A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

2 out of 5 stars Take a pass (on the album, not the buddah!).......2007-06-04

As much as I've always loved Geto Boys, Big Mike, and the whole 90s Houston and Rap-A-Lot scene, 3-2 is a rapper I've never been able to get into. His early Convicts album with Big Mike and Secrets of the Hidden Temple album with Blac Monks are solid albums, but as an MC I've always found 3-2 quite underwhelming, and this is especially true on this release. And that's really a shame, because "The Wicked Buddah Baby" is excellently produced. These beats are top-notch Houston productions, from the likes of Rap-A-Lot greats N.O. Joe, Mike Dean, and Swift. The songs have slow, rolling bass, some really nice funky instrumentals, and that signature woozy quality that will always be associated with Texas hip hop. These are perfect for riding and chilling. If these beats had been saved for Scarface, Big Mike, or even Willie D or Facemob, we might have some truly great material on our hands. But somehow, 3-2 ended up with these beats, and the product is simply disappointing. 3-2 is an average gangsta rapper, he raps about clothes, grindin', the hood, cars, and the typical subjects with little flair or style, and he's neither an enticing lyricist nor a really appealing character. But what really makes him hard to like is his flow. I find 3-2's voice really hard to take, and never so much as on "The Wicked Buddah Baby." His high voice is simply annoying, and when he sings the hooks in his pitchy drawl and holds notes, it's just short of awful. There are some nice tracks that 3-2 nearly ruins here with his performances. The tracklist is too long, most songs well exceeding five minutes. A few guest appearances from high profile MCs save the album from being terrible, but "The Wicked Buddah Baby" doesn't have much going for it outside the beats.

The intro has a cool beat but isn't worth listening to more than once, it's too long. "Comin' Down" is an upbeat ode to his region, musically good but lyrically average and poorly delivered, and the hook is weak. "Dressed 2 Kill" is slow rolling and well-produced, but I really feel like 3-2 brings this song down too, his day-in-the-hood and flossy lyrics are boring and his delivery and voice are hard to take. There are definitely some nice vibes on "My Sweet Trick," but as is too often the case on this album, 3-2 lowers the quality with boring rhymes and an annoying tone. The same goes for "Them Against Me," a funky and bouncy number. "Welcome to the Slab" is easily among the best songs here, but even on this song 3-2's performance is so disappointing. The beat is great, a quality laidback Houston track, but 3-2 raps poorly about nothing in particular and the hook is poor. "Turnin' Lane" is probably the most solid song, it's actually nice. The beat is funky and upbeat, and the lyrics about riding aren't amazing but match the vibe of the song nicely, South Side Playaz provide a nice guest appearance. "Kickin' Flowz" follows the album's trend: great beat, poor performance. "Hit the Highway" brings high-profile guest appearances from both Too Short and 8Ball & MJG, it's a decent song but nothing special. "You Wanna Ride" is pretty boring, despite UGK's guest. "Buddah Nature (Remix)" isn't at all memorable. The album closes with a banal six and a half minute outro.

There's a reason 3-2 isn't as well known as his contemporaries, and that's because he's an inferior MC. Add that with his annoying delivery and you have the recipe for, well, not much good. I think that 3-2 benefited foremost from knowing all the right people; he was able to get great producers and a Rap-A-Lot deal for his affiliation with Big Mike and Geto Boys, and later with DJ Screw and the Screwed Up Click. But he's really a run-of-the-mill rapper on this album. The beats are enjoyable enough, but you can find similar beats with vastly better raps on Big Mike's Somethin' Serious and U.G.K.'s Ridin' Dirty, among others. This just doesn't stack up with the 90s Rap-A-Lot discography that includes so many classics. It's long out of print too, so the high prices that this demands are ridiculous. This might have collector's value for some, but "The Wicked Buddah Baby" isn't an album I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The Blac Monk Funk has arrived on the Scene!.......2007-03-02

I've been a big fan of Three 2's work as a Convict and w/Blac Monks, but dude def. can put it down on his own. Took me forever to finally get a copy of this record, but it was worth the wait. Plenty of laid back flow from Tre Deuce on beats from Houston legends John Bido & Mike Dean. If you can ever manage to find this album for a reasonable price, i'de recommend coppin' it!

