Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-06-12
I don't know any French, but this album is amazing. It is on the WU-TANG level and there is even some WU in it. I can listen to this cd all day. The beats are unreal, and they have good flow.
One of my favorite hip hop albums. Ever........2006-11-30
I've been listening to this CD regularly since I bought it in France over 10 years ago. I can say that about maybe a handful of other CDs. La classe on dirait...
5 iron mics.......2006-09-24
IAM, one of the most legendary french rap group, alongside NTM and Fonky Family, single-handedly converted millions to hip hop with this album. A classic, ninja-themed album, with a strong Wu Tang afiliation, with so many gems. It's amazing but true, all sixteen tracks are instant classics. Besides Illmatic, it's about the only album I can honestly listen from start to finish and enjoy each track.
This album covers so much, touch on so many issues, in terms of how the media displays/promotes inner city youth's violence, about the limited artistic liberty of expression, the african roots of hip hop, and many other themes with depth but without sounding like a dry school book.
In fact, some of most memorable tracks are the funky ones, the ones where they just go with the flow and have fun with it.
This album sounds organic, with so many talented MCs variously spread accross tracks, it's as if they feed upon each other's vibe, and just succeed to maintain a balance between bravardo and social awareness.
The U.S had the Wu Tang, France had IAM, and it'll take something of a miracle before a group of emcees can take the throne from the lyrical shaolins of the golden era schooled in the art of the iron mic.
"Une musique pas faite pour cent personnes mais pour des millions."
Surely one of the top 10 hip-hop albums ever.......2005-07-12
In this country all our popular music is either American, British or Australian - I only managed to come across this through recommendation by a Frenchman (in Paris) makes you wonder what you might be missing out on!?
Anyhow, even though I only speak a little French I am still able to enjoy this album immensely, the beats, sampling, singing etc are incredible, very atmospheric - just about the best I've heard. The phrases I am able to understand seem quite philosophical.
Absolute A-grade music.
Classic.......2005-03-11
Hiphop at it's best. Even if you don't understand the lyrics.
lyrically, this is top notch.. even above most american rhymers.
it's deep and poetic but still raw.
musically, it's even better. The beats sound like a better and more catchy version of the traditional wu-sound. They even have wu-people featuring on a track (horribly outshined by the residents). Beatiful samples that complement the atmosphere of the track laced with fat ass drums and heavy bass. You can consider this the french illmatic, only this has 6 more tracks.
There are no annoying interludes, intro's or anything. They get started right away with the bombastic title track and don't slow down untill 16 songs later.
There is nothing to skip, it doesn't bore.. every track has a catchy beat, turntablism, impeccable flows and chorusses and is exactly the right length. That's something rap artists rarely manage to do (i could name maybe 15 american albums that achieve the same, at most), and pretty much no one that can do 16 tracks like that.
no matter what you think you know about the french, french rap or rap in general, you need this record. This is the art in it's purest and realest form. I've seen people that hate rap and listen classical dig this record, i've seen people raised on american rap havin their minds blown by this..

Hip Hop's Finest.......2004-02-03
I get upset when I see every other cd get a golden rating. It seems like any crap album out there could get 5 stars on Amazon, just because someone hears it once and concludes its virtuosity. But in my somewhat humble opinion, the highest praise for "L'Ecole" is 100% due. This album is up there with the best in hop-hop. I haven't heard anything better with the possible exceptions of Ready to Die or Paul's Boutique. Granted, my French isn't good enough to understand everything les mecs de la planette Mars are talking about or appreciate the overall lyrical quality -- but the flow (for lack of a better word) is just amazing. "Nes Sous La Meme Etoile" (Born Under the Same Star) is unbelieveable and several other of the first 7 tracks are almost as magical. I think any hip-hop fan would do him or herself a favor by picking this disc up (I haven't heard the new disc so I can't compare).
My favourite album.......2003-09-01
For 5 years,I hear these songs every weeks!L'ECOLE DU MICRO D'ARGENT is actually the only french rap record who is at the same level that West coast records and even better. The proof of it is that Kool G RAP stole an instrumental and isn't the only one.Lyrics are subtle and beats explosive!
Déjà plus d'un million d'albums vendus, la sortie du prochain cd devrait être un évènement national!
If you like this record, buy "CHRONIQUES DE MARS"!!!
Vive le rap marseillais par contre L'OM peut se faire enculer!
IAM rules the french rap.......2002-08-26
For now i'am are probably the most influental rappers in the french rap game. I'm from belgium and i speek just a little french and after a few time listening to petit frere i realised that the main rappers from IAM (shurik'n & akhenaton) are the french reincarnations of nas & tupac. Beats are very good to.
I think that some american rappers can learn something from the french rappers instead of making such a commercialised hiphop making some real hiphop. What "IAM" did whit this album was very strange cause their other releases "de la planete mars" & "ombre est lumiere" wherent that good (especialy "de la planete mars". Overall buy this album it's worth your money. Just stop bying commercial album's (DMX,dr.dre,eminem,etc.).
peace
MUST HAVE.......2002-01-12
Yo, I'm from The Netherlands and I really don't speak any French word, but this album is the bomb! The beats are so ...good! I think you can compare IAM's style with the Jedi Mind Tricks from United States, same style of production. You must have this! Also take a look at Shurik'n his solo album, named "Ou Je Vis", also great!!! Greetings from Holland, Europe
Music From The French Ghettos.......2001-09-24
This one of my favourite cds without any doubt. I am not a HipHop fan but this album should be in everyone's home if you speak french or like hiphop..
Nes sous la meme etoile and Petit Frere are some of the best songs in the album .. A Must buy

2 Masterpieces, an incredible price!!.......2006-11-03
What can i say, talk about IAM is kinda hard because there's no words for this group, They're Incredible!! the best Hip Hop group ever, if you want to listen some real Hip Hop, with real lyrics you got to buy this, L'ecole du micro d'argent (1997) for me is the best Rap album ever, 16 tracks, 16 masterpieces you can listen this album over and over, even if you dont understand french, the beats and the flows are so great you will love it. Revoir un printemps (2003) is IAM's latest album a more mature album, 18 tracks once again 18 masterpieces, this album is more relaxed and less aggresive but still a great album, on both album they have collabos with Wu-Tang members, believe me, no disrespect but IAM members outshine lyrically Method, Redman, Dreddy Krueger, Prodigal Sunn & Timbo King, i dont mean these artist are bad or something like that they are great, but is just to give you an idea of IAM's lyrical power, if you want to listen two of the best Rap albums ever, buy this, like i said 2 masterpieces, an incredible price.
