Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

If it wasn't for the opera this would be a great CD.

Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

Sarah's Best Easy Listening CD.......2007-03-15

Sarah Brightman's talent is limitless. Her soprano and/or alto voice is among the best and she lets it show in 'CLASSICS'. CLASSICS is a beautiful, easy listening, and peaceful CD. CLASSICS is one to listen to in tranquil or relaxing moments. "CLASICS" is a collection of great pieces of music written by great composers (Shuburt, Handel, Chopin, Puccini, and the like). I have listened to CLASSICS about 15 times now and it always puts me in a quiet and peaceful mood (I am ~50 years old).

Best Brightman CD.......2007-02-07

A classical composition which showcases the beautiful voice of Sarah Brightman. A timeless CD which will continue to be a favourite over the years.

Sarah Brightman is a Classic.......2007-01-02

Sarah Brightman is at her best in "Classics." From Dvorak's "Rusalka" (Opera B.203) to Beethoven's haunting Op 52, slow movement (Symphony #7), Brightman's voice and lyrical style are a joy. I particularly enjoy her performances of Schubert's Ave Maria and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Pie Jesu. This is a great add to my collection of serious music.

Not The Best - Not the Worst - From Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-30

After purchasing this CD for my iPod for iTunes, I must say that I'm a little bit dissapointed. 7 new recordings and 8 old ones, ones that I already happen to have. I do like the fact that they're all on one CD! Some of her new recordings, including, "Ave Maria", "Winter Light", "Alhambra", "Dans La Nuit", and the new recording of "Pie Jesu" are just too breathy for my taste. It seems as with every changing CD, Sarah's voice changes. I'm not saying that the result is bad; it actually gives the songs more of a dream like quality, but I'm used to the younger, more Andrew Lloyd-Webber integrated Sarah. Scooping continually occurs in new recordings of "O Mio Babbino Caro", and "Nessun Dorma". In some tracks from La Luna, like "Figlio Perduto", Sarah's voice is TOTALLY dominated by harmonizing recordings that sound almost mechanical.

OVERALLY - The new songs sound O.K. and the old recordings are just as good as they were back then. This album is still a great buy!

Nice Cover.......2006-12-27

I'm a heterosexual guy who's not an opera aficionado - I only mention these facts because I seem to be right in the bull's-eye of the target market for this product. Sarah B. has a nice voice and she's pretty. Both of these are featured prominently on this CD. The cover and several pages in the insert are devoted to what must have been a very long and expensive photo shoot (and Photoshop) of a semi-clad Sarah looking marvelous. (The CD also comes with a flyer so you can buy various Brightman "Classics" apparel - perhaps not for the heterosexual male).

As far as the music goes: not bad, not great. I don't claim to have the most discerning ears for this sort of music, but everything was OK by me. However, the pieces on the CD with which I'm somewhat familiar, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro," didn't sound quite as good as other versions I've heard (and that includes by Charlotte Church, not just opera stars). Also, the solo version of "Time to Say Goodbye" didn't sound nearly as good to me as the duet with Bocelli.

In sum, there were 3-4 songs I liked enough to rip to MP3s - which is enough so that I didn't feel ripped myself...

All my favorites. I can start the CD player, which is wired to speakers in every room of my house, and just let it play, along with "The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the World" and "The Most Relaxing Classical Guitar in the World." I enjoy an awareness of familiar and beautiful strains of my favorites all day long and never get tired of it.

My brother visited me recently and noticed it right away. That will be another order for this fabulour music.

I was not really a classical music fan but I am now. I purchased this cd for my 14 year old grand-daughter, not knowing we would both enjoy the music so much. She has always enjoyed classical music along with all of the other teen music, rap, rock, country, etc.
Also, it really helped being able to listen to parts of the music before purchasing.

I first developed a taste for this music a number of years ago when my daughter started playing in the orchestra. The reason I made this purchase however, was because I have a great deal of difficulty with anxiety and I was looking for ways to find help. I love these CDs. Long ago in californialand, i heard the last everly brothers "hit", on the wings of a nightingale, 1 time and i knew I HAD to have it. Took me about 20 years to find it, in this album. If you really like good music, with tight harmonies, good guitar work, words you can understand, a little bit of country and early rock to the still bitchin, fresh,updated sound of nightingale, then STOP RIGHT HERE and get this album. Enough said!

