David Bromberg is due for rediscovery. As a '60s and '70s session man, he lent his blues skill to records by Dylan, Paxton and Jerry Jeff Walker. But none of that work suggested his talents as an arranger, his full command of diverse American genres, nor his husky, moving vocals. This '74 reissue is a fine place to start with Bromberg, and songs like "Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair" and his medly of "Statesboro Blues/Church Bells" serve notice of the talent of this overlooked, roots-music master. --Roy Francis Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great selection of solid tunes.......2006-11-06

I bought the vinyl version in the 70's purely based on the cover art. I laughed out loud. I wasn't dissapointed and was happy to get the cd version to add to my collection. David is quite a showman and he gathers some great help on this collection. George Harrison, Jerry Garcis, Phil Lesh, etc.
All the songs are great but Someone Else's Blues, Danger Man and Kansas City are knockouts. All other versions of Kansas City seem terribly tame after you hear this one. Statesboro Blues and Send Me to the Electric Chair showcase his amazing vocals. Good timing, good drama, good storytelling, good music.

5 out of 5 stars great musician.......2006-06-22

I just recently replaced my vinyl copy with this cd. I saw him a couple of times in the 70's.

I read an article about him in Rolling Stone. He really impressed me. He said that when he practiced he tried very hard to play what he heard in his head, and to not accept the limitations of his guitar. Also, a girlfriend at the time told me that she had seen him at the Philly Folk Festival and that he was great Funny, talented, played EVERY kind of music masterfully.

If you are the kind of person who reads liner notes (and I am), you could see that he played on and produced many albums by a HUGE groups of artists back in the day. At one time he was one of the most respected musicians in the business.

As the reviewer says, he's due for a comeback. OVERDUE. Anyway, this was always one of my favorite albums, especially the "New Lee Highway Blues".

5 out of 5 stars Saddle Up.......2005-10-04

This is the kind of album for which you can easily round up a party posse or enjoy on your own. Intelligent and well-crafted, the music will work for the critical or casual listener.
Never one to take himself or his material too seriously, Bromberg focuses his considerable skills on the service of his songs and their character, and his enjoyment is unrestrained and infectious.
Today, Bromberg is the owner of a violin shop, and his live performances are sadly limited. But this album, while basically a studio recording, captures the breezy Bromberg style, relaxed and inviting. But don't get too comfortable, because when you're kicked back and least expect it, he really will take all your money.

5 out of 5 stars A towering album.......2004-02-23

If a picture is worth a thousand words, what's the value of a
musician's art that paints picture after picture. Bromberg is
a master of his art, and this album catches some of the feeling
of his live shows. You owe it to yourself to get this CD. Among
everything else, it's just a lot of fun.

Gary

5 out of 5 stars Dead and Alive.......2002-08-09

Someone should point out the obvious pun in the title of this album. The second half is from a live acoustic show, while the first half was recorded in the studio backed by most of the members of the Grateful Dead. These were two separate album sides back in the dark ages of the pre-CD era. Features some of his best tunes, including a remake of the catchy pseudo-mariachi number he co-wrote with George Harrison, "The Hold-Up", which originally appeared on Bromberg's self-titled debut.

    Product Description

Marley Marl remained on board, and Large Professor and Eric B. also hopped on to help produce Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's second album. With a wider range of sounds and the expansion of G Rap's lyrical range, "Wanted: Dead or Alive" is wholly deserving of classic status. The opening "Streets of New York" remains one of the most thrilling and unique rap singles released; the sparse rhythm, adorned with assured piano runs that complement the song to the point of almost making the song, falls somewhere between a gallop and a strut, and G Rap outlines more vivid scenes than one film could possibly contain. The track cemented their role as East Coast legends and showed Kool G Rap's talent as an adept storyteller like nothing before or since. Likewise, "Talk Like Sex" is the nastiest, raunchiest thing he ever recorded, with "I m pounding you down until your eyeballs pop out" acting as an exemplary claim, as well as one of the few that is printable, made in the song. The boasts, as ever, are in no short supply, but "Erase Racism" takes a break from the normal proceedings with guest spots from Big Daddy Kane and Biz Markie. It's both funny and sobering, with Biz's Three Dog Night chorus providing comic relief after each verse. This album is only part of a major swarm of brilliant rap records from 1990, but it will never be lost in it, and it's important because it's the release that influenced Rakim and Kane to step their game up to levels they didn't know they could go to. Cold Chillin' and Traffic proudly present "Wanted: Dead or Alive", available for the first time as a double disc set, including the original album, and a plethora of substantial bonus material, from artwork to audio. With all the songs being digitally re-mastered, this project has been thought out, done right and handled with care, and we hope you enjoy it.

