Richard Rodgers always considered Carousel his favorite score, even though it didn't generate the number of popular hits of some of the other shows he produced with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. Their adaptation of the Ferenc Molnar play Liliom is marked by three especially sublime moments. "The Carousel Waltz," Rodgers's alternative to the traditional Broadway overture, serves as an orchestral backdrop to the opening scene and is one of the best miniatures ever written for the theater. "If I Loved You," which establishes the romance of carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae, a late replacement for Frank Sinatra) and nice girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), is a musical minidrama in which the pair's discussion of how they are not in love reveals just how much they are in love. "Soliloquy" is Billy's powerful solo that foreshadows the action to come in Act II. Add the inspirational anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone," and you have Rodgers and Hammerstein's most extraordinary, near-operatic score. On the soundtrack for the 1956 film, MacRae and Jones are in exceptional voice (following their success in 1955's Oklahoma) and the orchestra sounds glorious, but unfortunately some of the numbers were shortened, most notably "If I Loved You." Extensive production notes, an interview with Jones, and a synopsis are included. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars MacRae and Jones soar in this tragic R&H musical.......2007-02-11

This film adaptation of Carousel came shortly after the Oklahoma! film and reunited Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. Although the film was not well-received at the box office, the soundtrack shows MacRae, Jones and the superb cast performing their roles to their heart's content. Their performance helps bring out the pathos in this tragic R&H musical, which Rodgers himself considered his favourite of all his works.

MacRae shines vocally as Billy Bigelow, bringing an open-hearted musicality and sincerity to his stout-hearted portrayal. MacRae stands out in Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, which some reviewers have considered one of the finest vocal performances of the 20th century. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones, who lends her tender voice and personality to her portrayal as Julie. Listen to the chemistry they exude during the pivotal If I Loved You duet, as if they're overcoming their shyness and drawing sustenance from each other with their love. The supporting cast also gives its all in performing their roles. Claramae Turner's hearty Nettie brims with sincerity, warmth and tenderness, and she leads a rousing rendition of June is Bustin' Out All Over and renders You'll Never Walk Alone touchingly. Barbara Ruick and Robert Rounseville are superb as Carrie and Mr. Snow, although I admit I would have liked a little more humour. I also admit I would have liked Cameron Mitchell as Jigger to sound more sinister, like Fisher Stevens did in the 1994 Broadway revival recording. But even as it is, everyone sings gloriously and is given sumptuous backing from Alfred Newman's superb arrangements and the 20th-Century Fox Orchestra, when it shines out in the ballets.

If I'm adding to the praise of these critic-proof performance, you'll wonder, why am I giving only 4 stars? Well, it's because the extra sound effects from the unreleased sequences tend to jar after a while. I know some of you are complaining that the dance sequences are plagued by extraneous sound effects and noise. I share the same feelings too and also wish that the producers had utilised the original studio pre-recordings for a sumptuous listening experience. However, let us at least be grateful that Didier Deutsch and his production team have made these unreleased sequences available on a soundtrack CD reissue. At least it's a step in the right direction before the entire canon of R&H film soundtracks (yes, including South Pacific and The Sound of Music) gets its due as deluxe 2-CD sets, complete with underscore.

However, don't let this gripe dissuade you from buying this soundtrack. It offers a complete musical experience that one could only dream of in the previous CD reissues of the soundtrack. And it demonstrates the element that Rodgers & Hammerstein were discovering in their musicals.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2007-01-04

Rogers and Hammerstein were in a different league when it came to writing musicals. Their music, lyrics and story are never alike. These two partners were exceptional and their music shows it. Carousel is a tragic story but also shows that human nature can rise above adversity. The music is wonderful and the characters believable. A great movie.

5 out of 5 stars Response to David Pabian's review below.......2004-06-30

Response to David Pabian's review:

My review was not in error, as Mr. Pabian expects. The review was for the original CD release, not this expanded version. Amazon lifted it out of that spot and dropped it here, which of course makes it anachronistic. Why they did it without reading it is certainly an inept decision.

