can't get enough.......2006-06-02
This album is brilliant. I had no prior exposure to Mojo Nixon and limited Jello Biafra time, and this album has me hooked on both. One of the beatiful things about this album is that, unlike in Biafra's punk work, you can actually understand a lot of the lyrics (well, I can actually understand them, which means most people probably could). It fills my need for twangy, made for singing music and anti-authroitarian lyrics.
Aside from being an amazing truck crash of style, the ideas the album expresses are consistently thought-provoking every time I listen to it. The general theme is the experiences and ideas of the working class, but Mojo and Jello are not to be pined down. The album is a remarkable balance of songs critiquing hegemonic middle class American society (ie, Love me I'm a liberal), mocking fundtamentalist thinking (Atomic Power), pointing out problematic working class cultural experiences (Mascot Mania), and honoring the experiences and ideas of working class people (Hamlet Chicken Plant Diasaster, Plastic Jesus).
Since we're playing the favorites game in these reviews, and because the music is wonderful both individually and as a wholeconcept, I'll wax musical on a few tracks (though nothing beats numbers 23 and 42):
1) Will the Fetus Be Aborted? (on my burned copy, this is the first track, and so it will always be in my mind) is such a catchy tune that it makes you want to sing with glee. My favorite verse is about the revolutionary woman having fifteen commie babies - Phyllis Schafley, ain't that great? (If you don't know if you're ready to hear this album, listen to this one first. It's an easy, biting, funny satire.)
4 (on my cd)) Atomic Power - The deadpan arrogance with which this song is mockingly sung makes me think of Stephen Colbert. I sometimes sing the refrain when I'm walking around empty streets at night - it's resounding.
8) Nostalgia for an Age that Never Existed - I think this is the best song on the album. It is such a spot-on critique of the total disregard and abuse of history in our society that it gives me goosebumps. The genre is perfectly Jonathan Swift-y - a fifties do-wop song. And it makes it clear that nobody is safe from Jello Biafra. From the use of the 50s as a heteronormative patriarchal utopia for the conservative right to the hypocrisy of the moderate left who played at the 60s and then forgot everything they learned, Biafra cuts through the fat and hits the bone of our historical myopia. He is at his most disgutedly dersisive, though, when talking about his own ilk, former punks who exaggerate their rebelious experiences and have become clsoed to the basic tenets of punk. This song is high social critique. It is a piece of art.
9) Hamlet Chicken Plant Diasaster - Eloquent and full of suppressed rage, this song shows the dragon created by the abuse of the laboring classes that is just waiting to be unleashed. It is also a fitting tribute to the victims of exploitative labor practices.
Awesome.......2006-05-18
This is just beautiful. Admittedly, I'm incredibly biased; I love Jello, his political views and the fact that he used such a traditionally "God, Apple Pie and the U S of A" genre to get them across. It's difficult for me to pick a favorite off this cd because everything is just great. I initially wanted the CD for "Will the Fetus be Aborted?" and was so pleasantly suprised.
I normally have a really difficult time getting past country's twang, but if you enjoy the majority of Jello's work, just give this one a chance.
A whole lot of rip roarin' fun.......2006-02-22
Great Great Great !!!!! I loved it right off. Go onto www.alternativetentacles.com and buy it direct. Support your independent record label. YeeHaw !!!!!!!!!
You Might Not Think They Go Together..........2005-12-30
but think peanut butter and jelly. Ain't they an unlikely pair... but they work! So does this. And neither overshadows the other on this release. Jello does most of the singing, yeah, but there's Mojo attitude in the tunes. Classics? "Are You Drinkin' with Me," "Will the Fetus Be Aborted," "When the Trees Are Gone," and "Let's Burn Nashville." Yes. sir... superb!!!!!!
Genius.......2005-01-02
Jello making a country record to show all those non conformist punk rockers a thing or two, is the most punk thing I've ever seen. And the music is good too.

The absolute best salute to a great group.......2005-08-06
Ah, my heart goes pitter patter all over again. Allan Clark was bloody beautiful (those black-haired Brits always have a soft spot in my heart) and wow...this beautiful tribute made me recall that torrid crush! His voice was beautiful, too. But the Hollies were so much more. Graham Nash stood in Clark's shadow somewhat and didn't become a real force until he left and formed Crosby, Still & Nash and then later Young, but he was part of the Hollies sounds, wrote many of their tunes. His harmony with Allan was what made the Hollies so unique.
