John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. But selecting John Lennon as the author of those messages will make people listen and, with this collection, may keep them listening. --Scott Holter

While saving Dafur is an extremely important cause, listening to this album is really difficult. Most, if not all, of these covers are really unimaginative, boring, tedious, plastic, crappily rendered. The only decent cover is Whatever Gets You Through the Night by Los Lonely Boys. It's just decent, not great, and the only reason I like it is because I never liked the fast tempo of the original. Los Lonely Boys slow it down, and get it in a nice groove. But that's the only good song. There are no great ones, and some are downright obnoxious. Steven Tyler's Give Peace a Chance is histronic, Aguilera's Mother has no feeling at all, REM's #9 Dream is boring, and Nobody Told Me is really bad, with a smarmy lead vocal on it. Avril's Imagine sucks, too. Like another reviewer here said, just give the money to Dafur. That's the best thing to do.

2 out of 5 stars great songs ruined for an important cause.......2007-07-24

give money to amnesty international. getting the human rights campaign organization money is the purpose of this collection, and frankly you would be better off giving them your cash directly. they'll get more of it, because less is spent on packaging and promoting this release. furthermore, you won't have two useless discs cluttering up your shelf.

i don't understand the glowingly positive reviews. john lennon was a great songwriter, and he performed his songs with honesty and grit, and sometimes even levity. lennon was truly a songwriting genius. his songs are not the problem with this release. the performances are.

i have not heard so many lackluster covers in one place before. i have not seen such mismatched artists attempting songs that don't at all suit them. even worse, the bands that should be giving their all don't seem to be trying (i'm looking at you, u2). "oh great, another tribute-benefit-cause cd. how long's this going to take?"

of the 23 tracks here, only a few sound at all interesting. somehow r.e.m. turn in a passable "#9 dream"; aerosmith manages to make "give peace a chance" sound weird; somehow lenny kravitz captures the strung out agony of "cold turkey"; youssou n'dour makes "jealous guy" interesting; green day seem to believe in "working class hero"; regina spektor gives "real love" the delicacy the beatles' version couldn't manage.

by all means contribute to this cause, but it helps everyone more if you give amnesty the money directly and don't waste it on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Instant Karma.......2007-07-21

Interesting mix of artists, some hit, some miss. Glad I bought it. John Lennon's lyrics still ring true

4 out of 5 stars Baby You Can Drive My Karma.......2007-07-19

The songs of John Lennon are a perfect compilation for a political action CD set. The artists who contributed their covers are faithful to the original music and lyrics while adding their own undercurrent trademark sound. It is good to hear these songs again. The Black Eyed Peas provide a fist pumping rendition of "Power To The People." What better time to bring this song out of hibernation. People need to feel empowered today more than ever to Save Darfur, Stop Global Warming and End the War in Iraq. Power to the people, right on!!

5 out of 5 stars really enjoyed it!!!.......2007-07-17

Wonderful music. Its nice to hear a different take on Lennon's music and the artists on this cd did a great job. I have always been one of Lennons biggest fans.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2007-07-09

For those of us who remember the Summer of Love and still enjoy the music of that era, this is lots of fun.
You get to hear Eric Burdon sing about Monterey. You also hear a very polished set of Simon and Garfunkel. Simon and Garfunkel play their two best songs of the time, Homeward Bound and the classic Sounds of Silence.
Janis Joplin is also in top forn with Big Brother singing the blues.
The Byrds with David Crosby finish the first CD
On the second CD you hear Grace Slick and the Airplane do their two classic songs, Somebody to Love and White Rabbit.
You get to hear two songs of Otis Redding and his classic performance at Monterey. The real find to me is Buffalo Springfield with Stills and Young doing, For What its Worth. This is the only recording where you can actually hear them live.
The Who seem out of place but sing the Eddie Cochoran standard Summertime Blues and the Classic My Generation.
Jimi Hendrix does The Wind Cries Mary and Bob Dylans' Like a Rolling Stone. I would have liked to see at least one more song included.
I do however have his performance on DVD and hope to purchase the CD when its released once again on CD.
The Mamas and the Papas end the CD with Straight Shooter, which to me is very weak. They do recover with California Dreamin. Scot McKenzie sings If youre going to San Francisco (Be sure to wear flowers in your hair)
For those who remember and love this music I would recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Monterey Pop Festival.......2007-07-07