    Product Description

Heavy Metal or Heavy Mellow? What if Slash, Kirk Hammet, or Richie Sambora learned the piano instead of guitar? It would have sounded something like this... Pianist Scott D. Davis reveals his rock roots with his latest CD "Rockfluence", performing some of his favorite rock songs, guitar solos and all, with nothing but a solo grand piano. Includes songs originally recorded by Guns 'N' Roses, The Eagles, Evanescence, Metallica, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Linkin Park, Bon Jovi, Journey, Europe, Billy Idol, and one Scott D. Davis original.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Blend of Piano Solo and Rock-N-Roll.......2006-06-30

Scott's music is soothing as well as entertaining, emotional as well as inspiring, gentle as well as invigorating. You have to listen to it to catch the blend and beauty of his work.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-02-20

I just purchased this CD today, and song after song I just smile and think "this is so beautiful", and it's mostly original hard rock songs, it's like an oxymoron but it is wonderful. My 7 year old daughter doesn't know the songs originally, and she kept saying how the songs were bringing tears to her eyes. I got this CD after hearing him at the Galleria Mall in Roseville, Ca. because it was so awe inspiring as he played. I wanted to share it with my family, especially my 5 year old who can play music on the piano from ear, which aparently is how Scott started playing himself, and I wanted his music to be an influence to her. He is a true inspiration. Thank you, Scott, for sharing your talent with us.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2006-02-07

Pianist/composer Scott D. Davis has been referred to as "the rocker of new age/contemporary classical music" for a couple of years now. When fellow pianist/composer David Nevue introduced Davis as such at a Whisperings Solo Piano Radio concert something resonated within him. He had been urged for years to record an album of recognizable cover music, but he resisted, preferring to record his own original material. Somehow, Nevue's introduction freed Davis to return to the music that helped shape his energetic performing style and to create solo piano arrangements of some of his favorites. It's a wide-ranging collection spanning thirty-two years of rock and metal music from 1971's "Stairway to Heaven" (Led Zeppelin) to 2003's "My Immortal" (Evanescence). Davis stays true to the spirit of the originals, and yet makes them his own. Actually, there is one piece on the album that is newer than 2003 - Davis' own "Scherzo." Most of the twelve tracks are intense and rather dark - no bubble-gum teeny-bopper stuff here - so it's obviously geared for a more mature audience. Even though I can remember just some of the words to the oldies that I grew up with and wasn't familiar with the more recent hits, I thoroughly enjoy this album. There should be at least one song here that just about anyone can say, "Oooh! I love that song!"

"Rockfluence" opens with "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses, a song full of rock-style tenderness and love. "Hotel California" is given a full almost-eight minute treatment that is very true to the original. "My Immortal" by Evanescence is a quieter slow-dance ballad that Davis fills with passion. "Nothing Else Matters" from Metallica is dark and very intense - a beautiful arrangement! I couldn't quite imagine "Stairway to Heaven" as a piano solo, but it works well! I really like the mystery and drive of "Wanted Dead or Alive" from Bon Jovi. "Open Arms" from Journey is one of my favorite songs from the early `80's, and Davis keeps it warm and loving - also a great arrangement! Another favorite is Europe's "The Final Countdown," a powerful, emotionally charged song with a gorgeous melody. Billy Idol's "White Wedding" really rocks, leading up to the closing track, Davis' own "Scherzo," a musical term that means "joke." I first heard this impressive piece in a live setting, and it really makes people sit up and take notice! Davis' fingers fly all over the piano with the various themes of the piece, which range from slow and almost sedate to a wild and crazy romp that makes me think of chase scenes in old movies. "Scherzo" clearly demonstrates Scott Davis' playing chops as well as his musical sense of humor. Fun!

"Rockfluence" is truly a musical good time, showing what these rock classics sound like stripped down to one instrument and no vocals. Good stuff!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting start to his career........2007-06-11

I never understood why Warren never talked about or played these songs. Now that I've finally heard them, I'm still not sure. A decent 1st outing. Maybe the process of making this album left a unpleasant taste in his mind.

3 out of 5 stars First Zevon Rules.......2004-01-21

I remember buying this lp years ago. I thought it was great then as I do now.all Zevon is great. The other review blows chunks

    4 out of 5 stars Zevon's Early Work.......2003-08-13

Although it does not compare to some of Zevon's later, more polished work; the songs are still strong. The recording quality leaves a lot to be desired, however there's something about the music that draws you in. If you're a Zevon fan, it's worth a listen.

