When people talk about the resurgent hip-hop underground of the late 1990s, they're usually talking about the West Coast, Northern Cali uprising--and when they talk about that movement, chances are good that, somewhere between Company Flow and the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, there will be some mention of Jurassic 5. Their self-titled EP features the group's deep lyrical skills flip-flopped with DJ Cut Chemist's supreme turntable compositions. ("Lesson 6: The Lecture" is a classic DJ cut, building a hip-hop collage of samples out of scraps from an old instructional music record.) The format is typical for '90s hip-hop--an oversize crew of rappers passing the ball back and forth--but the vibe from the six-man pack of Jurassic 5 is still something of a throwback to a Last Poets or Pharoahs block party. Piano and flute loops weave through tracks like "Jayou" and "Concrete Schoolyard" and bring you to a place of higher consciousness, but the place where the MC skills truly meet the DJ skills is the anomalous cut-up funk of "Action Satisfaction," in which J5 teach the true meaning of sharing. --Todd Levin

New Musical Express
Listening to the short and sweet Jurassic 5, it becomes clear what their West Coast cohort DJ Shadow is talking about when he bemoans the lack of experimentation and true lyrical skills in contemporary hip-hop. This, undoubtedly, is what we've been missing. Jurassic 5's models are pretty transparent, being chiefly the mellow loopiness and sunny disposition of the New York Native Tongues collective that threw up the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, and crucially, De La Soul. Indeed, the nastiest Jurassic 5 get is on a brief skit, "Sausage Gut," when they ask a friend to fetch them a sandwich and call them "fatso."

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

The thrill of invention never stops on this first full-length album from Jurassic 5. Coming out of L.A.'s kinetic hip-hop underground, the multitalented combo whips up an irresistible flow of charisma and keeps the fun at a high-voltage level. J5 can pivot on a dime from one style to the next--street-corner barbershop, turntable friction, or kick-ass swing. But the constant focus is on the essentials of the art: Quality Control fuses fantastic wordplay and MC skills with a killer grab bag of beats. It's the achievement of J5 to look back in a way so fresh it shines a light ahead. --Thomas May

Amazon.com

L.A.-based Jurassic 5 have unearthed the lost art of flow. With a style reminiscent of the Native Tongues, J5 delivers one of the most consistent rap albums in recent memory. Cuts like "The Influence" and "Great Expectations" exhibit a wonderfully organic quality that could help us all to forget the tired rap formulas of money, hoes, and gats. Comprised of four MC's and two DJs (DJ Nu-Mark and the legendary Cut Chemist), J5 is near Ellingtonian in size for a hip-hip troupe. The interplay between the members reeks of old school, the place where rap sounds honest and evolves as an art form. As well it should, because J5 aren't new to hip-hop; after all, they've been "rockin' since the '84 Fresh Fest." --Marc Calhoun

5 out of 5 stars SO much better than what you hear on the radio.......2006-07-12

I'll admit it, the first song I heard from J5 was "A Day At The Races" when I rented Tony Hawk's Underground, and I really liked their old-school sound. My library happened to have this cd in stock, so I checked it out without hessitation.

As you can obviously see, I was extremely impressed. I have become SO sick of today's hip-hop...It's no wonder all the punk rock kids at my school hate rap so much. They judge the entire genre on what they hear on the radio...GARBAGE. It's pretty sad how such a good genre of music has gone so far downhill over the past few years...

But this review is not meant to trash modern mainstream hip-hop, it's to praise this cd.

The first thing I noticed was the damn catchy beats. They are so original, and sound very different from one another, however, they all maintain that classic old-school style. The second thing I noticed was how well they flowed as a group. You would think that 4 MCs all rapping together would sound kinda choppy, but they take turns with the mic, and the transaction between each MC sounds clean and well-executed. What's more, they are very unified, and sound like one person when they rap in unison. Finally, their lyrics are intelligent, and don't praise money, gats, hoes, and all the other things hip-hop is criticized for.

So if you love old-school rap, or rap in general, this cd is a definate must-have. My favorite songs are "The Influence", "Great Expectations", "Quality Control", "Monkey Bars", "Jurass Finish First", and "Game".

Enjoy =)

5 out of 5 stars J5-QUALITY CONTROL.......2006-03-20

THIS IS THE BEST RAP CD I'VE EVER HEARD. THE BEATS AND RHYMES ARE EXCELLENT. J5'S BEST CD SO FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars "4 mc's at your door once more".......2006-03-12

This is my favorite rap album, easy. J5's sound is so pure, it flows like nothing you've ever heard. The beats are so original, and so damn fresh. The rhymes are rediculous, they just keep coming. The songs are a treat for your ears. This album will put you in a good mood no matter how bad your day is going. And these guys rap about stuff other than sex, drugs, and violence. They are truly the perfect group. Before I heard J5, rap didn't do much for me. All I heard was what was on TV. Eminem and 50 rappin about the same stuff over, and over. J5 blows the rest of the competition out of the water. My favorite tracks on this CD are Great Expectations, Lausd, The Influence, and Jurass Finish First. This album is what hip hop is all about, good times.

