Their blues-influenced, grittier edge set Tesla apart from the bands that littered the hard rock landscape from the late '80s to the early '90s. The Great Radio Controversy is arguably their best album, with enough hooks to catch the listener, and good, solid songwriting. Songs like "Heaven's Trail (No Way Out)," "Flight to Nowhere," and "Party's Over" show that Tesla is at their best when tackling anthems; by avoiding the overblown riffs and musical posturing of their peers, they keep these songs from sounding pretentious. Likewise, "Love Song" lives up to its title, a straightforward ballad that doesn't drip with treacle the way most hard rock power ballads do. A solid effort all around, if somewhat dated. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
No sophomore slump here! .......2007-03-01
Five stars because it has stood the test of time; I still listen to it, and it was a near perfect follow up to Tesla's first release.
The production is way different from the Mechanical CD. Same engineers, just more $$$ to spend I'm sure, but it's more than that.
The rythym guitars are much more fuller sounding, the mix just a bit more sonically filled out.
This CD is one of the few from that "era" that still sits in my CD rack.
Buy It!
Great Album- Nothing More To It.......2006-08-31
I just bought this album a few days ago at Coconuts [it was the last one] and I have to tell you at first I didnt know if it could match the power of Mechanical Resonance but I think it is just as good or better. I'm overly pleased with it. After hearing how good this album is, it makes me want to get all their albums and by all the great reviews about Tesla I think I might. This record is great and and every song on here is worth a listen. If you want to here great rock instead of all the crap on the radio now, I highly recommend you getting this album the next time you leave the house!
A classic... say no more........2006-02-02
Still holds up almost 20 years later. This was one of the first CD's I bought back in 1989. Funny thing too, I was a fat lil kid, and I used this CD as my "workout" music. And I lost 60lbs in 6 months. No joke. But the music still holds up. They didn't need gimmicks like most of the bands back around then.
The Greatest - No Controversy!!.......2006-01-07
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!!
I remember at the time of it's release there seemed to be some thought that this album wasn't as strong as "Mechanical Resonance". Looking back at these first two albums now, whilst the songs on the debut were more immeadiate, it's "The Great Radio Controversy" which has really stood the test of time.
Standout tracks? "Hang Tough" is brooding, moody and powerful (still love the piano breakdown piece as well); "Heaven's Trail" was a mini anthem for me as a twenty something wannabe rock star; "The Way It Is" is a perfectly weighted upbeat ballad and need anymore be said about "Love Song"; the rest of the heavy rock fraternity should have just given up on power ballads after that.
I've often thought that it's a shame that Tesla get thrown in with the other 80's hair bands. They were always more than just part of the hair metal scene and with the possible exception of Cinderella, are the only band of that genre whose material has really stood the test of time.
Just do yourself a favour and buy this album!!!
Still holding up.......2005-09-09
Ohhhhhh man, I heard some new Tesla stuff a while ago. So I've really been getting into Tesla as of late. Just bought "The Great Radio Controversy" since it looks like their best. Oh man, so happy I did. AMAZING CD. Even now, it still holds up with some of the newer cd's. I'm 15, and LOVE this cd, non-sexually, but man it is great. It's almost impossible to find a CD that beats this one out, it's just that great. I'll do a track by track breakdown.
Hang Tough: One of the best Tesla songs EVER, imo. I love this. Everytime I hear the opening riff, I know what's coming next. Jeff Keith's raspy voice "Took a shot to the chin, looks like you just can't win, in this do or die situation..." Such an amazing track, worth half the price of the CD.
Lady Luck: Oh man, we all know how luck works. But how many of us sing about it? I constantly find myself singing to this song, despite not singing much. Jeff Keith can do that to you... just an amazing track. Not as good as other tracks, but it's up there.
Heavens Trail (No Way Out): Everyone talks about how great this song is and how it's the best. I wasn't impressed after listening the first time. Or the second. Or the third. Fourth time I noticed something... not sure what... but something. Fifth time I had to listen again. It really is that amazing. From the guitars, to the vocals... the chorus makes this song.
