From the first cut--"Mic Check," one of the coolest disc openers heard in ages--it's apparant that Fantasma is something special. To hear electronic musician Cornelius (aka Keigo Oyamada) in full effect, skip ahead to "Monkey," which bends blistering shoe-gazing rock with goofy sound effects, lush, surf's up vocals, and a pleasantly modulating 1980s synth with a loud, distorting drum-roll sample. Cornelius's rock-savvy, playful, and idiosyncratic musical collage works as much off the tension between disparate, sampled sounds as their seamless dance alongside each other. Fantasma is firmly in the spirit of the anything-goes, D.I.Y. tradition of both punk rock and early hip-hop. --Mike McGonigal
Spin
Fantasma, [Cornelius's] third full-length and debut U.S. album, is an exuberant kaleidoscope of hip-hop, noisecore, film soundtracks, cheesy listening, indie rock, even Sesame Street.... Fantasma is an endearing music-obsessive-comes-of-age tale--from Saturday morning TV to arena rock to bootleg Jean-Jacques Perrey reissues--but once the initial weirdness-buzz wears off, there's not a whole lot to latch onto.

Anna Netrebko's second CD is even more impressive than her first. She still may not be an absolutely polished, finished artist, but she's working at it and presents here a very satisfying---even thrilling---program. She doesn't quite have the stature or insights for Verdi's Violetta yet, but aside from some smudged coloratura in low-lying passages she sings the first act scene quite well (capped with a well-placed, big E-flat). She's close to ideal in the Sonnambula and Puritani excerpts, where her girlishness is entirely right, her coloratura dazzling, and her ability to sound tearful really impressive. The Lucia Mad Scene (also notable here for its use of the glass harmonica for which it was composed in place of the usual flute) is quite wonderful, even if the runs are sometimes not as well-delineated as they should be. And although she's not vocally suited to Desdemona's Willow Song and Ave Maria, she does manage to darken her voice to fit the character and presents a very moving portrait. The CD ends with an utterly charming "O mio babbino caro." Artistry and everything else aside, her voice is just beautiful. Claudio Abbado's leadership is ideal. --Robert Levine

I am in love with Anna.......2007-05-15
Did you see her in the Met's big screen broadcast of I Puritani? Then you know what I mean. Here is a just stunningly, impossibly gorgeous woman with a voice of liquid fire and gold who can sing with passion and precision while she's bending over and crawling around on the floor! If she weren't real I would guess she was the invention of the overinflamed imagination of a heterosexual opera queen (if such a being exists).
If you love getting great voice, buy this.
simple stunning.......2007-05-10
having just found this young womans CD in our local speciality store I was transformed from the mundaine life to the peak of ecstasy with her wonderful voice and the intense colours created by her own intensity. Here is a woman who can fill the heart with words that are pure gold and like velvet on the mind ,a truly wonderful voice and a stunning person to go with it .Here at last is a worthy successor to Dame Joan and others who gave opera to the world ,now we have in Anna Netrebko someone to give the passion and drama of opera to a new audience with the fire and fun of the pleasure this style of music can give.It is great to at last have an opera singer of this caliber who is unafraid to be herself and to let her own warmth and passion come through LONG May she continue to be the standard for others to attain.May she never change her love of singing and life
Ok but not a bel canto singer.......2007-03-21
Anna Netrebko's I Puritani selections are way below the art and skill of Callas, Sills, Sutherland, Caballe, and Gencer. She has no passion, no trills, no high notes that are deep and rich. Her best is in the Russian repertoire and possibley some undemanding Mozart.
Her broadcast from the Met Live of the I Puritani was alright, but scooping, avoidance of repetitions, running through passages like a locomotive, and an ending that would have brought the wrath of most opera houses in the world..scooping again, and a tight awful sounding high note. The same tentativenes is also here on this CD.She should know this. Her beauty and acting and allure are what interest the masses, not the voice, which is forgiven everything.
Too bad; she could be a lovely Tatyana some day. Also too, the Traviata is not that great; Anna Moffo , Renee Fleming, M. Caballe, and of course Maria Callas..Listen to these and hear the difference.
Having It All.......2007-01-22
This is a remarkable CD by the current "it" soprano. Anna Netrebko has it all. She is a wonderful singer, and a beautiful woman. Any star on the rise, particularly one with this much physical beauty and commercial promise, will always fall victim to criticisms that are more or less trivial. Believe me, I get it. When I first saw Anna, I wanted to be judgemental. After all, maybe she was just another pretty face being pushed by a record company. Then I heard her "Sempre libera" and became a fan.
