5 out of 5 stars Mr. Should Have Been Big.......2006-01-03

The band Mr. Big is full of some very talented musicians. Paul Gilbert of Racer X fame is one of the greatest (and fastest) guitar players of all time. Billy Sheehan, is considered the greatest bass player ever. The vocalist, Eric Martin, is a huge rock star in Japan. This album is full of 80s rock with amazing solos, cathcy lyrics, and power drills. Fans of Firehouse and Extreme will enjoy this excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Mr. Big.......2005-09-04

I would never picture how good this one sounds before I bought it. No crappy song in this CD, if you're a classic 90' rock digger.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect hard rock album.......2005-03-04

This is the perfect hard rock album. Seriously. There's something for everyone on this CD: love ballads that can be either depressing (Just Take My Heart) or hopeful (To Be With You); rock songs with pop influences (CDFF-Lucky This Time, Green-Tinted Sixties Mind); full-force hard rock tunes (Daddy, Brother, Lover...) - some of which have a bluesy edge to them (Alive and Kickin').

I'm going to comment on some of my favorite songs on the album:

Alive and Kickin' - this is probably my favorite song on the album. It's got a bluesy drive, although the emphasis is clearly on hard rock. It starts out with a short bluesy guitar solo that sets the tone for the song, and quickly progresses into the main riff, which remains dominant thru-out the majority of the song. In other words, this song keeps it simple and to the point.

CDFF-Lucky This Time - I am a big hard rock fan, so I will love anything that... rocks hard. This song mixes pop and rock very well - it reminds me a lot of Bon Jovi. Great vocal work by Eric Martin.

My Kinda Woman - guitarist Paul Gilbert originally wrote this riff for his rock / metal band, Racer X, but he let Mr. Big record it first. The song has a chugging riff that carries it along smoothly, and has a seemingly somber tone. The original title for this song (when it was written for Racer X) was Mad at the World, so that explains its musical mood.

Just Take My Heart - this song is about a relationship break-up. "Just take my heart when you go, I don't have a need for it anymore." As the lyrics suggest, the song has a sad tone, but it is captivating enough to hold your attention. As with Alive and Kickin', the tune starts with a guitar intro that sets the tone for the song and stays consistent to the end.

These are the songs that I feel best represent the album as a whole. An honerable mention goes to Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy. This song stays fast from top to bottom, and features Paul Gilbert on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass playing their instruments in harmony with electric drills. You can't miss it.

4 out of 5 stars GUITAR LICKS for CHICKS.......2003-12-13

If you took away the hair and the posturing, Mr. Big would still be left with great instrumental and vocal skills. Their ability to write memorable pop/rock tunes is an added bonus. Due to that ability, this CD has probably managed to find it's way into the homes of the teenaged girls and the guitar freaks...WOW!

Bottom line for this album is great playing and singing coupled with some fairly strong songs.

Enjoy

3 out of 5 stars This one will do.......2003-02-10

If you have decided to get only one Mr. Big album (which is in fact a good decision since one is enough), this is the one to get.

It's decent hard rock typical for the time of its release. Many people seem to think Eric Martin is a great singer, well I don't... I even think he has a tendency to be boring in the long run and after hearing more than one Mr. Big album in a row you might even begin to hate the guy's voice... At least I tend to do!

3 out of 5 stars It builds from here........2006-11-06

Looking over the other reviews caused me to think something is missing from the perspective. All the reviewers have different expectations from what I had when I first heard it. Supposedly the Mr.Big foursome were all hard rock demigods, but as a kid I had never heard of Racer X or David Lee Roth--I didn't know who Mr.Big was either! I've learned since then, but my first impression remains. My first impression was their album "Lean Into It."

If that sounds like you too, listen up.

I went back for this album after "Lean Into It" and "Bump Ahead." I couldn't get enough Mr.Big. You might say I was "Addicted to that Rush," and couldn't wait for the next one to come out, so I went in reverse. If you're thinking about buying this now, you're looking at this CD the same way I was.

The meat of this album is in the middle. 3-4-5-6 are what you've come to expect from Mr.Big. Merciless (the hot girl.) Had Enough (end of the line ballad--Eric is amazing!) Blame It... (devilmaycare rock&roll) Take a Walk (signature funky punch--awesome rhythm!)

Other than that, the leadoff song is a GREAT start...so aptly named for kicking off the Mr.Big career. #9 is very Eric Martenesque...an almost too slow ballad, but still hangs in there on a lonely night. Honestly, as much as I love this band, you can flush the rest of the CD.

