The Kinks' 1970 effort was the penultimate creation in a five-year, six-album burst that ranks just a notch below the great sustained rock & roll eruptions of Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Stones, and Elvis Costello. Of course, the linchpin to this collection is "Lola," Ray Davies's irresistibly vivid account of the charms of a seductive transvestite. Its daring (for the time) subject matter aside, "Lola" stands as one of the great singles of all time. Add to the list the almost as infectious "Apeman," a slew of funny, shrewd, alienated-rock-star screeds ("Top of the Tops," "The Moneyground," "Powerman"), and a couple of memorable contributions from Ray's brother, Dave ("Strangers," "Rats"), and you have the Kinks at their raucous, righteous, quirky quintessence. --Steven Stolder

Meta-Kinks.......2007-05-28
I take a backseat to no one in my love for the Kinks. They were the first rock band that grabbed me back in 1965 with "Well Respected Man" and "Sunny Afternoon," and, thereafter, I continued to rediscover them. I caught up with Kinks in 1969 with "Arthur," then again in 1970 with "Muswell Hillbillies," and again in 1972 with the Kink Kronikles retrospective, which introduced me to the UK hits "Waterloo Sunset" and "Days" as well as oddly compelling achievements like "Autumn Almanac" and "Death of a Clown." I recall vividly the release of the single "Lola," which came after "Arthur." It was almost too good: Too melodic, too funny, too brilliant in every way. The album, which followed, left me a little cold, and I've never really given it much of a listen in the past 35+ years since its release.
Now that I've given this album another chance, I can't seem to pry it from my CD player. Is this the Kinks' best album? Better than "Village Green Preservation Society?" "Muswell Hillbillies?" It might be. Musically, it's their biggest, boldest statement. Lola is like the seed of a pearl, the album being about the creation of a hit single, first the desperate climb to the top, in "The Contenders," "Denmark Street," "Get Back in Line," followed by the single itself, followed by all the things that followed; hitting "the Top of the Pops," inspiring "The Moneygoround," where people make money off "a song they've never heard," and then the life of being stars, represented by two of the disc's highlights, "This Time Tomorrow" and "A Long Way from Home" -- two of the prettiest melodies Ray Davies ever wrote. Then, finally the sometimes funny, sometimes angry struggle to break free of the commercial monster they've created, in "Apeman," "Powerman," and "Got to be Free." Woven into this narrative are two of Dave Davies' best Kink contributions, "Strangers" and "Rats," which don't fit the story line precisely, but capture its mood, "Strangers" especially.
See? It's an album with a hit single that's about the hit single. And by the end of it, they're running as far away from the hit single as they can. This is meta-fiction, 25 years ahead of its time. But it's not difficult. This album has a little of everything that makes the Kinks great: Beautiful melodies, savage rock riffs, music-hall-style satire, and lyrics both clever and heartfelt. A true treasure. Why didn't I hear it this way before?
Almost Perfect.......2007-05-05
I first bought this album because the morning show that I would listen to on the radio in SLC (Radio from Hell) would sometimes play "Apeman" as an intro song. After hearing it about half a dozen times, I finally decided to hunt down this CD. I concur with the opinions expressed by many of the previous reviewers. This is a stellar album, and I am disappointed in myself that I hadn't heard it earlier in my life. I do have one complaint for which I am subtracting one star. To my ears, this CD desperately needs to be remastered. The mix sounds tinny and weak. For me, this is most apparent on the song "Apeman" - the reason I bought the album. The vocals seem to be buried underneath the the instrumentation. I bought my copy used, so perhaps it was an earlier release CD, and there has since been a remastered release. But believe me, you will not regret purchasing this album.
Brilliant concept album.......2006-12-19
I owned this LP when it was released and I played it non-stop. The songs were acted out in "the theater in my head": it took me on an exciting, sometimes poignant, emotional journery every time. This is a brilliant concept album. "Lola versus Powerman..." still holds a very special place for me in the exordinary Kinks discography.
This is where Lola shows you who's boss........2006-11-30
Having grown up thru the British Invasion I can tell you that Ray Davies was writing songs on par with Lennon/NikCartney. The Kinks invented hard rockin', I don't care who agrees. RD in his prime could go song to song with the 'Beatlez' and his prime lasted longer than either of the aforementioned.
