MC Lyte's career has proved uneven. When she sticks to her root sound--hard--she's at her best, but that hasn't always turned out to be the most commercially viable path. Besides, as De La Soul once rhymed, "[Forget] being hard, Posdnuos is complicated!" On Seven & Seven, Lyte takes all of this to heart, rhyming with attitude and working with producers that update the backing sound to fit into the times. It works best when the producer lets Lyte be hard and keeps the music interesting, as guest vocalist Missy Elliott does on the opening "In My Business." Not all of the producers here have the skills--or the taste--to pull it off, and Lyte's bevy of guests ensure that the album is uneven, especially when she follows their lead. Still, there are some real winners here, including "In My Business," "Want What I Got" (also featuring Elliott), a cover of Audio Two's classic "Top Billin'," and, surprisingly, the relaxed R&B jam "It's All Yours." --Randy Silver

Buckcherry reestablish their status as one of the most raucous and delightfully dirty-minded acts in the industry today with 15, a truly bombastic rock & roll blast. Vocalist Josh Todd leads this high-energy act into battle with the colossal one-two-three punch of "So Far," "Next 2 You," and "Out Of Line," each anchored by the weighty rhythm section of drummer Xavier Muriel and bassist Jimmy Ashhurst, then elevated by the Olympian guitar attack of Keith Nelson and Stevie D. But while an appropriate levity prevails on those tracks and others--such as "Crazy Bitch," "Broken Glass," and the good time stomp "Brooklyn"--the band also find time to show a more sensitive and mature side with the hit-worthy and country-inflected "Carousel," plus the unapologetically melancholy "Sorry." If there's a fault to be found on 15 it doesn't reveal itself easily, and if there's a fault to be found with Buckcherry it is perhaps that they imbue listeners with a zest for living. But that clearly is no crime. --Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description
The band who broke onto the national scene in 1999 returns. "I am playing the hell out of it. It combines all the best elements of Aerosmith and Guns N Roses in their prime" - Eddie Trunk (Q104 NYC syndicated radio host and VH1 Classic on-air personality). "Coming on like the Black Crowes by way of AC/DC, this LA-based band is at its best blasting its way through hard-hitting riff rockers" - Entertainment Weekly.

Yay a real rock album, instead of another whiney band! I really like it, refreshing ROCK.
Solid Rocker!!!!!.......2007-04-09
Bought the album a while back and had to put a very kind review.Fan of theirs since the self-tiltled album and glad they came back.Since the album came out,it has sold almost 1 million copies. Pretty good,I should say.Just a very solid mix of rockers and ballads. "So Far","Next 2 You","Everything","Crazy Bitch" & "Sunshine" are the standouts. If you love straight in-your-face rock, pick it up.

