This Clint Eastwood vanity-project was one of the biggest box office disappointments of 1997, despite a masterful performance by Kevin Spacey, Eastwood's typically subtle direction and, to these ears anyway, one of the most satisfying collections of songs gathered in service of a film in many a year. It didn't hurt that they were all penned by the late, great Johnny Mercer (a native of Savannah, GA, the film's locale and most crucial, underrated element) and with the exception of Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around" and Sinatra's classic "Summer Wind," were rendered by an all-star team of jazz players (Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Kevin Eubanks, Christian McBride among them) and an impressive line-up of vocalists including k.d. lang, Paula Cole, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Cassandra Wilson, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall, and Kevin Mahogany. Eastwood has long been a jazz devotee and, in recent years, eager proselytizer; this album plays like a love letter to one of his most beloved musicians and composers. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A must hear for everyone.......2007-05-20

I have several of these CDs in my collection. I keep one in the car, one in the home system and one for traveling.

It is, by far, the best soundtrack I have ever encountered...

5 out of 5 stars A Great Great Soundtrack Album.......2007-02-24

If you could buy only one CD this year, I have NO IDEA what it should be. Maybe you should get a second job, you deadbeat. But if you buy two CDs (without having to work in a salt mine, or sell Uncle Bob, piece by piece, for experiments), it should be two soundtracks: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and L.A. Confidential.

Dark, ethereal, and moody, these albums have an incredible presence, and hold together on their own as great albums, able to stand apart and peer out from beneath the long, great shadows cast by their respective, impressive film counterparts.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a Johnny Mercer 'songbook' as done by mostly modern artists, including Clint Eastwood, Midnight's director. This, of course, proves that Mr. Eastwood is a great ... director.

Actor Kevin Spacey fairs better, pulling off "That Old Black Magic" without a hitch. Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around" and Rosemary Clooney's "Fools Rush In" = Fabulous. But the stand-outs are Alison Krauss and k.d. lang. Krauss' "This Time the Dream's On Me" is absolutely, ... well, ... dreamy. "Skylark" as sung by Bobby Darin, is one of the great Croon Tunes, but when done here by k.d. lang, Darin gets the spanking he so richly deserves. lang's full, resonant voice fills the song with a warm, rich majesty.

Majesty, my friends.
It's good to be the king. And this album is king.
Worth the price of admission itself.

My suggestion: get both CDs, dim the lights, pour yourself a beverage or four, and listen to these two albums back to back.

Repeat as necessary.

4 out of 5 stars Best Jazz Vocal Ever and a Good Album.......2007-01-28

Alison Krauss's version of "This Time the Dreams on Me" unexpectly sets a new standard for female Jazz vocals. Simplely amazing that Ms. Krauss could blow away this old standard, none of the twang of her usual recordings, just amazing.

Otherwise a nice selction of jazz vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil Soundtrack.......2007-01-17

A very beautiful album of Johnny Mercer music

4 out of 5 stars Good and Evil is Mostly Good!.......2007-01-05

Very pleased with the music on this DVD. Only reservation is that I expected it to be a little closer to the actual score from the movie.

5 out of 5 stars This William T. Stromberg CD is Spectacular.......2006-10-19

This William T. Stromberg recording of GARDEN OF EVIL conducting the Moscow Symphony Orchestra is extraordinary. If you are unfamiliar with other Stromberg recordings I recommend you check this one out. It is superb in every respect. Bernard Herrmann's score is certainly wraithlike and groundbreaking considering GARDEN OF EVIL fits into the Western genre. This Stromberg digital recording elevates Herrmann's score to a place of prominence making it an important work that should be re-evaluated.

5 out of 5 stars Esoteric Western Score.......2006-10-19

It is unusual that Bernard Herrmann would compose a score for a Western. My son introduced me to Bernard Herrmann some time ago. I enjoy Bernard Herrmann's music to MARNIE and VERTIGO immensely and my son pointed out that the same composer, Bernard Herrmann, had scored both. This score is entirely different but it sounds wonderful just the same. I must say that I enjoyed the PRINCE OF PLAYERS selections much more than GARDEN OF EVIL. PRINCE OF PLAYERS sounds closer to some of the romantic elements found in both MARNIE and VERTIGO.