Toppermost of the Poppermost.......2006-11-30
Absolutely the best Kinks album, bar none. It also is one of the greatest rock albums ever. No need to delete anything before you hit "play" - unless maybe you've heard "Lola" once too often. It also has cohesiveness and a storyline. Although I usually get tired of even good material, this one always seems fresh and gets a regular spin. (It brings back fond memories of when I managed to play "Top of the Pops" on my high school's PA system.) In my experience, whenever someone hears it for the first time they always ask about it (sometimes they think it's a "greatest hits" CD - altho Lola was actually the only hit). Bottom line: if you don't own it, buy it.

Just before heading off to a 15-year stay in Europe, the stately Dexter Gordon waxed a pair of records for Blue Note in August 1962: this classic and, two days later, A Swingin' Affair. It's been widely reported that Gordon himself considered Go! his greatest achievement, and (if so) it's easy to hear why. Brimming with conviction and poise, Gordon's gentle-giant sax carries itself with a sort of graceful edge that is difficult to emulate. He's always quick with a humorous quote, yet it always seems to fit just right. He's always languishing behind the beat, yet he never seems late. He possesses an enormous tone, yet he never overwhelms the songs or the listener. He sounds unhurried at any speed. His song selection is typically creative, holding little-known ballads close to his brawny chest like a big, cuddly bear. A stellar rhythm section of the elegantly funky pianist Sonny Clark plus Butch Warren and Billy Higgins doesn't hurt either. --Marc Greilsamer
Album Description
Dexter Gordon considered this his finest album and few would disagree. With the perfect rhythm section of Sonny Clark, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins, this tenor giant reinvents standards like "Three O'Clock In The Morning," "Second Balcony Jump" and "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" and introduces his most famous composition "Cheese Cake."

Go is the album to get. .......2007-03-24
I thought the whole band played quite excellent and Dextor played with aggression, and beauty that is unheard of in some of todays players.
Finger-Snappin' Jazz.......2006-06-01
Man, what a tone DG had on his sax!! There's not one note on this CD that doesn't sound like the best note ever recorded, not one that sounds out of place. A very melodic, solid, swinging CD. While Dexter seems to be firmly rooted in singable dance-band jazz, Sonny Clark's chromatic lines and voicings provide the perfect pull towards bop (a sort of soft-bop album, if there is such a thing). This CD (and Hank Mobley's "Soul Station", another gem of the same caliber) should never be out of reach of your stereo if you like tenor sax, good piano playing, or just plain jazz. Best money I ever spent, and I have 700 CDs.
Thanks!
Man,I dig 'Cheese Cake'.......2006-02-17
Like a countdown to a rocket launch,'Go' kicks off with
Butch Warren's bass and Billy Higgins on cymbals, setting up some serious kick ass blowin' by Dexter Gordon on his classic 'Cheese Cake', one of my all time favorite jazz numbers;my only complaint-as other reviewers have stated -is this classic cd's length-less than 40 minutes. In any case,Gordon considered 'Go' his best cd.
Tragically, soon after this cd was recorded in 1962,Sonny Clark, the great pianist on this album would die of a heroin od at 31.And in 1986,Gordon,who should've recieved the Oscar for his portrayal of Dale Turner,an expatriate tenor sax player in 'Round Midnight' was ripped off for the Oscar in 'Round Midnight.'
Endlessly entertaining.......2005-04-01
A spectacular album, easily one of the greatest ever made. Buy it now.
Dexter Gordon, Go!!.......2005-03-25
This was, I think, Dexter Gordon's proudest session he ever did. The second to last album he made here in the states before he packed up his bags for Europe to gain a wider and more acceptice audience.
Dexter Gordon has always been one of my favorite saxophonists. His sound is warm, not as deep as Sonny Rollins, and more heavy than Hank Mobley, Dexter was his own man. He had a style all his own, and demonstrated them on a vast number of fine albums for Blue Note in the early sixties.
I think the only other equivelent to Gordon's Go album is Dexter Calling. A fine work by all who participated, but back to Go.
Cheese Cake, written by Gordon is an endless flow of ideas, originality, dexterity, and fine horn playing. One of the best "B" sections I ever heard.
As the boys groove through Second Balcony Jump, the music is very effective. The unique (for a Blue Note album at the time) rendition of Love For Sale, is definately a highlight on the album. And so is the ballad, Where Are You.
