It's hard to imagine a more schizophrenic album than Fireflies, but Faith Hill, the comely pride of Star, Mississippi, had a lot of different factions to please. There's the country set, furious about the L.A. excess of 2002's Cry, as ravaged a pop album as ever made. Then there's the club set, which actually mistook Cry for music, and wanted more. Finally, there's Hill herself, still bruised from the critical drubbing the last album got, and obviously feeling the need to prove herself anew, going brunette to show her transformation. The bad news about Fireflies is that the all-out country songs--the autobiographical "Mississippi Girl," which practically begs forgiveness for Cry, and the cartoonish "Dearly Beloved," a hoedown ditty about a shotgun wedding--are embarrassing attempts to show that the Dixified diva hasn't gotten above her raising. Then, two other offerings--Darrell Scott's preachy protest number "We've Got Nothing But Love to Prove" and the beautiful torch ballad "Paris"--are both lyrical head-scratchers, and find the artist floundering as to who she is and what she's about. Where Hill knowingly flexes her muscle is in tackling three complex, literate songs by alt-folkie Lori McKenna--the title track (about the power of dreams), "Stealing Kisses" (about reevaluating life choices), and "If You Ask" (about living with a substance abuser). Hill gives these performances nuanced readings that say buckets more about her own life than "Mississippi Girl" could ever convey, and point to an emotional reservoir Hill is just beginning to tap. Here's hoping she goes back to that well again and again. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:
Faith at her best!.......2007-07-12
Fireflies is definitely Faith at her best! An amazing blend of country/rock/acoustic, there's a song for every mood. Faith puts the heartfelt lyrics of songwriter Lori McKenna to life with her immense vocal talents! If you're a major faith fan like myself, this CD is a MUST have!!!
Faith is restored.......2007-07-06
This album is a very healthy 4 stars. Faith came back to teh modern country fold and it clearly suits her better than her ventures on the previously two albums, Breathe and CRy. Good songs:
Sunshine and Summertime - fun song about having fun in summer
Mississippi Girl - rock edge to it, has spark. Faith proclaims she is still a "Regular Jane" from Mississippi at heart.
Dearly Beloved - kind bluegrassy. Funny song about redneck marriage. "See the side effects of sex and alcohol."
Stealing Kisses - slow tune about wife/mother who is neglected in her family life
I Want You - starts with a quick beat. Alternates with a powerful singing of the chorus. Compares her want of lover to forces of nature [e.g., river seeking ocean]
Lucky One - a fun and bouncy tune like Sunshine and Summertime, but a bit more of a mesage. The singer realizes she doesn't have much stuff, but is lucky to have her lover.
Nothing But Love to Proove - spirited. Observations are kind of trite, but a nice tune
Paris - the extra track. About Paris after the liberation in WWII. Kind of a Casablanca theme but with happy results.
Fireflies is a must have.......2007-06-03
Firleflies is a great cd! It really has a variety of songs and Faith does a great job! While some songs are upbeat, like sunshine and summertime, others show a more artistic view, like Stealing Kisses. All of the songs deal with real life issues, times. Mississippi girl was written just for Faith, obviously! She really pored her heart& Soul into this one!!I do think Cry still showed her voice the best, but this one is for the country raido fans too I guess. I would like more gospel songs, or ones written by her though. Overall, the sounds are great and inspiring.
Great CD from a Great Artist.......2007-03-30
I was never a great country fan until Shania Twain's "the Woman in Me" came out. Then I started listening to more country music. Faith Hill is such a wonderful artist. This is a really fun CD to listen to. My favorites are "Fireflies" which reminds me of my daughter (3 years old) who believes she is a princess (as do I, of course) and "Lucky One" which I discovered from the CD jacket was actually recorded on the day my daughter was born...talk about lucky. I also have "Cry" and "Breathe" and I think each CD shows a different side to Ms. Hill. She is truly a versatile artist.
Great CD! It's Faith Doing What She Does Best, Singing.......2007-02-11
I think that everything worth saying about this CD has been said. If you like it, you do, and if you don't, then you don't. I personally don't think that it's fair to try and box a performer in and expect them to keep turning out the same thing over and over again on every CD. Then people would be whining that Faith is just playing it safe and is afraid to take chances. So, it seems that no matter what an artist does, people will always find something to complain about. I once heard an expression that said, "those who can, will do it. Those who can't, will review it."
I do have one question about the song "Sunshine and Summertime." Why does it sound like the very beginning of the track is chopped off? It sounds like the band was already into playing the song when someone hit the record button. The song is really fun! But that intro sounds like something was chopped off. And it's like this on every copy I've heard. Anyone else notice this?
I feel that this is a great CD by faith hill as she learns and grows as an artist. Music is like an audio painting. and even artists who paint go through different periods. Some people will condemn Faith Hill for the 2002 "Cry" CD because it wasn't "more of the same." I commend her for having the courage to step over the line and taking that chance. I'm sure that she could play it safe and keep turning out the same kind of album over and over again. Then people would start whining about how she's in a rut. So, it seems that there really is no right choice. It has to be hard to go through thousands of demos and pick the ones that you think will make a great CD. You have millions of fans out there, and pleasing all of them is impossible! If I could talk to Faith, I'd just tell her to keep following your heart and your instincts. They will never lie to you, or lead you astray.
"Fireflies" is a great CD. And the next CD might be totally different from this one. But keep it in perspective. It's all music, and it's all good.