Be A Man: I'll be honest, I haven't listened to this much, just because I'm 99% sure I'll be biased against it. I don't think Jeff Keith can match up to Randy Savage. I'll always be partial to Randy's song "Be A Man."
Lazy Days, Crazy Nights: Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man. Great party song. This song always gets me in the mood to go out and hit the clubs. Sure I can't get into the clubs. But still, this song gets the place rocking. If you don't feel amped up after this song, I'll personally pay you $100.
Did It For The Money: I honestly don't get why people don't like this. This song is one of those songs that will get in your head, and just will not leave you alone. It's just in there. "MONEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!" Although considering this is one of my favorite tracks on the CD, I don't mind hearing it over and over. I'm sure you won't either.
Yesterdaze Gone: Honestly, this track doesn't stand out much to me. I've only had the CD for 2 days, so I'm sure that'll change soon. But for now, this is just an amazing song, that really doesn't have anything "Special." It's still better then anything out now though, so it's still a nice listen. But it's hard to know when it comes on.
Making Magic: Same deal as Yesterdaze Gone.
The Way It Is: Oh man. This song just ended. Such an AMAZING song! Jeff Keith lays down the law in this, and you listen. The lyrics are just, the kind of stuff you want to say. This chorus really just hooks you. Getting to the chorus, it sounds like another generic Tesla song, but the chorus sets it apart.
Flight To Nowhere: Another great song. Really not much to say about it, but it's amazing. Every Tesla song is amazing. It's just about standing out. This song will amp you up though, not like "Lazy Days, Crazy Nights" but it'll still get the blood flowing. Like all good music should.
Love Song: Tesla's biggest hit. No where near as good as "Did It For The Money" Or "Lady Luck" or "Hang Tough" or even their early stuff in "Modern Day Cowboy" but it's Tesla. Can't be bad. It starts out somewhat soft. Not Barry White like, but a very noticable change of pace. A very much needed change of pace. The end really picks up though, and that's where the song gets it.
Paradise: PARADISE! When listening to this song, you'll feel like you're in paradise. Amazing vocals, lyrics, and guitars. Like normal. It's expected from Tesla.
Party's Over: A great ending track. I love this song. It's just put together so well. No flaws in it. No complaints. Jeff Keith and crew really pull out the stops to make this an awesome cd ender, to get you to buy their next cd.
Overall, this cd is around $10. How can you pass up? One of the best CD's of all time. If "Modern Day Cowboy" was on this CD, I swear this would be the BEST CD EVER. There's no question about it. But it's not, so this is just an amazing cd. You don't find stuff like this anymore. Certainly something any rock fan needs. The alternative for the main stream crap they call rock, like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and that other junk. If you buy this, and don't like it, I don't know what's wrong with you. You might need your head checked.

Written, produced, arranged, and performed by that little old funkmaster, Controversy hit stores in 1981 and still rocks 17 years later. As the title suggests, the subject matter Prince tackles here was meant to spark discussion. From the nasty anthems "Sexuality" and "Do Me Baby", to the slice of '80s political commentary "Ronnie Talk to Russia" and "Annie Christian," Prince does just that. Oh, and he doesn't forget about the booty either, making this the ultimate agit-prop, sex-you-up soundtrack. --Amy Linden
Customer Reviews:
Controversy is the key.......2007-07-09
All that needs to be said here is it's classic Prince. What more do you need?
Outstanding!.......2007-05-09
As an old school Prince fan from back in the day, I bought this "album" in vinyl form back in 1981. As any true Prince fan knows, there was a real treat inside the album cover! A full-size poster of Prince in the shower, leg warmers and all. I've been hooked ever since. I mean, what else can you say about him? He is a true Prince.
My favorites: Controversy, Do Me, Private Joy and Jack U Off. At the time, I had no idea what that meant, all I knew was I liked it and I liked him and I still do. Love you babe!
