self Inflicted" have whiplash, breakneck tempos with scorching, propulsive guitar leads and mini solos; "Blind" is backed by huge, thick, churning, almost thunderous guitars, quick, thumping drums, and deep, monstrous barks; and, lastly, "Guess Again" shoots by with an explosive guitar and double bass rhythm.

But most of these songs slip in at least a few seconds of synthesizers and/or a melodic, Maiden-esque guitar lick for good measure. For example, "Ignorant" offsets humming, resonating, Skinny Puppy-ish keyboards in the verses with crunchy riffs and pounding drums in the choruses. And "Schwarzes Licht" is a mostly ambient and melodic song with atmospheric keyboards and an ominous spoken word passage.

Although this band doesn't seem very intent on breaking new ground, "Pitch. Black. Effects" clearly showcases solid songwriting skills and exceptional instrumental abilities. Callenish Circle are definitely a promising band, and they deserve your attention as much as almost any other melodeath band out there today.

4 out of 5 stars good but they got a better cd.......2006-06-08

It is a good cd but my passion your pain is better. I really like their music better without the weird intros and techno music. It just sounds cleaner. But if you get this cd the song blind is really mean, great guitar good lyrics and the drums rule.

5 out of 5 stars Shimmering Space Metal.......2006-03-30

This Dutch band's new album is a real treat for industrial metal fans. Shimmering, swirling keyboard textures and rhythmically-enhancing beats and samples add whole other dimensions to jagged, chugging riffs. There are moments of powerful thrash (especially so on "Guess Again"), and some effectively dynamic screams from "vo-killist" Pat Savelkoul. There are also some terrific breakdowns into spacey, ambient keyboards and drum clashes, some effective guitar solos, spoken-word female vocals...PITCH.BLACK.EFFECTS is a mixed bacg of treats. The album fits into some sort of space between Meshuggah, later In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, and Fear Factory, making for some excellent industrial-melodic death metal. Perhaps the resulting genre is "Space Metal?" Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Substance filled, Dutch, Melo-Death! mmm... mmm... Good........2006-03-22

CALLENISH CIRCLE - Pitch.Black.Effect
-
So you might be asking yourself, what sets Callenish Circle apart from countless other Melo-Death bands flooding the scene right now?

#1. Their Dutch - Repeat, not Scandinavian! (But seriously...)
#2. They have Substance! I mean real substance. They have a variety of industrial sounding keys, vocal effects, samples etc...

At first glance they may come across as a Dark Tranquillity clone... Though I see where the comparison fits, I can assure you this isn't the case. Though the overall sound is similar to DT's Character, they employ an even thicker industrial accent to their music.
CC may be one of the few Metal bands that have understood how effective keys and samples can be whenever they are used appropriately.
(i.e. not like the Nu-Metal keys heard on Reroute/Soundtrack era In Flames. Or the flamboyant keyboards used by Children of Bodom.)

Though this album may not be anything groundbreaking it doesn't stop me loving this CD... From start to finish this is a fantastic album. Even though the repetition of track 7, `Guess Again' does test my patience a bit the rest of the album is solid material. `Pitch.Black.Effect' may be their 5th album, but it is my first intro to the band and I can assure you I will be sampling their back catalogue very soon.

Favorite Songs: Sweet Cyanide, As You Speak and This Day You Regret.

4 out of 5 stars Callenish Circle are as good as some similar Swedish bands........2006-02-22

I agree with the other reviewers that say this is a solid melodic death metal release. It is as good as Soilwork used to be, and their sound can be compared in a sense to Darkane as well. It is different than Dark Tranquillity, however, whom I still like the best out of the melodic death genre. They deserve four stars for their efforts here, but they lack the variety and technical skill of that band. Don't get me wrong, they are good. Any fan of the Swedish/Finnish "Gothenburg" melodic death metal style will enjoy this Dutch band. Check out their previous album. It is just as good, if not better.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-05-20

Callenish Circle has become one of my favorite melodic death metal bands ever. This album was the first I ever heard by them, and I just finished listening to it about 10 minutes ago.

On first listen, they reminded me a lot of Nightrage's sound, except with darker vocals & even keyboards. Even before I heard the first ballad on the album, I knew there was going to be one. This album isn't ultra-fast on every song, but nevertheless, it packs a huge punch.

