While Public Enemy and the Ultramagnetic MCs were bringing the noise, the duo of Guru and DJ Premier were enrolling for jazz classes under the name Gang Starr. No More Mr. Nice Guy, their debut, is ironically the closest Gang Starr ever came to perfecting their style. They use the requisite James Brown samples (on "Gotch U" and "Manifest") but add jazz piano and upright bass over smooth rap lyrics. It works because the jazz style creates a unique, organic texture that never loses its flavor. It also works because DJ Premier is a force to be reckoned with (the classic DJ cut "DJ Premier in Deep Concentration" name-checks hip-hop contemporaries like Rakim, scratched out over the sweet piano of Kool and the Gang's "Summertime"). Definitely a new-school classic. --Todd Levin

Monty Python have got nothing on Pat Boone. You want absurd, this is the pinnacle. No comedy writer in his/her dreams could have dreamt up anything even half as stupid. The mere idea of Pat Boone, Mr. Squeaky Clean himself, (ahem) crooning heavy metal tunes is bad enough, but it gets so much worse. Big name arrangers were brought in to take crunchy power chords and squealing guitar solos and turn them into jazzy riffs and big band horn blasts. Even a few of the artists whose material is covered make guest appearances. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore plugs in on "Smoke on the Water," while vocalist Ronnie James Dio gives a shout out on his band's "Holy Diver." This musical "idiodyssey" actually works a few times. I'm not immune to the kitsch value that the swingin' versions of AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)," Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary," or Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" provide. These songs almost sound like they were written for this kind of overblown, slick swing. Very scary. As for the rest, well, let's just say that aside from the fact that they don't really work too well in this format, Boone just ends up sort of speaking the lyrics and sounding completely goofy. If that's not comedy enough for you, surely the extensive liner notes explaining (rationalizing?) why Boone felt the need to make this record are the topper. I liked this guy a lot better when he was pals with the Parents' Music Resource Center. Can't wait for In a Grunge Mood--sometime in the 21st century. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars Hysterical!.......2007-04-16

This is a must-have for any music collector! Pat Boone does his own take on popular metal songs and the result is a surpringly entertaining CD. What's fun is to pop it in during a party and watch everyone get this confused look on their faces, then go, "Good lord! Who IS this???" Before he gets to the first chorus, everyone is singing along. Boone does not take himself too seriously and isn't honestly attempting to recreate the song, but to "interpret it" in his own style. It will take you a second to recognize songs that you've heard a million times. A totally fun CD!

1 out of 5 stars My ears, oh no, my ears!.......2007-02-07

This presentation of Mr. Boone's deserves a 1 for effort, a 5 for the best bad thing I've ever heard. He made of mess of Little Richard's "Tutti Fruitti" way back when. So, in keeping with such destruction, he went after our precious metal hits. Funny stuff, though. I keep thinking of the those sad off the strip casino bands trying to entertain folks who just want a $1.99 breakfast and a win at the nickel machines.

5 out of 5 stars Horns High! Metal Approved!.......2006-12-22

I am a fan of most of the original tunes covered on this CD. Half of them I know in guitar beginning to end and jam on them with my band. Like others I laughed quite a bit listening to this, but not because it is bad, because it is good and they work. Obviously, it's a tongue in cheek recording and if you have to have a sense of humor to enjoy it but it certainly is not a joke recording.

No need to hide behind hipster irony like 'so bad it's good.' I'll take lounge crooners over hip-hop, rap, indie rock, teen queens, etc. any day.

5 out of 5 stars God-awful and a must-hear for every metal head.......2006-12-01

This is beyond bad, beyond atrocious, beyond -- words fail me. It is impossible to describe, other than to say that it's metal like you never heard before and hope never to hear again. It's metal that your mother would like - that's how bad it is. And yet, it's utterly compelling. No head-banging, long-haird, stuck-in-the-70's metalhead should miss this CD. I mean, Dio duets with Pat Boone - is that a disturbance in the Force, or what? Like an auditory train wreck, you really won't be able to tear your ears away from it (at least the first time). And then you can give it to your very sweet 80-year-old mom.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Surprise .......2006-08-18

This cd by Pat Boone should be listened to with an open mind and sense of humor. It's great to hear these hard rock songs done in a "swing" style - something no one thought of before. And it works! My favorites are Holy Diver and You Got Another Thing Coming. If nothing else, Pat shows he can still sing great and he's still creative. Surprisingly so on this cd. Thanks Pat for the curve ball you threw our way! - Mark from Milwaukee

5 out of 5 stars "The begining of a new Hip-Hop legacy"!.......2005-09-04

The name GANG-STARR is synonimous with Hip-Hop any where in the world you might go. In 1989, a Bean Town born/B'klyn blessed MC "manifested" over a dope DJ Premier track, some funky rhymes with a trademark voice. This would mark the begining of a new Hip-Hop dynasty that's still in full effect to this day. GANG-STARR , through out the years, has put out classic after classic after classic! And this is their first one. Expect nothing less than banging beats and an ill flow from this incredible duo. This CD edit. contains extra tracks not found on the original '89 pressing on wax and cassette. This is 100% grass-roots Hip-Hop for your enjoyment. No ignorant thug, BS, Rims, platinum crap. Just plain ol' good Hip-Hop for your ear.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated & Forgotten Classic.......2005-07-24

This is where Guru and Premier's legacy began. This is a demonstration Gang Starr finding their sound and formulating their well respected chemistry. The jazz sound on this album would eventually pass on through their next two classic albums. This is a must have for alternative hip hops fans and those who are just beginning to discover Gang Starr's consistent and masterful collection of music. Don't sleep on one of hip hop's best duos.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-02-01

