Great Music.......2007-05-19
This album shows Ms. Khan at her peak in the 80's. Great R & B music to relax by.
An Enjoyable 80's Snapshot.......2006-07-05
After the commercial disappointment of 1982's Grammy winning CHAKA KHAN (which featured her r&b top 5 remake of Michael Jackson's "Got To Be There"), Chaka came roaring back into gold and platinum album status with this mid-80's outing.
All the 80's production techniques are here: Scratches, loud snare drum machine sounds, buzzing synth patterns, and other special blips and bleeps associated with this decade. In the center of this "production" is the powerful voice of Chaka Khan, one of the few singers who can rise above any "everything including the kitchen sink" production techniques.
Lots of popular 80's acts make contributions to this album. Of course, there's the famous title track written by 80's icon Prince featuring performances by the legendary Stevie Wonder and rap pioneer Grandmaster Melle Mel. Pioneer electronic soul duo The System (whose biggest hit was 1987's "Don't Disturb This Groove") contributes "This Is My Night", while Arthur Baker lends his remixing skills to a wacky remake of Gary Wrights "My Love Is Alive". The synths and drum machines eventually become softer on a cover of Carole Bayer Sager's lone top 40 hit "Stronger Than Before" and the slow jam classic (and future Kanye West sample) "Through The Fire".
Overall, some parts of I FEEL FOR YOU are very dated, but it provides a good portriat of what was going on musically in the 1980s.
This is THE album........2006-01-16
1. "This Is My Night" - This track has stood the test of time. It's synth pulls from a Eurythmical place while Khan's voice is as silky as butter. This song is one of the greatest dance compositions of all time.
2. "Stronger Than Before" - A great song that is the least of the greatest on this LP. A great attempt at a less than poor composition.
3. "My Love Is Alive" - Khan's vocal is slightly over-produced here, but it doesn't take away from this song's greatness.
4. "Eye To Eye" - This song rates a 9. Great listen.
5. "La Flamme" - A great synth riff adds to Khan's vocal.
6. "I Feel For You" - The Prince tune that lifted this album to it's heights. Mediocre lyrics are propelled by Khan's voice. I'm not a fan of rap, but this track's rap is as tolerable as it is memorable.
7. "Hold Her" - Wonderfully written and executed by Khan.
8. "Through The Fire" - Although this song has fallen into the campy world of wedding songs, that's a shame. This is a great song that seems written JUST for Khan to perform.
9. "Caught In The Act" - Second only to "This Is My Night", this song is grand dance tune.
10. "Chinatown" - This song is just great fun. You'll love it as much as I do.
Purchase this LP for fun that doesn't listen to be out dated.
I Feel For Chaka.......2004-10-17
This is an excellent album from Chaka. I highly recommend this album to anyone. What I like most about this album is that every track stands out. I wish more artists today would make albums like this. I truly do like every song, but there are days where you just want to hear certain songs. My favorite songs are Stronger Than Before, Eye To Eye, Caught In The Act, and Hold Her.
CHAKA WAS WAY AHEAD OF HER TIME - PURE 80s TECH-SOUL.......2004-06-16
Why are the reviewers bagging on Chaka's amazing, underrated cover of MY LOVE IS ALIVE? As produced by Arthur Baker collaborator JOHN ROBIE, MY LOVE IS ALIVE is MY favorite track on the entire CD, even better than I FEEL FOR YOU - Why? Robie's brilliant, minimal, Soulsonic Force-style grooves/edits provide TENSION against the fiery, fierce vocal ab libs of CHAKA - simply put, CHAKA HITS NOTES THAT AREN'T IN THE BOOK!!
In an age when most singers get by on flat, breathy lip-syncs, this CD harkens back to the old-school days when singers SANG! What is sad today is that most talented, influential singers like Chaka wouldn't even chart now! Other tracks shines also in a similar 80s electro/funk mode, THIS IS MY NIGHT, EYE TO EYE, and more - I got this LP when it FIRST came out and wore it out DJing at high school dances - two decades later, it's one of Chaka's most consistent, ground-breaking, most purely LISTENABLE albums she's ever recorded - Chaka has great taste in producers (Green Gartside of Scritti Politti, Arif Mardin, et al.), but WHERE IS A NEW CHAKA CD FOR US FANS? Please please please - let's not wait til 2005!!

