      When you hear the methodical full-body slams (or so they seem) delivered by pianist Chris Brown on Henry Cowell's Dynamic Motion, it amazes that the composer scripted the piece in 1914. Exactly when the world was hitting its modern stride, when speed was vital, Cowell was plunging listeners into the most dense piano music ever composed, even using the term cluster to describe how the piano ought to be played in his works. This collection of 26 Cowell pieces focuses on the easily contained modern era, all of it composed before 1930 and most before 1925. Don't let that mislead you, though; these are some of American music's most maverick moments, times when Cowell made himself perfectly clear in declaring a new language for the keyboard. The pieces, while resolutely American in their declarative, independent character, are also painfully lovely, each suggesting (and many making abundantly clear) the profusion of tonal and atonal possibilities in different clusters. The performers are an adventurous lot, with Brown and Joseph Kubera the best known. But Sorrel Hays and Sarah Cahill do equally tremendous things with these works, exploding them for their full interpretive potential (as Cowell would want). This is one of the great piano-music releases of the 1990s, intrepid and sonically outstanding. --Andrew Bartlett

      Album Description

      Offwhyte's new album The Fifth Sun is some serious hip hop. Backed by the momentum of Galapagos4's incredible stream of releases since the 2000 release of his debut CD Squints, Offwhyte returns with a fourteen track album that will break the necks of hip hop heads and challenge the feeble-minded.

      The album's first single, "High Fidelity" has gained airplay across the country and has been heralded by critics as showing a new, 'evolved' Offwhyte, and the rest of The Fifth Sun is sure to follow in that tradition.

      Delving deeper into his abilities as a songwriter, Offwhyte instantly shows his skills as a lyricist have gained a greater breadth on the intro track, a post-apocalyptic fable entitled 'the merchant'. The poetics get even deeper in the songs that follow, such as the brave new world-inspired "Beta Alpha" and the confessional "Complex Destiny". Other highlights include the uptempo crowd-pleaser "Ups" and Offwhyte's collaborations with Typical Cats emcees Qwel (on "Masonry") and Qwazaar (on "Get a Hold").

      The Fifth Sun's production is top-notch, with beats handled by Meaty Ogre ,Open i, Alias of Anticon, the late Chicago producer Metrognome, and Offwhyte himself. The album is sprinkled with minimal live instrumentation and scratching by Dallas Jackson and DJ Norman Rockwell of the Pacifics.

      The grammar and punctuation you learned throughout grade school are useless, the only skills youll need to use when listening is your ability to slow things down and ponder the sh*t after youve heard it.
      Suppoprted by sickeningly stellar track production from Meaty Ogre, Open i, Alias and Offwhyte himself, the Fifth Sun is a demonstration of the underground's ability to surpass most commercial releases with seemingly little effort. Behind an honest initiative and dedication matched only by the amount of spins Ive given this CD in my own personal stereo - Offwhyte has spearheaded the progression of Chicago's Galapagos4 label and laid down perhaps one of the best examples of G4 material.

      Peep the poetics, pass the politics and pop this disc in...

        I've heard "aver aver" and "WestCoast Love", these two tracks are an interesting combination of urban sounds with a latin twist. It's been a long time since I have even heard anything close to these guys. I was just listening to one of their newer tracks on their website www.447ltd.com ,these guys know how to mix it up, my advice is go out and buy this single and look for the Fifth Sun to blow up big time.

              I just got this cd today and it kicks ass! I think this might be my new favorite Crown cd. It not as fast as "Crowned in Terror" but it is equally heavy. I'm not saying that this isn't fast, just not as fast through out the cd like "Crowned in Terror".
              I would highly recommend this to not just fans of The Crown, but any one that liked this type of music. Get this cd, you wont be disappointed. Enjoy!
