As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Whether Tom Cruise's portrayal of a 19th century American soldier cum samurai warrior will be remembered with the same pangs of pop-cultural bemusement that befell John Wayne playing Genghis Khan remains to be seen. But its musical soundtrack does mark an auspicious occasion: pop musician-turned-composer Hans Zimmer's 100th score since beginning his film career in 1988. A pioneer of fusing both the electronic and orchestral and the Westernized with the indigenous, Zimmer does both here with skill, drawing heavily on samples of the traditional Taiko (a massive Japanese drum) for its rhythmic action sequences, while constructing a melodic Western motif for Cruise's character that's both centerpiece and counterpoint for the score's transcultural intent. Aside from the brief, ominous thunder of the expected action/suspense boilerplate, Zimmer has constructed passages of gentle, Asian-inflected pastoralism that have parallels with much of his evocative work on The Thin Red Line. Those cues are the score's very soul, a canvas against which his more traditional themes reverberate all the stronger. --Jerry McCulley

If you liked Dances With Wolves this is it in Japan - I do think it is Tom C's best movie. The sound track is excellent - Zimmer also did Batman Returns which has a fantastic soundtrack - Hans is comming on

I always love it when composers branch out and write music that you would never expect them to write, yet retaining their own trademark sound. Here, Hans Zimmer utilizes his own, recognizable sound, where you know it's him with eastern instrumentation, such as Taiko drums, the shakuhachi (a staple in Horner scores lately), and the koto harp. It's east meets west, a route in which Tan Dun took on in the film "Hero", and Zimmer's score follows many of those same musical ideas, only not quite as eastern sounding as Dun's score.
The main theme is a powerful 7-note anthem which tends to build its way up each time, as in "A Way of Life", "Spectres in the Fog", "Idyll's End", and "Safe Passage". You can tell it is a Zimmer theme just by its sound, but with the oriental flavor thrown in, it really adds to the mix.
The action music in the score is exciting with energetic Taiko drums keeping the pulse moving. They do not get tiresome, as you might think because Zimmer uses them more like a heartbeat, not a heart attack! "Red Warrior" is a powerful anthem, consisting of japanese warrior chants, which really add to the scope of the sound. Other noteworthy tracks are "Ronin" and "The Way of the Sword", which are enjoyable pieces of music.
I was pleased of the results of Zimmer's work here. It showcases Zimmer's diversity with his music. I hope he gets the opportunity to write more diverse scores such as this. The Da Vinci Code is certainly one of them!

This soundtrack is brilliant, and Hans Zimmer even more. He is truly one of the great film composers. The Last Samurai's sounds never fail to draw emotion from me.

"I may be hungry, but I sure ain't weird," Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart, famously intones on this bright-sounding remastered version of the 1967 debut by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. Safe as Milk is a bold, tough-ass distillation of Delta blues stomp and '60s garage-punk swagger, fused with a radically polyrhythmic and tempo-shifting style that one might term "art rock." Listening to the delightfully playful, absurdist "Abba Zabba," it's easy to see why Lester Bangs called Beefheart "the only true dadaist in rock"; the song is a good indication of the intricate, rule-breaking music the Magic Band would continue to hone. But there are also formidable ballads (the psychedelic "Autumn's Child," the lachrymose "I'm Glad"), midtempo pop-soul tunes (the Otis Redding-ish "Call on Me"), and straight-ahead blues-rock workouts ("Plastic Factory"), all of which showcase the fretwork of a young Ry Cooder. Much has been made of Beefheart's multiple-octave vocal range; he sings menacingly on "Dropout Boogie" and allegedly broke a very expensive microphone on the eerie "Electricity." The last seven tracks on this reissue (for the most part fascinating, unfinished instrumentals) were recorded with a different lineup; they are outtakes from Mirror Man Sessions. --Mike McGonigal

