DJ Khaled's getting by with a little help from his friends. A lot of them. The Miami deejay--whose runs the helm of a popular radio show on South Florida's urban-formatted WEDR--enlists a gaping host of collaborators on this follow-up to his 2006 debut, Listennn... the Album. His guests include Akon, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, T.I., Birdman, and Rick Ross, and that's just on lead single "We Takin' Over." Elsewhere, Young Jeezy and Juelz Santana drop in ("Brown Paper Bag"), as do Trick Daddy ("I'm So Hood"), Ja Rule ("New York"), and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony ("The Originators"). Even Jadakiss and The Game drop by for the ironically uplifting "I'm From the Ghetto," complete with proud children's chorus. Along the way, Khaled serves up alternating plates of melodramatic bass, happy-go-lucky piano riffs ("Before the Solution"), and Dade-county shout-outs. With its assortment of producers and often unwisely chosen song sequence, We the Best's missteps abound, but the album collects enough sticky beats and hooks to kept the heat cranked up like a proper night out in the 305. --Jason Kirk

Beat Novakane Indeed {2 ½ Stars}.......2007-07-19
"DJ" Khaled's sophomore effort is pretty easy to break down. Dude is trying to hard to come off hard and it's having the opposite effect on him. He looks more and more lame after every track. It's albums like this that make me say that rap is a lot like pro wrestling -- exaggerated and fake. "Brown Paper Bag" features Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Lil' Wayne & Dre (of Cool & Dre) on what is easily the corniest song of '07. I mean, have you ever seen or heard a guy trying so hard to prove how hard they are that they end up sounding or looking like a clown? Well that song, and so many of the other tracks on this album are like that. That's what makes this album so silly. Some will say I'm hating on the south, but this album could've come from Canada and I would've still been terrible. I'm still on my crusade to have Rick Ross placed in front of a firing squad because he's been garbage from day one. He alone is responsible for 3 or 4 songs going from "okay" to "doo doo" and he almost ruined "We Takin' Over". Anything Rick Ross doesn't destroy gets finished off by Baby aka Birdman. Him and Ross manage to soil too many songs to make purchasing this a good idea. It would also help a lot if Khaled would quit screaming "we the best" on every track. I'm not talking like once or twice either. He starts almost every song off with it and there are tracks where he says it at least 10 times. Another gripe of mine is that the large number of guests seems like overkill. Again, he's trying too hard.
The best songs on the album are the ones where Khaled abandons tries something different. Despite a hit and miss hook and Khaled's constant yapping, I found "Before The Solution" quite enjoyable after hearing Beanie Sigel unload over some dope production. "The Originators" is another interesting track that features Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. The problem with the good songs is that Khaled has to run his mouth for 45 seconds before the start of every song.
We The Best is actually one of the worst releases of 2007. It's generic, recycled material that anyone with even a little bit of common sense can see right through. Generic, thoughtless song titles, drugs, guns, jewels, lame rappers....I mean, this is straight up by the book factory rap. I see why he calls himself Beat Novakane now....my brain feels numb after hearing this. I recommend downloading the singles and steering clear of this sorry excuse for an album.
Standout Tracks: We Takin' Over (Remix) feat. Akon, R. Kelly, T-Pain, Lil Kim & Young Jeezy, Hit 'Em Up feat. Bun B & Paul Wall, The Originators feat. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and We Takin' Over feat. T.I., Akon, Birdman, Lil' Wayne, Fat Joe & Rick Ross
Khaled is Wak.......2007-07-10
Dj Khaled made his way into the scene. A very annoying, fake, and phony character..
Oh Well...I Played Myself On This One.......2007-07-04
I bought this CD on the strength of "We Takin' Over" and feel like a fool for that. I should know better than making an impulse buy just from hearing one song on the radio BUT I gave this CD the benefit of the doubt because of it being a "mixtape", therefore increasing the odds that it wouldn't be crap. Alright Khaled, Khaleed, whatever your name is, you got me. All you do is scream "N" this and "N" that as well as saying "We The Best At This"!! At what? Definitely not making a good album. This is coaster material. Save your money.
DJ Khaled - We The Best.......2007-06-20
DJ Khaled's (A.K.A. Khaled Khaled) second release is "We The Best" (2007). I was not a fan of DJ Khaled's debut last year's "Listennn: The Album. The follow up release is shorter and somewhat better. DJ Khaled and Rick Ross get their audience amped with a decent "Intro (We the Best)" which is followed up by a meaningless skit. The highlight of this album for me is the Danja produced first single "We Takin' Over" a bonafide hit which features appearances from Akon, T.I., Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Birdman and DJ Khaled's Terror squad leader Fat Joe. I don't care for a lot of the radio singles these days, but this track is an exception. Danja's production, Akon's memorable singing and the variety of guest appearances make this track a winner. The second single "Brown Paper Bag" follows, Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Lil Wayne & Dre kick rhymes over Cool & Dre's production. The production and lyrics are on point, I agree with the reviewer who finds the chorus cheezy, though I can look past that. "I'm So Hood" has T-Pain, Trick Daddy, Rick Ross and Florida rapper Plies teaming up for a semi-decent track. When I first heard "Before the Solution", I thought Beanie Sigel was going to rip up the track, the end result though was a track that does not live up to expectations. "I'm From the Ghetto" is a softer more laidback track which features a children's chorus and guest appearances from The Game, Jadakiss, Trick Daddy & Dre - conceptually it's a decent track which has the Rapper's rhyming about their hoods and upbringing's, musically it's less then memorable. Paul Wall & Bun B provide an average banger with "Hit 'Em Up" while Lil Wayne & Birdman deliver a typical cash money cut with "'S' On my Chest". Trick Daddy, Rick Ross, Trina, Dre, Flo-Rida, Brisco & C-Ride rep their hood on "***** I'm From Dade County", then Bone Thugs-N-Harmony drop in for the lengthy "The Originators". Sometimes a good movie has a subpar sequel, that's how I feel about Jadakiss, Ja Rule & Fat Joe's "New York". Production on this release is solid (DJ Khaled does way to many annoying shoutout's and handles a minute amount of the production). "We Takin Over" elevates this release some for me, all the same I would not recommend "We The Best" for the collection. 2.5.