6 set CD, generally 20 cuts per CD this is the definitive Hollies collection, likely some songs you may not have ever heard. 1-5 are double sided, with rare and unreleased recordings. The 6th CD contains live material from 60s, 70s and 90s including the Swedish Show for 1966, and the completely Hollies Live Hits album recorded in New Zealand in 1976. Also, you get a 60 page book loaded with pictures, showing them recording and a more personal look at the lads (check out Allan in the swim trunks - be still my besotted heart! lol) The inside flaps of the booklet contains pictures of every Hollies' album cover and a breakdown of what each CD contains and information about it.
Serious stuff. This is amazing. Hey, Allan, sorry you retired because I still love you, Graham and the lads and would be willing to have one more ride on the carousel!
The Hollies music was infection. You sense they had a great time singing, and did so with a flair all their own with a wee dram of humour.
There was no group like them. So thank you thank you for this ultimate tribute.
Absolutely worth the price!
A Must Have for any Hollies Fan!.......2004-10-05
This is a great compilation! Yes, I would have been happier if the first disk was in stereo instead of mono, since the tracks are available in stereo, and the great live album from the '70s, The Hollies Live Hits were not reproduced in entirety since it is already available, and, if some of the tracks from What Goes Around were included (perhaps contractual problems prevented that), and if the remaining tracks from the post Graham Nash reunion period were included, like Hillsboro, Naomi, You're All Woman, and Your Eyes. It's easy to quibble about the song selection, when the catalogue is so large, and there are still unreleased songs, nevertheless, this is a WONDERFUL compilation, with numerous unreleased tracks, and out takes. The notes on the track listings are fascinating, and the quality is excellent. I bought my first Hollies album in 1965 (Hear Here) and who would have thought I would be buying their latest release 39 years later!! Get this and the Reunion album, just re-released.

A Fantastic career overview of a very underrated band!!!.......2004-02-23
This boxset in my opinion covers everything. After reading some of the other reviews i had to respond to some of the negative comments about this box. Some reviewers have said that this box is for "diehard Hollies fans only".Well, yes thats true. For the most part only diehards would shell out this much money for this import. Some people have said that it doesnt contain enough of their hits? Then dont buy this boxset and buy a hits collection! Their are MANY to choose from out there! This box is simply an overview of their career-not GREATEST HITS.The set includes many classic lp tracks, lots of their hits,b-sides,live cuts and some unreleased gems. The sound quality is absoloutely stunning! The richness of their vocals stands out more now with the remastering than ever before! The musianship is outstanding.Tony Hicks guitar licks standing out more than ever.If you are looking for a greatest hits of the Hollies, then i would advice you to look elsewhere at the numerous collections out there.Or pick your favorite Hollies lp and buy it,EMI has recently remastered most of their CDs right up to my favorite Hollies lp(Distant Light). All CDs have also been remastered and come in very cool digipack If i was to have "one" small complaint about the boxset,it would be that maybe a couple more tracks from "Distant Light" could have been added. And maybe some more tracks from the Graham Nash era.But heck, i own all of the EMI remasters anyway! So if you are a "completist" like me,and you LOVE the Hollies then this is for you.If you are a casual fan then just get a "Greatest Hits" CD.But for me this boxset is superb.I have MANY other boxsets and the packaging and soundquality of this set ranks up there with the best of them.So once again-buy and enjoy if you REALLY LOVE the Hollies. But to be safe, check the tracklisting first because this box is not their greatest Hits-it is part of their hits and MUCH MUCH MORE!! Cheers!!
A Smooth Long Road Home, Hollies' Fans!.......2004-02-01
This 6 CD box set represents a beautifully crafted package of material encompassing the successful and tasteful career of The Hollies.
Instead of including the most popular of their hit singles, we are fortunate to hear a smart collection of unreleased material, B-sides, live recordings and a host of EP & album tracks. The recording quality is pristine.
The box set is augmented with a beautiful 60 page book offering complete discography and annotation. I bought this Holland import and it makes for a fine addition to my compact disc collection. Enjoy!!!

