Part GREAT, part WEAK.......2006-11-26
This review needs to be compartmentalized: 6 stars for the first track, "Children of the Sun", a genuine acid-rock CLASSIC which I totally love and which I think is one of the coolest tunes EVER. 4 stars for tracks 2-6, which are very interesting tunes that fans of progressive and psychedelic music from that time period will certainly enjoy. 2 stars for tracks 7-13 which are throw-away add-ons that bare almost no resemblence to the first six tracks. This CD could have (and should have) been a great EP.
Misunderstood - 'Before The Dream Faded' (Cherry Red) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-07-09
Recorded in 1966,but not released until umteen years later(or so it appears).Great garage / psych piece of work from another short-lived;1963-1969, yet under appreciated band. Most impressive tracks were "Children Of The Sun","My Mind",the semi-trippy "I Can Take You To The Sun" and "Who's Been Talking".Line-up:Tony Hill(of High Tide)-guitar&vocals,Rick Brown-harmonica&vocals,Glen Ross Campbell-steel guitar,Steve Whitway-bass and Rick Moe-drums.Should appeal to fans of The Creation,Pretty Things,Chocolate Watchband,The Seeds,Count Five and The Move.An absolute should-have.
I just have one song to rave about here. .......2005-11-27
"I can take you to the sun" is a song definitely ahead of it's time. I remember hearing it for the first time in 1994, and it is like Alice going into Wonderland, and having to go through all those doors to eat and drink the stuff she does to grow small, and get tall again. It begins with a very nice fuzzy guitar rave, and climaxes, and then you're thrown into another world of the group's underbelly when they shift gears, and go completely acoustic. Don't play at 3 in the morning...especially if you work in a nursing home like I did that summer of 94. This was actually released in the spring of 1966 shortly after The Misunderstood left San Francisco, and migrated to England. Imagine if the group stayed put, and they released this in the states. The impact it would've had, and quite possibly some notority after all 6 months later The Grateful Dead did their infamous Acid Test at UCLA. Oh well. The rest of this cd has some promise, but remember guys "I HATE HARMONICAS!!!".
great music.......2005-08-25
i'm into the psychedelic era from the 60's because that music or genre was as a great way to explore many sounds that really changed an era!!, and right now i'm discovering so many bands that really never got justice, the misunderstood was a good band, and every time i have the chance to recomend good music to any one they're always on top of my list, also how cool is to read a review from a former member!!!! that was a nice surprise!!! It's important for rock fans in general ( especially classic rock fans) to keep discovering great bands like this one!!!! keep rockin'
The Misunderstood: They Could Have Been A Condender.......2005-02-11
"Before the Dream Faded" may be the closest thing to the Dead Sea Scrolls for devotees of early psychedelic music and garage rock. "Before the Dream Faded" is a rare document of a marginally famous band that was at ground zero of the underground music movement. It's a shame that Amazon doesn't include "Before the Dream Faded" on their list of Essential Rock and Roll CDs. The lack of recognition the Misunderstood from rock critics with a shallow knowledge of rock and roll shows that "misunderstood" has evolved into an almost prophetic name for this great band.
The expert playing and musical finesse of the Misunderstood made the garage band label a misnomer The Misunderstood had a bluesy psychedelic sound well in front big guns of UK Sixties psychedelica, like Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and even the Yardbirds. The Misunderstood's music was a Molotov cocktail mixed with equal parts raw blues and mind bending psychedelic guitar. One need only to listen to the Misunderstood to find the point of inspiration for Jeff Beck when he'd play his ear splitting, guitar shattering "rave-ups" with the Yardbirds.
Glen Ross Campbell (not the "Witchta Lineman" dude) was an expert guitarist who doubled on steel guitar. The addition of UK guitarist Tony Hill when the Misunderstood moved to London in '66 gave the band a full throttle guitar sound. Steve Whiting on bass and Rick Moe on drums provided a muscular rhythm section that gave the Misunderstood a sound as powerful as a roundhouse punch.
I was encouraged to read the review of Steve Whiting (see Spotlight Reviews) the original bass player for the Misunderstood. I'm always amazed that musicians like Steve Whiting keep the faith after getting shafted by fast buck moguls and producers who run the business end of music. Steve is absolutely right ....any recorded material by Glen Ross Campbell under the guise of the Misunderstood is inferior to by the original band. This album, "Before the Dream Faded", contains all the tracks associated with the Misunderstood's 24 karat gold legacy.