Some say Khaled, Some say Khaled (Khaleed).......2007-06-16
I was introduced to DJ Khaled when I looked in the liner notes of the CD that he released last year entitled "Listenn! The Album". It was there when I found out that he was also known as Beat Novacane, who produced tracks on various Fat Joe releases. "Listenn! The Album" was basically a mixtape that DJ Khaled released through Koch Records. However, he only produced 3 out of 17 tracks and one of those were the "Intro". The CD was driven by the lead single, "Holla At Me Baby" which featured Lil Wayne, Paul Wall, Rick Ross, Fat Joe & Pitbull, "Problem" which featured Beanie Sigel and Jadakiss and was one of the tracks that DJ Khaled actually produced, "Grammy Family" which featured Kanye West, Consequence and John Legend and "Born And Raised" which featured Trick Daddy, Rick Ross & Pitbull. There were other tracks that you could listen to other than these 4, but they just weren't as memorable or you had tracks where the artists were good artists they just didn't bring their "A" game to the tracks.
In January, yeah that's right, January I heard the track "We Takin' Over". It featured TI, Akon, Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Birdman and Lil Wayne. All of these artists, with the exception of Akon, were featured on Fat Joe's remix to "Make It Rain", so that is probably right around the same time when they made this track. Danja, who has co-produced pretty much anything Timbaland has worked on lately, produced the track which will still end up being the rap track for the summer unless you want to pop, lock and drop it for 3 months.
DJ Khaled's 2nd CD is entitled "We The Best" but it's pretty much "Listenn! The Album Volume 2". You get the same artists: Rick Ross, who delivers a decent intro this time around, Trick Daddy, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe, Trina, Styles P., Young Jeezy and Bun B, who were all featured on "Listenn!". The only person missing is Pitbull who was featured on atleast 2 tracks last time around. The 2nd best track is "Brown Paper Bag" which features Young Jeezy, Juelz Santana, Rick Ross, Fat Joe, Lil Wayne and Dre of Cool & Dre. The track would be better if it wasn't for someone squealing "Broooown Paper Baaaag" on the hook (Tony Sunshine). I am not sure whose idea that was but they should have reconsidered their thoughts if they thought that was a nice hook. However, the Cool & Dre production and the artists' chemistry on the track will make you forget about the hook. "Before The Solution" features Beanie Sigel and is 1 of the 2 tracks that DJ Khaled produces on "We The Best". The other track is the Rick Ross featured "Intro". "Before The Solution" has Beanie Sigel bringing up several events like Jay-Z not showing up to visit him in prison, what's up with State Property, etc. The only problem is that Beanie is not talking about the topics 100% because he is supposedly saving the rest of the details for his new CD, "The Solution", like it's a sneak preview or something. The track is nice and so are Beanie's lyrics, you just will wish that Beanie presented everything in a different format. "I'm So Hood" features Trick Daddy, Rick Ross, T-Pain and Plies, who I originally heard on a track with Trick Daddy entitled "Duck Down" and who currently has the MTV Jam of the week with "Shawty", a track that features Plies with T-Pain on the hook. "I'm So Hood" is definitely in the top 5 on "We The Best" as all of the artists give good performances on the track from The Runners and T-Pain actually brings flavor from the track because he isn't in love with a stripper. "B**** I'm From Dade County" features Trick Daddy, Trina, Rick Ross, Dre from Cool & Dre, Brisco, Flo rida and C-Ride. The track samples 2 lines that Trick Daddy had on "Born And Raised" and is actually a tight song. If it had been cut down by 2 minutes the track would have even been better. The Runners also produce "Hit Them Up" which features Bun-B, who definitely has a nice verse and Paul Wall. Bun B and his partner Pimp C (UGK) also has one of the best songs out right now with Outkast with the "International Player's Anthem".
There are other tracks that are worth listening to like "New York" which features Jadakiss, Fat Joe and Ja-Rule, yes that Ja-Rule and the bonus track "No Hook" which features Styles P., Cassidy, Jim Jones and Rob Cash and even Shareefa, who was a "Boss" and ready to not "Cry No More" earlier this year, represents on the bonus track, "The Streets", which also features Willie Northpole.
However, there are some tracks that you'll be trying to figure out or wonder to yourself Why? as well. First we have "I'm From The Ghetto" which features The Game, Jadakiss, Trick Daddy and I'll assume Tony Sunshine on a Cool & Dre track. The lyrics aren't that bad but the cheesy chorus has to go. Another thing that will turn you off is that the track is put into a Jaheim "Fabolous", we made it out of the ghetto type format. I tried listening to this track again to see if it would grow on me, but it didn't work. Next up, is Lil Wayne and Birdman on "S" On My Chest". Lil Wayne has made 2 Carter CDs and a nice mixtape with "Dedication 2". I expect better from him than this. He's becoming too much of a hit and miss rapper. The dope cuts are nice but the bad tracks aren't even average. Last and maybe least is "The Originators" with Bone Thugs N Harmony. At times, you get the BTNH of old and with this track you get the why are they even still rappin' stage. Fellas you have a new CD out called "Strength & Loyalty". However, this track will make you want to leave the CD on the shelf.
Overall, "We The Best" has its moments. However, with the quality of the artists, you just expect better. Some artists are featured on various tracks on this CD but they don't bring their "A" game on every track they are featured on. If you collect CDs like I do you may want certain songs so you should buy this. However, if you are looking for a CD that you can listen to 5 years from now you may want to leave this one on the rack.
P.S. How many times can you say "Listenn!!!" and "We The Best" on one CD, DJ Khaled? We get the point.

