The mother of them all. Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force's "I Wonder If I Take You Home" is often cited, along with Shannon's "Let the Music Play" and Jellybean's "The Mexican," as one of the first freestyle tracks to gain recognition. Ms. Lisa's winsome bleat is the perfect expression of the hard teenage realities she faces in the song, which is a more lyrically graphic update of the sturdy themes in "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" Meanwhile the melody (such that it is) and the beats goose the track into a giddy, cosmopolitan distillation of urban youth. The huge single "All Cried Out" follows up on "I Wonder If I Take You Home": she did take him home, and lived to regret it. Also contains the essential early freestyle smash, "Can You Feel the Beat." --John Sanchez

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop Soul Is Created.......2005-09-11

Historical landmark achievement. Full Force created a new genre of music, Hip Hop Soul. This blueprint was copied by countless artists including Miche'lle and Mary J Blige. Full Force needs to get the credit they deserve.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Freestyle.......2003-09-01

Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's debut is a freestyle classic. With each song a extension of the other, all leading to a complete finish. "I wonder if i take you home" is their well known classic. A listen to "Behind my eyes", "You'll never Change", and "Private Property" and you'll realize each of those cuts are just as good. The whole album is consistent. The ballad "All cried out" with FULL FORCE is essential. A song to note as well is the dance hit "Can you feel the beat?". FULL FORCE produced this effort and it is one anyone interested in 80's r&b and freestyle should have. A winner!

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam.......2003-08-19

This trios music along with Full Force takes me back to 1984. My early years in the Marine Corps. My friends and I were hitting the enlisted clubs (at) Camp Lejuene in North Carolina. They were the bomb then and I still (jump to) their music in the car today. I'm hoping that they get together and make a new album CD. I know that they can keep up with the groups of today. They were ahead of their time.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC DANCE NEW YORK STYLE!!!!!!.......2002-02-16

LISA LISA.......LISA LISA'S MUSIC TAKES ME BACK TO THE GLORY DAYS OF DANCE MUSIC,HER STRONG VOICE WITH THE GREAT DANCE CUTS MAKE A GREAT COMBINATION. I CAN STILL REMEMBER GOING TO THE DISCO BACK IN 1984 AND DANCING TO "CAN YOU FEEL THE BEAT", "TAKE ME HOME", AND OF COURSE MY FAVORITE "I WONDER IF YOU TAKE ME HOME", THIS SONG REALLY BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE BACK IN THE 80'S. TODAY WHEN I HEAR IT BRINGS BACK VERY FOND MEMORIES. BUY THIS CD AND KEEP IT IN THE ARCHIVES, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Landmark Freestyle Album.......2001-01-03

Before starring on the new Nickelodeon-network children's series, "Taina" (she plays the title character's mother), a young girl by the name of Lisa Velez was transforming the music scene inside out. Going by her stage name, Lisa Lisa, she teamed up with two other local musicians to form one of the 1980's most famous trios. Shattering the mold of pretty white kids singing pop, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam showed the world that three Latino kids growing up in one of New York City's tough neighborhoods, Hell's Kitchen, can make memorable dance music.

Partnered with the talented songwriting/singing group Full Force, Lisa Lisa, scored hit after hit with such songs as "All Cried Out" and "Lost in Emotion." On their debut album, they rocked the dance world with their very own brand of freestyle music.

Freestyle, a musical style popularized by young Puerto Ricans living in New York, would capture the world by storm in the upcoming years as many artists and groups such as Lissette Melendez, George Lamond, Expose, and Safire became well-known names on radios and music video shows throughout the United States.

On this debut album, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam hits us with three memorable songs: The hit "I Wonder If I Take You Home"; the love ballad "All Cried Out"; and the dance-hit "Can You Feel The Beat?". Their first hit, "I Wonder If I Take You Home" sealed their fame as one of the 1980's most memorable songs due to it's catchy beats and lyrics. "All Cried Out," a slow, yet soulful ballad was one of the first freestyle-love songs out there and it paved the way for more such songs (e.g., Brenda K. Starr's "I Still Believe"). "Can You Feel the Beat?" is a lengthy, fast-rhytmn song that made waves throughout all of the major clubs in New York and Miami. While the other songs are good, these three songs stand out as the top songs on this landmark album.

