Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Centered around the legendary nightclub the Hacienda, the evolution of Manchester, England's clubbing culture from punk's birth to the exuberant late-'80s, drug-addled "Madchester" scene is documented by 24 Hour Party People. As would be expected from a movie celebrating the rise of beat-oriented bands, the soundtrack reads like a who's who of Manchester's punk, postpunk, and dance acts. The dour, minimalist bass lines and desolation of Joy Division blurred into New Order's rhythmic mix of icy dance-floor desire and sorrow after JD vocalist Ian Curtis's suicide in 1980. Each group has their best songs included, as do Happy Mondays, their hypnotic, party-heavy beats and gospel-tinged revelry sounding fresh even today. While not as mainstream, a cut by gentle soulful noodlers the Durutti Column and serene comedown anthems from acid-house legends 808 State and A Guy Called Gerald are also gems. Even better, the two new New Order songs--an apocalyptic take on JD's "New Dawn Fades" with Moby on vocals, and the ultra-clubby Technique-flavored "Here to Stay"--fit in seamlessly. It's likely that fans of these bands already possess most songs included, but Party People is the ultimate snapshot of these eras, a mix tape of artifacts worth revisiting, or experiencing for the first time. --Annie Zaleski

Customer Reviews:
4/18 of Madchester.......2006-08-24
I saw the movie a few years back, enjoyed it, and recently bought the sound track.... What a disappointment! As I listened to the sound track, I realized yet again that Joy Division WAS Madchester and all the other tracks (with the possible exception of the New Order tracks) are just filler. The no-name bands are awful. Without Joy Division there would be no 24 Hour Party People worth remembering. So I wish I had bought a Joy Division album instead of this.
The CD With It All.......2005-04-27
This CD puts you in the thick of all that was good in Manchester late 70's to early 90's. Put it on and have a party.
Party People.......2004-04-20
The first part of the movie focuses on the band Joy Division and the history of Factory Records. While the movie featured several JD songs, we have the meat here: "Transmission" is their first great song, "New Dawn Fades" is them at their heaviest, "Atmosphere" is their most transcendent (although maybe some members were only concerned with the human sphere), "She's Lost Control" is their first great single and defined Manchester early on, and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is their most famous song, and their only really positive song, since it contains emotion and the concept of love.
Manchester is known for its cold humor and lack of sentimentality. Right after lead singer Ian Curtis killed himself, they formed New Order, which became one of the most popular bands of the time. His death is the end of chapter one of the story. Soon Ecstasy and dance took hold. Where punk gave us a bleak vision of the world, almost post-nuclear, the rave scene, "Madchester" as it was called, combined rock, drugs and dance. This blueprint has survived to cyber raves down the road from you with Sasha & Digweed. The inclusion of New Order tracks that were more danceable, and A Guy Called Gerald, Happy Mondays, and 808 State are reminders who are the originators. I was 15 years old when Joy Division started and about 27 when "Pacific State" came out and when Happy Mondays collapsed, so this is like the soundtrack to my youth. There are some obscure bands like The Duritti Column represented, but lost are Magazine, The Fall, and A Certain Ratio, who figure more in the movie. But most of that is nit-picking. The movie is great. The soundtrack to the movie is better.
Can't imagine a better compilation.......2004-02-29
I normally hate compilations. Hate the concept, hate the low-down commercial intent. BUT this is BRILLIANT. Even if you haven't seen the film, don't know who Tony Wilson is, don't know/care where Manchester is... just buy this compilation. It's a totally inspiring (and challenging) snapshot of an amazing period in British music. Other reviews have pointed out that it's not 'comprehensive' in that it's missing anything by the Stone Roses, but that's irrelevant when you have 18 amazing songs here.
Where's the beef, Alf?.......2003-08-19
I'm afraid Alfonso Lozada has missed the point. The film is about a span of time in the life of one person, Tony Wilson, and is thus structured around his experiences. At the same time, the film is not a documentary but a fictionalized account. On top of all this, the "Tony" character does mention the short shrift the Stone Roses get. Is it really a surprise to find the soundtrack album bereft of artists which did not appear in the film?

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A National Treasure.......2007-07-05
This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.
Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.
If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.
Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27
The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!
Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11
I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.
Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11
I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.
Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19
Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.
Certainly worth the money!

Customer Reviews:
Ryder at his best........2007-07-08
John Cale had his hand in the production of this album... I remember the day I purchased it - and that was a very long time ago. I have the super rare white cover version... I still love this CD... Whenever I play this, people want to borrow it - I never let them - because it was so hard to get or out of print for a while... It remains one of my most special CD's and I never really stopped listening to it.
If you enjoy or collect music from this "genre" then this is really a "must have" album for you. I wouldn't say that it "started it all" but it was in the mix... Ryder was at his best and provides real energy here-Another thing I really like about this album are the bass lines...
It's groovy, delicious and hard to put down. I also recommend Pills + Thrills and Bellyaches and the Black Grape album: It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah.
A Madchester Marvel.......2004-04-18
This debut album of fun, irreverent dance music is unique because the songs are based on jangly guitar riffs rather than synthesizers and drum machines. Happy Mondays' reliance on keyboards and electronic beats would increase over the next few albums. But here the band, as captured by the legendary John Cale, offer a refreshing alternative to the ultra-slick, over-produced sound of most late eighties pop music.
The lyrics are crass, sly, and at times nonsensical, but somehow always endearing. Even though the songs (apart from Russell and Cob 20) have a lot of charm, Shaun Ryder's wildly uneven and unprofessional vocal delivery won't appeal to everyone. In fact, you'll probably either love or hate his approach, but that's part of what made the Mondays so special.
Bez, House music, and the Madchester scene were just around the corner, but this really was the record that started it all!
One of the most important albums ever made.......2003-12-30
Even if you don't like rave or dance music, you will love this album. The lyrics are dark the music infectious. Without a doubt, Shaun Ryder on his best day rivals Blake on his average days. There really is nothing to compare it to as the Mondays created a genre all their own. This album is what every 80's alt-pop band wanted to be but could not.
I listened to this album and ended up buying the entire Mondays collection (Including Yes, Please and even a Black Grape album). The first three Mondays albums are by far the best.
mint.......2000-08-02
It's mint...buy it. Madchester rave on. They were born in Little hulton and its rough there...this album captures it all...a bunch of rum manc lads...rave on

Product Description
The debut effort from this Alabama string band unfolds like a long, pleasantly exhausting evening at a contradance: The tunes are presented mostly in medleys (so as to avoid boredom on both the dancers' and the band's part) and are generally upbeat without being frenetic. The group's instrumentation is a little unusual: Strict traditionalists may not approve of the harmonica or, heaven knows, the banjo ukulele in place of the traditional open-back five-string banjo played clawhammer style. But the twin fiddles of Ed Baggott and Jim Cauthen (mainly playing in unison but occasionally separating into lovely harmony lines) carry the tunes with a sound that is as deeply traditional as any in American music, and if you can listen to these performances without dancing around the room you may need your pulse checked. Highlights include the incongruously beautiful "Muddy Creek/Dead Slave" medley and a very nice rendition of the classic "Rose of Alabama," sung and played on the autoharp by Bill Martin. A must for old-timey music fans.