If you're a fan, stop reading this review and buy the CD--this is not a debate when it costs less than $10!!! Otherwise, do what I did: start with the "train" and the "stoplight." If you're addicted then, come back for this one. You'll appreciate it more after you've acquired the taste.

4 out of 5 stars Great talent, good songs by Mr. Big.......2003-11-15

Mr. Big is a metal band that had the perfect recipe for success, rather than mere failure. Made up of 4 great musicians including vocalist Eric Martin, bassist Billy Sheehan, and axe master Paul Gilbert, this hair band never got quite as "big" as their name. It's a mystery why, because once you hear their songs, you'll think the same thing.

This album consists of some great songs including "Had Enough", a slow rocker with great musicianship overall. The ballad "Anything For You" targets your soul with the right blend of everything. And arguably the best track on this album "How Can You Do What You Do" is a heavy hitter with a great beat, and very similar to their other great song "Shadows" (not on this album). Mr. Big is all about magnificent guitar work, beat, bass, and of course incredible singing from E. Martin, which comes together to form a great array of songs in all their sets.

Mr Big is worth a listen. If you like bands such as Ratt, Def Leppard, Motley Crue etc. You'll love Mr Big.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't really care for it.......2003-11-10

Sorry, I didn't see what the big deal is. Seems sort of dated and second rate. Just personal preference - you may like it & that's ok.

5 out of 5 stars this is it.......2003-06-13

in '89 these guys came out with all guns blazing.a minimal of ballads(2)more chops here than a butcher shop.check out the out solo on "rock and roll over".the last great 80's band.after this they put out too many ballads.the talent here is undeniable.billy sheehan is from david lee roth's band and talas and whatever planet he comes from, they all play bass there.paul gilbert is probably the most underrated guitarists around and played in racer x.

4 out of 5 stars Big enough..........2000-04-18

The expectations were great when the four superstars comprising this group united for their first album, yet they've failed to disappoint, creating something extremely musical, sounding big,a la Van Halen, even striking the right balance between virtuosity and accessibility, without sacrificing either. This first Mr.Big album is probably the heaviest of them all, leaving the listener thirsty for more.

Album Description

Mr. Big was a hard rock group from San Francisco featuring bassist Billy Sheehan & lead vocalist Eric Martin. they have issued numerous successful albums through the 1990's. One album that was only issued as a hard-to-find Japanese import is "Actual Size". It was recorded in 2001.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This album rocks.......2006-12-29

This album is straight ahead hard, sorta pop rock. Yes, a standard run of the mill review, but it's Eric Martin's unique voice that will grab you. Newer guitarist Richie Kotzen is surprisingly good. Definitely their best since 1993's Bump Ahead (BA would have been better with a better mix). Richie Zito (The Cult) probably had a lot to do with this album being well produced.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of songs from the underrated Mr. Big.......2005-03-24

Mr. Big is rock and pop at it's finest. This "Greatest Hits" package covers their best songs and all of those that made it to the FM airwaves. Why Mr. Big never hit the main-stream remains a mystery to me. Perhaps that is part of their appeal - Mr. Big was never overplayed - thus you never got tired of them or a particular song of theirs. Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (original guitarist), Ritchie Kotzen (replacement guitarist), Billy Sheehan (bass), and Pat Torpey (drums)... these guys are all master craftsman with their instruments. Might I also add that Sheehan is a modern day God with the bass guitar. The band enjoyed some scattered hits (never a top 10 hit tho) and some moderate airplay on the hard rock FM airwaves. 16 tracks here with half of these tracks coming from their first two releases. Mr. Big's debut (1989) was raw and filled with energy - the opening cut, "Addicted To That Rush", is still one of my favorite rockers. Their 2nd release from 1991 ("Lean Into It") is easily their successful best and most complete album. 5 songs are taken from "Lean Into it" here including "Green Tinted Sixties Mind", "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy" and "Alive & Kickin'". "Bump Ahead" (1993) is probably their 3rd best album - with 3 songs featured here including the rocking in-yer-face "Colorado Bulldog". Only gripes with this "Greatest Hits" is that they included the sad remake of Cat Stevens' "Wild World", and a few personal favorites that are missing ("Electrified", "Rock & Roll", "Trapped In Toyland", "Lost In America", "Static"). Mr. Big started out much stronger and heavier in the early years of their career and then tailed off toward more radio friendly rock and power ballads. Overall a great package from Rhino from a sadly underrated rock band. If you own nothing from Mr. Big, this "Greatest Hits" package is a great place start... or with their best studio release "Lean Into It".