5 out of 5 stars Majestic and Impressive Score from Bernard Herrmann.......2002-01-07

William T. Stromberg conducting the Moscow Symphony Orchestra delivers a tour de force performance of Bernard Herrmann's esoteric score for the composer's only Western film GARDEN OF EVIL. This score is strangely moody and mysterious throughout yet contains outbreaks of pure power, which are clearly and technically reproduced by this unbelievable digital recording. The closest film to the Western genre that Herrmann ever composed was THE KENTUCKIAN yet both scores could not be more diametrically apart. THE KENTUCKIAN score contains many lyrical and melodic passages. Here with GARDEN OF EVIL Herrmann gives us mostly fragments or hints of a melody and continually keeps the flow off balance which is very unsettling. The entire film was unsettling. Director Henry Hathaway took a very minimal plot and twisted a tale of emotion driven by greed and ultimately survival. Every day the sun sets and it takes another lost soul each time. Bernard Herrmann's score brilliantly captures this sentiment. Selections from PRINCE OF PLAYERS are also on this CD. These have a much more tranquil and soothing quality than THE GARDEN OF EVIL and not having seen PRINCE OF PLAYERS I really want to see that film. However make no mistake about the fact that the star of this CD is the score to GARDEN OF EVIL. It is a brilliantly conceived composition and is one of Herrmann's most important and penetrating scores.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Digital Recording for GARDEN OF EVIL.......2000-11-17

1954's "GARDEN OF EVIL" is Bernard Herrmann's only true Western score and it is an interesting and important one. 1955's "THE KENTUCKIAN" also scored by Herrmann is set in the 1820s and is a true American "frontier adventure." This digital recording of "GARDEN OF EVIL" by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra conducted by William T. Stromberg is extraordinary. The original 20th Century Fox recording conducted by Bernard Herrmann that was issued is an equally excellent achievement. This new digital recording gives us the technological ability to hear this score as perhaps it was meant to be heard. I say this because this recording is very faithful to the original capturing every nuance and subtlety that Herrmann put into it. Both recordings stand on their own to what I believe to be esthetically equal footing. Only the technology of the masters is different. That difference allows us to appreciate "digitally" the power and fidelity of the orchestrations, which the original "analog" recordings could not capture. This Bernard Herrmann score is very low-key, yet it remains full of emotion and that is what makes its so interesting and important.

The film for which the score was written is very underrated. "GARDEN OF EVIL" directed by Henry Hathaway is a western rich with characterization that seems stereotypical on the surface, but on analysis, runs much deeper. Henry Hathaway is a director known for atmosphere, character and authentic locations. He combines mood and action. This film has all those elements. It is beautifully photographed, yet the picturesque landscapes are juxtaposed with disturbingly photographed death scenes, menacing ever-lurking Indians (always photographed from a distance) and even mysterious looking set designs. The church bell tower sprouting up from the dried lava is all that remains of the town outside the mine and is symbolically ominous in appearance. Frank Fenton's screenplay is filled with vague dialog and only adds to the total feeling of uneasiness that permeates this film. Bernard Herrmann's score accentuates the moodiness of this haunting adventure tale, itself also vague and non-specific always subconsciously playing on our fears and emotions. It is very untypical of the Hollywood western. Only a few minor cues play to our intellect of the Western genre, the rest is pure emotion. Herrmann achieved a recurrent sense of ominous fate throughout this entire film without the score ever tapping into the intellect of the viewer's familiarity of the psychological realm. It appeals to the emotional subconscious.

This is a major score by Bernard Herrmann and I rank this as one of his greatest. This CD also contains selections from Herrmann's score for "PRINCE OF PLAYERS." I have not seen this film for many years now. I did however, enjoy the selections from "PRINCE OF PLAYERS" very much. Some fit very much into Herrmann's Americana repartee while others have a tranquil uneasiness about them. These pieces are very interesting and remind me of some of Herrmann's concert work that was recently recorded by James Sedares. These are welcome additions for Bernard Herrmann enthusiasts. If you enjoy Herrmann's music you usually seek out every recording you can find. I highly recommend this CD because it is one of the best and ranks right next to the recent digital recording of Bernard Herrmann's and Alfred Newman's collaborative score for 1954's "THE EGYPTIAN." Also, I find it very paradoxical that the title alone "GARDEN OF EVIL" alludes it was meant for a Herrmann score given his popularity and renown for a certain genre. However, "GARDEN OF EVIL" is something of a conundrum of settings, atmospheres and most importantly human emotions and behavior. If you love Bernard Herrmann's music "GARDEN OF EVIL" is a MUST-HAVE recording. You have to hear it to believe it! I wish "GARDEN OF EVIL" will someday be released on DVD, in widescreen and stereo like it was originally released so we can all witness this remarkable film and score.