I highly recommend this album to any fans of melodic death metal. Right now I'm listening to their newest release, Pitch.Black.Effect, and so far it's better than this album.

4 out of 5 stars Old school thrash/speed metal for new school tastes.......2005-08-02

This album doesn't differ a whole lot from their previous "Flesh_Power_Dominion" album apart
from better production and a slightly more aggressive sound. There's a couple slight cosmetic
touches like an industrial/techno intro here and there and more death metal backup vocals than
previously but other than that this is largely an extension of the same speed/thrash metal they
popularized on their last record.

That's not to say you're fine just listening to their last album. Like their last record, this thing is full
of solid speed metal riffing almost from start to finish. The only time it slows down is for the
couple power ballad type songs that frankly I could do without. I'm sure they're meant to break up
the pace so this record doesn't get monotonous but they could accomplish the same thing with
mid-paced breakdowns like they do on "Dwelling In Disdain" and almost every other cut. It also
doesn't help that one of these ballad type songs clocks in at over seven minutes but I
digress...let's focus on the strengths.

Most of these songs follow a pretty similar pattern...ultra tight old school speed metal riffing
heavily influenced by early thrash punctuated by tasteful leads that are reminiscent of "And
Justice For All" period Metallica. If that sounds like they are a throwback to the glory days of
thrash/speed metal then you'd be right. There's no crazy time changes, over the top drumming or
metalcore mosh parts, just good clean metal sung by a guy that could fill in for Kreator any day.
That's not to say this album lacks any of the dynamism of their peers or eschews more modern
metal songwriting techniques like aggressive double bass drumming or more melodic
Gothenburg style riffs. Songs like "My Hate Unfolds" and "This Translucent Path" blend that
stepped up double bass aggression and melody with an old school German thrash sound to
powerful affect.

For fans of early thrash and speed metal like Kreator, Sodom and pre-Black album Metallica you
really can't go wrong with this release. It's a perfect blend of the straightforward fury of early
German thrash with the power, structure and solos of classic speed metal delivered in a more
scathing style than any of those pioneers could probably imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Under the radar, above the cut.......2005-07-09

Callenish Circle is one of those bands that most metal fans will say "Who??" about when asked about them. This is not because they lack talent or intensity. They just happen to be a band that has not gotten much, if any, publicity from the metal press. After all, who would think a bunch of Dutch guys can throw down some brutal melodic death?
I've been listening since "Graceful... yet forbidding". I happened upon Callenish Circle because I am half Dutch myself and was looking to find Dutch metal bands. And what a find I made....
Anyway on to this album. My Passion Your Pain intensifies Callenish Circle's sound tenfold. In this latest offering, they strip away the American Pantera-esque sound in favor of a purely aggresive Scandinavian tone remnicient of At the Gates. The black metal vocals are still key in driving the razor sharp ultra-melodic rythyms found in nearly every track. One listen to "My Hate Unfolds" will sum up what these guys are all about. It is refreshing to see a band that keeps it's head low and cranks out crushingly brutal and catchy melodic death while all the other players on the field are subcuming to what record companies are pushing for. (With the notable exception of Dark Tranquillity) Fans of the genre will love this album. A no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the BEST medodic death around today!.......2005-01-23

Since I bought My Passion Your Pain, Callenish Circle has quickly become one of my favorite bands. I just seem to be playing it more and more.

Everybody feels the need to say that this has been done before. It fits into an existing genre, so yes, obviously something similar has been done before. If it hadn't, it would have created it's own genre. Get over it.

Even those who have something against this album and band are admitting that this is quality work. Personally, I get something from this album that I don't get from Slaughter of the Soul. Not to knock Slaughter of the Soul at all, I love that album, but it's something different.

Many albums these days are ok. Some are good. A few are great. This one is a must own. Detractors will continue to call it unoriginal, but in the end, what matters most is HOW THE ALBUM SOUNDS. This album sounds amazing. End of story.

