Worth the wait.......2006-08-22
I can't get enough of this group since they reinvented themselves in 2000 as the epitome of acoustic/acid jazz.
Jazzhole is simply one of the best bands extant. Their music is always TRULY soulful, warm, sexy, inviting, soothing, inspiring, and calming.
It had been 4 years since their last set and "Poet's Walk" was more than worth the wait. From the stroll-in-the-park-with-your-mate instrumental title track to the opium-laced blue light reading of Take Your Time to the joyous bossanova of It Would Have Been Enough, this brief album is rock solid, top-to-bottom. The tracks range from good to exceptional.
"Poet's Walk" is perfect for a romantic evening, a small get-together, or just winding down. This is as real as it gets.
This Has Me Wanting More!.......2006-08-20
Every release of Jazzhole's is a bit different. I myself would love a live album, for just a combination of all of their earlier material, combined with this release.
"Poet's Walk" is an incredible instrumental, it is so reminiscent of the Artie Shaw '50s quintet, Gramercy Five. It is way too short, and kept me playing it over and over, as under three minutes is not enough for this kind of jazz. The smooth guitar and bass line are too rare these days. Most people just don't get jazz like this anymore. Yet it is still so up to date.
"Slipping of Time" is another standout, with Saunder's vocals front and center, with a tremendous acoustic guitar for backup. Saunders has to be one of the best male singers we have today. He can make a syllable mean something, and he comes with enough talent to surely make the "less is more" standard never so true. A beautiful song.
Saunders never sauntees into a falsetto, yet never loses the tremendous soul feeling that was so prevelent in the early '70s. He doesn't have to -- he knows his craft. The entire album is beautiful and the remake of "Lowdown" is perfect. I love the Scaggs version, but that is 25 years old. I do agree with another reviewer who said they should put out an entire "remake" album. They sure have the talent for it.
All in all, a super romantic album, that will not be off your player for a long time. Just fantastic to hear great performers deliver. The timing is right too for a CD. I only wish the title song had been longer -- it could have easily gone to eight minutes with no problem.
The female vocal on "It Would Have Been Enough" is a bit weak, but only when compared to the voice of Saunders. Perhaps it would have been better if they had sung harmony, instead of different phrases. When Saunders is singing it is very hard to concentrate on anything except the excellent backing instrumentals!!
A definite must have.
Elegant, surreal, funky, urban, jazzy, toe-tapping and contemporary.......2006-08-20
Elegant, surreal, funky, urban, jazzy, toe-tapping and contemporary, Jazzhole are obviously still on top form with this their third jazz CD. This CD is pure honey, sweet and fragrant and a delight for the ears.
I have to admit I wasn't expecting to be bowled over by this CD, I thought that it would be too much too ask for their third CD to be as good as the others.
How glad I am that I was wrong.
Listen to Poet's Walk whilst buttering your toast, drink red wine to Do it Right, and remember all those things you wished you had done in your life whilst listening to The Slipping of Time.
There is nothing heavy about this compilation of songs and long may it continue!
My Sunday Morning Acoustic Soul Chillout.......2006-08-15
I am a big Jazzhole fan and have been waiting for this CD for some time, and I can tell you it was worth the wait. I remember them back in their acid jazz days, and it's very cool to see how they have evolved. This is clearly a band with a lot of musical integrity. The band has cut out a lot of the programming from their "Blackburst" days, and this album is almost all acoustic... very beautiful, lots of space. It has a mature sound. "Poet's Walk" is great to listen to from start to finish.
My favorite track is "All The Ways", which is funky and sexy, and really grooves, as does the fantastic, modern soul cover of Boz Skaggs' "Lowdown". Marlon Saunders sings on most of the tracks on this record, and he is very chilled-out, less traditionally R&B than on his solo work. John Pondel's guitar really stands out on all the tracks, and there is a cameo appearance on this record by the legendary keyboardist David Sancious... and some tracks feature "serious jazz" players like saxophonist David Binney, too.
