The Black Eyed Peas' debut, Behind the Front, may sound thoroughly familiar: like A Tribe Called Quest, they sprout positive, deftly delivered lyrics out of their light jazz, R&B, and funk tracks; like the Roots, this multi-ethnic outfit's three MCs drop science in front of a live band that builds its grooves organically; and at their best, such as on the pop and reggae-flavored "Karma," the group can out-Fugee the Fugees. For some reason, though, the mostly mild, largely scratchless and sample-free record can--at times--be downright tepid. But for the most part, it works--sometimes brilliantly--and as a break from the mostly belligerent voices in hip-hop's mainstream, we can definitely use more of what the Peas have to offer. --Roni Sarig

Even Raw, Better Group Emerged from Underground.......2006-08-06
Another better group got the deal from the underground, where conscious and dedicated artists have always been since the birth of the hip hop--simply, that was the first impression of Black Eyed Peas when they released their first album, Behind The Front, in 1998. The scene enjoyed their attitude trying to inherit the hip hop sprit, criticizing the superficial image--"I see you try to diss our function by stating that we can't rap. Is it cause we don't wear Tommy Hilfiger or baseball caps" ("Falling Up"). However, the album is monotonous and raw due to lack of variety in MC styles and beats. Fast and plain raps on light funk continue without significant changes in contents and moods. Skits, which would disappear in next album and later, make it more tiresome.
As bad as the food its name is derived from.......2006-06-20
Black Eyed Peas have been making a name for themselves by selling to the non-intellectuals, with dumbed down lyrics, lame beats, and annoying vocals. Only in America is this the formula for certain success. Just when you thought that no band could cause an aneurysm more than Gwen Stefani, it looks like Black Eyed Peas has become number one.
criminally underrated album.......2006-02-08
The Black Eyed Peas (before they became huge) used to be good. Really good. 'Behind the Front' is quite simply one of the best pure hip-hop albums I've heard in my lifetime. The beats are incredibly catchy, yet they're not the typical kind of recycled beat garbage you hear on their Elephunk and Monkey Business albums. These beats are fresh, lively. I would heartily recommend this album to ANYONE. Not just lovers of hip hop. Anyone who enjoys really groovy beats and adequate lyrics will love this album.
I suppose I can't blame BEP for selling out. Their first two albums were great, but they were getting no exposure, so they did what needed to be done (added Fergie and started putting out garbage) in order to make money. I'll just always wonder what might have been....
Da' Peas Pre-Fergie Debut and One Of Their Best To Date!.......2006-01-18
The first time I ever saw The Black Eyed Peas incredible
live show was in the summer of 1998 in NYC, and the
next day I was at the Virgin Megastore buying this album.."Behind The Front"!!
I was hooked and turned everyone I knew on to them!
This was (to me) when "Da' Peas" were at their best...
before the addition of Fergie and that sing-songy
commercial BS that they do now!
I love everything on this CD, including the little
game-show-like snipets which link the songs together.
It was funky, funny, trippy, hip-hop and even though
alot of people say they had too much "Tribe Called Quest"
in their sound at the time, if you had seen them live back
then you would've known that "Da' Peas" had their own
thing brewin' in a big way!
I would take this one and their follow-up
"Bridging The Gap" over their new stuff any
day of the week!
Okay--"Elephunk" was cool for the most part,
but they were already diluting their funk by then
and were actively seeking a pop audience.
From the new set, aptly named "Monkey Business",
the only one that really moves me is "Don't Lie"
but the rest puts me to sleep!
4-Real!--If you want to feel what BEP was about,
then "Behind The Front" and "Bridging The Gap"
are the ones baby!
Incidentally, there were some hot videos from those
two CD's which got little airplay on MTV, BET or VH-1.
Why do you have to sell your artistic soul and dull
your creativity these days to get acceptance in the pop world?
B4.......2005-11-28
They went Pop or Rock N roll of whatever that stuff is they are doing. This is a good CD if u dont like a lot of cussing and peaceful type of raps

