This is one of the hottest ones of the series. Enough said.

1. P. diddy feat. Loon, Mario Winans and Ginuwine - I Need A Girl Part 2 - hot collabo, but should have had Usher on this one too. 9/10
2. Nelly - #1 - hot song; too bad it's a diss to KRS-One. Also on "Nellyville" and the "Training Day" soundtrack. 10/10
3. Ja Rule - Down 4 U - don't care at all for Ja. 0.5/10
4. Cam'ron feat. Juelz Santana - Oh Boy - extremely hot song; still one of my favorite collabos. Also on "Come Home With Me". 10/10
5. Scarface feat. Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel- Guess Who's Back - don't really care for thsi song; each have had much better songs. 5/10
6. Busta Rhymes feat. P. Diddy and Pharrell - Pass The Courvoisier Part 2 - hot collabo; greatest for Busta Rhymes yet. 9/10

12. N.O.R.E. - Nothin' - hot joint; his hottest in his career. Also on "God's Favorite". 8/10
13. Foxy Brown - Stylin' - I don't like Foxy Brown. 5/10
14. Styles P. - Good Times - hot joint about gettin high; and "teenage soul", Styles P did NOT ruin Akon's "Locked Up"; if it wasn't for P, it would have sucked. Also on "A Gangster and A Gentleman". 10/10
15. Jermaine Dupri feat. Snoop Dogg and P. Diddy - Welcome To Atlanta (Remix) - this song sucks and doesn't make any sense cuz only JD is from Atlanta. The version with only Ludacris is much better and actually is a collabo with ONLY ATL rappers. 2/10
16. Ludacris - Roll Out - speakig of Ludacris, this is a hot song. If Snoop or Diddy were to be on this song, it would suck. Also on "Word Of Mouf". 10/10
17. Ying Yang Twins - Say I Yi Yi - hot summer anthem; their greatest single to date. Also on "Return of the Ying Yang". 9/10
18. The Clipse feat. N.O.R.E., Baby and Lil Wayne - Grindin' (Remix) - The normal versiopn is better, but this is hot. Also on "Lord Willin'"8/10

Like every Source album, it has a couple fillers and could have used much better songs, but it was alright. It could have used:

(13) Foxy Brown "Stylin'" D+ I don't really like Foxy Brown.

(14) Styles P. "Good Times" F I hate Styles P! He ruined Akon's great song Locked Up!

(15) Jermaine Dupri feat. P. Diddy, Snoop Dogg and Murphy Lee "Welcome To Atlanta" (REMIX) D- This song has no point!

(16) Ludacris "Rollout (My Business) A Great song from Luda!

(17) Ying Yang Twins "Say I Yi Yi" F A rap song with no point that is just irritating.

(18) Clipse feat. N.O.R.E., Baby and Lil' Wayne "Grindin'" (REMIX) B- Good, but didn't like the remix much.

Overall Grade - D- Almost an F, this complication sucks. I'd get a better version of this series, because this is the weakest yet.

