That was FAST! AGAIN!.......2007-06-13
WOW! How fast was that. I order this and it arrived in 2 days....AWESOME!
Street Jams: Electric Funk, Vol. 1.......2005-10-28
I grew up on this stuff even though I'm only 16. All the songs blended hip-hip with techno. All the beats seem unique and exotic. They are all something that you don't hear in today's rap/hip-hop unless they use the beat. Missy Elliott got her "Lose Control" beat from the song "Clear" off this cd. This cd includes the mega hit "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force. Every song here is great and major part of rap/hip-hop history and culture but here are my top 5:
1.Planet Rock
2.Skanless Electric Funk Mega-Mix
3.Electric Kingdom
4.Clear
5.Jam on Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song)
As Good As Music Gets!.......2005-09-13
Many of the sounds on this CD are about as good as rap/hip hop/electronic funk gets. Planet Rock is close to musical perfection in my opinion. How I wish the hip hop scene of today would return to its musical roots.
Essential for fans.......2004-10-15
I can't praise this 4 cd set enough.
Sound quality is excellent, decent liner notes - fantastic track selection.
Part 1 includes "Planet Rock" (Afrika Bambaataa), "Play At Your Own Risk" (Planet Patrol) and "Rockit" (Herbie Hancock).
Parts 2, 3 and 4 include "Siberian Nights" (Twilight 22), "Egypt, Egypt" (The Egyptian Lover) "White Horse" (Laid Back), "Don't Stop The Rock" (Freestyle) So many classics and the "Skanless Electric Funk Megamixes" are brilliant!
Anyone with even a passing interest in this type of music would be advised to purchase this.
Awesome collection.......2001-06-10
This CD is awesome! I just got it a few days ago and cannot stop playing it. There are so many early freestyle and hip-hop hits on here. Of course, you could not have an electric funk compilation without the classic Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa, which was one of the earliest (And best) hip-hop songs. Play At Your Own Risk by Planet Patrol is very catchy and easily danceable. The two megamixes are unbelievably good, and I think they should have made a CD with one long megamix. Another classic on here is Herbie Hancock's Rockit, which is infectious and awesome to dance too. If you like good, danceable, catchy music, and you are interested in listening to some early dance music, pick up this awesome CD. You will not be disapointed.

OLD SCHOOL VOL. 1.......2006-08-13
THIS CD KEEPS YOU MOVIVING AND BRINGS YOU BACK IN THE DAY
The First of the Series.......2005-03-19
When I purchased this one I was happy to find that there were more to follow. I am not that old but this music takes you back to the times when music was music. I love these songs and I love listening to them over and over again. I bought this CD because of Double Dutch Bus and Square Bizz, but I like all the tracks now. A great buy and I highly recommend it.
When Music Was Music Back in the Day.......2004-05-23
Listening to these songs reminds me of the days when music was enjoyable and fun to listen and dance to. Most of the music on the charts detail lewd sex and violence. Some of the artists even have no bones about being arrested and having criminal records. It's a shame we don't shun some of the conduct that is portrayed in their lyrics.
Back In The Day.......2002-10-17
Even though I'm Not too much of a old timer, I still enjoy alot of the jams on this cd. It takes me back to when me & all my friends use to kick it! It was one of my favorit cd's then & it still is now. If you ask me the best tracks are: 2. Double Dutch Bus - Frankie Smith,7. Atomic Dog - George Clinton,9. Cutie Pie -One Way and 13. You Dropped The Bomb - Gap Band. I think all of the old school vol. have great jams; I just wished they had all your favorit hits all on one cd! I would recommend this cd to both the young & old.
Days of Old.......2002-09-16
All you 'Old Schoolaz'out there should add this one to your collection. Contains a mix of funk and some Old School Rap tracks (Whodini's...Five Minutes of Funk... and ...Friends...) I like all the tracks. Good CD, but could of been better if more Old Schoop Hip Hop was included. It's still a good CD!! Go out and get, jam it, and reminisce about the days of old.