The short-lived classic-rock supergroup Blind Faith's sole album has aged remarkably well. In 1969, Blind Faith fused the psychedelic blues of Eric Clapton and the soulful vocals and keyboards of Steve Winwood with the polyrhythmic, Afrocentric leanings of drummer Ginger Baker. "Can't Find My Way Home" is one of the hippie era's most lyrically poignant, sonically subtle tunes. The record has a lot of surprises; "Presence of the Lord" is rousing and melancholy at the same time, while the way the bass and guitar double-team on the introductory melodic line to "Had to Cry Today" makes a hard-rock cliché fresh again. The 10-minute drum solo on "Do What You Like" is pretty good as 10-minute drum solos go. This 2000 reissue of the album omits the unreleased jams and mixes that fill the second disc of the deluxe reissue that appeared earlier in the year. --Mike McGonigal

"Well All Right" please make sure you view the version with the 9 bonus tracks!.......2007-07-02
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am often asked to write or talk about various 60's and 70's rock and roll recordings.
Although it was devastating that Cream had broken up, Two-thirds of the band Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker surfaced along with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech in Blind Faith. Although there would only be one album it has left its mark as a must own for any fan of blues-rock and Clapton or Winwood.
Please make sure you are viewing the 2CD version with the original LP and the nine bonus tracks (Including 1 CD of all Jams).
The deluxe issue has such intense bonus material that it had to be extended to a two CD set. "Can't Find My Way Back Home" and "Presence Of The Lord" have so much soul and emotion it could give a heart to the Tin Man.
There isn't a bad moment from the opening note to the final bonus track. Although you'll feel like a kid in a candy store and want to experience a bit of this and that, listen to the first six tracks on CD 1 straight through. This will enable you to experience the music the way it was in 1969 and in the best quality. After you are able to digest the brilliance of the album if you have any energy left go for the bonus tracks. Some may have had the pleasure of hearing "Sleeping In The Ground" previously. When you get to the Jams it will reaffirm why Clapton's output from the Yardbirds through Derek & The Dominos was nothing short of Herculean.
Be well always,
Craig Fenton