The DVD Disc case said 3 discs, was advertised as a 2 disc set. Disc # 1 had 7 good tunes, Disc # 2 had 4 good tunes, OK for the price if you like Simon & Garfunkel, the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, The Mammas & The Papas.

Overall, OK

3 out of 5 stars Consider Purchasing the 3-DVD or 4-CD Box Instead.......2007-07-04

First of all, if your interest in this June 1967 concert is only casual, or if you're on a budget, or if you're trying to conserve space in your home, then this 2-CD set will suffice. If so, then consider my rating 4-star. It contains some really great performances, has a total of 26 tracks and clocks in at around 95 minutes. It also boasts 3 previously unreleased on CD tracks (2 by Simon & Garfunkel, 1 by Buffalo Springfield). So, this is a fine compact collection For What It's Worth [sorry, I couldn't resist].

However, for those of you who really dig The Summer of Love sound, then I recommend getting the 3-DVD set The Complete Monterey Pop Festival - Criterion Collection which runs 238 minutes. This DVD set contains Pennebaker's original concert film, a second disk featuring the complete Hendrix and Otis Redding performances (possibly my 2 favorite sets), and the third disk has more than two hours of outtake footage including several major bands that never appeared in the Pennebaker film for various reasons. For details, search DVDJournal.com.

Or maybe if you're got money to burn and want a collectible, consider Amazon Used & New for 1997 4-CD set Monterey International Pop Festival [30th Anniversary Box Set] or the older 4-CD set from 1992: Monterey International Pop Festival. Both 4-CD sets have 70 tracks - close to 3 times what the new 2-CD set contains. Each CD is over 70 minutes with 5 cuts by Big Brother & Joplin, 7 by The Byrds, 5 by Jefferson Airplane, 5 by The Mamas & The Papas, 6 by The Who, 5 classic Otis Redding and 9 stellar Hendrix tracks (also available as Jimi Plays Monterey).

Like I said, the 2-CD set is a bargain for what it is. It's a real shame that Razor & Tie didn't produce two 70+ minute disks since there were so many other performances to include and over 45 minutes left to fill. But my money is on the other options. Still, I bought the 2-CD set anyway for the 3 unreleased cuts which augmented my 1992 set; those cuts are on the DVDs. I don't notice any difference in the sound quality between the new set and the 1992 version. As others who reviewed the original box sets noted, the sound quality isn't the best (generally not as good as Woodstock) and there are some performers who frankly aren't that interesting, even on the 2-CD version.

PS: The 40th anniversary is being celebrated the weekend of July 28th, 2007. Peace!

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Magical Moment.......2007-07-02

... A Truly Magical Moment ... Monterey Pop was a truly magical moment in the history of Rock and Roll. The summer of 1966 was one of the great peaks of "The SIXTIES," which from a musical perspective I believe really began in 1964 and ended in 1975, peaking in the summer of 1971. So much great music came out in this time, it is no wonder we still look back on it in total amazement.

