5 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent CD.......2007-07-10

I bought this CD for one song and am blown away by how awesome the whole thing is. Cannot wait to hear more from them.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-05

Had not heard of them until I saw them play locally with one of my favorite artists a couple years ago. As soon as they began playing, my feet were tapping along. I soon realized my friends were also tapping with the music, yet none of us had heard the songs before. I bought the CD that night and listen to it all the time (I have the original print of this CD). I love all of the songs but my favorite is "Endless Conversations." If you have not seen them live, you should--they're even better than on the disc, which doesn't seem possible. I saw them a second time when they opened for O.A.R. which was awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound - Great Songs.......2007-04-14

I don't know much about these guys, but I like their sound and they know how to write songs. A very enjoyable CD that I listen to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Doctorate.............2007-04-05

This new CD is outstanding...It was recommeded to me because I'm a lifelong fan of Paul Kelley out of Australia: but, these two groups are not similar other than both being incredibly talented musician/singer/songwriters. I do, however, hear waves of ZZ Top, and the John Butler Trio floating in the breeze and hanging in the notes..... Excellent rock and roll, fabulous instrumental mantras and beautiful harmonies drifting in the slower romantic songs..... Truly, a well rounded festival of talent...Don't miss this CD folks, they don't come this good, too often.....My regards to the Band. GOOD SHOW !!!!! Cheers, Kiwi

5 out of 5 stars Good and Recommended and New - The Alternate Routes' new CD.......2007-04-03

This is a fantastic new album. I think The Alternate Routes combine a little of an alternative, pop-style melody and lyrics that I like about Toad the Wet Sprocket while offering the same guitar-driven sound of Aqua Lung. It's hard to pick a favorite tune because I like every song on this CD, but the lead track, "Ordinary," "Time Is A Runaway," and "Please Don't Let It Be" stand out to me as incredibly good. Good and Reckless and True is music with a great beat, great accoustic and electric guitar work against excellent lyrics. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure, but still a classic........2007-01-03

Yup, it was summer of 1984 (not '69). And this album pretty much had one hit after another. "It's Only Love" with Tina Turner rocks your socks off. Even the ballads are cool. Prior to this, "Cuts Like a Knife" was all I really knew of Bryan Adams. But this album is the pinnacle of his career. And always will be, for 10 good reasons: the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album - Found a new band to listen to.......2006-06-11

Being that I hear most of the music i like from dad and the radio I tend to give most albums he has a listen to, just to see what i think.

Gotta say this is a great rock album, lots of catchy tunes and some nice guitar riffs all throughout this one.

My fav song on the album is summer of 69, i love the lyrics on that one alot.

Anyone that likes good rock tunes with a nice upbeat rythem to them should defintely give this one a listen to, you won't be dissapointed

5 out of 5 stars ...classic Bryan Adams to the core.......2006-04-13

Reckless was one of the albums I remember buying myself on vinyl at the age of 7 when it was released in 1984.

This is classic Bryan Adams to the core. His finest songs are here including 6 US Top 40 hits: the dark and elusive Run To You and One Night Love Affair, the sweet Number 1 hit ballad Heaven, the fan favorite and stadium rocker Somebody, the Tina Turner duet It's Only Love, and, my personal favorite, the nostalgic Summer Of '69 (which still sounds awesome blasting out of your car speakers 20 years on and counting).

Bryan went on to write similar easy-listening rock tunes on his following albums, preserving his image as a 'kid' rocker in the process (hence 1996's 18 Til I Die). But nothing comes close to the glory of the summer...the summer of '84!

5 out of 5 stars Bryan Adams cream of the crop........2005-05-03

This is undoubtediy his most popular album (with 1991's Waking
up the neighbours in 2 place. This has all the best songs of his
1980's career. It has the power ballad Heaven, which was his first #1 single. It has the rocking side with Run to you, Summer
of '69, and Kids wanna rock. He also sings duet with Tina Turner
on It's only love. I really wish he would try to recapture the
essence of this time, instead of the work he's putting out now.
If you only buy one B.A. album. Make it this one.