Captain Beefheart's debut is a glorious mess of fractured Delta Blues, lopsided garage rock, and mind-expanding pop, a wonderfully offbeat record that still sounds fantastically original today. Every song resonates with the kind of wonky creativity and out-of-whack musicality that makes some albums an utter joy to listen to. Indeed, Safe as Milk sounds dazzling and fantastic on the first play and only gets better with each additional listen (fun fact: for a while, this was John Lennon's favorite album). The Cap'n certainly has the appropriate raw materials: A wonderfully deranged approach to songwriting, a deep love of blues and rock, some neat harmonica skills, and, most importantly, a monstrous bellow of a voice that rings with both deep emotion and sly humor. The guy sounds like an avant-garde Howlin' Wolf, a ragged maverick with a set of pipes that can match the afformentioned Chicago Blues legend for sheer throat-shredding catharsis. And how about that band! The Magic Band may very well be one of the sturdiest and most universally capable groups ever assembled, able to play rock, blues, country, soul, or pop with equal aplomb, to seamlessly combine them, or to turn stylistic corners on a dime.

The songs are almost uniformly fantastic- "Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do" opens the record with a cheeky, affectionate slice of ramblin' country blues, picking up a galloping drumbeat on the way. "Plastic Factory" takes a different approach to the same genre, but its every bit as awesome: It boasts a mean, gritty guitar riff, some stuttering harmonicas, and one of Beefheart delivering some surreally bemused lyrics in a rough, hoarse bellow. "Zig-Zag Wanderer" and the acidic "Dropout Boogie" are rough, blistering garage rockers that could have sat quite comfortably on the Nuggets box. The latter, with its goonish backing vocals and razor-sharp fuzz guitar line, is particularly nasty. "Electricity," with its wailing guitars, acid-tinged melodies, pulverizing vocals, rabble-rousing chorus, and touches of psychotic psychedlia, is an all-out stunner, as is the primal percussion showcase that is "Abba Zaba." "Call on Me" and "I'm Glad" are fantastic soul songs- the latter is a genuinly affecting ballad with a deeply emotional vocal. "Where There's Woman" is quiet and tension-filled, with a creeping guitar line and echoes of percussion. Album closer "Autumn's Child" manages to sound like both earnest, otherworldly baroque-psychedlia and some of Frank Zappa's spacier numbers.

Put simply, Safe as Milk is an astounding album, an odd and engaging joy from start to finnish. You can play it from now until the day yoou die, and still find something to love each time you hear it. If you like music that's both original and accessible, you can't go wrong with this. Hey, if you listen to it enough, you may even be ready to experiance Trout Mask Replica! But that's another story...

Excelent disc. very singular because it combines notes of blues with classic rock mainly and the estridente sound of the first guitar. all it contributed to being a very singular sort. I am proud of this purchase.

Discovering beefheart thru his work with the great Frank Zappa I of course started with Trout Mask. Don't get me wrong that album is a great piece of avant garde music, however it is not easy to listen to. Safe as Milk is much more accessible, Beefheart's vocals are more rythmic, and the band is excellent. This is truely a hidden gem for people who like classic rock and are interested in something diffrent than radio heavy bands.

It was 1969, and I was a mere 13 years old when my Stoner older brother age 23 laid this one on me. One listen to this Orgy for the ears, and every other rock and roll album of the day just seemed to pail in comparison. I was that Jaded! After about 30th time around the ZENITH Record Player, I began to wonder, what makes this so addicting? That's easy, there's really nothing like it! So, again and again it plays... It's that addicting. Ok, pass the hash pipe! Hell, you don't even need drugs, beefheart's music is a very satisfying trip in itself. It's like the whole high desert opened up and belched a genuine boanfide masterpiece. From Yellow Brick Road to Electricity, this is pure gold. This is essentially Don's first Album. There's something so whimsically wonderful about every track. That's rare. Every song is like an abstract painting. Each cut is as riveting as the next. I know, many of these masterful tunes have a standard beat! Of course the Captain's later efforts are just as interesting and even more original. But, this is the record to get first. It opens the door and guides the listener into what follows. Don Van Vliet is a true original, an American Blues Genius. If the Devil Played this album in Hell, Baby it really would make you want to go!