Hip Hop "Hits" in 2002 .......2004-10-15

"Hip Hop Hits Vol. 6" is supposed to be a summation of rap music in 2002, gathering BOTH the biggest AND the best hits. While the album does contain a number of huge, quality hits, there is also alot of lesser known songs as well. But a saving grace is that some of the those song are good and worth listening to. A song by song analysis:
(1) P. Diddy feat. Ginuwine, Loon, Mario Winans & Tammy Ruggieri "I Need A Girl Part II" A-. A terrific R&B/rap track with a positive tone to it. Five artists may seem like too many, but everyone is giving a good amount of time to create this blissful track off one of the few remix albums that doesn't suck.
(2) Nelly "#1" A-. The song was over a year old and "Hot In Herre" and "Dilemma" were MUCH bigger hits. That said, this is still a terrific rap song with alot of energy and some biting lyrics. Nelly makes some good points about himself and his life.
(3) Ja Rule, Ashanti, Charli Baltimore & Vita "Down 4 U" B. Feels more like a sampler for Murder Inc. than a song, yet still has some charm and an easing beat. As a sampler; Ashanti really shines through and everyone else does good with what they're given.
(4) Cam'ron feat. Juelz Santana "Oh Boy" B+. It's not that appealing the first time, it grows on you though. The material is a little standard, yet many parts, the chorus in particular, take onsome depth and strike inside.
(5) Scarface feat. Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel "Guess Who's Back" C. Again, Scarface thinks he is still on top when he is not. True he is a good rapper, but his work seems standard, plain and outdated in these inventive rap days.
(6) Busta Rhymes feat. P. Diddy & Pharrell "Pass Courvoisier" (REMIX) B+. There's no difference between Parts I & II. OK, this is a pretty good club track from some of the best rappers in the industry. It's fun to listen to and is a darn infectious track.
(7) Beanie Sigel & Freeway "Roc The Mic" C+. The song is kinda fun a has a memorable beat, but beyond that there is just nothing. A slick production can't make this song work alone.
(8) Eminem "Without Me" A. Easily Shady's most satirical, funniest and biting work yet. His "razor tounged lyrics" find the right targets, address a number of "issues" and make good point all to a hilarious entertaining results.
(9) Big Tymers "Still Fly" B-. A huge song in '02, not the best though. I really liked "#1 Stunna" and found this to be a disapointment by comparison. It doesn't offer much and I expected more from the duo.
(10) Fat Joe feat. Ja Rule & Ashanti "What's Luv?" A. A perfect club and dance track. Impossible not to enjoy and offers perfect collaboration for Fat Joe and Ashanti. The song captures interest right from the opening.
(11) Benzino feat. G. Dep & Fabolous "Bootie" (REMIX) C-. The song is absolutly nothing. By the time it actually starts to be going somewhere, it's over. Just another simplistic, self promotion track from Benzino.
(12) N.O.R.E "Nothin'" A-. So simple, yet so enjoyable at the same time. N.O.R.E. has a terrific voice and the "arabian style" background provides a very catchy tune. It just may run a little long, but still keeps the listener's interest.
(13) Foxy Brown "Stylin'" B+. Its definetly not the high point of her career, but it still remains an infectious, fast paced dance track. Pretty enjoyable entertainment.
(14) Styles P. "Good Times" B. The song is kinda good, it just lacks that special something. It contains a well used interpolation, but is rather sleep inducing and standard.
(15) Jermaine Dupri feat. P. Diddy, Snoop Dogg and Murphy Lee "Welcome To Atlanta" (REMIX) B+. Looses some of its meaning in the REMIX because the original version was just JD and Ludacris, who are both from Altanta. Still, the other artists do a nice job of representing NYC, LA and St. Louis as well.
(16) Ludacris "Rollout (My Business) A. The material seems standard, yet Luda finds a perfect vehicle with his southern style and some humorous lyrics. It's clearly one of his best and one of 2001/2's as well.
(17) Ying Yang Twins "Say I Yi Yi" D. A rap song with zero substance that is just degrating to the ears. There is no reason to spend anytime listening to this substandard work.
(18) Clipse feat. N.O.R.E., Baby and Lil' Wayne "Grindin'" (REMIX) C+. Catchy standard material that became a fairly big hit. Atleast the skill of the artists keep it from being a total waste and offer some talent.
Bottom Line: ***. It's a close call, but I recommend the album for the really good tracks and the overall flow of material. It's just insane that they passed on great hits like "Gangsta Lovin'", "Always On Time" and "One Mic" for lesser songs. It represents the start of Benzino's reign of terror over The Source. It's a mess that every rap fan should sample.

Aint nobody hatin, this cd is garbage.......2006-03-06

With the exception of Missy, and Lil kim track, this whole cd will make a great coaster at best. The only who can truly enjoy this album is someone who has a one track mind for partyin' only. This is no hip hop compilation. Straight dance to the fullest. Pop for the most part. And tracks of hits that i didn't even no was hits, by a rapper almost no one cares about. Even though I do like some of what he puts out but still, addin yourself on hits album just make people diss him more.

This is not the best "The Source Hits" compilation, but it is not the worst, either. Just had a couple filler tracks.

1. Ludacris - Act A Fool - The cut from the 2 Fast 2 Furious soundtrack. 9/10
2. Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell - Beautiful - all right collabo; I thought "Drop It Like It's Hot" and "Let's Get Blown" were much better though. Also on Snoop Dogg's "Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Boss". 7/10
3. 2Pac feat. Anthony Hamilton - Thugz Mansion - great song, even better than the version with Nas. Also on 2Pac's "Better Dayz". 10/10
4. Nelly - Air Force Ones - a rap song about shoes; very catchy. Also on "Nellyville". 9/10
5. Lil' Kim feat. Mr. Cheeks - The Jump Off - another Neptunes-produced track on an album of The Source. Also on Lil' Kim's "La Bella Mafia". 9/10
6. Fabolous feat. Mike Shorey and Lil' Mo - Can't Let You Go - don't like Fabolous so I skip this song. Also on "Street Dreams". 2/10
7. Ray Benzino feat. Mario Winans - Rock The Party - don't like either of the artists, but this is a decent song. Also on Benzino's "Redemption". 8/10
8. DMX - Where the Hood At - great song, and it's too bad he retired. There is one extra verse in the song for those who only saw the version on MTV. Also on "Grand Champ". 10/10
9. Bone Crusher feat. Jadakiss, Cam'ron and Busta Rhymes - Never Scared (Remix) - great song; hotter than the normal version, where I only liked T.I.'s part. Also on Bone Crusher's "Attenchun". 9/10
10. David Banner feat. Lil' Flip - Like A Pimp - this song introduced David Banner to the world and helped spark the career of Lil' Flip. Also on David Banner's "Mississippi: The Album". 10/10
11. Ja Rule feat. Ashanti - Mesmerize - I could care less about this song. Also on Ja Rule's "The Last Temptation". 3/10
12. LL Cool J - Luv U Better - bangin joint; made a hot return that year. Also on "10". 10/10
13. Panjabi MC feat. Jay-Z - Beware (Remix) - this song is so bad that the remix does not even save it. 3.5/10
14. Missy Elliott - Work It - this song gets annoying after awhile. Also on "Under Construction". 1/10
15. Untouchables feat. Ray Benzino - Untouchable - another filler track to conclude the album; I listen to "Luv U Better" and then stop playing it. 2/10

