Product Description
There was a time when the Juice Crew were running things, and truly believed that nobody could compete with them. MC Shan embodied that belief, with his braggadocio rhymes and "battle anybody" attitude. Overflowing with confidence, Shan has been a well-rounded emcee since he first showed up on wax in 1985, coming correct whether he was story telling, free styling, or kicking some of the most impressive extended metaphors in Hip Hop history. Cold Chillin Records and Traffic Entertainment Group proudly present MC Shan s "Down By Law", available for the first time as a double disc set, including the original album, and a plethora of substantial bonus material, from artwork to audio. With all the songs being digitally re-mastered, and all the additional photography being supplied by the man who took the photos (George DuBose), this project has been thought out, done right and handled with care, and we hope you enjoy it.

WTF ??.......2007-05-25
Now a Re-Release? I just bought the original on ebay last fall for over $100 and now its gets re-released with a 2 CD packe with remixes for under $20, wtf? This is upsetting to me. But anyways, great album "Letf Me Lonely" is Classic!
Classic Golden Age Hip Hop from MC Shan.......2007-05-12
Shawn Moltke, a.k.a. MC Shan, was an aspiring hip-hop MC from New York City, who grew up in the now-infamous Queensbridge housing projects. Hooking up with cousin Marlon Williams (a.k.a. DJ Marley Marl), they produced a string of singles for the indie Prism label which led to a recording contract for a full album from Cold Chillin'/Warner Bros. Records. The results are contained here in Shan's first full-length LP, "Down By Law". Needless to say, Shan was affiliated with the loose-knit rap collective The Juice Crew, and his aggressive style brought him into conflict with the rap group Boogie Down Productions, who quickly became the Bronx-based regional rivals to the Queens-centric Juice Crew.
The new Traffic archival release, "Down By Law" has all the early, pre-album singles by MC Shan, like "Jane, Stop this Crazy Thing", Left Me Lonely", "Kill that Noise", and the undisputed classic "The Bridge". The 2-disc set (30 cuts deep!) also includes an almost overwhelming amount of bonus material in the form of numerous 12"-inch/EP alternate takes, remixes, and rare recordings like radio freestyles and live-in-concert recordings.
Pros:
Marley Marl's production was pioneering in hip-hop, one of the first to make extensive use of the then-available sampling technology of such machines as the TR-808 and SP-1200. Drum, bass and horn licks from the likes of James Brown and more can be heard here for the "first" time. MC Shan is a capable rapper succeeding more as a storyteller, though he has capable freestyles and battle-raps. With his Queens allegiance, Kangol cap and pin-up good looks, he was kind of a lesser-known LL Cool J. Surprisingly, Shan lays his substance abuse issues bare with "Cocaine".
Cons:
The romantic sentiments of "Left Me Lonely" are short-circuited by the sexism of "Jane..." and "Project Ho" (both about women who can't give up a sex/drug fix). Given that Shan's follow-up albums, "Born to be Wild" and "Play it Again, Shan" failed to have the same commercial impact as his debut, "Down By Law" is virtually his defining artistic statement, especially when you consider the bonus material. Only MC Shan completists should look further.

groundbreaking.......2006-12-06
The emergence of conservative punk rock thinking in this album. Very individual and groundbreaking lyrics.
Songs like no equalizer, factory day etc. pure classics.
for the thinking punker.
great album, and its cheap too!.......2006-05-13
wow. first, this album rules. while epitaph records has really been disappointing me by discontinuing albums like this, i managed to get a sealed one for a mere 4 dollars. this music is really good pop-punk. i think the main misconception of pop-punk that folks get is from bands like green day and blink 182. these guys prove that pop-punk is a beautiful thing, when not abused by numbskulls. dave smalley reminds me of the guy who thought everything through before being brainless(green day and blink.) thi album smells purely of the sweet and fresh underground. i highly recommend!
Wow.......2004-04-10
I've had this record for 6 years now..and not a single song gets old. DBL at their best for sure. They have managed to set theirself apart from the bland, lackluster crap that's out there these days with each release...Like it or not it's true. Dave Smalley is your father! buy this!!!
i agree, it aint no bad religion, but it's up there.......1999-12-09
bad religion, probably the greatest punk band to ever play the genre. Down by law follows in a more heavy but identical lyrical standpoint. the last of the sharpshooters is just above your average run of the mill punk album. I reccomend No use for a name, garage fuzz, or the new bomb turks if you liked this.
Innovative, unique, and AWESOME.......1999-09-18
...are only a few words that you can describe Down By Law with. They are a metaphor for the flawless combination of rock and punk. "No Equalizer," and "Urban Napalm," really make statements about our world, and "Question Marks & Periods" has the best music I've heard from them yet!