... This double CD is a real gem of a recording, and a real boon and blessing to all of us who lived though those days, enjoying the music firsthand as it happened. This was before Woodstock, before The Concert for Bangla Desh, and before Watkins Glen. This was a rare moment in time before it all exploded like a super nova of sound out into the world; a special moment of graceful, electric, ecstatic excitement that was shared by musicians and fans alike. It was an intimate experience treasured by all who were there. This music is beaming with embryonic beauty and charm. A truly magical moment! ... YOWZA! - The Aeolian Kid

First there was Cesaria Evora, Then Lura, and now, the Portuguese/Cape Verdean singer/composer/guitarist Sara Tavares. The title of this CD (pronounced bal-on-SAY) refers to the equilibrium necessary for balancing her mixed, Crioulo culture that stretches from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Blessed with an angelic voice, and a knack for writing accessible compositions that are global, yet ancestral, Tavares is closer to Les Nubians than to Evora, as the title track makes clear. She's more about adapting her homeland's musical conceptions to include Angolan sembe Afrobeats on "Poka Terra," with rapper Melo D, reggae, and Cape Verdean coladeira rhythms on "Planeta Sukri," co-starring vocalist Boy Ge Mendes. Fadista Ana Moura helps Tavares tell her soulful story on "De Nua." With this heartfelt, autobiographical work, Sara Tavares emerges as a new dark and lovely diva for this decade. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

This music is mellow, yet enlivening, calm, yet catchy. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-06-29

In Portugal this singer is very famous, you can see her face everywhere, is the star of the edge of Europe, this second album is the best this singer had made, happiness and energy, this artist is great!

5 out of 5 stars Delicious joyous and warm enfolding beauty!.......2007-03-02

Cape Verde gives us a great gift in Sara Tavares! I saw a video without sound on an airplane for Balance - I was trying to guess the tempo or the style of music, but I got caught up in watching the dancers. Then I listened to a sample online, and was sold! After I bought this album, I listened to it 7 times in a row that first day. It is lush and varied and her voice is delicate and strong. The complex rhythms and instrumentations, the gorgeous Portugese language, and the general buoyancy of this record are addictive. I listen to it at least once a day and I have had now for about a month. Support this artist and buy her work, don't download!

5 out of 5 stars What a find !.......2007-02-12

......I first heard Sara T on a local Public TV program, and of course she played Balance' ! I just fell in love with it, and went to listen to her at our "World Music Festival" in Chicago last October.....again I was blown away ! I finally got hold of the CD as a Christmas present ...and immediatly bought another copy for a friend of mine who lives in Wuhan, China...unfortunately, the Chinese censors allowed the CD "wrapper" to go through, but removed the CD itself. :-( ......I really like every track on this one !

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-02-09

I have followed Sara Tavares from the beginning of her career and I must say that her music is getting better with time. I recently saw her in a concert in Boston, MA and was moved to tears. Her voice is absolutly beautiful and you feel the love that she has for her country in the songs that she sings. This is an album that you will never be tired of listening to. I promise!!!

1 out of 5 stars WHAT!!.......2007-07-23

Why ANYONE would feel the need the "remake" or add to the music of IZ is way beyond me (other than the obvious - $$$$). Skip this one and pick up any one of his previous albums - Trust me, they're all you'll ever need!

4 out of 5 stars it is a good cd .......2007-07-22

I think that this is a good cd with the music of IZ, it has somewhat of a softer feeling to it.

4 out of 5 stars Tastefully done.......2007-07-20

As a long time Iz fan, I found these "updated" songs tastefully done. I
give Mr. de Mello credit, he showed a lot of self-constraint with his
enhancements. Iz's voice and ukulele are never over powered by the
orchestral sounds.

The songs on this ablum are definitely not my favorite versions, but
they are enjoyable. And it's always good to hear Iz's voice...

2 out of 5 stars This is a train wreck........2007-07-18

I just finished listening to the complete CD and did not notice it had ended. Over produced is one term that comes to mind. Orchestrated in bizarre parts throughout. The reviewer who called it "The Little Mermaid" type of music was correct. It just doesn't sound right. The simplicity of Iz and a ukulele on a white sandy beach was tied to the Disneyland Monorail and Goofy was the pilot. A disaster on the scale of Ishtar. Sometimes, shoes are not required.

Iz is beautiful, but nothing new here. Don't waste your money. The two stars are for Iz, otherwise zero stars.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative.......2007-07-17

I love virtually everything Iz has done, and this is no exception. The innovative mixing of previously recorded vocals with new orchestration works. It is not necessarily better than the existing Iz recordings; it is different, and therefore well worth adding to your collection.