This album could have used better songs than the ones that I gave low ratings to. Examples being:

Get it For Hamilton/2Pac's 'Mansion'...........2005-01-18

....but stick around for Missy's Work It, St Lunatik's Uhhhr Force Ones (it's hilarious), Luda, Snoop w/ Pharrell, and the much maligned Benzino(with Mario)--I never heard that cut til I got the CD. I am not a Lil Kim fan, but her Jump Off fits well with the rest of the cuts on the CD. Get it because you like sound, whether it's so-called 'old' or so-called 'new'. Music doesn't get old: you always hear something new or something you didn't notice in a tune.

1.Ludacris"Act A Fool" A- Truly not the best Luda could offer, but an awesome dance track with an insane beat.

2.Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell and Uncle Charlie Wilson"Beautiful" B Ok, I guess Pharell didn't totally ruin the song, but he made it much worse.

3.2Pac feat. Anthony Hamilton"Thugz Mansion" A+ Anything with 2 Pac is awesome.

4.Nelly feat. Murphy Lee,Ali and Kyjuan"Air Force Ones" D- All Nelly does is talk about his shoes. Very annoying too. Also, a bit overrated.

5.Lil'Kim feat. Mr.Cheeks"The Jump Off" B+ Good track, but Magic Stick blows it to hell.

6.Fabolous feat. Lil'Mo and Mike Shorey"Can't Let You Go" A- A nice, soothing, and underrated track.

7.Benzino feat. Mario Winians"Rock The Party" F Benzino? On a rap CD? Not gonna work.

8.DMX"Where The Hood At" C- Not a very good track, especially for DMX.

9.Bone Crusher feat. Jadakiss and Busta Rhymes"Neva Scared" F Is this a joke? It's just yelling and screaming.

10.David Banner feat. Lil'Flip"Like A Pimp" B Good, but not the best he can offer.

11.Ja Rule feat. Ashanti"Mesmerize" A- Not as good as previous Ja Rule/Ashanti songs, but it's good.

12.LL Cool J"Luv U Better" F Not only is this song annoying, but it was never a hit.

13.Panjabi MC feat. Jay-Z"Beware...(Jay-Z Remix)" D+ Just more yelling.

14.Missy Elliot"Work It"A+ A crisp classic.

15.Untouchables feat. Benzino"Untouchable" F Boring Benzino? Why is he on this CD so much? So, he's the editor for the magazine. How does he think he can rap?

Overall Grade - C- This could of been mmmmmmmuuuuuuccccchhhh better. One of the weakest of the series, but not completely terrible.

Good compilation.......2004-10-10

I really am just writing this to clarify that the song titled "Whatcha Gonna Do?" (#12) that is listed as DMX is NOT DMX... any hip hop fan can tell you that this is Jayo Felony. How that got confused, I have no idea. That being said, this is a good compilation for starting with late 90's hip hop.