This is Captain Beefhearts first album, and without a doubt I would have to say this is the most amazing debut from any artist I have ever heard. I purchased Trout Mask Replica before this and was mildly impressed with its excentric, strange compositions. On Safe as Milk the songs are, well, more song driven witch gives its experiments more structure, and allows the same amount of both wierdness and rhapsody to inhabit the same space. There is to much to say about this album, buy it for yourself and you will realize.

Although Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley dropped off the radar following 1995's Alice in Chains, it's amazing how good he sounds on 1998's "Get Born Again," the one new track on this 15-song best-of outing. Sounding like a Dirt-era offering, the band's trademark dirgeful sound and melodic, layered, and haunting vocals shine on this strong Staley-Cantrell composition. And there's other interesting material that makes Nothing Safe a safe bet for fans. A demo of "We Die Young" is faster and more metal than the version on 1990's Facelift, while a live "Rooster," lilting "Got Me Wrong" (from Unplugged) and "What Hell Have I" from the Last Action Hero soundtrack are all eminently listenable. --Katherine Turman

Like I said for Jar Of Flies, this is one of the best CDs of the genre.
Also like Unplugged for a little laid-back version of the songs... Also Unplugged is a nice way to (re-)introduce AIC to those that might have thought them too gritty or some such.

Alice In Chains was one of the most influential bands ever walked the face of the earth that many bands wanted to copy,
but unfortunately all of them failed. Nobody can imitate the power, pain, and passion of Layne Staley's heartfelt vocal
delivery. Hell, this guy can move mountains. One of my favourite vocalists of all time. While Jerry Cantrell, the Axeman
of the band, he can shred your face into bits and also delivers insane mind-blowing chaotic solos. He wrote most of the
songs played by the band and he also wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever written and that's Would? Together, Layne
Staley and Jerry Cantrell as everyone have said are the Best Duo of the 90's. Alice in Chains is not purely a Grunge band
like Nirvana and Pearl Jam but they're also a Hard Rock and a Metal band. They are darker than Nirvana and heavier
than Pearl Jam.

Now, unto the album, this is the first ever "Best Of" album released by the band and this one is much better
compared to the "Greatest Hit" album released a year after because it has all the tracks except "Heaven Beside You" with
this album.

Though I own all the Alice in Chains albums, this one is the one that rarely leaves my car stereo. Every song here is awe-inspiring. Starting things off with Get Born Again, one of my favorite AIC songs ever, this album takes you through so much emotion. I remember what a gift this band was back in the 90s when I was that awkward, angry kid in high school who needed someone who understood. There will never be another AIC, and this CD is testament to that. Do yourself a huge favor and pick this up. If it hits you the same way it does me, I guarantee you'll pick up the other AIC albums as well.

I'm not too much into grunge. I didn't really care for Pearl Jam and I only liked a few Nirvana songs. But Alice In Chains was diffrent from those bands. They were more darker and had way better solos. Jerry Cantrel is an amazing guitar player and probably the best one in grunge.Layne Staley also had an amazing voice. It's ashame that he's gone but may his spirit live on. This best of the box set has all of the famous Alice in Chains songs. Some of the best songs in my opinion are Man In The Box, Would, Them Bones, Rooster, and Down In A Hole. 17 songs all for anyone who likes Alice In Chains or maybe just a few songs.If your barley getting into this band than I start off with this collection album. Every song is original just like the band and that would never change.