These days, I am listening to more REAL songs, less DJ/club music, like John Legend, Cassandra Wilson, India Arie, Corinne Bailey Rae, Norah Jones, Kings of Convenience, Matthew Herbert, Skye, Paul Weller, Thom Yorke, and Michael Franti. If you enjoy any of these artists, and value good songwriting and great playing, "Poet's Walk" is for you.
Satisfying.......2006-08-04
This CD is probably the jazziest of all their CDs, really honing their performance chops and making music that's solid but groovy, accessible but not too corny, and generally satisfying for most situations.
If I have a reservation about "Poet's Walk" it is that Marlon Saunders' vocals aren't particularly strong here. Lots of stuttering and ejected emotion, but not much full-bore singing. The music shines here, even enough to make this their strongest CD, but Saunders torpedos a couple of otherwise engaging tracks.

smooth, funky, original.......2007-04-22
Fresh change from the ordinary urban-category fare. However, the New-Jack residue is heavy and recognizable, so it's a little dated. That's not always bad, as it made me reminisce on the early 90s, but others may find it played-out. If you're just trying 2 get any Jazzhole album, though, try ...and the feeling goes round or Blackburst first.
When Jazz met Hip-Hop: The spirit of Acid Jazz lives on.......2002-10-24
Ten years later, the Acid Jazz scene of the early nineties is remembered mostly as British fad, and many of the best releases by Gilles Peterson's Talkin Loud label are now sadly out of print. But New York had its own fusion of Jazz and Hip Hop happening in 1993-94, centered around Giant Step Thursdays, Giant Step's house band Groove Collective, and also Jazzhole. Like Groove Collective, Jazzhole is a collective of musicians and singers with a diverse roster of talent.
This first album by Jazzhole is the best of their early work. "Forward Motion" (featuring Ahmed Best) has got to be one of the classic acid jazz singles of all time. A track like "Betcha Gonna Want Me Back" (featuring rapper KCB) was way ahead of its time: mixing sexy downtempo beats and super smooth flute, sort of anticipating Trip Hop's takeover a year or so later. (This song could exist happily on any contemporary downtempo compilation.) "Smile" is also an infectious, feel-good R&B pop song.
The best thing about acid jazz was the positive vibe it helped create: the music transcended race and brought people together. Groove Collective may have played more frequently around NYC, but none of their recordings ever captured their onstage energy. If you miss that spirit, but can't bear to hear Cantaloop by US3 one more time, try to find a copy of this self-titled Jazzhole CD on zShops, or have a dig in the dusty acid jazz crates at Rebel Rebel on Bleecker Street.
Too R&B for me.......1999-02-18
This album is way too R&B. Check out their second album, "...and the feeling goes round," which is thirty times more jazzy.

Jazzhole -the beat is the bomb.......2001-09-04
The beat is the bomb from Jazzhole, an acid jazz endeavour, is simply well crafted; it takes you on a musical journey, edging you pass bus stops and looping over potholes, arriving at a true appreciation of jazz, its true meaning, its development, its adaptation, its characters, the future. Jazzhole questions what it means to listen to good music; Jazzhole has come close and exceeded it.
To put it simply, next time you enter a bar with traditional tacky music in the background, the experience will become very taxing: keep it tight Jazz hole.

Album Description
Circle of the Sun, Jazzhole's fourth studio recording, finds founding members Warren Rosenstein, John Pondel and Marlon Saunders exploring the new hybridity of modern urban soul: a sound that incorporates downtempo grooves and acoustic R&B, with hints of ambient electronica and bossa nova. As much a neo-soul as a nu-jazz release, Circle of the Sun benefits from performances by several new guests: tabla player Naren Budhakar; vocalist and Cameroon-native Kaïssa Doumbè (Manu Dibango, Jean-Michel Jarre, Salif Keita); and percussion star Daniel Sadownick (Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Maxwell, Screaming Headless Torsos). Refreshingly, Jazzhole remains an evolving collective of many of New York's most accomplished live and studio musicians.