Like a lot of second-wave funk bands, Earth, Wind & Fire were adept at balancing slickness and rawness. While their albums were occasionally spotty, the outfit achieved truly miraculous moments like the rocking "Shining Star" and the gloriously syncopated "September." (Come to think of it, the screaming guitar of the former was also nicely set off by its rhythmic flow.) In a have-you-never-been-mellow decade, their positivity seemed mostly realistic. With something like their powerhouse transformation of "Got to Get You into My Life"--pulling one of the great Beatles covers out of the awful Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie--they could make even the most churlish listener believe anything was possible. --Rickey Wright

Most of the best, but where's the early stuff?.......2007-03-29
This is a rough guess, but I'd say there are about a trillion EWF comps on the market, mostly either generic hit collections or tacky theme roundups. This is actually one of their better comps, as it contains MOST of their best songs up until 1978. Not all, though. I won't even get into the sorely missed deep cuts, because some obvious ones were skipped: Head to the Sky, Devotion (especially that great live version off of Gratitude), Kalimba Story, Serpintine Fire, Mighty Mighty, I'll Write a Song for You and It's All About Love are just radio staples, why aren't they included? (I would've complained about lacking After the Love is Gone, but it turns out that came out a year after this comp was released, so I can't really). Yes, I understand vinyl was restrictive at the time, but in these days of CD those songs could've been tacked on as bonus tracks (one of the few instances I'd support the use of bonus tracks), but instead they tack on these stupid, useless Megamix things... yeah. Fact is, you can't sum up the career of a band at the height of their powers in ten tracks, no matter how good nine of those ten are. I could've done without Love Music - it's certainly not BAD, and they could've picked far worse. But I don't see what it has over It's All About Love, Head to the Sky, Devotion, Serpintine Fire, Mighty Mighty or Kalimba Story.
But hey... this has September! September's a classic, man! And this was the first time it was put on a studio album, for whatever that's worth. Same with their great cover of The Beatles' Got to Get You Into My Life - I'm a Beatle freak, but I must say, this cover beats even their original. And there's plenty of fine funk stuff: Shining Star, the aforementioned September and Got to Get You Into My Life, Singasong and Getaway, as well as some wonderfully amazing ballads like Reasons, Fantasy, Can't Hide Love and That's the Way of the World, so this makes for a fitting intro for the group. But don't make the mistake I did in thinking this is all you need - it was about three years after buying this before I finally picked up an EWF studio album, and of course I had waited about three years too long. Don't stop here - I recommend That's the Way of the World, Gratitude, All in All, Open Our Eyes and Spirit as well - but this is good.
Best of EWF.......2006-08-01
Does it get any better than this? Check the songs before you buy another CD, some of these songs are duplicated on another CD. Still, great sounds.
Most Of Their Best Songs Are Here!!!.......2006-01-03
I really hadn't been a fan of EWF up to a few years ago. But, once listening to them...I can really appreciate the funk/jazz/disco/fusion sound that they have. The top songs on this one are Got To Get You Into My Life, Getaway, That's The Way Of The World, and September. Though people try to remake their songs...I believe that most of their best songs are here! And that EWF play them better than anyone else.
Fitting Music For Festive Occasion.......2005-01-04
Remastered Earth Wind and Fire collection with the nice addition of Mega Mix ones (In Japan megamix became huge hit a few years back) is a must-have if you love great music and melodic high toned chorus. They created zenith of rhythm and blues music with melodies and it influenced rock music a lot.
After around huge hit of SEPTEMBER they got on the bandwagon of disco frenzy but LOVE MUSIC, THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD, CAN'T HIDE LOVE are the song of pure ethreal rhythm and blues somewhat like Stylistics. FANTASY is one of the most favorites among Japanese yogaku(western music) fans. MEGA MIX tracks are the reasons why you must buy this particular one. It's so fantastic. Well compressing what they are truly great.
Recommended for wide variety of music fans.
Good sampler of EWF; not the best single CD collection .......2004-12-03
This CD offers a lot of their famous hits and is a good sampler. However, it is not complete enough (hence Vol. 1) because it does not contain great songs/hits like "Saturday Nite" (1976), "Boogie Wonderland" (1979), and "Let's Groove" (1981). All of these songs are included in the single CD collection Earth Wind & Fire: Greatest Hits, which is a much more complete collection on 1 CD (plus, it has remastered sound). I would highly recommend that collection over this one, especially for casual fans like myself.

