Fantastic!.......2007-01-09
As a movie soundtrack fan, I was immediately drawn to 'The Greatest Game Ever Played,' and when I got it just a few weeks ago, I wasn't dissapointed.
At first it sounds much like James Horner's 'Legends of the Fall,' but it is by no means a repeat of it. It is a beautifull soundtrack on it's own, with many different themes that keep it exciting. The music has the same early 1900's feel as the movie while stil maintaining a variety of music styles; from soaring strings to intense violin pieces to period vocals like "And the Band Played On." Like the movie, it has a very inspirational feel, and I would definately recommend it to anyone, whether fans of the movie or soundtrack lovers.
Loved the movie, love the score.......2006-03-17
I saw The Greatest Game Ever Played in the theater and became enchanted with this film, based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, a low-class amateur golfer who emerges from complete obscurity to win the U.S. Open. By the end of the movie, I realized how much I was enjoying the music and decided that I just had to buy the soundtrack.
As I have listened to this soundtrack again and again, I've been captivated by this music. The beauty and power of Brian Tyler's composition is most impressive. As an intent listener, I've been deeply moved by the expansive musical landscape that is covered in this soundtrack. The central motif, a majestic and magnanimous melody which forms the essence of the main title, is woven into tracks throughout the disc, tying everything together as part of a musical (and theatrical) storyline. Indeed, it seems like an incomplete experience if I don't listen to the entire soundtrack, start to finish, in sequential order. If you take the time to do that, you'll find it's a very rewarding listen.
4.5 Stars for The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2006-03-11
This was an excellent 10 dollar purchase from iTunes, to put it mildly. As much as I loved Tyler's The Final Cut, Darkness Falls, Timeline and Constantine scores, this tops them all. It's a loving tribute to the main character of the film and good ol' fashioned film scoring in general. I haven't seen the movie and therefore cannot comment on wether or not it works in the context of the film. I can, however, say with great pleasure what a joy it is to listen to as a solo album.
The album picks up with the main title track, and what a great track it is. Some people will say it is Horner reminiscent, and while many themes on this CD do remind me of James Horner's best work, I actually think the closer resemblance is John Debney. I'm serious - this score is in many ways similar to The Passion of the Christ. It has pounding drums and wonderful percussion and isn't afraid to go all out with the string and brass section. It's a thrilling, heroic, melodramatic and operatic score that I've enjoyed listening to repeatedly. A highly recommended score for anyone who enjoys breathtaking and moving and powerful and heroic sometimes lighthearted and always thrilling music.
cheers
KZ
One of Brian Tyler's best.......2005-10-01
Brain Tyler says of this score that "the orchestral music was influenced by the popular music of the end of the 19th Century and the start of the 20th Century - Debussy, Sibelius, Strauss, and Mahler. To me, the sound we know as 'American' was a combination of the styles of so many of these great European composers." As far as I'm concerned, this score was a lot more influenced by James Horner -- certain bits sound strikingly similar to Legends of the Fall. But don't let that put you off, because the rest of the bits don't. This score is beautiful, lively, energetic, exciting and ebullient Americana throughout -- an odd contrast to Tyler's last score, the dark beast that was Constantine. Despite the occasional "nods" to Horner, though, Greatest Game Ever Played is one of Tyler's best and most thoroughly enjoyable scores, well orchestrated and well recorded also. If it's not quite Children of Dune, it's certainly better than his best since, such as Timeline and The Final Cut, on par with his other score for Bill Paxton, Frailty, though obviously in a very different genre and with a very different sound. So if you're a fan of Brian Tyler or good, uplifting, exciting film music in general, definitely check out this score.