5 out of 5 stars I represent the real from the beginning to the end of it.......2006-03-02

This is the best HipHop group I've ever heard. The lyrics are incredible, original and with content not like 50 cent, Nelly, Ludacris etc etc etc all those fake MC's, J5 is real HipHop, they are the truth and they tell you the truth without those gangsta lyrics so common in HipHop nowadays. After I heard J5 for the first time I came to realise that this is real HipHop, this is what i was looking for, Jurassic 5 will make you heard the lyrics and try to understand them because they do have content. Every song is different and have different beats and lyrics, you cant get bored listening to Jurassic. I think is the perfect HipHop group, I dont see anything wrong on them, you just listen Quality Control and you will realise, songs like Lausd and Great Expectations (not only those all the album as well) make you realise what they are, they DO love HipHop, they DO make music for pleasure and for love not like others MC's or so called Mc's, they are not interested in money etc etc, they are just perfect. Quality Control is the best album they have so far but that doesnt mean that the others are bad because what I see in Jurassic is that they always keep it real, you can see that in the 3 albums they have not change for bad even more they have change for better, for example Chali 2na flow have improved so well that it will make flip out your seat and the lyrics always have kept the Underground flavour. Definitely if you like real non commercial HipHop you have to buy Jurassic 5 albums especially Quality Control.
HipHop is in good hands......as long as they rest on Jurassic 5 ones. Go J5!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best and most accessible rap albums ever - there's NOTHING you won't like here!.......2006-01-08

I'm going to make the claim that Jurassic 5 is the best rap group ever - not because they're the best lyricists or MCs, but because they're the most accessible. They're just extremely fun to listen to. Every MC here has a distinct personality (and they are Akil, Zaakir, Marc 7even and Chali 2na), and you'll love every one of them (I love the one with the deep voice the most (Chali 2na)). The lyrics are always fun and memorable, and the beats are very catchy and impressive. Every track here is wonderful and definitely memorable which is a hard thing to achieve (many rap albums also have VERY good songs, but they tend to not be that memorable after listening to them). Though I love many many rap artists (Ice Cube, Too $hort, Run-D.M.C., The Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Skee-Lo...), Jurassic 5 wins hands down as my favorite group. There's a high probability that most people will love this album (and to an extent their follow-up "Power In Numbers"). Highly recommended!

Two years after Jurassic 5's debut album, Quality Control, proved that B-boy-oriented retro-rap doesn't have to be corny, the six-member crew (four MCs and two DJs) seems to be gearing up for the revolution. While fans of Quality Control's bright sound will still find much to enjoy here, J5's sophomore offering does a good job at extending their sound. Opening with "Freedom," a quiet yet focused call to action, Power in Numbers presents a slightly darker vision of hip-hop nirvana than the group offered first time around. In keeping with the album's title, J5 has also expanded its crew--Percy P. (of the early-90s underground group, Double XX Posse) and Big Daddy Kane help wreck the G Rap-esque "A Day at the Races," and the always game alterna-diva, Nelly Furtado, lends a surprisingly effective pop edge to the bouncy "Thin Line." On the production end of things, Juju of the Beatnuts adds his special blend of Colombian madness to the jazzy "If You Only Knew" and the considerably bleaker "One of Them." --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars the only GOOD rap band!.......2006-07-09

wicked album guys. Got a pre release version of this with a blue cover and DVD and errors on the track listing due to the time limit of a couple of songs. Nelly Furtado guest stars on one of the songs! This is an awesome old school politically orientated rap band who care for our planet. Theve got a new album coming out soon as well. So i guess "Stay Tuned"

5 out of 5 stars Not *as* good as "Quality Control", but it's still an awesome rap album by J5!.......2006-01-14

Even though I like "Quality Control" a lot more, their follow-up, "Power In Numbers", is still a great rap album that you definitely ought to check out. It follows relatively the same formula as their debut, although the songs don't seem as inspired or creative as they did on "Quality Control". However, there are 17 tracks here, and all of them are good-if-not-great. Rappers Akil, Zaakir, Marc 7even and Chali 2na are a tad worse than they were on "Quality Control" (they feel less natural), but they're still great and extremely appealing. They still have that oldschool flow and delivery that is severaly missed in today's rap scene. Lyrically the songs are always a lot of fun to listen to, and some of the songs are even quotable. The lyrics are definitely fun to memorize and sing. Musically it's a little different sounding than "Quality Control", but the producer here still has a good eye for great hooks and beats. Though every song here is good, there are definitely several stand-out songs here which I would argue bump the album's rating up - "Sum Of Us", "High Fidelity", "Remember His Name" and "A Day At The Races", for example, are GREAT rap songs that are very very memorable. I'm pretty sure that within one or two listens that you'll either have these stuck in your head or that you'll remember them forever. Basically folks, if you like rap or Jurassic 5 then "Power In Numbers" is another classic album by this classic group. Absolutely recommended!

