Decent album, but oh-so unbelievably predictable. Shame of it is, I really like Matisyahu. But is the guy going to put out some new material someday? He's 27 years old, in (what should be) the prime of his career. You can only re-release the same thing so many times before people stop buying your schtick.

I really love Matisyahu's music; it makes me feel peaceful and wonderful. This concert is awesome. At times Matisyahu is jumping up and down and really giving his all as a pop star, at at other, precise moments he is quiet, almost introspective. It is these moments in which his performance really shines because you can see and feel his authenticity. Matisyahu is an amazing talent and he will open your eyes and heart to G-d.

Fortunately for me, I had pre-ordered this CD through Amazon. A CD like this could only be made in America... a true melting pot of a concept... music praising God/God's works & some covers sung to a (believable, not contrived) reggae beat, sung by a Hassidic Jew. Innovative is the least of the things I can say about this CD. Glad I got it.

Another reviewer said "The man has to study up on stage presence and performance. People pay money for a show, not to watch you stand there and sing the album." I would agree that Mati is no James Brown on stage, but I would add that to some degree that may be the most genuine part of his act. Mati represents a belief in humility before G-d. To make the G-d the focus and the message the focus is the whole point. For instance, when Mati is completely still with his hand over his eyes during "Warrior" while he recites the Shema, that deep sincerity, gives a power to his message that trumps fireworks at any Rolling Stones concert any day. As Solomon said, there is a time for everything and when the point for celebration in the music is right, Mati gets animated and I think, it's just the right amount for the message. It's not coming off as contrived, but heartfelt. That's the allure of his music for me, meaningful and sincere music that feeds from the most compelling pursuit a person can have, the search for G-d.

I've purchased entire CDs for one great song, here Mati has many great performances. Each, would have compelled me to make this purchase. I can't worry about one or two songs I'm not as fond of. I can hardly think of any album, from any artist without that.

What you get here is great new music and some different flavors of Mati's established songs. I have found that although the songs may be the same, across different performances, both studio and live, I have changed my mind about weather I enjoy a song depending on the performance/format. So I don't see the re-release of songs here as a detriment as much as just more flavors to choose from.

This package is marketed as a new CD with a bonus DVD. The CD has 7 remixes of 5 songs, 4 of which are better on Matisyahu's previous CDs. And right in the middle is the horrible Swisha House destruction of "Jerusalem". In other words, this CD is a dud when compared to the earlier releases. The 4 stars are all for the DVD. It includes a complete live concert in Tel Aviv, plus interviews and casual scenes of Matisyahu with his band and wife and baby son in Jerusalem. The music is great and the rest gives us an opportunity to get to know him a little. There is also an artfully done music video of "Jerusalem" which is a good antidote for the pain inflicted by the Swisha House mix. This package should have been marketed as a great DVD with a free remix CD, or the DVD could have been sold by itself for the same price.

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

Is music for a good cause a good cause for music? Not really, if you expect artistry. But this smorgasbord of popular international musical stars brings together extreme musical genres for an excellent purpose, and is enjoyable enough for almost anyone. Pavarotti's relaxed and buoyant leadership and still gorgeous tenor add beauty to the rock/pop selections. Trisha Yearwood, Celine Dion, and Stevie Wonder impressively hold their own against Opera Spice; but the other artists pale against the master's presence. The Spice Girls will never be confused with Anonymous 4; Zucchero's growling is scary; Florent Pagny exemplifies French rock; and Pino Daniele's breathy tenor is mellow and soothing. As a musician, I first ran into this disk as a PBS broadcast. What caught my ear was that every song in the concert has "the groove." Other than a children's choral cut, not a single song in the entire collection has a flaw. You'd think the Spice Girls would be a silly addition to the concert, but they do a tremendous job. Each artist appears twice, usually with Pavaotti in one of their songs, sometimes twice. Vanessa Williams is Hot! and does an incredible dance number. The engineering is excellent, with solid side-to-side separation for a really "big" sound. All in all, this is one of the favorite CDs in my music library.

We first saw Pavarotti and Friends on Public Television as a fundraising event. We found the CD and especially love to listen to this CD in our car which has a great sound system. Each vocalist is so special and you will be singing along with them after a couple of plays!

