4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Collection of Russian Liturgical Music.......2004-04-20

Russian liturgical music from the monasteries is a combination of a number of different styles. Since the Church id from the orthodox tradition, the music is influenced partly by Greek liturgical music. It also has a bit of a western Gregorian flow to it, though this is not as strong as other influences. It also has a bit of Russian folk music flair to it. Musically it is interesting, but it also has a spiritual quality to it. Perhaps because it has survived against tremendous odds during the Soviet years, it has strength to it as well.

This recording by the Novospassky Monastery Choir contains liturgical music primarily for Easter but contains other prayers and psalms as well. The CD has liner notes but no translation for the music, but for the price, this is not a complaint. The choir is strong and is able to convey both the majesty and beauty of the music.

Once again, Naxos has provided a unique quality musical experience and a budget price.

5 out of 5 stars Hella Rare, Hella Expensive, Hella Great!.......2007-03-07

Lil 1/2 Dead went all out in 1994 with his debut The Dead Has Arisen. This one and his 1996 album "Steel On A Mission" are rare and sell for 40-50 dollars. The cost for me to get this one was 41 bucks. It was more than worth it. As a huge G-Funk fan, this one fulfilled all my expectations and then some. The production was top notch and the beats bang!!! Tracy Kendrick handles most production along with extra by Dj Silk, Clever, K Phlx, mong a few others, and they lace HD up with some fire on wax. HD is a tight rapper with a laconic flow and smooth delivery. I love the smothness of "Had To Be A Hustler", which recalls mashing and slanging and banging to survive coming up in Long Beach over a bella Long Beach type beat!! The bangers "Eastside Westside," and "That's What You Get" employ sick, Dr. Dre influenced whiny synthesizers along with some sick gangsta flows from Half Dead. "Still On A Mission" is awesome; I love the old school rawness of the foreground beat, and the smooth relaxing keyboards in the background, and the erie ghostly extra keyboards recall "Getto Jam" by Domino. The other tracks are awesome as well. I recommend saving up extra money, bacause it is well worth the high cost!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Who the hell said a dead man can't rap?"...outstanding '94 g-funk.......2006-12-20

Lil 1/2 Dead dropped his highly slept-on debut album in 1994. This album has been completely under the radar from the day it dropped through today, and it's a darn shame because this album is outstanding. Tha Dogg Pound affiliate made this album based on the model of the classic west coast g-funk albums that preceded it, but it comes across as completely original and holds in own in any company. This album, simply put, is excellently produced and the beats are outstanding. While always upbeat and faster than Dr. Dre or Warren G's slow g-funk, these beats create a very laidback vibe that is perfect for riding or just chilling to. Using deep, heavy bass, whiny synths, funky guitars and instrumentals, and clever sampling, the numerous producers who contributed to "The Dead Has Arisen" create a unique, consistent, gorgeous sound of g-funk. The cover and title are actually pretty misleading, they almost suggest a sort of angry horrorcore. Half Dead is a fun rapper to listen to, and while not lyrically inventive, he holds his own on all the tracks and does the beats justice with very good verses. He has a youthful sounding delivery, and he speaks fondly of life in his hometown of Long Beach. He is fairly similar to rappers like DJ Quik and Daz Dillinger. This album is simply phenomenal and it's sad that almost no one knows it.

The album begins with "Had to Be a Hustler," which starts the album perfectly. Like all the songs on "The Dead Has Arisen," the beats are immensely funky and catchy, making any head nod within a hundred feet. Over the amazing production, Half Dead tells of growing up in his neighborhood. The weed ode "12 Pacofdoja" has an amazing beat, one that DJ Quik would later use for his song "Itz Your Fantasy." "Stz'll Got It" revolves on a simple concept ("I still got that late night hype...") and becomes a great party cut. "Still on a Mission" delivers his late-night philosophy, another highlight, and "Dead Man Can't Rap" is one of my favorite songs on the album. Over a tough, woozy beat, Dead represents his character and home. "That Dope N... 1/2 Dead" and "East Side, West Side" are both excellently produced cuts that show some of the best of 94 west coast. "Now They Come Around" is humorous and catchy, as is "That's What You Get," which has a good hook. The more subdued "I Don't Stop" precedes the tough "You Know Me." The album ends with "Dedicated," a perfect closing.

"The Dead Has Arisen" is an album that I never seem to tire of, and every time I listen to it I seem to enjoy it more. Half Dead proves to be an entertaining MC, and the beats are amazing. This album is nearly impossible to find today, and very expensive if found, but I recommend it immeasurably to any fan of the west coast g-funk sound. This is an excellent album that never received its due respect.

When I heard about this one, I had the luck that soon as I started searchin' it, I found it. And now it's in my collection. I really liked this one, Lil HD had some nice lyrics, and the production is classic. Damn, I just have to get the Mass 187 - Real Trues Paying Dues...

3 out of 5 stars Artistically beautiful...........2003-07-18

however, I am not a big fan of Sr. Mary Keyrouz and her voice is the lead in every Chant on this disk. A bit bland compared to other religious chant CD's on the market. The only reason I gave this CD 3 Stars is because it is accurate in it's presentation of Eastern Rite (Maronite) Chant.

I much prefer and would recommend without any reservation whatsoever the CD, "Chants of the Maronitic Liturgy" by Prof. Louis Hage and P. Paul Rouhana over this album.