"Sum Of Us"

"A Day At The Races"
"High Fidelity"

5 out of 5 stars Great Music. Classic.......2005-12-06

If you don't have this album, you need to get this. Buy it, don't download it. Everyone needs to support good hip hop like this. Man, I first heard this at the end of 2002 I was captivated. The beats are a little grimier than the first ablum and the LP, but they still have that true hip hop sound, no club banger from that garbage 50 cent. The rhymes are clever and these guys mesh so well together. The rhymes are great, whether in a love/friendship story in Thin Line, to battle lyrics in One of Them, to old school flavord lyrics in A Day At the Races. They have great guests too. Legends Percee P, and Big Daddy Kane shine in A Day At The Races. They both showed that they still have it. Ju Ju spits fire at all of the glitz and glam mc's in One of Them (which thinking about it is pretty funny because the Beatnuts seem to be gearing towards that direction.) And a supriser, Nelly Furtado, pop superstar fits well in the song Thin Line. Get this, this group is in the same breath as both old school mc's in A Day At the Races, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang, you get the picture.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy Music.......2005-10-21

This is easily one of the best hip-hop albums I've ever heard. No one is out of place in the group. Jurassic 5 really gets back to the old school of big daddy kane and public enemy. Not only do their words have substance but the rhymes are on point! If you like cheap ghetto rap like g-unit or jay z with the catchy hooks, this ain't the album for you!

5 out of 5 stars I hate hip hop.......2005-08-13

To correct myself, it's a love/hate relationship. I grew up on Run DMC and The Beastie Boys, but I quickly lost interest in hip hop during the Mase, Puff Daddy and Biggy days. From that point to now, with all of the commercial so-called "gangster rap" and "durty south", I can easily tell you it's garbage. Because of the trash that soars through the hip hop mainstream, true noble rap has been forced underground.

Now take Jurassic 5, Power in Numbers, and you have great, true to the art form hip hop that sits next to Del, Hieroglyphics, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and DJ Quik. This album specifically, Power in Numbers, is an awesome follow up to Quality Control, one of my favorite albums. Although not as good as Quality Control, is an amazing sophomore product. The two DJ's don't fail to push out great old school beats whilst 4 MC's synthesize rhymes and kinetic flow over subjects more interesting than hoes and shooting people.

If you love rock, and hate hip hop, but have enough guts to find out what the hip hop underground is all about, pick up this album and help the rest of us enthusiasts bring the art back.

Summary: This album is a must-own.

It's understandable when artists want to grow their fan base in order to more easily make a living and also reach a larger group of listeners. The trick, of course, is how to do this without releasing artistically compromised records that, well, suck. L.A. underground vets J5 were almost a supergroup from the start, combining the formidable talents of the Unity and Rebels of Rhythm crews. If anyone deserves to move beyond the backpack clique, it's them (well, and Aceyalone). And while no one's going to condemn the band for pulling a Black Eyed Peas here, it's hard to imagine really listening to this album as much as its two predecessors, either. Take the lead single, "Work It Out": the jam has a smoove, down-tempo vibe that's nice enough, and the Dave Matthews vocal on the chorus is pretty excellent. But the lyrics--which deal with not only let's-get-back-together-baby material, but also vaguely PC hip-hop--never gel. It makes one yearn for the actual Daisy Age. There are a few outstanding tracks, but overall this is a hip-hop album that sounds as if it were written by a corporate committee--each song directed at a particular demographic--rather than a mini-manifesto crafted to get your fists pumping and/or your feet moving. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars still laid back hip-hop.......2007-07-24

without the cut and paste 5 star supremacy of "Quality" this is a group that adjusted well to the loss of cut chemist. the cut chemist fans trying to find fault with J5 will cut up this album. but meanwhile it is a high qulity album from start to finish

2 out of 5 stars Decent, but disappointing.......2007-01-03

I have always thought that Jurassic 5 was one of the smartest, most innovative hip-hop groups around, but I fear they may be losing ground. Feedback, their latest, lacks the creative spark and revolutionary attitude that made Quality Control such an original masterpiece. It comes off more as a typical commercial rap album.

