Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2007-05-21

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

4 out of 5 stars Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15

The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12

the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.

5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2007-03-31

Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

5 out of 5 stars Dropkick Classic Punk.......2007-05-01

Even if they'd never made another album, the Dropkick Murphys' reputation would be secure. Viewed through the prism of a decade since its release, "Do or Die" is a still great album.

Founded in 1996 by Mike McColgan (vocals) and his Boston area mates, Rick Barton (guitar and vocals), Ken Casey (bass and vocals), and Matt "Tough Sticks" Kelly (drums), the Dropkick Murphys played Celtic punk, merging the boys' Irish musical sensibilities with hardcore punk and rock (think Clash, AC/DC, and the Pogues). The resulting merge of poetry, heart, social awareness, and head stomping rock is both fiercely effective and affecting.

"Do or Die" (recorded in the fall of 1997, released January 1998) opens with bagpipes, an appropriate Cadence to Arms before we plunge into the title track; Do or Die is a rallying cry: "The once steel tough fabric of the union man was sold and bartered away; fed to money wolves in the Reagan years; caught adrift in greedy nineties' days..." Following on, Get Up is another rallying cry, this time to the kids of all those working class fathers whose jobs were pissed away: "We all fall down. So get up now!" These "punks" won't waste their lives.

Never Alone is a boisterous declaration of tribal affinity, as Bostonians, blue collar Irish Americans, street kids, punks. After the first four rockers, the fifth song, Caught in a Jar is a stunner. McColgan and Barton write, "Now there comes a day in every man's life where decisions have to be made: whether to toil, to labor, or just plain piss your days away, away, away..." The chorus sounds like a cheer, but it's really a harsh caution about drinking your earthly despair to more permanent damnation: "Got a funny feeling that my times are caught in a jar; madness and insanity have arrived; know to Christ and everyone else my times are caught in a jar; Satan's grin is bearing down on me."

Wow! After that dose of reality it's time for some musical lemonade of the foot stomping variety. Memories Remain serves the need well. Road of the Righteous also rocks, but describes a path most would rather not take: putting a plug in your head in the hope that the wife and kids will be able to pay a few bills post demise.

Next, the band really kicks you in the head. A soldier in the first Gulf War, McColgan writes and sings a lament that echoes from WW I to present day: "Here in the trenches the fist of the Beast, for fear of an atmosphere poisoned deceased, with a gas mask to keep me from breathing my death, it's American soil I hope for at best..."

The Dropkick Murphys rev up again though with one of their best rockers ever, Fightstarter Karaoke, Ken Casey and Rick Barton reminding everyone that back home we're all in this together, "It doesn't take a big man to knock somebody down, just a little courage to lift him off the ground!"

A portrait of the neighborhood's sad/tough drunk, likely one of many in Dropkick Murphy land and yours, Barroom Hero strikes home. The album then falls off for a couple songs, with 3rd Man In and Tenement Enemy #1 failing to catch ear or mind - until Finnegan's Wake roars the listener back to attention, Dropkick Murphy style.

Noble fondly recalls the boys' friend Rob Noble, "cut down in a brutal fight". The album ends with Boys on the Docks, a rousing Casey & Barton tribute to Boston's John Kelly, and Skinhead on the MBTA, an update of the classic "Charlie on the MTA" with suitable punk sensibility - this time it's a skinhead stuck on the train.

Altogether, "Do or Die" is a superb album, one that measures favorably with the genre's best, from producer/engineer Lars Frederickson's (Rancid) "And Out Come the Wolves", which preceded the Murphys' "Do or Die" by a couple years, to Social Distortion's "White Light, White Heat, White Trash" or Flogging Molly's "Drunken Lullabies". Big-time Clash fans, the Dropkick Murphys would also be glad to know they made Joe Strummer proud.

McColgan moved on after this studio debut to try his hand as a Boston firefighter before forming Street Dogs, while the Dropkick Murphys continued on in fine form with singer Al Barr (guitarist Rick Barton eventually left, too.) Both continue to put out top-notch punk. Pick up the Dropkick Murphys' "The Gang's All Here" or "Sing Loud, Sing Proud"; also try Street Dogs' debut "Savin Hill" or 2006's "Fading American Dream".

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-03-30

The title says it all, Im so happy I bought it and I listen to it all the time :)

5 out of 5 stars DKM PDG.......2007-03-10

As a UK child of the 70s, punk was truly "my music", and I have always been well pleased to see punk enjoyed, albeit discreetly, by many American audiophiles. However, American bands struggle to stay true to the form and, at the risk of offending, I must say that I don't believe there are more than 3-4 genuinely good genuinely punk rock bands in the USA (and I'll shorten the list for you - the Ramones were never punks).