The set is a great overview of Joe Meek's productions and also contains rare tracks as well. Highly recommended for any fans

Customer Reviews:
I like it despite obvious flaws.......2005-02-25
Ice-T's 5th offering is for the most part considerably more aggressive, both in lyrics and in music, than his earlier works. I think it's partly so because of all the problems with his song "Cop Killer", and the resulting break up with his record label. But part of this newly found aggression was surely added intentionally. Think of it as a concept of O.G. pushed to the edge and then some. Many people didn't appreciate it, and many complained about over the top amounts of explicit lyrics here, much of which are there just for the sake of it. I think it's not a problem, as it gives the album great recognizability and a character of its own. "Home Invasion" is the album that has some of the best Ice-T songs, like "It's On", "Home Invasion", "Race War", "Watch The Ice Break", or "Gotta Lotta Love". It also struck me with its 2 slow tracks, "Addicted to Danger" and "That's How I'm Livin'", both of which feature an unusually melodic, and at the same time very menacing and dense musical background, with Ice-T's vocal tone to match. These are the tracks that will easily justify the purchase of this album.
On the down side, there are several worthless filler tracks here, that should have been scrapped before the CD went into print. It's the pointless guest-star songs "Depths of Hell" and "Funky Gripsta", as well as a couple of other weaker tracks. Whether their presence lowers the value of this album, is to be decided by the listener him/herself.
My copy of "Home Invasion" came with a bonus remix CD titled "The Last Temptation of Ice". Of 7 tracks there, one, "Ricochet", is previously unreleased. The liner notes suggest that it was written during the "O.G." sessions. This one is quite good. I also liked remixes for "Gotta Lotta Love" and "G-Style", which add more musical value to these, musically basic, tracks. The other 4 songs on the remix CD are a throwaway, most always lyrically edited for radio format. I guess, this bonus CD wasn't worth the extra bucks that I paid for it.
Creative Ice-T Album.......2004-08-29
For me Ice-T is one of the best rappers ever and I've spent long hours listening to his hardcore gangster rap. Kind of odd for a middle-aged white guy but what can I say? His in your face, pro-freedom of speech attitude is one that I hold myself. He is one of the founding fathers of gangster rap and one of it's most innovative lyricists. I've seen Ice-T do his rap act only once but have seen him with his band Body Count four times and he puts on a tremendous show.
Home Invasion is probably the funniest album Ice-T has put out and it is one of my favorites. I find it odd that Ice-T fans that I know don't like this album as much as I did. It think it's a superb album and while not as good as OG The Original Gangster, it may be Ice-T's most creative album (other than Body Count's first release).
I rate this album very highly. In fact it gets six starts from some very excellent songs. Very few albums get six starts from me. Most albums you're lucky to have but one song you truly like on it. This one is full of good songs.
The six stars are for:
Home Invasion *
G Style **
Watch the Ice Break *
Pimp Behind the Wheels *
99 Problems *
--------------------------------------------------------------
Ratings: CDs are rated simply by how many good songs are on the album. Great songs get two stars, and good songs get one star. Songs that get no stars are those that I might like but not enough to give it a star or ones I find boring or actively dislike. CDs are not penalized for songs that I don't like because they are easy enough to skip over. There is no maximum number of stars a CD can get, but of course the more stars it gets, the better the CD.
As with all reviews, these are my subjective opinions on the album.
Ice-T - Home Invasion.......2004-06-19
This was a pretty bad album from Ice-T but I've heard worse from him. I think that all that "Cop Killer" hoopla clouded his vision. There are a lot of lousy tracks on here like "99 Problems", which Jay-Z took from and made his own version of it for 2003's The Black Album.
A Letdown at the hoedown.......2003-08-25
While riding high atop the crest of publicity he garnered from his "Copkiller" publicity and Time-Warner pullout, expectations at the time of this release were pretty damn high. Probably too high, because "O.G." was a critical high point to slam all others to the ground.
I would have been satisfied if this album continued in the same vein, but unfortunately it's wayyy too patchy. Too many throwaway tracks like "99 Problems", "Funky Gribsta" and "Pimp Behind The Wheel" to take it very seriously, although there are more than a few tunes worth owning. You just gotta dig 'em out.
"Gotta Lotta Love" is hated by many, but is one of the only tracks on this album with any substance, so it's essential. Ditto "I Ain't New To This", "That's How I'm Living", and "Message To The Soldier".
Perhaps the worst Ice T CD........2003-06-22
After the often brilliant rap and production of "O.G.", this CD was an extreme letdown, mostly because of Ice's "home invasion" vibe....Ice T lost lots of fans with this one. Most people didn't like the lyrics promoting violent home invasions. Hey Ice, where's the intellectual rap for us, your fans with hearts and brains?