If you are an 80's-phile and need a dose of freestyle music in your musical diet, then add this album to your shopping cart. While no longer together, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam will forever be pioneers in the emergence of Latino artists in the English-language market.

John Darnielle would prefer to see the music of his band, the Mountain Goats, classified as bi-fi, as opposed to lo-fi. He cites the fact that without modern technology, recording an album from one's bedroom would never be so easy. Sounds like a bit of overanalysis, but that's pretty much the ideology behind Darnielle and whomever of his friends the group consists of at this moment. Lyrics brim with explanations, literary references, philosophical allusions, and an all-around endearing nerdiness. The music of the Mountain Goats tends to be filled with the rapid strums of an acoustic guitar ... and little else. Full Force Galesburg is nothing short of brilliant. Darnielle is backed by Kiwi soundscapist Alastair Galbraith and Nothing Painted Blue's Peter Hughes on memorable songs of codependence and breakup. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars One of the Goats' finest.......2006-06-19

most of john darnielle's recorded output falls somewhere between good and brilliant. personally, i'd have to cite either the coroner's gambit or tallahassee as my favorite, but this album is almost as consistently inspired as those two. most of the songs get by (actually, they do a lot more than just getting by) on nothing but frantically strummed acoustic guitars and literate but accessible wordplay, but there are also some very successful songs that employ higher-fidelity recording and additional instrumentation. all in all, full force galesburg is a cohesive, compelling album that offers greater rewards with each listen.

5 out of 5 stars this cd is awesome.......2002-05-27

the mountain goats are incredible, and this album is a clear demonstration of that. the songs managage to rock, even with such sparse instrumentation, such as West Country Dream which finds Darnielle doing what he does best, strumming furiously on his acoustic guitar.

    5 out of 5 stars Darnielle is a genius..........2002-04-18

When it comes to taking independent recordings to a limit, Darnielle manages to do so. Armed with just his acoustic guitar and a panasonic boombox, Darnielle's lyrical honesty and folk-driven guitar playing is immediately catchy and one that you have to listen to over and over again.

Even with such a basic combination (man and a guitar), Darnielle's voice and style of music is instantly recognizable. With his nasal voice and stark observations on life, he manages to show the beauty in every day things and an apperciation of nature.

To talk about this CD as a whole, it's one that you wouldn't normally pick up but when and if you did, it would be an instant classic to your collection. Full Force Galesburg is a CD that will constantly impress and demand repeated listenings.

5 out of 5 stars If the world were a better place.......2002-04-18

If the world were a better place, this, and music like this
(IS there anything like this) would be the soundtrack of life, would trickle from the speakers of restaurants and dribble over the cracks of car windows. And everytime someone discussed John Darnielle's music, or the music of Vic Chesnutt, or Camper Van Beethoven, or for that matter David Byrne, they wouldn't spend so much verbiage on how "weird" or "otherworldly" or "bizarre" the music is, as though it came to us via flying saucer. Intelligence and true artism would be and should be not treated as an oddity.

This record is as good as any of the Goats'--true, actual emotion, with legitimite conveyance of emotion. Darnielle knows how to use the quiet enunciation, the shout, all of his intonations matter, emotionally.
    In "Weekend in Southern Illinois"
he sings "The dandelions spread themselves neatly/
upon the fields/which are evendently endless"
The song refers to dogs which "seem to know something nobody else knows," which is apparently that "We are burning up/
all of our choices/out here where the tall grass grows." It's a great moment, a great meditation, easy to understand or not. Emotions are FELT not UNDERSTOOD. Forgive John Darnielle his nasal voice: he's a good guitar player and composes very well for the instrument, but it's the lyrics that win the day here. I can't say enough about this important, exquisite work.

    5 out of 5 stars top 5.......2001-07-15

The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle is the pinnacle of guy-and-a-guitar rock. This album is his crowning glory. One of the greatest records ever. Period.

4 out of 5 stars This Is The Collection You Need!.......2006-04-22

WARNING!! Don't buy that hot mess of a CD titled 'Still Standing' from 2001! This is the collection for you. MOST of Full Force's greatest hits are on this CD, and that includes super rare extended versions of 'Alice I Want You Just For Me' & 'Unselfish Lover', which take me back to the good times of 1985.