While this CD was to be the first in the sadly--because it loomed that the end of Alice In Chains the band was nigh, and started the affronting malpractice of Sony to re-release and re-release the same Alice In Chains songs with subtly different varieties over the period of 1999 to 2001 (recall the "Greatest Hits", "Music Bank" and "Live" CDs--degradingly drawn-out process of the record company taking advantage of fans' missing of Alice In Chains during their inactivity by exploiting their catalog on different "compilation" CDs, Nothing Safe is inarguably the best of the illicit, invented-sequence Alice In Chains CDs, if only just barely. The merit of the CD--no matter if the rest of the songs are already owned by most dedicated Alice In Chains aficionados--is the grating, one, new song FINALLY distributed after three to four years of Alice In Chains' rueful hiatus, Get Born Again, a monster of an impression-making reemergence!!!! On the flip side, somewhat sorrowfully, Nothing Safe isn't defensible of a purchase because everyone who's interested enough in Alice In Chains to buy the CD based on Get Born Again will already possess most, if not all, older songs.

However, to the most fanatically loyal Alice In Chains connoisseurs--the only kind of Alice In Chains fan around--Nothing Safe merits worth by Get Born Again alone, their newest song since 1996's Unplugged, "Killer Is Me". Beginning morosely and dreadfully with Cantrell's crypt-like, tomb-beckoning, whistling hooks, like doom looms on the horizon, Get Born Again appears to be a song best suited for someone's funeral--yet it's SO much more!!!! Get Born Again immediately segues into a metal-ly, hard-shredding number from its first lines of the first verse. Grating and rumbling with Inez's bass, Cantrell's piercing splintering, and Kinney's hard-hitting drums, the song begins with Staley's trademark frightfulness of reciting eerie poetry for verses in a sing-song fashion, where it then launches into an explosion of riffing before rather unexpectedly and smoothly settling down into the chorus, where Staley's patently ghostly warble under a high pitch takes over, rhyming in arcane intonations (oooh...denied all...and tied all the lies).

Get Born Again has Staley's voice returning to its Dirt-like quality of range, pitch and strength, although its despairingly looming theme fits just as perfectly on Tripod's sludge!!!! Staley's voice is versatile here; in the quieter/restrained parts, his voice affects a correspondingly ominous feel of portending eeriness, sounding at times frail and non-vital, yet in the louder parts of full-throttle shredding, affects the same rigorous screams like on Dirt. The result is a vocal performance that sounds unholy and menaces of some future apocalypse to come. Cantrell, too, is up to par, delivering one of Alice In Chains' most memorable solos, a breathtaking yet harmoniously crypt-like solo that agonizes the listener with some kind of sorrowful overtone exorcized only by the sonic intoxication from the pure dominance of Cantrell's skills. For their second last, new song, Alice In Chains at least delivers a five-and-a-half-minute masterpiece of precious rarity. Get Born Again is quite feasibly read into being about Staley's drug-junkie girlfriend who overdosed in 1996, and from that macabre basis produces a hauntingly unearthly song recalling imagery about betrayal, loss, insecurity, yearning, charades, gloom, pessimism and finally redemption--in short, the usual, thoughtful introspection of Alice In Chains material!!!!

I'm compelled to subtract value from Nothing Safe because of the aforementioned, stagnant rehashing of Alice In Chains' songs, but if you're a newbie, Nothing Safe remains the best, introductory material. All the other hits, minus several more they could've easily incorporated, are familiar to longtime aficionados, like the fast-paced We Die Young, the quintessential Man in the Box, the spastic Them Bones, the regretful Down in a Hole, the powerhouse live Rooster, the searching Got Me Wrong, the atoning No Excuses, the purging I Stay Away, the aggressive What the Hell Have I, the chugging Grind, the thunderous Again, and the retrospective Would?.

This is a fairly short album by today's standards, but this album shows that today's standards are pretty crappy. "Miller's Cave" stands out in my mind the most.

i love country rock. i mean real country rock, not the pre-fab stuff that comes out of nashville these days. this album is the real stuff. in fact it's the first country rock album ever recorded and gram parsons at his absolute best. he only topped this effort once, with the great "the gilded palace of sin" (the flying burrito brothers first album ). the cd's only drawback is that it's 28 minutes long (which was not unusual for albums in the late 1960s). it was recorded in 1967. before his stint with the byrds, before the flying burrito brothers, before he went solo, before drugs and alcohol got the better of him. everything he did on "the gilded palace of sin" he pioneered here. it turns out gram parsons made a prototype of his later masterpiece. this cd is it. i can't get enough of it.