Top Hits of '98!.......2001-02-19

This compilation features hip hop hits that climbed the charts in 1998. This album starts you off with a Latino hit called "Still Not a Player" by Big Punisher (R.I.P.). Which was everyone's jam. "Money Ain't a Thing" by Jermaine Dupri feat. Jay-Z which is featured on both JD's & Jay-Z's album. Next there's the L.O.X.'s best song they ever made called "Money, Power, Respect" featuring DMX & Lil' Kim, tight beat. "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)" by Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz has gotten so much airplay. Maybe it's their best song too. Track 5 is 2Pac's "love song" called "Do For Love". E-40 has A LOT of slow songs and "Hope I Don't Go Back" is one of them. But it's a nice joint. The next track will get you pumped-up from those last 2 songs, it's called "Party ain't a Party" by Queen Pen w/ Markell Riley, Mr. Cheeks, Nutta Butta, & Freaky Tah. Busta Rhymes will make you "Turn it up" on the next track. "Get At Me Dog" is DMX's first single with a tight beat. (which feature's Sheek of The L.O.X.) I'm not hatin', but Snoog Dogg sounds weak on this good song called "Still a G Thing"; a sequel to "Nuttin but a G Thing". The 2nd verse of the hook in "It's Alright are not for lil' kids ears. "It's NOT Alright" Ya heard? Then there's the most pumped-up song on the compilation called "Watcha Gonna Do". This song is tight! You'll be boppin' heads to this one. Tracks 13-18 are the weak tracks except #14; it's "N.O.R.E." by Noreaga, which should'eve been put with the good tracks (#1-12). Overall, I gave this CD 4 stars cause of tracks 13, 15-18. If you loved the rap music of '98, this one's for you.

Whats happening to these collections?.......2007-02-19

These compilations get worse and worse every year. Bad enough garbage rappers is always puttin out garbage. So we're forced to purchase their crap twice? I'll admit that I do like some of Benzino's work, but I hate the fact he forces his tracks on hit albums, when he hasn't had a hit in years. The best track for me is Mobb deep's got it twisted. The source could have pulled tracks from anywhere to make this album at the very least luke warm. Two thumbs down!

Crap.......2005-06-22

Words can't describe how bad this is. However, I read reveiws for volume 8, and the reviewer pretty mucyh describes what I think, and I will quote him.....

"Well. Seems like these talentless, gold-toothed imbeciles are really getting rich from churning out this junk faster than Detroit churns out cars because dumb pre-teens and wiggers keep buying into this fad... so I'm going to cash in on it! Quick! Before it dies out! I'm going to make my OWN unlistenable, wretched pop-rap album!

So here I go, with the steps:

1.) Pick out stupid, laughable moniker (IE "Chingy", "Nelly", etc.). Hmm... how about "Dippety D"? I know, I know, it sounds like a Warner Brothers cartoon... but hey, this is what makes money, so who am I to argue?

2.) Go to the mall and buy $500 worth of oversized South Pole and Mecca clothing.

3.) Get a friend with an old electronic keyboard. Actually, scratch the friend part. I can do it myself.

4.) Pick out one of the 16 loaded beats. Choose a tempo.

5.) Put it on, and record myself mumbling over it. Subject matter must not exceed the range of "munny, secks, thugstaz, wummenzz". Oh yeah, gotta curse a lot too. My title track shall be me just endlessly bleating "DIPPETY DIPPETY DIPPETY D!!!!"

6.) When I write the words/lyrics, misspell everything horribly. Hmm. What's a good album title? I know! "Dippity D Duz Da Derrrty Deed".

7.) Shoot the album cover. Wear the aforementioned wigger clothing, scowl like an idiot, and show off my "blang" (fake).

8.) Release, sell the single to MTV, and become a millionaire overnight! It's that easy! AND it requires NO TALENT WHATSOEVER! Those of you clamoring for the "No" button below, wait 'til you hear my new single, "For Sheezy My Wheezy"! It'll soon be blasting at a local school dance near you!

No. Forget it. I'm not going to do any of that. If I make an album, it'll be of my OWN musical merit. I'll actually put some effort into it, and make something I can take pride in.

This one could easily be the best of the volumes. Even though some of the tracks i don't listen to anymore I wont give it less then a five. My favorite tracks are; The joint(EPMD), Hay(Crucial Conflict), Triumph(WU),and Whuteva man(Redman). Cop this if you don't got it.

The Best Single Compilation of Hip Hop Ever.......2005-02-08

I can't believe I found this CD on amazon! My sister had this CD when I was a kid, and I listened to it so much that I scratched the crap out of it. I heard Wu-Tang on my friends' computer the other day, which made me think about this album so I looked for it on here. This is easily the BEST compilation of Hip Hop ever assembled, and includes many good examples of the kind of songs that rappers built off of. The artists on this album are the pioneers of modern hip hop; too bad their predecessors aren't nearly as talented...

The Best Hip Hop Hits Compilation.......2004-06-09

Like many things, The Source's "Hip Hop Hits Volume 1" was the original and the best. The songs on this album are far better than most of the trash that is out there today. Plus, The Source is so biased anymore with the selection, and always throwing in tons of garbage by Benzino that no one has ever even heard. EPMD, LL Cool J, Wyclef and Jay-Z are just a few of the great artists included on this disc. The music on here is from the days when all of the rap artists didnt sound the same and use the same producers like most of them do now. If you want to hear some good rap from the late 1990's, then this is the compilation to get.