Relient K's fifth CD is a diverse modern rock album that's so varied at times it sounds like a mix tape. "Take the Fifth" pulses with lush, Beach Boys-y harmonies, "Forgiven" is a piano-driven tune that sounds like early U2, and the dueling guitar feedback that opens "I Need You" displays deeper punk rock heaviosity. "Faking My Own Suicide"--a great tune powered by Death Cabby vocals, ironic yet playful lyrics, and a killer classic rock organ--seems destined for a movie soundtrack. The true standout is of course "Deathbed," an intense eleven minute ode to regret co-starring Jon Foreman of Switchfoot. Relient K have not only weathered lineup changes (the bassist and guitarist are new here) and mainstream success without "selling out" and foregoing their introspective messages of faith and hope. But they've made the best album in their career in the process. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:
Same old Relient K.......2007-07-12
I was excited to finally get this cd after all the buzz about it. However I found myself a little empty after I listened to it. It had good lyrics although not as good as some of their previous albums and it had the good Relient K sound and I enjoyed it. I loved must have something right, the best thing and Give until theres nothing left. My only problem is that all the songs seemed to follow the same format and they didn't place many things to make the chourus or other lines differen then the previous. Other than that the cd's great.
Not the Relient K I know.......2007-07-05
I'm a long-time Relient K fan, but this new album just doesn't do anything for me. I was deeply disappointed in the music and the lyrics.
Some of the songs have that intentional ambiguity that song writers use to try to get secular air time. The most common technique is to write a song that is unclear: is this to God or to a girl? For instance is "I must have done something right" to God or to a girl? I don't think that it makes complete sense either way. Getting a Christian message out to non-Christians is the point, but the problem is that it means that people who are not Christian will never get the message.
A lot of the songs are talking about how messed up he is. Recognizing our brokenness and need for a savior is a necessary step towards salvation, but the songs stop short of pointing to WHO we need. It just comes off being gloomy and hopeless. "Devastation and reform" is an exception. It does mention God as the answer to the devastation he has created.
The last song, called "Deathbed" is a rambling ballad that goes on for 11 minutes. It is about a man dying of lung cancer recounting how he had messed up his life with alcohol, smoking, a bad marriage and divorce. It has some valid points about the destruction caused by dad's abandoning their families, drinking and smoking, premarital sex, etc. But at the end they tag on something about how he accepted Christ so now it's all ok. What I am missing is any indication that Christ transformed his life. When did he make this decision to follow Christ? How did his life change? It seems like he just wasted his life on bad choices and just used Jesus as his ticket to heaven at the end. Maybe the song is a warning to not be like that, but the point is dulled by the happy ending.
But it gets worse. The song "Faking my own suicide" is just disturbed. Maybe I just don't get it, but I can't find anything redeeming about that song. Is it supposed to be funny? Making light of suicide is not something I can appreciate.
Great new CD from Relient K!.......2007-07-05
This is a really good CD for anyone who likes Relient K's style that varies from punk to acapella... It follows the styles of many of their past CDS but also brings in some totally new styles... awesome album!
Another masterpiece.......2007-06-20
Relient K has been very consistent over the years, and remarkably, they have again raised the bar. This collection of songs rocks, in its entirety. Except for one 15-second interlude, every song is iPod-worthy. The album's opening track "Plead the Fifth" finds the guys skillfully harmonizing a cappella, Beach Boys style. Too bad it's only a minute and thirteen seconds long as it leaves the listener wanting more. The lead single, "Must Have Done Something Right" features a killer hook. Other strong tracks are "Forgiven" and "The Best Thing." The band finishes the album with a dramatic, eleven-minute song called "Deathbed", which tells the story of a man dying of lung cancer who reflects on his life and poor decisions, but recounts the night when he put his faith in Christ. And to top it off, Switchfoot's Jon Foreman sings the final verse. Enough said.
Some Good, Some Very Good, One Bad.......2007-06-15
Relient K is a group that has a sound that is very appealing to teenagers. My daughter really loves this CD.
I am more mixed on it. Most of the songs are good. A few are very good. A couple are silly or worse.
On the plus side, 'Forgiven' is really a terrific song. Another one that is very impressive is 'Deathbed' which is about a dying cancer patient reflecting back on life and considering Jesus. It is very long and quite a story. I had to listen to it a few times before it really caught on with me, but it is actually very good.
Lyrically, most of the songs are either quite positive or even expressly Christian.
One song that is quite silly is 'Crayons Can Melt On Us For All I Care'. It is meaningless. One song that I don't like at all is, 'Faking My Own Suicide.' It seems very out of place lyrically and style wise both. It is about a teenage breakup followed by the boy faking his own suicide to get the girl's attention and make her think that she loved him. This really should have been left off of this project.
With the exception of that song, the rest of this is a good album. In spite of that, I hesitate to recommend it because that one song is so inappropriate.