just what I was looking for...............2007-05-17
this was perfect! I have wanted this cd for quite a while.
amazon is a great way to find that "old" cd.
Still groovy, after all these years..........2007-05-13
It was a superband that had it all, and it is a delight to tool down the highway to these tunes. Each song on this "album" is a gem.
Justice is Blind, Faith is Kind................2007-05-07
After groveling in the hovels of dark cafes and zoos after midnight, I finally emerged to the meditative mountain for a quick, few, inspirational visionary episodes. What meditative mountain you ask? I am a Seer- of course I have one. Anyway-through the haze- I was able to see many things concerning this album. And seeing isn't always good when you're asked to take them on Blind Faith alone. Regardless- it certainly is more pleasant reviewing this than having my locks changed in my castle (yes, again!). It's amazing what fans will do. Oh well.
I have to be honest here, you have to look at this album in context if you are to get anywhere. Yes, yes, I love it too. But honestly, is there anyone out there that really, sincerely believes that this is the best they could do? I certainly don't. I think this was meant as a side project only for Clapton and Winwood, in between groups or group obligations. Why isn't it the best? You only have to look closely at what came after - Winwood's "John Barleycorn Must Die", and Eric's "Layla". Now THOSE are highpoints my people. Blind Faith has many pleasurable moments here - and wonderful musicianship. But nothing really lifts you more than three inches off the ground.
Which is not to say that there aren't superb gems. The subtle, quiet yearning of Winwood with great acoustic guitars on "Can't Find My Way Home". Listen to the insistent snaking along of the beat and Winwood's soulful plea at the end. Wonderful. Too bad everything was not like this.
"Had to Cry Today" has an interesting riff to recommend it- and it flys off and returns to us time and time again. But the song itself labors along and the best part is the lead guitar interplay between Winwood and Clapton. I will say this- at least those two have some idea of where all this is going. But Ginger Baker and Rick Grech, although both extremely talented, are overshadowed.
Ironically, one of the few songs that show any real life here, "Well All Right" was not written by any of the group members but was a Buddy Holly tune. And Winwood share's his piano gifts with us here. Nice jam at the end Steve!
"Presence of the Lord" is a Clapton tune and a lumbering (or is it slumbering?) one at that. And one has to wonder if this was before, during, or after his heroin addiction? I would hate to think the Lord had anything to do with that! In fairness, the thing that saves this song is the middle break when the Lord allows Clapton the freedom of a lead. As a Seer I know that we must be grateful for small miracles in our lives.
But all is not lost because we are on "The Sea of Joy". I rather like this one. It has some life and could have been included on a Traffic album like "Low Spark". However, that being said, Mr. Winwood does himself (and us) no favors by writing this in a bad key for himself. I've always liked the sound of his vocals, but his voice is straining here to hit the notes. I am advising honey and no speaking for three days to get up to snuff. That Metamorpho-always willing to help.
We conclude with "Do What You Like", a long, floating, noodling of a song that gives everyone the spotlight leading up to the famed Ginger Baker drum solo. Well, after all, he wrote the song. I sort of like this jam though. They finally let Baker and Grech shine just when I was beginning to get worried....about the time the doorknob broke.
In conclusion, is this the best thing these musicians have ever done? The answer is no. Are there some fine and plausible musical substance that would make this a worthy find? Definitely. Anything Clapton and Winwood get involved with is definitely worth a look see. But a super-group? Well........almost.
Now it is time to get down from this mountain and get some insect spray. All I need are mosquito bites on my face. After all, I have a public to think of!
Slightly overcooked but far from done--as always-- Metamorpho
Keep the Faith alive.......2007-02-06
Blind Faith (1969) Blind Faith's first and only studio album.
After Clapton had failed to recruit ex-Traffic mastermind Steve Winwood into Cream quick enough, the power trio split. However, all was not lost. What formed from the ashes was a tiny taste of what Cream with the addition of Winwood might have sounded like. Along with God guitarist Clapton and keyboard monster Winwood was ex-Cream dummer Ginger Baker and ex-Family bassist Rick Grech, who left Family mid-tour to join the group. The end product was one of the greatest classic rock/psychedelic/jazz/folk albums ever released. It's a shame that this is all we get.
The album starts off with Winwood's "Had to Cry Today", a beautiful, wistful song headed by a killer guitar riff. This epic only leads into what is probably the group's best known song, another Winwood classic called "Can't Find My Way Home". The acoustic guitar along with Winwood's soft, haunting vocals make this one of the greatest classic rock songs ever conceived. It then moves on to a wondeful cover of "Well All Right", where the band really lets loose and does some neat jamming.
Next is my personal favorite from the album, and one of my all-time favorite songs; Clapton's "Presence of the Lord". The organ and bass line here are so amazing, and Clapton's fuzziness on the guitar only sucks you into an eternal dreamworld. This is an absolutely gorgeous song, and it's amazing that it's not more popular than it was. Next is another Winwood song, "Sea of Joy". This one also has a very memorable riff, and the chorus to the song is nothing short of great. The album rounds out with Ginger Baker's epic "Do What You Like", where he shows the world why he is one of its greatest drummers. Clapton and Grech also enjoy interesting solos on this song, too.
Overall, this band could have gone on to do amazing things, but while on tour, Clapton became more and more obsessed with the sounds of the Band and Delaney and Bonnie. He split at the end of the tour and went on to bigger and better things, while Winwood and Grech would join Baker in his "Air Force" (another incredible album), and later, for Winwood, a reunion with Traffic. If you are a fan of classic rock, of Cream, of Clapton or Winwood, do NOT miss out on this. It's a very moving and spiritual journey, and one of the finest recordings from that era.