Everly Brothers, best of.......2007-01-09

The Millennium collection seems to have the songs I always want from a group or artist. The quality of the sound is there everytime. As the local music stores disappear it is good to be able to trust a system like this as I replace much of my vinyl for a CD collection. This CD gives me what I want for the Everly Brothers in one purchase.

The Best.......2004-04-01

Any fan who appreciates the Everly Brothers has to have
this album. The remastered sound is superb of course, but
the deciding factor on this one should be the inclusion

Excellent effort!.......2007-06-30

I became aware of the Rippingtons when I was traveling to Las Vegas on an audit assignment in 1992. The jazz station there played "Welcome to the St. James Club" on their morning show, and I actually called the radio station from my hotel (something I had never done in 35 years of listening to music). Since then I've stayed a Ripps fan through the band's various player changes and moves (LA to Rocky Mountains to Miami). The new album takes a look back with new music--the percussion on "Six Four" is reminiscent of "Kilimanjaro"--and the group continues to expand its appeal with its music. The compilation track is amazing, and brings together many of the musicians that developed the Rippingtons' sound when the band first began. The companion DVD helps broaden understanding of the various changes the group has undertaken over the years, and includes one of the cuts from the "Live in LA" VHS recording. Altogether another top-notch project. A must-have.

Although this CD doesn't break any new ground, it's still a pleasure to listen to this new compilation.

On the opener, Russ Freeman takes a more central role on guitar. However, the relentlessly honking horn section is right there with him. It has more of a "classic Rippingtons" feel than the faux-Santana tripe Russ has been peddling in recent years, but it's not all that memorable. "Celebrate" sounds like theme music for a bland daytime talk show...SASSY! (Probably not what Russ intended). "Costa Del Sol" is a Fourplay ripoff. Plain and simple. If I were Nathan East, I'd be phoning my attorney right now. "Bingo Jingo" is the second nod toward "classic Rippertons." Not bad...not the cure for cancer, but not bad. "Eternity" is a somnambulistic Flamenco number. "Six Four"...goes nowhere. "Rainbow"...everyone takes a solo, but so what? "Twenty"...NOTE TO RUSS FREEMAN: MORE tracks like this. This kind of song is what keeps the Ripps fans coming back. Buy this track on iTunes if you can. "Anything"...imagine the worst song Marvin Gaye ever recorded, with the Rippingtons as his backup band. "A Kiss Under The Moonlight"...pretty, nice. Another classic track. "20th Anniversary Bonus"...featuring a flaccid "I'll Be There." 2 excellent, solid tracks in a sea of dreck...which has become Russ Freeman's par for the course. What a shame.

Re-sounding........2007-01-21

Russ Freeman's Smooth Jazz iconic group celebrate 20 years recording with this archetypal Rippingtons album.
Having followed Russ Freeman & his Rippingtons since the beginning, I must admit that I miss the 'good old days'.
This band practically invented the smooth jazz genre but after some stunning albums, they ran out of steam and their brilliant signature texturing and soudscaping with the album "Sahara".
More albums followed but they all lacked memorable and significant catchy melodies.
Now they're back and in radiant shape. At last !!
Kicking the CD off with "City Of Angels", memories are brought back - especially the final guitar/sax chase in the end resembles the former hit "Dreams of the Sirens".
The mix of smooth grooves, Jazz, R'n'B and West Coast rock remains with cuts like 'Costa Del Sol' and 'Bingo Jingo'.
A host of luminaries such as David Benoit on acoustic piano, Dave Koz, Kirk Whalum, Brandon Fields and Paul Taylor on saxes, Steve Reid on percussion, Tony Morales on drums, Greg Karukas on keyboards join in and bring their distinctive wails to Russ' compositions on this commemorative set.
Standout is the Soul cut 'Anything' that features Brian McKnight in fine fettle, but it's Freeman classical guitar that remains the main draw.
I have been playing it continously for a week now.
I am never tired of it.
This is a must have cd if you're a dedicated Rippingtons' fan.

I love this CD and wish I could listen to it more, but my husband always has it in his car! Great music. The Rippingtons have put a collection and a collage af their greatest hits and it is fabulous.