A most wonderful gathering of some of the world's greatest vocalists. Such a unique blend of international Modern & Classical. If one were to put to test the ability of a vocalist to adapt to a variety of melodies, this is it. Grab your lover and take a trip in their arms with this CD!!

Easily the best in the Pavarotti & Friends series. Always an artist on the cutting edge, with this album, Pavarotti's work will have great appeal to his fans and to scores of new enthusiasts. His duets with the Spice Girls, Vanessa Williams, Zucchero, and Stevie Wonder make it obvious that his voice has adaptability and a passion that takes it into many musical genres with ease. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Sting once commented that great music occurs in the "synaptic gaps" where many different styles come together - this is an album that epitomizes the concept. Neopolitan music is a folk music in Italy, with overtones of American folk/country/jazz/rock, and Pavarotti is the Neopolitan master. This is a perfect fit of artists and selected titles. Earlier combinations of artists in this series were often much too somber, much less fun. Give this one to your teens or your great grandmother ... they'll find they have more musical tastes in common than they'd have ever imagined.

    I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

It Is Not For Us To Know Why He was Called Home At The Penical Of His Career. His Music However Is Ours To Cherish For A Lifetime.     This cd was very smooth before Smooth Jazz became a definition for today's smoother sounds. Some of the sweeter sounds are "Jade's World, "Sweetest Taboo", "Spenser For Hire" from the television show of the same title. I vote for "Stanley's Groove" as the funkiet on this cd.

    Although Will has never made a bad album, "Love's The Place To Be" is my all-time favorite. The ultra-smooth and breathtakingly-beautiful title track is one of Will's most emotive ballads. By the same token, Will's liquid, velvet-smooth and rich baritone is at its best on the jazzy ballads "Sailing On A Dream", "That's All", "Do You Still Love Me?", "Lover's Paradise" and his superior remake of The Stylistics' ever-popular "Break Up To Make Up" make this CD a true musical treasure. If you are into real and heartfelt music then this CD is...indispensable.

    I, like the other reviewers have all of Will Downing's cd's. This one and Invitation Only are a tie for my all time favorite Will Downing cd's. There is not one throw away cut on this entire cd. There's No Living Without You sets the stage for the entire project. The title, "Love's The Place to Be" with Bob Baldwin on piano is indeed a treat. My all time favorite duet, Rachelle Ferrell and Will Downing on "Nothing Has Ever.." is indeed a classic as far as love songs go. His remake of "Break Up To Make Up" breathes new life into a song that I have always loved. Equally as impressive are "Hey Girl" and "That's All." The promises he sings about are heartfelt and it is a shame that he does not get the recognition he so richly deserves. This cd is on my top 10 list of all time favorite cd/albums. Include this project and you will be more than pleasantly surprised. He is one of the most romantic singers of our time.

    I purchased this CD in 1994. Will Downing is wonderful. I own all of his CDs and I love them all, espeically this one and Moods. He is such a talented artist. The songs Nothing Has Ever Felt featuring Rachelle Ferrell, Love's The Place To Be, Lover's Paradise, Break Up To Make Up and especially Hey Girl are my favorites on this CD. Buy It, it's definitely worth the purchase.

    The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

    Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

    This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

    5 out of 5 stars You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

    What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

    The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

    This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

    I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

    And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

    The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

    The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

    A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

    What else can I say that hasn't been said about this brother? Truly anointed and I can't wait until his next offering. A talent like his should be recorded over and over and it is disturbing that he only has two CDs. He sings with a simplicity and honesty that touches me deeply and my eleven year old loves his music also ++++. All of the songs on this offering are beautiful and sincere.

    I had the honor of ministering in song with Neville two weeks ago and that experience changed my life. I was blessed to receive a complimentary copy of his CD.     I heard one track from this album played on the radio and bought the CD. IT IS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. I cannot find the words to express how excellent this CD is. If anyone out there knows of other CD's both Mr. Peter, I would be happy to find out. Every song on this CD is just breath-taking, and spiritual. Congratulations to a very talented brother.
