I really like this Cd, it's a classic, with the title track to be one of those that will live forever. I think Stereo MC's are also worth checking out for some of their other, underrated work.

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...the perfect melting pot of rap and funk. It's impossible to skip over even one track on this CD.

3 out of 5 stars A little unimaginative... but better than I expected........2006-02-23

Bought this CD for one track (connected)... a little early 90s nostalgia.

Not exactly one of my all time favorites, but a good CD for cleaning the house...

3 out of 5 stars Good Driving Music.......2005-09-23

I must say the only reason why I initially bought this album was because of the nostalgia of "Connected" and "Step It Up". After listening to the album though, I was pleased to discover a few gems like "Ground Level", "Playing With Fire" and "Pressure". But unfortunately those are the only songs that really stick out. The rest is just background lounge music. That said, this is still a decent album to listen to - especially on a long drive. I would have given this 2 stars out of 5, but I had to give it an extra star solely on the basis that this it is undeniably quite a creative and original record.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-07-26

I love the Stereo MC's because they provide me with what I feel is missing from most other Hip Hop & Hip Hop influenced Pop and that's good musical production, a variety of sounds and instruments, vocals & lyrics that don't rely on blatant swearing and mindless lyrics about "bitches and hoes", crime, drugs, etc...

I like all the tracks except 3, and the only thing I dont like about track 5 & 13 is the female vocals. My favourites are 1, 7 & 11. By the way, if you like these guys, you might also want to check out the Fun Lovin' Criminals.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best mid-late 90s electronica compilation albums ever..........2006-08-25

This soundtrack is great.... it really helped me discover electronic music in general. Growing up in the midwest, no radio stations actually played techno, house, or anything electronic except for the horrible 'pop/dance' stuff on a few sad sad channels. I remember downloading Mp3s using hotline in 1997 or so, and I'd que a few to download, then listen the next day. I knew I liked electronic music, as it as used in movies pretty often, but it was just so hard to find! The internet changed this. This album represents some of the best bands from the time period (Prodigy, Underworld, Orbital, etc) doing tracks that are now CLASSICS of the genre. Aside from perfectly fitting the film's fantasy world of graphical hacking (which is weird), this album is perfect for doing almost any work involving electronics, programming, or anything with computers. Same goes for hte soundtrack to the movie "Pi". Just pop in either of these CDs, and dive into your latest project. ALMOST every track on this disc is just phenominal, 10 years later.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for a song.......2006-07-10

What is the title of a song playing on the end titles/credits, just after "Heaven knows"? It's not specified in the subtitles and it isn't on the official soundtrack :/ Anybody knows?

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack!.......2006-05-24

If you liked the movie, you'll love this cd. The music is uptempo and full of energy!

While I was very happy with this CD, I'd even say that I liked Hackers 2 and Hackers 3 even more! All three are a great addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Re:.......2006-05-11

5 out of 5 stars What is the name of the track???.......2006-04-06

What is the name of the track that is playing while they are all in Grand Central Station in the pay phone booths??It starts out with keyboards and then the awesome guitar starts playing (I play guitar..kinda bias) I need to know the name of the track..or even the artist would help.. I WANT THAT TRACK!!!!!

Update, I have the track .. the whole thing plays during the end credits..but I still do not know the name of it..but dont matter now.. I HAVE IT.

Deep Down & Dirty is the fourth album from the Stereo MC's, though it could easily be their 10th, given the number of tracks that have hit the cutting-room floor in the intervening years. And yet just one listen to it makes it seem as if the U.K.'s premier crossover hip-hop act have never been away. The album's title track and lead single find rapper Rob Birch back in inspired form, freestyling those positive vibes over filthy, irresistible funk. "We Belong in This World Together" is a huge sing-along anthem; "Breeze" is dubbed-up urban soul with swirling atmospherics and Vocoder mumblings; "Traffic" is a colossal, up-front groove that culminates with Birch declaring, "It ain't easy, it ain't easy." Clearly not, but you'd never know from listening to this record. --Mike Pattenden

5 out of 5 stars YES YES YES.......2002-07-14

As music transcends words, as the rhythm defies definition, so will any review fail analyze this album. Not that there is some thing mysterious about it, nor dose it speak in tongues. I feel it is right to say that in this album the whole is much larger then the sum of the words written about it. It is complete in the sense that every track is good as a stand alone jewel, it is complete in the sense that combined together they are even better. This album IS about music, and there is little to add in term of labels, for any cataloging will fail dead in its tracks.
This album is not for the faint hart, for the seekers of serenity, it is not for those who listen to dwell in soft ambient light. It is hard and fast. It is the rock and the hard place.
It gave me many hours of pleasure. A pleasure that came from deep down inside.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD, and Stereo MC's other two, too..........2002-06-20

I bought Deep, Down & Dirty, loved it and played it non-stop
until I needed more. Then I bought Connected; same story. Then
I bought Supernatural American Mix.

