Amazon.com essential recording
Proclaiming his intentions with "Are You Ready for the Country?" Young detoured briefly to the Nashville mainstream. On this No. 1 1972 album, even the singer's acquired-taste voice comes across smooth and beautiful--the smash "Heart of Gold," with steel guitars and Linda Ronstadt's backup vocals, is by far Young's most commercial-sounding song. His usual dissonant touches, like the otherworldly guitar in "Out on the Weekend," are less spooky in this new context. The last two tracks, the deceptively gentle "The Needle and the Damage Done" and the hypnotic rocker "Words (Between the Lines of Age)," predict "Tonight's the Night," Young's haunted 1975 classic. --Steve Knopper
Customer Reviews:
Folk-esque classic.......2007-07-15
Neil Young's unique folk-esque music with his own distinct voice, has been enjoyed by many.
This 1972 album is probabely his best.
Starting with the laidback Out On The Weekend and going on to the title track labum, and the melancholy wailing of A Man Needs A Maid.
Then possibly his best known song of loneliness and heartache- Heart of Gold.
Then there is the contemplative song of youth and age - Old Man.
Neil Diamond was another classic of the forever memorable 70's and anybody who loves folk will want this in their collection.
Great Music but..........2007-05-16
This CD will not work in a Mac Drive. It works in every other CD player. Both parties claim ignorance. Customer service at its best.
A "must have" for any respectable collection.......2007-04-12
This album was released when I was 10 years old. I remember listening to it when my older brother first purchased it. I almost forgot it even existed until I recalled it after listening to CSN&Y Deja VU. All 10 tracks are incredible. It's truly a great recording. My 14 year old daughter even recognized some of the tracks on this album which was released 35 years ago. It's nice to jam to music that has words you can understand and have meaning. When my brother learned that I had purchased the CD he imediately took credit for "teaching me well" on quality classic music.
NEIL YOUNG'S TIMELESS AUTUMN CLASSIC !.......2007-04-11
Originally released in 1972, Neil Young's Harvest includes his only number one hit single, Heart of Gold, together with nine other songs, including some that are the best of his forty year career. This is the album that Neil himself said was his best. It is a varied album, that explores many levels of the human experience, including loneliness, isolation, grief, madness, love, and acceptance. Contradictions are everywhere in these songs, including the first, Out on the Weekend. Young sings of the lonely boy who can't relate to joy, but also about the "woman so fine" who loves him. This song, like most on this album, includes acoustic guitar, harmonica, and pedal steel guitar. In the next song, Harvest, Young sings, "Will I see you give more than I can take?, Will I only harvest some?", as if he will not allow himself to completely let go and fall in love. Continuing this theme of isolation, A Man Needs A Maid starts with "My life is changing in so many ways, I don't know who to trust anymore". With it's haunting melody, the London Symphony Orchestra accompaniment, and Young's fragile voice, the song allows you to empathize with it's character's uncertainty. Next is Heart of Gold, where the loner sings of looking for true love, but feels he is running out of time. With James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt providing the backing vocals, Ben Keith playing beautiful pedal steel guitar phrases, and Young on acoustic guitar and harmonica, singing of traveling and being a miner for a heart of gold, the song works perfectly to conjure up the image of a decent man searching the world over for a decent woman to love. Old Man is a song Neil wrote about the 70-year-old cattleman ranch hand who lived at his ranch. It is another song in which Young portrays a loner, and is probably Neil's most popular song ever. There's A World is a symphony (with the LSO) where hope and acceptance are the prevalent themes. With lyrics like "All God's children", "Never worry", and "Could be good things in the air for you", it's an uplifting song. In Alabama, Young calls the state out on Jim Crow laws and racist attitudes. Recorded in a barn at his ranch with electric guitars, a pedal steel guitar, piano, and drums, Young brought in Stephen Stills and David Crosby to sing the backing vocals. The rock song sounds great and also makes it's point clear. Needle and the Damage Done was recorded live at a California University with just Neil and an acoustic guitar. Written about band member Danny Whitten (who later died from a drug overdose), the song is both poignant and haunting. Words (Between the Lines of Age) closes the album (and also gets points for the great title). This was also recorded in Young's barn with electric guitars, a pedal steel guitar, piano, and drums. It features Dylan influenced lyrics, and a long guitar solo (Neil plays great guitar solos). Harvest is an album that's best listened to in the Fall of the year. With it's folk-country sounds, reflective themes, and even it's autumnal album cover and title, it blends well with the mood of the season. Harvest is a timeless autumn classic that you will enjoy year after year.
RE-MASTER THIS CD!!!.......2007-04-11
The sound quality on this CD is poor by early 90's standards. How did 'Reactor' and 'Hawks and Doves' rate re-mastering priority over this? RE-MASTER THIS CD....PLEASE!