Controversy made 1999 the hit that it was.......2007-01-31
More times than not it is the disc before the big hit disc that is responsible for an artist hitting it big. Controversy is that disc. The first two Prince discs were unremarkable except for showing us the talent of what was to come. Dirty Mind was great and set the tone for future releases but very few took notice. Controversy was the snowball that became the 1999 avalanche. When Controversy came out a few more took notice, but in this case it just kept going. This was a classic case of word of mouth not letting a disc out of site. This album would not go away and that by the time 1999 came out Prince had a huge following because of Controversy. While 1999 is undeniably great Controversy may be his best. If you picked up Prince with 1999 then do yourself a favor and pick up Controversy, the disc that REALLY started it all for Prince.
Controversy.......2006-12-22
Awesome CD!!!!
I purchased this CD because I wanted a digital copy of the album that I own. This is one of the best albums Prince has written. The name does say it all. Go ahead and buy this CD, you won't be sorry that you did.
Another classic album from Prince.......2006-09-03
Prince's 1981 album CONTROVERSY is another classic album in his catalog. The title track is the standout immediately. This longer version than the single version features a prayer. The song is funky and effective. "Sexuality" is a great disco/funk number. "Do Me, Baby" is probably one of the sexiest songs he's ever done. This full length version is the one to hear. "Private Joy" is another funky song which is another favorite on the album. "Ronnie, Talk To Russia" is a short protest kind of song. Same goes for "Annie Christian", which he wrote about the shooting of John Lennon, Ronald Reagan, various Atlanta child murders. Not as effective as "Ronnie, Talk To Russia" but a decent track nonetheless. Overall a highlight in Prince's career.

Not Bad At All.......2007-01-05
The Audition looks to be a promising band in the pop/pop-punk/alternative genres. This album has a solid track selection from start to finish. The first song starts things off high-energy and sets the tone for the rest of the album. Instrumentally things aren't too complex, but they've got a good amount of variety for the most part as far as rhythms and melodies go.
The lyrics aren't cheesy, which is a total plus for me personally, because while it's hard to say which direction the band will go in, should they choose the pop-punk route it'll be refreshing not to hear the same predictable lyrics over and over again. However, if the first five tracks are any indication it'll be a more alternative road, which seems something The Audition is good at.
Rock ON!.......2006-11-08
Killer "new" rock style CD that will keep you wanting more. Driving riffs, catchy tunes. The whole album totally ROCKS! No sleepy tunes here. This is not for winps! I love it!
The Audition ~Controversy Loves Company~.......2006-07-30
Finally, a pop-punk band that released an entire disc worth of great material aside from one or two singles and three or four other solid tracks. The Audition have put together what I would call a masterpiece of pop-punk if I were prone to using that word to describe pop-punk albums. This disc is so hook filled and sing-along friendly that it's hard to not move your body and bop your head while the songs play.
While not sounding exactly like Fall Out Boy, the resemblance is obvious. You will probably like this band if you like Fall Out Boy but I wont guarantee that you will like Fall Out Boy if you like The Audition. The Audition isn't quite as aggressive and fall more in the rock genre then the punk genre of their pop-punk mentality, but there's not a damn thing wrong with that!

WOW!.......2006-07-14
SO, I'm not a kid. I'm actually 17, but I never spend time on amazon, so you get the point. Anyway, I really hate most new music these days. It all sounds the same. Nobody ever catches my attention anymore, and of all the so-called "AmAzInG" bands that rule the scene, 90% of them don't impress me. ANYWAY, I really REALLY liked "controversy loves company" by the audition. I wouldn't have even known about this band had it not been for a friend, and now, I'm telling everyone I know! The last modern CD I ever actually got the urge to buy was Green Day's "warning", and that was like 5 years ago! Trust me, the audition are worth knowing about. Even if you hate most new music, "controversy loves company" is a must have. You'll be playing it until the plastic chips, and that's no lie!