You must be from another dimension if you are comparing this to MC Hammer. This album defines classic, jazzy, socially positive rap. Stop hitting the crack pipe. If you are going to compare it to anything, how about A Tribe Called Quest and KRS One. And Kid 'N Play were pretty good, even Big Daddy Kane gives them the thumbs up. Their cartoons, movies, comic books, etc. have no bearing on the albums. They are classic stuff. Like 3rd Bass, they still get hated on by people who have no clue. And almost every hip hop act back then had dancers. That was a definant part of the culture before gangsta rap took over and slightly fudged up things. Anyways, this album is perfection. Guru drops knowledge with crazy skill over some very funky Priemo beats utilizing classic samples. A hip hop album like this will never be made again, don't pass it up. I put it right up there along side Step Into the Arena and Daily Operation. Don't sleep, this is not a 3 star album!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Judge By The Cover for a change........2005-01-08

I hate to say it, I'm adicted to Gang Starr! I have my there dicovery stacked next to my Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, and Mr. Lif collection. I don't think about clubbin', I think about women often, but don't want women and love in my head and ears all day. I'd like to say that I prefer to keep my mind busy being creative, and wise as much as possible, thus I cling to these old concious beats, as well as ID centered musick such as Pink Floyd, The Residents, Skinny Puppy, Devo, Tear Garden, etc.
So for this album, I was pleased on the concious level, great lyrics, but as you can prolly tell from it's cover, it was released in the era of Kid & Play, MC Hammer, Technotronic, Vanilla Ice, etc. Which to me is the separation of Hip-Hop and Rap, infact the birth of Rap, and perhaps an early form of popified Hip-Hop.
Of course this album does not go as far into the gay realm as Kid & Play and the other before mentioneds, but it still is no wear as cool as all there other later releases which are pretty much flawless.

Note for the neo-phites: Only buy as a last album if you are collecting!!!! Unless of course you are hard core into Hammer in which case, ignore the rest of the collection, and stick with this. :)

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars I CAN'T BELIEVE NASHVILLE LET HIM DO IT!!!!.......1999-08-08

If you think Nashville music is all made up of insipid under-three-minute-up-tempo-positive-just-like-what-was-number-one-last-week pablum, WELL, here's a surprise for you! This is Steve Wariner doing what he does best - and making all would-be guitarists consider using the Takamine for firewood. Songwriter/keyboardist/genius Randy Goodrum's influence is all over this nearly-all-instrumental showcase. Steve brought in Vince Gill, Chet Atkins, Mark O'Connor,Bela Fleck, Leo Kottke, Leroy Parnell, and Richie Sambora...it is like the ULTIMATE guitar round!! Only one track suffers the indignation of Nashville influence... where some of the young guns attempt to keep up with this pace (if that's Bryan White playing drums - then, it's a good thing he can sing!) You will play this CD over and over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars A Real soundtrack that Rocks! Shocker is a 1989 classic!.......2005-03-01

This is one soundtrack that packs a punch.Unlike today's music, this soundtrack really rocks! Proving once again that the 80's had the best music. This is a great metal/hair/rock album.
1.Shocker(10/10)The title track kicks major ass.Paul Stanly(of kiss)on vocals, Vivian Campbell(of Dio and Whitesnake)on guitar, Rudy Sarzo(of M.A.R.S. and Whitesnake)on Bass, and Tommy Lee(Motley Crue)on drums. This song will blow you away.
2.Love Transfusion(10/10)Another great metal song.Iggy Pop on vocals, Guy Mann Dude and John McCurry on guitars among many others involved.
3.No More Mr Nice Guy(1/10)Megadeath sucks on this one.Megadeath ruined this song.Horrible job.Their a good band on their own, but they're suckin all over the place on this one.Shame on you Megadeath!
4.Sword and Stone(9/10)great song performed by Bonfire.Excellent job. This one was written by Bruce Kulick(of Kiss).
5.Timeless Love(9/10)A great love ballad. If you want a ballad dine right 80's style this is a good one!Performed by Saraya. They do a fine job.Their first self titled release is worth buying. This song is just a sample of what the can do.
6.Shockdance(4/10)Pretty bad song, but it is so bad it's actually funny to listen to because of the rap(Pinker he's a stinker)Ha Ha Ha!Alice Cooper does the vocal work!
7.Demon Bell(10/10)This is the best song Dangerous Toys ever performed.A killer tune.Love the Guitar riffs!
        8.The Awakening(6/10)Not a bad song.Pretty decent metal tune performed by Voodoo X.
9.Different Breed(3/10)Pretty horrible song by this loser band called Dead On.More like Dead End which is what they came to!
10.Shocker(reprise)7/10)Continuation of te chorus line at the end of the first song.

        5 out of 5 stars Super soundtrack!.......2004-10-19

One of the greatest 80's metal soundtracks ever! The main theme "shocker" is absolutely rockin'!!! Also the old song "no more mr. nice guy" sang by Megadeth is much better than the original version... Too bad they haven't brought this album out again... It's a must for every metal fan!

4 out of 5 stars For a soundtrack not bad.......2003-12-13

I got this when it first came out. The highlight for me on this
is the song, The Awakening by a band called Voodoo X. Very, Very Cool Tune. Another stand out is Sword and Stone by Bonfire, Demon Bell by Dangerous Toys. The title track has some various artist on it. Definately a good cd if you like the 80's metal scene, as i do. But definately check out The Awakening by Voodoo X.