It's not just that they are missing Cut Chemist, although that sure hurts. It's also that DJ Nu-Mark's beats are quite a bit cheesier than usual, veering away from his usual jazzy complexity, and running dangerously close to the dance club pulse of MTV-land. The album does feature the inexplicably catchy DMB collaboration Work It Out, which I have been singing under my breath for days, but let us remember that catchy is not the same as lyrically great.

So if you're a J5 fan, instead of Feedback, I suggest you pick up Nu Mark's solo album Hands On, which serves both as a showcase of his spinning talent and a rich museum of jazz, funk and world music. In fact, with support from Chali 2na, J Live and a few other hip-hop artists, that release comes a lot closer to the original spirit of J5 than this stuff.

3 out of 5 stars These ARE the same guys, right?.......2006-12-01

I'm sorry; are these the same group of intelligent hip-hoppers that had us listening while everyone else had their Nelly and Bow Wow? Well, yes and no: DJ Cut Chemist left the fold, so the rest of Jurassic 5 had to soldier on. But they could have done a lot better that Feedback.

There are a few live performances that impress though, like "Turn It Out" and especially the album's opener, "Back 4 U". The latter gives you the idea that this will be another stellar J5 journey, but immediately following that song is the blatant "Radio". And the problem isn't that J5 is trying to become mainstream because as reviewer DJ Benny pointed out, they've always been on Interscope (kinda like people calling Dilated Peoples underground yet they're on Capitol Records); it's the fact that a lot of the songs are so different from their usual style that it's a little hard to stomach.

I don't think the lead single "Work It Out" (with Dave Matthews Band) is all that bad; the only problem I really have with it is that even though Dave is only singing the chorus, the music makes it feel more like Dave Matthews Band featuring Jurassic 5 instead of the other way around. But as other reviewers have mentioned, female-oriented songs like "Brown Girl" and especially "Baby Please" fall flat. The latter also isn't helped by the speed-rapping, OR the sample of Al Green's "Love & Happiness" for the umpteenth time. And there's absolutely no excuse for "In the House"; well, unless this was 1983.

One song that everyone seems to like is "Red Hot", but the chorus to that song ruined it for me. Songs that DO impress include tracks 8 and 9: "Where We At" and "Get It Together". Another highlight is "End Up Like This". The song has the chorus: "How did we end up like this?" which is exactly what I'D like to know. Maybe the guys in J5 don't realize that it's best for the MTV generation to jump onto their bandwagon because they realize the music is good, not because the artist pathetically changes their style to fit the mold. Hopefully they'll realize that the next time around because right now if most people were to download a lot of these songs, they'd probably want to send the feed back.

3 out of 5 stars Don't mess with a good formula.......2006-11-11

The latest Jurassic 5 album is a departure from their previous works of pure hip-hop, and moving towards a fusion of pop and hip-hop. With collaborations with Dave Mathews Band, you can definitely tell that they're moving in a different direction. I think it will garner more commercial success, but what's made J5 great in the past was it's honesty towards the craft.

2 out of 5 stars No New Tricks.......2006-11-09

I am a huge a Jurassic 5 fan, in fact they are probably the single biggest influence of why I started to like hip hop. On this album nothing catches your attention. The use the same formula that they have used in the past, but the execution of the songs sometimes seems forced. A lot of that has to do with Cut Chemist not being there. Nu-Mark is a good producer, but when he steps aside to let others produce the music you can tell the difference. "Back 4 you" and "Red Hot" are really the only two good songs on the album. There are a couple of other decent tracks but nothing that is going to get stuck in your head. Also the song with Dave Matthews Band is AWFUL, but J5 wanted to try something new, and I think that is an interesting artistic decision, it just does not work very well between these two styles. This is by far the worst J5 album, if you want classic J5 pick up Quality Control, or their EP, each of these are defining hip hop.

I find the originality and execution of this EP to be unmatched in hip hop. And it is better than a classic underground EP, it is darn near classic in general due to the timeless Concrete Schoolyard and Action Satisfaction. Also, Lesson Six is a classic DJ track for people who are into that (I am among those). Find this used cheap and you will keep it (and play it) forever.

Hey Pete, Eminem is in no way a bling bling MC you dumbass. Don't be throwing that insult around when you dont even know your own stuff. Eminem and Jay Z are two all time greats, but J 5 is amazing and revolutionary. No disrespect to them, just you. Anyways, this is the beginning of an incredible group. If you've listened to this and not their other albums I advise you to check out "Quality Control" and "Power in Numbers," both astounding in their own right. And to Pete, I advise you to do your homework.

