5 out of 5 stars a flawless soundtrack.......2000-10-11

This CD is a lot of fun. It brings back many memories of growing up. If you like to reminisce about the good ol' days, you should definitley check this soundtrack out. Good flick-great disk.

5 out of 5 stars its all that.......2000-10-03

This soundtrack is soon to be a classic. All the old favorites are here-Taylor Dayne, Boy George, Cher, Elton and more. Patti LaBelle is the queen! The name game is fun to listen to with friends, trying to sing along. This CD is great fun!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Flawless.......2000-10-03

This is a great soundtrack! There's not enough Boy George around these days, and I can't get enough of Elton John. I love those divas Taylor Dayne, Cher, Patti Labelle and Geri Halliwell. Drama Kidz do a great job as does Jellybean on making songs that are truley enjoyable. Recapture the feeling of the "Flawless" movie for yourself with this great soundtrack. Do yourself a favor and order it here today.

1 out of 5 stars FLAWED.......2000-09-18

This had a mediocre mix. I would have given this 2 stars, but Shirley Ellis' idiotic "Name Game" cost this cd a star. I have hated "the name game" since I was three and find it sheer torture. It is idiotic, unpleasant, highly irritating and has nothing in the world to recommend it. I would rather hear the train whistle and construction trucks than the "Name Game." I wouldn't wish Shirley Ellis on anyone.

3 out of 5 stars almost flawless.......2000-04-17

This is a really good soundtrack. Planet Love by Taylor Dayne is excellent. When the Money's Gone, G.A.Y., Can't Stop Love, all deserve to be classice dance floor stompers. My only complaint is the rest of the songs are simply soundtrack fodder. Worth getting for the tracks listed. Definately worth the money if you are into club music. P.S. Half Breed is not a remix, it is the classic version. I was very disapointed Amazaon had it listed as a remix

      Style and Sound

An organic blend of Pop, Rock, Jazz and Classical elements with the occasional Country twang. Flawless vocals, feel-good vibe and groove, intricate vocal harmonies, ... and an acoustic upright Bass all the way...

      Influences

Lauren Gifford's music is influenced by today's alternative culture and at the same time by James Taylor, Paul Simon and Dave Brubeck - and a touch of Billy Holliday

      Comparison

John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan (voice), Fiona Apple (vocal talent), James Taylor and Paul Simon (songwriting), Ani DiFranco (diversity), Dave Brubeck (piano)

      The Songs

      1) Sitting Pretty - Ogden Nash inspired lyrics over a seductive, SRV-guitar-driven acoustic Hip-Hop groove

      2) Sleepwalker - A Monday morning wake-up call with sensational vocal harmonies

      3) Together - Ancient Italian romanticism with emotional overdrive ... and then there is THAT guitar solo...

      4) Never Look Back - Light-hearted swing playing off a reflective mood

      5) April - Sticky Texas heat dripping from a slow moving Honky Tonk ballad

      6) Temptation - Playful Piano extravaganza (instrumental)

I have seen her live (traveled from Boston to Dallas to see if she really had it) - simply amazing! The CD is even better. Norah Jones and Diana Krall have some stiff competition.

      5 out of 5 stars Soothing.......2004-02-11

Laurens music is very soothing yet seductive in its own way. Her style is full of JAZZ and a crisp refreshing sound. This is a cd I was glad to have received straight from the singer herself. The price of her CD is well under its value and is worth listening to over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Give this girl a Grammy.......2004-02-05

Lauren Gifford is the most talented new artist. I am completely enamoured with her ability. She is a breath of fresh air. She has the most beautiful voice. She should get a Grammy for best new artist.

5 out of 5 stars Heard it, Loved it.......2004-02-04

I heard this artist on the Russ Martin Show. He has been playing her music and after hearing it I'm going to buy her album right now. Her music is well written, artful and real. It doesn't sound like an effort to be famous (although her music is good enough to warrant that) but rather an effort to really let loose emotion and energy. Also, from the interview, I've learned she often plays her own backup instruments and sings her own backup tracks. It is mind boggling how she could do this and still sound so angelic. Can't wait for mine to get here in the mail.

          Album Description

Everyday Is Distortion is the latest effort from hard electronic artist Christ Analogue. Inspired heavily by events endured in New York over the past 5 years, Everyday Is Distortion takes a diagnostic and critical look at the world around us. The vocals illustrate an unmistakable human passion that can never quite escape the electronic structures that consume them. Musically, Everyday Is Distortion boasts a sound arsenal of filtered percussion and intricate arpeggiations designed from the ground up and sequenced together with mathmatical precision. Creative use of organic instruments establish a cohesive balance throughout this 16 song album.