What A Way To Introduce Big Daddy Kane (Rating:9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-02-27
To me, I find Bigg Daddy Kane one of the most talented rappers to ever touch the mic. I've heard very little material from him, probably because I was in dipers when this man was making hits. To me, having "The Very Best Of Big Daddy Kane" is a wonderful starter kit to knowing his legacy back in the late 80's. While listening to this CD, I understand why Kane was such a big name back in the day. His flow was amazing. Every rhyme he says is on point. The linear notes inside really expains in detail about Kane's legacy from the days while he was in The Juice Crew.
Now the songs themselves are great. A lot of the songs are from his first two albums "Long Live The Kane" (1988), and "It's A Big Daddy Thing" (1989), with only a few from "A Taste Of Chocolate" (1990) and "Looks Like A Job For..." (1993). I believe his biggest hit was "Ain't No Half Steppin'" which has one of the best beats I've heard in a minute made by Marley Marl. Every rapper seems to make refrence to that song, and I can see why. Another song that really stuck out to me when I first heard it was "Smooth Operator" which also has a nice beat. And his voice in that song was deep, I see why the ladies loved the man.
We get a few treats here on this album. There is "Wrath Of Kane" that was recorded live from the Apollo Theatre, which has fans screaming at the top of their lungs showing love for Kane. I haven't heard the album version yet, but this one here is good as well. Then at the end of the album we get "Give A Demonstration" that was an outtake from his "Prince Of Darkness" (1991) album. I personally don't see how was an outtake. Hearing that song really shows Kane's versitale lyrical skills throughout that song.
So there we have it. One of rap's biggest icons best songs all here on one CD. This CD is really a starter kit to Big Daddy Kane. A lot of rappers chipped their flow off of Kane, like Jay-Z and Big L (no disrespect) and some people never realized that. All these people who listen to the radio and claim that some artist who debuted some 3 or 4 years ago is the best rapper alive really need to listen to artists like Big Daddy Kane and experience what origionality is all about. I didn't know that Kane was one of the first people to wear jewelery and drive nice cars and get upscale ladies, before everybody and their mother in rap music were doing that. Talk about one hell of a trendsetter.
There are a few tracks I want to hear though that are not on here. I heard he made a song with the late Barry White and that has me curious to what it sounds like. Also none of his songs from his last two albums "Daddys Home" (1994) & "Veterans Day" (1998) are on here...and from what I heard, they were not as good. But if you are a fan of hip hop and haven't heard of anything from Kane, this album is what you should get.

Classic Intelligence.......2006-11-01
When I listen to folks like Big Daddy Kane, it amazes me that today's rappers think they're "the best rapper alive." You have got to be kidding me! I can't think of one rapper who is on today's "hip hop" magazine covers that can outdo Kane. This man took metaphors, similes, multisyllabics, rhythm, and competition and annihilated them. I love this album. I added his page to my MySpace page and I could just sit and listen to it all day. "Smooth Operator" and "Set it Off" are my favorite cuts on here, but I could let every single one of these songs play out. I must be getting old because I'm at the point where when I want to go to a club, I specify what kind of music the deejay must play for me to even drive into the parking lot. Remember when hip-hop consisted of something past how much your car/jewelry cost and how many hoes you had? Man, those were the days!
I present to you............2006-08-31
Here he is ladies and gentleman the one who put light skin brothaz out of business for good. He had that "Jay-z touch" flow and lyrics were banging. Although CHuck-d and Rakim were the hardest he let them be and no one was in his radar when it came to being smoothe (check out smoothe operator & No half Stepping). Your collection starts here if your a Ma$e and Jay-z fan.

It's not quite the first rap record, or the best, but Rapper's Delight--15 glorious minutes of the bass line from Chic's "Good Times," with a New Jersey crew spieling goofy routines about Superman and bad food on top--is one king hell of a party-starter. After that, they could have filled the rest of the disc with crowd noise and gotten away with it, but the Sugarhill Gang had a bunch of other party-jam hits, notably the almost-as-indelible "Apache" and "8th Wonder." Those songs show up here too, along with some entertaining non-hits and "Showdown," their rap-off with the Furious Five. What they're saying isn't really the point; the point is to move the crowd, and they're still hip-hop's greatest entertainers. --Douglas Wolk
Album Description

Hip Hop at it's best........2007-07-10
This is truly a get up and dance CD that everyone would love. You can't just sit down listening to this.
Great.......2007-01-03
Great Service, Quick Turnaround! I was very pleased. This was a very hard to get item.
Not "Old School" But Rather "Before School Had a Name".......2006-10-29
The Sugarhill Gang brought Rap to the mainstream and in many ways cut a path for others to follow and build upon. Listening to this album, their nostalgic appeal is obvious. It is upbeat with catchy hooks and fun lyrics. The beat will get your head bopping and toes tapping. This is timeless music about partying, having some good fun from "Back in the Day" where the worst thing you could be is a "Sucka MC."
Recommended songs: "Rapper's Delight," "Apache," "Kickin' It Live From 9 to 5."
What this is not: Do not expect the technical sophistication of today's recording artists with 48 track recording and computer assist. Do not expect to find some social message - the only message here is having fun at the club or party.
Personal Note: The Sugarhill Gang was my first exposure to Rap music more than 20 years ago. It is good to hear rap without someone "Bustin a cap," or demeaning women. As to its staying power, I played this for the college student hire in my office and it was a big hit with her.
Classic.......2005-09-09
I applaud the person who put Super Pimp in his place. For that prick to have the audacity to disrespect them shows great ignorance on his part in the culture of Hip Hop. The Sugarhill Gang, along with the hip hop Holy Trinity (DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa) are the embodiment of Hip Hop.
Admittedly, I'm a fan of "Gangsta" rap as well, but I still respect, appreciate and enjoy the originators of this incredible genre... and if you think NELLY is gangsta there is something seriously wrong with you. I just hope Super Pimp realises that "Gangsta" music originated from "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five (featuring Melle Mel).
Aaanywho, "Rapper's Delight" is a timeless classic and "Apache" is the hip hop ANTHEM, containing a lot of elemental old school Hip Hop, helping to unify the Hip Hop sound. This album is a must-have when one wishes to reminisce about the "Good Ol' Days", although be prepared for the depressing realisation that THAT kind of vibe will never be duplicated again.
Jump On This!!.......2005-07-14
Even without the classic Rappers Delight, I would have bought this this CD for Apache and 8th Wonder alone. Brings you back to a place and time when Hip-Hop was about the FUN instead of the GUN. To the misguided reviewer below "Super Pimp" - I for one DO get the point that you were just joking in order to get people upset. The only other alternative is that you really are as ridiculous as you sound. Peace 2 U 2.