3 out of 5 stars Gummed up an Original.......2003-06-10

This overblown "completeitis" has got to stop. The original soundtrack album Carousel Waltz is now relegated to Appendix status, and terrible sonics accompany dancers' footstomping in the "new" expanded musical sequences, taken directly from the soundtrack rather than from still-existing musical tracks. There was a reason soundtrack recordings were studio performances. The proportions were right, the timings were correct for an overall BALANCED listening experience. These gawdawful expanded editions, often with dialogue thrown in, completely throw off those balances. An argument might be made for expanded sequences appropriate to a CDs longer playing time than the standard L.P. 45min., but possibly only if those sequences are from their original studio-recorded, pre release-print mix -- which could have easily been done in this case. A quick word on one of the above reviews: This is not the first time the complete Carousel Waltz is heard in stereo. There were two previous CD remasterings of the original soundtrack whereon it was included. And the reprise of "If I loved You" was part of every soundtrack release, mono and stereo.

This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." This enhanced CD also features notes by the director and composer, as well as exclusive photos and the film's trailer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Haven't I heard this before?.......2007-06-20

As other reviewers will tell you yes this is another Horner machine made soundtrack. But it still sounds good! If you are a Horner fan by all means buy it otherwise "at your own risk"!

And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful score.......2007-02-09

James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.

Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Nash.

There is an angelic nature to the shape and texture of this music, one that is able to turn demonic as the story line requires. Both by brilliance and by dementia, Nash seems the object of external forces, rising with supreme heroism (at least in the film's version of events) to conquer. The music is there at each score, coaxing the viewer into empathic solidarity with this deeply troubled man and his long-suffering and preternaturally beautiful wife.

This is mood music of the deeply engaging variety. Its lush tonal landscape is achieved under the baton of the composer himself. The score's vast range of volume and expression would certainly have made it a joy to watch in performance.

Alas, we don't have that.

But we have this.

An ethereal, compelling, even gripping tone poem. Buy it.

Absolutely gorgeous - my husband keeps it in his car and listens to it whenever he's driving.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, lovely, majestic.......2006-04-04

The sound track for "A Beautiful Mind" stayed with me long after the movie. The CD has all the themes that made the movie so emotionally powerfull. James Horner, composer and conductor, perfectly matches the excitement of genius and the terror of mental disability. Charlotte Church's clear and gentle voice compliments the music and used instrumentally creates a haunting refrain. I loved the movie and this music is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Dark.......2006-02-20

This is one of the darkest and most emotional soundtrack, and yet it is filled with more inspiring songs.

4 out of 5 stars didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22

I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.

3 out of 5 stars Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20

If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.

Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.

5 out of 5 stars It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22

My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.

"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.

All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!

4 out of 5 stars a lost gem.......2004-10-14

i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.

1 out of 5 stars Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19

BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

I did not know I had to buy a special Cd player for this 16 dollar cd. They range from 300-500 dollers.

My bad. I guess I had to read the FINE PRINT.

bad description, especially when this cd format is not widely known.

1 out of 5 stars How Amazon screwed me this time.......2005-10-04

Amazon sent me some kind of funky CD "enhanced" version that did not play in a normal CD player. When I wrote about it some person made it very clear the it was my error -- I guess I should know that I am not very knowledgable. Of course they say that they will return it but they charged me for shipping. I know they will print this becuase they don't read anything that I send them. rob k in St. Thoams USVI

This soundtrack is like LOTR in that you can put it on in the background and play it over and over.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Very surprised it didn't win an Oscar.......2003-09-26

This soundtrack is one of the most powerful soundtracks I've ever listen to. I believe Howard Shore won an Oscar for his soundtrack to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring the same year that A Beautiful Mind came out... unfortunately, Horner was robbed that year, although I also too love Shore's score.

Horner opens with "A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics." It comepletely draws the listener, or watcher (if viewing the movie), in. The music literally sounds like a Kaleidoscope, as if one could litterally HEAR the different colors ... and yet not randomly, but in a cohesive mathimatical way. And then, approximately one and a half minutes into the piece, a sobering, more pensive movement, yet colored again with the interesting flurishes abundant in the first minute and a half.