When Neil Young seems about to zig, he zags. Two years after 1990's loud Ragged Glory, he retreats to an old world of steel guitars, gentle folk melodies, and pristine country choruses. (That's Linda Ronstadt, who helped make 1972's Harvest a hit album, singing backup on the follow-up.) Young name-drops Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix, and his old dog, King, in rich reminiscences about the musical ride he and his fans have shared since the late '60s. The album, as Young sings in "One of These Days," is "a long letter to all the good friends I've known." --Steve Knopper
Customer Reviews:
A return to his folk roots.......2007-04-10
After more than a decade of venturing in various musical directions, Young returned to his folk roots with Harvest Moon. It was a welcome return and this has to be one of his all time best albums. It was his biggest commercial success since 1980's Live Rust and lead to a renaissance of his career. Several songs from the album received airplay including "War of Man", "Unknown Legend", and the title track, "Harvest Moon". If you like Youngs accoustic based music, you will love this album.
Basking in the Twilight .......2007-04-10
Neil Young's manager once predicted that he would never be hotter than he was immediately following the release of " Harvest". Neil answered by telling him he would always burn, but never rust..... burning keeps you bright.
" Harvest Moon" reminds long time Young fans what they love about him in the first place; the gorgeous song writing. Of course the rowdy guitar sometimes takes center stage, as well as deference to the acoustic model, but this CD gives equal time to the vocal instrument paired with rolling melodies.
The first two, " Legend..." and " Hank to Hendrix" have a similar tune, but the portraits are different. Young's writing creates a vivid picture of the everyday heroine in " Legend";he then proceeds to plead with the lady he's loved through many genres in " H to H".
" War of Man" means more today than upon its release. We are in a literal war with the planet, one that escalates every day. Assaulting humanity, torturing the environment. Oh yeah, we are " Living With War."
" Harvest Moon" is a beautiful love song; don't listen to the naysayers who tag it as middle aged drivel. In fact, most of these songs seem more genuine than other works, and with Neil Young that's saying a lot. Young always bears it all, but the songs featured here demonstrate an ability to continue to grow while reflecting on where you've been. That is the ultimate we can ask from a singer/songwriter.
Neil Young observes and creates. With " Harvest Moon" he also mellows, painting a picture of fall in its finest form.
HARVEST MOON, YOU'RE NO HARVEST !.......2007-04-03
In 1992 Harvest Moon was hyped as the long awaited sequel to Neil Young's classic album, Harvest, but other than the name, and the musicians, they don't have much in common. Where Harvest found the maverick loner faced with tragedy, madness, loneliness, and fighting back, Harvest Moon finds Young basking in retirement-like complacency. In Harvest, he crossed the ocean, searching for a heart of gold. Harvest Moon finds him in his mini-van, dreaming. In Harvest, he sang of the tragedy of losing a friend and band member to drug addiction and overdose. In Harvest Moon, he sings of losing his hound dog. In Harvest, he personally takes on the state of Alabama for Jim Crow. On Harvest Moon, he tells us about how the ravages of war affect birds and animals, but doesn't directly take a stance against any particular war. Harvest Moon is very pretty to listen to. The production is glossy and there are female backing vocals on all the songs. It just doesn't have the emotional substance that it's predecessor had. The two title songs tell the tale. In Harvest, Young sings "let me fill your cup with the promise of a man". In Harvest Moon, he sings "I want to see you dance again"(Let's skip bingo tonight and doe-cee-doe!). Harvest Moon does include some really good songs, one great song (Natural Beauty), and is a very good Neil Young album, but it will never be a great classic that people will always remember him for.
Neil's best mellow effort.......2007-02-22
Harvest Moon is everything Harvest is cracked up to be, but isn't. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Harvest, but I'm also probably the only one of Neil's fans who feels this explicit sequel is better. I normally would complain about the record's country elements, but they actually make the better songs as good as they are. What are those songs, you ask? My personal favorites are Unknown Legend; From Hank to Hendrix; the swaying, mellow title track; War of Man; and the ten-minute finale, Natural Beauty. Looks like a five-star album, right? Too bad that's not quite true - get rid of the banjo-laden Old King; acoustic ballad You and Me and One of These Days, and that would be true. As it stands, this is a must. Be sure to get its two predecessors as well: Freedom and Ragged Glory are also near-classics.
On the short list.......2006-11-02
I bought this CD when it first came out (was it really almost 15 years ago???), and to this day it is still one of my favorite CDs. So nice when you're in the mood for something mellow.