There will likely be lots of scoffing at Marc Anthony's interpretation--both on disc and onscreen--of late salsa singer Hector Lavoe. But let's not forget that Anthony is a salsa superstar in his own right. He has anchored some of the genre's most thrilling moments and has taken salsa to audiences not normally exposed to the sweltering sound. The El Cantante soundtrack is a solid effort, notable for Anthony's dedication to recreating Lavoe's distinct delivery and phrasing. He puts aside his own emotive stylings for a more subdued performance on several tracks, including the celebratory "Mi Gente" and the mournful "Escandalo." Anthony is virtually unrecognizable during "Che Che Cole," "Quitate," and the standout "Que Lio," which makes the project all the more intriguing. Jennifer Lopez, Anthony's wife in real life and onscreen in El Cantante, croons pensive closing ballad "Toma de Mi." Even without the film, the soundtrack stands as an earnest homage to a tragic icon. --Joey Guerra

3 out of 5 stars Chicago Salsera.......2007-07-25

Mark Anthony is probably the best salsero we have now in 07. Hector was one of the best we had in the 70's. Hector Lavoe did his thing, he did it his way, the way it was hot back then. Now we have Mark Anthony repeating the exact same music the exact same way. I like this album because Hector Lavoe was a great salsa singer. He is one of my personal favorites. Mark Anthony on the other hand is also a great salsa singer but with alot more vocal range. It's a good album not a great album. I think Mark Anthony should have been more creative and made it his own, using that awesome range of his.He should've went all out. He was working with some really great songs, I just think he should've gave it 100% of Mark Anthony, not just trying to make it sound like 100% of Hector Lavoe. I do understand that he is in the movie acting as Hector Lavoe, and he is obviously trying to be 100% of this character. I'm kinda split between he shoulda woulda coulda. But overall it's good. I personally prefer listening to the original stuff from Lavoe himself.

5 out of 5 stars Marc did a great job!.......2007-07-24

I think Marc Anthony did a very good job considering that you can't really sing all out to Hector's songs. Hector did not have a very powerful voice or a big range like Marc does. So you can tell Marc is holding his voice back. Marc does not really sound like himself. So he did a good job on this cd of not sounding like himself but trying to sing in more of Hector's syle.

1 out of 5 stars Hector Lavoe Fan.......2007-07-24

I think Marc Anthony could have done a better job on this soundtrack. I just hope that the movie is better then the soundtrack.

Viento a Favor is Mexican superstar Alejandro Fernandez's 15th studio disc in as many years as a singer. But he still approaches each project with the urgency and earnestness of a newbie singer. That's what makes each tune a small celebration, an intimate moment of discovery. There are no wasted moments amid the sterling arrangements, some of the best in Fernandez's lush pop repertoire. (He's an equally heralded ranchera singer.) Viento a Favor features tunes written by Leonel Garcia and Noel Schajris (better known as emotive Latin-pop duo Sin Bandera) and Mexican singer Reyli Barba. They're all taken to wuthering heights by Fernandez's stellar vocal range, which goes from hushed whispers to booming intensity. First single "Te Voy a Perder" is an epic romance, and "Amor Gitano," a duet with bilingual diva Beyoncé, expectedly smolders. Closing tune "Cuando Estamos Juntos" is another surprise, an acoustic-flavored ode to simple joy. --Joey Guerra

I love Alejandro soooooo much I dream of him. I listen to his concert in Spain CD three to four times a week and watch his DVD very often. He's my idol. I love his other cd's also "Corazon Abierto" and his Mariachi CD's. He's awesome! This new cd of his, just isn't his style. I believe he's trying to get into the pop scene, but he's better with his balads and Mariachi music. If you want to listen to it, I suggest buying a used one instead and save your money.
Ale, you can come to my home anytime for dinner and ??!