Livin' in the 80's!.......2005-10-03
GREAT CD set!! I'm once again living in the 80's!!! My favorites are White Lines, LaDiDaDi, and Joy and Pain. It doesn't get any better than this.....
Good CD's .......2005-09-02
I got the box set for my birthday a couple years ago. All four CD's are pretty good. Some of my favorites are White Lines - Grand Master Flash, The Show - Doug E. Fresh, Childrens Story - Slick Rick, 6 N' The Mornin' - Ice T, Back to the Hotel - N 2 Deep, Freaky Tales - Too Short, and Aint no Future In Yo' Frontin - M.C. Breed.
Old School Rap, Vol 1-4.......2005-08-16
This box set really took me back to the good ol' days of the 1980's. I literally dance all around my room when I listen to the CD's! Each rap reminds me of a fun and special time in my life. This is a great collection! So many of the old school rappers are represented.A+++!
These young bucks don't know nuthin about REAL HIP HOP.......2004-10-22
I was looking at the reviews posted and I dont know what these people (kids) are talking about. I am a child of the 80's and I grew up listening to the songs on these albums. Every last one of the are bonafide hits-they rocked the parties I attended-and I still listen to them. Any real hip hop head would know not only the artists listed, (most of them have made songs that are considered classics) but they would also know the words to the songs. If you want a real education about real hip hop, buy this compilation. I didn't, because I already have all these songs, and most of them are on cassette-how about that. Don't let the other reviews deter you -these hits are timeless and were the hype before crunk and bling took over the culture.
Unknown DJ?.......2003-12-16
Grandmaster Flash an unknown DJ? That's why one reviewer slammed disc three. Jeez. Anyone who says that doesn't deserve to get to get to write a review about old school hip hop. Seriously. Do your homework. This mix is far from his best, but the fact that Flash mixed it makes this valuable to any fan of old school.
Man, I am still scratching my head. How does one of the most important pioneers of hip hop get relegated to the title of "unknown dj?" I think it is fascinating to see what were his favorite tracks, given that he more than likely influenced many of them.

A most have for all Old School Guys and Gals. All the hits on one CD. Only missing "The Smurf" by Tyrone Brunson. Get it today!!!!!
Beat! Beat! Beat!.......2001-07-28
I recently purchased this CD while looking for a compilation that included "Set it Off" by Strafe. I thought I might find one but that "Set it Off" would be the only good song on it. Luckily by chance I came across this CD. Every song is a great one. Classic "old school" is what this is all about. This has 13 songs some more popular than others but all heed the call to when some party-goer yelled out Can I Get A Beat? These songs are the granddaddy of today's rap and hip-hop but are worth every ounce of respect they get when they are still played at a party, in the schoolyard or someone cranking it out the car window.
It's Da Bomb.......1999-04-12
Go out and buy this CD RIGHT NOW!!! I picked it up in Florida and it's one of my all-time most reliable funk CDs.