Customer Reviews:
2 classic Dolly albums.......2007-05-16
It's a shame that it took an import to get these 2 classic Dolly albums on CD. But they did a great job with this issue. The liner notes are not skimpy, and even include full pages of the front and back covers of both albums. "All I Can Do" had 2 hit singles, the title cut and "Hey, Lucky Lady." "New Harvest..." had the hit "Light of a Clear Blue Morning." The rest of the albums is not filler, rather more great and heartfelt music from Dolly. The track "Shattered Image" is awesome, as is her version of Emmylou Harris' "Boulder to Birmingham." It's high time these 2 great albums found their way onto CD. The packaging is far better than previous import "2-fers," and the songs speak for themselves. I plan on getting the other recent 2-fers ("Great Balls of Fire/Dolly Dolly Dolly" and "Burlap & Satin/Real Love") because of the quality of this release. Every Dolly fan should have these in their collection, you will not be disappointed!
Dolly: All i can do / new harvest first gathering.......2007-05-15
2 of my many fav Dolly albums on the same CD - awesome! It's a must have for any collector of Dolly's music...
Timeless.......2007-05-13
Anyone with a passion for old music will appreciate this cd. This is Dolly as she was leaving Porter Wagner to venture out on her own. This cd shows that she got off to a great start.
Excited About This Release! .......2007-04-06
"All I Can Do" is one of my favorite Dolly albums and this 2-album set is just loaded with gems. I was delighted to see that for her 2002 record, she re-recorded the song "Shattered Image," one of my favorites by Miss Dolly. Also on this double album CD is Dolly's first album - "New Harvest...First Gathering"- that she produced after she left Porter Wagoner. This album contains another gem on it - "Applejack" that has become another Dolly classic and is performed at almost all of her live shows, even to this day. One of my favorite songs in all of her catalog. I was very excited to finally have both albums available in a digital format, instead of on LP, so I could listen to it at my computer and in the car. A fabulous 2-album disc! Go get it!
Two More Rare Dolly LP's Come To CD Life!.......2007-04-05
In my opinion "All I can Do" and "New Harvest...First Gathering" are 2 of the best Dolly Parton albums ever and for the first time they get renewed life in CD format. Older fans will relish in hearing these beautiful albums again in much better sound quality and newer Dolly fans will discover a Dolly just before she became a superstar. The sound is excellent with beautiful artwork and packaging. The LP's have been redone fully with album covers fully displayed in CD form. The folks in the UK should be applauded for the work they have done here. Get your copies of these CD's now as they have not been issued in the U.S. and they will become collector's items very quickly the same way as Dolly's CD issue of "Here You Come Again" did in 1998. Dolly has never sounded so good!

This is honest music..........2006-03-16
Every time I listen to Jay Ungar's Harvest Home, which is often, I am reminded of a simpler time. His music resonates within my innermost being. This is honest music. It helps me appreciate the joyful, robust time of basic timeless values. If hard, loud, electric sounds is what your heart beats for then you probably will want to take a pass on this. But if you enjoy the clean beautiful sounds of an acoustic guitar and the mellow music that only can be produced by a country fiddle then take my advice and get this CD, in fact it would be a safe assumption that if Jay Ungar and Molly Mason (Jay's lovely wife) are involved in the music in any way... buy it

Toris Harvest Home review.......2005-09-12
I have enjoyed the cd. My lest favorite is the fist song because the singing takes away from the instrumental.
Wonderful, Soothing, Uplifting.......2002-08-12
Every cut on this CD is perfect, from start to finish!!
I can listen to it over and over, and never tire of it. The cuts range from soothing to uplifting. It has a pure, genuine quality that Unger and Mason translate wonderfully to the listening audience!!
Great CD - well worth the listen.......2002-01-13
I first bought this CD based upon two songs from it I heard on a celtic music show. The Mardi Gras and Aaron Copeland . I was a little skeptical buying a cd titled 'harvest home' - since I do not particularly care for songs about the seasons. However this is quite an impressive CD. The first tracks are individual songs about the harvest. However the most impressive thing about this CD is how it builds to the last 4 tracks on the seasons weaving together the mixture of songs that were in the first part of the CD. I have also bought lover's waltz and while I liked a couple of individual songs on it - This album in total is much better.
It is amazing how the first songs can be played or interwoven into other tunes in an impressive fashion. Every song on this CD can stand on it's own merit - what makes this a 5 star CD is how they all play together. This is one of those CD that sounds better each time you play it.
music for all ages........2001-02-25
I got the CD for xmas this year at my request and love almost every song on it. Even my 9 year old grandson loves it and insisted I dub him a tape to take home with him. Keep them coming Ungar and Mason. Great listening.

Album Description
Every obstacle, every struggle, and all the negativity you may experience in the big city holds true even in the backwaters, away from the neon lights. Each has its mirrored examples of hate, anger, and pain. But these things are merely seeds to be collected, planted, and then harvested. At the end, you reap what you sow.