An All Time Great.......2000-07-28
From the first time I heard this album I became an immediate DBL fan. If you like smart, sometimes funny, sometimes serious lyrics with great straight ahead rock melodies there are few if any albums better than this one. I can't recommend this album highly enough.
Great album, could be better.......1999-09-18
This really is an awesome album, and has some of their best songs ever, like "Bright Green Globe." The downside is the annoying, non-melodic voice on many of the tracks, like the voice in "Flower Tattoo." That doesn't sound like Smalley singing, and he really brings down the music quality. I liked 'Blue' and 'Last of the Sharpshooters' better.
Best Punk Album Ever.......1999-09-11
One of the best punk albums ever put together. This one had it all. Their other stuff was not as good, but this one blew me away.
IF YOU COULD ONLY HAVE 5CD'S MAKE THIS ONE OF 'EM.......1999-05-05
This is quite truly one of my favorite albums. The only reason I bought it was someone else made me listen to it. There other stuff might be poor, but they got there act together for this one.
Greatest all-around punk album ever made!.......1998-10-27
I'm not a huge Down By Law fan, but this is a awesome album. From melodic to hardcore to straight out punk this has it all. I think every true punk fan should have this album amoung his/her collection.

ISSUE RESOLVED ON THE EUPHRATES.......2005-06-19
One question I might find among the more difficult in my life would be - which is my favourite Handel oratorio? I suspect that my answer would generally be 'the one I heard most recently', and that, as I write this, is Belshazzar. It is a magnificent thing, a heavenly thing. It has taken me longer than it should have to come to an appreciation of what makes Handel the phenomenon - as a genius, as an artist, as a craftsman - that he is, but I am comforted to reflect that no less a genius than Haydn, at the age of nearly 70 gaining a more thorough knowledge of Handel in performance, was driven to say that he felt a mere apprentice. In his sense of how to pace a dramatic narrative, in his instinct for how to use the human voice in song and above all in chorus, in the matchless flexibility and adroitness he displays at word-setting and in the audacity of his melodic and harmonic effects I can think of nobody who can approach Handel on his own terms.
Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.
I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.
The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.
Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16
This 3CD set of George Frederic Handel's (1685-1759) "Belshazzar", from Archiv Production, a division of Universal Music, is proof again that transfer from vinyl to tape to disc brings with it improvements in listening that make the purchase a worthwhile addition to anyone's listening library. Written in 1744, "Belshazzar" is an oratorio in the operatic style that is wonderful oratorio, but lacking the true depth one expects to hear in an opera. London opera audiences of Handel's day agreed, as both "Belshazzar" and Handel's other offering of the period in the same style, "Hercules", were not terribly successful. Instead of the scheduled 24 performances only 16 were given and Handel never offered a full season of oratorio again. The Libretto by Charles Jennens (1700-1773) is, as the production notes say, meant "not only to show the fall of Babylon but to show it as a fulfillment of divine prediction and to confirm the biblical testimony by reference to classical history." There's only one problem, as good a quality as the CDs are, it is not possible to follow the full libretto and the accompanying booklet includes no text, which is a shame. I think the listening experience would have been increased immeasurably if one was able to follow the text of what is being sung. Nonetheless the dramatic narrative is fluid and even, and the English Concert and Choir provide nice balance to the less full vocal passages, as in Disc 3s "Oh Glorious prince", cut 10. There is enough of this throughout to keep one's interest, but disappointing if what one expects is another ""Messiah".

