5 out of 5 stars Excellent album!.......1999-08-09

This album is part Ivan-style dance, and part Devo-style humour. I've heard three other Sparks albums, all from different stages of their career, and all have appealed to me. Check 'em out!

5 out of 5 stars Insane Genius At Its Best!!!.......1998-11-04

In the tradition of Danny Elfman and Frank Zappa, Sparks provides musical genius from another dimension. I consider this one of Sparks' finest albums, and a timeless treasure of listening pleasure. What can you say about an album that begins with "Gratuitous sax" and ends with "Senseless violins" other than WOW. The album combines great tunes with amazing lyrics. The Mael brothers seem able to turn anything into a song, as reflected by "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn" and "I thought I told you to wait in the car." In between the fun, there is some serious commentary, such as two of my favorites, "When do I get to sing 'My Way'" and "The ghost of Liberace." Find this album, buy this album, enjoy this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome.......1999-10-20

The song in itself is awesome, but after you meet the guys of the group, you realize that this isn't just a song for them....it's a way of life. They treat all of their fans with respect. They don't hide out on their bus when they do a concert, they hang out with the fans in the heat or the cold. They realize that this makes some of their fans memories for a lifetime. They have all great songs on their cd and they are wonderful guys. I hope everyone enjoys them as much as I do. If you can, go see them. It's more than worth it!!

    1 out of 5 stars What a waste!!.......1999-10-17

Look, I only gave this one star because I couldn't go any lower. This is nothing but sickningly sweet top-forty garbage. It has nothing to do with country and I'm offended that people think it does. Is this the backstreet boys with cowboy boots? I'm sure that if everyone buys it though people will be so wrapped up it's dulcet tones that all war will stop and people will all get along. This isn't music but Robbie Fulks is, get that.

5 out of 5 stars I think this is a great new group........1999-09-20

I really like this song and the group is so cool

5 out of 5 stars excellent for all the things that are happening in the world.......1999-06-21

excellent content for all of the violence that is happening in the world today. With all of the school shooting in the US in the past few months we really need some senseless kindness brought back in to our everyday lives. Instead of all the hussel and bussel. I cried the first time I heard this song and still get chills every time I hear it. I saw billboard sign the other day and it said...That thing love thy neibor I meant it...----GOD I really wish this song would go up in the billboard charts . It has a bold statement.

5 out of 5 stars hot and insperational!!!!.......1999-06-13

this band really knows how to touch your heart.. they are so honest in a world of deciet.. i really enjoy their music and believe they will do well...

          5 out of 5 stars Maxximum Entertainment.......2000-01-13

I wish I could be as literate as some of the other reviewers but my musical vocabulary isn't strong enough to rave about this CD properly. Having heard this local band in person, I immediately purchased their CD and have been listening to it constantly ever since. There isn't a weak track on it and the harmonies are passionate. There are songs for all moods and all are extremely singable. Mark Redlich's "Wallflower's Lament" is gut wrenchingly intense and speaks to anyone who ever felt the pain of loneliness. Bo Johnson's song about a special poem on his fridge is wonderful and "Ingredients" is totally fun. These are four very talented musicians and I highly recommend those visiting Milwaukee to search them out.

5 out of 5 stars Incredable first album for a new band!.......1999-11-29

"Pop" is too generic a label to use for Random Maxx. As a band they define the word eclectic. Each song on "Senseless Beauty" has a different feeling. Sometimes the drums pound and the guitars scream or they may accent and support vocals that are powerful and meaningful. Emotions most song writers try to capture are presented to the listener using all of the nuances available to an artist. From the opening bars of a song Random Maxx uses phrasing, key changes, pace, tone, even the last chord, combined with well written lyrics to convey everything from humor to anger. Instrumentation styles vary from hard hitting rock to a softer folk feeling, even calypso, as appropriate for each song. Changing beats and rhythms keep this album from ever be classified as boring. "Senseless Beauty" is an awesome first release for a new band and each member Random Maxx should be commended.

          5 out of 5 stars INGREDIENTS IS A RIOT!.......1999-11-06

It's about time somebody came up with a good novelty song! I couldn't believe it when I heard it the first time. Barenaked Ladies meets They Might Be Giants... definitely a hoot. The other songs are great, too.

4 out of 5 stars Maximum Randomness from Random Maxx!.......1999-10-26

I've seen these guys in and around Milwaukee, and lemme tell ya, they're the best band around; an opinion backed up by the fact that Milwaukee's free alternative weekly newspaper (Shepherd Express Metro) is getting ready to announce the results from their annual "Best of Milwaukee" reader's poll, and the people of Milwaukee have named Random Maxx "Best New Band!" That being said, the only thing that stopped me from giving these guys a 5-star rating on their debut effort is it's regrettable breivity. These guys have got dozens of incredible original songs, and only seven seems a little short, but locally produced music is expensive, so I understand. The cd opens up with "Looks Good on You", one of my favorites from these guys. It's pure pop, high on hummability, low on velveeta. It'a always a show stopper live, and no less fun in recorded form. It moves from there to "The Longest Road" a more downbeat but still toe-tapping big rock tune. The layered guitars and spot-on background vocals are reminiscient of Queen, but with a contemporary edge. And never content to play the root of the dominant chord like most bassists do their whole careers, Bass player Matty Phillips shines in fretless form with a fluid countermelody to Lead Guitarist Mark Redlich's soaring passages. "Disbelief" is a harmony-heavy funk/rock number penned by the band's drummer/rhythm guitarist Jim Schweitzer. Lyrically smart and well-performed, this one'll pin your ears back with it's incredible solo-trading by Redlich and Phillips. Next it's "Irony", and it's rhythm guitarist/percussionist Bo Johnson's turn to shine. This song, displaying Johnson's keen ear for rhythm and meter shifts fluidly between a few interesting time signatures, and pays smart tribute lyrically to the subtle undercurrents of complex relationships. "Ingredients" is next, a hilarious number by Phillips, drawing lyrical inspiration from the ingredient label of a package of junk food! This one's gotta be heard to be believed, and it always get's an audience's attention. Next Redlich chimes in with "Wallflower's Lament," a song that changes dynamic tone throughout, matching the emotional ups and downs experienced by the song's protagonist, a passionate "wallflower," begging to be noticed. Finally, the band surprises yet again with its' incredible versatility by covering "Carey," a folk tune by grammy award winning singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. But in the hands of Random Maxx, the song becomes a lithe, snappy island tune, complete with caribbean style-percussion and a lead line that somehow manages to make an electric guitar sound like a dobro. All in all, further songs on this CD would have continued to display this bands incredible comfort with a wide variety of styles, but "Senseless Beauty" does a more than adequate job of giving listeners a tast of what this amazing group is capable of. I can't wait for the next release! But in the meantime, I'll go to as many shows as I can to watch these guys pick up each other's instruments, and take turns at the lead mike. If in Milwaukee, you should too. It'd be advisable to catch these guys at an intimate local venue before they get snapped up by a label and the tickets go sky-high!