Gram Parsons has as legitimate claim as anyone for recording the first country/rock album with this late-1967 recording by the International Submarine Band before jumping ship to join the Byrds on their SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO project.

The standout tracks are the self-penned gems like "Blue Eyes" (which was released as a single), "Luxury Liner" (which Parsons devotee Emmylou Harris would cover a decade later), and "Do You Know How It Feels To Be Lonesome" (which Parsons would revisit on the Flying Burrito Brothers' debut).

There are equally strong performances on covers of Merle Haggard's "I Must Be Somebody Else You've Known" and Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone." The original album's nine tracks are augmented on this CD reissue by the bonus track "Knee Deep In the Blues" (a hit for both Marty Robbins and Guy Mitchell), which first appeared on the Gram Parsons anthology SACRED HEARTS & FALLEN ANGELS.

The band is joined on these recordings by Jay Dee Maness on pedal steel, Earl "Les" Ball on piano, and future Burrito Brother Chris Ethridge on bass. While the album is relatively short (it clocks in at just under 28 minutes), the pure, raw country sounds on this disc became the template for all country/rock bands that followed in their wake. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This soundtrack from the stunning film Latcho Drom is a first-class introduction to the story of Gypsy music and culture. Tracing a chronological 1,000-year-old path of Gypsy migration from Rajasthan to Spain, these 18 tracks contain a myriad of different styles from the Indian subcontinent, Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France, and the flamenco Gypsies of Barcelona. Many well-respected acts like Taraf de Haidouks and Hasam Yarim are featured as well as many unknown but extremely talented Gypsy artists. Having seen the film twice, I looked forward to listening to the CD. Well, it's marvellous. A wonderful range, arising from the spread of the Rom (my ancestors) from northern India to western Europe. There are times when your foot won't stop tapping. But the most moving piece is the old woman singing the lament about Auschwitz. It brings tears to my eyes every time.

Dispersed for reasons unknown from their original homeland believed by many to be Rajasthan (India), traveling unparalleled roads to the newly adopted homelands of Egypt, Turkey, the Balkans, and Central Europe, i.e., Romania and Hungary, the Romani have maintained their unique identity, heritage and cultural roots through their music. This CD manages to capture the diversity and unity of gypsy life through a wide variety of instruments, musical styles, and expressions: depicting the versatility and talents of this often misunderstood group of people. "Latcho Drom" was a most unusual film: a combination road film/documentary/music video that chronicled the journey of the Rom (Gypsies) from Rajathstan, India, to Egypt, Turkey, Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, France and Spain. The selections on the CD represent centuries of musical absorption from this melange of cultures. A fabulous collection of Rom music spanning different styles and genres, this is a CD to be treasured for its uniqueness, variety, spirit, and testament to the survival of the Rom. There is lively flamenco, French guitarists jamming as hard as Django, Arabic dance tunes, an Auschwitz lament, Indian music, and Romanian and Hungarian melodies tinged with the sadness of outcasts and the wearisome roads the Rom have travelled. Buy the soundtrack, but above all see the movie "Latcho Drom" for an experience unlike any other!

Because in some ways the movie Latcho Drom is the ultimate road film (roaming the world with the Rom people), a CD of the music to take with you wherever you go is the perfect complement to the film experience.

The music is clearly all live performance, spontaneous, and linked closely to the action of the film. For example, there is a haunting piece apparently performed in Romania where the violinist creates a unique sound by pulling on an apparently broken string of his violin to produce a soft wail. Therefore, I would expect this CD to have its largest audience among those who are already fans of the film.

There is no need to see the film, however, to appreciate the pure sensory experience of the music, the joy and the sadness expressed in languages most of us do not know. For those who find the Gypsy Kings a little too pat, this collection is the ultimate antidote.

