Customer Reviews:
Great Al Green Classic.......2007-02-08
This is one of the best of Al Greens' collection. I buy it, I play it until it's unplayable, and replace it. My cd collection can't be without it.
5 star album, 1 star mastering job.......2007-01-31
I agree with the other reviews -- this album is excellent and, for me, is Al at his best.
I wanted to add my two cents about this particular edition of it, though. I bought this when it came out just to hear the bonus tracks and was horrified at how horrible this cd sounded compared to the previous cd edition on the same label (The Right Stuff) as well as various other cds that contain some of the same hit tracks. The mastering engineer here definitely used too many of the tools at his disposal in an effort to enhance what was already on the master tapes. Unfortunately removing the analog tape hiss (not that it was excessive to begin with anyway) removed the sense of life from these recordings. And other processing REALLY screwed up some of these songs, causing the vocals to become an unfocused mess (I've heard that this is the result of an attempt to widen the stereo image). Do yourself a favor and seek out the previous cd on the same label (unfortunately no bonus tracks there) or an import version on the Demon label.
Soul has never been better!.......2006-06-09
I agree, why aren't there more reviews of this album?
Al Green is quite possibly the most underrated artist ever, soul music or otherwise. Though some might disagree, most of this is due to the fact that the 70's was extremely competitve music-wise. Whlie The Reverend is remembered, he is not remembered as fondly as Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass and Barry White. And that beloved is a shame.
Still in Love with You is a complete album. The type of album that you can play straight through, in order, time after time. Each songs flows into the next creating the sense of a man giving a melodic testimony concerning his innermost feelings about love, life, longing, pain, sadness melancholy and redemption. Not a wasted note, sound or breath is to be found on the entire album.
Of all of the instruments used in the making of this album, Al's voice is the greatest of them. It can be heard best on "Simply Beautiful". It is simple, controlled and seductive. He purposely teases with a falsetto that's as light as a feather yet as powerful as a tiger. All within his control at the same time. He sings as if he's whispering in his lady's ear - the moans at the end are potent enough to produce babies themselves.
You cannot be a music fan or collector of any kind without owning this album. Masterpiece is an understatement..this is what the soul afterlife must be like.
this is his best.......2006-03-05
Al Green was the first great soul singer in the 70's. Plenty of releases until today; yet he failed to release a better album than this, with another one called "call me". These 2 albums stand apart from all the rest of his work.
This album definitely sets the standard of what we call today Smooth Soul.
If you are new to Al Green's work, this album next to "call me", are the ones. You will not regret it.
Forever Al.......2005-08-21
Listining to this cd brought back fond memories of my early 20s in Detroit rivaling the Motown popularity when music was king,
Al Green is a timeless testamony of love and happiness.Yes Al we're still in love with your music.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24
If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.
Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26
This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.
The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.
There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.
This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.
This is a fun disc to have.
A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03
This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.
Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05
Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

Sad.....but true!.......2006-04-11
Roy Orbison is my favourate singer after Elvis Presley. I
have most of all his LP's and CD's. His voice is unique
and has given me 45 years of real pleasure listening to his
rockers, ballads and country songs as well (buy Roy Orbison
sings Don Gibson). However it is sad to say but this rather
unknown LP or CD from 1975 is horrifying. The recording
quality is terribly poor and something was wrong by then
with his wonderful voice. He can't reach the high notes,
and the low ones are trembling. I can't understand how the
recording company could ever release it. Did they try to
ruin his uncomparable career? It's simply trash. This can't
be the same guy who was still to be so tremendous popular
in the second part of the 80's with You Got It or California
Blue just to mention a few. Please don't make the same mistake
I did by purchasing it. No wonder I had never heard of it
before. If we want to preserve our wonderful Roy, the sale
of this record should have been prohibited then and nowadays
as well.
Possibilly the lowest rated album but listen for yourself.......2004-02-26
I think this album was very well done, I love the songs "All I need is time" , " Still ( In love with you )" , " pledging my love" , and " Spanish Nights ". The song Heartache is an earlier made song when Roy was still on MGM / London records. This album would be great in any Roy Orbison's fan collection and possibilly they will re-release the 45's on cd because there are 6 or more songs that were never used on cd such as songs like "Shy Away" , "Close Again", "Flowers", "Sugar Man" and some rare ones like "An empty cup ( A broken date), or Crying (live) from the double single version of Wildhearts.
Thanks to any fan who may be reading this thanks the Ultimate Roy Orbison vinyl collector
Not a bad cd.......2003-12-06
For some odd reason, Roy's MGM albums are maligned, this despite the fact that there are some gems among them (Memphis, Many Moods, Roy Orbison Sings Don Gibson). I'm still in love with you fits in with the MGM recordings with an exception or two. The arrangements are not always as first rate as the MGM ones. On this cd, Still is as perfect as it gets. Crying Time with it's cha-cha beat is kind of odd - I think it should have been done differently, but still is listenable. It's Lonely is typical wonderful Orbison. Heartache, well, I love that song. It's an excellent song, and the oddball re-recording of it here is fun to listen to - even the lyrics are slightly rewritten from the original. Spanish Nights is my other favorite.
This music on this cd is preferable to Laminar Flow, not quite as good as Regeneration (which may only be available on LP. The sound quality on this cd ranges from crystal clear to murky depending on the track, but if you love Orbison, you won't hate this album. You'll love most of the songs, and I'd recommend picking it up.