Love, trust, and loyalty are themes shared by The Best Man's script and the soundtrack. Instead of a hodgepodge of inspirational songs, the album carries a story that parallels that of the film (all but two of the tracks appear in the movie). Near the beginning, Maxwell's sultry voice warns a lover to keep things truthful on "Let's Not Play the Game," arguably the disc's sexiest track. After the damage is done, Faith Evans aggressively justifies infidelity on the upbeat "Best Man." The mood-setting "Turn the Lights Down Low," a studio-engineered duet between Lauryn Hill and the late Bob Marley, leans toward physical and emotional reconciliation. While the soundtrack may not be enough to comfort a groom whose best man has slept with his bride, The Best Man is full of heartfelt soul. --Celine Wong
Customer Reviews:
Very nice soundtrack by a great movie.......2007-06-25
How often does a soundtrack come along that actually contains a good set of the music pertaining the movie? This soundtrack combines both old school and some of the best respected artists in the industry. As you listen to this you'll fine yourself listening to some fast, slow, and mid-tempo songs all line up into this album.
Hip-hop/ R&B's reigning queen, Lauryn Hill teams up with the late Bob Marley on a beautifully redone track of "Turn Your Lights Down Low." Introspective and controversial rap group The Roots start off the album with their upbeat "What You Want", and the very soulful Maxwell contributes two new tracks to the album, "Let's Not Play the Game" and "As My Girl." Eric Benet`s "Poetry Girl" is very nice along with Latocha Scott's "The Girl is Hot." Though the love infused ballads and sultry R&B cuts are enough to keep the record on top. "The Best Man" has its low points. The Sporty Thieves' "Hit It Up" seems to be misplaced in the ocean of love songs, and "The Best Man I Can Be", which teams up Ginuwine, Tyrese, R.L., and Case, is a musty, ill-fated anthem for men with morality. I was also slightly disappointed that they didn't have the Stevie Wonder's "As" and Cameo's "Candy." But I got over it.
However, "The Best Man" is able to hold its weight and hits hard with passion and love.
I would get this if not see the movie which I highly recommend but I think you should do both to really understand everything. If you listen to the lyrics of some of the songs they really match some of the characters in the story. Like Faiths song "Best man." She takes the place of the The girl who got married in the movie and you know it when she says......"He is your best man, I guess you didn't know that I had him, I know that you hate that, but it's like that, you are the best but yet he ain't so bad". I won't say more than that.
Other than that this soundtrack is one of the best and strongest soundtracks that had drop in 99'. It almost reminds me of the "Soul Food" album. I guess because the movies are similar in there own way and they both give out great and memorable songs. Once you hear this you'll definitely add this too your collection.
Not bad at all, for a soundtrack * * * . 5 stars.......2007-06-08
Eight out of 14 tracks are good for me so not five stars but,it is good because of great tracks by Allure and Beyonce. I do not know if the Boyonce track, After All Is Said And Done is a cover, as it is a very good track the best on this cd...if it is not just another cover of someone's song, then it should have been a big hit for her. Allure's (not many people know of them) When The Shades Go Down is a good track.
Maxwell, Eric Benet and Kenny Lattimore have some good tracks and Faith Evans's Best Man..I think is her best up tempo track...the Lauryn Hill Bob Marley track is good also....so check this cd out.
Great CD.......2007-04-02
This CD is wonderful! I am using several of the songs from this CD in my upcoming wedding. There is a great mix of up beat and slow tunes, which is great because it covers many different emotions.
birthday party song.......2007-03-11
could anyone tell me the name of the song which was played at the birthday party, cuz it wasn't included in the sound track.
Great CD Great Movie.......2007-01-05
If you want something to put on and just jam a lil without all of the dancin and sweat this is the CD. The music speaks for itself. Its nice when you want to just keep a mellow mood.

Is there a rap fan out there who didn't like "The Message"? It took rap in an entirely new direction: while others were content to ride the "Double Dutch Bus" down to the disco, the Furious Five spoke out about social decay. The chorus of "The Message" ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head / Sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under") describes the effect of Reaganomics in ways that Dan Rather never could. Of course, Grandmaster Flash and company weren't against partying. In fact, they cut some of the best party tracks in the genre's history ("Freedom," "The Birthday Party"), along with some battle raps ("Step Off," "Showdown") to complete the package. Copyright restrictions probably kept the beat-edit classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" off the track listing. Still, one glaring omission isn't reason enough not to pick this up. --Todd Inoue