Rockin' and eclectic, this Austin quintet aims to brighten honky-tonk nights with their fifth album, Wicked Twisted Road. Sure, there's a sense of regret in the opening title track and "Dogtown"--mostly for squandered youth and aspirations--but Celtic fiddle lines and singer Willie Braun's lilting melody makes the tour story "Seven Nights in Eire" a genuine pub song, and "Motel Cowboy Show" celebrates all-night boozin' and lovin' with hot pickin' and a rollicking drum beat. A revving motorcycle kicks off the bad -boy-on-the-run stomp "Sixgun." And there are bad girls, too, like the cruel lover who's "bitter and sweet as a death-row meal" in "Nobody Haunts Me Like You." There's also no shortage of big guitars, growling through half of these numbers and happily rubbing up against the spiky blues harmonica of the post-breakup slammer "Wretched Again." The album winds down with a lovely acoustic instrumental version of the title track--proof that even a wicked twisted road dotted with robberies, heartbreak, and drunkenness can turn back home, peacefully, again. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Reckless Kelly Rocks My World .......2006-08-28

A friend of mine (now my fiance!) turned me onto Reckless Kelly about three years ago. What started out as borrowing one CD quickly transformed into me buying all their CDs at a concert in Atlanta. Unfortunately, Willie and the boys don't make it to Georgia nearly often enough for our tastes... but in between gigs, this CD has a regular home in my car stereo.

I seriously think that Reckless Kelly is one of the best bands ever! They are definitely at the top of the alt.country heap, that's for certain!

Great musicians, all of them... fun/great lyrics... awesome live shows. Absolutely one of my top five albums. I may even walk down the aisle to the reprise of Wicked Twisted Road. Gotta see if I can convince the Catholic priest to let me play it in the church!

5 out of 5 stars Irish meets Texas.......2006-05-10

Willie Braun's vocal is rich and smooth, much like a certain rem singer. The guitars, fiddle and much of a vocal has a strong Gaelic flavor. Add to that the complex arrangements, the Texas independent spirit in concert with the beauty of Willie's singing and you will buy all RK's music as I have. Wicked Twisted Road is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band, Great CD........2005-09-07

Doesn't get much better than this folks. If you're into americana, roots-rock, or alt-country, or if simply like good music, I just can't imagine you not liking this. Highlights for me are the title track, "Dogtown", and "Baby's Got a Whole Lot More", but there's not a bad song on here. Can't beat the awesome packaging, either- they even included a board game (see website for drinking rules). Don't pass this one up. Check out their incredible previous album, too, and also their younger brothers' band called Micky and the Motorcars.

5 out of 5 stars wicked,but not twisted music!.......2005-06-11

I can't take this disc out of my player! it's one of the best in a long time and it proves that Gram Parsons still influences todays country music! well, this album has just about everything you could want, intelligent lyrics, expert musicianship and songs that run the gammit, Irish to an all out rocker!, not a weak song on the disc! it's a new album and I can't wait for a new one! hurry please!

As is true with so many roots-rocking bands based in Austin, Texas, a sweaty club brings out the rambunctious best in Reckless Kelly, giving them a chance to stretch out and let loose on their first live recording. From the pulverizing opener of "Sixgun," which owes as much to AC/DC as the roadhouse, through the new party anthem, "Wiggles & Ritalin," and the reflective, acoustic "Wicked Twisted Road," the band feeds on the call-and-response energy of the hometown crowd and pays it back. The set offers tribute to Lone Star natives Alejandro Escovedo ("Castanets") and the Texas Tornados ("Guacamole"), as well as farther-flung inspirations such as Richard Thompson ("1952 Vincent Black Lightning") and the Beatles (a bluesy "Revolution"). "Baby's Gone Blues" begins as a riff-rocking piledriver and ends as a fiddle-driven breakdown, an encapsulation of the musical progression embodied within the band. On twangier fare such as "Nobody's Girl," frontman Willy Braun could pass as a vocal ringer for Steve Earle. --Don McLeese

They have captured the energy of their live shows. If you still don't get it, there's a dvd included.