Customer Reviews:
Jazzhole is one of the baddest ever!.......2005-02-01
They definitely can groove real big. That's why I'm goin' out and cop their CDs from Blackburst to Circle of the Sun. They sure can kick a groove I can compare them with. I oftenly compare them to Miles Davis, Grover Washington Jr., Guru, Ronny Jordan, George Benson, David Sanborn, The Crusaders, Lonnie Liston Smith, Roy Ayers, Stevie Wonder, Chet Baker, Impromp2, Brian McKnight, Alicia Keys, The Brand New Heavies, OutKast, The Roots, Common, Musiq, Boyz II Men, Usher, Barry White, Kanye West, Slum Village, Dwele, Nas, Mase, Quincy Jones, just to name others.
Their blends of style are jazz, hip-hop, funk, neo-soul, R&B, old school, new school, fusion, you name it. So why ya'll say this isn't a good album 'cuz it has no feel to it? My friend Anthony Rupert there's no problem with the album b/c it has what you're looking. I agree with some reviewers who said this is best to pick out if u're into rap, smooth jazz, hip-hop, R&B or whateva. I luv the entire album and hope to pick it up ASAP along with others like the Crusaders, Chris Standring, Ronny Jordan, Rick Braun, Lisa Stansfield, Jon B., etc.
'Specially I recommend Guru's entire Jazzmatazz collection from volumes 1 thru 3 and check out Kenny G's At Last: The Duets Album and 'mos definitely Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. This would definitely keep you in the mood.
Jazzhole's Best Work To Date! (www.dustygroove.com).......2004-05-02
Smooth, soulful, and very slinky -- the fourth album by Jazzhole, and their best to date! The hip New York group have really honed their sound nicely -- focusing on their rich talents as a collective, and showcasing the work of a variety of great lead vocalists. Despite the size of the group, the sound's remarkably unified -- and the album comes off like a solo set by an individual, so strong is the collective vision of the work. Loads of great numbers -- with keyboards dancing over gentle beats, and sweetly soulful lyrics providing the finish! Titles include "Circle Of The Sun", "Love Philosophy", "A Little Dress For Mary", "Winter's Meeting", and "Superstar".
File under easy listening.......2003-12-21
I was looking for something to bridge the gap between Chet Baker, early Miles and Thievery Corporation - something jazzy but with a groove. Cirle of the Sun is jazzy and has the production values of TC, but it has no soul or groove. This is yuppy jazz - the kind you'll hear on the smooth jazz station, sandwiched between Kenny G tracks. The word "ersatz" comes to mind, though it might help to think of the music as new-age meets smooth jazz meets world music. Not my thing.
For sure, this music sounds like it was made in the sun.......2003-08-22
I'm only 23 years old as of August 11, but I'll still say that my tastes in music have become more sophisticated than most others my age. Turn on an alternative rock radio station, and chances are you'll have me running out of the room or begging to be let out of the car. On the other hand, most people as young as me eat that stuff up, and would consider anything remotely quiet and mellow to be for their parents. Hopefully, some middle ground will be established thanks to Jazzhole's recent album CIRCLE OF THE SUN.
It is mostly thanks to John Jones that my interest in acid jazz or soul-jazz was kindled, with Incognito also being a recent favorite, along with the Brand New Heavies (or at least their former lead singer, N'Dea Davenport). Why on Earth Jazzhole hasn't received the kind of V.I.P. status those bands claim is a mystery for they have an equal ability at delivering a brand of jazz that is palatable both to casual (who might like a little R&B with their jazz) and avid (may be more traditional) fans. CIRCLE OF THE SUN should then appeal to even those musicgoers who are keen on finding the flavor of the month before diving into more lasting stuff.