Boondox brings to the rap scene a rural underground sound that is more intense, more gritty, more real than the urban beats you hear on the radio. This bold new artist, backed by the proven talents of Psychopathic Records, will cause the rain to fall, invigorationg the seeds of hardship. The Harvest calls for a new era that will return life back to the rap scene.
Boondox brings the southern USA style of rap to Psychopathic Records, creating a brand new fusion to the industry.
The Harvest incorporates the production talents of the legendary Mike E Clark of Funhouse Studios.
The album features guests from the Psychopathic Records family, including Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid Blaze, and AMB.
Customer Reviews:
Excited for the Red Mist.......2007-05-20
While Psychopathic has been falterering in recent years, wich ICP's ever growing rock ensemble sound, Twiztid's either hit or miss albums we had Blaze to deliver one great and one mediocre album and ABK to latch onto, AMB weren't doing anything, after losing ABK, things seemed bleek, but then comes Boondox. Very fresh sound, Seven starts things off nicely, but Out Here is definetly the first highlight, Lady In The Jaguar w/ICP is a classic and hilarious 70's funk sound, They Pray With Snakes, probably the most musical song on the album does wonders, as does the hidden track Diggin' Myself Out. Rollin' Hard is the only real metal/rap fusion found here and its a very good song. While some claim the latest Psy releases have lost their wickedness, this album retains it fully with the sick beats, revitalized violent imagery of the classic Red Mist w/ Blaze & Twiztid, as well as the demented love songs It Ain't A Thang and even amazing ballads like Lake Of Fire (probably the second best song here) and Angel Like. My personal fav on the album was the hilarious redneck moonshine anthem Sippin', great unique southern sound and then sing along chorus is immensely enjoyable. While the guest spots from ICP (and others) have been missing a lot on others albums Boondox seems to bring the best out in them, even AMB's spot on the title track is better than anything found on their Blood In Blood Out album. So with that in mind, this is definetly the best Psy album since Hatchet Warrior or 1 Less G, aligning itself with Milenko, Mostasteless, and Ringmaster as the label's best work. Make way for the Skarcrow

Let's face it...recently Psychopathic has been circling the drain...artists have been leaving left and right, fueds have emerged, and releases have been steadily getting more and more dissapointing. Drive By, SV, MOTFG, and the constant postponing of SWK. With the music changing to a more and more sythetic...well, CRAP, and with the only few who know how to release a good album only releasing so much (ie BLAZE, TWIZTID) to keep us satisfied,
BOONDOX brings a well needed revival in the label.
Simpley put, this album is the BEST album released from the record lable since Jeckle Bros. PERIOD!! Don't get me wrong, COLTUN GRUNDY, CHAINSMOKER, PHATSO, and CALM ep were AMAZING!! But Boondox just tops them all, giving that extra push to make an album where each song is just as memorable and deserving of praise as the last.
Some of the best moments on this album are the guest shots, LADY IN THE JAGUAR, RED MIST, and my personal favorite, THE HARVEST. I always thought BLAZE, as amazing a solo artist as he is, was a very good guest artist. Along with Twiztid, ICP, and AMB, Boondox seems to bring out the best in them, that good ol' feeling from back in the day when things were done right.
If you are a disgruntled PSY listener, PICK THIS ALBUM UP NOW!!!
Wow.......2007-01-19
In my opinion, Boondox is the future of Psychopathic Records. When its other artists (Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid, ect) album quality has faltered in recent years it's nice to see a solid album dropping with the hatchetman emblem attached. There is, honestly, not a single bad track on this disc.
I must admit though, I was apprehensive at first when I heard about Boondox. A southern rapper signing with Psychopathic?! Didn't this go against everything the clowns have been preaching over the past few years?! And he's a scarecrow! What the hell?! That's even worse! But I am so glad that I gave him the chance. I am without doubt that he is the future of Psychopathic Records and will one day rule in place of ICP and Twiztid.
BUY THIS ALBUM!
Southern' Fried EVIL.......2007-01-16
Okay, let me say this first: I have been a juggalo for about 5 years now, and I can safely say that after hearing Psychopathic had signed a "southern" rapper, my initial thoughts were than the Wicked Clownz had forsaken everything they once stood for, basically stood up and shouted: "WE. LIED." I myself am, indeed, a southerner, but no one feels ICP's anti-racist messages as strong as the sensible people in the south who are forced to hear such ignorance on a daily basis. I still yet was intrigued, however: AMB, the Hatchet's former new addition, are not original enough to captivate my interest. Hell, the ONLY thing original about AMB is that they don't wear face paint. And yet here is someone that is taking the Wickedness and putting a whole new spin on it. Hell, the entire CONCEPT is original: Taking southern music and mixing it with HORRORCORE RAP? It sounds almost too good to work.