This ALBUM Is GREAT it hs classic songs and a great song from The NOTORIOUS BIG, it has most of the hip hop hits of 1997

My favorite RAP compilation.......2002-04-21

This is the best rap comp in my opinion, I had it when i was younger and I played it so much it got scratched. Now, I bought another one and I still jam to the same songs. It has a nice blend of hardcore rap with some poppy ones as well. My favorites are wutang, puffy, bone thugz, and foxy brown. THis cd is perfect for those who like all types of rap, not just certain sounds or beats.

One of the best Source CD's.......2002-07-28

I first bought this CD when it came out, and just when I was getting into the whole Rap/Hip Hop scene. Since then, I've bought a lot of different artists CD's, and save for rappers like Jay-Z,Tupac, Dr. Dre, Redman and Method Man, there aren't that many greats out there. Even lately I'm not too into Jay-Z. But for some real hits, and good beats, this is a CD to get. I still listen to this CD...I first bought it for the Mobb Deep remix, but found surpisingly good songs like DMX's Slippin'. I find that Trina's voice can get grating though if you listen to Nann [Nigga] too much. Overall, a great CD.

A Blowout Must Buy CD!.......2000-04-28

This cd has alot of tight hits including: Nann by Trick Daddy and Who Dat' by J.T. Money. There are too many good songs to name for this cd, those are the biggest I like and I like all the others too. I can practically just listen to the whole cd without stopping it, which usually never happens with other cd's b/c u buy it for about 3 good songs and all the other songs are junk. But this cd has all the Hip Hop Hits that it proclaims. I suggest anyone looking at this review or cd, to buy the cd. It's worth it, definetely! One last word is that you will have no regrets buying this cd at all I think in my own opinion.I am from St. Louie and I am telling ya'll to look out for a new group called NELLY also, there hit single is already out "Country Grammar" and cd soon to be out. I don't hate rap, but this is ridiculous. If you see the Vol.8 of this series, there is a reviewer I like called Eggplant that talked about being a millionaire overnight off of making a hip-pop album, even if you don't have talent, which I agree 110% with. So here's a poem I wrote in its clean version. Enjoy.

Wow there are some serious haters up in here. You got one guy who rated the album a 1 star but when he brakes down the tracks he rated like 8 songs a 10/10 and only like 3 tracks got low ratings. So you saying you love just about every track but it's a 1 star? HATER! It's a great compilation alot of songs will get you amped up. Vol 9 was a little better though. Still better then any other Hip Hop Compilation out.

Hip Hop.......2005-08-09

I'm loving this album. My favorate album I've bought this year. Instead of going out and buying like 15 cd's you can buy this one and have alot of hit songs on one album. The tracklisting here is not the same as the album I bought at Best Buy. All these songs are on here but the order is different. One of the few albums I can just throw in and listen to every track from begining to end. If you love hip hop you will love this album.

Coulda been Better.......2005-08-08

This Source compilation had by far the worst selection of songs. At least they listened to my Source 9 review (I'm formerly known as Eminem Fan; long story) and but "Lean Back" on it, but could have used "Drop It Like It's Hot" and Lloyd Banks' "On Fire".

1. Trick Daddy feat. Lil' Jon and Twista - Let's Go - Good way to start a crappy soundtrack. I loved this song and played 100 times a day before MTV released the video, and I STILL love this song!!! 10/10
2. Pitbull - Dammit Man - That's what this song got me thinking; Dammit Man, That Sucked! Maybe if it had Culo or Toma. 6/10
3. Geto Boys - Yes Yes Ya'll - This is a good song, but was never a hit. They must be re-introduced to the public eye. 9/10
4. Lil' Wayne - Go DJ - awesome song! This joint got me into Lil' Wheezy. 10/10
5. Juvenile - Nolia Clap - This joint is also hot! If only Juvy was still in Cash Money; if he did songs with the current/improved Cash Money roster now, they would be all kinds of bangers. 9/10
6. Lil' Jon feat. Lil' Scrappy - What U Gon' Do - A crazy with ya boy, Lil' Jon; great pic for this album! 8.5/10
7. Alchemist feat. Mobb Deep - Hold U Down - not really feelin this joint; they made the right decisions going with 50 and Eminem. 5/10
8. Benzino - Wide Body - OMG! Another Benzino on The Source; his only good song is the Toy Soldiers-response song "Look Into My Eyes". 2/10
9. Fabolous - Breathe - great banger and a classic; F-A-B killed it on this one. 10/10

12. Jim Jones - Certified Gangstas - This version sucks! IT IS NOT the video remix version featuring The Game; it's the version on his album. 3/10; if it was the one featuring The Game, 9/10
13. Ciara feat. Petey Pablo - Goodies - response to Petey's "Freek A Leek"; I loved Ciara until I found out that she was originally a man. 7.5/10
14. Petey Pablo - Vibrate - this song was never a hit; it's probably only on here because it's after "Goodies". But still a good song. 8/10
15. C-Murder feat. BG - this was not a hit either, and it sucks. Rappers who have been to jail do not put out great albums or singles; let's hope Tony Yayo's "Thoughts of a Predicate Felon" is an exception. 2/10
16. Benzino feat. Scarface - What's Really Hood - never got to this one; after track 11, I stop playing it. 0/10

This one can use a lot of work, and much better songs, such as:

I returned this...it's crap! It doesn't have Luda, Gwen Stefani, or even Em on it. Eamon's not on it either. Instead, they put stupid Fat Joe on here. Definitely don't buy this, it's terrible!