Genius.......2007-07-07
What else is there to say? Surjan Stevens is a genius. Certainly a musical genius, but possibly an all around genius. There are moments on this album that make me shake my head and want to cry they are so beautiful. The line "I have a sister somewhere in Detroit" emerges like a great black hawk at dawn, sucking us in, and dropping us down. (I have the vinyl and this comes at the end of side one.)
I must add that I listened to this album about half a dozen times on faith before it began to work its way under my skin. It's subtle and rich in its effect. Don't give up on it!! After listening about a dozen times I sat down one day and played it loud. All of a sudden it was as if I'd been hit with a hammer in the chest. Magical, truly magical.
A+ album!.......2007-07-04
Seriously a must-buy for any self-respecting folk music fan! In my opinion, this is Sufjan Stevens' best work and is in constant rotation in my car.
Ask yourself one question . . ........2007-04-16
Musically, I would say that the thing that many reviewers like most about this album is also what some might like least about it. If you want to know if you are going to enjoy this CD, ask yourself one question:
How much do I like the banjo?
If you love the twangy banjo sound and don't mind predictable / repetitive chords, than you are really going to like this album. If not, and you are used to listening to imaginative, layered electronic music, check out Illinoise by Stevens - which has a lot more instrumental range and complexity, and 22 songs - so you are more likely to find something you like. That said, there are a few gems on this album as well, such as Abraham & To be Alone with you.
Solid Sufjan.......2007-01-18
Good record. Holds its feel while being more varied than later albums. Great banjo work. Unique angle on Christian themes. Glad to own it.
One of my favorites.......2006-12-27
This album is one of my absolute favorites. I also own Illinoise - and cherish both. Sufjan's lyrical talent is beyond any praise I could type up on an amazon review. His writing is extremely spiritual and moving. The mood he sets with the various instruments (banjos, strings, etc) is original and intriguing. I can find a new reason to love him every time I listen.

After 7 is awesome.......2007-05-18
The Very Best of After 7 CD is great. The group is awesome, the music is great and it really helps your relax and soothe away the stress from the day. Listen to it while driving helps the traffic noise lessen. I love it. I purchased 2 and gave one as a gift to a friend.
'After 7' is the right time for some of that After 7.......2007-02-01
What can I say, I'm not a ballad person. But I ''l be the first one to sing a verse at any givin' time. So sad the group broke up, so happy that there hits didn't. "One Night" is my absolute favorite jam here. The lustful 'kiss me lips' "Heat Of The Movement" to the demanding wonderful, "Till You Do Me Right". This CD the S#%T! "Nights Like This" from 'THE FIVE HEARTBEATS' was just awesome. The only conplaint was the "Can't Stop" remix. There's another remix better than the one on here but they didn't put it on here. One major flaw. Other than that, this disc is in there whether you're "Ready Of Not".
Now this is good R&B.......2007-01-10
I remember when After 7 first burst onto the scene in 1989 with the huge hit Can't Stop. However it was their ballads that made the group very strong. Ready or Not, Can He Love You Like This, and Till You Do Me Right are all classic slow jams in their own right. However my two favorite After 7 songs would have to be Not Enough Hours In The Night and One Night. Not Enough Hours appeared on the 90210:Colleage Years soundtrack back in 94 and One Night is a sentimental slow that express's love at it's best. Other notable slow jams that appear on the disc include Gonna Love You Right, Night Like This and Baby I'm For Real. I hope we haven't heard the last of After 7 because this is what good R&B is all about.
The 'Very Best Of After 7'...........2006-06-23
....Could've been an ULTIMATE Collection if you substitute the
acapella version of 'Gonna Love You Right' with the regular studio
mix, and then add the following BONUS TRACKS....
13. 'Kickin' It'
14. 'Truly Something Special'
15. 'Damn Thing Called Love' (Soulshock Power Mix)
16. 'I Care 'Bout You' - Milestone ft.After 7
(fr.'Soulfood' SDTK)
and as a special BONUS TRACK, also include...
17. '24/7' - by Kevon Edmonds
The original 'Very Best Of After 7' was pretty good, and I agree
with all of the other reviews, but if you want to make a BETTER
compilation, add the tracks I mentioned. Folks are always trying
to borrow my 'Ultimate After 7 Collection' CD, but I have to say
"no my Brother, you gotta MAKE YOUR OWN!!!" LOL