5 out of 5 stars A Steal Of A Deal.......2006-12-09

Reckless Kelly Was Here is a great live album. If you're new to the band, it serves as a great introduction, giving you all of their biggest songs. You also get a look at one of their high energy live shows. For those who are already fans, this is also a must own. You get two new songs, plus the previously unreleased cover of 1952 Vincent, which is worth the price alone. The real draw, however, is the live DVD. It's a great performance by a great band. As mentioned by other reviewers, the vocals could have been louder on the recording, but its not a major issue.

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' live album.......2006-08-31

Like the other reviewers, I LOVE Reckless Kelly and cherish my copy of their original live album, "Live at Stubbs". The vocals on Reckless Kelly Was Here aren't quite as strong as some of their others, but if you're looking to recreate some of their rockin' live show energy in your living room, you can't go wrong with this CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Reckless Ambition; Relentless Experimentation.......2007-06-17

After the muted reception she received from "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" and "Hejira," Joni Mitchell returned to the studio to record her next album. Most artists sensing a sort of critical backlash would retreat and release another commercial hit, another "Court And Spark," as it were: but not Joni. If anything, she delved further and further into experimentation which peaked around the late Seventies. "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter," her ninth studio album release in as many years received an even frostier reception than her two previous efforts (which I regard as two of my personal Joni favourites). Critics are divided as to whether this double album (upon initial release, now simply joined as one on CD) is a pretentious mess or a creative success. I lean towards the latter: this album isn't as solid as her previous albums, but it does have many high points, some of which I regard very highly in the overall cannon of her work.

Opening track "Overture/Cotton Avenue" is one of these such highlights. At almost seven minutes, the two songs here are divided perfectly because the time flies by and I always find myself wondering where those seven minutes went. This song draws you in, setting the atmosphere for the rest of the album. Jaco Pastorius is on top bass form here on the second half and the way the two segue into one another is flawless. The vocal delivery packs a punch, but it takes intense listening to 'get it' otherwise I think it will just wash over many listeners. "Talk To Me" is a wonderfully upbeat number that features Pastorius's fretless bass and superb guitar work by Joni. The memorable line, "I'm always talking! Bwak, bwak, bwak! Chicken squawking!" reveals her humour and we can laugh along because she still has something to say, as in "Jericho." This wonderful song was first featured three years earlier on the live album "Miles Of Aisles." This studio reworking is one of the highlights here. The vocal deliver is particularly impassioned and I find myself having to sing along to this in the exact same way that she belts it out. It creates such an atmosphere, but none more so than on the next track.

"Paprika Plains" is probably the most infamous song on this entire set. Clocking in at more than 16 minutes, it's a wonder she even got this song onto the record in the first place. It was 1977 after all. It's one of the longest songs I've ever heard and it sometimes feels like a chore getting through it, but I have to say that it works brilliantly when you're in the right mood and I'd go as far as to say it's one of my top 10 Joni songs ever. I listened to this song on the beach in Zante last June and it was so perfectly aligned with my surroundings: I watched an aeroplane take off overhead as the last five minutes of the song played (when the singing starts up again, "The rain retreats, like troops to fall on other fields and streets," etc.) and I kept my eye fixed on it until it finally vanished from view. It was surreal, but for some reason Joni captures random moments like that for me. The first five minutes are perfect. The vocal phrasing and the piano work beautifully and harmoniously. The nine minutes of piano in the middle is Joni's dreamlike section, before she comes around again and finishes the song off. The lyrics work so well, such verbosity, such directness. The bass and the sax are absolutely breathtaking. So grand. Masterpiece.

"Otis And Marlena" is another great song. I feel like I'd have to be drunk to really appreciate this song, I'm not sure why. It feels like there's something missing about the way it's arranged that only being wasted could bring out of it. "The Tenth World" clocks in at almost seven minutes and is one of the most bizarre offerings here. There's not even much coherence in the sound, it's just a solid wall of sound that works as a sort of successor to "The Jungle Line," except more typically alternative. The congas and the bongos are in full effect here. I think the aim is to transfix the listener so they get lost in this tribal beat, and it really works: before you know it, the startling lines of "Dreamland" kick in: "It's a long, long way from Canada!" I love this song as well, the rhythm is very funky and the melody works well with the drums and the looping backing vocal. It's very experimental for the time, too. People were doing this in the Nineties, little realising Joni preceded them all by at least a decade.