Of course, there were no hits, but in world more skewed than this, the naive rock of Jad Fair and company could have been a contender. Over the loose-knit band's 20-year history, they pushed the anyone-can-do-it rock & roll aesthetic to its limits and stayed in the underground by never learning to play (or even tune) their guitars or to sing on key. Now, with other obscure heros like Mayo Thompson (of Red Crayola) and Daniel Johnston getting their due in the postindie explosion care of hip namedroppers like Sonic Youth and Nirvana, its only fair that Fair and his would-be kings get their own fantasy box set from hell: Greatest Hits collects 68 tracks from twelve H. J. records and one Jad solo shot.

Without doubt, Greatest Hits offers much more than any curiosity seeker needs in order to grasp both the charms and the terrors of the band's extended plod through post-Velvets garage punk. Chronological order, however, might have made listening to this grand and unruly compilation a little easier by keeping the formless yelling and screeching of the 1980 triple-album debut 1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts ("No More Beatlemania," "Her Parents Came Home") separated from the more melodic, Moe Tucker-like garage rock of 1988's pinnacle of accessibility, Charmed Life ("1,000,000 Kisses," "Red Dress"). Then again, Fair's child-like squeal and clangings are most moving in a middle-period song like "Ball and Chain," which mixes both styles and makes tuneful music out some of the most painfully desperate whine-cry shrills ever put to record. --Roni Sarig

I personally think that Jad Fair may very well be the owner of the most annoying voice in the world. I was a witness to this ear tryrannist at Austin's Emos rock club and apart from his drummer I hope that I never have to face that voice again.

i initially hated this cd b/c its really quite awful music done by people who clearly are not professionals. this is the only cd i have by these guys. however, this cd has grown on me more so than any cd i can remember.

there are some tracks i immediately skip ("calling all girls", "dream date", "school of love") but there are others that are downright hilarious with very unique musical arrangements. a few of my favorites are "rosemary's baby", "horseshoes", "firecracker", "roman candles", "silver and katherine", "this could be the night"... actually i really like a lot of em, which is why i gave it a '4'.

the best thing about most of these songs is you cant really tell if jad fair is being serious or just joking around. he throws in a lot of cliches which, when coupled with the absurd musical backing, makes for a very unique listening experience. i really like how this collection of songs demonstrates the range of the band. they dabble in every genre from country to cheesy lounge act love songs.

overall, its a pretty good album that grows on you if you're looking for something a bit out there.

Someone did go over their albums sensibly and pick the best songs. Plus, there's 5 unreleased songs added. It's an excellent way to start with this group. I have all their albums and couldn't resist getting this, used, because, well, because I love this band since they play music in a way that no one else does. Actually, I prefer the packaging of the 3xLP better than the 2xCD only because I prefer most LP packaging better just because its larger. However, the advantage of CD's being mobile and not breaking down over time into scratches and pops and sometimes skips, its worth it having on CD.

Musically, you get a broad selection from their various albums. I'd say its worth owning all their albums except the live BOO! which has a small number of musicians playing and just doesn't have the full sound their other albums do. Heck, there's a Japanese release Greatest Hits 2 out there somewhere as well with about 2/3rds the number of trax. I believe it was originally a 2xLP. Probably now a single CD. These guys make music from what seems to be an untrained direction yet it really swings. I particularly love it when they have a saxaphone joining them which is maybe in about a third of their songs. Whew. Obviously, this will never be radio friendly music. All the more reason to buy the CD's. Of course, you need to listen to the song snippets on amazon.com first to see if this is for you. If it is, you'll probably end up like many of us HALF JAPANESE fans, head over heels in love with the power and complexity and chaotic yet blended musical style they have. chrisbct@hotmail.com

Half Japanese is a great band... they're definitely not for everyone, but they're still great.

The reason they're great is they broke down rock culture and recreated it in a simple, completely idiosyncratic form. Most music lovers are amateur cultural critics too, so that sort of introspective diy music is pure heaven.