All that being said, the Dropkicks fall into the category of true punk bands, and while I didn't even run across this band until the late 90s, I can't get enough of their stuff, no matter who the lead singer is. As other reviewers here point out, they are anti-establishment without being nihilistic, they're blue collar, they write great anthems, and they are fast and raucous and pure fun! This album, while very early in their discography, is a definite high-water mark for the band, in my opinion, with almost every track a hit. Later albums have lots of great songs on them, but "Do or Die" will always be, for me, the definitive DKM album you share with UK critics of US punk, to showcase the very best of what American punks can do.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Another Rap-A-Lot Masterpiece.......2007-03-30

Rap-A-Lot has been putting out classic after classic in the 1990's, ranging from H-Town's Scarface, Bushwick Bill, Ganxta NIP, Devin The Dude, among countless others, to Cali's Mad CJ Mac and Poppa LQ, and to in the midwest, these guys and A-G-2-A-Ke. Picture This is Do Or Die's first album from 1996. Go Chi Town!!! The production is varied, but hot. The beats range from laid back G-Funk to rattling hardcore with loud whiny keyboard synths. These cats can rhyme fast too. I love the lac thump of the smoking Po Pimp with relentless flows by Do Or Die and Twista perfect for the sunny ride down the ave. "Paperchase" is another laidback rider anthem with a nice guitar riff ridden beat. Then, as for the had core tracks, you get "Kill Or Be Killed;" these guys drop dog eat dog sociology knowledge of the hood over a menacing beat with a Dr Dre influenced whiny synth. "Shut 'Em Down" and "Alpha and Omega" also represent the hardcore side of Do Or Die. "Money Flow" is a slick anthem with a Zapp "Computer Love" sample and an accompanying talk box. These guys are lovers and fighters all the same! This album is underratedand should be in anyone's collection. Support the Rap-A-Lot legacy! These guys helped put it down for Chicago with the help of a legendary label!!

3 out of 5 stars Strong yet slightly uneven debut (3.5/5).......2006-12-03

Do or Die's debut album "Picture This" is a very enjoyable but slightly inconsistent album. Released in 1996, Do or Die position themselves with a style somewhere between Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Three 6 Mafia, obviously drawing comparisons to both for their triple-tongue fast rap style, but they do have a good deal of originality being from Chicago. Through the album's eleven tracks, there are two songs that are absolute classics, a handful of other good songs, and some definite filler material. The trio of Belo Zero, AK-47, and Nard are all blessed with a quick tongue and good voice, and while they are all talented lyricists at some points the subject matter does get repetitive. The production is mostly handled by Traxster, a good producer who definitely lends some good beats to "Picture This." The production style consists of heavy, slow rolling bass, usually whiny synths and some other sort of instrumental. A lot of tracks are perfect riding, g-funk songs, but the production is lacking in some spots. Overall, I am impressed by Do or Die on "Picture This," which is an enjoyable album that I recommend.

The first song, "Alpha and Omega," has a good intro and some fast rapping over a high synth and good bass. It's a hard track and a good album opener. "Shut `Em Down" is pretty good, musically very similar to the first track, so it may be skip material for some. "Po Pimp" is the first of two classics on this album, an absolute banger. The beat is excellent, with upbeat bass and cymbals, and a dark kind of sound, perfect for the car. The chorus is excellent, and fellow quick-lipped Chi-Town rapper Twista makes a great appearance. "Kill or Be Killed" is pretty forgettable, but it is followed by the second classic, "Paperchase." It has the best beat on the album, laced with a droopy guitar and synths. The quartet (aided again by Twista) sings the chorus excellently, and the lyrics are encouraging and kind of sad, I just love this song. "Playa Like Me" has is a good song overall, the only thing I don't like about it is that if you listen, you'll notice that the chorus and most of the verses are lyrically almost identical to "Po Pimp"'s. "Promise" is a tough sounding track, but not too memorable, and "6 Million" is a little better, the singing on the chorus of the latter is really nice. "Search Warrant" tells some cool stories, and "Anotha One Dead and Gone" is a sad, mourning kind of song. "Money Flow" is standard gangsta-rap fare, but Twista saves it with another appearance.