Best rap I've ever heard. And deliciously, lusciously funky.
If only I could convince the ditzy DJ's I know to play this
stuff...

Highly recommended songs:
"The Right Effect" (Deep, Down & Dirty)
"Don't Let Up" (Connected)
"Declaration" (Supernatural)

Stereo Mc's
Deep Down and Dirty
Island/Universal

Over the years, Stereo MC's Connected would never left my cd player for months on end. One of the most entertaining live acts to come out of the early 90's, they opened and blew fellow alty-brats Jesus Jones out of the water when they appeared in Montreal to support the seminal release back in 1992. UK's premier crossover hip hop act release Deep Down and Dirty some nine years later only to show their absence has made them deeper, downer and dirtier and tighter with the funk. Rob Birch's unique commanding, half-rap, half-sung mantra is back along with an irresistible, filthy fusion of rap, funk, with stabs of dance rock blockin' beats. Lead off single/title track "Deep Down and Dirty" remind us of what made Connected such a refreshing, melting pot of booty shaking rhythm and rhyme. "We Belong In This World Together" a sing along anthem, reminds us about the positive/intelligent lyrical quotient the band is known for. "Breeze" and "Traffic" are the standout dubbed up urban tracks that highlight stellar levels of production along with the culmination of all the variables into a near flawless mix.

4 out of 5 stars Early 90s Fans Rejoice!.......2002-01-21

Its as if Stereo Mcs didnt take a break. As accessible as Connected, if not more, Deep plummets into crunchy, funky beats without being too much or not enough. "We Belong In This World Together" is a must hear for any fan who still believed a comeback would happen. The title track beeps and blips itself into your heart, while "Sophisticated" just simply makes you smile. While these songs wont win over everybody and break much ground in the world of laptops, drum machines, 20 or so soul singers, and vocoders, it will definitely win over those kids who dug "Connected" all 1,000 times they played it on MTV, K-Mart, and your favorite tv commercial. Thats deep, man.

5 out of 5 stars Funk, funk and mo' funk.......2001-11-17

Simply put, it's a Brit Hip-hop masterpiece--excellent
grrrrroves and heavy bass production.

If you have ever enjoyed anthing by the Stereo MC's then you will love this one. It's an interesting collection of new material presented in the classic Stereo MC's style. No low points on this disc. Take a chance on this and you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Stereo MC's In Paradise.......2007-06-10

I can't believe it---the Stereo MC's released a new studio album in 2005 called "Paradise," and I didn't even know about the album until now! Well, the fact of the matter is that "Paradise" has not been released in the States, so there you go. But better late than never! The latest offering from Rob B & the gang, "Paradise" sees the group easing back on the beats & grooves a little bit, going for a cooler, smoother, laid-back kind of sound. Mind you, the Stereo MC's are no slouches when it comes to beats & grooves, and "Paradise" still has plenty of catchy stuff on it to spare, but it just isn't *as* slamming or as pumped-up as their stuff from the past. Nevertheless, "Paradise" is still high quality dance-pop/hip-hop as only the Stereo MC's can do it. Tracks like "Warhead," "Don't Know," "Float On," "Breathe Out," and the instrumental "Out Of Control" still get the head bobbin' and the fingers snappin'. Rob B's commanding voice still grabs your attention, and the album's production & sound is first-rate (the Stereo MC's are veteran studio wizards, after all!). I'm disappointed that "Paradise" did not get a Stateside release, and I wish I had bought (and reviewed) the album back in 2005. So listen up, Stereo MC's fans (especially if you live in North America): "Paradise" is worth every penny of the import price, so buy it! And thank you, Rob B & company, for making another great album.

