3 out of 5 stars Inhale The Smoked Out Rhymes (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars).......2007-05-04

I really haven't been paying attention to Devin The Dude much. The only times I've heard him was on Dr. Dre's "F You" and on Scarface's "Sex Faces" and "In And Out". Dude can drop some nice rhymes judging from those two songs. I finally had a chance to check out his latest album "Waiting To Inhale" (I also purchased "To Tha X-Treme" and "Just Tryin' To Live" as well).

Devin's music has a laid back atmosphere with his slow flow. As many realised, he's in to two things: weed and women. I'm not mad at that A lot of the songs on here are about those two topics, over some slow sounding beats, and it can be enteraining. "She Want That Money" is one of the entertaining tracks that on this album. "I Hope I Don't Get Sick-A-This" and "All Mighty Dollar" has some nice beats that goes with Devin's flow. "Lil' Girl Gone" with Lil Wayne and Bun B is a nice song about little females who end up in very bad situations.

Some tracks I wasn't feeling was "What A Job" even though I love Snoop Dogg and Andre 3000. "Just Because" is a funny but the song itself is so slow, I'm just not feeling it. "Don't Wanna Be Alone" is a long slow don't-leave-me-girl song that has Devin singing, and is hard to build a tollerance for.

Overall, I feel that Devin's fourth album is a very good album. I personally like "To Tha X-Treme" better than this album. I believe that his albums are poorly promoted and are the reason why he gets slept on. Heck, he doesn't even get play in his home state of Texas, or at least not in San Antonio (I used to live there). If he had better promotion, I would believe that at least one of his albums would go gold or maybe platnum. No doubt Devin's talents maybe the best kept secret from Houston (and the only good album to come from there this year), and I recommend that you check out this album, especially if you like to smoke weed. Peace!

If you never heard of him, then wake up. It's The Dude... What do you expect? Good laid back, mellow music? Search no further. He never disappoints.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, very entertaining.......2007-04-30

I read a review that said that it is impossible to not be turned into an instant fan after listening to a Devin The Dude album and that is so true.

I have never heard any of this Dude's albums even though I always found his guest appearances funny. I decided to take a chance on his latest and I haven't been disappointed at all.

Lyrically Devin is the funniest thing I've ever heard. Its crazy how he can be funny even though he tackles some of the most over used subject matters. For example "She Useta Be" about a girl that was hot when she was young and put on a FEW pounds later on. Another is the Eminem influenced ode to killing his partner. Devin makes these topics fresh again.

Musically the album is very laid back defying the raunchy lyrical content but goes well with his lazy rap flow. Being independent Devin can ignore all rules regarding sampling and he really takes liberties with a wide range of samples which I cannot always place.

The album also scores because of Devin's ability to switch it up and take on more serious topics like on "Lil' Girl Lost" and "What A Job". Both tracks are definite highlights of the album.

Ultimately there is no need to be over analytical on this one, some will hate and some will love it, I just happen to be one of those that love it

5 out of 5 stars Devin Does It.......2007-04-09

I liked this album. I liked a majority of the tracks, great beats and descent lyrics. I liked What a Job, Nothing to Roll With, and Almighty Dollar. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars One Dude you can't sleep on........2006-10-19

As I've mentioned in many of my other reviews, hip-hop that originates from Houston has a close spot in my heart. DJ Screw's style of slowed-down, chopped up music hooked me upon my first listen of it, and even though he's gone now, the rest of H-Town continue to carry on his legacy of slow-tempo, syrupy music, with a slurry accent.

I've got a lot of favorites residing in Houston, ranging from Chamillionaire, to Big Moe, to Paul Wall, to Lil' Keke, to Lil' Pokey, among others. However, my favorite of the entire bunch is, ironically, the rapper with the least amount of ties to DJ Screw - Devin The Dude. I was turned onto Devin through Dr. Dre's 2001 record, like many others presumably were. His chorus on "**** You" was so explicit, yet so hilarious, and his verse was so smooth, I had to check this kid out. Finding out he comes from the H-Town turned me onto the cat even more, and once i listened to Tryin' Ta Live, I was hooked.

Devin The Dude is the smoothest emcee this side of .. heck, I really don't know who's smoother than Devin. Some would argue Too $hort is, but even the first pimp of rap had a hard time matching the charisma that resonates from Devin's body. Not only is this Dude the coolest thing this side of Smirnoff Ice, he also has lyrics to back it up; he may not be the mathematical emcee some backpackers fiend for, but he does have tight rhymes, laced with humor rarely found elsewhere.