"Don Juan's Reckless Daughter," the title track, is very evocative of Hejira and could've easily fitted on that album. It works as a counterpart to the subject of "Coyote," the opener to that album, too. The chordal movement is very similar too, as is the vocal delivery. From father to daughter, as it were. "Off Night Backstreet" reveals more of Joni's wonderfully dark humour which comes across in not only the lyrics but the vocal too, working beautifully with the bass. It's short and sweet but it works wonders before the closer, "The Silky Veils Of Ador." The lyrics here are amazing. Joni had never delivered such cryptic words before this, they work beautifully, telling of heartbreak and a foreboding warning to girls younger than her. It's an almost sad and heartbreaking ending to a great album: but the vocal (and the guitar especially) act as a dawn break, giving me a sonic vision of hope and a rising sun instead of a setting one.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

Thought not as consistent as her previous efforts, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter is still a must-have in any Joni fan's collection. The whole album has a very Mexican, multicultural feel to it, which is reflected in the beautiful, warm and bright soundscapes, and the album cover art (in which Joni is dressed as her alter ego Art Noveau, the black pimp). On this album, Joni took her experimentation further and whilst she was lambasted for it at the time, over the decades she has come to receive noteworthy praise for her daring and relentless ambition in the face of adversity.

4 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Stretch .......2007-04-23

THOSL and Hejira, the predecessors most lingering in effect for DJRD, were both superb recordings. Yet, mainstream music critics struggled with the nuance, most notably with the former. This misfortune led to Mitchell feeling exiled, so when excommunicated, but still under contract, what is an artist left?

DJRD is unquestionably a finer introduction in the form of a CD as opposed to two long play records. The key to understanding this album is an appreciation of the last two efforts, along with the empathy to stand beside Mitchell, feeling she had earned the right to stretch so far as to pull herself completely away from a public, particularly critics, that seemed to misunderstand what she was trying to accomplish. Most reviews include brief backdrop, but this one necessitates a more thorough knowledge base.

The songs are,by admission, challenging. DJRD is a descendent of "Coyote", the rugged ladies man from " Hejira". In this song there is even, to the attentive ear, a clear chordal movement that comes straight from father to daughter. "Cotton Avenue" is a fine tune, actually not terribly taxing toward the end of a straight, good song. " Talk to Me" has one of the funniest moments in all of Mitchell's career ... " I talk so much... bwak, bwak, bwak...." loud and clear, there for the listener to laugh along with Mitchell at her verbosity. The beauty for us, though,is she always has something relevant to say!

"Jericho" has great lyrics, and for Joniphiles has already been encountered on " Miles of Aisles". " Otis and Marlena" is another treasure, painting such a futuristic picture of what we see today with aging Baby Boomers, still searching for the great Eden and eternal youth, whether it be under the sun drenched skies of corrupted Miami, or the blinding glare of the overhead lights in the operation room. While the Boomers chase the elusive dream, " Muslims hold up Washington." This was 1977, guys..... gives chills, huh?

" The Silky Veils of Ardor" offers the first real completely cynical perception of love that Mitchell had put forth. Warning the fair maidens that behind that silky veil, the one that represents uncovering oneself to the betrothed, lies a vision that will deceive you. Don't look in his eyes after lifting that veil and expect to see your eternity.

" The Tenth World" foreshadows Paul Simon's " Graceland" by almost a decade, so for that it deserves credit that has never been ascribed. It could, in fairness, have been cut to three minutes verses six plus, probably having a better effect as a result. This is not Mitchell's finest hour, but her least is superior to most mortal's best.