Latter-day also-rans.......2007-05-28

There will always be arguments for this or that singer, but this title is absurd. I didn't see a single Jussi Bjoerling, George London, Leonard Warren, or Zinka Milanov, and only one mention of Del Monaco. These were singers. Bjoerling and London were in a class by themselves. I saw all of these folks live on stage. London and Del Monaco had stage presence you don't get now. Di Stefano, Kirsten, de los Angeles should be on any best list. Play any tenor aria by any tenor; then play Bjoerling's. Play any bass/baritone aria by any singer; then play London's. Jussi and George will knock your socks off. They sang everything in every language. Tebaldi and Pavarotti sang only Italian, much easier.

A well-sung compilation.......2003-09-15

Compilations usually receive negative feedback from experienced opera listeners. However, this compilation by no means should be only welcomed by opera listeners, it should be welcomed by all music listeners. This CD is a great one to own for a first time opera listener. Also, for the person who wants to listen to opera once in a while and who does not want to buy a myriad of CD's in order to have the same amount of arias as this CD has. Eighty-percent of the singers are high-quality singers in this CD and the orchestras along with their respective conductors, do justice to the songs. All of the arias in this CD are what we in the field call, standard repertoire, and therefore are a good source for a beginning musician to help him or her listen to phrasing, colour, dynamics, language etc. I certainly recommend it, without a doubt.

This cant be the best.......2003-04-20

Elisa from Italy is absolutely right--well, the present generation may not be able to listen the golden oldies and the grand masters in person but it is still true that the past masters far surpassed the new. De Stefano had a magnetic voice, but listen to Gigli singing Puccini's La boheme and you will melt away, though it is v v v difficult to get hold of his mono recordings, even in CD. I disagree with Elisa only on one point: Tebaldi is good, but Victoria de Los angeles' Mimi is better. And the indulgent Thomas Beecham is my favourite conductor of this opera, way ahead of Toscannini, but De Stefano's Boheme is worth keeping and listening to again and again....

True opera lovers (I won't say "experts" 'cos I dislike the word) cannot possibly like this ... ! Apart from Callas, here there is none of the greatest artists! Callas may be great in Carmen but nobody can beat RENATA TEBALDI and her angel-like voice in all of Puccini's operas or in GIORDANO's Andrea Chénier. No Carreras can beat MARIO DEL MONACO in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, or Verdi's Otello. And finally, NO ALAGNA, or PAVAROTTI, or LICITRA, or whatever CHEAP TENOR or CROOK can ever beat the greatest tenor of all times: GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Come on! You can't like crook Pavarotti once you have heard Giuseppe Di Stefano!! You can't like ... connductor Riccardo Muti if you have listened to Arturo Toscanini!!
True opera lovers, especially lovers of Puccini, go for the Immortal, the Sublime, the Beautiful in opera: GO FOR GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Go hear his performance of "E lucevan le stelle" as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "Tosca" or "Che Gelida manina" always as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "La Boéme" and you'll know what I mean.

Even if you Hate Complilations, Get This One.......2002-06-21

This is a marvelous collection of better known arias and duets in Opera. The singers are those famous for setting, and raising, the bar in their field and for their times: Renata Scotto, Maria Callas, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti. If you are only somewhat familiar with opera, these recordings give you the highest feeling of what an aria or duet can sound like when sung and interpreted at its best. If you are already familiar with these songs, then you will appreciate this collection all the more for having gathered them in one place. I play both discs all the time. I've especially appreciated being able to compare vocal qualities side by side, so to speak, as Maria Callas can be heard next to Mirella Freni and Victoria de los Angeles. Even if you are not familiar with these singers, this is the way to meet them. Maria Callas has a much darker, back of the throat tone. Mirella Freni is pure, clear and light floating up in the higher notes. You can almost visualize the singers as they place the notes in their throats and set them out in the air to vibrate.

The music of Jobim forever supplies us with the soundtrack to our passions..........2007-06-09

Antonio Carlos Jobim weaved a magic spell with his music the way few songwriters ever can; and he sang wonderfully as well. He truly invented Bossa Nova music in the late 1950s with João Gilberto; and for this he deserves to be in the history books forever for his fine contributions to the world of music.

The CD starts off with the smash hit "The Girl From Ipanema." Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto's wife, sings the part of the vocals that are English. Although some may say that Astrud "sang flat;" her voice imparted a sense of natural sensuality and honesty that few professional singers ever achieve. The Portuguese lyrics are also beautiful even if you don't understand precisely what they mean--this song is THAT good.