It isn't.
Boondox is perhaps the freshest, and without a doubt most WICKED new artist on Psychopathic in years. Lately, alot of the Hatchet's stuff has been going in new directions (i.e., The Calm) or staying in the same direction but being far, far too soft (i.e., Blood In Blood Out). But Boondox makes me, as well as many of my juggalo homies, go back to a simpler time in our lives, a time when we'd get home from a crappy day at school, close our bedroom doors, and crank ICP or Twiztid as loud as we possibly could, venting off anger and frustration. Boondox is a return to classic Horrorcore Rap- raw, edgy, cold, vengeful, and sometime just downright evil. At the same time, it has an opposing meaning to it, something between the lines, something pure. And at the same time, the Skarcrow is experimenting with the style (as are his producers, particularly Mike E. Clark) and offering the music from a "country" perspective, making all us southern juggalos feel even more at home with the Family. I'll give you a breakdown of the album:
1) Intro (N/A)--Some clips from Children of The Corn and such. Just an intro.
2) Seven (5/5)--DAMN. This is probably the best "introduction" track on a Hatchet album EVER. Boondox is a really good rapper, but it's the killer chorus that makes this track awesome
3) Out Here (4/5)--Basically a song reppin' the south. Great track, and once again, great chorus
4) It Ain't A Thang (5/5)--Boondox's version of the classic Psycho Sex Song. As is expected, it's vulgar, but it also has a lot more meaning than other sex songs of the breed. VERY southern beat.
5)Diggin' Myself Out (5/5)--For some reason, this track isn't listed on the back of the jewel case. But whatever. This is a deep, wicked track that looks deeply into the subject of death and why we fear it. Some might call this kind of song "classic Psychopathic"
6)Lady In The Jaguar (5/5)-- Hysterical song featuring ICP and a wacky 70's Funk beat.
7)They Prey With Snakes (5/5)--The album's "single". AWESOME beat and a lyrical topic that I don't think has EVER been rapped about in, like, the history of rap.
8)Rollin' Hard (5/5)--DEAR GOD. This track is EVIL, EVIL, EVIL. It also has a HARD Heavy Metal beat. About Boondox doing alot of drugs ("rollin'") and then buying a prostitute and...well, if I go any further this may not get posted.
9)The Harvest (3/5)--Featuring AMB. Look, I don't hate AMB. I honestly don't. But this is pretty much the stinker of the album. It's really not bad, it just doesn't go anywhere. The chorus is kind of stupid too.
10)Sippin' (5/5)-- A drinking song. Probably has the most southern beat to it of the whole album. Freakin' great song all-round.
11)Lake of Fire (5/5)--This is, without a doubt, THE BEST TRACK ON THE ALBUM. Absolutely atonishing rock ballad (there's only one bit of rapping at all) and metaphorical lyricism. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.
12)Red Mist (5/5)--KILLER collaboration track with Twiztid and Blaze. A music video was made for this song.
13) Angel Like (5/5)--A slow acoustic rock song about love, betrayal, and murder. Excellent conclusion to the album.
Best Psy release in years. .......2006-09-13
Boondox's mix of southern rap with midwest wicked rap brings a new sound to psychopathic, and it couldn't have come at a better time. Over the last five years, just about every release to come from this company has had subpar production and feels like the artist didn't put their full effort into the project. Boondox, however, seemed to have really wanted to make a splash with his debut, and thanks to the returning Mike Clark, the music really comes alive. If you were a fan of psychopathic betwwen 1992 and 1999 you won't be dissapointed with it.

Track list needs work.......2004-01-12
If you're looking to get started with Alphaville, you could do worse than to pick up this expensive import, but you could also also spend a bit less and arguably get more of their best work for your money.
The good: the inclusion of the achingly gorgeous "Lassie Come Home" and the giddy, goofy, dance-around-the-living-room classic "Sensations," two tracks from AV's second album _Afternoons in Utopia_ that didn't seem to get enough attention the first time around.
The bad: sadly, the third album just wasn't very good, and the four tracks chosen to represent it here don't seem likely to convince anyone otherwise.
I say, skip this one, pick up _Forever Young_ and _Afternoons in Utopia_ instead -- hey, they're both available used at bargain-basement prices -- and burn yourself a nice mix featuring the selections from those albums included here, plus "Fallen Angel," "Universal Daddy," "Summer in Berlin," and whatever else strikes your fancy.
Then, once you're suitably obsessed, pick up _Prostitute_ and _Salvation_ (albums #4 and #5), whose pleasures are myriad.
