4 out of 5 stars POWERFUL VOICES.......2006-02-28

Young tenors at their individual and collective best. Powerful, dynamic, and emotionally charged performance.
Good selection of vocal works for the newcomer, some light, some heavy.

5 out of 5 stars Best discovery in music in a quite some time........2005-07-08

I happened to see this ensemble perform in concert on PBS one night last winter during a fund raiser.

All that I can say is, "Wow".

Since that time I have purchased this CD for myself and as gift to three other music lovers; all of which have offered me their gratitude.

It is not very often that a musical experience of skill and talent surfaces. They hold us within the magic of voice, combined with musical stanzas and lyric, and the chemistry of TEAMWORK.
The gentlemen excel in such offerings as Vangelis' "Conquest of Paradise", "World Anthem", and the melancholy Irish "Thunderpoint", which sends chills down my spine.

If I can choose one group to open the next Olympics celebration it is The Ten Tenors.
I can only hope that they broaden their US tour.
I can also only hope that they continue to produce and record more albums.

Bravo

Yes, clearly the name alone is a homage/copy from the Three Tenors and, no, they aren't as operatic as the others. However, they are 10 guys who sing a cross between choir, Broadway, opera and a capella. That said, you'll find these guys encapitvating. First of all, the operatic aspect is a misnomer, because when they're having fun, they're at their best. Listen to them do their Dancing Queen Melody. Not only is it well done, it's fun and hysterical.

This all said, the CD contains a bonus DVD disc, which in my opinion blows away the CD. Not that it's as well produced; however, you need to see these 10 guys interact to get the idea of how good they are. Their faces express the emotion, as all 10 of them work together to take you across various musical genres. Their interaction is what makes them special, which is why I say, "Buy this CD for the DVD"

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2005-07-04

Delta Air Lines featured most of this album on thier in-flight audio, and I heard it on a long flight and its equally long return. Bought the album after that. Not a fan of opera, classical, or pop, I was surprised to find that The Ten Tenors did all of these better then any of the three genres' more popular artists. I enjoy the album and recommend it as adult contemporary.

5 out of 5 stars "brilliant arrangements and performances ~ The Ten Tenors".......2004-10-23

Rhino Records presents not just Three Tenors or Irish Tenors...but the latest surprise on the classical scene is The Ten Tenors with their new album "Larger Than Life", featuring a fourteen track compact disc and four cue bonus Live DVD...Australian gentlemen who will thrill you with classical vocal repertoire of ballads and even a classic rock tune or two.

Students in 1995 studying opera classics, they performed in 1998 while attending the University and began touring...haven't stopped since ~ their individuality and comradeship with close touching harmony will soon grab you and never let go ~ outstanding performances "STONDE" [Patrick Abrial/Jean Marc Grossi/Thierry Micaelli], beautiful beyond words, "POR UNA CABEZA" [Carlos Gardel/Alfredo Le Para], the tango from the film "Scent Of A Woman", the vocal is extraordinary, "SUNDANCE" [Andy Arthurs/Philip Chambon], folk genre beat with tempos that get completely under your skin, terrific arrangements by the composer, "DESTINY LIES" [Craig Atkinson/Stewart Morris], lead vocal by Jason Turbull reads like a Top Ten New Age Hit, full orchestra and chorus abound ~ "CONQUEST OF PARADISE" [Vangelis], non stop harmony and brilliant orchestration with the full voices of The Ten Tenors, enough power to light up a big city block ~ "BICYCLE RACE" [Freddie Mercury], the ultimate big hit of Queen, brilliant arrangements by Shannon Brown and Drew Graham.