Unlike the other artists featured in the esteemed DJ-Kicks series, the Stereo MCs' style is more difficult to pin down. With Andrea Parker listeners expected--and got--a dark electro and hip-hop workout; Kemistry and Storm provided an intro to heady drum & bass; and Kruder and Dorfmeister and the Thievery Corporation further explored their murky worlds of stoned head-trips. But the Stereo MCs, who first exploded with the single "Connected," move from the sumptuous jungle of Red Snapper to the blunted beats of Herbaliser and the old-school hip-hop of Freddy Fresh without blinking an eye. The collection is a study in eclectic range-funk, soul, big beat, and hip-hop; new and old come to the fore with little care for technical turntable wizardry. The approach has more in common with the Gilles Peterson school of mixing than, say, Richie Hawtin's flawless bridges. The point: it's the music, stupid. --Tricia Romano

4 out of 5 stars One of the best in a Great Series........2003-04-15

This cd has it's faults, it doesn't always flow the way you would like to think a mix should. I have come to reguard this as just another opinion in a very diverse whole of musical styles and influences. Hear the influences are mostly intramental, in a funky groove, uptempo, or in latin time. Drum and bass are thrown in at sparse intervals, rappers appear often enough to make the mix interesting and somewhat enjoyable(I question the inclusion of "Pharoh Intellect"). You can find fault with the mixing style but for me it didn't get in the way.

2 out of 5 stars great track selection, VERY poor djing (mixing).......2001-12-25

Listen to the 30 second song samples above, and you'll hear a great variety of beats, most a bit dark but quite funky. Stereo MCs have thrown together a lot of catchy, interesting tracks, and the album has enough changes in tempo and mood to keep ya guessing...
BUT, BUT, BUT... shabby mixing, man. That's what those 30 second samples don't reveal. I mean yikes, the transition from track 1 to 2 is an outright TRAINWRECK- S.MCs don't even attempt to mix the two songs, and it left quite a sour taste in my mouth from the get-go.
I'm a dj myself, and by no means any good in my opinion, but I would at least have the decency to MATCH THE BEATS on any mix album I'd put out. They do it again later in album, simply fading from one song to the next without beat matching, which may not be noticable to some, but I know one of the tracks, and the lack o' mix there was quite obvious to me. They do mix some tracks well, but hey, these beats aren't very complex, and there are too many holes in this mix album to be excused.
Cheers to Stereo Mc's for their choice of music; some excellent funk and hip-hop selections, but jeers for a poor showcase of beatmatching and overall dj skills. Man, I would consider my own djing skills as just above amatuer, and I could have whipped up most of this mix album- if that tells you anything.
Again, listen to the track samples to get a feel for the music selection.. but take it from me, the mixing here isn't anything to scream about. peace.

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2001-08-16

I really like Stereo Mc's, and this disc reflects their style well. However, the tracks didn't flow as smoothly together as I'd have liked, and I was surprised and EXTREMELY disappointed by the inclusion of track 15 which expresses some very blatant anti-gay bigotry. (Yes, I pay attention to lyrics, even on a disc like this.) Stereo Mc's normally being the crown princes of tolerance and uplifting themes in music, this came as quite a shock.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Series!!!.......2001-06-19

By far, the best of the Kicks series. This release is solid the entire way through, with incredible varied styles and turntable genius. If you are looking for music that makes you nod your head in uncontrollable agreement, this is it. A lot of the other DJ Kicks CD's in the series burn out about half way through. This one keeps the journey on task - you continue to guess and are not disappointed. Just excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2001-04-30

All around solid disc. Great educational blend of beats, overall worthy purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It.......2001-01-30

FreeStyler has got to be the catchiest track ever. When i go out on a Thursday night i always get the dj to play it for me as it always gets me going and ready for a good night out. The album is full of other top tunes that are equally as good as Freestyler. (check out Uprockin Beats) This album is a change from what is around at the oment and i recommend to everyone that you at least have a listen even if you have no intentions to buy

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2001-01-03

Just incredible, fast-paced, beyond energetic music. Blow your mind...... Love it, especially freestyler. Music perfect for going nuts to!

5 out of 5 stars B-boy's, Fly girls, get the CD..........2000-12-19

This CD is BIG in Europe, and it deserves five stars for the most part. However, I only listen to about four or five songs on the whole CD, because the rest pretty lame. Track #1, Uprocking Beats, is an awesome breakbeat song that has an off the hook video! B-Boys & Fly Girls is also a hit from the CD that is tight. Freestyler is another breakbeat song which really stands out. I usually don't listen to breakbeat that has vocals in it, but this one is the sh... and one of my favorite CD's that I've picked up in Europe.

5 out of 5 stars The best music ever.......2000-10-06

You must have this CD. In Europe this summer it was number 1 on all radio stations and on MTV Europe. It is the best music ever.

