Collard Power Baby.......2005-04-24
Collard Greens and Gravy are a melbourne Blues trio who play swamp delta blues. For a three piece the band can really wail. Ian Collard is easily Melbournes best harp player and does an exceptional job on this cd. This is their 3rd release and still stands strong next to their other wonderful cds. THis album is all originals but has three covers on it, done very well might i add. One might say that it is quite difficult to write orginal blues songs these days, but ian collard does a great job. This cd won an aria and it was very well deserved becuase this is a great album. For those who like delta swampy kind of blues this cd is a must have. Australia has never produced better blues. Some Difference from Hotel Costes 6.......2004-01-01
I ordered this CD after seeing 5 star reviews at amazon.
It very well may simply be a matter of preferences, but I would definitely rate Hotel Costes 6, also compiled by Stephane Pompougnac, as excellent and worthly of 5 stars. However, in comparison, the Saks Fifth Avenue sound is not quite the same, with the exception of a few songs of the same flavour. This could have been intentional to differentiate it from the Hotel Costes series.
Musical Milk Chocolate.......2003-11-12
Picture this: driving down the road in a convertable on a sunny fall day. The wind is rushing through your hair, and the temp is perfect enough to be wearing a light sweater. To the left you see the ocean, and you get a big ol' smile on your face. That's what listening to this CD is like. Far better than the previous Costes albums (which, if you know them, is saying TONS), this album delivers on all fronts. Not only does it present seemless jazz tunes with full vocals (track 4's "hoping"), but it also let's you get funky on more than one occasion. This is the definitive collection of electro-jazz-blah blah blah... get it! And yes, it's kind of cheesy that it's marketed through a department store, but who cares... you can't see the cover when it's playing in your convertable!
Great album.......2003-07-17
Well, I am a HUGE fan of Stephane Pompougnac and this album is, in my opinion, fantastic, just like the costes series. He doesn't disappoint. I especially love tracks 5-8, but really all the tracks are good, and different in their own way. Way cool!
Excellent Collection in the Costes Tradition.......2003-07-01
Stephane is a talented DJ and his compilations are not limited to those released as Hotel Costes collections . If you know the Costes series, this is an excellent addition to your music library.
Ancore POMPOUGNAC !.......2003-05-31
I'am surprise to be the first one to rewiew this excellent CD. It's a Costes series but with a different name, but the music are always the same : good music!.Messieur Pompougnac here again make well his business. 14 traks without one to skip. De-Phazz, Charles Schillings, and many others (who are Toka Projec? with a very funny and nice version of Fallen Angels?).If you already bought Costes 1,2,3,4,5, dont'miss this CD, 67 minuts of high class d.j. club/music.

Like many younger blues artists, guitarist and singer Corey Harris mixes and blends different styles, instead of sticking to just one. What speaks to his considerable skill as a musician is how well it works. On Greens from the Garden, he roves between the Delta and Cajun country, contrasting the solid, slow blues of "Honeysuckle" with the upbeat, waltz-time "Pas Parles." A definite highlight is "Lynch Blues," which features a great guitar intro backed by a drum roll as smooth as water poured on the drumhead. Between songs lurk bits of percussion, snippets of monologue and conversation; this, coupled with the generally upbeat feel of the album, leaves the listener with the impression of a really good party captured on CD. Thanks to the miracle of modern recording technology, we're all invited. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
I love this CD.......2006-12-14
This is one of the best albums made! It is sweet soul blues.
Around the Country in 60 Minutes!.......2004-07-04
Want to travel around the country in 60 minutes? The ticket price is...well...the cost of this CD (and it is worth every penny)! Mr. Harris gives us a sampling of every style of blues we ever had a hankering for (and a few we forgot, 'till Harris reminded us). New Orleans, Delta, Texas, Creole mambo, and even a few mixed bags like a sweet reggae ditty, and a grinding funk number.
Interspersed in between tracks are excerpts Corey Harris recorded on a tape recorder (he studied linguistic anthropology in college) of people talking about eating, cooking, and enjoying greens. And this is apropos because this CD has quite an authentic, energetic and flavorful feel much like that of the greens he talks about.
My favorites on the CD? Check out "Eh La Bah," a funky Creole mambo with lyrics in French Creole. There is also "Wild West" with an electrifying rythm and groove that would be as appropriate on contemporary radio as in a small blues club. Then, there are the accoustic diddys. The first of which, the New Orleans infested "Honeysuckle," finds Harris duetting with a great Professor Longhair-esque pianist. There is also the slow delta of "Black Angel" and the more upbeat, Carolina-style, "Diddy wa Diddy."
I will stop there, as I could literally go on singing the praises of every song on here. Needless to say, by now, if you value good, smart, and well-flavored blues, you should look no further than Corey Harris's "Greens From the Garden." Take the trip around the country in 60 minutes!
Such a good sound..........2003-02-08
Corey Harris is amazing. Check out his bio sometime, and you'll see why this album -- and his style in general -- contains so many outside influences that make this such a cool, funky-bluesy gumbo.
Think of this album as one part Louisiana, one part Carolina, one part Caribbean, and you've got a good sense of how this album sounds. Special bonus: dinner conversations with the family, dubbed into the beginning and end of some of the songs. Tastee!
I tried to like it.......2002-01-26
He seems like a good guy, it's the rootsy kind of thing I usually dig, I just didn't like it. I think some of it was supposed to be hokey/charming but it stuck me as hokey/dumb.
I'm glad so many people loved it; I must be missing something. If Taj Mahal or John Hammond are your idea of cool, rootsy blues, then beware.
...not the blues...but bluey...bluish...?.......2001-08-18
...this is the cd that actually made me get up and go make me a pot of fresh greens for the first time. ham and hot peppers and shtuff...it was good! anyway, i really dont know how to categorize this cd...it's different from even contemporary blues standards...o'most tracy chapman-ish or n'degeocello-like but funk free. it's gritty without growlin' and fun without being all the way campy...does any'a that make any sense?..."sweet black angel" & "just a closer walk with thee" are the stand-outs. the rest of the cd kinda sways around ragtime, hip-hop and maybe the songs from HBO's multi-cultural fairy-tales cartoon. it's eclectic and might take some gettin use to, but still, the biggest drawback is that i would have prefered one or two more songs...the interludes can stay...just more music woulda been nice.