If you love classical and outstanding vocals by young talent, then this one has your name on it...watch out world here comes some of the best of the best around today...hats off to Rhino and Warner Bros. for this one of a kind release...hope to see more of the same...piano, arranger and synthesizer by Steven Baker..the DVD is really a trip and a half...great job by one and all ~ The Ten Tenors

5 out of 5 stars Another great album!!!!.......2001-11-14

Michael Hill said in a recent interview that he really likes to try another kind of works and it's really what he have done at this new album by an independent label. He left Alligator Records but don't forgot that roots and friends, and that old style to play, his urban blues with great social influences. What is curious is the fact that Hill seems to be affective with kids, and the art cover of this cd reveals this side of his personality!!The participation of Living Colour's Vernon Reid on "41 Shots" must be remembered.A great album of this really true bluesman searching for new bluesways!!!I enjoyed so much!!!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT NEW ALBUM BY THE MOB.......2001-08-27

This is urban blues at it's best. It's Hill's fourth cd, and IMHO his best so far. He breaks the album up into 4 different suites. Each one involving different issues like love, lust, commintment, and the trials and tribulations of life in the hood. The songwriting here is especially strong. There are so many good, well written tracks, it's hard to name a favorite. The best set of songs come from the "Tales From The Hood" suite. Songs like "Larger Than Life" and "Hurt Nobody" offer up some of the most sizzling guitar work on the album. While "41 Shots" (not to be mistaken for Springsteen's version), drives home a hard hitting social message about the needless police shootings of a young California woman and a New York man. All the music on here stays in your head and demands second listens. As usual, Hill brings a lot of the musical genres together like Chicago blues, rock, and soul. He even does a little funk on his one cover here of George Clinton's "Cosmic Slop". And he ends the album on a high note with the latin flavored "Blessings" which also has the brilliant and beautiful guitar work. Hill is at times a very adventurous player, who plays with a lot of passion and heart. I think he's a very underrated guitar player, and a sheer joy to listen to. Every Blues Mob fan should have this one. It's contemporary blues at it's very best.

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of her time!.......2006-12-12

Jody has sustained an impressive career and this CD in some ways solidified her reputation as a solo artist. From soul train, Shalamar, Solo Artist to underground club & drum and bass. She is the epitome of a pop/soul star without the overexposure. She is and always will be one of my favorite dance artist. She & Shalamar ROCKED THE EIGHTIES! Glad to know she is still making hits: last August 2008 MAKEOVER.

5 out of 5 stars Jody steps up her game.......2006-04-22

Jody Watley entered the music scene as a solo act in 1987, making her debut one of the most recognized & loved for it's time. Her combination of high fashion, cool vocals, & funky pop tunes made her quite the sensation.

She continued in 1989 with her followup LP "Larger Than Life". Here, there is a bit more emphasis on the "new jack" sound in which popular R&B was currently residing. Jody manages to infuse it her typical "high fashion" style, delivering odes to independence, "real love" (no pun intended), & just being who you are.

Musically, again helmed by Andre Cymone, the "new jack" sound as stated permeates the record. So along with the more dance oriented cuts (i.e.-"Come Into My Life"), cuts such as "L.O.V.E.R." & "Friends" exude a hip hop attitude. Bouncy beats & some skittering synths, & uses of some interesting sampling all work quite well together. The latter song, which features guest raps by Eric B. & Rakim, was the first of it's kind. Why some tried to credit Mariah Carey with this, Jody was the first mainstream R&B female artist to feature a hip hop act on a cut.

Vocally, Jody's smoky & enthralling voice continues to get better. She manages to steer ballads such as the cool "Everything". Alternating between sassy spoken word & soulful phrasing, as on the lead single "Real Love" Jody sounds very fresh & enthused.

Once again, the look of the record was VERY ahead of it's time. You can see where Jody Watley's high fashion execution in her music & look would be felt & used by acts such as En Vogue, Destiny's Child, Amerie, Brandy, Aaliyah, the list goes on. I really saw the inspiration in Amerie's "1 Thing" video, which to me recalled elements of the "Real Love" video.