How do you put together a soundtrack for a comedy about witches--'90s style? Well, if she's young and her name is Sabrina, you compile an album of relentless teen pop and R&B hits. But if your witches are a little more mature (and, perhaps, suburban), as in Practical Magic, you use a different formula. And the brew found here is actually a good mix: Faith Hill gets as much play (one track) as Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell. Mitchell's "A Case of You" is simply great, and Bran Van 3000's "Everywhere" fits the folk-pop mold nicely, as does upstart Michelle Lewis's "Nowhere and Everywhere." The guys are the oddities here: Elvis Presley's "Always on My Mind" and Harry Nilsson's "Coconut" give this disc some fun quirks. --Jim Young

All the women in my family own and love this CD. The music fits the movie very well, and you can't help but enjoy the soundtrack. It is so special that my daughter is even using the instrumentals in her wedding!! I highly recommend this one.
Inspiring and Emotional.......2006-11-19
First of all I loved the movie and watch it all the time, I purchased the CD after the movie came because of the wonderful songs and music. I never tire of this CD, and agree with another woman's comment, that all women should own this CD... The music is soothing, relaxing and emotionally charged. I had this CD stolen out of my vehicle and can't live without it, so I am purchasing it again for the 4th time! That is how much I listen to it!

After immeasurable success in the U.S., Faith Hill finally comes to Europe, and There You'll Be is a sort of catch-up for the best bits we may have missed along the way (or, in other words, a greatest hits collection for the uninitiated). A dozen songs which map the path of the Georgia singer, it includes the massive hit for which she has come to be known over here--"There You'll Be," from the Pearl Harbor soundtrack--together with some pop anthems like "The Way You Love Me (Love to Infinity Mix)." However, the style she delivers most convincingly is that of her roots in country, with "Let Me Let Go", "Piece of My Heart," and "You Give Me Love" from the earlier albums being the clear highlights of this collection. --Gunther Matejka

Not Good Enough.......2007-04-07
I write this knowing how much I love to hear Faith Hill sing , and knowing how much of her Music that I own , and have listened to over the
years , this supposed to be Greatest Hits Ablum that leaves out some of her Hits ,adds these New Songs does away with what the Album is Called , and suppose to be , "The Best OF Faith Hill" , I DON'T THINK SO!
Just the good stuff.......2007-03-09
I am not a huge country western fan, but there are certain artists I really like. I like when an artist comes out with a greatest hits CD that really is filled with greastest hits. If you are a Faith Hill fan, but want to buy just one CD, then buy this one.
Very Disappointed.......2007-03-08
Thought it would be a greatest hits CD of all her original music. Would not have purchased if I had heard CD before I ordered it.
Great Compilation.......2006-11-12
This import CD by Faith Hill is a great compilation of her hits, it also includes never before released songs such as "over the rainbow" which she performs with great diversity. Although a little pricy, well worth the money for true Faith Hill fans.
Sounds Good but It is miss something!.......2006-09-16
This cd sounds good but it is missing some of her best songs! 'It Matters To Me' is my fav and it is not to be found on Faith Hill's Best of! She has some good ones with Tim McGraw also not on this cd! So I would wait!!!!!!!!