    2 out of 5 stars A PROMISING START..........2003-08-03

Zevon's first solo album comes no where near the brilliance or polish of later efforts (those efforts beginning with what many wrongfully consider his debut album, the Jackson Browne produced "Warren Zevon"), but the spark of what lie ahead is here.

"Tule's Blues," is a pretty folk rock song about an ex-girlfriend, and the riff on "Gorilla" is a nascient version of that militaristic funk that would later churn through later cuts like "Jungle Work" and "Boom Boom Mancini." Other cuts of interest are "She Quit Me" (later remade as "He Quite Me" for the film "Midnight Cowboy") and what sounds like a drunken bar band version of "Iko Iko" that won't give either the Dixie Cups or the Grateful Dead anything to lose sleep over.

The real stand-out, however, is "Bullet for Ramona," a country song about a lost love that's lost because the protagonist shot her. This is the first glimpse of Zevon's killer sense of dark humor that flavors his songs up to this day. Of all the cuts here, "Ramona" is the only one that deserves inclusion on a "best of" or biographical compilation.

Should you buy this album? If you're a Zevon fan, yes. Others might better try to borrow a fan's copy to listen to "Ramona," and save their money for the Excitable Boy's other albums.

2 out of 5 stars Uneven solo debut from outstanding talent.......2003-05-08

Reissued and remastered, Wanted: Dead or Alive (ironically titled given the circumstances under which it has been reissued)features glimmers of Zevon's talent. His songwriting became more confident by the time of his self titled solo album in 1976. There aren't any bonus tracks but the sound quality is slightly better than the previously issued edition.

The title track and a couple of the other originals here make this worthwhile for long time and hardcore Zevon fans. I'd suggest Zevirgins and the curious stick to Warren Zevon, Excitable Boy, Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School, Mr. Bad Example, Sentimental Hygiene and Life'll Kill Ya. My Ride's Here always has very strong songwriting and performing as well.

Sadly, Zevon's great live album Stand in the Fire hasn't been reissued yet. I finally caught Zevon on the tour to support Bad Luck (Stand was recorded during that tour)at the Old Wardorf in San Francisco. Not much has been said about Zevon's skills as a live performer. Quite simply, he's an amazing singer/songwriter. The emotions that inspired him to write many of his best tunes continued to be evident on later tours as well. He managed to instill each song with unique performance each and every time.

Recorded after Zevon's short stint in Lyme & Cybelle and after serving as music director for one of the Everlys, Wanted has enough sparkle to it to make it worthwhile after investigating the Zevon's best albums. Incidently, if picking up every album seems a bit much, I'd recommend the Rhino boxed set released 5 or 6 years ago. It manages to distill the essence of each important album while adding a number of goofy singles, songs written for television and unreleased tracks onto two packed CDs.

2 out of 5 stars Thank God it was a cheap used disc!.......2007-03-09

I just had to have a copy of Warren doing "IKO IKO".
Other than that, this is a very weird album even for ZEVON.

    2 out of 5 stars There's a reason Warren Zevon disowned this........2004-01-08

And it is because "Wanted Dead Or Alive" is an album of an artist still defining himself. "Bullet For Ramona," for example, was carried from the Lyme and Cybelle sessions (see the "First Sessions" CD) and was given yet another reworking before it wound up in the "Midnight Cowboy" movie. There's even a song called "Gorilla," which hints at a favorite topic of WZ's (think "Gorilla You're a Desperado" or "Leave My Monkey Alone"), the animal traits we hide in ourselves.

But like John Mellencamp's "Chestnut Street Incident," "Wanted Dead Or Alive" trapped an artist with a record he probably wishes he could scorch from the face of the planet. Not that it's bad, just that it's a poor representation of who Warren Zevon, in another five or six years, would grow into as a musician. If you really want to hear where Warren found his voice, start with "Warren Zevon" and listen to "Carmelita" and "Frank and Jessie James."

    1 out of 5 stars Rough Demo.......2004-01-01

I appreciate Warren Zevon's talents as a musician. However, this first recording is extremely unpolished. The instrumental tones are annoyingly jangled. And the songs are quite forgetable. Even the cover of Iko Iko is nothing special.

After one listen, most music fans will certainly pass on this. That is if you do make it through a listen without developing a migraine headache!

