While it gets props for being the first Seattle-area hip-hop compilation to feature the nascent scene of the late 1990s, 14 Fathoms Deep is the aural equivalent of baby steps--especially when compared to later albums (Walkman Rotation being the best of the lot). That said, there are standouts here: Ghetto Children's "Court in Session" is fun (the opening line, "We're going to get medieval on your but-tocks," is laugh-out-loud funny), lyrically smooth, and features an irresistibly catchy bass-plucking hook; Source of Labor distinguish themselves as truly original--and interesting--MCs on "Cornbread"; Mad Fanatic and RagChyld deliver a smooth rap over Mr. Supreme's production on "Official Members"; and Kylin, a female trio removed from the East Coast need to prove that women can be as hard as men, unveil a creative delivery on "Can" that points the way to a more artistic future for hip-hop. Negus 1's backing track and the trio's strong vocals make the track an instant classic. --Randy Silver

Classic Seattle Hip-Hop.......2006-05-13

This LP wasn't as good as "Do The Math" but nonetheless dope. This comp helped widen the scope beyond Vitamin D's clique and give the listener a better sample of the Seattle Hip-Hop sceene. (both good and bad)

Obviously the best tracks are from Vitamin D's extended family and the worst tracks are the thugged out songs that clash with the rest of the album.

I would say cop this LP, but grab a copy of "DO THE MATH" AS WELL!

Seattle has lyrics, that should be evident just by listening to the album. Ghetto Children just listen its smooth. The real gem on this album, or rather one of many is Narkotic's "All Up In My Mix" far from traditional East coast, gangbangin west coast or player bragin hot air. Narkotic is on, Seattle was on, this Album is on. If you like outkast, Nas, DJ shadow, Dj Krush, De La Soul, Black Star, whatevor! I you like Hip Hop you would like this. I you dont like it I heard Master P has a new album out...