This is a great cd. I have to say, I love all of the songs on it. They are wonderful songs to walk (exercise) with; sometimes I find myself dancing.
I Can Only Imagine.......2007-03-26
I love this album. It's great to have on in the background while you're pottering around the house 'cause it's 'easy-listening'. Of course, when it comes to my favourite Mercy Me song I blare the sound!
I Can Only Imagine: Ultimate Power Anthems of the Christian Faith .......2007-02-01

I Can Only Imagine.......2007-01-16
I was very disapointed with the sound and the voices singing on this cd. I ordered it because I heard the song I Can Only Imagine and it was wonderful, however thie singing on this cd seems to be out of tone, sounds like amatures singing and I hate it. I do not like the entire cd. how sad as I spent good money thinking I was getting a quility of good singers.
Great CD!.......2007-01-09
I bought this for the title song, but it's always great to have this kind of CD with favorite songs. Well arranged and a good value for the money.

"Well I guess it would be nice, if I could touch your body...." Given George Michael's restroom hi-jinks in early 1998, those words from "Faith" sound pretty funny, but they sounded fresh and exciting blasting out of car radios all over America in 1987. Michael's stunning solo debut (after four years in the lightweight British duo Wham!) sold seven million copies and yielded six Top 10 hits. Some of those were among the decade's best pop, including the hiccuping title track, the heartfelt ballad "Father Figure" and the wicked R&B groove of "I Want Your Sex." Unlike so much 1980s treacle, this disc hold ups surprisingly well--even if Michael hasn't always done so himself. --Michael Ruby

Great sound!.......2007-07-22
This was purchased for my daughter who recently starting becoming a George Michael fan and now plays this everyday!
Faithful.......2007-07-05
It has been more than 20 years, since a pop gem turned his life from a bubble gum teen idol, into a soulful legend. Yet, with all of George Michael's longevity, we've often forgotten about how diverse and deep his music has been with so many listeners, and instead focused in on his problems with substance abuse, and his troubles with his personal life. Nevertheless, with so many of the artists being more about gloss and partying like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, George has often been discredited as a forgone guilty pleasure. But what he accomplished away from his era with Wham!, really remains timeless.
George Michael's solo debut record, Faith contains music that still shows that has been about substance, rather than style, but delivers a unique mixture of both. This album has a mix of soul, rock and gospel all in one. The album works very nicely, and still is great to listen to. The songs have definitely shown that they have gotten better with age. The record includes some great tracks including the provocative and dominant I Want Your Sex, the #1 smashes Father Figure, the dance hit Monkey, the soulful and somber One More Try, and his often overlooked Kissing A Fool. The album really delivers uniquely, despite the fact that George hasn't been able to succeed here in America, the way he has thrived overseas in the 90's and the 2000 decade.
Nevertheless, Faith was recently declared as a part of the 200 Definitive Albums Of All Time according to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and what George Michael has still shined over the years. I just hope people in this generation, keep appreciating the craftmanship of his music and feel for the songs. I absolutely recommend this for anyone who hasn't yet heard his music at all. It still shows that he will always have faith, and delivers.