Ale's big FAN!

1 out of 5 stars If this is Billy being deep, then I'd hate to see his flippant side.......2007-07-17

Tony Danza railed against CNN dubious coverage of Paris Hilton's incarceration. Does this make him philosophical as well?

My problem with Tarantula is that it hardly brings anything new to the table. BC is merely doing a rehash of what people already know. Yes, we are unhandily obsessed with the culthood of celebrity. This is not breaking news. I'm not sure what reaction Billy expected by putting Paris on the cover. Did he think people would turn off The Hills, pick up the latest Mother Jones, and call their state senator?

If anything, the whole thing smacks of opportunism and hypocrisy on Billy's part. For example, see the Pumpkins MySpace saturation. See their latest contest of "make your own Tarantula video using our original green-screen footage!". See Billy's childish blog postings of "It's James' fault that SP broke up! D'Arcy was a mean-spirited, drug-addict! "

Don't bite the hand that feeds you, BC.

I'm guessing Billy was one of those people that made fun of the elected Homecoming royalty in high school but secretly dreamt of being voted king himself. Now he has graduated to criticizing E!'s coverage choices but where would Billy be without his fawning fans? The man clearly enjoys his celebrity status.

As for the song itself, it hardly breaks any new ground musically or lyrically. Yeah, it's full of (misdirected) rage but it has all the power of a banana-cream pie being dropped from a ten-foot ladder. Which is too bad when you consider the power of true zeitgeist songs like Eve of Destruction, Blowin' in the Wind, Imagine, or Orange Crush. Tarantula hardly rates among these tunes.

Borrowing a trick from BC... Here are my b-sides for the title of this review.
OMG! This isn't gr8, it sux...
Billy, meet the pot and the kettle.
The drama queen has no clothes.
Would you like some weienerschnitzel with your zeitgeist, Frau Corgan?
No, I meant what does "ironic" mean?

4 out of 5 stars The song is good and the album cover is a commentary.......2007-07-16

"If the lyrics "don't let me say this/but you're no worse than me/its crazy/we are the real/if real ever was/and just because/we are the real/they feel we have enough" aren't enough to interpret Billy's motives, the not too subtle single cover with Paris Hilton standing in front of a mushroom cloud with a Blackberry in hand completely gives them away. The concept of the new Smashing Pumpkins album centers around America's apathy and languorous attitude concerning the political and social climate produced by our leaders and felt by people around the world. Indeed, the climate of bloggers and MySpace has led to a public more interested in Britney's Spears' haircut than more serious subjects. Although Billy admits, Paris and his listeners are no worse than him. Someone, (the internet, paparazzi, corporations?) gave us sound..."

Overall, Tarantula is a guitar driven pop track that is new and classic Pumpkins all at the same time. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Death From Above isn't so good, and sounds like a repetitious b-side from Billy's solo project.

Unfortunately, I don't think most internet posters are as philosophical as Billy. He is commenting on social decadence and fascination of the public with celebrity, even in the face of the increasingly frightening political front. Ironically, he is also commenting on the absurdity of people gaining notoriety for nothing. Something, those posting opinions on web-forums and review sites should take note of.

One final note, Zeitgeist is an album not about politics or social issues in general. Even though it is a political album, it isn't saying one side or another is right or wrong, it is personal in that it is just Billy's feelings and thoughts about these subjects. I have seen some posts saying that the poster won't listen to an album that is against the war in Iraq. Although the album implies that Billy doesn't agree with the war, it doesn't explicitly criticize it. It more just comments on how Americans are (more interested in Paris Hilton than politics, we are all stars since the advent of the internet, blogs, and MySpace, and overall the system is broken).

I really can't see how putting Paris Hilton on an album cover as a commentary, should yield such a vehement reaction. What has she ever done to you? Did she kill your dog? She is a girl who is famous for nothing, and really hasn't contributed much positive or negative to society. Yet, many posters would make her the equivalent of Hitler.

