Amazon.com essential recording
This is one of the finest Purcell discs around, but it isn't one of the most cheerful. It's an anthology of pieces for one to four voices with continuo on spiritual themes--pieces such as "With sick and famish'd eyes," "The earth trembled," "In the black, dismal dungeon of despair," and the famous "O solitude." It really is top-notch Purcell, with much better texts than he usually had to work with, and it's performed to Paul McCreesh's usual high standard, but Baroque-for-Brunch it is not. The highlights are the deeply comforting meditation "Close thine eyes and sleep secure," and the riveting "In guilty night," effectively an eight-minute chamber opera enacting Saul's visit to the Witch of Endor, with a sensational performance by Charles Daniels as Saul. --Matthew Westphal

In his introduction, Bob Costas intones "music and baseball, it's a perfect fit." As evidence, this well-intentioned CD (proceeds going to the Players Trust for Children) is served up, a collection of 13 songs, featuring a host of baseball stars. Heck, if Garth Brooks can try out for the Padres, why can't these guys take a swing at rock, country, and Latin? And though originality is not the name of the game here, neither is embarrassment. There's some good music on this disc. Standouts include "Black" Jack McDowell's "Silence," which actually does rock, in a gun-slinging, Ted Nugent vein; David Wells's "OB Trolls," an irreverent surf-punk look at beach bums; and, particularly, Jose Lima's "La Gozadera," its snappy rhythms and punchy horns giving it hit potential in the current Latin craze.
The batting average isn't .1000, however. Mark Langston's acoustic guitar is buried under a Styx-like barrage on "Welcome to the Show"; Ernie Banks, though listed, is nowhere to be found on a lounge-like "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"; and Bernie Williams's tepid guitar plunkings on "Eye of the Storm" make "warm jazz" sound like hardball.
Garth Brooks didn't make the big leagues, and these guys aren't going to be chart busters. But, it doesn't really matter-they have a great day job. --Wally Shoup
Customer Reviews:
Sweet Swings--But No Homers.......2000-11-08
What this album of pop songs performed by current and former ballplayers lacks in musicality it more than makes up for in curiosity value. And besides raising money for a good cause -- the Major League Baseball Players Trust for Children -- it proves that these jocks can play music better than Mets [hopeful] Garth Brooks can play ball.
Among the most musical of the 12 athletes are Astros pitcher Jose Lima, who wrote, produced and sang "La Gozadera," and Yankee Bernie Williams, who plays a subtly jazzy guitar on the instrumental "Eye of the Storm." Arizona outfielder Luis Gonzalez plays congas on the R&B-flavored "Take a Swing," and Yankee Paul O'Neill bangs the fences with his drumming on the Springsteen-esque "Just Like Baseball." There are whiffs: Pitcher Jack McDowell sounds wan on "Silence," and Hall of Famer Ernie Banks can hardly be heard on "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."
A fun, unique CD to have and share.
Weird.......2000-04-30
I'll resist the temptation to choose the introductory voiceover from sports announcer Bob Costas, "Music and baseball: A perfect combination." Major league baseball players did this to benefit MLB's Trust Fund for Children, so I'll try not to sound snide or heartless. But rock songs about baseball make me wince faster than a Randy Johnson brushback. Yankee leftfielder Paul O'Neil drumming on a Kenny Rogers-style romp is something worth smashing a water cooler over. To their credit, most of the ballplayers who dare sing do it about as well as the scores of other singers in this world who try, unsuccessfully. But where's the John Rocker version of "New York, New York" I'd like to know?