love, romance, and desire.......2006-02-25
Well this is easily one of my favorite groups of the 80s. They had the class of DeBarge, but more of an adult sound. I had the biggest crush at the time on namely Babyface and Kevon Edmonds. The lyrics on the songs are so encredibly romantic and sincere, which I guess is a trademark of 'real Babyface', not the grown and sexy Babyface??? I have to agree with one above reviewer that stated the production on the album overshadowes the group. LA & Babyface were true masterminds when they put an album togther. Every song is good on the cd, every one brings back fluttery memories of some silly crush I had at the time LOL. After 7 was a great soul singing group, they reminded of soulsters from the late 70s (O-Jays, Switch, DeBarge, EWandFire) its all here, you'll love it if you loved real R & B soul. My favorite cut is "Ready or Not", easily the best love song they made...I guess LA was in the throws of over-infatuated passion for Pebbles at the time. (all that I've got, I'll give you everything, I love you more than words can show ect ect....WOW you won't hear those lines anymore on black radio, touch this feel that, I'll go down and what have you...After 7 had class and romance. "Can't Stop" is an absolute JAM and the covers of "Nights like This, and Baby I'm for real" are fabulous. Its just too bad that once R & B became more 'edgey' they could not survive in the late 90s...Boys II Men kinda stole their audience. But now I think if they decided to make a comeback they'd be well accpeted if they got radio play, Anthony Hamilton is succeeding. Bottomline this is a must buy for a soul lover. It does not disspoint...

Although this is officially singer/fiddler Carrie Rodriguez's solo debut, her musical mentor Chip Taylor--with whom she has recorded three previous discs of duets--is an integral ingredient. Taylor wrote or co-wrote all but one track and is also the album's producer. With Seven Angels on a Bicycle, the partnership that worked so well on Red Dog Tracks, The Trouble With Humans, and Let's Leave This Town has yielded another winner. The songs shift between folk, country, and even jazz, the latter aided by the amazing Bill Frisell, whose delicate, restrained textures and effects create an introspective mood as much as Rodriguez's lovely, sensitive voice. Much of this atmospheric release floats by with barely-there percussion, haunting tunes, and a languid yet exquisite sense of subtlety rare in contemporary music. Rodriguez goes into hoedown mode only once--on the frisky "Never Going to Be Your Bride"--but her fiddle colors these songs in muted shades that perfectly enhance their emotional concerns. She's a stirring singer--somewhat like Suzanne Vega--whose vocal innocence in tracks like "This Kiss" provides a perfect counterpoint for lyrics predominantly concerned with lost love and lovers. This is a stark, beautiful set of pensive songs that results in a low-key jewel of an album made for listening, not dancing. The talented Rodriguez needs no further proof that she is very much ready for prime time. --Hal Horowitz

how low can you go.......2006-12-11
I have never heard such a boring, monotone style. This music is absolutely depressing.Music is supposed to make you feel good, not down.
This is "art" music, not real music. This could be one of the worst choices I have made in contempopary music.
Future Star.......2006-12-10
I'm new to Carrie Rodriguez, never have listened to her colaborations with Chip Taylor. I read a review somewhere on this release and took a chance.....very glad I did. I just can't get this one out of my CD player. For someone who hasn't been the lead singer very long, she nails it!! Clear distinct voice. Love the music, not your ordinary country sound at all. Can't wait for more from Carrie...alone.
Sublime.......2006-11-05
Sublime, delightful, a masterpiece.
A perfect work of Carrie, Frisell, Leisz and the rest of musicians.

this is the record nora jones was supposed to make. adult music. complex and very listenable. it keeps getting better. highly reccommended.
A Texas Fiddler Expands Her Horizons .......2006-10-12
Carrie Rodriguez is well known to me because of three excellent CD's she made with her collaborator and mentor, Chip Taylor, songwriter, professional gambler, and uncle of Angelina Jolie. The style of the two was mostly down-home folk and country. Carrie's Texas fiddle and twangy voice fit the music.
This CD is a stretch for Carrie. Most of the songs are more cosmic than country -- with a bit of India, jazz, and techno-pop. I like the songs best where her twang comes through most strongly with a background of guitar and banjo that could have been arranged by Ravi Shankar. (My wife, however, doesn't like this CD -- although she much enjoys the Taylor/Rodriguez collaborations.) Down home pickin' and Carrie's bluegrass fiddle really come to the fore only on "Never Gonna be Your Bride" and "I Don't Want to Play House Anymore" which may be the best song on the CD.
If you're a country fan you might test drive your taste for this by previewing "Seven Angels on a Bicycle" which is typical of the album as a whole. I like most of the tracks -- although some are a bit draggy and an additional uptempo number or two might have made the CD even stronger. On first listen, I like this CD, and Carrie's new direction. I'll see how it ages.