Down By Law - Puttin the boots in once again.......2003-05-30
Down By Law is back again with another fantastic album. Windwardtidesandwaywardsails is the best Down By Law album since Punkrockacademyfightsong. Maybe the one word run on is the way for this band to go with album titles. This album is inexpensive and well worth it. Fourteen tracks in 36 minutes or so makes you wanna listen to it over and over again. The entire album is good and "I wanna be in AC/DC" is a track that you will never forget. If your looking for the new N Sync album look somewhere else, but if your looking for some classic punk rock, this is the next album that you should put in your collection.

Shady.......2007-03-29
I'm not against the rapper using his name as DOWN but for amazon to offer a special deal if you purchase bustle in your hedgerow, which is a completely different genre, its pretty shady. It appears to be a scam by someone.
very deceiving.......2007-02-01
Gee I wonder why people are confusing this Rap album with a heavy metal band. Maybe cause it has the same name and practically the same logo? This version has initials instead of a real word, so I could see people mistaking it for the metal band, but when you (Amazon) offer a discount if you buy both CD's (Down II and this rap crap) that's misleading and is causing people to buy something they don't want. And since there's no way to contact Amazon, they can do what they want I guess
Firme CD.......2007-01-20
DOWN is a rapper from Oxnard that has decent lyrics and tight beats. This ain't that WEAK boring rocker sH*# that these other people are talking about. This is strictly for the G'z and bumping in lowriders. A lot of firme appearances from Westcoast legends too.
This is NOT DOWN from NOLA.......2006-08-01
These people are right and it is wrong that these people are making money selling a album with an Artist name of DOWN 8 years after the real band DOWN released their albums NOLA & DOWN II.
This is (c)RAP music and has nothing to do with the talented music that we have seen from the real DOWN in the past and soon to be future.
Amazon should not be associating this album with the real DOWN just because someone else chose to copy the name.
This is not Fu**ING Down.......2006-06-29
THIS IS NOT DOWN AND NEEDS TO BE OUT UNDER DOWN! ONLY ONE AND TURE DOWN! DOWN NOLA LIVE FU*KING ON!

Kids know nothing..........2004-04-13
It seems whatever is being pushed aside these days..I tend to embrace it. As with this record...I only had it recorded on a dollar tree tape and I played it until it broke. DBL are experimenting, yes...but if you liked Last of the sharpshooters...you'll like this one. It's a good album not as good as "last of the..." but a strong representation of a band who will make change for no one...if you believe in the music DBL has created for 15 years now, you won't turn your back.
a huge step backwards.......2003-01-12
I can't think of too many times I was more disappointed with an album. I like old Down By Law and have been a big Dave Smalley fan since his Dag Nasty days, but this release is practically unlistenable. Avoid it at all costs and don't buy into that "new mature sound" .... Trust me, it's complete garbage.
awful.......2001-11-02
this is one awful album, has absolutely nothing on it, silence is better believe me. they all sound like filler songs for a pop album. please avoid
Down by one star.......2000-03-27
Critics in the biz may have judged this effort by one of Califirnia's best punk bands as a mature step forward. I agree, Down By Law are trying differnt things and writing better songs while slowly decrusting their hardened sound. A mature thing to do I suppose. The results of this growth do not however make for better listening. A few tracks work while but too many do nothing for me.

punk fan.......1999-10-20
independence day, superman, ivory girl and radio ragga, are really cool songs but the rest of them sound the same. So this is a good cd but not great.
1 album to have if stranded on a desert island.......1999-01-05
Of all my cds, and I have a lot of them, this one is still my favorite of them all. Dave Smalley is the king of pop-punk. These songs don't really even fit the "pop" mold - they rock too hard! "Superman", "Cheap Thrill", "Independence Day", and "Post Office Lament" are pure punk rock classics. If I could only have 1 cd for the rest of my life, it would be this one. Buy it. Now!
how could you NOT like this?.......1998-06-27
this CD is great. i don't see how any punk fan couldn't like it. Dave Smalley kicks some major booty, with a great and always recognizable voice. the band is just FUN. *check out their "Last of the Sharpshooters" CD too.