1 out of 5 stars Difference between art and artifice.......2007-03-11

I grew up to Joni's early work, was amazed at her ability to cloak wonderful, accessible messages and a dreamy, emotional world within the architecture of her songs and the artistic imagery of her lyrics. She was a wonder, from CLouds, Song to a Seagull through For the Roses and Blue....some good bits on Hissing, Court and Spark, and Hejira. I try not to be closed-minded about artistic evolution, and all my favorite artists seem to do it. But here is absolutely no discernible effort at the craft of songwriting as I understand it. No rhythm, no melody, no message, nothing memorable, except sadness and a sense of histrionics. I needed so much more when I spent scarce money on this decades ago, and I have to say it, I feared her internal clash with Los Angeles had finally destroyed her. I have heard a few minutes of her work since this album, and it seems true.

Now, for all the people that give this such great reviews, I wonder if they really find it likable enough to play often and return to. Really? If so, that's great. I just had to say my part.

4 out of 5 stars Her Last Great Album.......2007-02-25

This album is a little uneven, and sometimes wanders off into the realm of the absurd, however, it is Joni's last great album. She made some nice music on "Wild Things Run Fast," but this is the end of her genius phase. She reminds me of the Moody Blues. Seven great albums, with the 7th giving a hint that the show is about over.

4 out of 5 stars Joni Mitchell tapping on Weather Report's sound.......2007-01-26

Even though Mitchell wanted to feel reckless in this album, she accomplished one thing with her music: coming closer to Weather Report. It's obvious she loved its jazz-fusion and admired Jaco Pastorious and Wayne Shorter so much to have invited them to reach their peaks, but as master musicians they could only achieved what Joni allowed them to do. In "Paprika Plains" (a song over 16 min. long) Joni unloads wonderful lyrics but only allows her group of pioneers to explode at the last two and half minutes. I would have hoped to hear a longer and more robust instrumental finish worthy of Weather Report's reputation. Over all the album is interesting because Mitchell is not afraid of going out on a very tiny limb.....

5 out of 5 stars Should have called it "Greatest Hits"........2005-09-07

Wow. I've been an RK fan for a while now, but I actually picked up their most recent album "Wicked Twisted Road" before this one. I liked it so well that I had to check this one out. The only problem is trying to decide which one to listen to- they're both that good. If you're into this kind of music at all (americana, alt-country, roots-rock) you'll no doubt soon be calling this your favorite band. Even if you're not into those genres, you owe it to yourself to check this one out. Every song's a winner, but if I had to choose favorites I'd go with "Vancouver" and "Desolation Angels". Pick this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Hits The Sweet Spot.......2004-09-30

This is one of the best albums of the new millenium. Some songs are simple and straightforward like "You Don't Want Me Around", "Nobody's Girl" & "May Peace Find You Tonight" and others tell stories of life on the road like "Desolation Angels" & my favorite "Vancouver". The songwriting is top shelf. The music is mostly about the blending of guitars. They use a little of everything; acoustic, electric, mandolins, lap steel, etc. It reminds me a little of Los Lobos at their best when they use like 5 or 6 guitars on every song. The guitars never get in the way of the vocals however. This is a nice job of production by Ray Kennedy, one of the best in the biz.

It may be a little too country for some alt-country fans and not mainstream country enough for that crowd but for most folks, I think this should hit the sweet spot. A great record!

5 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better.......2004-07-12

I began listening to Reckless Kelly in 1998. I thought their first album "Millican" was excellent and had trouble taking it out of my CD player. Aside from the Mermaid Avenue discs, I thought it was one of the better alt-country CDs of the late 1990s. After numerous times listening to their sophomore effort "The Day" I begrudgingly admitted to myself that I enjoyed it even more. "Under the Table" raised the bar even more. Although they have always seemed talented beyond their years, the level of musicianship and songwriting took a noticable leap with this disc. They seem to have matured (no signs of anything like Crazy Eddie's Last Hurrah and Time Bomb, great songs though they are) and yet they still seem to not be taking themselves too seriously. They are the true embodiment of alt-country, good twangy guitars and fiddles with undercurrents of roots, blues and rock. If you liked Uncle Tupelo or any of the various offshoots or have an appreciation of true country/roots rock you will really enjoy this album. And if you get a chance to see them live, do not pass it up under any circumstances. Aside from an excess of cover songs in the last half of the set it is one of the better live shows out there.