5 out of 5 stars Its a single.......2007-07-14

Let's put our thinking caps on here people. I doubt Paris being on the cover is meant to be a compliment to her. I'm not the greatest at interpreting art but I can take a stab at this one. There is what appears to be a nuclear bomb going off in the back ground, yet in the foreground is Paris Hilton. MAYBE they're pointing out how people are too obsessed with distractions like Paris Hilton to pay attention to more important things that are going on in the world. If you know what Zeitgeist means and the meaning behind its album art you'll see this fits right in.
As far as the songs go, I like them, but lets face it, singles are about as dead as vinyl these days. This ones for colletors only or people who don't believe in downloading music.

1 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it Zero.......2007-07-14

2 stars get taken off for Paris Hilton being on the cover now add a crappy song & what you have is a coaster for drinks. Enjoy!

BTW:Billy took the pic of Paris himself...Retard!

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of time and $$$.......2007-07-13

For ever "reunion", there is a motive, money. And Billy Corgan the (in name only) Smashing Pumpkins have demonstrated the extreme in alienating their fans and profiting for themselves. Not only are both these tracks readily available (depending on where you purchased one of the seven (yes seven) different releases of Zeitgeist, they place none other than Paris hilton on the cover of their single. Let's give the fans a little credit....for a "band" (or...The BIlly Corgan Project)who always tried to be unique, it seems a desperate marketing attempt to get in touch with "new" fans that are just reaching the college age.

After the commercial failures of Zwan & his Adore-like solo album, Mr. Corgan learned that marketing is mearly the name yyou put out, and with only 2 of the original four pumpkins (Jimmy Chamberlain worked on Zwan & guest spotted on the Solo album...disqualifying this Pumpkins "reunion")
this is just an attempt to cash in on a new generation of fans, whilst keeping Warner Bros. happy.

As for the single....completely avoid....the only good song on Zeitgeist is the 10 minute epic United States...which sounds like it would have fit on MCIS-Adore or even Machina

Made up of former displaced persons from the killing fields of Sierra Leone, members of the Refugee All Stars (a.k.a. R.A.S.) were forced to flee for their lives during the 1990s, fanning out into nearby West African nations. Through continued hard times, bandmates Reuben M. Koroma, Francis (Franco) Langba, and Abdul Rahim (Arahim) Kamara entertained and heartened their compatriots with truthful, gently satiric, liltingly infectious tunes. Filmmakers Banker White and Zach Niles made a prize-winning documentary about the band's courageous struggle, thereby bringing their story to an international audience. Backed by Keith Richards, Sir Paul McCartney, and other socially conscious celebrities, R.A.S. embarked on a rapturously received world tour and were at long last able to augment their earlier, but nonetheless invaluable, field recordings with professionally engineered studio tracks. The resulting seventeen songs travel through deceptively relaxed Sierra Leonean Palm Wine music, triple-rhythmed gbute vang and reggae-like sounds (complete with toasting), Nigerian Afro-Beat, and even echoes of Congolese soukous. Backed by sweet yet astringent vocal harmonies, sultry guitars, homemade percussion, and playfully retro-sounding organ riffs, each selection reveals still another facet of a bittersweet but ultimately triumphant saga of survival. At long last, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are poised to become the superstars they were always destined to be. --Christina Roden

Album Description

This is a group of musicians who lived for years as refugees in the West African nation of Guinea. While living in a tent camp, they acquired a couple beat up guitars and a rusted out sound system and began playing. American documentary filmmakers made the band the focus of their movie, which received enthusiastic endorsements from the likes of Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Angelina Jolie, Joe Perry, and Ice Cube. The film's success has allowed the band to tour internationally to ecstatic audiences. Born in the midst of a violent, decade-long civil war, the group and its music celebrate our ability to sustain hope, inspiration, and creativity - the best in us - even in a climate of rage, loss, and madness.