5 out of 5 stars FREESTYLIN' IN GERMANY.......2000-07-04

I HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS SONG HIT #1 IN GERMANY WHEN I WAS THERE, AND IT DESERVED IT SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT GOT SENT TO #2--BON JOVI. THE FUNKY BASS AND TIGHT SCRATCHWORK MAKE THE CD AMAZING.

5 out of 5 stars Great music for hanging out, hoppin around or basically anything groovy.......2005-08-18

I love the tune "Connected" was pretty much blown away with the rest of that CD. They're ALL good tunes. So I ventured a bit with this album, and whoopah! It's awesome. I feel like I discovered a whole new genre.

Totally Hooked on MC's..

5 out of 5 stars The Best Rap Album Ever!.......2001-06-01

As I eagerly await the arrival of "Deep Down And Dirty," the Stereo MC's first new album in 9(!) years, I've been happily re-visiting the group's earlier releases recently, including this one, "Supernatural (The American Mix)." This album is, quite simply, the best rap record I've ever heard, bar none (and it's also the rap album that proves that you DON'T have to swear like a sailor to make an important statement in the rap medium). The tunes are all hip & slammin', with terrific beats, samples, production work, and the charismatic, very-British voice of Rob Birch (aka Rob B), who can easily lay claim to being the world's greatest rapper. He's also got a very cool, very smooth singing voice, too! I could listen to Rob rap & sing all day, 'cause he's got a GREAT, commanding presence at the mike. With such awesome, catchy songs as these, like "I'm A Believer," "Scene Of The Crime," the hit "Elevate My Mind," "Two Horse Town," "Lost In Music" & "The Other Side," you will not be able to resist bobbing your head, snappin' your fingers, and grooving along with this amazing disc. It's rap music for the mind & soul as well as the ears. The Stereo MC's are comin' back, y'all, and that's great cause for celebration! In the meantime, check out "Supernatural," and find out for yourself what makes this excellent English group so great. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Super.......2000-03-05

Yo conocia de ellos solo el tema "Connected", pero me decidi por este compact casi sin conocerlo, y debo decir que es super genial, el estilo de musica que mantienen. Ojala hoy siguieran editando cd's este grupo. Ex-ce-len-te

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good intro to the world of hybrid soul/jazz music.......2000-07-28

The rebirth of cool collection is a series of albums that include music that is not easily defined in one musical category. The music on rebirt of cool is what I'd like to call hybrid soul/jazz music, vol. 1 in this collection of tracks is a wonderful good to ,music that can't easily be boxed into one particular category. The Rebirth start off with Chameleon by the Jazz warriors, a lush, vibrant take on the Herbie Hancock classic. This version sounds quite different from the original.

Another song that is a favoriteon this album is the revival by Martine Girault. It's a classic club type of song with some serious vocals. My third favorite track is the innercity boundaries by the freestyle fellowship featuring daddy-o .(stetsasonic) Inner city boundaries sounds like someone reading slam poetry over a smooth jazz track. These tracks are very hard to define, because they really don't fit into any particular music category, hence the term hybrid soul/jazz. The other tracks are equally just as good as the ones i mentioned. If you are interested in music that isn't easily categorized pick up the rebirth of cool collection. On the whole

Amazing, turned me to probe deeper into my own being. Colorful blasts of poetry and rhythm, funk, soul, brother.....

5 out of 5 stars Masterpeice.......1999-11-19

This cd is fantasic! It's takes the funk and jazz greats, and puts an intresting new twist on them. Amazing! I love it! Buy! Buy!Buy!Buy!Buy!

5 out of 5 stars Grrrrrrreat!.......1999-02-25

I love this CD! Since my friend Kim turned me on to this CD series, I can't get enough. From the moment I bought #1, it quickly became one of my favorites. From there, I bought #2 and am on my way to acquiring the whole lot. I have Ronny Jordan's "Light to Dark," another favorite, if you don't have it, and you like your jazz funky, GET IT. The Rebirth of Cool series will round out any acid jazz collection nicely. If you like gettin' into a groove, than this is for you. This music is a voyage. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I sincere comment about Opaz work..........1998-07-03

I've been trying to follow Opazr work since 1st Rebirth of Cool, and I get very frustated when I don't find anything new from them. You've got to play it again...Sam ! By the way, the quality of the "sample" doesn't sound a bit what you are - do something to sound it better; more people will buy it. Good Luck and God Bless you all. I'm Brazilian and I just love your work - you've got to come to Brazil and feel our rhythm. It will enrich your song. Bye !!! Take care...