5 out of 5 stars Herrmann: Maestro of Musical Atmospheres.......1999-01-22

A Herrmann score may not necessarily reflect a catchy tune or uplifting song. No, a Herrmann score will transport the listener to another world where ghosts, monsters and unearthly aliens rule. His music will slice into your soul manipulating your thoughts and feelings. His music is more a palette of colorful orchestra ensembles than mere melodic lines layered as they are with rich patterns and phrases creating an oft-world malevolent atmosphere. Garden of Evil is no exception. It is an excursion into a landscape frought with dark valleys and unseen enemies leading down a deadly trail of pathos and doom! Listeners will then recognize that they have been here before associating this eeriely beautiful score with the familiar music of the Twilight Zone, several reputable Hitchcock films as well as the fantasy and science-fiction genre. If your taste is overtly contemporary this may not be you brand of butter, but if you appreciate innovation and atmosphere, you've reached the gates!

5 out of 5 stars The great Herrmann experiment!.......2003-04-12

While channel-surfing the other evening, I came upon the start of a movie on the Western Channel. The opening chords of the film's theme momentarily caught my attention; they sounded like the great Herrmann may have composed them. To my satisfaction, as the credits rolled, I saw the name of my favorite movie composer. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to watch the movie in question: "Garden of Evil". But, I knew that the first opportunity that I had, I would be purchasing the soundtrack.

My copy arrived yesterday and I it hasn't left my sound system.

What a wonderful find is this CD!

"Garden of Evil" comes across as an experiment in themes, tonal structure, and orchestral arrangement that Herrmann would explore in depth in future compositions. One can hear the beginnings of his music for "Psycho", "Jason and the Argonauts", "Vertigo", "Mysterious Island", "North by Northwest", and many of his other more notable scores. Only two tracks come close to being "traditional" for a western, and even they bear the undeniable Herrmann stamp of orchestral construction. The cut "The Wild Party" shows Herrmann as his most "schizophrenic".

Astute listeners can recognize cues that would later be used in various Twentieth Century Fox/Irwin Allen productions ("Lost in Space," "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", "The Time Tunnel"). Because Fox obviously owned the rights to the music, it could make use of Herrmann's work as background for its programming. The shows were only enhanced with the sound from a true master of film scoring.

The selections from "Prince of Players" and "King of the Khyber Rifles" are pure Herrmann and that is enough to be said.

5 out of 5 stars Esoteric Original Recording from Bernard Herrmann.......2002-01-16

This is the original recording of Bernard Herrmann's penetrating and esoteric score for the composer's only Western film GARDEN OF EVIL (providing you don't count his score for THE KENTUCKIAN, which has a rich Appalachian flavor and spirit running throughout). Conducted by Herrmann this score is strangely moody and mysterious throughout yet contains outbreaks of sheer energy that are clearly and technically reproduced from this original stereo recording. This is truly a historic recording for any collector of Herrmann's music. Every day the sun sets and it takes another soul seeking redemption in the process. Bernard Herrmann's score brilliantly captures this sentiment throughout with his use of rich orchestral color. Selections from PRINCE OF PLAYERS and KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES are also on this CD. GARDEN OF EVIL is a brilliantly conceived composition and is one of Herrmann's most important and perspicacious scores.

      5 out of 5 stars "Herrmann's multi-faceted musical career".......2000-10-22

In the early 1950s, we found our composer in a transition period, moving to California at the age of forty to be near and active in film composing. Meeting with Alfred Newman (music director) at 20th Century-Fox, engaged the volatile but brilliant Herrmann to score some of the studio's most romantic and dramatic films...thus our story begins.