5 out of 5 stars Under the table.......2003-10-31

This cd gets better everytime I listen to it. The band puts on a great live show to match their cds. Reckless Kelly gets the job done.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh modern country rock.......2003-08-29

If you're a fan of Steve Earle you shouldn't overlook this album. Reckless Kelly have adopted the Earle style and the singer even sounds very much like the old country rebel. In the booklet, Robert Earl Keen writes an introduction in which he really praise Reckless Kelly and I'm bound to agree. The album starts with two very catchy and melodic alternative country tunes with a fair amount of rock. The rest of the material is a mixture of faster and slower songs with hooks and melody in common. The country music style is always present but it doesn't sound as slick as modern acts like Shania Twain or as old as the Nashville tradition. I believe Reckless Kelly is the perfect bridge between the old and the new sound. If you like Steve Earle, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen among others, I can almost guarantee that you'll also find this album enjoyable. Dedicated fans of Jayhawks, Scott Miller, Whiskeytown and Ryan Adams might also like this attractive effort from Reckless Kelly.

These prewar gems from a long-neglected artist have been remastered and now sound better than ever. Scott's career as composer, bandleader, and electronic-music pioneer is just beginning to be rediscovered. Here, he mixes swing jazz with classical forms, exotica (long before there even was such a thing), and his own hyperactive melodies to create a timeless sound. Many of the bouncy tunes are recognizable from their constant use in cartoon soundtracks over the years: the classic "Powerhouse," a jittery mix of an edgy scherzo and a relentless march (as well as a favorite of Looney Toons composer Carl Stalling); the jaunty "The Toy Trumpet"; and the dizzying "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals." Scott's original recordings with his Quintette (which, strangely enough, consisted of six musicians) are a delight, and the invention and energy never let up. --Heidi MacDonald

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to a Genius.......2007-05-09

Raymond Scott's music is most remembered today as soundtrack material for cartoons. This is natural, but it risks underestimating his genius.

He was an improviser of a special sort. He rarely wrote down his ideas, but instead "spoke" them to his close-knit group of performers (The Raymond Scott Five) and listened to how they executed it. He then made constant on-stream modifications and improvements.

No one has ever dusplicated this vast creativity. If you like this collection, make sure you check our the Beau Hunks re-creation. The performances are pretty good, but also the sound quality helps you realize what it must have been like to be there and hear this frothy, dense, and complex stuff.

Wonderful...

5 out of 5 stars 32 or 64.......2007-01-23

No, the name of this review isn't a misquote of a Chicago song title. It's simply a sneakily veiled way of saying that any man who writes music using 32nd and 64th notes can't be all bad. Raymond Scott was clearly in a class by himself. He was the very best at what he did: composing complex, varied music that sounds modern even 70 years later--and that's hard to do, folks!

A new version of track one, "Powerhouse" (Scott's most famous work), is currently being used in a TV commercial for a debit card-- perhaps you've seen the machine-like lunchroom that hums until a man DARES to pay for his meal with, of all things, CASH. Yep, that music is the very same "Powerhouse." (Scott's original was recorded in early 1937.) Besides that signature piece and the equally famous "Toy Trumpet," be sure to give a listen to "The Penguin." You may have heard it before. But ALL these songs are wonderful, and there's lots to like on RECKLESS NIGHTS AND TURKISH TWILIGHTS.

Often, Raymond Scott's compositions sound like an early form of be-bop. Not always easily approachable, it's still definitely worth the effort to get to know the man's music. Analog to digital transfers are of the highest quality, while content and performance are unparalleled. Album includes a nicely detailed 20 page booklet. Very highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Raymond Scott "Reckless Nights& Turkish Twighlights".......2007-01-10

Anyone who grew up with cartoon music swimming in their heads must own this album. Although "Powerhouse" is the most recognizable Car-tune, Shirley Temple fans will revel in the original cut of "The Toy Trumpet" and you will thoroughly enjoy other classic Raymond Scott chestnuts used in early films and TV commercials. This album will surely put a smile on each listeners face and evoke the phrase "oh, I remeber that one!" If you want to have some real listening fun, make "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" the nect addition to your CD collection!!