          1 out of 5 stars Flawed mixes.......2007-07-13

Hmmm, after a couple of listens I'm definitely disappointed, the 4 remixes don't thump at all, they're pretty tinny sounding to me, was expecting more thump for the money. The original version has more thump and bass than these mixes. Anyone want my copy, FREE?!?!?

4 out of 5 stars Almost Five Stars.......2004-09-06

Great music. Awesome beats. Almost Flawless.

The "single" contains the album version of Flawless, and four remixes. I was pleasantly surprised that each subsequent remix out performed the preceding mixes. My favorite is the 4th Boxer Mix with its thumping beats. It's a worthy addition to your CD library, but it looses a star for being expensive--five similar songs for over $12 is a bit much.

4 out of 5 stars George Has the Talent.......2004-07-29

Very good remixes. Would sound great in the club. George needs more exposure, but that's not his fault.

          5 out of 5 stars A sweet XTC-summer..........2004-06-30

I can really recommend buying the Flawless Mixes. Especially the Jack'N'Rory Vocal Mix and the Shapeshifters Remix are really outstanding.

Must say i'm quite impressed. Most remixes tend to be a travesty of the radio-edit but this... Well... Just listen to it! If this isn't hitting it of in the clubs...

Hope this review will be helpful.

          Album Description

America began forging its own cultural identity in the 19th Century with music reflecting a vast array of cultures coming together. By the time the first music conservatory opened in 1865, European classical music had begun to be mingled with music influenced by Native American themes, African-American styles of ragtime and spirituals, Latin American and rural American folk music, and the traditional military band. With Vintage America, Calico Winds showcases these American musical roots. Known for exploring the full palette of tone colors available to the wind quintet, Calico Winds plays "in perfect balance with each other, each [member] contributing lovely tone quality and flawless intonation…" (The Times Herald, Olean, NY) It is with these attributes that Calico Winds brings to life America's rich musical legacy.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Saucy, Melodic, Old-Fashioned American Wind Quintet Music.......2004-09-13

[Disclaimer: I'm a pushover for wind quintet music. There is something about the uneasy combination of timbres that unfailingly engages my interest and admiration.]

I found myself having trouble getting beyond the first band on this delightful release from Albany Records featuring the playing of a Los Angeles-based wind quintet calling themselves 'Calico Winds.' I kept pushing the repeat button to hear it one more time. It's that rhythmically invigorating and melodic. The music presented here is almost all by Americans, some from among those first conservatory-trained American composers of the 19th-century: William Mason, his nephew Daniel Gregory Mason, and Edward MacDowell. The more recent composers tend to write in conservative style so that the most recent work, 'Sea Sketches' by the only non-American, Briton David B. Chadwick, could be mistaken for something by an early twentieth-century writer. Some of the pieces are skillful transcriptions for quintet: Mason's 'Dance Antique,' that infectious first band I'd mentioned; MacDowell's 'Fireside Tales,' William Grant Still's folk-song based 'Miniatures' and 'Folk Suite,' Scott Joplin's 'Two Rags' ('The Cascades' and 'Maple Leaf Rag'), and the rousing closer, Sousa's 'The Stars and Stripes Forever.' Indeed, the only works originally written for wind quintet are Daniel Gregory Mason's 'Divertimento,' Arthur Farwell's brief and delightful 'Prairie Miniature,' and Chadwick's 'Sea Sketches.' That latter, by the way, has a catchy setting of 'The Sailors' Hornpipe,' another piece I couldn't get enough of.

Calico Winds consists of five women: Eileen Holt Helwig, flute and piccolo; Rong-Huey Liu, oboe and English horn; Rachel Berry, horn; Kathryn Nevin, clarinet; and Theresa Treuenfels, bassoon. I'd never heard of this expert and musicianly group before, although I gather they have made at least one prior recording on the humorously named 'Occasionally Sober' label and containing music from Bach to Zappa. I expect we'll be hearing from them again, if we're lucky.

This is not profound music. This is joyful music. It's worth hearing, and more important, worth coming to love. A real keeper, this.