Starting in 1982 with the release of Afrika Bambaataa's groundbreaking Planet Rock, Tommy Boy Records grew from one of many small, independent record labels to become one of the most influential urban music imprints of the 1980s. The Tommy Boy Story Vol. 1 keeps its focus tight, only looking at key releases from Tommy Boy's 1982-1988 era. However, there may be confusion, since Tommy Boy has no less than half a dozen different "greatest hits: compilations already out, many of which include the same songs. What distinguishes The Tommy Boy Story is its willingness to include a more holistic breakdown of the different genres that Tommmy Boy has promoted, meaning that it's not unusual on here for Bambaataa's disco-licious "Jazzy Sensations" to rub up against the Jonzun Crew's electro-funk classic "Pack Jam," or the Hi-NRG smash, "What's On Your Mind" by Information Society. The diversity and inclusiveness help give Story a more distinguished profile. But for the true Tommy Boy fan, this may not offer enough new angles to attract your eye. --Oliver Wang
Album Description
Indie powerhouse Tommy Boy records was born in Tom Silverman's NYC apartment in 1981 when the entrepreneurial trade mag publisher began releasing the best of the demos crossing his path. He struck gold with the label's revolutionary debut, Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force's "Planet Rock." One of the only 12" singles ever to sell 600,000+ copies, it laid the foundation for the genre-defining house that Tommy built. Tommy Boy and its stable of stars led the way as the first wave of hip-hop's artistic translation of urban street culture bcame a mass-appeal phenomenon. With repeated high-charting crossover success, Tommy Boy earned almost 80 gold and platinum citations, and the label's groundbreaking grooves are essential pillars of hip-hop, as evidenced in this new collection of many of their greatest early tracks.
Customer Reviews:
I HATED this stuff back in the day.......2007-05-16
I had the misfortune of being in my latter high school years when this stuff came out. By 1982-83, the beautiful, harmonic, and melodious Soul music of my youth was replaced by this ultra-syntesized soulless high-tech drek which I considered the dawn of the "dark ages of black music." Being able to distinguish between nostalgia and what was actually good, I'm one of the few who does not look on my HS years as any golden age of music.
When Tommy Boy and other record companies found out that (for some strange reason), young people were willing to pay money for what was essentially low-quality pre-programmed beats set to some silly chanting, R&B went on a long downhill slide until the recent advent of the neo Soul movement.
As for the "songs," "Planet Rock" was not awful for what it was. The beginning which simulates Bambaataa chanting to the cheers of a partying crowd makes me smile, and he adds some of his infectous personality in this which is unusual for such mechanical music.
"Pack Jam" like most of these other "songs" (?)is just a bunch of nothing. Some studio techincians calling themselves the "Jonzun Crew" (few of them were actual bands) chanting the title to some undistinguished programmed beats. "Play at Your Own Risk" is only distinguished by the incredibly witless chant near the end (Woof woof, hey buddy buddy-hey buddy buddy). Yes folks, once upon a time it had gotten THAT bad. We also get to ridiculous new lows with "Rock the House (They'll Never Be)" which the fools chant "Dig it, a dig it, a dig it, a get on down-ROCK THE HOUUUUSSE!" over and over. Back in the early 80s, this kind of junk made you want to chase after the kids who played this trash loudly on their boomboxes with baseball bats!
Fortuantely, such ignorant "music" (?) is now largely a deservedly forgotten memory and has (wisely) not reappeared in any kind of misguided nostalgia. Only hardcore hip hop historians and people too young to have had good taste when this stuff came out would buy something like this. May those days of ear pollution be gone forever like that other musical scourge of that time called heavy metal and one day, gangster (c)rap will join them.
Great old school - a gift for my husband.......2007-01-10
As a child of the 80s, perhaps its nostalgia that makes this stuff still so good to me. But another part of me will always believe that the originals will remain top notch. This is one of the best compilation CDs I've ran across.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT WHODINI , IS 20 YEARS AFTER THEIR DEBUT
THESE JAMS ARE STILL CLASSICS. FRIENDS , FREAKS , ONE LOVE , FUNKY BEAT , ESCAPE. TOO MANY JAMS TO LIST HERE. THEIR LIVE SHOWS
ARE STILL FANTASTIC , PLUS YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THE LYRICS. BEATS ARE FUNKY AS WELL. THESE GUYS ARE IN THE HIP HOP HALL OF FAME AND ARE LEGENDS! 80'S RAP WILL ALWAYS BE THE THE MOST RESPECTED , BECAUSE IT WAS FRESH , ORIGINAL , CREATIVE , AND DISS RECORDS WERE FOR FUN AND JOKING!
Whodini - Hip-Hop Hall of Famers.......2002-09-28
These kats had NY ablaze back in the day. Freaks come out at night, Big Mouth, Escape, One Love, Funky Beat, and Freinds..are just a few of the hits from this 3 man crew. If Run-Dmc didn't blow up like they did, Whodini would have reached that level...but they are still legends anyway!!
classic Jams.......2001-01-14
Whodini is a tight group.these jams never die.Whodini is something else.they had alot of Jams back in the day.this is a cool collection of there jams.this is classic Rap.

Customer Reviews:
The battle that's not complete.......2003-12-05
I enjoyed listening to the battles but D.J Red Alert forgot to include Kool Moe Dee on CD. That's one of the best battles of all time. Also,D.J Red Alert cut off the ending verse of UTFO and The Real Roxanne.
I miss Hip Hop like this.......2003-05-20
I just loved this CD. The battles were bad. I remember taping the shows on Friday & Saturday nights on WBLS back in the day. There was not a weekend show that I did not catch. I don't really care for hip hop now. Thanks for the memories.
Peace.

Customer Reviews:
old school.......2006-12-29
this is the best old school compliation cd that i have heard. each song reminded me of how this baby of hip hop has grown. don't leave the house without it.
Real Hip Hop.......2006-04-08
This is were Hip Hop originated from,if you like old school this is a must have.Especially those who grew up listening to Chuck Chill Out and Red Alert play these on the radio back in the day.Boogie Down Bronx Represents here!
Best history of hip hop CD available.......2001-07-10
Excellent anthology that covers the first years of hip hop/rap better than any other single CD available, with informative liner notes to put it all in context. The people who put this together have a good sense of history and including material from so many labels is a big plus. Everyone may have a favorite track that could have been added, but you can't fault what's here, although "Rapper's Delight" is the 4-minute-plus single edit and not the longer 12" version.
Awesome collection!.......2001-07-07
What a fun collection of classic hip-hop tracks! The two biggest classics are Rapper's Delight and Planet Rock (Many credit these two songs for starting the craze around rap), but there are tons of other hits from artists like Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Salt 'N Pepa, LL Cool J, Rob Base and tons more. This is a blast to listen to. A good companion buy would be Millenium Hip-Hop Party, which has almost every major hit not included on this album, but with only one or two repeats. This should definately be purchased by any hip-hop fan. It's a part of American musical history.