"Feel the Peel" is a funky meal!.......2005-01-13
The rhythm section remains intact from "Rowdy Duty" with the other most noticeable difference is the absence of Jen Durkin's vocals. But has it really hurt them? I don't think so. This band can find a groove and make it bark like a dog. Go ahead and buy the disc; "Big Thing" is worth the price of admission alone.
Great groove!.......2002-12-21
I have played bass for 20 some years and i loveto listen to these guys! If you are a bass player or any musician for that matter than you need this and all dbb cds!
Feel the Peel - you ain't going to slip on it.......2001-09-19
I had never seen DBB before nor heard any of their music. I bought this out of the blue. Let's just say I was grooving from the beginning.
I understand those other reviewers who were looking for something more traditional from the band - of course, I have no frame of reference.
However, if you want something fun, groovy, movin, and with some variety then this is an album you want to have. Newcomer Hope's voice is like riding on a magic carpet. She delights with everynote and lyric that emanates.
Enjoy!
The Third Coming..........2001-08-10
"Feel the Peel" is Deep Banana Blackout's third attempt at attaining the "funk." This album is hard to judge, becuase those familiar with the band are familiar with their last album, a live, 2 disc concert called "Rowdy Duty." Rowdy Duty showcased the bands improvisational talents as well as their knack for just letting loose and jamming out. This was the band's style for the first five years or so of their existence. However, since the lead singer Jen Durkin left the band, their sound has changed slightly. With the addition of new comers Hope Clayborn(lead vocals and sax)and Brian Smith (trombone), DBB has worked to elevate their sound to the next level. Feel the Peel is a great example of the band taking their great music in raw form and producing it into a proffesional sounding album. However, by doing so, DBB has sacrificed that uncut, unproduced sound that got them to where they are today. Musically, Feel the Peel is excellent and is certainly worth purchasing. If you are used to their older style however, you may want to listen to the album before you buy it.
A step forward.......2001-08-03
Feel The Peel is a step forward for this band. I read a previous negative review of this disc, and I must disagree. I own their last disc, Rowdy Duty - a double-live CD, and it's quite good, but grows REALLY repetetive over 2 discs. I've also seen them live (with Jen Durkin) and felt the same thing. They'll get a good groove going and then basically play a variation of that for what seems like forever. The songs all followed the same basic structure, with little variation. (I assume that their inspiration was found in Parliament/Funkadelic, Tower of Power, and the JB's, but compared to those groups, these guys have a way to go). HOWEVER, this record is a nice change of pace. They are beginning to mix it up a little, and have some latin flavor(Everybody) as well as some much smoother soul tunes (Rocco's Lament) and some nice jazz flavored touches as well (Fire It Up). It's definitely not a sequel to "Rowdy Duty", but what seems like a new direction. Instead of just blaring the horns on every tune and trying to out-JB the JB's they are incorporating various new elements into the (new) songs. It's a very good disc, and I recommend it for those who like soul-based groove music that occasionally rocks. (I couldn't think of a better description...sorry).

A funkin' good time.......2003-06-01
While not as good as their first album Nosotros, nothing beats poppin' a Rubberneck CD into your car, rollin' down the window and goin' for a drive. Everytime these guys start making music together, it puts a smile on your face and makes you just happy to be alive.
rubberneck- funky funky funky.......2000-03-16
i cannot tell you enough about this album, latin acid jazz funk at its finest. check this one out- this is a very talented up and coming band. My personal pick is "Happi"- you'll be funkin all night!
Rubberneck - "Lunk" at it's finest.......1998-11-21
Latin soul meets Godzilla funk. That is how I describe what these six Portlanders have goin' on. Not one dull cut on this cd. From "FSN" to "Todo Pa Ti" to "Give me the funk". Very enjoyable sound and feeling. A must for the funky at heart.
Santana meets Tito Puente.......1998-06-12
Latin Funk, Chilean Funk, Power Funk, . . . a few of the feeble creative attempts at labeling this band. However, these quite miss the mark. Much as the Daddies, BBVD, and RCR have seized upon the swing scene, these six guys (plus a baby fro) simultaneously straddle the frontier cusp and retro roots of their music. While swing is definitely dominating the trend right now, don't be surprised to see a resurgeance of the Afro-Cuban/Latin big band sound made famous by Tito Puente, Desi Arnez, and Ray Barretto, among others. At the head of the class of this CD is the third track: Todo Para Ti. Opening with a haunting Spanish horn melody which evokes thoughts of Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain, the song quickly transitions to drummer Brian Foxworth's electric afro-cuban drumbeat, follows to a series of power solos by the individual musicians of the group, all the while bound and punctuated by the Ochoa brother's guitar and bass imagery inspired by their man Carlos. You'll find yourself quickly transported to a scene in pre-revolutionary Havana circa 1953. Other notable songs include Diga Me, a homage to Carlos Santana. Definitely worth checking out on CD, and more so live . . . a very heavy gig.