Delays singer-guitarist Greg Gilbert has such an incredible voice that he might be the only man in rock who has drawn comparisons to both Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks and the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser. That's just the first sign that this English band is not just another standard-issue moody Coldplay knockoff. Instead, the music on its debut album conjures the blissed-out guitar-and-grooves sound of classic English groups like the Stone Roses and the La's, with each of the three opening songs delivering devastating knockouts. The rest of the disc doesn't easily repeat the feat but the band's exuberant spirit easily carries through. -- Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
took me a while, but i got there in the end !!.......2006-02-23
my friend used to play this album constantly as we took long four hour drives to her parents house...and even over our chatting i couldnt help but pick up on the catchy melodies and interesting vocal harmonies...yeh amazing there are no females voices
as many have said in their reviews here the first three songs do grab you instantly, but are they the strongest on the album ?...18 months ago i'd have said definately...but after buying the album for myself and incessant playing of it now im not so sure, the others really do grow on you, for me its strong all the way through....
as with any band that produces such a killer debut album there's a huge pressure to continue that success with their second attempt and sadly many bands fail...well, they've just released a new single here in England called Valentine and its superb, im off to see them live in three days time and im anxious to hear their new material....hopefully they'll produce the goods again and the next album with recieve just as many if not more glowing reviews...fingers crossed :-)
etheral rock.......2005-09-29
i am so tempted to give this record 5 stars, but i'll have to settle with four (for now). when i first heard this album, it did not grab me at all. it just went over my head. i'm not sure why. the songs are great, the singer has a very very distinct and beautiful voice, and the instrumentation is lush and creative...maybe almost too creative for it's own good at times. there are pop hooks a'plenty on this album...but they are cleverly buried amongst the layers of chiming bells, haunting keyboards, and heavenly vocals. sometimes the production doesn't allow the sharp beauty of these elements to properly stand out at first; but i can guarentee with repeated exposure, you'll find yourself listening closer with each spin. "Hey Girl" is probably the standout single on here (due to it's masterful simplicity), but "You Wear The Sun" and "Bedroom Scene" are much more challenging songs and the better for it. the Delays are like the Byrds crossed with the Cocteau Twins. harmonies of heavenly angels and etheral rock that is really like none other. certainly worth investigation.
Thank you, Blender Magazine, for turning me onto this band.......2005-04-14
I'm not going to dazzle you with smart "rock-critic" witticisms or band comparisons ... just tell you that this sound kicks (...).
The awesome thing about them is that a lot of their B-sides (only available on the import singles ... or 'net d/l) are at least as good or BETTER than their album tracks! A few of THOSE that stood out to me (and it would be worth your time to seek them out) are Quiet, Zero Zero One, Overlover, Safety in Numbers, Way Smooth ...
If you're getting burned out on all the garbage music in the world ... give this a shot. And this, coming from a guy who normally listens to music mixed/made with two Technics 1200s.
a rare, amazing album.......2005-03-23
it's been a long time since i've randomly listened to the radio and just had my soul grabbed by a song. and it's been even longer since i've bought an album that has done the same. when i heard delays 'stay where you are' on 97x (www.woxy.com) a few months ago, i had to stop everything i was doing and just listen. the harmonies, the heavenly, jangly pop sound... it was awesome. and somehow i had this feeling that the rest of the album would be similar. from the first notes of the steel drums on 'wanderlust' to the ending harmonies of 'on,' the entire cd had me absolutely spell bound. it still does.
yes, as previous reviewers have noted, the first three tracks are strong. but i'd also include 'stay where you are' and 'on' in the strong tracks category. some tracks are more upbeat than others, but that's cool with me as the sound of the entire album is so consistently beautiful that i think it works whether happy or sad.
buy this album. it's beautiful. it resonates with every sad longing for a return to innocence, every desire to go somewhere more enticing and exotic than where you are right now. so cheesy, i know, but it's like a soundtrack for your soul.
Good, but not Great Debut.......2005-02-15
This summery record took me a bit by surprise when I first heard it. Wanderlust, a cracking opener for the album, made me buy it without listening to the rest. However, where Wanderlust, Long Time Coming, and Hey Girl leave the listener feeling up-beat, with a bounce in their step, somehow the majority of the rest of the album doesn't quite fulfill the potential offered by these songs. Yes, they're still fairly chirpy, but they lack something; that extra kick. The latter part of the album is pretty much missable, which is a shame becase Delays (they hate having a "the" put before their name, even though it blatantly requires one!) show a massive amount of potential. I'm looking forward to hearing the follow-up.
Also, if you like this kind of music, you may want to check out bands such as Geneva and Puressence - similar vocal and song structures (although possibly not quite as happy and bouncy).