The ONLY drawback with this collection is the failure to include Force's big hit from 1987...'Love Is For Suckers (Like Me & You)', and I just had to add this track to my remastered CD. This song is on the 'Guess Who's Coming To The Crib' CD, which also features the classic slow jam 'All In My Mind'. Even though this collection is missing a key song, 'Full Force's Greatest Hits' is still a worthy collection for old & new fans alike. Don't sleep on this CD..who knows how long it will be in print!

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE FULL FORCE.......2002-07-13

What more can I say. I loved Full Force in the late 1980's, and I still love them today. Their music was funky, soulful, yet fresh and they were definitely ahead of their time!!

Standout sensational songs include "Unselfish Lover" (someone has GOT to do a cover of this song, "All in My Mind", and "Please Stay".

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the wait is over.....,.......2001-12-29

The original hip-hop vocal band has unleashed a complete greatest hits package. They teased us with a few shorter versions of their best of on "Still Standing", but they came with it on this one. All the classics are here, from "Alice, I Want You Just For Me, Ain't My Type of Hype, to Unselfish Lover"..., but the unforgettable slow jams "All in My Mind", "4U:Full Force Mellow Medley" and the ever so sensuous "Kiss Those Lips", are here as well, all of which were missing from the "Still Standing" cd. They end the cd on a spiritual note with the "Man Upstairs" which was slept on back in the day which shows their early roots in the church. Overall this cd is da' Bomb, and one of the most complete greatest hits package I have ever heard..., This is a must have...., for true Full Force Fans

3 out of 5 stars Start from track 4, then let 'er rip..........2007-03-08

The new material on this CD is not all that great with the exception of the slow version of "Float On." Now, that's the joint. But the rest is just mediocre. The old cuts bring back memories, "Ain't My Type Of Hype" from House Party (which is ridiculously left off the soundtrack). Who can forget the battle between Kid and Play and Sydney and Sharaine? Classic.

They did leave off "All In My Mind" and "Love Is For Suckers Like Me" but I guess they couldn't include them all. Track 14 could have been left off. It's just some guy cursing into the microphone about how fine Roxanne Shante was. The last track is a new recording of Cheryl Pepsii Riley's "Thanks For My Child" which she is definitely over-singing on. She turned it into a stage play performance and toward the end of the song, you really begin to tire of the unnecessary riffs. She is singing as if she's standing directly in front of Randy, Paula and Simon and in dire need of a recording contract. I can't understand why they just didn't include the original version. It is much better.

If you want a taste of the old and new Full Force this may be the CD for you. That slow version of "Float On" alone is worth purchasing this one. However, if you just want that straight up old school Full Force, you may want to go with their Greatest Hits CD.

2 out of 5 stars FULL FORCE was already tough, now they gangsta. WHY??????.......2004-10-10

Yeah, what a reunion album (not that F.F. ever broke up). It stinks. Mainly, the 1st 6 selections (which are the new songs) while they use real rappers to fill in what UTFO and ECROF used to do which makes the new songs even whacker.

Oh yeah,oh my God. If you can, find the clean version of this album. The profanity is ridicious (STAR and FUNKMASTER FLEX are the worst),never has FULL FORCE allowed so much cussin' on an album in the 80's (they saved that for their liner notes, seriously).

From 8 on,F.F. classics like "Alice,I Want You Just For Me","Temporary Love Thing","Ain't My Type Of Hype" and "Unselfish Lover" and classics written and produced for others like JAMES BROWN,CHERYL "PEPSII" RILEY,LISA LISA & CULT JAM,UTFO and 'N SYNC are the worthwhile listening tracks (even 'N SYNC,go figure).

If you want a good portion of the classics, buy AHEAD OF THEIR TIME,this is the new century and the new F.F. material 'ain't nothin' to F wit'. This gangsta trash "Ain't My Type Of Hype",dig?

3 out of 5 stars Full Force -.......2002-01-16

This album is worth it if you are a collector and want all of there albums ever made but I would wait on this one and buy the other greatest hits album put out on Thump Records. Much better........