Good album but cmon Paid in full..........2006-01-01
I liked the album. In fact I bought this thinking it was the same stuff that was supposed to come out in 2002 after "GYMC". Little did I know that it was lego'd by Mista madd and cat themselves. They are still trying to make money off of artists that aren't even on their label anymore. I mean cmon gimme a break. All that aside, I like the cuts that Chamill did, or the cuts they pieced off him. How ever "fake" this album may be, it still had alot of fire from Chamill's verses.
Paid N Partial is Pasting in Partial.......2005-11-30
1 word, BOOTLEG. yea no doubt it is 100% koopa and paul wall but koopa didn't get paid for this album paid in partial still had songs that were koopa's before he left and put em out and pasted em on beats as a last attempt to make money of the messiah. So if u wanna hear somethin from Koopa go head n bootleg this cd, don't give phonies like paid in partial records money.
Please Dont Press Purchase.......2005-11-06
Listen..... You hear it?????? Thats the sound of a horrible record.. Dont get me wrong Koopa is the King but this album which I will admitt to bootlegging cause it doesent deserve a half a penny... Folks this album is worse than Milli Vanillis greatest hits.. Its thrown together with half verses from Chamillionaire and half verses from Paul Wall.. The only good songs are jacked... You can purchase these good songs in the "REAL" by getting Chamillitary and Mixtape Messiah... Mad Hatta and Big Cat are lames and I cant believe they realesed this phoney album... Paid in Partial records is all garbage and this album should be removed from this web site immediatly.. Any real Chamillionaire fan should be digusted by this Album which has no respect for The Game... This is as fake as Lil Kims breasts and face... I personally would rather listen to a Elton John album before i Bump This Garbage....... Dyke Jones Phoney
WTF?.......2005-10-11
Don't listen to the other reviews, fresh from one of the swisha house veterans and southern masters comes Controversy Sells. THIS IS NOT 50 CENT AND FRED DURST, THIS IS DJ PAUL WALL & CHAMILLIONAIRE SORT UR FACT OUTS!... With songs like "True" and "Still" this just shows the masters at their best, no-one has changed their voice, no-one has changed their name, this is 100% Chamillionaire/King Koopa & DJ Paul Wall.
Pasted vocals under different beats.......2005-07-26
This is not a very well put together cd. Chamillionaire left Paid in Fool records before completing this album. So the DJ's and CEO of PNF pasted all of Chamillionaires lyrics from "Mixtape Messiah" on some of their beats to complete the album. This record doesn't have the same mesh from Paul Wall and Chamillionaire you heard on "Get Ya Mind Correct." I got this cd thinking it was Chamillionaire's first solo album he had been promoting, but it was a cd PNF dropped using Chamillionaire's title. His first album has been switched to the title "The Sound of Revenge." PNF was dissing Chamillionaire on a couple of tracks, I found this odd considering they were droppin his album; but Chamillionaire cleared up everything on the cd entitled "Chamillitary." This cd was defintately an upset, the whole logic behind the cd is rediculous. Although there are a 2 good origional tracks, "Respect my Grind" and "True," I wouldn't recommend this cd if you heard "The Mixtape Messiah" album.

Skull Duggrey Is Tight!.......2007-05-25
First I'd like to say I'm happy I bought this cd and I like it alot, but Im also going to warn you guys theres only a couple good tracks....Clap Your Worker, & Skull, are the 2 tightest tracks and I listen to them alot. They alone are worth getting this cd for because they will remind you of the old Skull Duggrey from No Limit. The track titled Ridicule has a tight beat but its just a smokers anthem so he basically waisted a hot track because he didn't rap on it, he just repeated a chorus like rythem through the whole track. I'm rating this CD 3 stars because These Wicked Streets & Hoodlum Fo'Life would be considered 5 stars so I'm judging this CD upon those 2 cd's. Over-all, If your a Skull Duggrey fan, Hold it down for him and buy this album to add to your collection. Hope this review helps you out! P.S. I'm editing my review again because I made it seem like theres only 2 tight tracks... No Joke,Games Unlimited,They Dont Know Me are all tight , plus the more I listen to the album I like it more & more... I rate this CD 4 stars! He did good.