I've never reviewed music before, but have been an avid listener to scores and soundtracks for years. This, along with the single piece from Castaway by Alan Silvestri, and both the scores from Empire of the Sun and Hook by John Williams, TOPS the list of all time favorites. Check 'em out!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Sound Quality.......2003-06-02

I saw this movie and was very impressed with it. Russel Crowe and Jennifer Connelly put on wonderful performances. Although one of the best parts of this movie is the haunting soundtrack. There is a bit of mathematical precision to the music and because of the multichannel aspect of the SACD, the room is filled with music. One of the things I like about this format is the fuzzyness of the music. You can hear the reverberations and things and they aren't cleaned out by the clipping. Given all the interplay on this soundtrack, this is probably the best format to hear it on.

As a title, One principally represents the body-mind-spirit cohesion aspired to in keyboardist Mark Ciaburri's slowly unfolding journey toward a state of sublime relaxation. It may also serve as a small pun, indicating the number of tracks found on this disc (and the number of recordings in this newcomer's discography). One is a nearly 67-minute, multi-instrumental bliss-out that also could have been appropriately titled Meditation Jam. First, Ciaburri electronically establishes the recording's underpinnings, a warm, gently glowing soundscape that hovers near the fringes of deep space. He then allows a host of accompanists--most prominently Bruce BecVar on acoustic guitar, plus others on cello, harp, oboe, English horn, flute, tabla, and voice--to add contemporary textures and benign, slow-motion abstractions, all with the intent of creating a sanctuary of sustained restfulness. It succeeds on most counts, though at times the disc seems busy, with instruments too often overlapping or crowding one another for prominence. Offering a little more openness, by extending spaces between notes or taking a more spare approach to instrumentation, might have turned a very good recording into a great one. Ciaburri's subtle use of voices (created by "The Angels Choir of Maui," a nod to where the disc was recorded) is particularly attractive. Massage and yoga enthusiasts, take note. --Terry Wood

Album Description

Music for meditation, massage, yoga or just being...

Remember when you've heard music so beautiful that it captured you, lifted you up, opened your heart and mind? Perhaps you were having a massage, doing yoga or just being silent but whatever you were doing, you wanted that music to continue. This is the music of One. Music to keep you there.

Over an hour of guitars, tablas, oboe, cello, tamboura, harp, English horn, voice and many other soft sounds woven together with no abrupt changes, the timing set to the gentle rhythm of the ocean.

5 out of 5 stars Calms My Day.......2006-02-25

This is a wonderful CD which I play constantly in my car. In busy rush hour traffic, both morning and evening, this music calms my mind and nourishes my soul. It is also great as a backdrop to my evening meditations.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Massage.......2005-08-29

One of the best in my massage practice collection...and one of the few I'd listen to at home as well.

It is great because, as the title says, it is One - One long, intricate, peaceful track. I'm very picky about my massage music, and much prefer accoustic instrumentation to synthesizers. I was sold on this CD when I heard the cello, and was further gratified upon listening to the entire piece, which incorporates so many different instruments.

Terrific! A definite YES - add it to your collection!

4 out of 5 stars Presentation of Real Music Artists Together.......2005-06-11

A very interesting presentation, One is one track, put together by various artists on the Real Music label. The talents of Bruce Becvar on acoustic guitar, Daniel Paul on tablas and tamboura, Ginny Morgan on cello and harp, Jazlyn Woods on oboe and English horn, John Zangrando on alto/bass flutes, Mark Ciaburri on keyboards and percussion and The Angeles Choir of Maui providing the vocals all blend together to produce one long piece of ambient streams.

The combination of instruments is unique, creating a crossroad somewhere between East and West, going back and forth, and sometimes blending perfectly. There does not appear to be an obvious melody, but rather the melodies vary, each progressing on the last, never sounding out of place but never sounding contrived.

The CD booklet carries the message the composition intends to convey: Don't just do something, sit there. - Osho

However, in listening to the piece, while intended for meditation, massage, yoga or other such pastime, I felt the composition should be listened to for the quality of the work, the blending of the styles and the beauty of the melodies and their progression. There is a calling in the piece, asking you to also consider the emotion that is conveyed. Yes, there is energy in this composition. It is restrained in some places, but allowed to surface and be felt in others.