2 out of 5 stars The reviews here are just as bad as the music on the cd!.......2005-12-30

I just received the CD (12/05). Before I bought the CD I read almost all of the reviews and they whetted my appetite to get this CD. BIG mistake! I heard it last night and it is aggravating to sit through. I love music based on the Scott premise but not Scott's! With the exception of two numbers, I never heard any of it before. I never saw a cartoon that featured Scott's compositions (and neither did he!).

I love MUSIC FROM A SURPLUS STORE. I love LEROY ANDERSON music. I love synthesized music whether classical (Walter/Wendy Carlos, Ray Lynch, Hearts Of Space, etc.) and I started listening to this kind of music in the early '60s with SILVER APPLES OF THE MOON, etc. I had a ton of strange music LPs, not only electronic, as I love mainly instrumental music. Delirium In HiFI (Elsa Popping) was one of my favorites so I'm qualified to pass judgement on Scott's "music."

Raymond Scott is his own category and you gotta hate music to like his compositions. The musicians (members of various Quintets) are top notch but they selected the wrong leader to showcase their talents.

I found myself moving from one track to another seconds into each track and sometimes I wondered why there were track separations!

Finally, this is not a fun CD to listen to and I'm definitely not going to play it again. I will not recommend it and the best thing you can do if you are still interested in auditioning it is to find someone that has a copy and give it a test drive. You buy it, though, and afterwards you'll wonder why you bothered.

5 out of 5 stars Scott is a genius plain and simple.......2005-10-26

Sure, many people haven't heard the name Raymond Scott. However, plenty of people know his music. It has been used in both Looney Toons and Ren and Stimpy, not to mention countless other cartoons, and has been sampled to death (by artists such as Soul Coughing). However, his music can stand on its own merits and is much more than just incidental music for cartoons. In fact, Scott never composed a peice specifically for a cartoon. His music is incredibly surrealistic and zany, perfect for a cartoon. Despite the fact that this is music of its time, it sounds incredibly fresh. There wasn't much like this around in its day, and there is even less like it around today, which makes it an unique listen. This is the most logical starting point in your appreciation of Scott's legacy. If you like this music, check out the incredible double-disc set "Manhattan Research Inc", which also contains a booklet. A legend entirely deserving of his cult reputation.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-07-12

David Bromberg at his best! I listened to these in the late seventies/early eighties and recently bought the CD's. What a pleasure to listen to them again. Bromberg is by far on of my top 5 favorite artist. Glad he is back.

5 out of 5 stars Almost an Old Classic.......2005-05-21

Well, I was looking to replace my vinyl copy of Reckless Abandon, and found this instead. I could kick myself in the arse for lending it out. Now I won't have a copy of "Beware, Brother, Beware" OR Stagger Lee. Damn. So, my review is thus: best muscianship you'll ever hear, delivered in a fun, funky and accessable style. Sort of like blues, bluegrass, Irish, rock n roll- all intermingled. Sigh....

4 out of 5 stars Master of Versatility.......2003-04-19

You may listen to this album and find it hard to believe its all one band. How can one group of musicians _possibly_ produce dixieland, bluegrass, electric blues, Irish music, country, Delta blues, jazz, several flavors of rock, and God knows what else, and sound credible at all of them?

I don't know...all I know is that listening to this band is an incredible experience and an endless joy. The songs are good, the musicianship is incredible, and there is a feeling of fun, of feeling good, that suffuses everything they do.

I bought this CD after having "Reckless Abandon" on vinyl. Getting to know the other album, and it's a treat. One casualty of the jump to CD....the original cover of "Reckless Abandon" by B. Kliban was wonderful in itself. Its what led me to buy the vinyl album in the first place!