There are criticisms of her trill, or her lack of a trill. Renee Fleming doesn't have a trill, and she has been the acclaimed queen for some time. Because of Anna's trill issues, she's criticized as lacking something that a coloratura should have. Well, she's not a coloratura. A good bel canto singer does not have to be a coloratura. There are criticisms of Anna's repertoire choices. You know why she picked this interesting melange for this CD? Because these are difficult scenes and arias, and she can do them. The only aria I didn't think "fit" is the "O mio babbino caro". She does it well, I just can't figure out what it's doing on this CD.
The "La Traviata" scene that starts the CD is absolutely magnificent. She is a wonderful Violetta, and sings this demanding scene with panache. She does the high E-flat at the end. Of course, she was coached by Scotto on this aria. Nice coaching if you can get it. No less remarkable are her scenes from "La sonnambula" and "I puritani". Her "Qui la voce" was beautiful. To listen to that gorgeous singing, and only focus on whether or not she has a trill is to miss the point of the music. I can definitely see why the Met is giving her the "Puritani" this season. Her scenes from "Lucia di Lammermoor" were technically perfect, and her mad scene very well done. The "Otello" scenes were amazing, particularly the floated pianos and pianissimos in the "Ave Maria". Abbado and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra are wonderful collaborators.
Ignore the criticisms and buy this CD! You'll be glad that you did. Highly recommended.
Talented singer, but should she choose her reportoire better?.......2007-01-10
Anna Netrebko has an attractive voice and a pleasing personality in this recording. But her performance also raises some questions.
First, she has a Callas-like habit (not a great compliment) when she ups her volume on higher notes of producing a rather unpleasant sound. In "Sempre libera," from "La Traviata," this is manifest. I compare this with the silky smooth lyric voice of Anna Moffo, from the 1960s and 1970s, who essayed this same piece in a manner much more attractive to the ear. Second, I could not hear a single trill on this CD (although maybe I missed something). In the colorature/bel canto repertoire, this is not a trifle. A trill is a standard part of a coloratura soprano's armamentorium. In that, again, she is like Callas, who scarcely issued forth a trill. "Spargi d'amaro pianto" is one of the classic cabalettas for coloratura sopranos. Sung without trills, it is not very satisfying. Some who have recorded the pyrotechnics of the "Mad Scene" have only displayed adequate trills (e.g., Anna Moffo or Angela Gheorghiu). Others, of course, have deployed wondrous effects, such as Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills. Just so, the cabalettas in "La Sonnambula" and "I Puritani."
Certainly, Netrebko also exhibits considerable strengths. Other ornamentation is fine; she has an agile voice; she can hit all the notes, including the high ones. Her vocal sound is most attractive (outside the one example noted earlier of a certain harshness). Her singing in the pieces from "Otello" and "Gianni Schicchi" are very well done.
So, all in all, a nice CD, but one that does not seem to feature Anna Netrebko at her best.

strange and beautiful.......2006-03-09
This is a strange yet hooky album, not easy listening at all, but when it gets you, it really gets you, but if you enjoy Cornelius, this is as good as it gets.
now go and buy some pizzicato five while you are at it, music does not get much groovier than them.
GENRE JUMPING IDM MAYHEM AND BRILLIANCE.......2004-11-11
Cornelius. A nutty Japanese guy that patches together more genres than your grandma does quilts!
This album, while not being overly innovative on a track by track basis, still leaves you with the distinct feeling that its the only album of its kind.
Encompassing smooth hip hop beats, samples and scratch trickery, cut and paste wizardry, perfect pop sensability, gorgeous harmonies, the full palette of instruments, crunching distortion, jangly acoustic strumming, blips and bops, and more!
Genres covered include big beat, psychadelica, folk, metal, hip hop, surf rock, space rock, beach boys pop, latin, IDM electronica, and list dont stop! All contained in at times frantic ADD song structures and other times cruisy laid back pop.
A masterful cut and paste collage of everything pop music has covered, and everything a production and pop genuis like cornelius is capable of.
GROOOOH.......2004-04-05
Quite simply put, Fantasma is insane.
Cornelius (AKA Keigo Oyamada) has collected and pasted his musical genius together into a CD case, and mailed it off to America. Songs flow from one to the other like silk, yet Kiego hardly contains any two tracks to the same genre. One listen to "Count Five or Six", and you will totally uppercut someone.