Southern grooves are found all over this album, and hilarious tales are retold by the player you can never hate on. This album and To Tha X-Treme are both tight as hell, but I think this one may rank a little bit above it's successor, due to songs like "I-Hi" and "Lacville '79." Still, if you're one of the hip-hop heads who enjoys good music no matter where it comes from, Devin's sophomore effort, Tryin' Ta Live, is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Just Tryin Ta Live.......2006-09-26

Another great record to have in your collection. I enjoyed it a lot. Fans of Too $hort should really be into this. Chances are if you like Short Dog you'll probably be into Devin for the same Reasons. Check it out and see if this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Rap not Hip-pop.......2006-08-14

Perfect name for this CD. this is an album that could have been written by you or me if only we had the talent. Instead of taken the Southern cop-out route, Devin decided to do what the great blues and country singers of the past did, and that write something EVERYONE can relate too and find entertaing at the same time. Instead of standing on a soap box and rapping about trappin, killin, and everything else a dumb black male is expectied to write about, he talks about not being able to get into the club cause hes unknown and broke, getting kicked out of the club cause hes too drunk, hoping his car will make it from point A to point B, trying to be a playa only to have it blow up in his face. All stuff that we've done and still do. Instead of saying hes the one that did all the killing he'll speak from the point of view of the person who heard something happen and rushed down to see what was going on. Instead of saying "I got all the Dro" he celebrates the fact that he found a bag underneath his couch seat. We've all been there.

OK im sure alot of you like who is this guy, NAH he cant be good i never heard of this guy!!! Well guess what sometimes you have to look for good music it wont always come to you. If you want to know what this guy sounds like i would say alot of his songs have an andre 3000 (from outkast) feel to them the way he uses his voice. This truly is mellow and flows beautiful i cant critisize this guy he is amazing, greatest songs of his i think are "see what i can pull" "doobie ash tray" and "its a shame ft poo bear" dont just buy this cd buy all three you wont be dissapointed

5 out of 5 stars The Dude.......2006-09-26

An Essential Rap Record for all those who enjoy just some smooth/cool gangsta shh... Everything about this album has already been said earlier. Just do yourself the favor and cop it. His BEST, in my opinion.

P.S. Make sure you play this LOUD when driving around. Peace!

5 out of 5 stars Devin's Tha Man.......2006-04-02

"The Dude" is sadly a very under-rated and overlooked album, however it happens to be one of the best records out there. Devin's smooth, chilled out flows over the hella relaxed beat makes for great music to smoke to. "The Dude" has much rotation in my CD Player, and if y'all would give it a listen, im sure it'd get much play in yours too. Peace Rap-A-Lot 4 Life!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Show Em What They P**** Made 4.......2005-05-17

Women, Weed, Alcohol, what else is there? Devin's best release to date. "Show Em" f/ K.B. stands out as one of the album's highlights as Devin & K.B. go back & forth on whether or not to f*** a pair of busted females in filthy lyrical verses respectively. "See What I Could Pull" isn't too far behind as Devin's lay back and let the p**** come to me style is in full effect. Other noteworthy tracks include the mellow no bull**** serenade "Bust One For Ya" as well as "Sticky Green" f/ Scarface. There are a few filler tracks that keep the album from classic status, but you cant get much closer than this.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 star solo debut from the Dude.......2005-04-30

Just from the album cover you know what to expect. Some funny dirty lyrics and plenty of weed & alcohol references. Probably tied for my favorite Devin album (as of 4/05) with his "To The X-Treme". This is his most consistant of his first 3. Of the 16 tracks on here (3 are also on Scarface's "My Homies" album), 1 is ok, 2 are near classics and the rest are great or good songs. Guests are a little more common than he has on his other 2 albums but you still get enough of the Dufde to satisfy you. Production is great for him, relaxed and laid back beats laid by, Devin & Domo (each do 4 songs), Tone Capone, Scarface, and N.O. Joe each do 2, and Mr. Lee & Vintage each do a track. A must have album for his fans or any fan of dirty lyrics and funny stories (like DJ Quik, Akinyele, or Too $hort).