There is a remarkable blending of different instruments in this composition. Guitar and cello, flute and oboe, harp and horn all against a background of tablas and tamboura and percussion. Each instrument has a chance to be heard, expertly played by each of the artists, and then they blend with another, coming together as one as a complete orchestra" to emerge again and be heard individually or with another instrument. It is a wall of sound softening to a single voice coming back to wrap you in the total experience again.

Softly, this could play in the background to whatever work you are doing. However, in a pair of headphones, this music can be a powerful experience. Turned up on your stereo this will fill a room with energy. It can sooth, it can distract. The soft harmonies lull you into a quiet place, only to have your ear pick up on a momentary melody or a poignant beat.

The artists are well known in the ambient community. Mark Ciaburri is the composer of this piece. His time spent with Indian teachers and the various musical influences of the 60s are evident in this composition. His own musical background flavors the work, with touches of jazz and
classical mixed into the hour of music.

But without the varied talents of Bruce Becvar, Ginny Morgan, Jazlyn Woods, John Zangrando or Daniel Paul, this could have come out sounding like so much blended noise. This is a tribute to their remarkable talents to interpret the piece so expertly and not end up with so much mush
which it could easily have digressed to. And The Angles Choir of Maui blends so well with the composition that they emerge quietly, allowing you to suddenly notice them and then they vanish, to resurface again to the delight of the listener.

While intended for quiet work, this piece contains more energy than that and deserves to be placed up front to be appreciated rather than take for granted. While it may be meditative in nature, it is more so for the artist than the listener. This is more a piece to be listened to and
enjoyed.

But whatever you do with it, it will be happily added to your collection of ambient/world music to be enjoyed again and again. This is a very lovely presentation of the composition skills of Mark Ciaburri and the talents of some very remarkable artists. mafoster

4 out of 5 stars Prospect Park/Brighton Beach Dreams........2005-05-20

This performance transcends the mediocrity of over sanitized over rehearsed recordings that are canned in impulse shopping points. This is real, free flowing stuff. Music to come back to again and again is a good thing. There's an edge here that we can't find from trendy musician origins i.e. Hollywood, Santa Fe, Tucson, Sedona, etc. This CD will help to turn on the Mind and refresh the spirit. Me thinks Mr. Leary will agree.
Sincerely yours,
William Velovich

Album Description

From "Orlando" to "The Tango Lesson" and onward, director Sally Potter has always been closely involved with the soundtracks to her films--with outstanding results. This score for "Yes" is no different, as it weaves diverse music--including Philip Glass, Gustavo Santaolalla, Kronos Quartet, "Fawn" (by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan), and Eric Clapton with BB King--into both a superb tapestry for this motion picture and as a compelling listening experience on its own.

Further original music by Sally Potter was made with the participation of long-term collaborator, the celebrated guitarist, composer and improviser Fred Frith, who has played on Sally's last four films. Frith has composed for Ensemble Modern and Asko Ensemble amongst others. Best known world-wide as an improvising guitarist, he played on albums ranging from The Residents and Reni Lussier to Brian Eno and Amy Denio.

4 out of 5 stars An aural journey through diverse cultures.......2005-06-28

Quite an eclectic mix of artists and music. I am not sure this CD is for everyone...

From hypnotic instrumentals to howling blues to middle eastern influenced dances to chill dance grooves to classical piano to latin salsa, the soundtrack takes you on an aural journey through diverse cultures. I'm sure it reflects the culture clash depicted in the movie's storyline.

Listening to the sample tracks (at Barnes & Noble.com) makes me wish that I lived in a more culturally diverse area... This is the type of movie I have to watch on DVD because theaters won't risk showing independent films here.

To find the sample tracks at B&N search for "Yes" as the title, then sort the results by "date released". Since it just came out, it should be near the top of the list. Enjoy.

BTW, my 4-star rating is based only on the sample tracks I was able to hear.

5 out of 5 stars WOW Where have these guys been?.......2004-01-08

This whole album is awesome. Great tracks throughout! I simply can't believe that I had never heard these guys on the radio before. I heard about these guys from the "monster.com" commercial some years ago. Now I let all my friends borrow the cd now, and they love it too.