I highly recommend the "Larger Than Life". It is definitely more than just a nostalgia piece. For those who can appreciate older musical textures, this record has held up well. Only maybe a small percentage of the tracks really don't go anywhere, but work within the context of the record well. This is one of my favorite Jody Watley albums & hopefully it'll become yours as well.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good .......2005-11-28

But I am a real fan of Real Love and Friends the other songs is Ok Pretty Good CD

4 out of 5 stars Real love, everybody needs one-gotta have real love.......2005-08-04

Given how Andre Cymone's production really gave her debut album a real kick, including her single "Looking For A New Love," it's no surprise then that she had Cymone produce and help with songwriting on the entirety of her sophomore effort, Larger Than Life, which shifted the danceable R&B, funky bass, and heavy instrumentation that made her big into new jack gear. And her debut single, the bass-heavy "Real Love" with its heavy synth riffs, is an example of that, and is merely not "Looking For A New Love Part II."

Yet, fate has cruel a way of repeating itself. "Real Love" was another #2 pop hit, but an R&B chart-topper. The culprit this time was fellow dancemeister Paula Abdul with "Forever Your Girl." There was no way "Real Love" could've failed to top. Still, another outstanding Watley song. And like "Looking For A New Love," there is an extended version of the single, with the repeated "ohh ohh ahh" refrain, brisk horns, and some excerpts from "New Love" included.

She gets help from Eric B & Rakim on "Friends," on how some people pretend to be friends, and how it's hard to find friends due to jealousy, envy, and the fact that friends often won't tell what they're thinking. As she sings, "Friends will let you down, friends won't be around. You need them most of all friends. Friends are hard to find, friends yours and mine." This #9 danceable pop hit, featuring some old school scratching, really tells it like it is.

Then comes the #4 ballad "Everything" and she doesn't do too bad a job here, on the only song not written by Watley and Cymone. The other ballad she does here, "Only You," has brief keyboards bursts akin to Spandau Ballet's "True" and either ballad would've done great as a single despite her lack of range. No, she's still got a smoky and sexy ambience whenever she sings ballads, and that's good too.

Examples of the energetic higher gear of dance include "What'cha Gonna Do For Me" with its overlapping drum machines, synths, and the shouted "what! what!" before the title is sung. However, the mid-paced ballad "Precious Love" stalled at #87 and given the other songs here, isn't a singleworthy candidate. Why not "Lifestyle," which starts with some slow Giorgio Moroder-like synths before boom!, going into high gear dance with those catchy drums and synths combo? It's a party in full swing, this song. Or why not the equally vivacious "Once You Leave"? "Come Into My Life" with its initial pounding percussion beats and funky bass instrumentation is yet another single candidate.

There are a few filler tracks in the midsection, but it comes back to life beginning with "Something New." Yet the album is more polished and skilled than her debut, and Larger Than Life shows an artist and producer tightening things and ratcheting the dance rhythms to a higher gear while still in the non-techno zone.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Not A Burglar Revisited.......2003-12-08

Although it's great that Freddie's very last album has finally been put out on CD, it will hardly be to everyone's taste. While its predecessor "Burglar" was and still is a brilliant album on which funk, blues and rock merged easily, "Larger Than Life" is too disjointed to come close to the quality of that one. This album has its moments though. Several tunes were pulled from a Freddie concert at the armadillo headquarters in Texas, and 'Meet Me in The Morning' and especially the funkfilled nutcracker 'You Can Run But You Can't Hide' are fabulous. The studio-cuts are scarce and ambivalent. While 'It's Better To Have' is nice, doowop-ish blues, and 'Your Move' obviously is the grooviest and best studio-take on here, things get ugly with the devastatingly droll 'Boogie Bump', a hideous attempt at reconciling blues with disco, complete with chirping backing vocals, dull lyrics and worst of all: Freddie's sharp axe is tuned down here!

All in all, for Freddie King fans, this CD is a must. For pure blueslovers, it is not. The live side makes up for the one or two bad studio tracks (Boogie Bump.........). The cover is a exact replica of the original LP, and the liner notes by Thomas Russell are fantastic!