The musicians on the album are all great too. The underrated, Sonny Clark, who recorded this album in the last months of his short life, was at the top of his game. His ideas are expressive, innovative, and provocative. He is the color that comes from the nifty quartet. The stride piano opening line by Clark on Three O'Clock In The Morning reminds me of the opener Miles Davis used to have pianist Red Garland do for the opening of "If I Were A Bell." Garland also did it with his own trio. (Red Garland's Piano, circa 1957)
The Rhythm section team of Butch Warren and Billy Higgins must have been a dream to play with for Gordon and Clark. Billy Higgins was being used around this time on a lot of Blue Note sessions. He had made his mark with Ornette Coleman in 1959 a couple years earlier.
The sound quality could be a little better, but with the exceptional music, one does not seem to notice, but the rivet cymbol overdose is a killer sometimes, when it sizzles through all the other instruments.
It is no wonder how this album made its way to compact disk, but just be greatful for it.
Dexter Gordon lives on!

The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12
The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!
A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26
One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.
Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.
The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.
A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29
"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.
All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.
Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.
The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!
I Love it !.......2006-09-06
I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.
The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!
The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13
The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

Pat Benatar practically invented female empowerment in rock, so it's a good to see she is back with her 17th album. Produced by her guitarist husband Neil Giraldo, Go shows that Benatar hasn't lost any of her swagger or punch. She's still the mistress of the emotional watershed as she pinpoints the precise moment when a long-suffering protagonist implodes and decides she will no longer be a victim of love. The kinetic and lyrical power released during those exchanges is still staggering, and songs like "I Won't" and "Go" visit the same teeth-gnashing terrain as "Love is a Battlefield," and "Hit Me with Your Best Shot." The only times she stumbles out of her stilettos is when she shows a softer side on the regretful "Sorry," which finds her splendidly ragged voice drowned in a sea of limpid Spanish guitars, and the Motown-esque "Please Don't Leave Me." But for most of the disc, Benatar is a hard-glittering rock gem who still can rage with the best of them. --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
A fantastically awesome album. Definitely NOT a retro thing, either........2007-04-20
This is a review written in sections from three different years.
Original 2003 Review: It's taken six years for another Pat Benatar record to be released (not counting a plethora of live and greatest hits albums which I ignored). My wife and I went to see Pat Benatar in concert on Aug 9th 2003, and it was wonderful. They had Go for sale (when we were at the concert, hadn't yet been released which was very cool to see). So I picked it up. Listened to it in the car on the way home, and on first listen, there's quite a lot of really good stuff on it. Go, Girl, Have it All, are amongst the highlights. A definite must buy - it's quite bloody good!
Update 1: As I update this in October 2004, I have to say this album is a great mix of her new adult rock style, with some smatterings of her older styles thrown in. Not to say she's returned to the 80's but this is more a rock album than Innamorata is. Right up there with Innamorata (which is my favorite all time Benatar album), in my opinion.
Update 2: As I update this yet again in April 2007, this album has grown stronger. When most people think of Pat Benatar, they think of what they remember from the 1980's. Now there's nothing wrong with the music from then, but remembering someone as an 80's artist pigenholes them into what they can be perceived in doing. Go destroys that. As some of the other reviews here have stated, Go is an ignored album. Ask your average rock fan if they have this, they'll likely say no, followed by "She's still making records", and then most likely think about the "80's stereotype". That's a damn shame. I run a website for the band Black Sabbath. I point that out, because I should, by the stereotype be the last person to love this album. The heck with that - great music is great music. This is a brilliantly strong record from start to finish. There's no filler here, and I cannot recommend this album strongly enough. It's hard to pick out individual tracks for praise because I like so many of them, but if I had to, my favorite is "Brokenhearted". But it's all good.
A GREAT REDISCOVERY.......2006-11-03
THIS DISC IS LIKE STEPPING BACK 20 YEARS. PAT CAN STILL ROCK YOUR WORLD.
I MISSED HER STYLE AND VOCALS AND LOOK FORWARD TO MORE RELEASE"S FROM HER IN THE FUTURE.
One of the best (and most overlooked) CD's of 2003.......2006-10-13
Pat Benatar started to see a commercial slide during the latter part of the 80's which culminated with her 90's material going pretty much ignored even though it saw her continuing to grow as an artist.
2003's Go was her attempt to break back into the modern music age with an updated sound that successfully merged her patented vocal/musical style with more modern production techniques/arranements that really worked.
I was blown away by how great this CD was. And I didn't really notice that it had come out until recently, a full 3 years after the fact.