Another major early hit for Jobim follows; the song entitled "Desafinado (Off Key)" shines like gold. Jobim plays piano on "Desafinado (Off Key)" while both Astrud and João Gilberto sing to perfection. Stan Getz does a great saxophone solo on this classic track, too. In addition, "Só Danço Samba" continues the romantic, enchanting early '60s Bossa Nova flavor; Jobim is on guitar and again Stan Getz accompanies the rest of the crew with a flawless saxophone performance.

"Insensatez (How Insensitive)" features Astrud Gilberto once more as she sings the lyrics to this melancholy ballad. The Marty Paich Orchestra performs a very well done musical arrangement; and Jobim also plays guitar for this number.

"Amor Em Paz (Once I Loved);" Água De Beber" and "Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba)" provide us with three magical instrumental numbers. The sophistication of the musical arrangements showcase the genius of Jobim's music and artistry; and the Brazilian beat enchants you with its captivating beauty. I love those strings and the piano on "Samba De Uma Nota Só (One Note Samba)!" SMILE

"Wave" and "Tide" boast smooth as silk arrangements by Claus Ogerman and Eumir Deodato, respectively.

The CD track set ends fittingly with Jobim's "Passarim," a number from the late 1980s. The vocals on "Passarim" reflect great forethought and good judgment. In addition, the track set proceeds in chronological order; this illustrates the development of Jobim's artistry very well.

The liner notes include an essay about Jobim and his career by Steven Ivory; and you get the song credits and the years in which they were recorded. The artwork exceeds my expectations with good use of color and a great black and white picture of Jobim on the front cover.

I highly recommend this CD for Jobim fans and fans of Bossa Nova music everywhere. If you want to get acquainted with Jobim's work but you can only choose a single CD to buy you can't go wrong with this one.

Despite scoring only one sizable American hit ("Bang a Gong") during its lifespan, Marc Bolan's T. Rex was one of the most influential rock acts of the '70s. This 23-track, digitally remastered anthology moves from the band's original, late-'60s roots as Tyrannosaurus Rex to the acoustic neo-folk duo of Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took to its more familiar electrified early-'70s incarnation. While many of his U.K. peers were smitten with prog-rock excesses and album-length ruminations during that period, Bolan obsessed on the pop-single form, stripping his music down to the elemental rock hooks of "Ride a White Swan" and the minimalist cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues." Coupled with a glam-era sense of style, his was a pop sensibility that presaged much of the succeeding waves of punk and new wave, hard rock and glam metal. Indeed, "Metal Guru" and "Children of the Revolution" now sound like clarion calls. The Best Bolan Collection To Date.......2007-05-31

I've heard it said that the only other artist to have more official posthumous releases than Marc Bolan is Jimi Hendrix. Since Marc's death in 1977, there have been numerous greatest hits collections, outtake collections, live concerts, and album re-releases. And the quality of these releases has been as varied as the albums themselves due to sound quality and song selection. Almost all of the prior hits collections were limited to either 1967-1971 or 1972-1977. You got one or the other.

Finally, we have a collection that takes the best from all eras: Marc's hippy-acoustic Tyrannosaurus Rex days through the mega-hit pop machine, T. Rex. It appears someone finally resolved all the legal matters that prevented a full greatest hits release in the past, giving listeners a complete picture of the man and his music.

People looking for Bolan's signature songs will fine them here: "Ride A White Swan," "Hot Love," "Get It On (Bang A Gong)," "Children Of The Revolution," "20th Century Boy," and "I Love To Boogie."

Being an avid Bolan fan and collector, there's never going to be the perfect representation of T. Rex on disc. To me, almost ALL of Marc's music was phenomenal. The exception would be a few tracks off of "Bolan's Zip Gun." But this album manages to come the closest I've seen to give a complete picture, picking the hits and giving the listener the T. Rex experience.

Marc Bolan is one of the most underrated rock geniuses of all-time .
David Bowie's early recordings evince that David was unequivocally
influenced by Marc Bolan ."Hot Love","Raw Ramp","Bang a gong","Jeepster",
and "Metal Guru" are five great songs included in this collection .Every
song on this CD is worth listening to.The album is a bargain ,since
you will get 23 songs for $12.99 if you buy it .Marc Bolan was a
fine poet and a fine musician .Great Britain lost a true pioneer
when Marc died .Marc is considered by many people as the progenitor
of glam rock ,and this CD is proof of that fact .

As with all greatest hits discs- you can only please some of the people some of the time, there will always be one or two songs left out that should have been included.