5 out of 5 stars this is only the beginning..........2005-02-03

This CD is hip-hop classic. I mean, this is a fresh EP that has tracks that rival and in some case better some of the best hip-hop out there, and it sh*ts all over any LPs commercial "hip-pop" has to offer.

J5 offer a refreshing new hip-hop perspective that contains both old and new school influences, tights flows over some of the strongest and most original beats and cuts you'll hear.

Being an EP it only has 13 tracks (8 originally plus the 5 bonus tracks), and only 6 are actual songs (although Cut Chemist's little skits are quite entertaining), but all of these are strong and show (just a taste) of what J5 have in stall for us in the future. "Concrete Schoolyard" is an instant classic, my other favourites being "Jayou" and "Action Satisfaction". I also don't mind the dubs, freestyle any one?

The only thing you'll be disappointed about buying this CD is that you'll be craving more tracks so pick up their LPs (Quality Control and Power in Numbers)if you're feeling it.

P.S. don't give this CD 3 stars just coz its short, its an EP, so rate it as one. (although it'd still be worth a least 4 if it WERE an LP...)

5 out of 5 stars Let's take it back.........2006-10-26

to the concrete streets //// Original beats, and real live MC's//// Playground tactics/ A rabbit in a hat tricks/ Just that classic rap S*** from Jurassic! CLASSIC JURASSIC!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty much an ungerground and general classic EP.......2006-02-24

5 out of 5 stars This is to pete.......2005-10-06

5 out of 5 stars what the hell??.......2004-07-23

what the hell u dumb asses on about? not enough songs on it?? thats why its an EP. EPS ARE NOT FULL LENGTH ALBUMS. ep's usually are put out when an album is in the making or is upcoming, and it used to pretty much advertise it. anyway, this like all jurassic 5 albums, kicks ass and beats any of them pop crap mainstream artists out there like eminem jayz ja rule dmx etc bling bling crap.

2 out of 5 stars With that many songs to choose from, should be better.......2003-05-13

This should have been one of the best albums of the year, but the song selection was rather poor. I was quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Show on Earth........2003-04-01

I thought after attending Bonnaroo that there would be no way to document this occasion without a huge CD set. However, they performed a miracle and this 2 CD set is great. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars very good but not great.......2003-01-02

this is one of those concert festival cds that would have been so much better live... some of the tracks live Les Claypool and Robert Randolph really rocked on but other like Bela Fleck and most of disc 2 could have been way better. the one really good thing this cd did is make me aware of the Bonnaroo Festival and who could be playing at it this year! you would be better of finding bootlegs of the show.

4 out of 5 stars -Sample some of the sweetest music around.......2002-11-18

What do you need to know about this compilation? I really shouldn't presume that I know. However, I can tell you what I enjoyed, and why I enjoyed it.
Widespread Panic with Dottie Peoples and the People's Choice Choir-Unbelievable energy,is this gospel music? Is it Southern Rock? Does it matter? Not really, it is simply music that is passionate, vibrant, and great for the soul. This may seem overly enthusiastic, or even maudlin, but I recommend that you listen to the song, and hear the magic for yourself.
Phil and Bobby:Tennessee Jed-apropos right? Fitting for the occasion, and it is obvious that the crowd appreciated the song. What is more, the band is great, and they have such a following for good reason.
Les Claypool's Frog Brigade:Lomotive Breath- The Frogs do Jethro Tull proud; a great cover, a sweet tip-o'-the-hat.
Robert Randolph & the Family Band with Luther Dickinson-Very impressive, such skill, such soul. If you have never seen this band, it is definitely worth your while, what an experience they offer to those fortunate enough to attend their shows.
Soulive-Talent, ability, skill, yes describe it as you will, they do what they do, and they do it well. So funky, so fresh, yet so reminiscent of the musical past. The music combines elements of Jazz past, present and future.
The John Butler Trio-Perhaps not many people know of this band, as they are from Australia, but you just might appreciate this band's blues, jazz, and rock mixture. Sweet slide guitar.
If your curiosity has been peeked in the slightest, get this album, it is musically diverse, and samples some really great music. Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Bluegrass, Rock, Gospel, classify as you will, but in the end you will be satisfied.

3 out of 5 stars An Ample Compilation..........2002-11-08

Who ever edited this CD set should get a pat on the back. they did a great job, it must have been horrible to have to hack down the hundreds of awesome songs performed by a number of down right rockin' bands. I would like to have seen some of the Disco Biscuit's on this album but more importantly I would loved to have seen some of Colonel Les Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains! That is possibly the coolest live show that I have ever heard! For those of you that share this mutual disapointment should check out the DVD, it contains one song from the Bernie Brains set. This CD contains a lot of the solid performances that were given at the Festival but falls short of the legacy that the Bonnaroo Music Festival left in its wake. There are some blistering performances like the Frog Brigade track but overall it just falls short. If you were at the Festival don't bother with this CD get the DVD, unless you are a completionist. For the rest of you to get a good feeling for the type of music exebitioned at the Festival check it out, they should release an eight or nine CD set including some full sets but oh well!