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Album.......2005-11-28

Regardless of whether or not you like the Killers, this CD is pretty good. I love classical music, and this CD is not a disappointment.

The songs are a little shorter than the originals, but still manage to be pretty good. It's amazing what they've done with just a few classic instruments and no synthesizer. The mood of the songs are a little different from the album, it's not so much "night" music, as it is... classic. You can picture yourself eating in a brightly lit, fancy French cafe with this music in the background, rather than being at a club or on the streets at night.

The only problem is that the music lacks a certain amount of energy, which was present on the original album.

I would still reccomend this CD to anyone who likes classical music and the Killers.

5 out of 5 stars This is Great!.......2005-06-14

If you like The Killers this Cd rocks! I love the Hot Fuss Cd and this one is just as good. I highly recommend this Cd for all Killer fans!

3 out of 5 stars The Killers have a tribute album...already?.......2005-04-26

Okay, "Hot Fuss" came out about 10 months ago and now The Killers are one of the most popular bands of the 'indie' genre. Is it too soon for The String Quartet to turn songs like "Mr. Brightside" and "Somebody Told Me" into Muzak pieces? The answer is yes but...they did a pretty good job of it. I am not recommending this cd unless you love The Killers AND you don't mind listening to the songs turned around 180 degrees into 'chamber music'. Try to preview it first.

5 out of 5 stars Jean Knight's first and only Stax album--full of soul!!!.......2007-05-29

Jean Knight's album, "Mr. Big Stuff" came out in 1971. The hit single of the same name came out in that year, as well. The main track is full of soul. From what I learned, the single of this song was one of the biggest selling hits ever to be released by Stax Records. There are some other great songs on this album, as well. "You City Slicker" is another great one; the lyrics for it are very similar to the main song. The same thing applies to "You Think You're Hot Stuff," which is the last song on the album (one of the bonus tracks). This latter song (which was a follow-up sequel to Mr. Big Stuff) was also released as a single later on in 1971, but as sequels go, this one was not as successful as the main song, and was in the low ranks on the music charts. The rest of the other bonus tracks are somewhat okay, but not worth listening to very much. Another song that I like on this album is "Why I Keep Living These Memories". This song has somewhat of a sad sound and lyric to it, where Jean sings about a woman who must face the reality that the man she loves won't come back to her and she has to deal with the memories of the relationship as well as the situation. Here is a bit of trivia for you folks (that may not have known this): "Why I Keep Living These Memories" was released as the flip side to Mr. Big Stuff. After the smash single of Mr. Big Stuff was released, Jean released several more singles (including the sequel, "You Think You're Hot Stuff"), but could not seem to match the success of the main song. Even though this album and single of the same name are the only Stax titles that she had released with the label, it is still quite a joy to listen to, as well as a lot of fun. Mr. Big Stuff, in my opinion, will always be Jean's signature song that will never tire out.

4 out of 5 stars Good Disc.......2000-04-01

Jean Knight sounds Good on this set&the Band is Cooking. She was More than just a Hit or what not.She has Soul in her Pipes.

4 out of 5 stars a very solid album.......2000-03-27

God forbid that I should disagree with a critic, but the review above is all wet! While it's true that there are several songs that sound similar to Mr. Big Stuff, how many John Fogerty songs sound similar? If you've found a classic sound and groove, what's wrong with exploring it?

For my money, it's the musicianship and production that keep me coming back to this album. The rhythm section is as good as any I've ever heard, with a simple funkyness that keeps your foot tapping. If you like 60s soul/R&B, give this album a chance; you'll find it to be a pleasure that you'll want to repeat time after time.

4 out of 5 stars Big Stuff indeed. We know who we think we are........2000-03-18

We love this song, and what better way to enjoy it than with an album including 11 slightly different versions of it. That sounds insulting; people will never buy it! But you should buy it anyway.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This was heck a show, and the CD is as close as we can get to it!.......2006-02-20

We went to Shirley M.'s live show about 20 years ago and tremendously enjoyed ourselves. Around then we purchased the disk that we played numerous times. With the change from longplay discs to CD's the disc ended up where they all do..in a box in the garage... Now the CD came out, I bought it and since played it 50 times...great show, great songs, great atmoshphere..