3 out of 5 stars Allfrumtha I: the next OutKast?.......2005-05-17

Back for the third time, rhyming duo Binky Mac and Squeak Ru are ready for the big time. With their latest accomplishment Larger Than Life, they attempt to become the next OutKast with their audacious and experimental instrumentation. However, this newfound bravery can prove to be either an immense success or a complete failure.

Aft I's introduction is that of any Eminem album, declaratory yet humorous. Their first song "Runnin' This" shows their courage not only with bold lyrics, but also with an electrically charged background, and then the album proceeds to the club-ready hit "Lil' Momma." "Can't Get Enuff" revives their static vibe and adds an ingenious funk to create one gritty tune. Aft I take over the world soon after in their victorious "Hero;" "Why They Wanna Keep Me Down" appends Latin to Aft I's list of genres to cover, giving listeners another song to duly praise. Also, their lyrical content is admirable, as they stray from the common vulgarities found in mainstream hip hop and aim for cleaner, more inspirational tunes.

In contrast, Aft I sometimes prove too audacious in their experimentation. For example, in their song "Larger Than Life," they try too hard to add diversity while overlooking one serious flaw: the wholly flat bass line, which distracts listeners from an otherwise decent song. "Pump Ya Fist" though upright on its own, is merely average after hearing its predecessors, and "Cognac"'s smooth groove is unfortunately countered by its undeniable simplicity. "Dangerous" while somewhat imaginative is overly synthesized and could use a dramatic violin accompaniment - something to contrast the backbeat better than that worn-out synthesizer. "Iz U Wit It" furthers this same downfall of Aft I and by the time one makes it to "12 Bars," it seems the duo has fizzled out.

Overall, while Allfrumtha I may have succeeded in creating one truly "Larger Than Life" album, at times, their excitement to create a whole new world leads them to see their songs as a whole, rather than focusing on important details that could make their songs sound so much more proficient. In the end though, Binky Mac and Squeak Ru finally generated an album that will truly leave a mark on listeners and hopefully earn them the recognition they've been working so hard to attain.

5 out of 5 stars Worth buying for the "B" side track.......2006-01-19

Larger than life is a top track, one of my many favourite BSB tracks, however, 'If You Knew What I Knew' is a superb song, and should have been released as an "A" side track.
This single is worth buying for this song alone.

3 out of 5 stars What do you mean, CD single IMPORT?!?.......2000-08-11

Obviously, something is wrong with these record labels like Jive. They may have strict policies against putting out singles like this in the US. Maybe they want ready buyers to stop saving money and get into a "spend-more-get-more" routine all the time? Yeah, I like the song, but why is it that every video that has an American music video release has a single release as an import? What in the world is going on here?

That truly isn't larger than life, but I kind of like the way the import CD single cases are made. Still, it's a waste of money unless you are willing to up some extra bank for it.

love this song wrote for us the fans.If you knew what I knem only a "b- side" this shows what a strong group they are when a fantastic song like this has to be used in this way.Should have made it on the album but could we have picked a song it would have replaced, I don't think so

5 out of 5 stars Kewl CD Single.......2000-07-27

I think this is a really good single. I have it for myself. My mom got it for me for X-Mas and I just couldn't keep the song "If You Knew What I Knew" off repeat! This song shows great talent that AJ McLean has. As well as the rest of the boys. This is a real soulful ballad and is worth getting. Track one is also good cause the music is just like the video and track two is pretty awesome especially if you like songs that are eight minutes long.

"If You Knew What I Knew" is an excellent song and should have made it in Millennium INSTEAD of "I Need you Tonight", INSTEAD of "Perfect Fan", INSTEAD of "No One Else Comes Close."

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best !.......2000-06-23

This Cd was one of my favorite BSB singles. It included Larger Than Life (album version as well as the instrumental)and a great song that Aj helped co-write, "If you knew what i knew". That was a great song and the vocals are beautiful. I highly reccommend it !