          Album Description

El's recordings of guitar instrumentals have been acclaimed as “stirring” and “unbridled acoustic beauty” (Guitar Player Magazine), and as “treasures” (Dirty Linen). El's new CD-his 7th- “The Lea Rig”, has been a “lifetime in the making”. It sets a new standard for acoustic guitar. For the first time, El records with other great musicians, including, on various tracks, guitarist Larry Pattis, fiddler Kate MacLeod, whistle-player Bob Pegritz and Steve Black, on harmonica. From Celtic tunes, to stunning versions of pop classics, like “Stop, in the Name of Love”, “Here Comes the Sun” and Springsteen's “Sad Eyes”, to a soulful vocal rendering of the song “West Virginia Moon”, this CD covers a range of music perhaps never before rendered by a fingerstyle guitarist!

5 out of 5 stars El McMeen Breaks New Ground.......2002-05-25

Fans of guitarist El McMeen will find his new CD, The Lea Rig, to be both familiar and groundbreaking at the same time. Familiar elements include El's exclusive use of his trademark tuning (low C), a selection of tunes by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan, a hymn tune treatment, a couple of medleys, and a few pop tune arrangements. Where El breaks new ground is in joining forces with other musicians (a whistle player, a fiddler, and another guitarist) and in providing listeners with a rare original composition and a warm and earthy vocal performance.

I must confess that when I saw the words "and friends" on the CD cover, I braced myself for possible disappointment. Too often, when soloists-even great ones-turn to ensemble work, the results can be less than satisfying. As if overcompensating for the needs the group, otherwise brilliant soloists sometimes manage to turn out bland ensemble arrangements that in the worst cases deteriorate into New Age mush.

This is not the case here. El's work on this CD with fellow guitarist and touring partner Larry Pattis, whistle player Bob Pegritz, songwriter and fiddler Kate MacLeod, and composer and harmonica player Steve Black is first rate. Each arrangement is meticulously worked out (no mindless chord strumming here) and each is executed as a true collaboration that clearly highlights the unique talents of each artist. In fact, in the best of these pieces, each part, if listened to separately, could stand up as a superb solo performance.

Ensemble highlights include "The Shearing's Not for You/Bogie's Bonny Belle", where whistle and fiddle combine with El's guitar to produce a beautiful chamber music effect supported by lovely harmonies; the stately and measured pace of "Bridget Cruise, 3d Air"; and the plaintive harmonica work that perfectly complements El's vocal on "West Virginia Moon." Equally satisfying are El's duets with Larry Pattis ("Mo Giola Mar," and the beautiful "Ashokan Farewell.") Clearly El and Larry enjoy a kind of psychic link that gives them an uncanny ability to anticipate and follow through on each other's musical ideas. Never strained, their duets are complex harmonically and tightly knit structurally. An entire CD of El and Larry playing together is certainly on my wish list.

El's CDs always contain a generous sampling of O'Carolan tunes, and The Lea Rig is no exception. Executing these songs with the verve and skill we've come to expect from one who is among the foremost O'Carolan interpreters, El turns in virtuoso solo performances of the extremely demanding "Carolan's Concerto," the exuberant "Carolan's Receipt/Morgan Magan," and the delicately beautiful "George Brabazon, 2d Air," which has something of the endearing and enduring quality of a baroque minuet.

As on previous CDs, El's pop tune arrangements transform the sometimes trite into the nearly always special. Here, Bruce Sprinsteen's "Sad Eyes," George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun," and the old Supremes hit and Motown anthem, "Stop in the Name of Love" provide variety and pleasant surprises as El's characteristic treatment takes these familiar melodies in new directions. With the latter piece, for example, El turns the Motown sound on its ear, delivering instead a relaxed and almost jazzy ballad.

El's original tune, "High Ground," makes one wonder why he doesn't do more composing. According to El's notes, the "eerie atmosphere of tension and release" that permeates James Brady's book about the Korean War ("The Coldest War") inspired this song. But one doesn't need that information to appreciate the shifting tempos and contrasting modes that El employs in creating a similar atmosphere with notes rather than words.

I've always liked El's hymn tune arrangements, and they, like the Carolan tunes, appear frequently on his previous CDs. He concludes this album with a hauntingly beautiful arrangement of "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent." Dark and brooding, the melody is stripped down to its essential elements and punctuated at crucial points by bell-like harmonics. Only about a minute and a half long, this arrangement is a jewel and a perfect close for the CD.

While El's CDs have been consistently high in quality, The Lea Rig stands out for its variety in ensemble playing and solo work. With this collection, El has challenged himself to achieve ever-higher standards. Having listened to him more than meet that challenge, I eagerly look forward to the arrival of his next CD.