Yeah, compared to most other musicians, they can't play. But rock and roll is about making your shortcomings so obvious and in-your-face that they're aesthetically pleasing. And they manage to do that.

Not recommended for mainstream rock fans. Watch the documentary about them, "The Band that Would Be King" first. Essential for lo-fi and indie fans.

I had never heard Half Japaneese before I picked up the Greatest Hits, and I cant believe I was an idiot for waiting to hear them. Dont be scared off by the amount of music....its so vast and indelible, you'll wish it was 112 songs. The musical range is so amazing, and it has the best saxpophone playing this side of Dolphy's Out To Lunch. Yeah, supposedly "they cant play" etc...but I think thats nonsense. Music like this really is limitless, from free jazz to funk, to bedroom feedback jams.......its really a miracle for the ears and heart. So, buy buy buy buy. PS--(and this is very important) if anyone out there has a copy of the long out of print "Zombies of Mora-Tau" EP, please contact me, I'm really getting tired of searching for it

Jimmy LaValle, perhaps known best for his work in the contemplative dream-rock outfit Tristeza and San Diego's The Black Heart Procession, began releasing delicate, progressive instrumental work as The Album Leaf in 1999(the name comes from a Chopin piece). After years of labor-intensive touring and tinkering with complex tracks in his cramped bedroom studio, LaValle was repeatedly offered a rare invite from Icelandic phenoms Sigur Ros and Mum to record his newest solo opus in their Mosfellsbaer studio. He finally accepted and flew overseas to compose and record "In A Safe Place." With the addition of vocals (absent from previous Album Leaf releases) from The Black Heart Procession's Pall Jenkins, Sigur Ros' Jon Thor Birgisson, and LaValle himself, the songs on the new record are chillingly delicate and more pop-based than ever before. "In A Safe Place" masterfully negotiates the spaces between minimal electronica and neo-instrument rock.

The best word I can use to describe this album is boring. I like this kind of music, but the way its done on this album is so dull. The beats are really old and tired and there is nothing new here. I felt embarassed for the artist at times.

The music on In A Safe Place is beautiful, but unlike the best of Sigur Ros -- the most obvious parallel -- there is no challenge here, nothing to shake you or stir you. That's fine, I guess, but take a cut like The Outer Banks. The real Outer Banks are not only beautiful and seducing, but also angry, terrifying and a graveyard for ships. It would have been nice to see some of that part of the place worked into the music.

In a Safe Place probably works best if you have cuts from it in a shuffle playlist to take in small doses, interspersed with other types of music. Fifty-one solid minutes of ambience, though I enjoyed every cut, collectively was a bit much for me.

On the other hand, if I were sitting in the dentist's chair awaiting a root canal, Safe Place would be just the thing...

Can I just say that this album is unique and amazing, along with all of Jimmy's other projects and albums - WITHOUT grotesquely trying to describe what music does to ME personally? If you're into the experimental San Diego alternative music scene, and like bands such as Tristeza, Pinback, Black Heart Procession, Three Mile Pilot - you will no doubt want to add this and the other Album Leaf tidbits to your collection. To those that go before me, please don't quit your day jobs...

I really feel "In a safe place" when I listen to this and let it wash over and through me. Beautifully melodic ambient music, and I love the beats.

Imagine walking through a dense forest and happening upon a clearing where an organ is playing by itself in the mist. This is the mood of the first track which is so beautiful in clarity is starts to provoke a deep emotional response. You almost become the drops of rain falling from leaves, you become so involved in the moment. The first track is aptly named because it gives you a window into this world.

Thule is much more intense and wakes you up a little as vast oceans appear and you feel like you are flying out over the water into an exploration of islands. For me at least, this album was a very visual journey. By "On Your Way" I was literally on an inward journey. You may find yourself imagining yourself contemplating the lyrics that are all upside down in an amusing fashion.