5 out of 5 stars Steel Shirley.......2004-09-24

I encourage any fans of live performance artists and entertainers alike to add to this to your collection. Since seeing Shirley live these days is a rarity; this might be the closest we can get. Her stirring renditions of, "If My Friends Could See Me Now," & "She's a Star," get you going and you will be humming and singing them to yourself for a week! Shirley is an often forgotten "triple threat!" But she pulls out her triple threats and treats you to a unique trip into Shirley's world of song, dance, and acting. I also hope that DRG Records is able to put together a release of this show on DVD/VHS format or another of Shirley's live shows. I hope many people buy the live CD sending the message that Shirley is loved and that we want more! Shirley proves she is a seasoned pro and before she became a Steel Magnolia she proved her talent and grit on stage was solid as steel as well! Enjoy Shirley Maclaine Live At the Palace!

4 out of 5 stars a great recording from a great star.......2003-02-08

This new reissue of Shirley MacLaine's album 'Live at the Palace' is a fantastic testimony to Ms MacLaine's musical talents (which aren't lauded nearly as much as her acting talents).

Ms MacLaine mounted her own solo show at the Palace Theatre in 1976, resulting in this live recording. She sings most of her numbers from the film version of SWEET CHARITY (in which she memorably starred) including "My Personal Property", "I'm a Brass Band" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now". She also sings the title song from IRMA LA DOUCE (although the film version is devoid of any musical moments), and delivers a reminisce of her favorite acting role - in 'Some Came Running' - before sliding into a rendition of "I'm a Person Too".

Ms MacLaine also talks about subbing for Carol Haney in the Broadway production of THE PAJAMA GAME, which catapulted her to stardom. It's obvious that dear Shirley is having a marvellous time here. I urge Broadway fans to snap this up; this is yet another lovely reissue from the good folks at DRG.

5 out of 5 stars Shirley's Personality Shines.......2002-09-17

This album is a must for Shirley MacLaine fans! Her sparkling personality shines through each song she sings and each monologue she shares with the audience. One can only wish this dynamic performance was available on video. In my mind's eye I can almost see Shirley dancing as she performs at the Palace.

5 out of 5 stars Remember you? As if we ever forgot!.......2002-05-22

The prejudice against Shirley MacLaine's performance in the 1969 film of "Sweet Charity" has always mystified me. Okay, so she wasn't Gwen Verdon - who was? She contributed, in a scene of almost unwatchable pain and desperation, one of the most shattering moments in post-war cinema. She was charming, sweetly funny, vulnerable and heart-breakingly hopeful. She sang with humor, gusto, and intense, if delicate, emotion. And she danced the hell out of those great, knock-knee'd Bob Fosse numbers. If her Charity isn't the finest performance in a movie musical since Judy Garland and James Mason slashed the heart in "A Star is Born," I don't know what is. All of what Shirley MacLaine can do best is in that movie, and in this great 1976 live recording. Parts of the extravaganza may feel a bit overdone, a touch self-conscious (if not downright self-congratulatory), and the often effective Cy Coleman arrangements may occasionally border on aggressive showbiz-iness. But Shirley MacLaine's electric gifts shine through. If she hasn't got you by the time she gets through her passionate, whirl-wind rendition of "She's a Star," you're probably beyond gettin'. So, now that Shirl is finally on CD ... Decca - where's that "Sweet Charity" soundtrack?

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection....But...........2004-02-29

Why dish out for a "greatest hits" cd when you can pick up all their domestic releases in the cut-out bin for around a buck or two! My advice is to stick with the individual albums rather than this single disc compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Big is really BIG.......2001-04-30

In this album you'll find the milestone of Mr. Big. You can hear Mr. Big from the first album until Hey Man. Plus you'll find some great new songs from them.

5 out of 5 stars MR.BIG, The Biggest and Best of The Best.......2000-08-14

The best album because it has all the classics and some new sounds from the boys. I urge everyone who likes rock to buy this cd. It has every aspect of a great hard rock band, and shows you the variety of true rock. Paul Sings...WOW. He sings Unatural, he's got a great voice, but He could never outshine Eric.

4 out of 5 stars MR. BIG IS REAL BIGGGGGGG, MAN.......2000-06-27

welll, ithink this album is realllly awsome and really coooolll, man. i never get bore to listen to this album and i think this is the greatest mr. big's compilations ever. LONG LIVE MR.BIG

4 out of 5 stars Big cuts from Big albums..........2000-04-18

A standard collection of tunes from the previous four Mr.Big albums that completists might want to own. However the new tracks are not that essential.

This is a winner from Mr. Big.

Well recorded, at least the original import is.
This is a quality domestic label, as I have some of their others.

Good setlist.

Good versions of; Colorado Bulldog, Mr. Big, Wild World, To Be With You, Green Tinted Sixties Mind.

A couple of good studio tracks at the end included.

Killer chops.
