The Wailin' Jennys--Cara Luft, Nicky Mehta, and Ruth Moody--are three Canadian singer-songwriters with already established careers who first got together for a one-shot gig in 2002 and, to their surprise, discovered that their voices blended in an almost magical harmony. "40 Days" represents the exciting US debut of Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta and Cara Luft...three young Canadian performers whose harmonies and songwriting have been called "spine-tingling," "angelic," and "breathtaking." The group was formed more-or-less as a lark...all three Winnipeg women were established solo artists and admired in Canadian folk circles for their singing and gifted songwriting...and the so-called "supergroup" was meant to last for one night only at a local folk club. As fate would have it, the audience went crazy for them performing in that configuration and a Canadian folk phenomenon was born. With their stirring voices and richly emotional original songs, the Jennys have created one of the most memorable and tantalizing first albums in a long time.

We were first introduced to the Wailin' Jennys on A Prairie Home Companion last year and found their songs and their sound to be so memorable that we purchased tickets to see them in concert locally this past May. We have since purchased both the 40 Days and Firecracker CDs, and just can't recommend them enough. Incredible harmonies in beautifully written, inspiring, timeless songs.

If you've not heard this album, you're missing a masterpiece. The harmony is stunning, the song selection fabulous, the arrangements are subtle,tasteful and appropriately understated, and the overall production a huge success. It's my best find from last year and one of my all time favorites albums ever.

A folk group, which calls Winnipeg, Manitoba home. Nice blend of songs, beautiful arrangements. Of particular note is the cover of Niel Youngs song "Old Man." Worth the price for any folk music fan.

Having come across the Jenny's quite by accident while listening to the Garrison Keiler Radio Show on BBc Radio 7. Their harmonising was sublime and prompted me to get on line and buy all their CDs immediatelly. To say I have not been disappointed is an understatement. These girls are the best.

As a low bass and wannabe octavist, I really enjoy singing along with this recording. Luckily, I have performed the Rachmaninov "All Night Vigil", Tchaikovshy "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom", and other works in Old Church Slavonic, so the words are mostly familiar.

I still find it amazing that these singers can make notes in the midrange still sound low! Enjoy!

I have done a good bit of research on basso profundo's, contrabasses, etc and these guys seem to be lower than any I've heard. The soloist on "Do Not Reject Me In My Old Age" has a full voiced G1, below low bass C which he hits a number of times on the CD. Very amazing recording... good musically, not the VERY best choir I've ever heard or anything, but definetly good. Russian music is great, many of the tracks are very dark musically, but there are some more majestic tracks, and a few tracks that sound kinda militaristic.

The music on this CD won't be to everyone's liking, but the unique sound of the voice of a "basso profundo" or "octavist"
is a musical rarity that shouldn't be missed. These basses have a gripping effect, with a timbre resembling that of an organ's pedal tones. These basses can sing the low A below the bass range. They are, simply, extraordinarily powerful voices. Savor the unearthly sound of them. Who knows - you might just get to like Russian polyphonic liturgical chant, as well.

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

While working on the book and film project, "40 Days and 1001 Nights", in which internationally famed bellydancer, Tamalyn Dallal lives in five Islamic countries, writes and films her experiences, she was in Egypt's Siwa Oasis. A Bedouin man asked "Would you like to hear the music from Zanzibar?". He played "Ifkhar", and she fell in love...with the music. That song inspired her journey to Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Africa that used to be part of the Omani Sultanate. "Taarab" is the most popular music of Zanzibar. It began near the turn of the century when the sultan sent musicians to Egypt to study music with the great masters. A unique style emerged, gracefully blending classical Egyptian, East African, and even Cuban sounds. "Taarab" means "Being transported by music". "Bashraf" are instrumental songs also played in Zanzibar. This style originated in Turkey, lives on throughout the Arab world, and Zanzibaris gave it a whole new meaning. On her first day in Zanzibar, a young man approached and asked, what are you looking for? She replied "Taarab".She was led up an old staircase, to the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club, that was formed 101 years ago, and today, it is like the "Buena Vista Social Club" of Zanzibar. Ikhwani Safaa are the creators of her favorite song "Ifkhar", and the only people in the world who play it. Ms. Dallal and Ikhwani Safaa collaborated on this cd, using Bashraf, and adapting Taarab music to make the perfect, most intense and heartfelt bellydance music on the market. If you like the classic sound of Egypt's "Golden Age", coupled with romanicism of old Havana, with depth and complexity, and no synthesizers, you will love this cd.

Arranged for belly dance performances, this CD is a real find not only for dancers but for any World Music enthusiast. It presents new and traditional compositions from the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club of Zanzibar, a band that was founded in 1905 and has been playing ever since, passing its music along from each generation to the next. In Zanzibar, its CDs outsell all other music albums combined, though they and their music are virtually unknown beyond the island's shores. The population of Zanzibar, an autonomous island state that is part of Tanzania, is made up of Swahili-speaking Islamic East Africans, and their traditional music, called taarab, is a unique blend of Egyptian-Arabic melodies and instrumentation with the driving rhythms of equatorial Africa and Swahili lyrics. Tamalyn Dallal, the CD's producer, is one of America's top belly dancers and a former Miss World of Belly Dance. She left Florida's South Beach scene a couple of years back after about 25 years as a performer, leader of an internationally known dance company and director of South Beach's MidEastern Dance Exchange studio, to embark on a solo journey of explore through the most remote parts of the Islamic world, teaching, studying regional dance and music styles and gathering material for an ambitious multimedia project - videos, recordings and a planned book. Since she left, many of us who knew her have been following her adventures via the blogosphere. In the liner notes to this CD, she describes how, in Malindi, Zanzibar, she followed a young guide into a back alley and up a wooden staircase to a rooftop. "This is Ikhwani Safaa," he told her. "You should come back in the night." She did, spent evening after evening at the club, and realized, "This is the perfect belly dance music." And Dallal knows what she's talking about, as this CD proves.

    Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

      The majority of the selections on COTTON CLUB DAYS date back to the pre-big band era of the late 1920s and early '30s. Those were the glory times of that famous Harlem nightspot, when orchestras fronted by Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Don Redman (conspicuously absent from this set), and others performed there regularly for an almost totally white audience.

      The tracks on this collection have been dubbed from LPs, rather than the original 78s. This in itself isn't a detriment, however the records have echo added, and a few also have some obvious groove distortion. The album's liner notes give running times and personnel for all songs; recording dates are included for most, as well.

      Despite the less than perfect source material, COTTON CLUB DAYS is still an interesting mix of 16 songs that celebrate one of the best-ever venues for fine jazz music.

      The sond Shroomz is a very strange song, but very interesting. He is a verygreat rapper, one of the best, i think. He has a talent that most don't have. But, he is a very perverted person as in the song Pussy Pop. I would buy the CD if you dont already have it