(of the early-'90s underground group, Double XX Posse) and Big Daddy Kane help wreck the G Rap-esque "A Day at the Races," and the always game alterna-diva, Nelly Furtado, lends a surprisingly effective pop edge to the bouncy "Thin Line." On the production end of things, Juju of the Beatnuts adds his special blend of Colombian madness to the jazzy "If You Only Knew" and the considerably bleaker "One of Them." --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars Throw-back feel with a new-school approach.......2003-09-01

Jurassic 5 is one of a number of hip-hop groups out right now attempting to rekindle the vibe of the early 90's, and they are probally doing it best. If you are looking for "lyrically lyrical lyrics," this may not be for you; however, all 5 emcees come of with great flows that fit perfectly into what they are trying to do. And you know Cut Chemist and DJ Numark are providing the heat when it comes to beats. This ish is so good, you won't even mind the Nelly Furtado appearance.

4 out of 5 stars Oh how I LOVE this album.......2003-08-27

I'll admit that, after an intense love affair with hip-hop during my teen years, we fell out over the soulless gangsta and pop rap that's permeated the charts for the last decade. Of late, however, three groups have helped me rediscover why I fell in love with this music: The Roots, Outkast and Jurassic 5. This is the first album I bought by J5, and I simply adore it. At times playful (If You Only Knew), at other times deadly serious (A Day at the Races, Remember His Name), and often outright catchy (What's Golden, Thin Line), this album appeals to hip-hop heads of all shapes, sizes and tastes. The overall feel is communal and energetic: the listener can sing along, dance, or contemplate via headphones. J5 want you engaged, and over these 17 tracks, the six-man crew make it happen with tight wordplay, quicksilver flow, judicious samples and heady production, giving lapsed listeners like me a reason to love hip-hop again.

Key Tracks: "Freedom", "A Day at the Races", "Remember His Name", "What's Golden", "Thin Line", "High Fidelity", "One of Them"

This version also contains a DVD featuring J5 behind the scenes.

4 out of 5 stars HEY! This album's golden........2003-04-17

Yes you get a dvd and I say so frikkin what to that. Just make sure that the quality of the dvd is good and the fans won't complain one bit and also the fact that the album has to be a good one. Surprisingly the free DVD might throw you off to not buying it since your probably thinking it some gimmick but Jurassic 5 are a talented bunch of young lads. The beats Cut Chemist creates are beautiful and some are totally out of this world. The dvd is okay since it showcases some of the members going through daily life in the town where they live and recorded this album! Overall a very good buy for serious music collectors of the hip hop genre. This is a good one but I recommend Quality Control , which is the groups debut LP and is just as good, if not, even better than this one but this album is still good and worth the buy

4 out of 5 stars its Aight.......2003-04-02

this cd is alright. its good but not spectacular. i personally expected more outta them. good songs are "if i only knew", "whats golden", "a day at the races", "thin line feat. nelly furtado" and "remember his name"

4 out of 5 stars Dope Old-Schoolers.......2003-03-31

Jurassic 5 don't have exceptional talent. They aren't very original. Listening to their CDs isn't exactly a thought-provoking experience. But they do provide you with a refreshing change of pace and a break from all the industry problems and politics involved in gangsta rap. They just kick rhymes and play with beats and don't pretend to do anything else. This CD is a good listen.

For those who aren't familiar with J5, they consist of four MCs (Akil, Chali 2na, Zaakir, Marc 7) and two DJs (Nu-Mark, Cut Chemist). The MCs are all pretty talented. Their voices, both in unison and apart, work almost like instruments to change the sound of the rapping. It has a nice effect. I have to say Chali 2na outshines all the rest, with his deep voice and fantastic flow (check Sum of Us), but all the rest are good, too. Sometimes Akil and Zaakir are hard to tell apart, but both have skills. Marc 7 has a more breathy voice, and I've heard he's releasing a solo record.