Best history of hip hop CD available.......2001-07-10

Excellent anthology that covers the first years of hip hop/rap better than any other single CD available, with informative liner notes to put it all in context. The people who put this together have a good sense of history and including material from so many labels is a big plus. Everyone may have a favorite track that could have been added, but you can't fault what's here, although "Rapper's Delight" is the 4-minute-plus single edit and not the longer 12" version.

What a fun collection of classic hip-hop tracks! The two biggest classics are Rapper's Delight and Planet Rock (Many credit these two songs for starting the craze around rap), but there are tons of other hits from artists like Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Salt 'N Pepa, LL Cool J, Rob Base and tons more. This is a blast to listen to. A good companion buy would be Millenium Hip-Hop Party, which has almost every major hit not included on this album, but with only one or two repeats. This should definately be purchased by any hip-hop fan. It's a part of American musical history.

I would give this more than one star, if I liked more than 2 to 3 tracks. The purpose of these compilations is to enjoy all the best music from an artist album of that year. But what if thier best is their worst? The only artist who was worth my time, was Gangstarr, Westside Connection, and Ja. But I have those albums and I rather listen to those, then a whole entire album it will take less than 9 mins, to go through the whole thing.

Actually, stratch that; THE WORST! Many of these songs sucked and should have had much better songs. As much as I love rap, this is the worst rap soundtrack I have ever heard.

1. Youngbloodz feat. Lil' Jon - Damn - why does every Southern single have Lil' Jon singing the hook? Eight out of ten times, it flops. (two times it hasn't flopped is "Freek-A-Leek" and Usher's "Yeah"). Also on Youngbloodz' "Drankin Patnaz". 4/10
2. Wyclef - The Industry - Only heard this song once; why is this on a "hits" album? N/A
3. Chingy - Right Thurr - First good song on the whole album. It was a Buzzworthy song, and made Chingy a superstar. Also on "Jackpot". 9/10
4. Young Gunz - Can't Stop, Won't Stop - The beat is very annoying, and their voices make it worse. Also on "Tough Luv" 6.5/10
5. Westside Connection - Gangsta Nation - this is the only real gangsta song on this album. Also on "Terrorist Threats" 10/10
6. Ja Rule - Clap Back - Why is this even on here? I hate Ja and so does everybody else. Also on "Blood In My Eye". 2/10
7. Kanye West - Through The Wire - did not like it at first, and then I loved it; it was a Buzzworthy song. Also on "The College Dropout". 10/10
8. Gang Starr - Skills - never heard this song. N/A
9. J-Kwon - Tipsy - great song; basically the new school version on "Gin and Juice". Also on "Hood Hop". 9/10
10. E-40 feat. The Clipse - never heard this song. N/A

Well. Seems like these talentless, gold-toothed imbeciles are really getting rich from churning out this junk faster than Detroit churns out cars because dumb pre-teens and wiggers keep buying into this fad... so I'm going to cash in on it! Quick! Before it dies out! I'm going to make my OWN unlistenable, wretched pop-rap album!

So here I go, with the steps:

1.) Pick out stupid, laughable moniker (IE "Chingy", "Nelly", etc.). Hmm... how about "Dippety D"? I know, I know, it sounds like a Warner Brothers cartoon... but hey, this is what makes money, so who am I to argue?

2.) Go to the mall and buy $500 worth of oversized South Pole and Mecca clothing.

3.) Get a friend with an old electronic keyboard. Actually, scratch the friend part. I can do it myself.

4.) Pick out one of the 16 loaded beats. Choose a tempo.

5.) Put it on, and record myself mumbling over it. Subject matter must not exceed the range of "munny, secks, thugstaz, wummenzz". Oh yeah, gotta curse a lot too. My title track shall be me just endlessly bleating "DIPPETY DIPPETY DIPPETY D!!!!"

6.) When I write the words/lyrics, misspell everything horribly. Hmm. What's a good album title? I know! "Dippity D Duz Da Derrrty Deed".

7.) Shoot the album cover. Wear the aforementioned wigger clothing, scowl like an idiot, and show off my "blang" (fake).