5 out of 5 stars Rock to the rhythm of the Refugees.......2007-07-12

I lived in Sierra Leone for 4 years, from 1971-1974. The time I spent there has shaped my beliefs. I was introduced to new music, new languages and this album brings it all back. As well as the Hi-Life and more traditional songs, this album has some really good roots reggae

But, don't buy it because I'm getting misty eyed. Buy it because the music is inspiring and makes you want to dance. Buy it because you've never heard anything from Sierra Leone. And, when you've bought it, go out (or online) and find the album by Afro National.

I was lucky to live in Sierra Leone and I love this music. Now to try to find the tv program which goes with it...

5 out of 5 stars ABOUT TIME! Bob Marley would be proud!.......2007-06-27

At a time when we are overwhelmed by negative and ignorant music (with few exceptions) in the US and elsewhere, this CD is a Godsend! Positive and uplifting music along with thought-provoking lyrics by people who really know that you can't be happy if you've never been sad.

The rapper Black Nature has a lot to teach his American rap counterparts. Keep up the good work brother, your work far outstrips the US rappers who have inspired you!

To Grace, The Emperors, and all the other RAS, God bless you all. ZBob Marely is smiling somewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Living Like a Refugee CD is excellent for both music and content.......2007-05-13

I work with refugees here in the U.S. so I was particularly interested in listening to this group of musicians who formed a band while they were in refugee camp. The song "Living Like a Refugee" poetically describes some of the many feelings refugees have when they are uprooted from their homes and forced to flee to another country. Many of the refugees I am working with are from West Africa and they love hearing the music because they identify with the songs and they understand the ethnic languages used with the music. This is the first artistic and creative piece that I know about which has originated in a refugee camp and is now being listened to by ordinary people all over the world. I hope that the music will help all of us to understand that refugees are people just like us and that they deserve to be acknowledged and respected for the courage they demonstrate to the rest of the world, especially those of us in the U.S. who have no idea what it is like to "be a refugee".

5 out of 5 stars Passionate Sounds.......2007-01-19

Great CD filled with passion and emotion. Recommend to anyone. Smooth, relaxing vibes.

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2007-01-15

If you like world music this will be a great addition to your music collection. It has a slight reggae feel to it at times but the lyrics make you really feel where it is coming from. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this 15 song album. Enjoy

The 60's aren't so far away when you hear this CD. Brings back memories!

4 out of 5 stars It's both a Time and an Interdimensional Transport Device!.......2007-05-24

I haven't bought the CD release of the original 3-disc LP. I just want to comment on some of what other reviewers have said. I agree, it's funny to look back on that time as a middle-aged person. I was 15 when Woodstock happened, and couldn't go. Although it may have been one of the first (and certainly one of the largest) examples of hippie capitalism, it didn't seem like a product to us at the time. We felt that a magical change was taking place in the world, and that we stood at an unusual crossroads in history where we could, simply by choosing to do it, change the world for the better. This was a time when music could actually change you, when audiences and performers entered into a symbiosis and used their combined energy and consciousness to explore the realms of ecstasy!...and I'm NOT exaggerating...drugs were not even necessary. When the movie and then the album came out, we kids who didn't go could share the experience in some small way, at least in our minds. In that respect, Woodstock was actually experienced by far more than the 250,000 people who were actually there, and it became an event in our national consciousness. Both the movie and the album blew my little teenage mind, and I could spend many the happy afternoon listening to the album and vicariously being there. To me the proof of the magicality of the event is that the magic comes through even though technically, both film and album are of basically terrible quality. The camera work in the movie is frustrating and grainy. Almost the entire footage of Hendrix has his mic stand obscuring him. Members of bands' rhythm sections are almost never shown. The music and the video for parts of the Who's segment are not from the same part of the song. And the sound quality throughout the LP is pretty mediocre, and some performances suffer from technical difficulties (which is understandable). But for some reason, the magic still comes through....