Extremely High Quality Jazz That's Also Fun.......2007-07-01
Wow! The players in Waverly Seven are all NYC "downtown" bandleaders. The music they play on their own CDs ranges from post-bop modern jazz (Joel Frahm) to "fourth stream" music (Manuel Valera) to eclectic big band and Brazilian music (Anat Cohen) to electronic African inspired jazz (Avishai Cohen). Yet here they are, together, playing songs recorded by Bobby Darin...and obviously lovin' it. There are gorgeous rare ballads (I Guess I'm Good For Nothing But The Blues - with Anat Cohen on Bass Clarinet), infrequently heard jumpin' tunes with breathtaking solos (Artificial Flowers)and respectful reinventions of modern jazz classics (like Nat Adderly's Work Song). From "Splish Splash" to "Skylark"...every track on this CD is a winner. Highly recommended.

The term "bubblegrunge" was coined to describe stuff like the Toadies, Collective Soul, and Seven Mary Three. It's not a complimentary term, and I was the one who coined it in the first place, so you can tell what direction we're going here. Then again, Seven Mary Three have a weird sort of Southern-rock authenticity to their Pearl Jam bluster (they're from Florida), which suggests they might have even more right to the sound than a dilettante like Eddie Vedder. By "Southern rock," though, I don't mean the Allmans or Skynyrd so much as Molly Hatchet. They should be .38 Special instead: a swamp-boogie hat act that throws on some pop hooks and sucks back the Yankee dollars. The hit here is cumbersome. Er, that is, the hit here is "Cumbersome." --Gavin McNett

I love this item I used to own the CD, but lkie all CDs, it got scratched; and I was only abel to hear songs 1-4. I can now enjoy the whole CD once again.
Southern Blend Of Modern Rock.......2006-12-30
Seven Mary Three just about does their own thing, but they do it well. I see them as part of a new version of Southern Rock that also includes acts like the Gin Blossums, Better Than Ezra, Dada, Four Star Mary, and others.
This album in particular resembles what Seven Mary Three is as well as shows effects of the nineties and grunge rock. They showed they could be hard on songs like My My and Water's Edge. They showed they could be emotional on Lame and Devil Boy. They showed off some interesting and extremely weird storytelling on many of their songs like Margaret and especially Roderigo.
Killer successful Platinum album by one of my favorite artists. Similar albums to this: Seven Mary Three's "Orange Avenue", Pound's "Same Old Life", Better Than Ezra's "Closer", and Stone Temple Pilots' "Core".

Comes off a bit...um...cumbersome.......2006-11-04
I'm a huge fan of the two singles off this album, `Cumbersome' and `Water's Edge' but I'm a little let down on the unoriginality of the rest of this album. Many of the songs sound very regurgitated. The lead singer's voice is decent and works well for songs like the aforementioned, but on songs like `Lame' (which is just that) he sounds out of place, shaky and uncertain. The only other songs I actually liked enough to listen to again were `My My' and `Anything' but even they are nothing new or anything special. Songs like `Lame' and `Roderigo' fumble in pure stupidity while `Devil Boy' just tries to hard, as does the closer `Favorite Dog'. I actually liked the concept behind `Punch in Punch Out', not so much as lyric-wise but the idea of singing over nothing but drums, it's different, but it just doesn't quite work like it should. All in all this album is only as good as its singles, and for two songs I can't say it's entirely worth the sticker price.