That's because that no one at all talked about this CD when it came out originally. Pat Benatar is usually lumped in as just a has-been 80's artist. And while her commercial heyday WAS back in the early to mid 80's, unlike a lot of other artists from that era, she hasn't really waned in terms of vocal/lyrical/musical ability at all.
One thing that is great about this album is that her past albums had a ton of outside songwriters in addition to her husband/producer/guitarist/co-writer Neil Giraldo. This album was pretty much written solely by Pat and Neil. He produced it as well.
The sound is crisp without being overproduced and Neil wisely placed some more modern production touches sparingly throughout the album.
The variety on display is also astounding. There's hard rocking numbers, more laid back adult contemporary stuff and some of her most catch pop stuff in years.
While it might not transcend her classic material, I still feel that this collection of tracks can stand proudly alongside her more classic material just fine.
For someone just getting into Pat, I recommend picking up Go, her recent Greatest Hits CD and Gravity's Rainbow to start out. If you like what you hear on those, then start to delve into her individual albums that I didn't mention in the preceding sentence like Crimes of Passion, Precious Time and her adventurous but also ignored jazz/blues/big band 1990 album True Love.
Pat is still one of the most talented, sexy and stylish women to ever walk the earth and this CD comes highly recommened.
keep the hidden stuff hidden.......2005-12-14
Go reminded me of Big Country's direction towards the regretful end of their career. A lot of substantive songs with country influences. Real nice.
It was perfect until the "God Bless America, One Nation Under God(Dogma)" song in the end. Yes I know it was after 911, but those SUV flag waving kill them all days are over.
Three words: Buy this Disc.......2005-10-28
After blistering the charts -- and the airwaves -- with six multi-platinum albums in her first six tries, the public's radar more or less lost contact with Pat Benatar. A much-deserved break between 1985 and 1988 all but erased her memory from a large percentage of music buyers. Returning with "Wide Awake in Dreamland" (The Best Kept Secret of 1988), "True Love" (The Best Kept Secret of 1991), "Gravity's Rainbow" (The Best Kept Secret of 1993) and "Innamorata" (wait for it...The Best Kept Secret of 1997) Benatar seemed to have softened somewhat from the fire-breathing in-your-face rocker we knew from "In The Heat of The Night" up through "Get Nervous". This was a happier Pat, a kinder, gentler Pat and it was heartwarming to hear someone who'd given so much to her audience finally sounding like she'd found the sunny side of the street. Still, we did kind of miss the edgy, raw energy of the early years...
No more. It's back, with interest on "Go". Even the cover art harks back to the days of "Fire and Ice" and "No You Don't". The lyrics to the title track remind us of that long-ago ad in Rolling Stone captioned "Pat Benatar Kicks Ass", as well as the songs that inspired it. "I Won't" conjures memories of "I Want Out" (Get Nervous) and remind anybody who might have forgotten that this is NOT a woman to trifle with.
Neil Giraldo continues to defy convention as a guitarist and a composer, keeping us just off-balance on tracks like "Have It All". Just as quickly, the husband-wife team give us an almost-oratorio with "Out Of The Ruins", which stirs memories of Benatar's cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" (Crimes of Passion), and reminds us just why she's had 25+ years of staying power. Unlike the glam-mill female rock singers so ubiquitous in today's market, Benatar can actually SING. And while the classically-trained range may have shrunk to the realm of the merely mortal, make no mistake -- none of the latest pop diva/goddesses can touch her for true musical ability.
If you're a long time fan, you'll find this album as comfortable and familiar as your favorite shirt. If you haven't yet discovered the force-of-nature power of Pat Benatar, this is a great place to start. And if you came in late (post-1988) this will be a crash course in what you missed -- and an incentive to catch up!

Dweezil definitely his father's son.......2007-06-27
This is my first Dweezil Zappa CD, and let me tell you it is awesome! At first listen, I wasn't sure if I liked it, but it grows on you. Listen to the entire CD and you'll agree he's all that and then some... definitely has those musical Zappa genes!
Dweezil shines.......2007-06-24
Wow, The Dweez really smokes on this release. Only one song features any vocals the rest are all instrumental and really showcase his guitar playing styles. At 52 minutes it is somewhat on the short side but I would rather have a shorter high quality record than a bloated 74 minute release with a lot of filler, there's not a weak track in the bunch here.
It would appear that Dweezil intends to release records less frequently than his Dad did which may be a good thing as I think he has a great career ahead of him and I look forward to following it.