The neo-soul fad may be starting to trickle out by now, but it's obvious that soul-jazz had a hand in unofficially creating that sub-genre, and Jazzhole helps prove that as many disciples as they spawn, the originals know how to do it the best. Songs like "Love Philosophy", "Who Do You Love", "A Little Dress For Mary" (a song about the joys of having a new baby rather than the usual subject matter involving a "baby's mama"), and "A Love Thing" are so undeniably catchy and sunny, one can not help but gently sway along to the music with a beaming smile on their face (like vintage soul music used to do). This is helped to no end by vocalist Marlon Saunders, whose solo album ENTER MY MIND just might be next on my "to-buy" list. Let's hope he works out just as well on his own as with the band. Marlon's other track "Winter's Melting" is more of an ambient tune that is equal parts new age and jazz that one can put on at the end of the day (repeat button recommended) and just drift off to.
Marlon Saunders may be the breakout star of Jazzhole (that's how things look, at least), but Kaissa Doumbe might have something going in her direction as well. She's out front singing the tribal-rhythmic "Ndolo", the bright and carefree title track (Marlon chips in here, too), and probably the album's masterstroke, a cover of Leon Russell's "Superstar" translated into Duala. Both Incognito and BNH often featured a touch of the "mother land" in their music, but Jazzhole seems to wear more of it on their sleeve, and Kaissa could very well follow in the footsteps of Angelique Kidjo on the Afro-Pop scene.
The two other vocal tracks have singers with a lot of promise as well, but perhaps a little more exposure on the next Jazzhole album will make solo possibilities more likely. Michelle Lewis does complete wonders with her rendition of Depeche Mode's classic "Enjoy The Silence", but replacing the original's synth-driven instrumentation with a more Indian-flavored beat is an excellent method I'm sure the guys in Mode couldn't have thought of beforehand. If Michelle is given more songs to demonstrate her talents on, she has the goods to go forward. "Three Days" features Spanish singer Lucia Iman on a song about the time-honored subject of being away from the one you love, but knowing you'll be coming home to them soon enough. Indeed, if Sade was a much more prolific artist, she could have conjured this one up.
The instrumentals show that Jazzhole isn't just a gaggle of singers with able musicians backing them up. "Um Ritmo No Meu Sono" is an almost indescribable blend of Latin and African, yet either way the urge to dance is inescapable, even for an eternally left-footed soul like me. "Winter's Melting" is almost all instrumental, but there is the occasional instance of Marlon Saunders turning his voice into yet another instrument to accent the atmosphere created by the song. "Horn Interlude" struck me as the only sour grape in an otherwise delicious bunch in that it's only 2 minutes long, meaning just as you're getting into it, it's on to the next track. Perhaps a slight lengthening could have turned into a proper song.
While I may have a certain old guy-sense in my musical choices, I still believe there are some younger artists who can keep the music fresh while still not neglecting where the music once went. The whole genre of soul-jazz might be an example of this, but even there are some visionaries for newer ones to look up to, and Jazzhole definitely is one of them. CIRCLE OF THE SUN never fails to look back to the music's past, while at the same time taking it in new or under-used directions. As the mainstream music scene continues to become more about what sells rather than what lasts, albums like CIRCLE OF THE SUN and bands like Jazzhole will be an example of the wonders music can do without any regard for the bottom line.
4-1/2 stars -- Definitely worth the hype.......2003-07-24
Now, this is no exaggeration: no matter what album I look at on this site, I look at "Our Customers' Advice", and under it, at least 3 people recommend Circle Of The Sun in addition to, or instead of, it. And after a while I asked, "What IS that?" To find that out I picked up the album, and I'm sure glad I did.
Although the group is called Jazzhole, the music on here isn't strictly jazz. It's more like jazz sprinkled with neo-soul. And there are plenty of good examples of that on here, like "A Little Dress For Mary", "Love Philosophy", and "Who Do You Love".
The group also does well with remakes. I know some people may be tired of hearing covers of The Carpenters' "Superstar" (no, Luther fans, he did NOT make that song first), but this version is really good. And I'm not exactly sure why they chose to remake Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence", but they do a good job on that too.
There really isn't anything wrong with this album, although some people may wonder why they would need guest vocals on "Three Days" when there are already 12 people in the band. Oh well, do what everyone advised you to do and pick this album up.