    2 out of 5 stars Very Dissapointed.......2001-08-04

Being a fan of Full Force from back in the day, I was very dissapointed with the new album. Over half of the album is either hits they did themselfs or produced. Except for Float on With Us, there is no reason to buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars FULL FORCE IS BACK!!.......2001-08-03

In actuality they never left. Once the force has been felt, it lives on indefinitely. You must marvel at FF's ability to adjust to the times and roll with the tragedies they have experienced and continue to slap the industry for trying to keep them down, they are most definitely Still Standin'!. Not many knew they aided Britney's climb as well as N'Sync and The Backstreet Boys. I rated Still Standin' a 5 mainly because the brothers are back and they gave me some of the classics that I only have on wax and my turntable is broke and I couldn't reminisce, but now I can! Let's talk about the new: Both the Float On cuts are hittin'. Leave it to FF to bring such a broad range of talent together. When you have Meth on the ruff cut and Montell on the smoove one, you can't miss. The force has not lost its touch for producing the beautiful ballad and proper storytelling. Sadly, the spare sound of the big drum, melodious keys and thumping bass must be found on the classics. Now for the old: FF has too many productions to try to include only 9 previous hits on the CD. Each one that is on it should have been included, although that was the first time I heard the Backstreet Boys' cut. As a true FF fan I have to demand a true greatest productions CD to include: United, Dream Believer, Unfaithful, Your Love Is So Def, Love Is For Suckers, Low Blow Brenda, Black Radio, ALL IN MY MIND, Friends B4 Lovers, Physical Commitment, Sharon, If It's Cool Witcha, God Will Fix It, Sugar On Top, Can You Feel The Beat, You'll Never Change, Naughty Girls, Let's Go-Go, Little Jackie, the UTFO joints, and yes even LaToya's Wicked Love (remix). For you true FF fans, you'll be glad to hear that they have maintained their sense of humor in their songs and the guest interludes entertain. It was good to hear another top FLYTE production team, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, show their respect and appreciation for these brothers' skills. Needless to say, a CD with all of the remixes and extended versions is a must. Their ability to funk up their own funk has always amazed me. All in all this is a very good CD and a MUST for your Full Force collection.

    Album Description

Sister Machine Gun's seventh full-length album is a tour-de-force of electronic rock that recalls the industrial sound of the late eighties and early nineties. Heavy beats, distorted guitars and pounding synth lines drag your favorite sounds, kicking and screaming into the future!

    4 out of 5 stars Groovy.......2004-10-04

Sister Machine Gun has effectively carved out a cozy niche for itself and their latest release Influence does nothing but carry on the winning account. Some of the sound design seems a bit out of date but that scarcely deters from the fact that Chris Randall is one of the best songwriters in the Industrial Hard Rock genre. Randall's hooks and melodies are seldom matched in the field while his panache for powerful downbeats and dance grooves should never be over-looked either. Sister Machine Gun feeds the fire.

    5 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2004-04-29

i'll make this short.. Sister machine gun attempts to recreate that 90's industrial feel and for the most part they succeed. although there is a couple tracks that bore me.. for the most part this is as good as it gets aside from those original songs back in the day. highly reccomended if you're an industrial fan.

5 out of 5 stars Music that's food for your ears!.......2004-01-19

Sister Machine Gun has been one of those bands that never disappoint, whether you see them live, or pick up their cd.

This newest CD from the Chicago band has all the elements of their roots, and aims to please the listener, and I am more than pleased with the results.

I have watched this group expand their horizons to grab new fans and also to grab your attention the second the first song off this cd starts, "To Hell With You" all the way through to the last one, "The Antagonizer". It's all non-stop. I find it difficult to listen to this without getting my body into the groove, can you?

From singer and musician, Chris Randall's sensual voice , to Miguel Turanzas, wow, now THIS is SMG. This cd will definitely make you want more.

You're always welcomed at http://www.sistermachinegun.com. Don't be shy, stop by sometime.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this album.......2003-12-25

Do yourself a favor and pick up this CD. Sister Machine Gun goes back to it's roots on Influence and the results are a CD that sounds like Wax Trax era industrial updated for the new millennium.

5 out of 5 stars Old School Meets New.......2003-12-24

It's SMG's most danceable release since Transient 5.2 - it has everything I ever loved about electro-industrial, irradiated with enough creativity to keep it from ever getting stale. Chris Randall and Miguel Turanzas have done the seemingly impossible - they combined everything the band has ever been into one package. It has taken my CD player hostage, and I couldn't be happier.