"Picture This" is worth a purchase just for "Po Pimp" and "Paperchase," which are two simply awesome songs. While the album is inconsistent and plagued by some filler tracks, it is certainly a solid album. This is the first Do or Die album I have listened to in full, and it leaves me hungry for some more, better albums. Do or Die shows a lot of potential and I think they are capable of making a better album than "Picture This," which I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore, Pimp, Gangsta!!!.......2006-11-20

The classic debut release from DO OR DIE should please any fan of rap music. While everyone was listening to Bone Thugs, I was pumpin this shh... in the system. No disrespect to Bone's fans, but I honestly feel that these cats are a lot more talented in every way, shape, and form. I don't expect a lot of critics/reviewers to agree, but all should agree that this was a great record from start to finish! Peace

5 out of 5 stars Kodak Moment.......2005-11-18

Chicago freshmen, Do Or Die, debut album Picture This is a glimpse of the slow movement tracks with the rapid fire delivery that is accustom to Chi's other artists. Eight of the eleven tracks were produced by The Legendary Traxster which brought the best out of the trio. The beginning and the end or "Alpha And Omega" is a slow gangster groove to begin this LP off and sets the pace for the entire album. On "Shut 'Em Down", it if filled with high paced, intense highs to offset the slow tempo of the track for more dimension. To get a closer look of their lives they ask "...Do you wanna ride in the backseat of a Caddy and chop it up with Do Or Die?" on "Po Pimp" featuring Tung Twista & Johnny P. They take it back to the streets with gun slinging on "Kill Or Be Killed" featuring Psycho Drama. For a more commercial feel and keeping the same tempo as the rest, "Paperchase" featuring Tung Twista fits well with the formula as did "Money Flow" with the "Computer Love" sample. D.O.D. takes us back on a ride as they take a smoke on "Playa Like Me And You" featuring Johnny P. "Promise" is a tale of a point blank murder and how it's done. Speeding up only slightly on tempos, "6 Million" is only one example of a way to die. They also talk about a raid without a "Search Warrant" and how they got out of a jam. Belo, Nard and AK-47 have a good flow for your interest, especially if you're into Twista, Crucial Conflict, Psycho Drama and Triple Darkness. This album almost fail because of diversity, this is only rider music with slight variations. The whole ride of Picture This is in the backseat of the Cadillac.

3 out of 5 stars Headz or Tailz: you still lose with this album.......2007-06-20

After coming from a stunning classic Picture This(I still listen to it till this day), Do Or Die returns with Headz Or Tailz. Before the advent of this album Twista, Do Or Die and Crucial Conflict's peculiar beef with Bone Thug N Harmony reached a fever pitch when Bone dissed all of them in The Art Of War. You already know what's about to happen next. Do Or Die's second album sounds like it was rushed and There was a couple of hits as well as misses. The Good: Pimpology and Lil Sum Sum get rotation. Still Po Pimpin is Po Pimpin 2 and All In The Club which features Danny Boy and Johny P is a good club record. On the gangsta side, Gangsta S*** is cool and even though I like Bone, Do Or Die's Bustin Back is a standout track and is the best diss record out off all the diss records aimed at them. Scarface make his presence well felt on Who Am I and Dead Or Alive should have been the last song on this album. The Bad: Just Ballin is bland as hell and why they chose this song as their next single stumps me. Ultimate Showdown and Caine House are classified under skip material. The Ugly: Nobody's Home and Can I are pitiful songs for the ladies(Can I being the worst out of the two) and Choppin' Up That Paper is no better either. And to add insult to injury Bushwick Bill sounds exactly like Eazy E(RIP) on the outro Tailz! Bottom Line: Do Or Die's Headz Or Tailz is a sophomore jinx. They tried for a more commercial approach and ended up with an album that is a mixed bag in every way. But even as a sophomore jinx it's better than Get that Paper.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice sophomore effort.......2007-04-21

Do or Die's 1998 sophomore effort "Headz or Tailz" is the album that vaulted the trio from a unique underground group to, in my opinion, perhaps Chicago's premier rap act. While it is fairly similar in substance to their debut Picture This, this just shows improvement across the board, both lyrically and musically. The rappers Nard, Belo Zero, and AK-47 are much more interesting this time around, peppering their dark hood tales with personality and substance, while still maintaining a flaunty style. I like how they also make some soft, slow cuts on "Headz or Tailz," they are one of a few groups that can really pull off a convincing hip hop slow jam. Often times R&B singers such as Johnny P and 2Pac's favorite crooner Danny Ray collaborate on such tracks. There's a nice distribution of the dark, hard, quick-rhymed songs and the deeper slow songs. The production is again handled by the Legendary Traxter and others, lacing the tracks with some woozy g-funk and music fitting of Do or Die's unique sound. I feel like the trio also attempted to stop comparisons with fellow midwest rappers Bone Thugs-N-Harmony on this album, further establishing their own unique identity. Don't let this awful cover fool you--"Headz or Tailz" is a great album!

