Customer Reviews:
Absolutely the BEST !.......2006-05-31
Our church choir sang a few of these songs which I loved, so I decided to order it. It is a very sweet, gentle, inspiring collection of music. Many times when you get a CD, you are fortunate to find 2-4 on there that you really like enough to play regularly. But on this one, every song is wonderful. This music is so spiritually uplifting and peaceful that you will want to play it regularly. Some if may bring some tears it is so beautiful. John Rutter has a way with this type of music. You will probably want to be giving some of these cd's away to those you love.
Great for bringing a child into this world.......2005-12-22
I had this CD on while in labor with my last child. We had a wonderful homebirth and what better then to have the spirit in our home with this music as we welcomed a brand new baby. It helped me relax and helped the birth be peaceful, calm, and spiritual.
CD like new.......2005-10-02
This CD was advertised as "like new" and it was -- in fact, it was still in the plastic wrapper. I couldn't have found a better deal or quicker service. Everything was great!
The Sweetest Music.......2004-06-07
I love this CD. My family and I listened to it over and over and over again, during the last few weeks of my mother's life. It has been a comfort to me in time of sorrow. Now it brings tears every time I listen to it. This music is like loving arms around me. It touches my soul. I've given so many away, I should have bought a case of them.
This is my new all-time-favorite CD!.......2004-04-22
I bought this CD because I had heard "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" once and loved it. But it's just one of the many beautiful songs on this CD. I'm at a loss to describe what joy this music brings to me each time I listen to it. I carry it from house to car and back again so I can enjoy it wherever I am. I've given away several "Consider the Lilies" CD's to friends and relatives, something I've never done before. Anyone who is facing a serious challenge in life will be uplifted and comforted by this ethereal music.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.
The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11
In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.
We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.
Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.
A- for effort.......2006-02-23
This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.
The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.
What can you say?.......2003-01-03
I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?
How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.
One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.
So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.
Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

Guitarist Ray Obiedo and the fiery Tower of Power horns help turn the throbbing retro-soul-meets-Memphis-flavored-soul-jam "Horn-afication" into one of the most memorable cuts on keyboardist Roger Smith's Consider This--one of smooth jazz's most diverse outings of 2000. Smith begins with the moody undercurrent of the Hammond B-3 beneath the bright, percussive brass, then keeps that brooding texture going beneath a call and response between the horns and his happy-go-lucky keyboard melody. He lays back a bit after this on the gentle funk blues of "Thinkin' Bout Ya!" and the pleasantries of "I'll Always Love You," which wouldn't draw much excitement but for vocals courtesy of the Temptations. Led by flügelhornist Mike Bogart, "Just For Love" plays like a languid Chris Botti tune. It's not until Smith gets back in our face with a raucous hip-hop cover of Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time" that he taxes his chops in the funk and improvisational areas. Odd that he chooses a cover to show some of his best piano work. Smith also goes hog-wild on the percussive insanity of the fusion piece "Hopscotch," which finds him racing circles around Michael Gregory's scorching electric guitar edges. Those whose heads are spinning after that will find solace in the gently rhythmic keyboard-acoustic guitar duet "Workin' It," written by Peter White and featuring his friendly melodic grace. The two get a little more frisky on a bouncy cat-and-mouse approach to their other collaboration, "Uptown." Smith thrives at rhythmic and stylistic smorgasbords, and Consider This is rich with them. --Jonathan Widran
Customer Reviews:
A Winner !!!.......2001-04-16
I was going to pen a review about this album but then I read the one above and was suddenly lost for the words. The music fan from Indianapolis said it all so eloquently. This is another well played album from my collection and indeed like him I'm playing the cd now. I saw a review of this album in the Jazzwise magazine which tempted me to buy this recording. It was somewhat of a gamble for me not having any other of his works. This guy has got real talent - where has he been hiding? My personal favourite is track one, again like the Indianapolis fan I wouldnt class this as smooth jazz, I would say its funky especially if the first track is anything to go by. I'm no expert by any means but I know a good beat when I hear it and this is good music.
In essence a first rate enjoyable cd, I love it!!
Consider This: Top Guest Artists and Surprises From Roger!.......2000-07-28
First things first: there are two lovely photographs of Roger on the liner notes which are very nice to have, since the last CD just contained an artist's rendition of Roger. And it identifies a Web site for Roger (which I have yet to check out)...
So what do you do when you get beat in the OASIS Smooth Jazz Awards? Why, you go out and hire the guy who beat you to contribute to your next CD! And that's exactly what Roger has done, with award-winning Smooth Jazz artist Peter White appearing on Tracks 8 and 11 (he won four OASIS awards in 1999). If that's not enough for you, Roger has also recruited smooth jazz sensation Dave Koz (alto sax), who contributes on Track 3, "I'll Always Love You," with no less than The Temptations (honest!) taking care of the vocals.
Then, just for good measure, you throw in the Tower of Power horn section on Track 1 for a smooth horns track: "Horn-afication." There they are: Doc, Emilio, Norbert, Churchy, and Iron Mike layin' it down! Iron Mike also has a mellow flugelhorn solo on Track 4, "Just for Love," the slowest track on the CD, but certainly not laid back! If that's not enough for you, add Tower of Power's Jeff Tamelier on Tracks 2 and 4 on guitar, Norbert Stachel on Track 9 on alto sax, and Norbert on flute on Track 10 (the title track), "Consider This." Then, just to kick it up another step, *ROGER* plays *flute* on Track 7 and *guitar* on Track 10.
This is upbeat jazz, pure and simple. It may be labeled as Smooth Jazz, but there is nothing boring about it, at least like a lot of the stuff on our local Smooth Jazz station. Roger keeps the pace moving nicely throughout, and man, can he tinkle those ivories! I'm listening to Track 5 at the moment, "Full Moon," in which Roger just rips off a sterling, intricate piano solo followed by a very jazzy guitar solo by Thom Rotella. Roger has ORGAN credits on just two tracks, 2 and 10, BTW.
Track 6, "Remember the Time," starts out with a very funky groove. Roger also has credits in the liner notes on six of the 12 tracks for bass. The bass line in Track 6 is very distinctive.
This is GREAT stuff, folks! I guess we kind of presumed it would be, given Roger's track record and his experience on keyboards. But beyond that, there are some pleasant surprises here with guest artists, additional instrumentation by Roger, and an upbeat style that definitely makes this CD worth owning! And at 55+ minutes' worth, you also get nearly an hour of Smooth Jazz that is perfect for the office, background music while you are working at home, etc. etc. Throw in the vocals of The Temptations on Track 3, and you've got a really well-rounded outing for Roger. This one is going to get lots of airplay on the Smooth Jazz stations, I'm sure! I would have liked to hear more of that mellow Hammond B-3, but this constitutes pure nit-picking, and should not detract from a review to which I otherwise give a solid grade of A.

There are one or two other fine recordings of Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols, but this one is exceptional for its intimacy, a feature of this unique work that's often lost in performers' desire to make it big and exciting. There's plenty of bigness and excitement here, but it all comes from the beautifully controlled, warm-toned singing and the clarity of the vocal articulation. And there's lots of genuine energy, born of the inherent qualities of the music and the poetic texts. Likewise for the performance of the cantata Rejoice in the Lamb, a phenomenal setting for soloists, chorus, and organ of a poem by 18th-century religious poet Christopher Smart, who experienced bouts of madness and wrote this work in an asylum. The spiritual power of its words, especially as set by Britten, is undeniable, and the boys and men of St. John's know exactly how to elicit that power and convey it to us. --David Vernier