Petula in top form singing mostly covers.......2003-04-05
Apart from the title track, which Petula co-wrote, this album is filled with covers of some of Petula's favorite songs of the era. Petula clearly loved the music of Gordon Lightfoot, as he is represented by The gypsy, which opens this set, and by a medley of Here comes that rainy day feeling again and If you could read my mind. There is also a Bread medley, made up of Baby I'm a want you and Everything I own.
In the old fashioned way is the English translation of a Charles Aznavour song. Although Charles eventually recorded the song in English himself, Petula was the first to do so. Killing me softly, a huge hit for Roberta Flack, was apparently inspired by a Don McLean concert. Half as much is a Hank Williams classic that became a pop hit for Rosemary Clooney in the fifties. Until it's time for you to go, written by Buffy Sainte-Marie, is usually associated with Elvis Presley. I can see clearly now was written by reggae singer Johnny Nash, although Petula sings it her way.
While not essential, this is a fine album that will be appreciated by Petula's fans everywhere. It should also appeal to those uncommitted fans who like these songs and enjoy listening to cover versions.
One of her best - without question.......2001-12-29
This album is one of my favorite Petula discs. Recorded after her USA heyday (or at least what many believe was her USA heyday), at a time when us Petula fans were ACHING for more recordings (only to find out they weren't being released here in the USA), Petula's voice is strong, emotional, vulnerable, etherial - you name, it's all here on this CD. "Come On Home" is amazing to me. Her voice is so delicate on this recording - Petula sings "pretty", with that heavy-yet-somehow-subtle rhythm driving the song along, doing an exquisite vocal acrobatic at the end of the song (you know how she can suddenly zip into a vocal riff, hitting a clear, clear soprano note, perfectly blended into her belt voice?)...
"Old-Fashioned Way" - terrific version of this. "Killing Me Softly" - nice, nice job. In fact, there's a number of great studio performances on the CD - which makes it one I highly, highly recommend.
Petula Clark is one of the all-time great studio recording artists. She is a woman who totally understands the art of recording - and blessed with a voice that makes love to the microphone.
This CD - maybe not TOTALLY perfect - is something I hope Ms. Clark is very proud of. She gives it 100% - and as a result, we have a recording (made in 1974, I think) that remains strong in 2001.
Without hesitation, GET THIS ONE!
A U.K.-ONLY LP IS NOW IN THE STATES ON CD.......2000-09-17
At the time this LP was originally released in the U.K., Clark was having contractual problems with her label here in the U.S., so this never had a Stateside issue - and what a pity, because it would have established her as a successful "contemporary adult" artist and allowed her to finally put to rest her 1960s "pop" image. Any one of the 12 tracks here could have been released as a single and put her back at the top of the charts. The opening song, "The Gypsy", is from the pen of Gordon Lightfoot, and - like so many of his compositions - unfolds as a fairy tale-like story, with Clark and background chorus weaving a spell much like that of the title character herself. The best of the lot here are covers - but not copies - of such hits as "Killing Me Softly", "I Can See Clearly Now", "Without You", and "Until It's Time for You to Go", and the listener will be hard-pressed to recall the originals after hearing Clark's interpretations. And what a remarkable blend of styles exists among the rest of the offerings here! There's more than a touch of 40s "doo-wop" in her rendition of Charles Aznavour's "In the Old Fashioned Way" (the first English-language version recorded); two medleys - Bread's "Baby I'm a Want You/"Everything I Own" and "Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling"/"If You Could Read My Mind" - each combine seemingly disparate tunes and make them sound like obvious combinations; a lushly-orchestrated "Till" that has surely been played at a wedding or two; and with "Half As Much" and the self-penned title tune, Clark gave herself a chance to sing the American "country"-style music she enjoyed - and for which she had a natural affinity. Arrangement credits are shared mostly by Tommy Oliver, John D'Andrea, and Frank Owens - Clark's concert accompanist at the time - and all obviously recognized her strengths and knew how to capitalize on them. This should go into your shopping cart immediately - you won't be disappointed.