Thought-provoking lyricism over incredible production.......2007-06-01
You might recognize Mad CJ Mac's name from a few high profile guest appearances he made during the 90s on some other west coast artists' albums. His 1995 debut, "True Game," was released on Rap-A-Lot Records, making him one of the Houston label's few west coast artists during their mid-90s heyday. Mad CJ Mac is an immensely talented individual, both on the mic and on the mixing boards. As a producer, he has a great formula, his sounds are polished, funky, and consistent. He tends to use the same instrumentation on each track, usually consisting of a high, whiny synth, rolling bass, a hard beat, and often a choppy sax or horn. His sound is strictly g-funk, but it's not quite as laidback as Warren G or Dr. Dre's early beats, they have a harder feel. Although the beats are really great throughout the whole album, a few sound very similar, and they're actually a little too consistent. On the mic you'll find CJ Mac to be an enticing MC. He has a nice delivery, deep and commanding. He has a lot of radical ideas and speaks with experience about life on the streets and drug trade. I enjoy him most when he challenges the legal system and talks about incarceration, but he's also really good when he talks about the hood and the lifestyle. What's a little disappointing is a few tracks where he falls into clichéd and average gangsta rap subject matter. I get the feeling that he's too good of a rapper to ever have to rap like that. "True Game" has a few flaws, but there are a handful of absolutely classic tracks that make this album totally worth the pickup, and the beats on this album make it worth it alone. Musically and lyrically, this album is really a gem and it's a severely underappreciated west coast album.
Following a totally dope intro, the album begins with the lyrical gem "Let My N...s Out the Pen." On this song, CJ is truly powerful. He criticizes the American prison system and injustice in the legal system. He addresses government conspiracies that really make you think. On one verse, he states that the only reason there's a "war on drugs" is because the government doesn't profit from drug money because it's untaxed. At the end, he slams California's three-strikes law as "unjust, prejudiced bulls...t," after complaining about the unfairness in sentencing. He really makes you think and makes great arguments for his cases on this song, he's radical yet convincing, and I think that's a sign of a great rapper. On the title track, CJ speaks of his experience and wisdom of the streets over a fast and synthed-out beat, it's not the best song on the disc but I definitely like it. The next song is an absolute classic, "Come and Take a Ride," a collaboration with fellow South Central rapper and labelmate Poppa LQ. The beat is absolutely perfect, a laidback, vibesy g-funker with an awesome synth-line. It's got an awesome chilled-out vibe but maintains a raw feel to it, both rappers' deliveries sound great and this song is just awesome. "Realism" and "Powda Puff" are two solid tracks, lyrically they're not standouts but the awesome production makes these songs keepers, especially the later, a rough diss track with a bumping, sax and string-laced beat. My favorite song on the album is "Losin' My Mind," a really engaging song both musically and lyrically. The beat is gorgeous, a bouncy, woozy track with sax and great electronic instrumentation and a pounding synth line on the hook. CJ speaks of urban paranoia a la "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me," his raps are insightful and emotional. At this point, the album sort of loses it's focus, and although the beats remain tight, lyrically it does not quite remain as excellent as the first half. "N...s Can't See Thee Ahh!" is another nice woozy track, he represents his hometown and coast. It's not a real highlight but again a very solid track, showing his consistency as a producer and rapper. "Tryina Survive" is a pretty average song about struggles in the dangerous ghetto, and "Trust No" is kind of forgettable. "Dead Man Walkin" is a return to form, a heartfelt and musically excellent song. The album closes with the pretty good "I Can't Stand a Rat."
Rap-A-Lot couldn't exert the same pull on the west coast as they could in the south, so this album went under the radar despite its quality during the nineties and remains really slept-on to this day. I highly recommend this one to fans of west coast rap, his lyrics will appeal to 2Pac fans and anybody with ears could enjoy his awesome production. While he would go on to release one more album, 1999's Platinum Game, this was the crown jewel of his career, but with the flood of California g-funk in '95, it was swept under the rug with other gems like Jayo Felony's Take a Ride, Twinz' Conversation, and B.G. Knocc Out & Dresta's Real Brothas. 1995 was a great year for hip hop, especially on the west coast, and this reflects the great state of rap at the time. There are points on this album where you'll find yourself thinking it doesn't get much better than this, and it's true, there is some incredible hip hop on "True Game." If you get the chance to pick this up, I highly recommend a purchase, this music is thought-provoking and musically excellent.
One of the most hidden treasures in west coast rap.......2005-06-11
Mad CJ Mac True Game was the best album few heard about. What makes this cd so enticing is not only good production (classic g funk circa 1994-1995) but Mad CJ is one of the most intelligent mc's I have ever heard. He feels strongly about the incarceration of many black males, and how the system is seemingly set up as a viscious cycle more than a mechanism for rehabilitation. His argument is well structured and compelling. This album about awareness to this and many other issues. The thought critique is very in depth, and gives us accounts of abhorrent instances of institutional racism. "Come and Take a Ride" is the feel good song, which is classic g funk. This album is a twist of g-funk and innovative progressive thought. Being that this album came out in the "renaissance" of rap (94-95)and it still ranks in my top 10 of all time says a lot. I give it five stars, and a must for any hip hop fan.
5 Star Hit and Underrated.......2005-05-23
Mad Cj Mac (now just CJ Mac) spits nothing but fire in his debut album "True Game." "True Game" has angry, hard-core rhymes set over an interesting array of G-Funk beats, ranging from laid back as in "Come and Take a Ride," to jazzy as in "Powda Puff," to bass heavy and menacing as in "I Can't Stand a Rat." Of course, it may be gangsta rap, a genre hardly new in 1995, but CJ Mac throws in his own especially angry persona, which makes the album awesome. The use of the whistly, whiny keyboard synths in about half of the songs adds an even more gangsta feel to the cd! Of course, this album is one of many great non-mainstream albums slept on! Despite being from South Central LA CJ had to holla at Lil' J in H-Town to get this record, and aside from the West Coast mentality here, there is a certain third coast influence on many of the beats like the hella sick "Dead Man Walkin'" and the seriously political "Let My N----s Out Tha Pen" and even the classic track "Come And Take A Ride." All in all, the neat mix of Texas and West Coast beats and CJ's firey flows will satisfy any real hip hop head. Another Rap-A-Lot classic!!
C.J. Mac - True Game.......2005-03-02
After hearing C.J. diss Dr. Dre and Aftermath on Death Row's "Too Gangsta For Radio", I decided to check out his earlier solo work. His first album titled, "True Game" was released in 1995.