Weird, But With a Sense of Humor.......2006-03-05
Q: How do you get an electric guitarist to stop playing?
A: Put some sheet music in front of him.
Steven Mackey proves this old saw wrong. The electric guitar is emblematic to his music, as the organ is to Olivier Messiaen or the shakuhachi is to Toru Takemitsu. Not that the instrument features in all pieces on this album: in fact, only Tuck and Roll is a concerto written for and around the electric guitar. But all of Steven Mackey's music is influenced by his relationship to the electric guitar and by the mindset that goes with it, even when it is written for other instruments.
What is specific about the electric guitar is not that its player doesn't have to read scores. Actually, the interpreter will have to be musically articulate if he is to play on Mackey's compositions, which are well-thought pieces that use the classical orchestra to its full potential. Playing along classical instruments requires a listening quality and an alertness to melodic variations which are very different from the skills honed in a rock band, where it is all about keeping the beat. But the spirit of the instrument somehow remains. Playing the electric guitar involves an affinity to rhythm and a way to strike a note that is very different from other instruments. Even the classical guitar, still that oddpiece in classical music formations, requires a very different technique and produces a radically distinct atmosphere.
The essence of the electric guitar can be summed up by the very term that Steven Mackey uses to define his music: "wacky," or weird, but with a sense of humor. It is self-absorbed and does not pay much attention to what goes on around it. It finds newness through repetition, and can revisit the same passage over and again in order to strike the right chord. In the absence of the drums, its disciplining device, it can really go mad and lose all sense of proportion in its exploration of musical boundaries. But its engrossing quality sometimes yields way to a strange modesty, as if the guitarist were conscious of his precarious status in a formation that maintains him at the outskirt of its script. The guitar's coruscating humor can then be turned against itself, in a self-deprecating mode.
Mackey's wackiness finds ways in its scores or its performances in expressions that test the limits of the classical establishment. Maverick interpreters and crossover artists have accustomed us to unbridled displays of originality, so the appearance of the guitarist dressed in black leather and donning a red instrument has lost much of its potential to provoke and to unsettle. But the appearance on the stage of a pizza delivery man during the performance of Eating Greens, that has a pizza delivered to the principal bass, never fails to elicit strong reactions, mostly favorable, as if the audience felt the urge to be reminded of the artificial nature of the show.
Erkki-Sven Tuur is another composer who also wrote for the electric guitar and whose work I highly recommend.
Excellent.......2002-10-04
As an amateur composer and music major, I found this album intriguing. A classmate of mine brought the album into a composition class to play for us, and the ideas Mackey uses are absolutely brilliant. He blends different genres together to create music that would please most any classical fan.
disappointing.......2002-02-19
The guitar concerto has its moments, and they are very reminiscent of something else--I think "Future Legend" from David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs", oddly enough--, but otherwise it is cartoonish and eventually tiresome. My main objection, however, is that the guitar is jangly, pinched, and nasal sounding throughout. The orchestration is over-wrought--too much doubling, too much percussion.
The second selection is a sophomoric pastiche of various incongruous famous themes.