cool music, but not fo everyone!!.......2006-07-25
To tell you the truth I kind of bought the CD for the cover by Roger Dean, However; it is read neat stuff. As a previous reviewer mentioned its like Stravinsky brought up to date. If you like progressive jazz this album is for you.
If you are not into the real far our scene you probably won't like it. I give it four stars because no matter how good it is it is not the ultimate album for me. I prefer some trance and more mystical directions. The once in while when I want some excellent improvisation I will reach for this album and sit back and listen, but only once in while.
Birdsongs... Sweet! .......2005-01-13
This is my first taste of "Birdsongs" music and I am taken with it. Many Progressive rhythms, elements of jazz, classical and rock. This is instrumental music. Sax, Guitar, Keyboards, Synths are delicate and percussions galore. Song lengths between 3 and 7 minutes in length. Beautiful shifting textures, flowing jazz lines, a little hip-hop beat now and then with a diverse range of percussive instruments. Only four members are listed although five others appear on the album, one of which, Roger Miller, was a former band member. The other four are percussionists.
Fans of classical and jazz music may enjoy this album. At times is reminds me of Bill Brufords Earthworks (first album, at least). Prog-metal fans might have a hard time understanding it. The guitar lines are rich and tasteful, never bombastic, occassionally Holdsworthian.
Stravinsky is listening to it in Mod-A-Go-Go Heaven.......2004-11-19
The previous reviewer wrote a perfect description. I hesitate to call this rock music. It sounds like modern classical music played with electric instruments. With a lot of march rhythm thrown in. But let it be known that it's also eminently cold-blooded in the same way that Stravinsky is cold-blooded. My favorite track is AFTER. The constantly-shifting gothic chord-changes are a lot of fun.
Making You Smarter.......2004-05-04
This is really intelligent music. This album represents the best fusion of Classical Music with Rock that I have ever heard. Yes, it is cerebral and it does challenge you. I have found that if you concentrate on it you will feel your brain working better after you are finished with it. This occurs because it stimulates new neural patterns in your brain - you really have not heard music like this before. It is not Classical it is not Rock. It really is both. And I'm not talking about the pseudo art rock of 70's Genises or Yes. This is the real deal.
Fantastic Modern Prog!.......2004-02-23
Birdsongs is a band with a twenty year history. For me, this is their best CD yet! Traveling through realms of Classical, jazz, prog rock with the wall of sound textures and full instramentation. Birdsongs of the Mesozoic and the Iridium Controversy CD, stands alone and away from the tired prog pack!
As people appreciate when you reference an unknown band to other bands, I will attempt to do so. Birdsongs... however, stands alone, but the musical intellegence might be simular to Renaissance, Neil Ardley, Henry Cow, (Orchestral) ELP (only better!),.. The musical pieces just flow on their own volition. Plenty of time signature changes yet the songs work, and they are NOT abrasively abrupt. The music leaves the listener intregred, reflective and not at all bored.
The instramentation is complex and yet it works on an aesthetic level unlike most prog. Not as "heavy" as Art Zoyd or King Crimson- yet shares the ability to keep the listener engaged! Track six is my personal favorite. Excellent Spin!

Outstanding Record.......2005-09-23
Luciano has made several terrific records, and this is one of his finest. A spiritual focus is fairly common in reggae, of course, but there are few artists who move beyond the cliches, who really have something of their own to say. The spiritual focus is present in much of Luciano's music, following his discovery of Rastafari, but there is a seriousness and maturity to the songs here that brings his music to that rare level. In that sense, this may be Luciano's first truly great record.