3 out of 5 stars Heard it before.......2004-05-11

It is certainly no surprise that Callenish Circle has gathered a devoted fanbase following their signing and promotion by Metal Blade Records. The ever-increasing popularity of melodic death metal has allowed the genre to achieve a greater degree of success than I had originally envisioned and given many superb artists the opportunity to display their talents. Tragically, the increased popularity of the genre has also encouraged stagnation within the style in the form of unoriginality and incompetence. Callenish Circle is fortunate in that they execute the style far better than many other bands that play melodic death metal. However, Callenish Circle ultimately fails to attain a sense of individuality, deriving the entirety of their sound from the melodic death style heavily rooted in thrash metal and popularized by the release of At the Gates' "Slaughter of the Soul".

Certainly Callenish Circle will appeal to many people. "My Passion // Your Pain" is well-executed and maintains the solid level of musicianship that the band's previous albums displayed. Fans of At the Gates, the Haunted and similar bands should most definitely make an effort to add this album to their collection. Standout tracks include the Metal Blade single "Soul Messiah" as well as the first title track ("My Passion"), "This Truculent Path" and "What Could Have Been". The latter is about as close to a ballad as can be composed within the constraints of melodic death metal without sounding ultra-cheesy; the track is really quite well-done.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful..........2005-02-19

I actually got this one after My passion//your pain. I also got it after Forbidden Empathy, and I was expecting something halfway between the two. It is actually more like My passion//your pain. If you enjoyed that album, I really can't recommend this one highly enough. It has the same basic feel, yet distinct. After only a couple listens, I have really bonded with this CD. I would still consider My passion//your pain to be a superior work, this one is still a must have. I'm upset that I didn't know about them back in 2002, or I could have been enjoying this one since then!

5 out of 5 stars This one is a must.......2004-12-01

There's a lot of Gothenburg out there. That is, bands that try their hand at the Gothenburg sound. You know, wannabes. Now, don't get me wrong, there are a great deal of new acts emerging in the scene, impressing the new audiences with genius in the vein of past melodeath gods... The Duskfall, Vehemence (Though they have their own sound), and even The Black Dahlia Murder.

But, like I said, they are still the end result of a long line of Gothenburg stylists, and Callenish Circle is one of those bands that started way back in the early goings...

Near the front of the line.

If I was going to make a list of all the essentials for a melodeath fan, I'd definitely include In Flames (Lunar Strain, The Jesters Race, Whoracle, Colony, Clayman), At the Gates (Slaughter of the Soul), Dark Tranquillity (Projector, Haven, Damage Done), and then, I'd say throw some Callenish Circle and Soilwork in there too.

Callenish Circle? Which album? Well, Flesh Power Dominion is a pretty solid candidate, to say the least. It really stands alongside the considered greats of it's genre, and delivers one killing song after another, until you can't help but bang your head.

Consider this album as a solid release by a very solid Melodeath band, and expect a variety of songs, delivered in an endless flow of melodeath riffing glory.

The only bad thing about the album is that they don't give the lyrics for "Bleeding."

5 out of 5 stars One of the best metal albums ever.......2003-10-30

The CD is awesome, great musicianship. I liked every song on the album, it would be difficult to pick the best one, but I think my favorite is "Suffer My Disbelief".
The sound is more like older In Flames meet Godgory. Very sharp guitar, lyrics are in vein of Children Of Bodom.
Those guys are what Soilwork could only wish to sound like.
So, if you like Gotheburg sound Melodic Death Metal with none of those threndy nu-metal elements, you defenetly should check this album out.

5 out of 5 stars These Guys Rock ! ! !.......2003-03-21

Extremely melodic, unbelievable music for fans of In Flames, Gardenian, Children of Bodom and Dark Tranquility. If you don't have it, buy it because you won't be dissapointed. I can't wait for their next album ! !

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2003-01-19

If you like melodic death metal like in flames, soilwork, and arch enemy this album will definetaly be worth getting. Callenish circle don't play quite as many solos as say arch enemy but they sure are melodic and up there with one of my favorite albums.