GRANDMASTER FLASH & FURIOUS FIVE.......2007-05-17
AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR RAP OLD SCHOOLER'S. DELIVERY TIMEFRAME IS OUTSTANDING.
Sure-fire Collector's Item.......2007-03-12
I can't imagine a rap fan out there who would argue that Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five were not one of the best of all-time. Recognized as one of the pioneers of rap, particularly for turning rap into mainstream music, Grandmaster Flash should be respected for his work and ability to work with multitude of talents. "The Message" has to be regarded as one of the most popular rap songs of all time, and possibly in any type of music. That hit has been re-made, mixed, and sampled so much that even youngsters that were born after the hit was recorded will recognize the sounds. "Step Off" was also a hit during the break-dance era of the '80's, and many fans found that song more enjoyable than given credit for. Speaking of enjoyable hits, who didn't enjoy "Beat Street" (from the movie Beat Street) back in those days? It has to be regarded as one of the most fun rap songs to memorize, and "New York, New York" is another one that many enjoy rapping themselves. "White Lines" is a hit that many initially had no idea what the meaning of the song was supposed to be, but many figured it out after a while, once drug usage in urban areas of the country became heavily exposed to the mainstream audiences. Original lyrics, street-cred, hip beats/sounds, and strong social messages... Nothing seems to be missing in this compilation. If you like old school, make sure you add this one!
The Beginning of an Era .......2006-07-18
If you consider yourself a hip-hip fan (espically if you listen to most of todays garbage pop fake hip-hop, this is a must that you have this in your collection. Grandmaster Flash was one of the pioneers of hip-hop and even though this collection of songs was taken from the early 80's, it still holds up with its rawness. Its a shame that hip-hop has reached what it is today and the just arent enough hip-hop artist that do it just for the love of the music. Its a cruel world today in the music bizz, as most of the hip-hop artist of today are creations of some billion dollar record company and signs them to be the next MTV music hit. If you want raw, no nonsense hip-hop from the early days before artist cared about being #1 on TRL, this is a great place to start. ENJOY
Grandmaster cuts faster.......2005-11-01
Extraordinary music. Listen to what DJ GM Flash puts together: the grooves are so carefully fashioned and leap out at you time and again. In particular I've never heard a funkier slap bass sound - ever.
And let's talk MCs. Why don't rappers these days attack the mike anymore like these guys did? Are they afraid it's not cool to be energetic? Well no wonder no one dances to rap music anymore. But when you listen to this - the grooves and the punchy vocals - you will definitely move your body.
Only problem is: when you get hold of any other Hip Hop after this you'll be disappointed that the DJs don't cut as fast and clean as this Grandmaster.
The Quintessential 'Best Of' Collection.......2005-06-14
Like many of you, I've only heard "The Message" prior to purchasing this incredible 'best of' collection. As you probably know, Grandmaster Flash and company were recording the most popular rap songs in the early 80s. Most of these songs are stunningly wild and fun party jams. But in 1982, they released "The Message", which is considered to be the first rap song to be pushed from a novelty party jam, to a chilling prophecy, featuring effective social commentary. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five built a rock solid bridge for Run-D.M.C. to step in, and push their "Message" even further, which eventually brought the hardcore edge to hip-hop. Whether you know it or now, their presence is still felt to this day, since hip-hop hasn't made that drastic of a leap since Run-D.M.C. (that's quite debatable). It also helped that the production was flawlessly perfect. It featured dub, electro, and R&B that was sure to hook nearly every listener of urban radio.
So if you're in the same boat as me, you're probably asking yourself, "Are their any other good songs from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five?". Well, the answer is yes. This is probably the best single disc best of collection you'll find from these guys. These are long infectious party jams. Many of which include the artillery of a large emcee battle, such as the epic Furious Five / Sugarhill Gang collaboration of "Showdown". A song I didn't think I'd like given the title, "The Birthday Party", actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Although, "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" would have to be one of the most under-appreciated rap songs of all time. It's got one of the most clever attacks on the compilation, and will surely please any and all hip-hop lovers. They do tackle a bit more social commentary on tracks like "New York New York" and "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)". The latter features hard hitting lyrics about the dangers of drug use, and probably the most effective lyrics in it's time, given the subject matter. The only knock I have on the album is the first track, "Step Off Megamix". It's merely a "megamix" of their most popular songs thrown into one track (recorded in 1994). It would have been nicer if they would have thrown in a old-school jam up front, or at least put this track at the end, since the original versions shine much brighter throughout the remainder of the album.
Overall, if you're into old-school rap, this is a great listen. It's chalk-full of groundbreaking historical material. If you're at all interested in the evolution of rap, from the pre-Run-D.M.C. days, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. One could only be happier about the completeness of this collection.