It's a great time to be alive........2006-04-21
One thing the Scotch Greens proved during their recent tour with Flogging Molly, was that you don't need an album to turn audiences in your favor. In a terrible marketing strategy, these boys headed out on the road opening for Molly without any product to sell. But their energetic live performance, and previous tour with Gogol Bordello & Throw Rag, pushed them past the need to have audience recognition to make a successful show.
"Professional" is a great, if rather short, collection of homegrown, bluegrass punk. Like their tourmates Throw Rag, Gogol Bordello, and Flogging Molly, they are building their reputation on strong live performances, and a unique and creative direction.
You'll likely never hear them on the radio. But songs like "Great Time to Be Alive," "City is Poison," and "Drinkin' by the River" will become fan favorites along the club circuit of the US underground. Full of fans starving for something more than they see on MTV, or hear on their local rock station.
Pick this up. But more importantly, go catch one of their shows. With bands like the Scotch Greens touring, it is indeed a great time to be alive.
You'll love this!.......2006-04-20

One of the best albums for chill music. Whole CD is very enjoyable. You can play it through, put your feet up and have a nice cold drink in your hand.

don't waste your money.......2005-10-08
I buy music because its got pleasant lyrics, catchy lyrics, a good beat, or maybe I have to have it because its by my favorite band. I don't buy for the artiste content.
Pleetch wasn't for me. Lotion is the only decent song on the CD; its memorable and catchy but it can't make up for the rest. The other songs are weak and the lyrics forgettable. Imagine the phone book read to music, but very very quietly and without passion. That about sums up the rest of the songs. At one point I found myself wishing the volume on my player went to 11 so I could get some life out of this CD! Very disappointing.
Save your money or buy something else.
WARNING: Insane yet extremely addicitng.......2005-07-31
This album is what you would have if Frank Zappa joined Radiohead. Like a freezing shot of Jager, the music is ultra smooth, ultra chill, yet the delightfully wacky lyrics give 'Pleetch' a flavor unlike any other. With at least 8 very strong tracks just get lit and pop this in for instant awesomeness. "Yes", "Epiphany", "Man in the House", "Slippin'", and of course "Lotion" are absolutely amazing. The last third of the CD does end kind of weakly in my opinion but tracks 1-7 and 10 make it way more than worth it. Do yourself a favor and pick this up some way or other-- you won't regret it.

Prime-era Eddie Harris.......2000-09-18
This CD combines two very fine Eddie Harris lp's, The In Sound (1965) and Mean Greens (1966) from his most prolific and satisfying period at Atlantic Records. The In Sound is a straight-ahead jazz recording, done Eddie Harris-style. In other words, it has elements of blues, swing and fusion. "Born to Be Blue", though often covered, gets a fresh treatment. "Love for Sale" is done uptempo. The playing is inspired! What a band! Cedar Walton (piano) and Billy Higgins (drums), Lee Morgan's favorite rhythm section, play on the first 10 tracks. Although The In Sound is mostly jazz standards, it marks the first appearance of "Freedom Jazz Dance", a precursor to 70's fusion, and destined to become a standard in its own right. "Cryin' Blues" and "Mean Greens", from the second lp is this collection, have the same sort of off-centered groove and Miles Davis-inspired modal sound as "Freedom Jazz Dance". When Eddie Harris found a sound that worked, he had no shame in repeating it. While the first four tracks on Mean Greens continue in the same vein as the tracks on The In Sound, the 4 tunes that close out the recording suggest the path that he would follow later, electronic and funky. There is a prototype "Listen Here", with Eddie Harris playing electric piano (and Ray Barretto on congas!). The final tunes, "Blues in the Basement" and "Goin' Home" are, funky, swinging, organ-combo blues comps. Eddie had formidable chops and technique, something that is often forgotten because of his later commercial success. Soon after these two albums, Eddie Harris released the phenomenally successful The Electrifying Eddie Harris and Swiss Movement. His varitone (electronic) sax would, thereafter, get all the attention and his jazz credentials would be dismissed by some; however, these two albums show the many sides of Eddie Harris. He was a multidimensional player, innovative and a technical master. This is a brilliant re-packaging by Rhino records. These two lp's really do belong together. They show an Eddie Harris in transition, on the edge of evolving into a jazz superstar.