Syntheziers a little to much, but great writing and playing from DZ.......2007-01-13
Like I said this album is great but a little to much syntheziers for my taste! I have every DZ album and can't get enough of him and his work, and definitely encourage guitar lovers to listen and buy his other albums! This album has good range from heavy to slow and tripie, and the writing is a step up from his last album wich I believe was music for pets with Ahmet(wich was a dissapointment in every way)! If you like guitar albums such as Vinnie Moore, Tony Mcalpine, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, and other guitar greats you will love this album and appreciate Dweezil's great playing through out this album! The highlight is a remake of an old Frank song called peaches en regalia witch I have another recording of DZ doing it live with Steve Morses old band The Dixie Dreggs!
Not surprizing to see the Abundant talent here..........2007-01-08
DZ composed and played most of the sounds on this fantastic recording. Alot of the time it sounds like a Zappa - a more accessible watered down version of his father perhaps - but modern, fresh, alive and creative none the less. There is some pedestrian playing here (Van Halenish riffs) but there's also some really beautiful sounds, played with a nice balance of tribute to the incomprable, irreplaceable FZ and to his own particular muse. (We get alot of FZ inspired guitar tones and rhythms composed/arranged in Dweezil's own way, and DZ tends towards prettier arrangements than his father.)
I saw DZ and the Zappa Plays Zappa tour in Seattle (can't wait to see the DVD made that night!) last month and was blown away by the faithful spirit of the playing. Once they got warmed up they were really on, giving it their heart and soul. It'll be interesting to see how DZ continues to balance this desire to play and promote his Dad's legacy and develop his own. It's an interesting phenomena.... and worth getting this CD to see how it's beginning.
My personal favorites here are when he sounds more like himself...I was excited to hear him play along with the original tape of Peaches and Regalia, but it turned out to be one of the CD's weaker tracks. Thats a good thing and sez alot.
The Woodshed Shows.......2006-12-29
DZ as it would appear, woodshedded himself away, hired the teachers out there three years ago.. they taught him how to read music and he found out how to write music.
this cd shows that off quite a bit.
I saw the Zappa plays Zappa tour in Houston, and DZ was just great.
Zappa fans should get ready because I bet that DZ will be starting a new life in music.... it has 'hit him'
The arrangements of songs vary quite a bit. You have eddie van halen sounds on one song then you have a very large map of music. I like all of it, but it helps to see him play live.
Have fun.

Good Album.....BAD Re-Issue!!!!.......2006-09-14
I bought the cassette of the album back in the late 80's and really liked it. When I saw the re-issue CD was out I sold my cassette and bought the CD. BIG MISTAKE!!! I have 3 problems with this re-issue: 1) a whole verse (about a minute of the song)is taken out of "Love Kills", 2)the ending of "Breakout" is gone, and 3) the bonus tracks are just very boring demos (one is a drum solo? and the other is Vinnie puttering around on an acoustic guitar). I would much rather have the ORIGINAL version of this album on cassette with all the original tracks intact than this butchered remastered CD!
Here comes the Invasion.......2006-05-25
It amazes me that so few people know that most of Slaughter came from the lineup on this CD. The vocals right off are unmistakeably those of Mark Slaughter. I would say in the world of Vinnie Vincent that this was his most notable CD. The lyrics are straight 80's cheese, but the performance on all aspects is pretty impressive. Vinnie's lyrical aproach may be lacking, but he could slay a guitar like few can. If nothing else, get a copy of this just to hear the beginings of what would lead up to the band Slaughter.
So bad it's good.......2006-05-09
Vinnie Vincent is obviously a very talented guitar player, but his songwriting skills leave a lot to be desired. The former KISS guitarist embraced every single hair metal clich? he could find for his debut album, and then did it again for 1988's All Systems Go. Aside from some blazing guitar solos, there's really nothing on this album that you couldn't find everywhere else in 1988. And the lyrics - let's just say Vinnie "Shoot You Full of My Love" Vincent makes Spinal Tap look brilliant by comparison.
It's easy to rag on All Systems Go, but I actually have fond memories of this album from when I was younger, and it really does have its good points. First of all, you really can't deny Vinnie's talent. And there are a couple of standout tracks (Ashes to Ashes being a prime example). But the album's most notable feature is the presence of Mark Slaughter on vocals. Slaughter's high-pitched wail was the prefect counterpart to Vincent's frenetic playing.