Highlights here include a terrific rendition of Peter Tosh's classic anthem "Legalise It"; "Patiently",an extraordinary setting of the Beatutides (Matthew 5); a heartfelt treatment of "Rivers of Babylon"; and the closing "Amen", which transforms an old "Negro spiritual" to a reggae classic. The scope of this record is simply astonishing, as Luciano draws on influences well outside the norm for "conscious" reggae.
doesn't get any better.......2002-03-29
Luciano is the most important reggae singer since Bob Marley.
This album proves he is at the peak of his career.
Real instruments were used here, and the sound is quite different from his other release of 2001, A New Day, which uses computerized riddims.
Buy this record if you want spiritual, melodic, roots reggae, held together by a tight drum and bass.
Track 2 "Call On Yaweh" really stands out.
Also check out Luciano's main influence, Dennis Brown (70's material)
Almighty Luciano.......2001-12-10
When you think Luciano has done it all, he suprises everyone by toping himself.
Great Controversy is one the best work and album that Luciano has produced. Every song in this ablbus is will send sweet vibrations to your brain. I give thanks to Jah for his messenger, LUCIANO.
Beautiful CD.......2001-04-07
Belive me people, this is truly a sweet cd. Arguably Luciano at his best. No Boom tunes but a very mellow relaxing peaceful mindset. Wicked version of the Tosh classic, gotta say I prefer the messenger's version! ....Nevamind!!!... Bless
Contemporary Roots Reggae Music Gem.......2001-03-03
I look for righteous music that I can enjoy with my children. This is perfect. Social and religious lyrics reign supreme.
Production is top-notched and Luciano's singing is serene and smooth. He's quickly becoming one of reggae's greatest artists.
Buy this CD if you are a lover of positive reggae music.

First, best, @#$% brilliant........2005-11-07
It's sad to see Southern rap hit the big time now that it has turned into nothing more than mumbles about bling and cough syrup set to cell phone beats, because Willie D blew @#$% up almost a generation ago with this album and got no props.
Between Ready Red's precise production and Willie D's hollerin' drawl, Controversy's lyrics are punched into your think-hole like a sledgehammer through a plate glass window. And the lyrics put even the mighty Ice Cube to shame with a mix of funny, nasty, hard, real, and, well, nasty. This one shouldn't just be re-released, it should be required listening for all the weak MCs and lazy producers making millions right now. Hell, Willie himself should be forced to listen to this, too, after "The Foundation", but he probably can't afford those high collectors' prices.
The Mothaf@cking Geto Boys.......2005-10-26
This album started it all off for me. I love all the old Geto Boys shizzle on rap alot. Other highlights are Bushwick Bills Little Big Man and Phantam of the Rapra. This album is mad dope though...check out Trip Across Mexico
Justice.......2003-07-10
This is by far the hardest rap CD, i have ever heard. It makes me upset to see Willie Dee not get his props. Willie Dee is so hardcore. Then his country sound makes it colorful. I mean the way he comes off is incredible. He's original, creative and funny. This man is an entertainer. He can do it all. Rap gansta, kick it and make you laugh. Put the F'Gun Away is harder than DMX's Rough Rider Anthem. This song make you want to tear up some sh_t! Alot of people just don't know. Then Dee has Kinky MotherF_cker. Alot of rappers have talked about sexual experiences but nobody but Willie Dee could it like this. This song shows is creativeness, separating he from the rest. Welfare B_tches just tells the realness out here in da world. Dee talks about sisters and brothers who don't won't to work for nothing ant nothing. Bald Head Hoes shows Willie's funny personality.
People just don't understand pure originality. They want the norm. A incredible album.
willie d is the realest.......1999-06-22
who gots the alabum pla witcha momma. need to have that funk
This album is as hard core as Grip It! On the Other Level.......1998-11-17
This album is by far the hardest and most enjoyable of any of the solo albums of all the Geto Boys, including Scarface. If you liked Grip It!, you'll definetly like this album. This is real hardcore gangsta rap.