There is no word better word than "insane" to describe the genius encompassed in this album
The Japanese electronica of Fantasma.......2004-02-04
Listening to Fantasma is almost like visiting Tokyo Disneyland, with Cornelius taking something typically Western and adding a Japanese twist to it. A whirling dirvish of colorful sounds filled with unconventional twists and turns, almost one-upping his Western counterparts. The approach of Keigo Oyamada, aka, Cornelius, is similar to most electronica artists, along with incorporating equal parts rock swagger and the playful cartoonish spirit of J Rock. Thrown into this aural-carnival is everything from The High Llamas sunny vibes, the analog tweaks of Money Mark, and Beck's cut and paste approach, to nuggets of My Bloody Valentine feedback and Beach Boys experimentalism/harmonies. Adventurous, daring, and wonderfully produced. Fantasma demonstrates that electronica/rock is alive and well in the Land Of The Rising Sun. Let Cornelius take you along for the ride.
Genius.......2003-02-02
I first heard star fruits surf rider on a channel 4 broadcast for the fuji rock festival - i was instantly hooked by the presentation and amazing lush chords and espically the wind instrument break down in the middle. The whole album is all killer no filler - and every song sounds different to the other , the album is a real musical journey!! i was totally into straight up rock music before hearing this , so i think if you have an open mind to new music this is a totally essential purchase!!

The Italian Salvatore Licitra and the Argentinian Marcelo Alvarez are, arguably the two most exciting, promising (they're in their 30s), big-voiced, bread-and-butter (or steak-and-potatoes) "Italian" tenors around. Yhey have proved themselves on the stages of the great opera houses of the world and on recordings. This CD is designed to present them to a wider audience--it is clearly meant to appeal to Three Tenors and Andrea Bocelli fans. And, in fact, it succeeds. These guys have glorious voices: Licitra's is darker and somewhat heavier than Alvarez's, but the latter's shine is irresistible; one might compare them to Domingo and Pavarotti, respectively, to make that point. Neither has any problem throughout his entire range; each has big, secure top notes, and there's an innate musical intelligence at work at all times. Opera fans will relish the fantastic singing--listening to them trade high B naturals in the CD's third song, "Odissea," is thrilling--but will probably be disappointed by the music. It's soupily arranged, sentimental background drivel with catchy melodies (parts of "Salut demeure" from Gounod's Faust show up in something called "Son gli occhi tuoi," complete with a stellar high C from Alvarez), and even the gorgeous duet from Bizet's Les Pêcheurs de Perles (one of two "classical" pieces on the CD, if one doesn't count an instrumental piece by Bach to which trite lyrics have been added) has been re-arranged to include a tinny chorus, when singing it as written would have been a magnificent treat. Their voices are bathed in a phony-pop glow which will please the Bocelli market while continuing to horrify purists. Yet it is impossible not to be bowled over by the singing--a few off-pitch-at-low-volume moments and a mess of a "Je crois entendre encore" aside. In short, two high-power, world-class operatic tenors in their prime, singing, for the most part, music in which the treacle level is obnoxiously--even dangerously--high. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Great CD and Voices........2005-10-18
I love tenors and Italian music. Groban, Safina, Bocelli, Frangolis. These two men are in their category, and one of them even sounds like Safina. Very pleasant to listen in the car and in my office. I can listen more than once a day. You have to listen more than once. Don't expect to fall in love from the first sound.
Some critisizm:
a)One of the tenors is using to much vibrato, since it's popera... otherwise it's sounds great.
b)Duetto needs to be a Tenor - Soprano. These two guys should make separate CDs with two ladies. Groban does it very well!
The young tenors........2005-09-12
The amazing part of this album is that two young tenors can make as much music as three tenors (Carreras · Domingo · Pavarotti) have in the past. Salvatore Licitra and Marcelo Alvarez are the future - there is a balance in how they sing together, adding strength to rather than competing with one another.
UNEXPECTED.......2005-08-09
I bought this CD on suggestion from Amazon.com...I am thrilled with the music. The songs are emotional, beautiful, and well done. It was a great choice.
Pop Op.......2004-05-15
Their voices blend well and the opera duets are a little out of the ordinary. Unfotunately, they have been orchestrated with a Hollywood flair and sung with synthetic flamboyance. What a pity that it is only nice background music. I had hoped for excitement.
Fabulous!.......2004-02-24
I LOVED this CD. I'm a fan of tenors, but not a serious student of their voices, so I can't attest to the flawlessness of phrasing, etc. However, I found the music to be soulful and stirring, and Licitra and Alvarez's voices full and rich. I have given this CD to everyone I know - my parents, cousins, great aunts and friends, even my massage therapist, and everyone has enjoyed it. I listen to it often, pretending to sing along!