Harvest your favourites!.......2003-09-24
Alphaville is one of greatest syth-pop bands in the 80s! Absolutely, Alphaville seems to be as good as Depeche Mode and Duran Duran. This collection has an important place in Alphaville's career because after this their music changed darker and sophististic. You can find classic songs Forever Young, Jerusalem and Big in Japan for this album. Some important songs are unfortunately missing for exemple Fallen Angel. My favourite tracks are a beautiful and major Jerusalem, a terrific Dance With Me, a mournful and fine quitar tasted Romeos and awesome and evergreen Forever Young. There are some songs that Alphaville would have droppep out. Booring Summer Rain and too long For A Million are these songs. All in all, If you like syth-pop, this is a great buy for you.
Best selection of Alphaville songs.......2000-06-11
This is definitely the best collection of their work on one CD, as other compilations that I have seen do not include one or two of their top efforts. The band has a typical 80's pop sound with a hint of rock in numerous places, lots of synth. Lyrics are strong and production excellent. The main tracks off the album have gripping melodies - "Big In Japan", "Sounds Like A Melody", "Dance With Me" and "Forever Young". The depth and reach of the sound is just fantastic, and you will definitely be exercising the louder levels of your audio system. The other songs definitely hold their own and grow on the listener as time goes by. This is a definite buy, go and get it.
Great album........1999-04-29
After first bringing this album back to the US back in 1992, I have had numerous requests for copies from friends. I have dutifully brought back copies on every trip to Germany or the Czech Republic. The selection of singles exceeds in quality those on any of the US-release Alphaville greatest hits albums. If you only buy one Alphaville album, this is the one to have!

A little too slick and a little too much Galway.......2004-01-16
Based on the reviews I read about this album, I had high expectations. I am sorry to say that the album leaves me a little cold. The performances are superb, but unspontaneous. Another difficulty is with the orchestrations. In most cases on this album I think the flute just doesn't work. A case in point is Lover's Waltz, which is near perfect in the original Ungar/Mason version. Galway's flute just doesn't exude the same warmth. Another disappointment is Heart of the Heartland, which could have been an interesting conversation between Galway's flute and Ostroushko's mandolin. Instead we get another showcase for Galway with Ostroushko relegated to backup musician--what a shame! The only track I think that works well on this album is The West Texas Waltz, where we get a taste of how a really collaborative album might have sounded. I guess this album makes good easy listening, but it is certainly not the engaging album I would have expected of these folks.
After a year or two of owning this album, I have to say that the performances are even more stale that when I first reviewed it. I wish they'd let me take a star back.
Good for folks who like "easy listening". I like musicians who aren't afraid to challenge each other and themselves. This album had that potential, but falls flat.........
Very Compelling Classy Classical Appalachian.......2003-02-08
I get home from a hard day at the office and put on my headphones and am transported to heaven. If I had only two hours left of life on earth, I would want to listen to this album for one of them and we won't discuss the other hour please! Galway, Ungar, and Mason are superb. My wife and I were already of fan of Galway. Garrison Keillor's recommendation of "Waltzing with You" by Ungar and Mason (Sony) turned me on to Jay and Molly. Then on to "The Lover's Waltz" and "Harvest Home". The subtle blending and play between Galway's Flute, Jay's Fiddle, and Molly's Guitar . . . . God, there is nothing like it. If you buy this CD and don't like, I'll buy it off you and give it to a friend! ... Thanks Sir James, Jay and Molly.
Is it the music or the musicians?.......2002-12-07
During the many times I have listened to this album, I have posed myself the same question: is it the music I like best or the musicians that perform it? The music is compellingly rich for sure, music that makes the home a resonant place to live in the same way that a dancing wood fire speaks to the eyes of the soul. But the music sings with a penetrating warmth because of the seasoned artistry of the musicians who perform it. I have to give the tilt to the musicians who will forever haunt me with the flickering flames of their performance.
A National Treasure.......2002-10-20
This meeting of musical minds was a stroke of creative matchmaking by RCA. James Galway, the renowned flutist blends but does not blur with two of American folk music's more deeply rooted musical thinkers -- Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. Right from the start, "My Cape Breton Home," the art and craftsmanship, the painstaking selection and arrangement is evident. And this CD continues to delight the mind with an hour of the most beautiful music. All tunes, whether old favorites, like Stephen Foster's "Gentle Annie," or new and original, like "West Texas Waltz" by Jay Ungar, come together as naturally as the confluence of many streams. It seems as if you know these songs so well, which in my case is surprising, but perhaps not so surprising from a CD with Jay Ungar on it, composer of the evocative song for all time, "Ashokan Farewell." This piece has become a de facto theme for millions of people who heard it played again and again in the Ken Burns documentary on The Civil War.