Lyrically, this album has good content and variety. Some songs have political messages, such as Freedom, I Am Somebody, and Sum of Us, which has the best flows on the album. Some songs are just kicking old-school rhymes. This includes Break, High Fidelity, After School Special, and Day At the Races, feat. Big Daddy Kane and Percy P. What We Do is telling you J5's goal, which is basically just to make good music from way back when. Thin Line explores the line between friendship and love, and Remember His Name is a good story about a brother who made some bad choices and suffered bad consequences. What's Golden is kind of just kicking rhymes, but mixes it with some gangsta rap disses. Hey is good to just chill to. One of Them gets special mention because it's a rather unexpected diss to all the gangsta rappers who just go on camera and act tough. It makes some good points, but I don't like it that much. The tone is a little too angry, which doesn't suit J5. When they cuss and try to sound angry, they come off as a little corny. Also, the verses are more just split up into a series of one-liners. Dark beat. The remaining tracks are just DJ tracks, with one OK freestyle. There are no wack tracks on here. It's enjoyable throughout the CD.

The production is split between Nu-Mark, Cut Chemist, and a couple of guest stars. Personally, I prefer Nu-Mark. He has more variety. He just thinks up a cool melody that suits the tone of the song and puts it on there, without too much sampling. He gets most of the tracks in the middle; the best tracks in my opinion. Cut Chemist gets some tracks at the beginning and end, but I get the feeling he just likes the mess around with beats. He isn't consistent. He likes to change the beat around in the middle of the song, and does some weird sampling. I can't really get into it the way it changes, becaues as soon as I adjust to a beat it switches, so it never really feels complete. He only produces four or five real songs. The others are just DJ tracks. He just likes to play around, especially with drums. Juju of the Beatnuts produces One of Them and What We Do. What We Do is a soulful and jazzy flute/piano beat, and possibly the best on the album. One of Them is OK, a little dark. I forget who the other guest producer is, but he does Hey. He captures the dreamy "just chill" feel that makes the song great. The last track is a DJ duet between Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist. It's fun to listen to sometimes, but I prefer lyrics. All good beats that compliment the rappers perfectly.

I don't know what else to say. These are the dope old-schoolers. This is what I listen to if I'm in a good mood just to nod my head to. Good old-fashioned rhyming. Somehow, you can just tell all the MCs are nice guys who can rhyme. The DVD tells you more about their personalities and it helps you tell them all apart, which confused me at first. This isn't very serious or hardcore music, nor does it pretend to be, but if you want happy, light-hearted rhymes and beats, this is for you.

Closing Comments: Watch Chali 2na rap on the DVD, if you get it. He looks funny.

5 out of 5 stars the best music ever.......2004-02-19

My daughter ( at age 17) bought this CD and played it at home. I instantly fell in love with the music. It is the most incredible music I have ever listened to. I put it on my computer so that every time I am on
-line I can listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest hits of classical music.......2001-08-13

The use of the words "from the Movies" in the title of this compilation is misleading. While there are a handful of titles that were great originals from movies (the Star Wars theme, for example), the majority of the music is simply great classical music that happened to show up in a movie. This technicality aside, the music was amazing. The clarinet concerto and the Puccini opera from "Witches of Eastwick" are two of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of classic music from great movies.......2001-08-03

I belong to that camp of people who think that if Mozart was alive today he would be writing scores for theatrical films. The best thing about "Music From the Movies" is that it combines the use of classical music in movies, such as Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" in "Apocalypse Now" and Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" in "A Room With a View" with John Williams' "Main Title" from "Jurassic Park" and the "John Dunbar Theme" from John Barry's score for "Dances With Wolves." Unfortunately of the 33 tracks on this 2-disc set, only the last half-dozen or so are by contemporary composers. So the chief charm of this collection remains that it allows you to identify the classic music used in movies such as "Platoon," "A Clockwork Orange," "Wall Street," and "Kolya." Placido Domingo and Herbert Von Karajan are representative of the singers and conductors included in this collection, which is truly one of the better sets featuring classical music in the movies.

5 out of 5 stars This is nourishment for the soul!.......2001-06-04

I ordered this CD to get one piece of music only. What I received in reality was a compilation of masterpieces to refresh and enliven my very soul. The operatic selections are well known pieces performed by 'the great ones' (i.e Placido Domingo). Here you get the best of opera without having to endure what the uneducated would consider tendious. Additionally, I was surprised to discover how many movies themes were excerpts from the classics. This CD includes the name and movement of each selection, as well as the performer. It is a wonderful appetizer before investing in a full meal. I didn't begin with this intention, but now I want to hear complete pieces; anticipating a new excitment for many of the composers.