The main reason I bought the album was to update an old greatest hits disc- definitely worth it (even considering shipping and the exchange rate). The remastered disc sounds fantastic given the age of the material and the limitations of the cd format.

Though they've sadly fallen into the long, long list of underrated classic rock acts, Marc Bolan & T. Rex were the most influential band of the glam rock movement of the early 1970s', and though they're not as inherently popular as they were thrity years ago, their music does live on.

Lead by the legendary Marc Bolan, T. Rex created a string of early 1970s' rock classics, including "Ride A White Swan", "Hot Love", "Raw Ramp", "Cosmic Dancer", "Metal Guru", "Children Of The Revolution", "Born To Boogie" and the all time classsics "Bang A Gang (Get It On)" and "20th Century Boy".

"2oth Century Boy: The Ultimate Collection" contains all of those tracks as several other recrdings dating back to their earliest recording as Tyrannosaurus Rex from 1968. All of these songs have been digitially remastered, and they sound excellent. The liner notes by Dave Thompson make for an interesting read, and the price and packaging are also first rate. This is definitely a must have collection

I'm a new fan to Andre Rieu. I didn't start getting into his music until I caught his Christmas special on my local PBS station last year. I found his performances highly energetic and playful which is rare in this often serious musical genre. After catching a repeat performance of "Tuscany", I decided to make the cd version my next Andre Rieu purchase. Whenever I listen to "Tuscany", I can easily see Andre Rieu performing with his orchestra. His skills as a violinist is exquisite. He is very subtle and is never out of tune. "Tuscany" begins with three of the most beautiful classical numbers I have ever heard. The beautiful orchestral melodies puts me at ease. I wished that the cd included "The Rose" (the Bette Midler tune) that can be seen on the dvd. I loved the operatic version. It would have been a nice addition to the cd. Of all the operatic numbers my favorite has to be "Ode to Joy". I have to admit though the singers have a terrible tendency to caterwaul on the songs which can be quite disconcerting for these ears. On the other hand the same can be said about a lot of opera singers as well as modern pop singers. There wasn't a single song on the cd that I didn't enjoy listening to. Andre Rieu's love for music really does shine through his music here. I hope some day I will have the opportunity to see him perform live. I don't think nothing can compare to seeing this talented artist live. Until then his cds will do nicely.

What wouldn't I give to have been enjoying this magnificent program in that beautiful square in Italy? Fantastic performance of unbelievabe quality and program choices. I wouldn't trade this DVD for anything.

Haunting melodies taking you to the hills of Tuscany where this concert was originally held. Plays well while travelling as well as at home.

I'm an Andre Rieu fan and can definitely review this CD as one of his best! It was well-recorded with good sound quality, and you can hear the excitement of that evening in Tuscany as you listen to this CD. I would also recommend the DVD/Video of that performance.

If You Do Not Want To Buy All Of Their Albums, This Is the Shortest Path Of Resistance. This CD Contains All Of Their Best And It Is Indeed A Good Collection. The Masters Collection Has Turned Out Some Very High Quality CDs. I Have Several Other Artists In This Collection. None Of Them Are Disappointments! Go Ahead Try The Sample Bars Above. Good Music. AAA+++

An Underrated Band At Their Best........2006-12-28

I always enjoyed Pablo Cruise, but rarely hear them on the radio anymore. this is an excellent collection of their music.

The one drawback: I only knew of three Pablo Cruise songs: "Love Will Find A Way," "Whatcha Gonna Do?", and my personal favorite, "A Place In The Sun." Those also happen to be the first three selections on the project. I would have spread them out a little, to try to keep interest.

The production of these songs are the greatest starting with great drums sounds. The musicanship & writting are great. The only problum is they did not include Worlds Away on the Greatest hits Cd. This song was used on Monday night football & is a great track. Someone tell me why.

It captures the best.......2004-02-16

I have been a real long time fan of this band.I can remember these guys when I was a medic at letterman Hospital in the early seventies.These guys were real people. not rock stars. I went to so many shows all over to here this band now I can hear Ocean Breeze.Bud had a great voice. David really could cut loose.Steve price kiked but on the rythym stuff. Corey well what can I say other than Great Keys. These guys had a magic that is hard to describe.Time has done its thing thats why we have not heard anything in years from such a great group. This CD is about the best of the best.Until some old live stuff comes out to capture what this highly underated band could or can do we have to settle for this.This CD is done well and is worth every penny.