8.) Release, sell the single to MTV, and become a millionaire overnight! It's that easy! AND it requires NO TALENT WHATSOEVER! Those of you clamoring for the "No" button below, wait 'til you hear my new single, "For Sheezy My Wheezy"! It'll soon be blasting at a local school dance near you!

No. Forget it. I'm not going to do any of that. If I make an album, it'll be of my OWN musical merit. I'll actually put some effort into it, and make something I can take pride in.

This compilation is packed tighter with hits than hoochies in front of the stage at a Cash Money concert. Which makes sense because tastemaking mag The Source enforces hip-hop's chart hegemony through its corporate-controlled coverage--with one notable exception: the Made Men. This Boston-based crew are old pals of David Mays (The Source's publisher) and have been shamelessly supported by said mag for years in spite of their minimal talent. Nepotism, anyone? Fortunately, they don't seem to be getting anywhere, except onto this compilation. Aside from their suspicious inclusion, all the usual Billboard suspects are here, from agitated one-note barker DMX to whiny whitey Eminem. Guilty pleasures like Shyne's incriminating "Bad Boyz" and the Three 6 Mafia's neo-Funky Cold Medina "Sippin' on Some Syrup" share space with two (count 'em) decent tracks: Common's "The Light" and De La Soul's "Oooh." --Cristina Restrepo

This compilation is probably the best. It has a mix of party'in, conscious, and gangsta rap. This album is for everybody. The only track i don't feel is Nelly, I just don't like him period. But other than that these are some of the best tracks of 2000. Others should have made it, but for the most part this a satisfying album.