13. I Can't Stand a Rat - Great beat, C.J. comes nice, hook is alright - 3.5/5
Overall: 45.5 /55
4 Stars
C.J. put out a good debut album to get into the rap game. The main thing that this album lacks is the hooks, most of the really suck or are borderline average. If they would have been more creative and hard, this album would have been so much better. But don't get me wrong, this album is still good!
Good debut.......2004-11-05
CJ Mac delivers a quality cd for his debut. He was already 30 when it came out but it has some tight west coast beats and he tells his stories well. He gets on the young players in the game saying he been bangin since '79 and used to get birds for $4300. It has a few classics and doesn't feature many people (one song w/ Poppa LQ & 2 chorus sung by some woman). No real weak spots. Neveretheless it is a good CD and a must have for gangsta rap west coast fans.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

One of the tracks is dope!.......2002-12-27
I heard it on a mix tape in 1997, and I've been trying to find it on the internet ever since. It's called "I'm the Man (Your Mama's Been Warnin' You About)" and it's the shizzle. If anyone can post it anywhere on the net, I'd be much obliged.

Not bad for a Video Game Soundtrack.......2006-02-21
Being a Playstation 2 owner, its a pleasure to be able to have a game "and" have a killer soundtrack to go with it. True Crime has an all around cast of rappers making with some very good rhymes and the beats are excellent! Snoop Dogg gets things started and Warren-G has by far, one of the hottest cuts on this CD! There are about 20 tracks on this CD and at least 15 of them were hard hitting tracks. Now thats quality!!!!! The CD lives up to the hype of the actual game itself.
Crap.......2005-01-16
I think True Crime is an excellent action game. However, I feel the soundtrack is extremely lackluster. Most of the songs sound the same, and aren't really that interesting. Even worse, my favorite songs from the game(such as the one that plays during the spa shootout or the music from the battle with Kim) aren't even on the CD. Personally, I think only extremely hardcore fans of the game should check it out, the rest should stay away.
Could Have been better.......2004-11-15
With all of the rap songs that are onthe video game they could have put together something much better. It has it's highpoints but after about the 10th track, there is nothing really worth listening to and I usually turn it off. All of the big named rappers and good songs are in the beginning of the CD (except 1)then they get some no names that make junk. Not recommended - download the 7 or 8 that are worth it and skip the rest.
#1 - 8 (snoop)
#2 - 9 (WC, Ice Cube, Mack 10 {Westside Connection} - also on thier "Terrorist Threats" cd)
#3 - 7 (suga Free)
#4 - 7.5 (Warren G f/ RBX)
#5 - 7.5 (Bishop Lamont, Young Dre, Black, Gangsta ...)
#6 - 9 (Damizza & NUNE - upbeat track)
#7 - 8 (Jayo Felony)
#8 - 9 (Bizzy Bone - maybe the best song on the album)
#9 - 2 (hlooywood)
#10 - 8 (Caviar, Above the Law {KMG & Cold 187 um} & Kam)
#11 - 6 (Boo Yaa tribe)
#12 - 6 (dee dimes)
#13 - 6.5 (sly boogy)
#14 - 5 (lil half dead, quicktomac, kontroversy, showtime)
#15 - 4 (soulstar)
#16 - 7 (tray deee, threat, mr. short khop)
#17 - 6.5 (pomona city ridaz)
#18 - 3 (horrible song by Young billionaires)
#19 - 6 (Styliztik)
#20 - 6 (lil Eazy E)

Asaph's great.......2006-03-05
This cd is one of the greatest soul cd's ever. It's a shame the record label "GA soul" could'nt take him to the next level of where he needed to be.
We dont need to loose any more real talent like Asaph.
Very Impressive.......2004-05-26

Asaph Womack Highly Recommended.......2004-03-12
I purchased Asaph Womack's cd as soon as my friends told me about it. All of my girl friend's have been raving about Asaph Womack's voice every since his visit here in the Sanfransisco bay area.
When I was a little girl I was big fan of Bobby Womack but now I'm a huge fan of Asaph Womack and I am so thrilled about his cd. I strongly believe that we will hear many great things about Asaph in the near future. This man's voice and music are incredible. I LOVE this cd and I highly recommend it! This cd is soOOO soothing and soOOO sexy that I am compelled to play it each and everyday! Just imagine Bobby Womack, Sam Cooke, Prince, Maxwell, Stevie an D'angelo wrapped up in one, and still this guy some how manages to have his own uniqueness.
You just have to hear it for yourself.