Customer Reviews:
The best ever version.......2002-06-07
The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.
The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13
My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!
The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09
For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

Following up Let's Stay Together, this is one of Green's greatest long-players. Southern soul's most eccentric stylist never sang more sensuously than he did on "Simply Beautiful,"" or on the six-and-a-half-minute country-soul meditation that is Kris Kristofferson's "For The Good Times."" Nor did the Hi house band sound more crisply funky than on mid-tempo beauties like the title track, "Love and Happiness," or "Look What You Done For Me." As rough-hewn as it is, the sound Green and his producer Willie Mitchell craft is still mighty hard to beat. --Barney Hoskyns

Customer Reviews:
one of my top five favorite albums.......2005-01-19
This is great! You owe it to yourself to listen to "For the Good Times" in particular at least a dozen times a year. It may be the greatest song ever recorded.
...slippin on my ..........2003-02-03
i have three of brother green's cds... the others are greatest hits and are ALL ENCOMPOSING [darn] near of all of his important work...
...but nothing i have heard blends so [darn] well together as this disc in its entirety... simply beautiful??? this cd is more than that! this is everything you could want in soul music and more!
Just Listen.......2002-10-21
Listening to this album is an amazing and intense emotional musical experience from start to finish. There is not a song on the album that lags in any way and pretty much every song is as enjoyable as the singles from this album.
Nobody has a voice as powerful, intense, nuanced, and emotional as Al Green, and the production and arrangements on this album are flawless. The horn section is important, but not bombastic. The fact that this album remains relevant and beautiful after 30 years just makes me happy, and i'm only 20 years old. So people of all ages, if you don't own this album, get it as soon as you can.
On a higher plane..........2002-09-14
Al Green has the best voice ever recorded, and this is his best work. This album reaches a frothing peak of creative genius that mere mortals can not describe in words. I won't try. Just tell you this. If you listen, really listen, to "I'm Still in Love with You", all the bad energies in your ego will be driven out. Your mind and your body will heal their Descartian rift. You will make love with newfound grace and poetry of motion. You will ascend to higher plane, riding that ethereal voice... just listen, just listen....
simply beautiful.......2002-08-15
The 1970's were a very intricate time for R & B music. There was Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Barry White, The Isley Brothers and of course, The Jackson 5. Classic after classic, everything was so melodic and emotional. And a lot these artists produced their own material. But that doesn't mean that the music was not essential. Such is the case with Al Green. With this being one of the classics under his belt, I'm going to break this down once and for all for those that don't know. For the ones that do, just reminisce:
1. I'm still in love with you-This was one of the best songs in the 1970's and is probably seen on a lot of compilations. An up-tempo yet mellow track like this with his vocals equal CLASSIC! 5 out 5
2. I'm glad you're mine-This melody is so incredible and has been sampled by some of today's artists (i.e. Mary J. Blige's "Time"). Anyways, this has to be one of my favorite tracks off this release. Al takes it slower on this one and although it was not a single, it is still classic material. 5 out of 5
3. Love and happiness-This is one of those songs that just lasts forever and it has to be his greatest hit, PERIOD! I've seen him on TV performing this song on New Years parties and I think I've seen him perform this hit on the Super Bowl but I'm not sure. Like the first track, this could probably be found on a lot of compilations also. "Love will make you do right, love will make you do wrong. Make you come home early & make you stay out all night long." Who can explain it better than this? 5 out of 5
4. What a wonderful thing love is-It took a minute but this one grew on me eventually. I don't like this one as much as the others but it's still a great track. 4.5 out of 5
5. Simply beautiful-It's kind of making me speechless because this is absolutely my favorite track on this album. The slow melody can make you just listen to it over and over again. This song was also sampled by Mary J. Blige (PMS). But no matter how many times someone samples Al Green, they can't do it justice like Al Green. So being my favorite song on the album:
5 out of 5. CLASSIC!
6. Oh, pretty woman-This had to grow on me also. I think it's because of the fact that I heard it from somewhere else and I had to get used to this one. Still great, but not one of the best. 4 out of 5
7. For the good times-This had to grow on me but when it did, I couldn't listen to it enough. Giving it a lot of thought, this is also one of his best. It's hard to say anything else. 5 out of 5
8. Look what you've done for me-I liked this one but I did not like it as much as the other ones. Nevertheless this one gets 4 out 5 for the fact that being on an album with a lot of classic tracks you must keep the formula going where every track dosen't sound exactly alike, but can also be looked at just like the other tracks on the album. 4 out of 5
9. One of these good old days-Now this being the last song on the album, I thought it sounded weird to end the album off like this. I rather would have heard "Simply beautiful" being the last song. That doesn't mean nothing bad, though. 5 out of 5
In conclusion, I decided to give this 5 stars because like a lot of the material that came out in the 70's, it's so imcomprable & essential and stays in history as one of R & B's greatest moments. I loved this one like many others so if you're trying to build up a 70' collection of R & B music, pick this one up. CLASSIC MATERIAL