amazing.......2004-05-17
Sabine Meyer has a silky smooth tone...one you find only amoung the best clarinet players. Her third movement of the Mozart clarinet concerto is the best one i've ever heard. She makes it very light and exciting. It's really a neat recording because the Mozart concerto is on basset horn. Yes, I do agree that Sabine Meyer rushes the second movement along with some other tempos, but in my opinion she pulls it off. Even if you don't like the faster tempos, her tone is enough to distract you. I don't know much about the other selections because I've never personally played them, but they sound beautiful like Sabine Meyer always does. This cd along with other Sabine Meyer works is worth the money!
Very good Debussy but very bad Mozart.......2003-07-25
I liked Debussy's work very much and Sabine's performance is good.I liked her phrasing in the last movement of Mozart's concerto.
But the performance of the clarinet concerto is spoiled by the tempo she takes in the scond movement. It's way too fast(like they are missing the bus) and her phrasing is mechanical. On the whole the concerto is played way too fast.I think that clarinetists should play the concerto on A clarinet not basset clarinet.
Meyer is Among the Elite.......2003-02-13
This rendition of Mozart's K622 is possibly the most well known recording made by the greatest female clarinetist in history. Behind Marcellus and Shifrin, this is the top Mozart Concerto you could have in your music collection. Meyer, characterized by her famous dark German tone, plays the Rondo with such a cheery and jumpy tone that it makes this recording of the final movement unsurpassed by anyone before or after.
This is incredible.......2001-02-11
I bought this CD because of the Debussy Rhapsodie. As a serious clarinet player, I was tired of the excuse that I hadn't heard the Rhapsodie, so I bought this recording. I thought it was incredible, and after hearing more than 10 other good recordings, this is my favorite. Sabine and the BPO have injected the most excitement and lyricism in this piece. Even if Sabine's interpretation is somewhat unorthodox in terms of tempi in the scherzando and anime sections, this recording really grabs you. The Mozart is also probably the most spirited recording I have heard on a basset clarinet. Although Ms. Meyer really likes to rush her tempi, it comes off rather well. The BPO provides a firm, full, balanced support throughout. This comes off as a more powerful recording than many others. The Takemitsu was a piece I had never heard of, and I'm pleased that it is on this disk. While not being one of my particularly favorite concerti, it is quite interesting. The liner notes do an excellent job of explaining the ideas of the piece. I wish I had Stoltzman's premiere recording. This entire disk comes heartily recommended if you're looking for a little shakeup in the traditional clarinet repertoire and a little bit of new, too.

Wonderful Netrebko.......2007-07-15
Anna Netrebko is actually the best soprano on stage. She was born to sing and you can see that in her face; she enjoys to sing and you can feel it just listening her voice. I love her Amina because is dark and sounds a little bit sad. Just hope she could take her own time to rest; she is not a machine!!!

Customer Reviews:
Good--but not great--coloratura.......2007-01-17
Edita Gruberova makes this a very nice album, easy to listen to. Some of the cuts are extremely well done, others are a bit bland. On the whole, though, a worthwhile item to purchase.
Mozart's "Die Holle Rache," from "Die Zauberflote," starts the album. One of the best examples of her skills on this CD. Her voice easily reaches the high notes (and there are a lot of them!); she nails the highest notes of all in a way that seems effortless. Overall, good technique. Another Mozart aria, "Or sai qui l'onore," from "Don Giovanni," is well and strongly sung; as well, one gets a sense of the character through Gruberova's singing.
Other items worth noting in some detail. Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," of course, presents sopranos with one of the premier coloratura roles. Here, there are four examples. Her voice is clearly heard in the ensemble piece (not all sopranos can say that, although her final high note was almost drowned out by the orchestra). "Il dolce suono" and "Ohime! sorge il tremendo fantasma" are okay, but seem a bit on the bland side. Needless to say, I was most interested in listening to the remarkable cabaletta of the "Mad Scene," "Spargi d'amaro pianto." And while the singing was sound, it did not excite. Her agile voice is right for this piece; she hit the high notes well. But her trills were only adequate--except for one wonderful trill off of a high note. To be considered a great coloratura, I have to confess, I want to hear great trills. Also, the ornamentation was a little tame.
The aria from "La Traviata" would have been much better if the associated florid piece, "Sempre libera," had been included. However, her singing seemed to catch the emotions of this aria nicely. The one item from "Die Fledermaus" was fun, spritely sung.