After a very nice intro, the album begins with the really good song "Just Ballin." This song has a dark, woozy sound to it and a good hook, and all three MCs kick nice verses. "Pimpology" is well produced as well, another solid cut. "Lil Sum Sum" is one of the most memorable songs, dark and menacing sounding. "Nobody's Home" is among my favorite songs on this album, one of the softer sounding ones. I like it because while it does speak to the ladies, Do or Die maintains a very pimped-out persona through it. The slow beat is excellent and Danny Ray and Johnny P both deliver a great hook. "Still Po Pimpin'," the sequel to the classic single off their debut, is decent but fails to catch the perfection and polish of "Po Pimp" despite the reunion of Johnny P and Twista on the track. I do not like "All in the Club," a generic and fluffy club song. My favorite song is defintely "Can I," a deep and inspiring slow jam featuring crooners Beyond Content. This is followed by the okay "Choppin Up That Paper" and average "Gangsta S..t." "Bustin' Back" is a diss track towards Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, with some tough production. "Ultimate Shutdown" showcases a rough, triple-tongue delivery from the rappers. "Who Am I" is a decent Scarface collaboration, in my opinion it doesn't fulfill the potential of such a high profile collabo. The upbeat and catchy "Caine House" is a highlight. "Under Surveillance" and "Dead or Alive" are both solid, especially the latter, rounding out the album with the Bushwick Bill-aided outro.

While it's not quite the classic album I feel Do or Die is capable of creating, "Headz or Tailz" is a fulfilling and enjoyable album, showcasing a great rap group in their prime. I highly recommend that fans of Rap-A-Lot and the midwest rap scene check it out, I feel that this album and Do or Die as a whole have been overlooked for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Headz or Tailz.......2006-11-20

While its arguable which is their best LP, this is their most chill as far as production goes. The lyricall skills showcased by all were smooth and very rhythmic. It would be a shame by not considering this as a chi-town classic and a classic rap record in general. I haven't met someone yet who doesn't hear this LP and say that its not tight. Highly Recommended! Peace!

5 out of 5 stars Even better than their debut.......2006-05-07

I feel that with "Headz Or Tailz", Do or Die made a huge improvement. "Picture This" (their debut) was a classic, no doubt, since it introduced the world to Do Or Die, and because of the big hits on the album "Po Pimp", "Playa like me and you" and "Money Flow". However, Headz or Tailz, which was released a couple of years later is a step forward for this group. They come out with much improved flows and even the production is better, and more up to date. I feel that with this album, Do Or Die got their own identity. People tend to compare them to Bone Thugs and Harmony, but this is a mistake, since Do Or Die have got a whole other style. Sometimes they rap fast, but on many songs (especially on the "pimp" songs) they slow it down, and come out with a laid-back, smooth and mellow delivery, which sounds nothing like Bone (by the way, song number 11 "Bustin Back" is a diss song to Bone, a reply to all those disses Bone threw agains Do Or Die on their 3rd album "The Art Of War").

I'd like to disagree with the ones who say that only the first half of the album (tracks 1-9, the pimp songs) are good, and that the second hald (tracks 10 - 17, the gangsta side) is dissapointing. That is NOT true. Of course that Do Or Die are at their best when they rapping over slower, mellower RnB types of beats, but saying they can't do gangsta rap is just nonsense. The second half is banging as well, the group tear those beats appart and they show they've got range, and that they are capable of being hard-core also - and that's very important for a rapper. You can't be too one-dimensional! People sometimes fail to realise that. Do Or Die are from the streets and that DO know their gangsta sh**, and it's evident on the streets tales told all throughout the album.
As usual with Rap A Lot albums, production is amazing, as The Legendary Traxter and Mr. Lee each produce 8 songs, and Mike Dean produces one. The beats fit Do Or Die's flow perfectly, and this is a classic album for sure. Probably this is the group's best album, continuing the huge success Rap A Lot had in 1998 (one of the label's best years ever).

    5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2006-03-04

This is a solid sophomore realse, that followed "Picture This," this cd has one of my all time favorite Do or Die songs "Lil Sum Sum," I love that song. Along with songs like "Still Po Pimpin" Featuring Twista. "Just Ballin" and "Pimpology" are bangerz too, "Bustin Back" is actually a diss to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, on the extent of that beef I really don't know. This is a good Do or Die cd for Do or Die fans, also good for any rap fan.