2 out of 5 stars Hard to listen to, but not worthless.......2003-09-26

Most fans of Warren Zevon probably know that he would have been just as happy if this album dissappeared from the face of the earth completely. I can sort of see why, although it is a rather, uh, interesting listen. The most annoying thing about this album is the way he uses his voice. While he does have that familiar deep rich voice Zevon fans know and love, he sings with vibrato way more than he should, making him sound as if he had been cross bred with Joan Baez (actually put your Joan Baez albums on the turntable and turn the pitch as flat as it could go, and you would have a pretty good idea of what to expect from "Wanted Dead Or Alive."). Only for the curious and completists.

2 out of 5 stars Promise of things to come..........2003-09-09

Get this only if you are really into Warren and want everything. Past that, there are a couple nice moments here and there, but if he had put out more albums like this one, we wouldn't care.

      2 out of 5 stars It's an interesting idea............2006-12-28

....but it ultimately fails. I just can't get behind it. Everything seems off tempo or out of tune, and the violin or cello that is supposed to portray Jon's voice is just annoying and sounds closer to a cat in heat than Jon Bon Jovi.

      1 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi???.......2004-01-21

As a huge fan of Bon Jovi, I was mistaken in thinking this had anything to do with the group as opposed to the group writing these songs at one time - It's as if a string quartet of some pretty good musicians recorded Jovi's songs with a fiddle as Jon's voice - I'm sorry, but I should have done without.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning and pleasant surprise.......2003-12-06

I was browsing the music section of a store in October and under the Bon Jovi listing, I happened upon this tribute album. I had never heard of this before, and being the rabid fan that I am, as well as having an appreciation for classical music, I decided to pick it up. I wasn't really sure what to expect from it, as Jon Bon Jovi's voice can not be substituted by anything.

With that being said, I was blown away by this album. While it is true that some songs (Bed of Roses, Always, I'll Be There for You) would naturally translate into the smooth flowing music created by a string quartet, the tracks originally sounding harder (It's My Life, Everyday, Lay Your Hands On Me) take on a flavor all their own.

If you have never listened to Bon Jovi before (shame on you two or three people), I advise you to listen to the original songs, then see how well they have translated into this form. For the rest of us, who already know how many faces have been seen and all of us who have been rocked, get this disc while it lasts.

      5 out of 5 stars "A true Hip-Hop classic, dead or alive"!.......2005-08-28

On Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's 2nd classic album, they brought us more of that classic 1990's Hip-Hop from "The Streets of New York". G Rap delivers lyrically (as usual) and the beats are ILL! On the track "MONEY IN THE BANK" G Rap recruits no other than "Freddie Foxx/Bumpy Knuckles", "Ant Live" and "Large Professor" and together make one hell of an underground, hard-core classic! And nothing on this CD falls less than classic! A Hip-Hop gem!

5 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop Legend in His Own Time.......2004-09-02

Simply stated, Kool G. Rap is one of the greatest rappers that has ever lived. This is unquestionably his greatest work, although Road To the Riches is a very close second. This album can be interpreted as Hip-Hop 101. His rapid fire style provided the foundation for so many contemporary MC's. I recall playing the album one night after it was released with some friends and we played it two times in a row, mostly sitting in silence as we were awed by his craftmanship. In 30 years when I tell my grandchildren about Hip-Hop this will be one of the few CD's that I will play.

      5 out of 5 stars ABSOULETY CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!.......2004-04-16

1990 was a TREMENDOUS year for hip hop music, as I've said many times before. Kool G. Rap, fresh off of his tight debut album, Road To The Riches, returned to the scene with his second album, Wanted Dead Or Alive. This album features G.Rap at his absolute best, telling stories, kicking street knowledge, talking to the ladies, battling, you name it, it's all here and then some. Most fans might not remember this album, but I DO, and it's certainly one of his best. You don't hear records like this no more. Here's the review:

Album Highlights: The ENTIRE album, with NO filler.

Production: Thumbs up. He did a couple of songs himself, with other tracks produced by Marley Marl, Large Professor, and Eric B.

Lyrics and Subject Matter: Thumbs way way up. Peep the gems "Streets of New York", "Wanted Dead Or Alive", "Death Wish", "Kool Is Back", and "Play It Again Polo." Battling and storytelling at it's best.

      Originality: Thumbs up.

The Last Word: Kool G.Rap did what not too many other MCs can say they did: his second album succeeded in taking the first. This album not only TOOK the first album, but it BLEW IT AWAY and never looked back. Overall, G.Rap was in prime with this album, as it shows in EVERY song. This album may be his best, although it's STRONGLY CHALLENGED by his third album, Live And Let Die. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Don't sleep on this one.