Customer Reviews:
Something very precious.......2004-11-16
John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness
Great historical resource.......2000-08-24
This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.
However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

psychobilly romper room stomp.......2006-06-05
I have been listening to the "cemetary shoes" album. Okay now be warned before you rush into Johnny he is considered to be in the Genre of "PSYCHOBILLY" so if you do not have at least a passsing appreciation of Rockabilly, punk, goth, and alt country. So don't blame me if he scares the hell out of you or you just don't get it, but if you can get past any prejudices or dislikes you initially have of the music and really listen to the man, he has something to say and a very unique way of saying it. you can hear a few samples of Johnny on his website at www.johnnydowd.com Here are the lyrics to one of his songs that I really like the words to,
Billy Blu
A crooked little man / lives in the underground
Sometimes he goes up / but mostly he stays down
People call him Billy / William is his name
In the coming darkness / he's the keeper of the flame
He repairs radios / with alien transistors
Cosmic commnication / between brothers and sisters
He has information / unavailable to most
He converses with angels / and sleeps with ghosts
Silence is a sadness / a bird with a song
Billy is a sailor / between right and wrong
A world of light and promise / is beyond his memory
In the present he is occupied / preparing for eternity
Lucifer is coming / don't let the children hear
The devil's in the wood pile / judgment day is near
Things that seem simple / are extremely complicated
When you scratch the surface / of things gold-plated
© Johnny Dowd
I hope the more adventurous of you take a listen and give him half a chance and those less adventurous look at all the pictures of his pretty face (well at least that was the one good thing one young lady could find about him). On another interesting note about Johnny he didn't record his first album until he was 50 years old. Well guess I can't complain I didn't put out my first book until I was 34, and I had twenty odd years of material back logged. Which we can really blame on Bob because I really didn't think much of the "bits" I wrote until I heard SBR and I thought man I want to make statements like that. I look at Johnny's lyrics and it so often reminds me of the ways that I string words together. So take a listen, check out what he says, and always keep an open mind, remember don't judge a book by it's cover (or a book of poetry by it's title).
Meh........2004-11-12
Man oh man...you know I love JD, but this album is sort of making me question me faith. I question whether two stars is really fair, but I gave three to The Pawnbroker's Wife, and this is definitely inferior to that one, so that's what it's getting. The most obvious disappointment here--and I think most fans would agree with me on this--is the absence of the immaculate Kim Sherwood-Caso's vocal talents. This was always a big part of the appeal of any Dowd album; she made good songs into stunning songs, and I suspect that, even if the ones here aren't as good as usual, she could have partially redeemed some of them. I certainly hope the two of them haven't had some sort of falling out, and that we'll hear more of her in future Dowd recordings.
Here's what's good about this album: the frenzied 'Garden of Delights.' I would say that this is the one song here that approaches classic status; an unnervingly intense tale of murder/suicide. Also pretty good: 'Wedding Dress,' with its entertaining southern gothic lyric (maybe Dowd should write books). That and 'Brother Jim' have a gospel feel to them (even if one's about a crossdressing butcher and the other a clerical murderer). 'Whisper in the Nag's Ear' might be okay on its own, but it just seems pointlessly overdone compared to the spare original version on Pictures From Life's Other Side.
But...most of the songs are just kind of there. Not unpleasant to listen to, but not exactly exciting either. I expect a lot more from the guy who wrote 'Worried Mind' and 'Hell or High Water.' Better luck next time.
Clever, smart, interesting music.......2004-11-09
Johnny Dowd makes me appreciate having ears to hear with and a mind to think with. Here is a man who, in a just world, would enjoy the success that more commercial musicians do today; that he does not is a real crime (then again, the world's loss is his fans' gain). His music is deep, dark and thoughtful, but well crafted, like an Alfred Hitchcock film. The tunes take some getting used to, as does his voice, because they cover material not usually associated with today's homogenized and emasculated pop and radio scene. But like most acquired tastes, you wonder how you ever got along without it. He writes music like the moon casts shadows, makes you look over your shoulder, and consider your fate. His albums, including his recent, Cemetary Shoes, deal with topics from the seamy side of life, a portion of the world that is anathema to the Britneys, the Jessicas, and the other pop tarts of music. If you appreciate artistry, thought and challenge, check out the Dowd catalog. Stretch your imagination a little. Take a chance on his music and experience an enveloping warmth that is cognition and emotion melding.