Yet you drowned in the sky"

The Outer Banks has delicate magical elements woven between static beats that are encased in chimes. Streamside still maintains a purity but seems more densely woven and melodious. Moss Mountain Town is a sweet ending that retains an innocence of structure.

I missed the deep passion that Jane Olivor put into her songs. Seeing this out was a blessing. The sultry tones of Some Enchanted Evening haunt the recesses of my mind. My first remembrance of Jane Olivor was "One More Ride on the Merry-Go-Round". A song that my brother said I "Had to Hear". I searched out any and every CD she ever did and sent them to him. One of our own special memories. My brother is gone now - but the haunting melodies of Jane Olivor keep him alive whenever I hear them.

If you've never seen Jane Olivor in concert before, this CD may bother you a bit because you're used to hearing her flawless studio recordings. But having seen her in concert, this CD brings back how funny and personable she is on stage. She connects with her audience and you can hear her doing that on this CD and that makes this very special. With the exception of "Let's Make Some Memories", I loved every song on this CD and wanted more. (I didn't care for the few changes she made to the lyrics on that song). If you love Jane, buy this CD-you'll be glad you did!

Jane Olivor's mellifluous voice is timeless and captivating and angelically majestic; unfortunately the production value of her live recording tracks of her 'cabaret' standards as well as some of her new songs incorporated in SAFE RETURN are disappointing. Why? For a gifted and unique singer as Ms. Olivor, I am surprised that a major investment firm or an extremely wealthy "benefactor" hadn't offered their support by investing/producing this particular live recording production CD by hiring a full orchestra such as The Chicago Symphony Orchestra or The Boston Symphony Orchestra, or whomever - to give Ms. Olivor a well deserved "icing on the cake" sound and quality that Ms. Olivor so richly deserves (Hint... Mr. David Foster? Mr. Richard Carpenter? - are you reading this?) Ms. Olivor deserves the best in production values because she is still in top notch vocal form along with an inherent centering of security and maturity to let us know that the show goes on - no matter what, and knows that we - her fans - will always adore her - no matter what.
I had the pleasure of attending her live concert with my cousin at The Henry Ford Theatre in Los Angeles a couple of years ago and it was superb - though again, limited in her orchestral arrangements and musicians.
Ms. Olivor - if I had the wealth as many of our fellow "artists" and "industry" people have who work within the entertainment industry (and they know who they are), I would have gladly supported your efforts with this CD. The help that we - fellow `cabaret' musicians and singers know about - such as investing in orchestral music charts including charts for real string players - all to enrich this particular "live" recording CD project that would have adequately complimented your gorgeous voice a hundred times more. Let's hope that some "heavyweight industry people" who are reading this will wake-up and know that another future "live" recording with a full orchestral production complimenting your voice will be a gamble well worth the effort with an excellent financial "payday" return for their investment as well as for you. Perhaps, these "heavyweight industry people" could also utilyze savy marketing techniques by including your future recordings within various television and motion picture feature film productions, etc.?

I would like my money back! I LOVE Jane Oliver's music but on this album she sounds out of breath, quick, and going through the motions. She has taken the purity of the songs and "played" with them adding useless and unnecessary tonal changes until I almost couldn't remember the reason I had loved them in the first place. I was sad and disappointed.

Creator/producer Joel Surnow's hit action-suspense series largely turns on an innovative fusion of real-time plot line delivered by aggressive camera work and multi-frame editing technique. Sean Callery wrote incredibly beautiful pieces of music to underline the Tony/Michelle relationship. These are not on the cd. Although there are wonderful pieces of music(my personal favourite is the truly moving "The bomb detonates") I wish it were more complete.

As I am writing this review, I have already ordered the "24:Season 4 & 5" soundtrack. (The follow-up to this CD) I was so excited to find out that Sean Callery was producing a second CD for fans of "24".

As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".

One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)

If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!

This score is one of the most emotional and well composed scores there is. The upbeat track really get you excited, while the softer, quieter track really get you into the emotion of the show. This CD is a great addition to any collection. You will not be sorry for buying this CD!