5 out of 5 stars Tugboat Annie Power Pop Makes You Want More.......2002-07-03

In 'The Space Around You', Tugboat Annie has assembled a wonderful power-pop jaunt which keeps you interested from beginning to end. Never straying too far from their basic guitar crunch and melody mix, the band zips through 10 solid tracks which had me smiling the whole way. It is fun music. Period. The writing is clean and creative, but keeps to simple relationship-based lyrics which paint with a broad brush that allows the listener to interpret as he will, or just simply listen and enjoy. While not breaking any new ground, the sound reflections of Oasis/Third Eye Blind/Weezer may be similar, but Tugboat Annie accomplishes what those bands couldn't - to keep me interested through every song and left me wanting MORE. PLEASE RECORD ANOTHER ALBUM SOON! (Kudos to Monster.Com commercial for not letting this album slip away unnoticed...)

4 out of 5 stars Good tunes.......2001-07-12

This cd is quite good. There are several highlight tracks including my favorites Love, Explanations, and Don't Stop Holding Out Your Hands. The music is good and the listen is excellent all the way. Not quite worth the five star mark, but worth the money. If you like Tugboat Annie check out 6 going on 7.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD!.......2000-12-22

I will go out on a limb here and say right now that if this band will get some airplay and some publicity, they will be huge.

Let me explain where this review is coming from. I have very eclectic tastes. I listen to and enjoy just about every style of music from Mozart to Metallica, from Bluegrass to Blues. I don't care that much for most rap music, but hey...to each his own. Favorite bands would include U2, R.E.M., Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Black Crowes, Sixpence None the Richer, Dave Matthews, Rush, and so on. I have hundreds of CDs of all styles of music.

"The Space Around You" by Tugboat Annie is one of the top 5 or 10 best rock CDs I have. If you are a Tugboat Annie fan and you don't already have this CD, let me assure you that it is on a different level compared to their other releases. If you are not a Tugboat Annie fan, you need to listen to this CD. This is one of the few CDs that both my wife and I agree is great. In fact everyone I've shared it with has been very impressed.

I don't know how best to describe Tugboat Annie's sound because they have their own. The closest description I can think of is to compare them with some early R.E.M. such as that found on "Reckoning" only a little bit heavier.

To the songs:

STOP - This song kicks a** A great melodious-rock introduction to the CD. You WILL find yourself hitting repeat before you move on to track 2.

THE WISHING SONG - The fastest tempo song on the CD. Good driving to the beach to go surfing song. I defy you to listen without playing drums on your steering wheel.

TELL ME - Another strong melody. One of those songs that grows on you each time you listen.

LOVE - I love the first few bars of this one. Another one you have to hear to understand.

HELEN OF TROY - This song has taken the longest to grow on me, perhaps because I couldn't figure out the lyrics. Oh well, still better than 95% of what is on the radio today. One of the three mellowest songs on the CD.

EXPLANATIONS - The song I heard on the radio that made me say, "Who are these guys? I hafta have this CD!" Another great song!

MORE - I keep waiting for a weak song that I want to skip. Doesn't happen. Still going strong.

OFF THE GROUND - Mellow time.

AWAY - Second to last song, and I still haven't heard a clunker.

DON'T STOP HOLDING OUT YOUR HANDS - When this song started it reminded me immediately of what Pink Floyd might have sounded like if they weren't manic depressives. Cool song.

If you like straight ahead rock and roll, this is an album you need to buy. It gets better with each listen. Someone get these guys some publicity!! Saturday Night Live, Letterman, Leno, anybody!!

5 out of 5 stars This Band Keeps Growing.......2000-06-10

This is another ten solid tracks from a band I first witnessed at a loft party in Buffalo during another lifetime. Good on first listen, but after the fourth spin all the hooks and nuances come through. If the last track "Dont Stop Holding Out" doesn't become a radio staple across the land then all station programmers should be marched into the Boston Harbor.

'A Chosen One' features 17 rad gangsta-style tracks, which were barely fit onto one disc. Hiring Brian "Mr. Real" Hill onto the grapetree record label was grapetree president Knolly William's best move ever! The best tracks are 'World Wide', 'We Bring Tha', and 'Do Yo Dance'.