I only regret that I missed the chance to see this band live. I understand that Bromberg has retired from performing and recording. A great loss...must have been God's own bar band. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Missing "Beware" but still worth 5 stars.......2002-08-18

Like another reviewer I was hugely dissapointed that "Beware, Brother, Beware" , which was originally on "Reckless Abandon" is not included in the cd. I too am at a loss as to why. It is one of his funkiest and funniest songs. That said, this combination of what were 2 albums by the David Bromberg Band still gets 5 stars for the many other variously energetic and poignantly beautiful songs.
I do hope that "Beware, Brother, Beware" will see cd light of day.

5 out of 5 stars Beware, Brother Beware.......2001-08-15

I love it, BUT: it is missing "Beware, Brother Beware", a favorite of mine. I wonder why. However, I am very happy to have these classic, excellent Bromberg albums on CD. The sound quality is great (a pleasant improvement over the cassette tape made from my vinyl). I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Blues Album.......2007-06-27

I have two of Bernard Allison's CD's and they are great, but I don't think I had ever heard his fathers music until now. This is a terrific album. There are a couple tunes that are perfect for swing dancing. Buy this album - you won't be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Total Masterpiece.......2007-03-24

This is one seriously hot album. His guitar work on "You can, You can" is truly humbling to anyone who has ever picked up the instrument. He's so clean and precise yet funky and rockin it's amazing.

    5 out of 5 stars Luther's Swan Song.......2007-01-25

"Reckless" would prove to be Allison's final album. While on tour for this CD he developed a brain tumor and died only a few months later. I saw him only a week or so before the tumor was discovered. He played a 1500 seat sold out theater and did 3 hours non-stop. It was possibly the best blues show I have ever witnessed as he was on fire all night. I had tickets to see him again later in the summer, but unfortunately that show never happened. The album itself is strong, but not quite as good as his previous effort. This one has even more of a funky 70's vibe featured. Allison tackles social issues more in this album with several tracks including "There Comes A Time", "Pain In The Streets", and "Will it ever change". He also does a duet with his son Bernard (a great blues player in his own right) called "Playing A Loosing Game". The album also includes a great version of "Living In The House Of The Blues".

5 out of 5 stars He came back, then he was gone...........2005-07-23

One of the biggest lamentations in my life is that I heard Luther Allison for the first time right about the time he died. I caught a snatch of one of his "Reckless" tunes on a public radio station in Seattle and immediately bought this CD. And man oh man, it smokes. Sadly, so did Luther, and that's why he's no longer with us.

This album is one of the greatest blues albums ever. Every note Luther plays, every word he sings, is coming from his soul. Luther wrenches and coaxes the most emotional electric blues from a Les Paul that I've ever heard! And yet, unlike many electric blues players, Luther Allison never overdoes it - he's appropriate and tasteful at all times. Why? Because this guy was playing for decades before his talent was ever appreciated and recognized in the US.

It was heartbreaking to learn that this awesome, soulful, rocking, bluesman was dead. To see what I mean, watch his video concert "Live in Paradise" or listen to Live In Chicago.

If you enjoy blues on the electric guitar and are prepared to be blown away, buy this album. All beginning blues players should check it out, too. Every song on "Reckless" (with the exception of the acoustic duet with son Bernard) is a heartfelt tour-de-force. I'm so glad Luther recorded this album before cancer took him from us. The song "I'm Back" is bittersweet to hear, because it wasn't long after that that he was gone....

5 out of 5 stars The Best of The Bluesmen.......2004-07-29

What can I say other than that Luther Allison is the MAN. His music instills a fever that no water can extinguish. Luther left us early but his music remains a mainstay of what I would call the Blues at its' Utmost. This man is what the Blues is all about. Soul wrenching tunes that turn you on, and defintely up, to what is really happening in the world of BLUES. His guitar playing leaves nothing to be desired. If it does then you're in another world. Each tune is masterfully performed and holds every conisseur of Blues by the THROAT. If you're not a
fan of Luther then you are definitely not a fan of the BLUES. Listen to me when I say add this album to your collection. If you don't you'll be sorry.