The instrumentation, as you might expect, is the main feature of the CD. Flute, fiddle, piano, mandolin, guitar. But at what seems to be exactly the right time, Molly Mason and Ruth Ungar (Jay's daughter) voices sing out in harmony. And there is a deep understanding of the music here too, and therefore, much beauty in the sound. The rendering of "Pretty Saro" could stand alone as a classic, but when you hear it in order and against the background meticulously prepared by these musicians, it has a presence that is truly haunting.
I think anyone with a taste for the roots of American folk music will enjoy this CD. It has deepened my appreciation of the folk music of America and even the rural environment where I live in America. The art and craft are impeccable. "A Song of Home" is from beginning to end, thoroughly enjoyable, much to think about, a heritage to keep.

Album Description
This CD is the second of the final CDs to be issued by The Dale Warland Singers, who disbanded in 2004. The program is a "harvest" of popular songs, hymns and spirituals, including "Simple Gifts," "Deep River," and "We Gather Together". The Grammy-nominated Dale Warland Singers were specialists in performing American works. Includes 16-page booklet with full texts and notes on the works! The Dale Warland Singers CDs are among the best selling American choral CDs in recent history. This CD is a "volume 2" of their best seller, Blue Wheat, issued previously on ACC. Based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, the Dale Warland Singers were recognized as one of the world's foremost a cappella choral ensembles. This 40-voice professional choir recently celebrated its 31st and final season of concerts, tours, radio broadcasts, and critically acclaimed recordings, following the retirement of founder and director Dale Warland.
Customer Reviews:
"Harvest Home" Serves Up a Feast.......2006-03-10
Most CD recordings of choral music do not attract the attention of the population at large, and "Harvest Home" is clearly an exception. Word came to me about this remarkable album through a fellow faculty member at the Boston Conservatory. He was rightly proud of having written two of the arrangements, but prouder still of the fact that it had become a red-hot bestseller through the word-of-mouth network of choristers all over the country. Needless to say, I was curious but a bit skeptical. Generally, things that become that popular have an aesthetic downside. I ordered my copy from Amazon and got it just before I left to go to a concert with a couple of musician friends. We were frankly thrilled with the quality of the singing, the beautifully shaped nuances, and the richness of the several of the arrangements. It is clear that its popularity among choral singers has to do with the musical material, as with its execution. The arrangements are based on mostly religious American folk songs and show off the delicate intonational skills of Dale Warland's legendary group. It's just the kind of thing that church choir members can really appreciate, but unfortunately cannot stand up to repeated listing -- it has to be the work of great composers for me to hear recordings over and over again. Nevertheless, I played it for my choral group, and they jumped all over it. That's the market audience. Bravo, Mr. Warland.
Amazing.......2005-12-26
I've been a fan of the Dale Warland Singers for a long time, and attended many of their concerts. This recording displays perfectly what the choir was capable of. I listen to it constantly. Many of these arrangements are the best I've heard of these songs. "Deep River" is better than that of Chanticleer or Cantus. "She'll be Comin Round the Mountain" is really fun. I got the chance to sing it a few years ago and will never forget it. You NEED to buy this CD. It's well worth the money.
Exquisite.......2005-12-18
Buy this album! This is the finest recording I have purchased this year. The exquisite tonality and the arrangements have kept me listening every day. The audio quality is outstanding - balanced, finely nuanced, lovely soundstage. If you enjoy choral music, purchase this album - NOW.
Exquisite.......2005-11-16
I purchased this on a whim and it is been in my 5-disc player ever since. I have always loved choral settings of folk songs and hymns (with one exception - "The Water is Wide" should never ever ever be sung by a chorus - it doesn't work, but it is the only track I skip on this disc). The selections are all old favorites in often harmonically lush arrangements. Hawley's arrangement of "Not One Sparrow" is transcendent and has become my morning prayer, "Lay Me Low" my evening meditation. The singing is as near perfect as can be, musicality is stunning, and technical merits are high. I cannot recommend this disc enough.
Emotional and poignant.......2005-11-07
On Harvest Home, the Dale Warland Singers delve into the rich legacy of mostly American sacred and folk music. With the lush vocal orchestrations and thoughtful arrangements, many of these familiar songs take on new life and emotional depth.
As a boy, I grew up in the Mennonite church tradition and one of the distinctive things about our church services was the a cappella 4-part harmony. As I got older, I thought this was a bit odd and wished we used instruments in church like most people. In looking back now, I am thankful for that tradition and what it taught me about music and harmony.
Throughout high school I was involved with choral groups, doing several programs each year. The first year after high school I spent a few months at a religious school that had a long-standing tradition of chorale music. I well remember the hours of rehearsal to get the song just right, practicing enunciation and dynamics and expression.