Good Funky Disco.......2003-04-17
Too bad this album is now out of print on CD. I'm glad I got my copy. If you like funky disco, you'd like this album. The reason why I got it was for the break beat anthem 'Down on The Avenue', which was on the Ultimate Breaks & Beats vinyl series. If you can find it used, definitely snatch the album.

Indeed Feel No Fret-This Is All Good........2005-09-14
Scotland's own Average White Band had been around for eight years at this point.Up until now their career had been marked by peaks and valleys-both huge commercial successes and critical acclaim as well as career slumps and the death of a founding memeber.Still SWB soldiered on and grew up.Seven albums later they came up with 'Feel No Fret' in 1979.With an album cover dressed in sky blue this album stands heavily in contrast to the soft pop and dance music dominating the radio at this point in time-and for AWB indeed the dawn of a new day.
'Feel No Fret' is in fact a fantastic album,in fact maybe among their best. The quality of the songcraft is very high and the music ranges from soulful to funky to breezily sweet. On the title track and "When Will You Be Mine" the bands gifts for a strong groove and a catchy tune are in full swing-both songs have that great Stuart/Gorrie rhythm section working in full swing and splendid vocal arrangements-not to mention being funky to the nines."Please Don't Fall In Love",the bouncy "Atlantic Avenue" and "Ace Of Hearts" look to a gentler state of mind but no less energetic, same goes for th pretty ballad "Too Late To Cry".The album rounds off with the dance oriented "Fire Burning".
It's not surprising at all the despite it's 1979 release that 'Feel No Fret' has nothing what so ever to do with disco. What is a little surprising is that none of the music here particularly sounds like it comes from the late 70's-an era marked by heavy electronics and often slick production. And those are great in the right hands but AWB opted to stick with their classic sound as they had since the beginning. And either in spite or because of this happy musical surprises such as this album were bound to fall from the sky and brighten ones day.
Feel No Fret- Buy this album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-07-11
On this 1979 album, the boys from the highlands are still churning out top quality precision grooves. On the song 'When will you be mine' Alan gorrie and Onnie McIntyre play some of the best guitar parts in the history of music (Quantized at birth)!! All this along with Hamish and the rest of the boys makes this an album that has amazed me every day since I first heard it (in 1979)! EVERY ONE IS A CLASSIC. Make these guys as rich as they deserve to be!!!!!
Feel No Fretter.......2002-03-25
Wow AWB do it again the boys from Scotland are without doubt the best soul/funk band to come out of the U.K. shores. hamish and Alan along with the Dundee Horns not forgetting Onnie are sheer magic when it comes to creating original soulful sweet music. Feel no Fret has everything, funkadelis and melodic music all on one sleeve, please buy you will not be dissapointed my soul brothers. keep the soul searching Tom Edinburgh
A more mature AWB.......2001-12-06
"Feel No Fret" lacks the kinetic energy of "AWB" and "Cut the Cake", but makes up for it with a more thoughtful (almost melancholy) bluesy sound.
Perhaps "Please don't fall in love" exemplifies this style best: funky and uptempo, which contrasts with the somber lyrics. This is also true of "Feel no Fret". "Walk on By" (a cover of the Burt Bacharach song) fits the album mood very well. I also like "Atlantic Avenue" (somehow this one reminds me of "The Girl from Ipanema" :-)), which is more carefree in tone. My favorite cut on the album is the upbeat "Ace of Hearts" which has a great string arrangement (by Arif Marden).
On the other hand, "Too Late to Cry" (that's Luther Vandross supplying background vocals) is a little too melancholy for my taste. "Fire Burning" and "When will you be mine" are similar to work done on earlier albums: upbeat tunes with bouncy lyrics.
I'd recommend this album to any AWB fan--a worthy addition to AWB's catalog that shows an evolution of the band's music and outlook.
Too Late to Cry-AWB.......2000-07-09
I don't think I ever heard this album, it couldn't have been too popular, because I was listening to all types of music "back in the day".