There are other components of this CD, too.
All in all, a good, but not great, coloratura album. Key difficulties: lack of a great trill and rather plain ornamentation in the Mad Scene. Key pluses: a wonderfully agile voice; clean high notes; an ability to connect to the character in her singing.
So, a CD worth purchasing. . . .
Pretty good.......2006-04-25
Right away, we get Queen of the Night, which is very good, overall very fine. However, Gruberova doesn't have the rich texture and the power like Lucia Popp. Nevertheless, how many voices sound even remotely like this!!!
Here comes the Gruberova.......2005-09-08
Is this the worst cover they could find, or was there anything else left in the file labeled "Revenge of the Eightes: The Bridal Years"?
Pay no mind: on this CD, Gruberova's easy high notes alone are worth suffering through the visual horror. She cuts to the chase and starts with Queen of the Night's Hoelle Rache, a very very good one. And the orchestra is very, very loud. This is Mozart with subtlety of a sledge hammer, but it works well with Gruberova's athletic style.
Donna Anna that follows is interesting- Or Sai Chi L'Onore is strong, but lyrical. Gruberova sang a mean Donna Anna live and this is strong evidence for how good she was it in that role. Non mir dir is overdone and swooned somewhat, but it still works.
Another Mozart aria that follows, Dalla sponda tenebrosa, is good too, if overswooned again, and Vorrei spiegarvi gives us more of Edita's trademark top notes and lyrical poise, and some high octane energy- this is a live recording and the ovation at the end is well earned.
What doesn't quite work is the rest of the album; Ah, se in ciel is flat in places, Lucia's scene is overdone and overcrooned in the worst way, Violetta's scene is cut in half and bland. The end piece, Klange der Heimat by Strauss is OK, just about that.
Gruberova was a veritable force on opera stages- still is, but this is a mish mash collection, exciting in places but uneven. Another CD she released, the "The Art of Coloratura" has more interesting choices, but the cover that is even worse. Take your pick.
A contrary view.......2003-09-14
I'm a great fan of coloratura singing and have samples of just about all the great coloratura sopranos (Sutherland, Sills, Pons, Grist, Dessay, et al) and I must admit that Gruberova is one of the best. However, I must say her voice leaves me somewhat cold - very little vibrato and lot of scooping makes about 50% of her notes something less than "spot on", which is distracting. In particular, her "Vorrei spiegarvi, o Dio!" is, in my mind, a tragedy. Her intonation is shaky throughout and the scooping and crooning is horrendous! If you want to hear a truly great rendition of this really challenging number, listen to Beverly Sills' studio recording (included on "The Singers: Beverly Sills"). Talk about amazing!
Don't mean to rain on anyone's parade (for Gruberova is a truly fine singer and many of the tracks on this album are worth hearing), but just felt compelled to point out another view on "Vorrei. . .", particularly.
When will I hear her challenged!!.......2003-06-02
All I can say is, I'm waiting for the day when I can hear Edita Gruberova challenged. Here, we have the most difficult repertoire of all time: advanced coloratura arias by Mozart, Strauss and Verdi that make Soprano's quiver, and Donizetti's most challenging creation of Lucia di Lammermoor -- and Gruberova sings it like ice cream! What I mean by that is that she has a ridiculously ease with it ALL. Everything I've ever heard is SOOO easy for this woman!
"Vorrei Spiegarvi, oh Dio!" is sung live and she just slays the audience. Pitch is absolutely perfect (she's showing off!) and tone is pure and beautiful. She even floats a rarely done high G in the middle just for the fun of it.
Her Lucia arias are by far among the most amazing interpretations in history. Though no one can beat Beverly Sills are far as pyrotechnic coloratura extra ornamentation, her truthful acting and easy popping high notes are remarkable! All of the written high notes at the end of phrasing sounds right smack in the middle of her range! You almost assume the key has been lowered.
What I found incredibly disappointing and cheated with, is that on this CD is from La Traviata: 'E strano! e strano ... Ah, fors e' lui.' But no where to be found is the END of this set of arias: "Sempre libera." "Sempre libera" is the high excitement climax of this and it's not included! But all aside, these are sung with utter compassion and emotional committment. I now intend to purchase a full version of Gruberova's Traviata.
Also memorable is Strauss' Die Fledermaus: 'Klange der Heimat.' Again, technical mastery and very easy high note at the end.
Quite pleased that I now have such a collection Gruberova's versions of these arias. A must-have for Gruberova fans.