its really good.......2005-05-11
hey as an R&B album or a soul album its really soothing to the mind and its a perfect relax potion, but ehh this is in no way Hip Hop Music or any form or rap. just please dont call this rap because thats just disrespectful. but back in 1993 it was funny to see KRSONE throw them off stage and take over LOL. but yea its a really good album to listen to when your tired or sleepy or sumthing but DONT CALL THIS HIP HOP! ill use this album when i need to fall asleep fast.
I loved it!!.......2005-02-03
I watched my feelings come alive with this CD. It's emotional, it's endearing. P M Dawn gives listeners a full view of what's to expect through his lovely music. Inspired by famour artists and it's one to cure you and cure you down when those events come to.
Not the P.M. Dawn "Best Of" I would put together but............2004-04-27
These days so many greatest hits are just thrown together without thought. Unfortunately this is one of them. I own all P.M. Dawn discs and I have to say I am very suprsied at the record companies lack of attention to what this band really offers.
So many would be "hits" are left off this CD. I would spend my money on their other CD's and compose your own "best Of". The beauty and intelligence of thhis band is unique and is now missing from today's bands. On the track Downtown Venus they sample the drum beat to Hush by Deep Purple and turn it into an incredible funky song. No one wlse these day is doing that. Also on the CD, Jesus Wept the song 9:45 wake-up dream was left of this compilation. This song is just pure magic.
I miss P.M. Dawn and hope they get together again for more magical moments in music.
A Valiant Try..........2002-10-01
In my mind there are few bands as synonymous with the early-mid 90's as PM Dawn, that wonderfully talented and introspective duo from out east. A collection of their best material to date is a no-brainer. But this collection is only partly sucessful. Many of the big tunes you would expect are here: the wonderful 'Set Adrift on Memory Bliss', 'Paper Doll', and 'Sometimes (I miss you so much)'. My beef is not so much that some good stuff was left off, but that the remixes are completely stupid and unnecessary. I never listen to them. If I want a 'dance' album I'll buy one. But here I'd rather have 15 or so of PM Dawn's best than this hodge-podge. Check out their cd's from your local library and make your own 'best of'. Save your $.
Not the ...best of.......2002-06-30
I am a huge PM Dawn fan but this compilation is missing some vital songs of PM Dawn's evolution through their 4 albums. I could go into several examples but will only say..where is Hale-Bopp Regurgitations (from Dearest Christian..)This 'best of' ended up as a very one sided picture of a much more versatile band. If this is the only PM Dawn album you own (or plan to own) than do yourself a favour and buy the 4 CDs and you will discover the REAL magic of PM Dawn..far beyond what this CD portrays.

The realest.......2007-01-09
this is the real deal - old skool beats... mixed with real hip-hop flava. MC Lyte at her best. Best female rapper ever IMO. Brings back memories. top lyricist. 5/5
L-y-t-e.......2006-11-03
I'm definitely a money saver, but this is one of the few times that I didn't want to buy something used to save money. I wanted her to get whatever royalty amount she'd get for this album because she deserves it. I love this woman's style. When women of today are more concerned with jewelry, booty-tight jeans, and bragging on promiscuity, women rappers of the 80s/90s had much more class. MC Lyte was something else though. She had class, but she also had an edge. Even better, she had VARIETY. She talked about everything from a boyfriend with a crack addiction, being partial to roughnecks, being in love, females testing her out, partying, and anything relevant. She didn't settle on a formula. She was herself and I respect that about her. She is hands-down THE BEST FEMALE LYRICIST ever. I have debated so many people about this because people tend to forget the pioneers, but if I'm around, they get a really loooooong reminder. On top of that, she's still keeping her craft up to par.
Her a capella rhyme "Wonder Years" on MySpace is so raw. I blasted it for months and just checked out the video today after reading her blog. It's very seldom that I can find an artist to blast in my stereo and respect at the same time. I'm usually indifferent about the artist, but Lyte brings so much of her personality into the music (at least what I believe is her personality). But going back to the album, although "Stop, Look, Listen" takes me back in the days of daycamp when I performed this in a dance contest, no song gets me more hype than "Cha Cha Cha." That song is what I play when I'm getting ready to work out. The song isn't even that fast, but it gets me so hype to the point where I WANT to work out. "Rock the Party" is a really cool cut. I like "Poor Georgie"s message, especially since I'm not really the type to walk around saying "I love you" to people so it makes me remember to do it anyway. Pretty much everything on here is something I've played in heavy rotation back in the day and would now. Keep it up, Lyte!
P.S. That time you made Tigger blush about the "refined ruffneck" on Rap City was pure entertainment.
The 1st Female to .............2006-08-31
She was the 1st female to put the fear of God. I could've sworn a man wrote her lyrics. "Lyte as a Rock"? my goodness no woman has ever clinched the game like she did. NO ONE male/female in the game dissed her. You couldn't, your career would've ended the moment you take your 1st breathe. Paper thin? after listening to that, sooperman luver need to get vest out the dry cleaner to step to this. Lot of memories, ie doorknockers, and that blonde puff hair style. Salute to lyte!
I feel the same way as most the reviewers.......2006-07-01
How in god's holy name can this be called a greatest hits, without Lyte as a rock. Thats like a NAS greatest hits without anything off Illmatic. Still this collection is very good at best. This is a true female mc. Somethin' the game has close to zero of. In this very day in rap, I truly hate female rappers. The MC goes well with Lyte. Raw skills, witty punchlines and rhymes, that if you pay close attention, alot of her verses are bein biten today by some of the worst rappers in the game, who are bein' called good. The way she tells a story kind of makes me remember the message. Anyway, this is what female rappers today is lackin. If you new to Lyte cop this. But hip hop vets are goin to be dissappointed with this collection. A few other tracks could have made it in my opinion.