The New Millenium Of Hip-Hop.......2005-03-31

This was IT: the Golden Age of The Source's "Hip Hop Hits" CDs. This album shows what The Source was before Benzino took over, and drove it straight into the ground. Terrific artists like Eminem and Common, who are passed over on recent albums because of Benzino's feuds, are presented here in top form. Hip-Hop had grown exponentialy by the year 2000; into a dominant force of the music industry. This was and the breakout year; and the biggest AND best hip-hop songs from 2000 are all summed up on this masterpiece.
(1) Nelly "Country Grammar (Hot...)" A. Not only was this Nelly's wonderous debut single, but it was also opened the door for evry "Mid-west rapper". The sound, flow and lyrics are like nothing we've ever heard before and that's what most rap is lacking. Even the chorus, with it's R&B sample, sounds new and refreshing. This is a catchy, light and highly entertaining debut.
(2) Common "The Light" A. Common is hands diwn a true MC. Just like Bone Thugz-N-Harmony and 2Pac, he is able to create rap with message and purpose, yet keep his street credentaials as well. Those who thing all hip-hop is negative should listen to this intelligent rap about how to make a reationship work. A light and refreshing breeze for the genre.
(3) DMX "Party Up (Up In Here)" A-. Everything about this song just plain works. THe beat is menacing, the lyrics are hardcore through out and DMX's flow never steps wrong. DMX may have developed a formula for his music, but it's hard to complian when it works so well. Put this next to "What's My Name" and "Fame", and it's clear to seehow unique his music is.
(4) 504 Boyz "Wobble, Wobble" B-. "Collective rap groups" (i.e. Westside Connection, Cool Breeze) can be very good if the artists mend well. The 504 Boyz though, never quite come together as a group; they all seem to be doing their own thing, and aren't very remarkable as individuals. "Wobble, Wobble" is fun and catchy, but doesn't really stick to memory afterwards.
(5) Shyne feat. Barrington Levy "Bad Boyz" B. To put it simply; Shyne is not a quite ground-breaking rapper, nothing to break the mold. His voice, although somewhat intriging, doesn't really have much of an impact. Yet this song works because of the haunting beat and some interesting vocals from Barrington Levy. Not great, but well worth a listen.
(6) Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg "The Next Episode" A. A perfect example of what "gangsta rap" is really about. The lyricvs are tough and explicit, yet the track is really two rappers having a good time. Brief and catchy; this song makes no intention to have depth, as it provides a showcase for two great rappers at the top of there game.
(7) Big Pun "It's So Hard" B+. Not great work by the late, great Big Pun; but still a very well made track. His voice was one of a kind (despit similarities to "Biggie") and the latin beats could always get the body moving. Although more original material would have been nicer, he still does a good job of personalizing it. Strange that Donell Jones doesn't get top billing; he does the entire chorus.
(8) Trick Daddy feat. Deuce Poppito of 24 Karatz, Trina and Co of the Tre+6 "Shut Up" B-. It's kinda nice the way Trick Daddy ventures into the dance genre, but he doesn't have new material to bring with him. "Shut Up", while catchy (the University Of Florida's marching band sampled it), has no real purpose to it. Fun and glitz on the surface is fine, yet there's nothing at all beneath it.
(9) LL Cool J "Imagine That" A. 15 years into the "rap game", and he still sounds as good as ever. Only LL Cool J can take the most explicit content, and make it sound reaxed ands bouncy. This track is like his "Phenomenon"; a thuggish rap all set to a terrific beat with slick, polished production (by Rockwilder). He may possibly be (as he calls himself) "The Greatest Of All Time".
(10) Eminem "The Real Slim Shady" A+. Here's an artist who always does his own thing and stands out from the crowd. This is a hands-down brilliant rap song with umapologetic, biting, hilarious lyrics that carry a bold message. There will never be another Eminem, and that's a relief. "The Real Slim Shady" is THE best song of 2000, and the still young millenium.
(11) Big Tymers "#1 Stunna" A. The Cash Money Label catupulted to stardom in 1999, but have been very hit or misss since. This is one there best hits; Mannie Fresh's cool beat combines with the perfect flowing lyrics to create a highly enjoyable rap song. Hand's down one of the best works from Big Tymers, Mannie Fresh and Cash Money.
(12) De La Soul feat. Redman "Oooh" A-. Always refreshing to hear an old artist come back on top. De La Soul helped bring rap into the mainstream with "Me, Myself and I" (1989), and bring back that same flavor, over a decade later. The song is a demonstration of what hip-hop is truly about. Redman, of course, adds some flavor to this great "throwback track".
(13) Made Men feat. Twice Thou, Benzino and Mr. Gzus "Holla Back (Holla Boston)" A-. I normally deplore anything from Benzino's posse (Made Men, Untouchables, himself), yet I found this to be highly entertaining. It succeeds mainly due to Hangmen 3's stormin' beat, and non-stop menacing lyrics. No depth to it, but it is definetly gret entertaining. And, no, Boston is not a great place for hip-hop.
(14) Three-6-Mafia feat. UGK and Project Pat "Sippin' On Some Syrup" B-. This isn't one of the stonger tracks on the album; it bring nothing new to the genre and has no meaning at all. Yet the beat is so mesmerizing, and sorta quirky, that the song sticks to memory and becomes very catchy.
(15) Lil' Kim "No Matter What They Say" A-. Female rappers often have a difficult time establishing themselves in the rap world; such is not the case with Lil' Kim. This track presents her a tough, smart thuggish rapper who just as hardcore as the guys. Her flow keeps a consitant fast pace, and her voice has a certain appeal to it. This is what female rap should be.
(16) Method Man/Redman "Y.O.U." B. Compared to Method Man's solo work on "Break Ups 2 Make Ups", this is a pretty lackluster track. It not bad, it just doesn't have trhe flow and quality we expect from Meth and Red; although A Tribe Called Quest's "Electric Relaxation" is used very well. Not a bad song, but underwhelming compared to "Tear It Off" and "Da Rockwilder" (both from the "Blackout" LP as well).
(17) Da Brat feat. Tyrese "What'chu Like" B+. Da Brat is not a blindingly talented female rapper (especially when compared to Lil' Kim and Eve), but this song works. That can mainly be attributed to Tyrese's catchy chorus and Jermaine Dupri's slick production. Not groundbreaking by any means, but good fun.
Bottom Line: ****. A perfect example of what a rap compilation SHOULD be. The "Hip Hop Hits" albums started out shaky, and gradually got better before hitting rock bottom. This was the the series peak. There is not a single song here that wasn't a hit, and every track has some entertainment value. THE BEST raps of 2000 are ALL collected on this. I can not think of a better album to represent the phenomenal power of hip-hop at the dawn of the millenium.

Great Complilation.......2004-04-23

The Source's Fourth volume is very solid. You have some hardcore on this disc all the way to some light weights light Common. There have been source volumes where sometimes you want to skip a track, but not on this one, all these tracks are great. The source does a great job by connecting the songs together, always an extra point when they do that. Would have rather have seen a couple other tracks replace others, but no compilation is perfect. Sill, a very good disc.

The cd is real nice for a commercial rap fan like I am. I listened to it all the time before I got it stolen from me.

1. Country grammar- Nice song. Good 1st single by Nelly. It's a nice summer joint. Love the video. Keep doing what you doing Nelly.

2. The light- I love this song by Common. It really has a nice message. One of my favorites.

3. Party Up- One of my favorite DMX songs. My favorite line on the song was I lov my baby momma I never let her go.

4. Wobble Wobble- Me and my girl used to always be singing the chorus to this song.

5. Bad Boyz- Never really listened to this song.

6. The next Episode- Love this song Smoke weed everyday

7. It's so hard- Love this song by Big Pun. NIce beat