From the suggestive series of photos in the CD's packaging to the aerobicized dance-floor workouts within, Faith Hill refuses to concede an inch of crossover dominance to Shania Twain. Except for a seductive duet with husband Tim McGraw on "Let's Make Love" and an occasional pinch of fiddle or steel guitar, there's little here to characterize Hill as a country artist. As pop, the results range from pretty ("Breathe," "Love Is a Sweet Thing") to pretty slight ("I Got My Baby," "If My Heart Had Wings") to borderline inane ("Bringing Out the Elvis," the voyeuristic twist of "The Way You Love Me"). Though Hill's version of Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind" is admirably understated, too much of the album substitutes surface dazzle for emotional depth. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Great Cover Photo, if Only the Songs were as Good.......2007-07-06
Faith slipped on this album from previous albums. This definitely has a stronger pop/lite rock flavor than previous work, with even some jazz hints. Not that it's bad to try a different genre. The actual songs themselves, however, try to much to be sweet and treacly. They are not substantial or inventive either. Here are the only real standouts:
Way You Love Me - spirited country/pop [like I said, genre is not the problem] tune. Best song on this album.
If My Heart Had Wings - spirit and force
There Will Come a Day - actually inspirational and spiritual
The album doesn't suck, but there's no real enthusiasm about popping it into the player.
Sounds Good.......2006-07-07
I Don't have this cd by faith (i have cry which is a great one) but it sounds good except for two one i can't remember and brining out the elvis not that they are bad songs (i believe that there is no such thing as bad music) i just don't like them. i like faith's pop and country sides. but anyway it sounds good
Shocked.......2006-06-14
I purchased the CD. I own other CD's by Faith Hill. The best way to evaluate satisfaction is to ask the question: "If you had another chance to order the CD being evaluated, would you order the CD. My reply is no. The voice and the background music do not sound like the Faith Hill that I hear in the CD's that I own.
amazing record, still her best.......2006-05-19
I didn't know anything bout Faith before i picked this CD, and that's where my love to modern-country music started its life. I was really impressed at how great this album sounded and still does. The first track "What's in in for me" immediately cristalyzes the paradigm of still-not too much country, not pop either. The following song are just as good as the first one, and of course "Breathe" is a stand-out track, which sounds amazing no matter how many tome you're listening to it. And the perfection if the song also lies in the other mixes, which are not less good than the original. However, the inclusion of silly "Bringing out the Elvis" sounds like a mistake on here, but a small one, which doesn't spoil the general listenability of the record. That said, it's still her best album, which stays in the same league with "Come on Over" and and maybe even better.
I'm not a country fan and Oh I love Faith!.......2006-03-17
My little sister had this cd years ago and the song "There will Come a Day" used to bring me to tears. As a Christian, I would reccomend getting the cd just to have that song. However, I also love the rest of the CD. It has Faith's country flair but it isnt too brassy. I love it and bought myself a copy. It's a cd that's never leaving my collection.

As the lead female voice of family gospel band the Staple Singers, Mavis Staples has shown more than a little faith across four decades, using her voice as a powerful instrument in the battle for civil rights and the eternal struggle for salvation (as well as pop hits). Here, on her first CD of new material since 1993's Prince-produced The Voice, the 64-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer seems relaxed. That's why acoustic treatments of tunes like "Step Into the Light" and the Blind Lemon Jefferson tribute "A Dying Man's Plea" sound so good wrapped around her warm honey-and-grits tones, with slide guitars and fiddles following the easy flow of her melodies. Nonetheless, there's a simmering intensity to her performances, though she eases for sweet recollections in the uplifting biography of her late father Roebuck, "Pop's Recipe." Yet Staples always remains strong enough to render the disc's overabundance of lite-funk arrangements irrelevant. --Ted Drozdowski