I enjoyed every cut on this CD with the exception of the first two singles. However, after that, I felt like pulling my car over on the side of the road and having an Old School Party!
Excellent compilation for one of the best old school rap groups.......2006-12-02
If any one is looking for a Whodini album, get this one! It contains the classics like Freaks come out at night, Big Mouth, i'm a ho, friends and my all time whodini favorite one love. A great buy for the hard core or casual Whodini fan plus the sound quality on this album is 1st class.
Great Compilation for Pioneers of Rap--.......2006-11-16
Whodini is a hip hop group formed in the 1980s, made up of Jalil (Jalil Hutchins), Ecstasy (John Fletcher) and Grandmaster Dee (Drew Carter).
Along with Run-DMC and The Fat Boys, Whodini were among the first rap groups to cultivate a high-profile national following for hip-hop music, and made significant inroads on Urban radio. The Brooklyn, New York-based trio consisted of vocalist/chief lyricist Jalil Hutchens, (one of the few rappers to go by his real name), co-vocalist John Fletcher, aka Ecstasy (so-named before the drug trend), who tended to wear a Zorro-style hat as his trademark; and DJ Drew Carter, aka Grandmaster Dee. Contemporaries of Run DMC, they were managed by Russell Simmons, brother of Joey "Run" Simmons. Signed to NY-based indie Jive Records in 1982, they enjoyed a string of hits, mostly charting on Urban/R&B stations. The bulk of production on their releases was done by Larry Smith, a bass player who also handled much of Run DMC's early work. In keeping with 80's trends, Whodini's cuts tended to be synthesizer driven with a heavy electronic drumbeat. The sampling technology that became identified with rap hadn't really become prominent during Whodini's early days, and their works were thoroughly original compositions. "Haunted House of Rock" was their first single, a whimsical Halloween-themed number. Synth-pop pioneer Thomas Dolby produced another of their early singles, "Magic's Wand". The group culled a female audience with such relationship-themed cut as "Friends" and "One Love". Backstage partying was extolled in the mildly controversial "I'm a Ho". "Fugitive" was guitar-driven funk. From 1982 - 1986 was the band's heyday, touring with Run DMC, LL Cool J, the Fat Boys, and other prominent R&B and funk outfits of the 80's. Their albums Whodini (1983), Escape (1984), and Back in Black (1986; no relation to AC/DC) were all well-received by rap fans and youthful R&B enthusiasts. The `Fresh Fest' tours were the first arena-sized tours to feature all hip-hop lineups, but full-fledged crossover fame seemed to elude them, however. The group had earned their share of gold singles and albums by 1987, when the hits started to slump. Open Sesame, their release that year, failed to produce any hits. After that point, the band eked out their tenure on Jive by occasionally releasing singles, including "Anyway I Gotta Swing it" for the Nightmare on Elm Street 5 movie soundtrack.
In the 90's, the band made a handful of attempts at a comeback. In 1990, they signed with MCA Records and released the Bag-A-Trix LP in 1991, which promptly failed to have commercial impact. In mid '94 they did score a hit single in "It all Comes Down to the Money" (not included here), co-produced by Public Enemy DJ Terminator X. Talks with Def Jam for a new deal stalled, and In 1996, they were signed by Jermaine Dupri (mentor/producer to Kriss Kross and Bow Wow) to his So So Def/Columbia imprint. Dupri, as a child, did a brief stint as a dancer for the group in the 80's. The album, "Six", birthed "Keep Running Back", a brief R&B charter (included here), before quickly sinking down the charts. Curiously, their old label, Jive, which initially consisted of a near-exclusively hip-hop roster, scored a mega-coup by signing Britney Spears, soon followed by The Backstreet Boys and NSync. In recent years, Whodini still tours occasionally, and their old records still surface on pop and R&B radio, especially during "old school mix" shows. Interestingly, their records have now become sample sources for contemporary rappers like Nas and Master P.

Despite the star power and the hyped-up title, this mano y mano between R&B heavyweight R. Kelly and rap master Jay-Z isn't what fans might have expected. In fact, this CD teeters dangerously close to being little more than a macho vanity project. One could assume that initial intentions were good. After all, R. and Jay's collabo "Fiesta" was a sleazy slice of playa-party fun, but this full-length project, for which the stars recorded their parts separately, is disjointed and somewhat dull. Instead of taking R&B and rap to new heights, Best of Both Worlds proves, once again, that (graphic) sex is the only thing on R. Kelly's mind and Jay-Z can probably rhyme in his sleep. There are tolerable moments, à la the title track, which features R. Kelly's trademark sweeping melodies and Jay-Z's deadpan wit, but even some good hooks and poignant observations can't excuse insultingly juvenile cuts like "Honey" and "P***y." The best of both worlds? Not even close. --Amy Linden

Kells was the premeir R & B dude of the 90's till 2002, while Jay was one of the best and most popular MCs of the last ten years. So it just makes sense that 2 of the best to ever do it would get together to drop a gem. Right? Nope. These 2 guys just dont mix. But it was worth a try.

The WORST of both worlds.......2006-03-25
Any record featuring child rapist R. Kelly and that gorilla-lipped fool Jay-Z gets the big one star in my book. Amazingly, they actually made a second album. Too bad the tour FLOPPED! Not feelin' it.
Made too fast.......2006-01-19
This album was made too fast and was sloppy. This is a low for Jay-Z, and I won't get into R. Kelly's legal situation back in '02 which caused no promotion for the album, even though Take You Home AKA Body was played on the radio.
Underrated.......2005-11-06
This album comes in for a lot of criticism from a lot of rap critics, but overall it has some real stand out tracks.
It opens explosively, with the title track, and promises a CD full of club anthems backed by Jay-Z's undeniable flow and R.Kelly's smooth vocals.
What follows is a collection of songs exclusively about sex and money (which the exception of 'The Streets'). Despite this, there are some ready-made club anthems amongst it, and some extremely good verses from Jay-Z.
Overall, deserved some of the criticism it recieved, mainly because of the shallow content of the songs, but essentially it's a good album, with some very good tracks and some of the best beats put out that year.

I can't stand Jay Z at all.His by the Numbers Rapping is Boring to me.I was hyped to see another side to the Versatile Genius of R.Kelly but this Album never really gets going like that.the title Track is banging as are a couple other tracks, but beyond that it's more show than go. R.kelly already did the Best of Both worlds with Biggie.