Deep Purple was the first band to note that heavy metal and classical music share a certain deluded grandeur and attempted to combine the two. While what resulted--specifically, their Concerto for Group and Orchestra--was pretty fearful stuff, it did, for better or for worse, pave the way for a generation of classically influenced heavy-rock bands: King Crimson, Yes, and Queen, among others. The concerto on this live CD appears alongside a bunch of the Purple's more genteel songs they played at the Royal Albert Hall, a show that celebrated their 30th anniversary of their first appearance there. Ian Gillan, who can still do a creditable impression of a bomber revving for takeoff, shares vocals with Ronnie James Dio and Sam Brown. --Andrew Mueller

A must see.......2007-03-11
Even if you are not a Deep Purple fan this one is worth the investment. Whilst a little of the visual could be improved it's all there and the audio is of good quality. Butterfly Ball is a real hoot and if you don't enjoy that then you don't like music!
I reall contrast to the 1969 version of the Concertos where the conductor atually enjoys the whole experience.
Go for it!
I was VERY disappointed..........2003-08-12
The Amazon reviewer was right: the first several songs on CD 1 was very laid back, reminding me of Division-Bell-Era Pink Floyd. (Boring!) Didn't hear drums until the third or fourth track, then it was ANYTHING but rock beats. What made S & M so great is that Metallica didn't write BALLADS or NOVELTY SONGS for their production: they rocked on with what they had on hand. Deep Purple wrote some of the hardest rocking songs in the R&R/Heavy Metal library (Mandrake Root, Space Truckin, Child in Time), and so it's MHO that they should have employed them as orchestra pieces: overall, they should have rocked the whole time.
Of course, Steve Morse was an odd substitute for Richie Blackmore, but stalwarts Ian Gillian and Jon Lord was in good form that night. The record doesn't start consistently rocking until WRING THAT NECK at the end of CD 1. (Kind of thinking about it, I would have liked to wring the necks of those who made the decisions to program and preserve this somewhat idiotic concert...ha, just kidding.)
On CD 2, I thought the concerto was pretty well executed (esp. the first movement) and the last couple songs on the album (esp Ted the Mechanic and Smoke on the Water) were well orchestrated and played. I guess I would give this album 4 stars if they only released CD2 and lowered the price.
no it is not true, this band is great.......2002-09-26
the reviewers below dont know what would they say,......this cd is a remake of concerto for group orchestra what the band did in 1969. the place took in the royal albert hall london 1999. I saw the performance in germany 2000 with the george enescu orchestra.
The result is amazing,...buy the cd!
Go Back To MACHINEHEAD!.......2002-09-22
This is NOT Deep Purple nor was the experience I had listening to them in concert (Summer 2002) -Nashville. This is a watered- down version of one of the best bands to ever grace the planet.Dio is a great vocalist and "smoked" them live in Nashville. Steve Morse is a great guitarist but his bluesy rendition of the poweful rhythm guitar parts in Smoke On the Water were a joke! ... your instrumental that was a question mark for the new album was the best thing I heard that night!! ... Dio and the Scorpions were great!
a reviewer from canton massachusetts.......2001-10-29
not worth the money! just because your a fan of steve morse, dosn't mean that your also a fan of d p. here they jumped on the trendy band wagon like yngwie, kansas scorpion, etc.i paid twice the amount as the regular cd for stress fest xtra tracks only to here i xtra song, thatwasn't even written by steve.here,it's almost the same situation.the only true s m .song,is t i o a t p.how many times does he have to re-record this and play it exactly like in 1978.i wish that s m would go back to doing solo work.his music was as interessting as george lynch, satch, vai, etc.i gave this 2 stars because i like steve, but that dosn't necessarilly mean that i like orchestra music,or deep purple.

Home Invasion Is Utterly Tha Bomb!.......1999-02-24
This CD was excellent! Although the one gabber track was not to my liking (I just don't like that style), The tracks by Oscar Da Grouch, Simply Jeff and R.A.W. were definitely floor fillers!!!!! A well rounded and excellent cross section of the underground sound that is being put out by the Southern Cal Junglist Massiv... A must for anyone's collection!
Best CD I have! Underground sounds w/great DJ scratching!.......1999-01-27
I bought Home Invasion recently and was really suprised that the artwork and music were top notch. Simply Jeff, RAW, and Ron D Core are amazing. The Dj mix of this cd is the most cutting edge stuff I have heard. If you are looking for a gr8 drum and bass, and underground dj cd, this is the one to get. It's also cool cuz it is independent and the artwork is really cool.