#1 - 9.5 (great dirty song)
#2 - 9 (f/ Scarfce -- about weed)
#3 - 8.5 (dirty song -- f/ Spice 1 & DMG)
#4 - 8.5 (also on Scarface's "My Homies" album)
#5 - 7.5
#6 - 8.5 (f/ Randy-Ran)
#8 - 8
#9 - 8.5 (also on Scarface's "My Homies" album)
#10 - 9 (upbeat song -- f/ K.B. & K-Dee)
#11 - 9 (relaxing beat (also on Scarface's "My Homies" album)
#12 - 8 (f/ Scarface, Jugg Mugg, Killemall, Ant Live)
#13 - 8 (very dirty one -- f/ K.B.)
#14 - 8.5 (anotehr dirty upbeat song -- f/ K.B. & Odd Squad)
#15 - 8 (f/ K.B. & K-Dee)
#16 - 9 (funny song about how he can't quit drinkin' and smokin')
#17 - 9.5 (great beat and story -- short 12 bar verses however --- f/ Kuirshan)

If you're into Redman, Luda, Outkast, than Devin might be a great artist to get into....

Once I started listening to Devin i was hooked....His beats are very laid back and his lyrics and flow perfectly compliment them....What I love about Devin is just his laid back approach on the mic that seems to come out effortlessly....He crafts great stories that usually involve gettin weed and pu**y....But hey, it makes for great music....I highly suggest startin with this album--he might get ya hooked

Despite the album's title, the only thing extreme about this CD is how masterful the laconic rapper is in the art of lounging. Houston's king of chill singsongs his way through a languid haze of weed smoke and booty calls, offering 17 tracks of icy coolness. Impressively, the entire album slouches along at the same, easy tempo: this isn't for the dance floor but the after-party. A range of producers (D-Boy, Domo, Cory Mo, and others) deserve credit for keeping the vibe ultra-smooth, soulful, and slinky. Devin is perfect with that kind of groove, and he spends most of his time kicking verses about smoking out and chasing women. It's not always the deepest content, though songs like "Briarpatch" and the anti-police anthem, "Go Fight Some Other Crime," show off his subversive side. --Oliver Wang

WEll for those who already know, there isn't much left to say. I love Devin and all of his cd's and witty verses put on others tracks. His music relaxes, makes u think and makes fun of ordinary everyday things. You will be amused to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Smoked Out Brilliance {5 Stars} [Review No. 400!!!].......2006-12-18

Too many great cuts on this album for it to get anything less than 4 stars. I mean, tracks like "Too Cute", "To Tha X-Treme", "Go Fight Some Other Crime", "Devin's Medley", "Briarpatch", and "Right Now" bring this album up to 4 stars all by themselves. He even sprinkled in a few topics out side of blunts and women like police harrasment and heartbreak amongst other things. Devin's down to earth, humurous lyrics and laid back, everyman aura is virtually impossible not to love....especially when he's supplied with dope production. Once he gets that combination going, he's practically addictive and hard to turn away from.

There aren't any wack tracks or lyrics, but there are a few cuts that just didn't grab this listener. "What?" was great lyrically, but the production simply had no affect on me. Honestly, that's the only track that I would label as skip material. The rest of the album is great.

To That X-Treme is one of those albums that has a vibe that's all but impossible to recreate. It's also one of those albums that only Devin can make; no one else could possibly come off this smooth over these beats. Easily one of 2004's best albums (and top 5 on my best rap albums of 2004 listmania list), I recommend making this album a collection piece. You can thank me later.

Standout Tracks: To Tha X-Treme, Anythang, Too Cute feat. Erica Marion (My Favorite), She Was Gone, Go Fight Some Other Crime, Right Now, Devin's Medley, Tha Funk feat. Eightball, and Briarpatch

4 out of 5 stars To Tha X-Treme, and back, Devin delivers again........2006-10-19

The Devinition of Cool; no, I didn't mispell that. Devin is the most laid-back, chilled out, mellow individual you'll ever run across in the game. He doesn't have an incredibly large range of subject matter, but what he does rap about, he manages to do better than 95% of emcees who tried before him. And, despite being such a calm character, he does manage to get deeper than the average rapper; his philosophies on life are truly worth listening to, as he never chooses side in the arguement of what's right, and what's wrong. He simply watches, lights up some Buddha, observes, and gives us his report.

He may be one greened-up dude, but he doesn't justify this hobby as right. Devin doesn't tell his listeners to 'spark some up' like so many other emcees; instead, he'd rather you give you a musical high, while he is under the influence of marijuana. It's almost like his high wears off on you through your music; because as you listen to this album, all of the struggles in your life dissapear, and you're taken to a carefree realm, where your mind is at the greatest stage of clarity.

It sounds so deep, and it is; however, this is not Killah Priest knowledge that Devin's dropping. Devin's just your average man, with the only difference being that he is able to tap into his mind, as well as his conscience, and pour his mellow little heart out all over his music. Devin is proof that the simplest things in life are truly the most complex; and explaining the unique vibes Devin gives you with his music would take far too long for this review.