5 out of 5 stars Arleen Auger and Dalton Baldwin-Love Songs.......2007-01-29

A lovely collection -very varied. Arleen Auger has a beautiful voice and Baldwin's accompaniment is wonderful. The 3rd track, by Jayme Ovalle, is, as it says in the accompanying notes, bewitching, and is actually the reason I bought the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of experience.......2006-01-28

There isn't much I can add to the praise bestowed on this album by earlier reviewers. I do think though that a special poignancy is undeniable since Auger's voice, while still beautiful, clearly is not that of a young singer. Her maturity makes her interpretations of these love songs all the more touching. I've probably played this CD a dozen times through the years, far more than any other in my collection. It remains consistently and deeply satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Auger at her best.......2005-04-26

This is a disc that I recommend to my graduating seniors/graduate students who are pursuing a graduate degree or career options in Vocal Performance.
From the standpoint of technique, Auger is practically flawless---"harsh" is not a word I equate with Ms. Auger's singing. She and Dalton Baldwin are impeccable performers on this disc. All the material was wisely chosen and presented, including one of the slowest "O del mio amato ben's" and one of the slowest "Salley Gardens", indicative of the beautiful breath control this artist had. I have to take exception to one of the comments made by one reviewer, of the "lack of sesitivity to the music that most classical singers possess". This is plain ignorant. This reviewer clearly does not understand the great artistic endeavor that classical singers have to have with Song literature---only a non-singer could have said this. Our finest classical singers of memory have all been outstanding musicians. They also have texts to interpret in many languages. I, as a singer-performer-teacher take great umbrage at comments like this which serve only to degrade the richness of so much repertoire.
I too hated the untimely passing of this fabulous singer. She is one of four famous women singers who all died at the age of 53. I think this disc was recorded not to long before she passed away and does reflect her "goodbye" to her audience. However the disc will remain as timely as the repertoire in it.

    5 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure.......2003-11-04

This recording is possibly one of the best examples of beautiful singing one will ever find. The repertoire, the artfulness, the line and the sheer beauty of Miss Auger's voice is a rare find. I've just recently purchased another copy as I loaned mine to a friend who begged to keep it! One note on the cover - this new cover art seems to imply this CD is some light version of 1970's Montovani romance music. Nothing could be further from the truth. Though the previous jacket (a photo of Miss Auger on pale pink) did look dated, I hope the next pressing of this (& I'm sure they'll be many more to come!) will give this collection the class packaging it deserves. This is a collector's item. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, sensitive music.......2001-06-15

So first of all, ignore the cheesy cover art and album title. This is a beautiful collection of songs, beautifully performed. Since I concur with the other reviews that laud Auger's performance (though don't forget the accompanist Dalton Baldwin, who is also outstanding), I'll add only the comment that there is a certain melancholy surrounding a lot of the songs and performances that (a) I find haunting and appealing, and (b) you would never know simply from looking at the album.

The performance of "Why, No One to Love" is worth the price of admission alone.

4 out of 5 stars Great Reference CD!.......2006-01-09

This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume I, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs, such as Trumpet Voluntary, Vivaldi's Spring from the Four Seasons, Trumpet Tune and Canon, i.e. Pachelbel's Canon. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over with an organist, a string quartet, etc. I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting musical selections, but ..........2005-01-06

As the other reviewer noted, one doesn't have to be getting married to enjoy this CD...and the musical selections are certainly interesting, even eclectic. I have to wonder, however, who picked these out with what criteria since at least a couple of these melodies are not traditional wedding tunes. By this I mean the lovely arrangement of Michael Praetorius' "In Dulci Jubilo." In his home country of Germany, where I used to live until a couple of years ago, this is a Christmas carol, sung at Christmas Eve services throughout the land. The lyrics aren't especially suited to any sort of wedding, really. Unless you're marrying in December, I personally would steer clear of this song. And if the wedding's in June and you have European guests, don't be surprised if eyebrows are raised when this melody is played!

      4 out of 5 stars A Nice Wedding Compilation.......2001-07-24

This album provides you with some good reference materials on planning the music for your wedding. Many of us may sit around wondering what on earth "Tempo di Mineutto" is. Well, with this album you will wonder no more. This is a pretty good compilation of some wedding favorites set in order that they would appear in your ceremony (prelude, processional, ceremony and recessional). Even if you aren't planning a wedding, this album provides you with some really good classical music to relax by. At a good discount, this CD is a nice addition to any collection. I would recommend this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09

For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.