When fronted by its founder, the amazing Jacob "Killer" Miller, who died tragically in a car accident in the late 1980s, this group was a reggae institution. His replacement, Carlton Coffee, is no vocal slouch, but who, after all, could fill Jacob's shoes? As this album proves, the group's writing also suffered from that great loss. The new tunes in this collection are faintly derivative, though respectable, efforts along the lines of the usual reggae idioms. Inner Circle does better on the covers--"Black Roses," "Freedom Street," and a jumped-up version of the '70s reggae classic "Picture on the Wall." --Elena Oumano

I would just like to say that this is music for the soul . I heard it while dancing in a "disco" on the island of Mayreau , in the Grenadines. Only 400 people live on this island yet they had one of the best d. j.'s,with a terrific library of music. When he played Black Roses it was the first time I had heard it and it moved through me straight to my heart and soul. I even tried to buy the c.d. from the d.j. I knew I had to have it . Now I'll buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Two of the best from an incredible album.......2003-12-21

I recommend buying Vitalogy, but this single gives you a taste of the range of music, as well as of Ed's voice, that the full album serves up. Both songs rock, one in your face, the other in your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Spins me around!.......2002-04-11

This cd single was released as a preview of two songs "taken from the forthcoming epic release: vitalogy," therefore you will not find new sogs, bsides, or different mixes on this cd. Therefore I only recommend this cd if:
A. you are a PJ collector (obviously)
b. if you like the song and dont want to buy the whole album. (aso obvious)

"Spin the Black Circle" deals with the soothing power of Ed Vedder's record collection. In the PJ Vitalogy book "liner notes" there is a doodle that says: "save vinyl" and is also a depiction of the lead singers addiction to Vinyl LPs. One of the reasons you can get almost any PJ album on vinyl.
So this song is basically just a narration on how a record is played and how that makes him feel.

"Tremor Christ" which is one of the most occult PJ songs. This one is filled with metaphores, that all together tell a story. This story is maybe not understandable by anyone but E.V., therefore many people tend to not like this song at first, but the voice and the music is touching, and very heart felt. Its one of the best songs on "vitalogy."

2 out of 5 stars I agree with most of the others.......2000-11-30

There is little point in buying this CD. It has the album versions (i.e. not live or rerecorded) of two songs: "Spin the Black Circle" and "Tremor Christ," both of which are great songs, but, like other reviewers stated, they're already found on VITALOGY. That's the reason I give it 2 stars. The same goes for the "Who You Are" single, which also has no non-album tracks.

3 out of 5 stars Two of the best VITALOGY songs. So just buy the album........2000-11-15

These are two of the best cuts from Vitalogy. Since STBC was the first single from the album, long before it was released, it was nice to get a listen to something else from Pearl Jam's much anticipated third record, but since you can get the album this CD really isn't anything special. Just buy Vitalogy and let it all sink in.

5 out of 5 stars 2 great songs from PJ.......2000-05-16

I don't care what any one says. if you are an avid pearl jam fan these two song, as you know, are some of their best work.

Zero comfort margin and human harvest are a must have if you are a fan of the death/grind genre. Although this record isn't recorded particularly clearly turn it up and it still gives an amazing affect. Overwhelmingly fast drumming, chuggy and speedy string work and extremely powerful, inhuman vocals are what makes circle of dead children masters of obscene metal. As many deathmetal/grindcore/horrorcore bands circle of dead children have an evil lute to their music, the fact that this cd comes with "TERROR ALERT: may contain backward and/or subliminal messages" written down the side of the case you can tell that circle of dead children have really pushed the boat out on this evil aura. The album art work containing many pictures of dissection notes and sketches also take a look at the picture of the little devil on page three of the booklet, look familiar? The vocals on this album are what make it for me; vocalist Joe Horvath uses a brilliant array of death growls, shrieks, screams, squeals and some sounds that I have never heard made by any man nor beast. I say buy this album and crank it up.

5 out of 5 stars You can hold onto your Faith but I'll try to hold back my laughter.......2006-02-23

Circle Of Dead Children is a band I stumbled upon completely by mistake. The name of the band and the cover art piqued my interest so I decided to get Zero Comfort Margine. I expected some pretty insane music judging from the reviews but no review will ever prepare you for for how completely chaotic this band really is.

Yes this is metal, so of course the heavy riffs, double bass drums, and crazy bass will be there. But for me it's the vocals that sets CoDC apart from the others. You may think you've heard a death metal vocalist have range, but I can almost guarantee that none can touch Joe Horvath. No words can really describe his style, but let it be known that he's the best I've ever heard.