3 out of 5 stars John Sebastian ... "far-out!"?.......2007-04-04

I keep listening to this cd version & wondering why it seems different to me than the original 3 disc vinyl from the seventies. Where is the studio version of CSN&Y's "Woodstock" that opens the film!? Was that on the vinyl? I loved the Wavy Gravy stuff about, "People we got the Times, we got the times ..." and Max Yasgur, "I'M A FARMER!" But wasn't there a long, "far-out", announcement from John Sebastian about a baby being born at the site? And him going-on, hippy-dippy, about how that baby was gonna be "far-out!" That's been cut from the DVD too. Why, I wonder ... the dialogue was such an important signature of the event. Did the producers decide, 30 years later, that some of that drug/high dialouge was really just embarrasing or what? I wonder. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

5 out of 5 stars Golden Oldie.......2007-02-25

It's pretty funny now to think of Woodstock as an oldie. I was about 15 when the concert happened, and found out about it too late to attend. So when the movie came out I had to see it a couple times and then pick up the three album set. For many in my generation this was our concert weather we attended it live or not. The music on this set show cased some groups like Santanna who had regional followings, but weren't known too well on the national scene. After the release of the movie and albums Santana joined the ranks of super stars.

If you haven't seen the movie, then I suggest seeing it before geting the music because there are pars of the album (CD's) that don't seem to make as much sense if you haven't seen the movie. But since the CD's are practically taken verbatim from the movie you can visit the movie in you mind any time you play the CD's.

Some time back I heard some conservative talk show host ask, "So what was the big deal about Woodstock anyway? A bunch of kids getting drunk, stoned, and listening to music together? Hell! We did that in our Frat house and never found it to be too special." What made Woodstock so enduring was that it showcased what was the essence of the Hippie movement at the time. For the most part it showed that it was possible to have a huge crowd of people get together for a few days and remain civil towards one and other...Regardless of the weather conditions. It almost made us believe that peaceful existance em mass was possible......Of course this was shown to be somewhat a fluke because both concerts and peace marches after Woodstock turned out to have some of the wors violence...Such as the Stones concert at Candle Stick Park. But the idea of Woodstock was at least hopeful for a time, and gave hose of us who were involved in the Hippie movement something to be proud of.

One last thing. I do have the DVD set too. As I said it is kind of funny to think of Woodstock as an "Oldie." When I watched the DVD and listened to some of the interviews with kids who were my age at the time I remember thinking how right on the money they were when I saw the movie as a kid....As an older adult I have to laugh at how much we thought we understood of the world and how little we actually did. That was something no one could convince us of when we were teens with all the answers.

1 out of 5 stars How ironic!!!.......2006-08-18

I had a scathing review of the "Woodstock" film posted for about a month. Now, it's mysteriously gone. Whatever happened to "freedom"? Whatever happened to "free your mind, man"? In a way, the censorship of my ideas is a huge compliment. Sixties-era hypocrisy was never hard to prove, but now it's a slam dunk. Was it a movie and a concert? Yes. Was it "revolutionary" and a tool of "change"? I think not. Thirty-seven years later, Woodstock is nothing but a fine example of youth wasted on the young. There is no amount of censorship that will hide that truth!!!

After immeasurable success in the U.S., Faith Hill finally comes to Europe, and There You'll Be is a sort of catch-up for the best bits we may have missed along the way (or, in other words, a greatest hits collection for the uninitiated). A dozen songs which map the path of the Georgia singer, it includes the massive hit for which she has come to be known over here--"There You'll Be," from the Pearl Harbor soundtrack--together with some pop anthems like "The Way You Love Me (Love to Infinity Mix)." However, the style she delivers most convincingly is that of her roots in country, with "Let Me Let Go", "Piece of My Heart," and "You Give Me Love" from the earlier albums being the clear highlights of this collection. --Gunther Matejka

This import CD by Faith Hill is a great compilation of her hits, it also includes never before released songs such as "over the rainbow" which she performs with great diversity. Although a little pricy, well worth the money for true Faith Hill fans.