Let's look at our first score - "GARDEN OF EVIL" (1954), Henry Hathaway film, starring Gary Cooper, Susan Hayward and Richard Widmark all looking for a gold mine. Herrmann opens with a powerful statement for brass, an ominous orchestral theme, suggesting barren forbidding landscape, and our composer hits the mark...dead on! Traditional western themes, spanish rhythms, masked with typical Herrmann dark hues, even Rita Moreno sings one of Herrmann's compositions...this twenty-four track score is worth the price of admission.

Next we have "PRINCE OF PLAYERS" (1955), chronicled the lives, fortunes and misfortunes of one of America's great theatrical families the Booths, starring Richard Burton, Raymond Massey and John Derek, as the family of John Wilkes Booth, who attained infamy as Abraham Lincoln's assassin. Herrmann loved this film and scored a memorable overture that combines theatrical fanfares with a stately march, later combined with 19th century incidental theater music, which emotionally is low-key drama, moving to high-Shakespearean moments, all the while blending sweet and melancholy themes, works perfectly as we know only too well, is "Pure Herrmann" at his finest hour.

Final score - "KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES" (1953), was the studios fourth CinemaScope film, the theme is India under British colonial rule (la Kipling) in 1857, starring Tyrone Power, Michael Rennie and the beautiful Terry Moore (Howard Hughes widow), setting was picturesque and Herrmann was attracted to the story-line. Opening main theme is exciting, with pounding drumbeats, screaming brass and shrill flutes indicating hard riding soldiers against the faux-indian panorama of mountains and desert (actually, was Long Pine, California), but you get the general idea. Our composer gently hints at indian themes, cleverly deploying woodwinds, harp and percussion...but the stand out is "The Storm" that the indian natives call (Hammer of God), is appropriately awesome, sweeping strings, pounding percussion with interwoven flute harmonies, brilliantly Herrmann.

Herrmann was kept busy from mid 1951 to late 1954, writing some of his best music for Fox productions..."movie-music collectors" this is a dream come true...more Bernard Herrmann, sit back and enjoy...once again thanks Varese Sarabande for this second volume!

5 out of 5 stars Garden of Evil: the genius of Bernard Herrmann.......2000-08-11

For years I have been anticipating the issue of Bernard Herrmann's score for Garden of Evil. Finally and fortunately that anticipation has come to fruition. This is not a re-recording. It is an original recording from the film's actual scoring sessions and is in stereo. I believe all 20th Century Fox films in cinemascope were made in stereo, thus that would include the recording of their scores as well. Almost all the entire score is present on this disc. Relative to when the recording was made I would say it sounds very good. The score itself is very low-key Herrmann and that is what makes its so interesting. The film for which the score was written is very underrated. Garden of Evil is a western rich with characterization that seems stereotypical on the surface, but on analysis, runs much deeper. Susan Hayward (an enigmatic heroine) hires a group of stranded travelers in a Mexican waterfront town to follow her to a remote mine where her husband is trapped. The adventurous group is comprised of Gary Cooper (the upright, moralistic hero), Richard Widmark (a cynical witticism spouting gambler), Victor Manuel Mendoza (the good-natured Mexican guide) and Cameron Mitchell (the back-shooting kid gunslinger). They must traverse perilous and dangerous Indian territory to get to the mine, but their motives are unclear. Is it the trapped man, the lure of gold or the subdued sexual attraction that Hayward exudes that drives them? The narrative is a study of personalities in conflict, their motivations, loyalties, cowardice and heroism. Richard Widmark's character comes off as the most interesting. He lingers in the viewer's mind long after the film is over and the question is raised - which is the more honorable: the moralistic hero or the dubiously elegant yet noble rogue? Bernard Herrmann's score accentuates the moodiness of this haunting adventure tale, itself also vague and non-specific. It is very untypical of the Hollywood western. This is by no means a minor score by Herrmann. He achieved a recurrent sense of ominous fate throughout this entire film without the score ever entering into the psychological realm. I rank this as one of his great scores.

This CD also contains selections from Herrmann's scores for King Of The Khyber Rifles and Prince Of Players. I have not seen either of these films for many years. I did enjoy the selections from Prince Of Players very much. They fit very much into Herrmann's Americana repartee. These are welcome additions for Bernard Herrmann enthusiasts. If you enjoy Herrmann's music you usually seek out every recording you can find. I highly recommend this CD.