The fact that there's a 'Terror Alert' on the CD that says this CD "may contain backward and/or subliminal messages" kind of lets you in on what to expect, that and the song titles. There are some rather funny sound clips during a few of the songs that make a statement or two as well, I like the one where the guys talks about complete freedom the best. The lyrics are especially brutal, something you really just need to read for yourself. Lets just say it's quite clear this band is mad about a lot of things. Basically, Circle Of Dead Children is the band that your mom would never want you to listen to.

My favorite songs are No Tears Fall Through Hollow Eye Sockets, Host(age), Bohemian Grave, Strip Naked For The Killer, and For Black Eyes Only a.k.a. Depopulate: Tears Of Illuminati. Despite the fact that this is such a short CD, I loved every minute of it. If you're new to this brand of metal, definitely look elsewhere first, I thought I was into some heavy stuff but this CD blew me away. Suffice to say, this won't be the last Circle Of Dead Children CD I buy.

5 out of 5 stars Death Grind like no other........2007-07-05

Circle of Dead Children are one of the heaviest bands on the face of the earth. Their music is mind-blowingly heavy. Unrelenting, harsh and intelligent. They are not the typical, Cannibal Corpse-like, blood and guts deathgrind band. They speak in tongues of demons, yet they know that there is something much larger controlling what you hear and see. Imagine a version of Napalm Death, with no holds barred and no peers.

This album is in the eyes of most fans I've talked to, the bands best, and I agree. Every track is worth its weight in gold. Nineteen in total, and with tracks as short as 6 seconds, to over four minutes. Not epic, like say Nile, Vital Remains or Opeth, but in their own field.
My personal favorite album for the past couple years.

    Ugly music. Pure ugly.

This is wicked modern grindcore. Chaotic, gets the blood flowing, what more do you expect? It's grind? The blastbeats = <333.

If you're wanting a modern grind release that never gets tiring, buy this. And anything else by Circle of Dead Children.

5 out of 5 stars Best 2003 extreme metal album.......2006-06-20

Human Harvest is the diary of a desperate man very much at odds with every aspect of society. Departing from the archtypal lyrics common to most death and deathgrind bands which mainly focus on depictions of gore, murder, drug use, rape and other forms of violence and sexual depravity - Circle of Dead Children presents some profoundly philosophic and insightful lyrics in Human Harvest. The lyrics are presented in a neo-transcendtalist poetic prose that manages to convey great disillusionment, frustration and rage.

Central lyrical motifs include: humanity's unnatural rise to the "peak of evolution's tower" and the peversion that brings, the eradication of "tumor mankind", governmental sophistry and thought opression in "flawless domination," humanity's destructive greed, impulse and tendency to instantly gratify and remain bovine, the role that drugs has to do with keeping the people pacified, apathethic and idiotic, automation, fear and mediocrity in society, the ongoing charade of normalcy and achievment that masquerades on top of a rotten foundation (think of Hamlet, King Claudius' speech in Act II, Scene II in which he mourns for King Hamlet's death but celebrates in the same breath after the marrying of his wife and the crowning of a new king, himself) and the destruction of nature and natural logic.

    "My Supernatural (Bells Ring Slowly)"

    This wound cannot be patched
as my blood runs gelatinous, sweet and black
Only to be tasted by the chafed lips of the inflictor, a mirror
    The heavy-handed swift punishing judge
whose sentence is lifelong and indifferent
    as puddles of stagnant water
You cannot stop the bleeding with patches alone,
as saturation will reject all but infliction
Reparations all slide off into oblivion
The hunter and the hunted have become one
    I was borne for self-destruction
    Borne to bleed and freeze
Tears used to jimmy dried scabs of blood from these sheets
Pills to control, to redirect, to attempt to unlearn
Unsatisfied with what this world has had to offer
Satisfaction when the heart stiffens and succumbs
to the hunter's hands, gelatinous, sweet and black
No more pills, no more adjournment
    The higher the walls around
the more I will jerk them down upon me
It has become easier to bury the bodies
than to bury the memories and impulsive thoughts
that serve only to confuse and burden
One hand on the shovel, the other around my throat
    Borne to bleed and freeze
I have broken all the warm hands that heal
    Bones snap and shatter
Muscle tissue around the eyes stretch
and quiver like a fish skinned alive
    The only honest satisfaction
Cold and weak, I hope none remember
I will be happy to forget

Circle of Dead Children is technically an extremely brutal band.