5 out of 5 stars Trill Gangsta Boogie Music From Lord 3-2.......2006-11-29

H-Town's own, Tre Deuce, hooks up with legendary producers like Swift, John Bido, Mike Dean and the always awesome N.O. Joe and delivers us with an album full of nathan but fire! The Wicked Buddah Baby is the quintessential rider album. His loc'd up flows and the awesome melodic G-Funk beats get you in the mood to tear the streets up. The album is fun to listen to, not too overly violent or depressing, he can get serious on tracks like "Them Against Me", but he can also be a little humorous and at times laid back on other tracks like "Kickin Flowz." Standout tracks include the relaxing "Buddah Nature (remix)," the bass heavy "Welcome tp the Slab," the sick rider anthem with UGK "Do You Wanna Ride," and "Comin' Down;" heck, just about everythang here slams! Rap-A-Lot is a legendary label and albums like this are testament to it!

5 out of 5 stars BLAC MONKS LEAD MAN, RELEASES AMAZING SOLO.......2006-02-04

MR. 3-2 IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED RAP ARTISTS OUT THERE. HE BROUGHT US "BLAC MONKS - SECRETS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE", WHICH I FIND TO BE ONE THE BEST UNDERGROUND ALBUMS IN RAP-A-LOT HISTORY, AND ONE OF THE BEST IN THE LAST DECADE OF SOUTHERN HIP-HOP. HE ALSO BROUGHT US "BLAC MONKS - NO MERCY", WHICH WAS NOT AS GOOD, BUT NOT BAD.

THIS ALBUM THOUGH, "THE WICKED BUDDAH BABY", IS A SMOOTH, WEED SMOKIN', DRINKIN', CHILLIN', AND RIDIN' CLASSIC. I PASSED THIS C.D. ABOUT 5 TIMES. I WAS LOOKING UP BLAC MONKS ON-LINE ONE DAY, AND NOTICED THAT THE MAIN RAPPER, WAS 3-2, SO I RAN DOWN TO THE LOCAL PAWN SHOP DOWNTOWN, AND I BOUGHT IT. $4.00. THAT'S IT. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST INVESTMENTS I EVER MADE. THIS GOES FOR ALMOST $40.00.

OBVIOUSLY, PEOPLE KNOW HOW GOOD IT IS. IT'S RARE, IT'S LONG, AND IT'S AMAZING. HERE IS HOW THE ALBUM GOES.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Straight up dope.......2000-08-05

WW rocks. No filler on this CD at all and very few guests, a little spanglish. Production by c-Gun is flawless and he doesn't even sample much. Very g-funk-ish but not all spare like Warren G, very interesting layers of synths, beats, bass and strings. K-owl flows like an uzi, he's dopeness incarnate! Get this if you were into Deathrow and looking for something good.

    5 out of 5 stars good.......1999-09-27

E.J.Trbovic: Drums Produced & Mastered by: Fran Ashcroft Reviews: "The Slightly Wicked West" is a great release. Love the production on it, really I was quite pleased! Great job on this release. Ron Burd, Music Director, CIUT-FM Radio Toronto SotoSoundz: The Slightly Wicked West Genre: Rock/Hard Rock. Rating by Kangar Radio: **** Another great disc from the people at SotoSoundz. This is a great little disc with the vocals from Karen Sotomayor. Karen has a great voice very close to Grace Slick of the early Jefferson Airplane. All in all it is again another great disc from SotoSoundz. One track that stands out is "What You'll Never Know" it has a great creepy feeling of going back in time to the early 70's. Andrew Allan Rating: ???? Dear Karen, Thank you so much, it has been a great pleasure listening and reviewing your music. You are very gifted !! Andrew Allan. Kangar Radio Int. "The Slightly Wicked West", Receives 5 Stars at MSN Music!!! THE SLIGHTLY WICKED WEST - IS A GAS!!! A great record...doesn't sound like anything else! Sounds great!