"Blackburst is a sexy, funky-as-all-get-out album that trips on R&B, house, old-school soul, jazz, and just about everything in between. Perhaps the album's only flaw is that, when confronted by the sweet sounding tracks, you'll find yourself in a dilemna: take your clothes off and have some close-quarter fun, or keep them on and dance and sing yourself silly to these player-worthy hook-ups." - Derrell Bradford 411
Customer Reviews:
One of the best things going on the New York scene.......2004-05-02
Great work by one of the best things going on the New York scene -- the soulful Jazzhole, a great group with a really unique sound! There's elements of soul, jazz, and funk bubbling throughout most of the record -- but the group's also got influences that span the globe, and which bring about a sound that touches on many cultural horizons -- not in a cloying way, but in the kind of warmly integrated feel that you'd hear in the work of Joe Clausell or some of the best work on Spiritual Life. In fact, you could almost think of Jazzhole as kind of a soul-based alternative to the dance-oriented work of those scenes -- the best parts of New York coming together in a really unified sound. Titles include "Dancing In My Head", "What Kind Of Love", "Pillow Talk", "Winter Sky", and "Hush". (Reviewed at www.dustygroove.com)
Way too smooth, not enough jazz.......2004-04-05
I was thoroughly disappointed with this CD - I think Amazon recommended it to me through because of some dance or jazz CDs I bought. This is not Nu Jazz, this is not techno, this is not traditional jazz. I found the melodies uninspiring, the beats simplistic, more irritating than calming. It is more slowed down R&B with some wanna-be beats slapped on at the end, with some crappy saxophone reminiscent of Kenny G playing in the background. I pretty much hate this CD.
+3/4 -- Sophisticated trip-hop/jazz/R&B.......2003-05-31
Jazzhole's third album, their first for Beave, explores the atmospheric trip-hop-jazz-R&B hybrid they developed on their first two albums. With a core of Warren Rosenstein, Marlon Saunders and Jon Pondel producing, Jazzhole takes on guest instrumentalists and vocalists, as well as the studio itself. The productions are sophisticated creations, with instruments, samples and voices mixed into a near-seamless experience. At this point in their career, some of their productions still feel a bit constructed -- the band's followup, "Circle of the Sun," would offer a more deft touch at this ethereal mix -- but for the most part there's an organic flow to each cut. Their cover of Sylvia's "Pillow Talk" is too busy for its own good (which is especially disappointing given the fine duet between Saunders and Rosa Russ), and the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" is smoothed out to the point of dissipation. More winning are the instrumental interludes and moody sketches like "Never Can Forget You." The album's ambient groove is subtly funky (especially the bottom end), and the downbeat tempos and gentle timbres are equally at home in either background or foreground.
Don't quite break the mold, but I can still chill to this..........2003-05-06
This is definitely good music, an' this one'a the most honest an' do-good groups I've heard in a while, but I think they broke the mold more on their most recent release 'Circle of the Sun'. This one falls into that New York "hip" jazz-soul category, but doesn't venture much further from that side'a the spectrum. In other words, this ain't the kinda music you'd hear on the radio. But of course thas' not necessarily a bad thing (I mean, have you heard whas' on the radio? Thas' damn-near a compliment!). The opening song 'What Kind of Love?' is a nice song with a good message an' Marlon exercisin' that falsetto to nice effect. I like 'You're My Baby' a lot, is' a nice duet, an' 'Pillow Talk' has a nice mellow vibe, an' nu-R&B flava. I dig Rosa Russ' voice a lot, an' I could definitely make some freaknik bedroom scenes to this joint; I mean is' jus' straight sexy. My absolute favorite is prob'ly 'Winter Sky'; the saxophone on it makes it one'a the most straight-ahead jazz-styled songs, but is' got a bassline an' organ that borders on FUNK an' Michelle DeVille's voice is jus' beautiful. 'Wonderin' has a real slick, '70s feel to it; smoothly funky with a nice rubbery bass groove. Is' really ALL good an' well-produced, but jus' some'a it borders on "sleepy jazz", an' some'a the stuff that picks up the pace is still so quiet an' monotonous that I jus' can't get into it; the only exception to that is 'Dancing in My Head', an' thas' cause Marlon's vocals are excellent on it, smooth n' rugged all at once; he's flexin' 'em on this one, fa'real.