A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06
I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.
What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30
John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!
Excellent!.......2002-08-30
This cd is excellent! I reccomend it to everyone!! Jonathon English has got an amazing voice!
What A Blast - A Fun and Inspiring CD.......2002-07-30
I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.

HUGE Chili Pepper Fan.......2006-12-14
I enjoy this album very much. I am a RHCP fanatic although sometimes I am in the mood for light relaxing music and this fits perfectly. So, I get to enjoy the best of both worlds with this excellent tribute to their work. Might I add that Under the Bridge is beautifully composed here, and is my favorite track of all time and on this album as well.
Not-so-loud Chili Peppers' songs.......2006-10-30
First and foremost, The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a hard rock band. Nobody is going to buy this album in order to hear the Chili Peppers- that would be stupidity. There are only two reasons anybody would purchase this album:
1. You love the Chili Peppers' music and You want a change of pace.
2. You love listening to string instruments (such as the violin).
Buy this album if you love the Chili Peppers' music and you love strings. That sounds like a no-brainer...
enjoyable.......2005-03-10
I realy happend to enjoy this CD. I just bought it recently and every time i listen to it i feel like its the real thing because its so similar. I Love just relaxing to this cd. I think it is worth hearing.
Just my opinion.........2005-01-19
..but I just feel indifferent about this CD. I bought it thinking it would be an orchestrated-type stuff, which it is but I was hoping for something I could relax to. Whenever I hear the music in this CD, I think of weddings. Don't get me wrong, it's a good CD, but just not what I was expecting (which was a more relaxing kind of orchestration).
oh man.......2004-06-29
i bought this cd when i went looking for the last elusive cd that was missing from my rhcp collection(freaky styley, you should buy that one too)...i ended up walking out with this one as well and i rocked it all the way home with my windows open. this isn't an orchestral arrangement, it is a true to the original quartet: every solo, (almost) every fill, and every vocal que is present. The basslines jump from Persiani's prodigious upright (bass) and u can almost picture flea bouncing around. this work brought a whole new breadth and life to th emusic that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end; and for that, i applaud the string quartet.

Don't listen to this other guy.......2007-06-18
I can't believe anyone could call this album terrible and anyone who does should think about having their head candled cause there's definitely some kind of wax build up preventing you from hearing the shear beauty of this record. I feel like every time I listen to it that I'm transported to another world. Sorry I didn't mean to disregard someone else's opinion (you are certainly entitled to it) but I couldn't have an album as magical as this one represented by only two stars either because it's so much more than that!
Don't bother.......2007-02-19

Blues, Rock, Pop fusion.......2005-09-11
David Mullen is better known these days as Nicole C. Mullen's husband. Back in the day, he had his own career. His music could not be different from his wife's.
His gritty vocals, in the vein of The Boss, Bryan Adams and John Mellencamp, stand out especially on this album. On After The Hurricane and To Be With You, he shows a softer, melodic side. On Under The Same Sun and Libby he showcases his power and ability to growl on tune.
This album is great for someone who, like me, doesn't like to hear song after song that sounds exactly the same. The songs range from soft ballads, to the 70s retro sounding Papa, to the strait up rock-n-roll of Faded Blues all infused with a lot of blues influence.
This is one you can listen to again and again without tiring of it.