The stage of Tennessee jam band festival Bonnaroo is an unlikely setting for the year's most important blues recording, but young firebrands North Mississippi Allstars pulled off a creative coup this June with their Hill Country Revue. The concert teamed patriarch R.L. Burnside and his guitarist and rapper sons, the late Othar Turner's fife and drum band, the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson, and eccentric producer-pianist Jim Dickinson, the father of Allstars Luther and Cody Dickinson, with the wiry trio. The historic results handily blend all the racial, geographic, and cultural elements of the genre with adventurous musicality. Burnside, sadly, is past his prime--present more for inspiration than his lackluster contributions. But his sons carry on the tradition while pushing its borders into hip-hop and six-string psychedelia. If there's a star here, though, it's guitarist Luther Dickinson, who playfully quotes Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and the elder Burnside, and then adds a level of tonal and textural exploration to his performance that makes him a one-man defibrillator for the genre--human insurance that the heart of the blues will keep pumping into the future. --Ted Drozdowski

4 out of 5 stars Capturing the Bonnaroo Spirit.......2003-06-21

I was very blessed to be able to attend this amazing music festival. Overall, I was very pleased with this CD, and listening to it reminds me of those wonderful three days I spent in Manchester, TN. I was especially happy that Widespread Panic's "Tallboy" featuring Dottie People was on the CD, because that was truly a great musical moment. Overall, I thought most of the song selections were good, but there were some bands that I wished would have made the CD, for example The Big Wu, Keller Williams, Mofro and Donna the Buffalo. However, all in all, the CD did a fine job, and I especially enjoy the Widespread Panic, Robert Randolph, and String Cheese Incident song selections. Overall, I would recommend this CD for those who attended to festival and for those who did not manage to make it to Tennessee.

4 out of 5 stars Very good chance for someone who couldn't go to get a taste.......2003-04-01

I think this is a great compilation for someone like myself to get a taste of what Bonnaroo is like. This double disc is a great set of bands that I know I like and of bands that I've never heard before but definitely fit in and belong in a festival like Bonnaroo.

I must say that I am very disappointed in the song choice for Les Claypool's Frog Brigade. I am a huge Claypool fan as well as being a huge Tull fan. However, I would much rather hear Claypool playing his own stuff, and I'm sure he provided a vast set of songs that could have been put on this disc instead of Locamotive Breath.

I am only slightly disappointed in the choice for the Galactic song. I have seen them live, and they seriously jam. The song that was chosen for this double disc doesn't really jam. It's still a good song, but I don't think it represents their true style.

To end, I am very glad that I purchased this double disc. It is very well done, and the compilation of music on here makes me even more upset with myself that I didn't make it to Tennessee myself. I definitely recommend picking this one up.

As a potential solution to the limitations that I have read about this disc is that the song chosen isn't what people wanted for a particular band. If a 4-disc set was released with a few songs from each band, I would buy that.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff, even if you are not a "Dead" fan..........2003-03-26

This is an excellent sampler of music that is blissfully free of corporate branding and meant to be heard LIVE. I must say that I come to this scene via the funk and jazz route, so unlike all the people who dig this because of it's "Dead" and "Phish" connections, I bought it becasue I figured anything with Galactic, Soulive, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Norah Jones must be worth investigating. I'm pleased to say that I am now much more interested in Widespread Panic and Ben Harper than I ever was before. And it confirms that Robert Randolph is the next big thing.

The most interesting thing to me is that the free download Amazon lists as being from this CD, Galactic's "Hangnail", is not in fact on the CD, but it is EXCELLENT, and actually better than their contribution to this CD, "Tiger Roll". Fans of this band should download this immediately, it is awesome!

Good job by the producers of this CD to mix up the funk with the roots and southern sounds. (Could have used a Karl Denson song, though. I saw he was on the DVD.) Hopefully the 2003 version will have the funky METERS and Medeski, Martin and Wood! But buy this one to get a hold of a whole scene, and the beauty of music not made for consumer groups.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny!.......2003-02-18

This CD is one of those rare CDs you can listen to in its entirety. It has an eclectic enough mix of artists to keep the serious jam band fan engaged and some incredible performances that will hook someone just entering the genre. It's one thing to put together a compilation of great acts and another to create a compilation of great performances from great bands. This album was recommended to me by a jam band fanatic and I would recommend it to a serious jam bander to expand their collection, to a fledgling jam band fan as a springboard into the scene and to anyone in between. Buy this album.

3 out of 5 stars not what it's all about.......2003-01-06

while yes, this cd does have a good array of decent music, i think the cd itself flies in the face of the jamband scene. i don't understand how one can decide what should go on the cd and what shouldn't. i've never been a fan of "best of" cd's, and this is a perfect example. who's the guy that says norah jones should be chosen over disco biscuits?
also, i had the awful feeling after i bought this disc that i'm supporting a profit-based organization rather than one that truly appreciates the music these artists produce. sure, the cd serves as a vector to open people's eyes to a different genre of music, but it's closing the gap between a jam band and a pop band. plus, 22 bucks?