The 2003 reissue of All Systems Go is a mixed blessing. It's good in that the out of print album is available again, and the remastered sound is a big improvement. The downside is that those dreadful lyrics are that much easier to hear.
All Systems Go would be the Vinnie Vincent Invasion's final album. Most of the band would join vocalist Mark Slaughter in the very successful band Slaughter, while Vinnie Vincent seemed to disappear for the better part of a decade.
Invasion came and then all systems went,.......2006-03-02
All right I was very pleased with invasion and So i picked up all systems go, I don't care for this ablum much and heres why,
Every song on this album sounds like a song off the first album, hell some off the songs sound like the only differnce is the words, the two instrumentals suck and compare nothing to Aces Fractured mirror series. the guy on Vocals sounds like a wannabe of the first guy. it acutally sounds like they used voice effects on his vocals to make him sound like the previous singer.
whatever the case, I thought this ablum would grow on me but it is nothing original you get this album on the first album with differnt lyrics. sorry vinnie but this one sucked.
the only good song on here is let Freedom rock.
"All systems Go" - thanks to Mark and Dana .......2005-06-02
VVI's 2nd album is definitely the pinnacle of the ex-Kiss er's career... Why? Because he had the pleasure of working with 2 of the greatest rock and roll musicians of the 90's - Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum. Mark Slaughter's helium high vocals bring to life the rock standard `I love females' lyrics written by Vincent himself, whilst Dana's Bass lines give the songs unique rhythmic character making them a lot more definitive - opposed to the `Bass line that plays the guitar bit' which according to interviews of the day Vinnie wanted. It's no wonder that Mark and Dana bailed Vincent to work on their own band `Slaughter' and their 1st album went on to platinum sales with hit after hit. Even to this day Slaughter is an active band, still gigging and recording. Funny how after VVI Vincent disappeared... you do the math.

when we say BOOM, we mean BOOM.......2007-07-09
having followed PT career with admiration, here comes his latest release. its another collection of covers and rerecorded personal faves. the performaces are excellent but some of song choices are peculiar to me because of them not showcasing his talent enough. some of those choices are GIMME BACK, LAST CHILD and SUPERSTITIOUS. some of the excellent choices are EVIL, DISAPPEAR and LIGHTS OUT. there is wonderful intimate feel to this disc which sizzles with RAW/LIVE energy. while having new material is great to have from PT-I just wish he would get back to more original songs. if you are a fan, climb on and remember its just past the 4TH OF JULY and there are still BOOMERS to hear.

A hilarious middle finger to the 70's.......2006-06-05
It's funny to imagine some trendy hippie finding this at a record store in the 70's and seeing song titles like "Master Race Rock" and "Back to Africa". It's even funnier to imagine some white supremacist buying this album for exactly those songs only to hear "They didn't know we were Jews" on the first track. It's hilarious to hear the way they make fun of the Beach Boys with the harmonies on "(I Live For) Cars and Girls" or the even more hilarious Sonny & Cher cover. They send up everything from the transience of rock stardom to hippies to the idiocy of 70's hedonism. But for a band that plays it up for laughs, they're a lot smarter than they let on. You have to be in on the joke to enjoy this band, but enjoy them you will!
What about the music? It's somewhere between early Alice Cooper or Kiss and the New York Dolls or MC5, with chunky riffs and guitar leads and pounding rhythms. The punk elements of the band are more in their attitude on this album because they have a definite 70's hard rock vibe. But hey, it was 1975, "fast and loud" sounded totally different back then. It's quintessential rock n' roll -- music for unpretentious dudes who just want to raise hell and have a good time.
great, but not my fave.......2005-10-19
How could you not pick up a CD/LP (in my time) with a pix of some goofball in a singlet and a glitter jacket in the background sporting the name Handsome Dick Manitoba?!? Curiosity is the crux of R & R and this was for the good.
The tunes are timeless--Next Big Thing, 2 Tub Man,....
They Rock And They're funny.
C'mon--talking about White Castle, Vitamin C, "ralphing", gasoline shortage, fat chicks....
They wrote songs that every schlub could identify with.
My only 'problem' is in the production---too overdubbed in the sense of the rhythm tracks are down and then BOOM all of a sudden a lead guitar comes from nowhere and blasts the song to death.
I love this LP but not as much as 'Manifest Destiny' which a lot of people rate as weak.