Josama Bin Horvath offers some of the best vocals in extreme metal - with inhuman curdles, piercing and demonic shrieks, and toxic, wet lows unlike any band you will ever hear. Amazingly Joe manages to perform these vocals with no distortion. The instrumentation perfectly accompanies Joe's vocals and the overall mood of the lyrics - the vocals never sound disconnected as is the case with many death metal bands.

There isn't any band that comes to mind that sounds like Circle of Dead Children technically. Although you're going to hear some classic deathgrind conventions the implementation of these conventions along with heavy influences from necrodeath black metal, hardcore and extreme death metal promises a unique, addictive sound. The album has a droning, dark, organic guitar track that seems designed to mainly support the vocals - which it does perfectly. Rarely at times in this album the guitars sound Darkthrone-esque for a few moments (usually during blast beats) but then return to support the vocals. The drums are hardcore influenced and provide a perfect, dynamic tempo for the entire album which often brings the action into a slow, vicious interlude only to explode once more into the extreme grinding that dominates most of the album. Unlike other death metal pieces, Human Harvest has a varied tempo that shifts many times throughout one song, making it easily listenable and rememberable. Circle of Dead Children makes use of some terrifying industrial and electronic samples on this album as well. Although its pretty difficult to describe Circle's sound in this review - rest assured that it is refreshing and unlike anything you have heard. The coming together of three very innovative tracks - guitar, drum and vocals, all individually offering something progressive to the table in their own right, make Circle of Dead Children one of the best extreme metal bands around.

Overall Human Harvest is a huge landmark in the evolution of the deathgrind genre and extreme metal in general - it offers insightful, philosophic lyrics and a progresive, unique, evolutionary sound that proves that its OK to be influenced by other types of music. Human Harvest is THE 2003 extreme metal album of the year, and if you havn't heard it yet, you're doing yourself a disservice.

5 out of 5 stars This is just a reenactment of the thoughts projected from your eyes.......2006-05-19

"Store a lot. Vent a little."
"Human Harvest is the spit from our tongues and the bile from the bottom of our guts."
    -CODC

From beginning to end, Human Harvest is quite possibly the most devastating CD I've ever heard. And if the "Store a lot, vent a little" theory is correct as they say it is, I'm almost afraid to hear them let every ounce of hate they have towards everyone out.

On the outside Circle Of Dead Children seem to be just another death metal band, I mean all the ingredients are there...double bass and some great guitar riffs. However, CODC's real gift is in their vocalist, Joe Horvath. Sure the band is good alone, but with Joe bellowing, screeching, and doing everthing short of singing through each of the 19 songs, it's a definite recipe of either loving this band or hating them.

My favorite songs are We Wear The Gimp Mask, Sleepwalker, Mother Pig, White Trash Headache, and Shadow Of The Narcissist. If you're looking for nothing but non-stop heaviness, unforgiving vocals/lyrics, and a band with only three members doing everything you could imagine, then Human Harvest, and, more importantly, Circle Of Dead Children, deserve every bit of your attention.

    5 out of 5 stars MAXIMUM CHAOS!!!!.......2002-06-15

Circle Of Dead Children construct a sonic tornado that is insanely complex and brutal. There is no set song structure present throughout The Genocide Machine. "Songs" if you can call each of the bursts of blistering sound a song , are hyper-active explosions of sound that alternate from punishing speed to bone - crunching breakdowns. The vocals on The Genocide Machine are the lowest most guttural vocals i have ever heard in the Grindcore genre ; scraping the gray matter off your brain and out of your ears. There are no set verses and choruses , the walls of sound are so huge and powerful they will knock you to the ground in a bloody , ball of flesh. The theme of The Genocide Machine deals with the destruction of nature and the ecosystem. So if you are brave enough ; step up to the plate and purchase The Genocide Machine now!

5 out of 5 stars Grindcore at its finest.......2002-05-28

THE GENOCIDE MACHINE is Circle Of Dead Children's third album. It
is absolutely surreal. It's one of those albums that elevates grindcore to musical art. Together, the band is tight and every song will make your jaw drop at the beauty of it all. I don't
like to use the word "brutal" because I find grindcore beautiful-but this album is BRUTAL. Joe Horvath is an amazing vocalist and
the instrumentalists behind him are brilliant.