I may be criticizin' this a lot, but I'd still reccommend it, but only AFTER you pick up their most recent one 'Circle of the Sun' an', above all, Marlon Saunders' solo debut 'Enter My Mind'. THEN pick this one up if you're still not full. This is a talented group wit' some illicit grooves runnin' through they heads. An' they're only gettin' better.
Seduction and Pure Talent Combine.......2003-04-14
Like many, I picked up Jazzhole's latest release, Circle of the Sun, first. I was immediately entranced by the original compositions, and the covers that sounded like anything but!!
THIS CD is worth every cent!! It starts with the tremendous Saunders composition, "What Kind of Love" which transports you back to the long-forgotten Soul music of the '70s, but with innovative and original instrumentation. But it is the "You're My Baby", combined with the "Pillow Talk" that is a MUST have here. Some of you may remember Pillow Talk as a one-hit wonder for Sylvia back in '73. However, combined with the former song, those who didn't know couldn't possibly even tell it's a remake. Saunders, who sings and writes as good as ANY artist for seductive soul, cleverly combines "You're My Baby" with "Pillow Talk" -- seamlessly, and to tremendous effect. The result is a 12-minute erotic journey that cannot be topped.
"Hush" follows, and gets into the multi-vocal harmony, only this time, so mellow and hushed, while still delivering incredible vocals and dissanant harmonies that has to be heard to be believed! "Winter Sky" is another masterpiece, featuring Michella Deville in an outstanding vocal performance. "Femme Fatale" is an incredible mix of harmonies, intrumentation, and just plain erotic feelings that mixes beautifully with all of the previous selections.
Other standouts, are "Never Can Forget You" and "Wondering." With these tracks the music picks up a bit, but never loses the mellowness of the entire CD. I'm sure the group would hate comparisons to earlier artists, so I'm gonna try and avoid them here. BUT if you miss the seductive soul of the '70s, as I do, and yearn for new voices and creations in this field, this, again, is a MUST HAVE CD. I've played it countless times, each time hearing something new. Even your grandparents would love this CD, smooth, pure music, and that means extraordinary talent behind it all.
I hear that Marlon Saunders is putting out a solo CD. While that is great, I hope this group continues to put out the solid work it has. Now, if only we could get radio to PLAY this type of music again, it would only add joy to this world.
This is the perfect CD to put on, and hit repeat, for romantic evenings with those close to you. You simply cannot get music more sexy, and full than this. My eternal gratitude for this group, and hope for many more releases..........as I cannot wait.

Customer Reviews:
JazzHole -Feeling goes around.......2004-11-04
This is one of the best albums ever made. It's very complex and rich layering of superbly played jazz and modern HH and R&B is unsurpassed. The musicianship is astounding and the richness of the production means that every time you listen to it you hear something new. The lyrics are clever and sophisticated in parts with some very intelligent lyrical and musical wit which links the material to some classic jazz pieces. God only knows why this album wasn't massively successful and why it has been unavailable for some years. I have 3 copies just in case !! - Sean
smooth stuff.......2003-10-11
great disc and great intro to jazzhole. nice smooth stuff, mellow, with some hip-hop flava thrown in for fun. every time i listen to this album, i wonder why it didn't get bigger. warren rosenstein (one of the founders of the group) is a good guy and deserved the group to get bigger. sort of like groove collective, if you listen to the album you love it, but you won't understand why not everyone listens to the album.
jazz for your ass.......1999-02-18
This record is excellent. It's very jazzy with a lot of soul and a little bit of R&B influence. The few tracks that have rappers are smooth and flow really well. check this one out.