So, how do I sum up Devin? He's dope as hell. Fly beats, littered with even flyer rhymes. Devin never turns in a weak performance; the beat may fail him, but he will never dissapoint on the microphone. Every track on this album is as dope as the next. It's impossible to deny Devin of the props he deserves; pick this up if you enjoy good music. End of story.

3 out of 5 stars dope.......2006-09-29

not as dope as "jus tryin' to live" but still another great hip-hop CD to add under devin's belt. u like devin the dude...u will like this CD. but byfar the worse cd he has made. yet its better than the radio. its pretty dope

5 out of 5 stars Im Feelin This One.......2006-08-18

Mayne, I love this album. Devin makes mostly mellow kick back and chill at tha end of tha day type of music. He mostly talks about sex, relationships, smokin weed, and other bluntly real topics in broad detail. If there was ever a 'Bob Marley of hip hop' it would be Devin tha Dude. If you get tired of tha fake gangsta rappers talkin about lives you will probably never ever live, brang yourself back 2 reality & pop in some Devin tha Dude. Get this album.

5 out of 5 stars The Simple Truth........2006-07-26

This is one of the best Hip Hop Albums of all time. It is definately one of the most slept on albums. Devin will always be underappreciated. He does not talk about Bling, Guns, Money, Shooting or all of the unimportant things in life that the music Industry is making artist shove down the young African Americans throat. The Subjectts are more down to earth and simple. Now some are explicit but they are all things that the average person can relate to. All of the songs are delivered through his ultra smooth flow that make rapping seem easy. You will catch yourself laughing through the entire CD because he says the things that most of you are scared to say. Bottom line is Devin is SIMPLY super talented and provided us with a Classic CD in the Dude. Its 8 years Old and I still Never leave home without it.

5 out of 5 stars Smokin Tunes Fron The Dude.......2006-06-14

Devin's 1998 debut is filled with such an entertainment value ranging from the beats to the lyrical content. The beats on most of the songs are awesome. Generally, they are laid back Texas deep G-Funk with a nice bass to them. He can flow tight and his delivery is funny and clever. The way he dsescribes his sexcapades, his obsession with dank, and even him boo boo'n will get you crackin' up throughout the album! Devin also has some deeper tracks about life and making choices in songs like "Alright," and "Do What You Wanna Do," and how people can be so scrutinizing and critical in "Write And Wrong." The guitar riffs on "One Day At A Time" "Alright" "Write And Wrong" and half of the other tracks are hella funky, so the album will also get you into a relaxed mood. Anyone into Old School Dirty South rap, West Coast rap, or G-Funk will have instant satisfaction with The Dude, but anyone into good, keep-it-real, witty rap, will dig this underground classic as well!

5 out of 5 stars I had to do it!!!.......2004-12-28

I bought this album early in my college career and became infamous for it. It was first heard at our parties, and people kept asking us "did Outkast do a new, more mellow CD about smoking?"
NO. This isn't Outkast, but it's great nonetheless. Personally, there are a few tracks I could live without (I'm not a fan of "Show Em" of "ligole Bips"), but the standout tracks of "Mo fa Me," "Do what you want," "See What I can Pull" and even "Georgy" quickly made me forget about the tracks I don't care for much.

This is down south, slow drawl, light up some Coughee music. It's laid back, mellow, and just the right tone for chillin, getting ready to go out or just playin at the party. Most of the tracks are good and everyone I've shown it to has asked me "who is that."

I've already had this CD stolen from me on 3 different occassions and it's been worth buying again each time. If you're not sure if you'll like the album, but you like Down south rap, buy Scarface's "My Homies" album, as a couple of the tracks are on there and are just a fine sample of the great things in store for this album.

I love it and almost 6 years later, it's STILL bumpin in my car regularly.

5 out of 5 stars Very good Cd.......2002-12-25

I just got to say that if you see anything thats chopped up by Michael Watts...Get it. He is a very good Dj. But this is a good cd. i heard it chopped up before i heard the regular version but thats how i do most of my music. Very very good cd. When you are listening to it you know what hes talking about. He dont talk about diamonds in his teeth and that kind of stuff. He talks about relationships and drinking beer and smoking weed. Go and get this cd.

      4 out of 5 stars Smoked Out Brilliance.....Chopped & Screwed {4 Stars}.......2006-12-18

This is pretty much my review for the regular version of To Tha X-Treme. I gave this a lower rating because some songs simply don't work when they're chopped and screwed. Also, you should know that there are less tracks on this version.