Too stoopid for you? Try too briliant (4.5 stars really).......2004-11-21
This album works as both a parody and a loving tribute to rock 'n' roll, and manages to be one of the best rock 'n' roll albums ever. The first half is okay, but the second half contains five of my favorite songs. This was one of the few albums in the 70's that tried to save rock 'n' roll from Frampton and his evil ilk. The covers of "I Got You Babe" and "California Sun" manage to be better than the originals, and "I Live For Cars and Girls" and "Weekend" are songs that the Beach Boys just wish they could've written. Some PC freaks may hate "Back to Africa" or "Master Race", but the Dictators are not serious, they're just kidding around. So what are you waiting for? Pick up this true R-N-R classic.
One of the best Rock n Roll albums.......2003-12-24
This has got to be one of my favorite albums. I knew a few songs off of it, when i saw it for six bucks at a used CD store. I'm glad to say that it had to be the best six bucks I ever spent (or maybe it was on Patti Smith's Horses). "Go Girl Crazy" is a loud Rock n Roll album, packed with plenty of humor. The lyrics are fun, and even go so far as to insult Lou Reed (even though velvet underground is all good, it's one of my favorite lines in the album), who basically created the 70's New York rock scene (which the Dictators are a part of). All in all, I highly recomend this album to anyone who's looking for a fun rock n roll packed weekend.
Good stupid fun.......2003-07-11
I bought this album after reading "Please Kill Me," the history of the New York punk scene. The author, Legs McNeill, says somewhere in the book that he and his cronies at Punk magazine were huge fans of the Dictators' album "Go Girl Crazy" back in the summer of 1975. This made me curious and I ordered the album from Amazon. I'm glad I did. Every song is a mini-masterpiece of anarchic, goofy, party rock. The Dictators were perhaps one of the most unpretentious bands in the history of rock. They saw themselves as a joke and invite their listeners to laugh along with them. But they also had a knack for pairing sharp lyrics with catchy guitar hooks, creating some truly memorable moments. My favorite opening line on the album: "Who's that boy with the sandwich in his hand?"

Customer Reviews:
Terrible.......2006-04-11
Awful space rock. Chord progressions very tired and predictable. "A Design for Life" is the only song here I can tolerate.
Masterpiece.......2005-12-31
All the songs of this albums are brilliant, i haven't heard such a 100 % accuracy since Ramones selftitled album. Lirically, the Manic Street Preachers do have something to say (unlike the tons of crap we hear on the radio every day). And the music is just excellent. Interiors (song for willem de kooning) is my favourite song of the album, the vocals really hit your nerves, and the guitar dives in a supersonic limbo.
I wouldn't put the MSP among the bands of the brit pop wave, they AIN'T BRIT POP. This is a great welsh alternative rock band, not some Oasis copycats. No fancy looks, no multimedia fights between it's members, just tight, well executed, full of emotion, rock.
Get yourself a copy, this album is a jewel of the ninetys, as good as Jeff Buckley's "Grace".
yawn.......2005-09-23
I don't know much about the history of this band, nor do I care to learn after listening to some of this record. Terribly boring and uninspired. Obvious and tired chord progressions and musicianship. Vocal melodies are the type that come off the very top of your head without putting an ounce of thought into it; the type that are probably the perfect average of every single vocal melody you've ever heard throughout your entire life.
Great album.......2005-03-31
While I agree with the reviewer who called them an "anti-US" band (they are) and they are among the biggest idiots in the world politically (they are....just listen to their lyrics and some of their "arguments"), this album is fantastic. A triumphant re-emergence in the wake of founding member Richey James Edwards' disappearance. Some of these songs contain his final lyrics before he vanished. Among the best songs are A Design For Life, Kevin Carter, Enola/Alone, Further Along, and Removeables. I also really like The Girl Who Wanted to Be God. A solid album and along with the harrowing The Holy Bible, their absolute peak.
full of manics.......2004-09-08
I wont write about the story that surround the making of this album (lots of people took care of that already), I just wanted to tell you that trhis is probably the best album the manics ever recorded (along with the darker and angrier "holy bible"), but this is another story. Here in EMG the band displays some of their better constructed songs, the epic sound of: design for life, the girl who wantde to be god, everything must go (kind of a spector - clash sound), the guitar anthem "australia", the moving and powerful rocker "enola/alone" the great closer "no surface all feelngs", although the second part of the album seems a bit weaker (but you have to consider that the first half is no less than brilliant) this is a very solid affair and a recommended purchase, guaranteed.