Staples is spiritually and musically convicted.......2006-04-02
Mavis Staples
Have A Little Faith Alligator
On her first album of new material since 1993, Mavis Staples proves to be, spiritually and musically, convicted. She still has her instantly recognizable and dynamic voice. It distinctively features throughout 12 songs on her Alligator debut. All are uplifting and contain encouraging messages about being the best you can be, equal rights, helping each other, spirituality in God, believing in your dreams, and keeping the faith. Her unheralded backing band, features her sister, Yvonne, on background vocals. The production is very polished.
"Pops Recipe" is rather funky and is an homage to Mavis' father. He had 13 siblings, dropped out of school to pick cotton yet became a gospel and soul legend. Pops taught his children to ("Accept responsibility / don't subscribe to bigotry, hypocrisy, duplicity.") "Ain't No Better Than You" contains equally strong lyrics such as ("Change will come but not overnight / it's the waiting / that's so frustrating.") The slow and deeply moving, "God Is Not Sleeping", is beautiful and brilliant. Several numbers mix gospel with R&B such as "I Still Believe In You" and "There's A Devil On The Loose". The latter describes the evil that is brought to individuals and society. The Chicago Music Community Choir's gospel backing vocals are astounding on "In Times Like These".
The meaningful lyrics to these inspirational songs are a stark reminder of the strife's and struggles that many have to endure. Yet, this is healing music -- designed to help our hurting and deeply suffering world. Like an open door, Staples' powerful voice and contemporary musical arrangements are welcoming so that you don't miss out on a lost opportunity. For 51 minutes, she instills faith in the deepest cynic and provides hope for the broken-hearted.
-- Tim Holek
pure enjoyment.......2005-09-02
There's a reason Mavis and this CD won four W.C. Handy Awards...it is a terrific disc. The songs are uplifting and inspiring. The production is immaculate. The background musicianship is superb. And, of course, there is that strong, angelic voice. No reason to look further...buy this CD.

Faith No More are virtually impossible to categorize; they blend metal and rap elements in a mix that becomes seamless on The Real Thing, whose hit single, "Epic," is a perfect combination of these disparate genres. Other high points are the thrashy "Surprise! You're Dead!," an excellent cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," the funk-layered-with-keyboards "Falling to Pieces," and the soft but spooky "Zombie Eaters." With the addition of vocalist Mike Patton, the band secured a highly talented frontman and skilled lyricist. The Real Thing is one of those rare albums that is impossible to quantify but astoundingly good. More accessible than the follow-up Angel Dust, it's also the first album new Faith No More listeners should get. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
badly in need of re-mastering .......2007-06-19
The album itself is without question five stars. The one star is for the HORRIBLE sound quality.
What is it?.......2007-01-10
Sure, this album has been out a long time, and it may even seem dated if you weren't born when it came out. But it's so damn good. I hadn't heard it in more than 10 years and just wanted to check it out again, to see if it really was as good as i remember. The short answer: you damn straight it's good. It's freaky-deaky! Heavy and soft, loud and quiet, chocolate and kiwis.
Go get it.
Faith restored.......2006-12-24
In the midst of near band melt down and free for all, FNM fired their lead singer and brought in friend Mike Patton to pen lyrcis to their album that would be known as The Real Thing. Mixing Mike's love for vocal ranges and styles (everything from rapping to just rocking out like a true rock frontman) with the band's most accessible sound to date (and looking back now, THE most accessible period), FNM created a staple sound/album of the alternative scene, mixing some true music styles from rock to rap to a pre-acid like jazz sound. While some reviewers will try to sit there and say this is THE ALT ALBUM and Nirvana's Nevermind is a St. Anger for it's genre(?), FNM's The Real Thing is one of the cornerstones of the Alternative genre that evolved into Grunge (sorry but while TRT is great... Nevermind DID change an entire rock world by going back to the roots of rock that were long forgotten and bogged down by hair spray and power ballads, destorying what was left in the wake of GNR's AFD).
There is nothing much to say but Faith No More's The Real Thing is just a rocking album for the masses.
It's still fun!.......2006-11-10
I LOVED Faith No More back in the day and owned most of their albums. My old cassette version of this got eaten in the player and I didn't replace it for the longest time. Finally got around to getting it on CD and realized how much I missed the band and the album! They were pretty groundbreaking for the time. Saw them in concert and loved them even more. I can't talk all technicla with you about styles, revolutionary sounds and whatnot, I just know what I like!
One word, Genius........2006-09-11
This album is pure genius. The blend of music that this album has is simply out of this world. To here the totally different contrasts on the album, listen to the funk "Falling to Pieces" and to the metal and darkness of "The Real Thing". This truly a masterpiece of an album. If you like music, i recommend this album. One of the best of all time and CERTAINLY FOM's best.