So when I hear a group like the Dale Warland Singers, I have a small insight into the dedication it takes to do choral music at the level of this recording. These are singers and a director at the top of their game, with attention to detail everywhere, creativity in the arrangements and technical brilliance. And what a vocal range, with "how low can they go" bass and sopranos that my normal laptop headphones have trouble reproducing without distortion.
I've long been a fan of spirituals; they are at times moving to hear, at times playful and fun (and can be even more fun to sing). This album features a couple of my favorites: "Shall We Gather At The River" and "Deep River". Upon first hearing this rendition of the latter, I was nearly moved to tears by the stark beauty and emotional depth of this arrangement. It's a prime example of the power of music to take us places emotionally and connect us with the deeper feelings and longings of the soul.
In addition to several spirituals, there is a unique variety of other religious pieces pulled from the traditions of Quakers and Baptists among others. The album also mines some rich treasures from the Shaker tradition, including the comforting "Not One Sparrow Is Forgotten" and the poignant tenderness of "Lay Me Low', with the simple text of
Lay me low where the Lord can find me, where the Lord can own me, where the Lord can bless me
Not everything leans towards the serious or sacred though. A fun, light-hearted arrangement of "She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain" (arr. by Emma Lou Diemer) features bouncing bass lines and lots of syncopation and sibilance to keep things interesting. And the traditional Dixie folk song "Cindy" tells the story of a heartsick man with tongue-in-cheek lyrics that playfully bounce from part to part.
The liner notes are exceptional, with lots of helpful historic and musical notes on the various selections. This is one of the final albums from The Dale Warland Singers after 31 years. The group disbanded in May 2004 so that the founder Dale Warland could focus more on teaching, consulting and guest conducting. He certainly has left his mark on the choral landscape and this recording is no exception. Highly recommended if you appreciate choral music, especially traditional folk and sacred selections.

The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie Gerber

Music and the Great War.......2007-05-14
This is a fascinating compendium of popular and classical music from the World War One period. It evokes all the turmoil, anguish, and also humor, of the age, and is a vital CD to own if you have an interest in the Great War and the music it inspired or was inspired by.
How a Century Has Change Our Perception of War.......2005-10-29
War. Tough subject these days - tough subject since the beginning of time. Yet Americans tend to mend wounds and gradually allow the atrocities of yesteryear to fade into coated cases that signal more memories of 'how things used to be' rather than learning from the tragedies with which war has scarred the planet. National Public Radio issued this excellent memoir at the turn of the millennium and one wonders if it now has the same response that greeted it in 1999.
Linda Kobler reconstituted this mix of classical and popular music with a keen sense of history. The CD is twice divided (in both the classical and the popular music) into 'Before the War' 1901 - 1917, 'During the War' 1917 - 1922, and 'After the War' 1922 - 1928. In the first era are the works of Elgar ('Pomp and Circumstance'), Strauss (a waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier'), Mahler (excerpt from 'Das Lied von der Erde'), and Debussy ('La Mer') joining the songs 'Shine On Harvest Moon' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. The War period is represented by Prokofiev's 'Symphony No. 1', Stravinsky's 'L'histoire du soldat', and Ravel's 'Le tombeau de Couperin' in tandem with 'Over There'. After the war include Stravinsky ('Pulcinella Suite'), Schoenberg (Waltz from 'Five Piano Pieces'), Berg (excerpt from 'Wozzeck') and Copland ('Music from the Theatre') with popular songs 'How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm', 'The Man I Love', and 'West End Blues'.
The excerpts selected for this survey are exceptionally good: orchestras include NY Phil, LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony under such batons a Ormandy, Bernstein, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Schippers and Stravinsky; soloists include Glen Gould, Robert Casadesus, Lili Chookaskian, Louis Armstrong, et al. The sonics are very fine and the performances are each from significant full recordings remaining in the catalogue.
The booklet accompanying this concert of memories is written by Linda Kobler who uses each selection as a pivotal point in the atmosphere of the globe that accompanied the Great War: it is very well written and informative. This is one of those recorded collections that goes far beyond an accumulation of bits and pieces and instead gives food for thought about how our political and social actions intertwine with the arts in a prophetic way. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05
Excellent Recording!.......1999-03-13
(It was called The "Great" War, because nobody knew about WWII at the time and it was the biggest war anyone had ever seen.)
I think this CD may be a bit choppy to "easy" listeners, but for anyone who has a sincere interest in delving into the musical senses of earlier generations it's VERY good! I recommend the entire NPR Milestones of the Millennium series to such aficionados.
Good music, bad title.......1999-02-11
Since when is war great? Life in the trenches waiting for the germans to attack you worrying about whether mustard gas is gonna loft your way isn't exactly like sipping chablis.
